ST-ART

annual report 2014/15

Introduction This year has been a positive one for ST-ART and it is great to see that the Tuesday night sessions are still continuing to attract good numbers and that the cooking sessions are being enjoyed alongside the craft. The annual highlight for ST-ART was the Lantern making, which as usual was well attended by children and their families, who then all came back and got involved in the Horror themed parade. It is good to note that the children’s theatre is picking up with sell out shows for Hugless Douglas during the Easter holiday. We must give thanks to the children who attend the sessions, volunteers, artists and our dedicated co-ordinator Janine Knight. Laura McNair, Chair

Projects November: Lantern Parade This years mild whether conditions went in our favour, there seemed to be even more people than usual out on the streets to watch the lantern parade go by. We went with a Halloween theme and highlights of the parade included a headless horseman on a rearing horse, a man eating plant with the legs sticking up out of the plant and a severed hand, which got a lot of comments from people watching. The children had some brilliant ideas and made lots of witches hats, pumpkins, ghosts and there was even a dementor from Harry Potter! Artists

Special thanks to Graham Catley for taking some great pictures of the parade.

February To coincide with the release of How to Train Your Dragon 2, we had a showing of the film in Ropery Hall and ran 2 puppet making sessions. Young people were able to make a Toothless the Dragon puppet, which proved to be very popular. Artists

Easter Hugless Douglas was booked for the Easter holiday, an adaptation by Blunderbus Theatre of the popular children’s book. With 2 performances at 11am and 2pm, this is the first time we have sold out for a children’s’ show. It was a lovely warm day in April and you had to feel sorry for Douglas the bear who must have been struggling in the heat. Children had mixed reactions to the giant fluffy bear, who got a bit too close for comfort to some of the audience members. Most children thoroughly enjoyed the show and waited in line at the end to give Douglas a hug and have their picture taken. Artists

May There were limited activities during the May holiday and 2 sessions took place at The Ropewalk. Children had the opportunity to make a Rocket Tidy, which could hold all your pens and pencils concealed inside the rocket. The second activity was called ‘Shiver me Timbers’ and included making a clever folded 3D seascape with a pirate ship and even a man overboard! Artists

Summer Activities taking place during the summer period were again limited. Recently we have seen a shift in young people preferring to access activities during term time, after school. The summer activities went ahead with this in mind. The best attended sessions were those for the 5 – 11 yr olds, although we did not see anything like the number we are used to in our after school activities. It is worth noting that none of the children who attend after school accessed any of the holiday activities. We planned two activities for the 8 – 12 yr olds, the felt phone case workshop had to be cancelled due to a lack of interest.

Similarly the decorative mirror workshop for 12 – 18 yr olds was also cancelled. Cooking sessions were also offered during the holidays with mixed attendance. Young bakers had the opportunity to make a cherry mallow tray bake, shortbread biscuits, soda bread and even a chocolate jungle jam jar complete with chocolate trees and jelly snakes! ST-ART was represented at the annual Picnic in the Park event organised by Barton Town Council. Carolyn attended with a paper kite making activity, which was very popular with the young people. 92 children stopped by during the afternoon to make a kite. Artists

October: Lantern making It’s hard to believe this is the 9th year we have made lanterns for Barton Christmas Festival. We went with a Fairy Tales theme this year, Nicky Dillerstone made Rapunzel in her tower, Annie Thwaytes made Little Red Riding Hood, Kirsty Champ made Cinderella’s carriage and Carolyn Short made all of the characters

from Chicken Licken! We seemed to have more children and families than usual coming along to help with the making. One family in particular really threw themselves into it and made a huge castle; we are hoping it will ďŹ t out of the door! Lots of children made mice, which proved quick and easy for some of the younger ones, while the older young people had more elaborate ideas and included a caterpillar on top of a mushroom! Artists

Positive activities for 13 – 24 yrs These activities happen on a Wednesday evening and are funded by North Lincolnshire Council until March 2016. We now have 10 young people who attend regularly and it has become a really nice group. They are all very lively characters and easy to talk to, they are happy to discuss the activities that they want and talk about new ideas. Six of the young people have been working towards their Bronze Arts Award. This has now been completed and all of the young

people passed the moderation in September. They have requested a pizza night as a treat for their hard work; this will take place in November. North Lincolnshire Council gave us additional funding to program a number of sessions in the three remaining youth centres in North Lincolnshire, including Kirton, Broughton and Bottesford. Young people at these centres have taken part in jewellery making, t-shirt printing, felt making, decorative mirrors and making a sock dog. Sessions will continue into 2016. Tuesday night craft club for eight – 12 yrs In the two and a half years the Tuesday night club has been running we have seen 68 different young people accessing the activities. Some have now moved up to the older group on a Wednesday night and we have around 20 that attend the Tuesday club regularly. The cooking club is working really well and helping to relieve the numbers in the art room. Cooking sessions can take up to 6 children at a time and are worked out on a rota depending on how many children sign up in advance. There are currently 19 signed up for cooking on a three week rota, at least three of the children now only come when it is their turn to cook and are no longer accessing the craft activity. The recruiting of 2 new volunteers has made the club much easier to run. The volunteers are enthusiastic, reliable and enjoy attending the club, which makes it a really nice atmosphere for both adults and young people. Artists

Arts Award As well as the six young people from the Wednesday night group who passed their Arts Award, the group of ďŹ ve young people in Westcliff also passed their Bronze Arts Award in February. Their treat for all their hard work also consisted of pizza! Funding was awarded from BBC Children in Need at the end of September for another Arts Award project with two groups of young carers, one in Barton and one in Scunthorpe. This project is yet to get started while the project worker chases up permission from parents. Arts Award Advisor Janine Knight

Trustees Report During the past year ST-ART has continued to offer a wide range of activities for young people and their families but once again due to reduced funding we have not been as prolific in some areas as we would like. Lantern Parade Workshops continue to be popular as do other workshops, some of which are tied into children’s theatre we book for Ropery Hall. The children’s theatre continues to be well supported and is now attracting sell-out audiences. Jane Tuplin - Trustee

The Tuesday evening Craft Club continues to be very popular as does the Cookery Club and the Wednesday evening group for those primarily of secondary school age has shown a heartening growth in numbers. Janine has also now started to attract a core of volunteers who come along to the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions. Summer activity workshops were not as plentiful as previous years, again because of reduced funding, but those that did take place were eagerly received by those attending. On behalf of the Trustees I would like to thank all of the volunteers and apprentices who have offered their valuable time and vital support to the artists and particularly to the co-ordinator Janine Knight.

Directors and Trustees The Trustees were appointed on 2nd June 2015 at the annual general meeting and have served throughout. Chairperson Secretary Treasurer

The Directors and Trustees shall retire from ofďŹ ce together at the end of the next annual general meeting but they may be reelected or re-appointed. The Trustees meet regularly to manage ST-ART and are kept up to date with progress. Trustees often attend events as part of ST-ART’s quality control, and are able to provide feedback at meetings. ST-ART employs a part time coordinator to organise, plan and undertake activities. ST-ART is also grateful to all those unpaid volunteers who provide venues and valuable time so that activities can take place.

Financial Review ST-ART has covered its costs this year but activity has been reduced to match available funds. With no main funder a lot of work is required to keep the smaller amounts of support flowing in to cover core costs and activity expenditure. Many of the funders are happy to support the one off project costs for artists and materials but on going expenditure is becoming ever harder to cover. Without additional support in the next year it is difficult to see how ST-ART will be able to continue to deliver the same level of service. ST-ART would not be viable without the continued support from our hosts The Ropewalk who’s in kind support in offering accommodation and administrative support enable the charity to continue.
