Productive Housing
Diana’s Housing Typology in the XXI Century: A Multifamily Productive Housing. Synopsis
Problem
Throughout history, housing and work have been a part of the daily life of every person. As the twentieth century these two spaces have been disconnected from each other by mismanagement and planning on the ground. The spread of urbanity caused housing and work to be segregated in the city increasing the distance between the two and decreasing productivity and recreation.
The urban growth in Puerto Rico has caused a separation between production space and domestic space. Starting from this segregation of duties, the distance between these two have caused a significant loss of time moving from one to the other, time which could be devoted to production or recreation.

site analysis: programs The site has various programs, mostly single family units. It includes hospitals, businesses, industries, public transportation facilities and government offices.

site analysis: roads network The site is bordered by two main avenues which are very busy, JosĂŠ de Diego Avenue on the west and Jose Custodio Avenue on the south; and two tertiary roads on the north and east leading to the Urban Train.
proposal & site photomontage The place of intervention is in San Francisco, Rio Piedras. The site of the project is located is the parking lot of the Urban Train measuring approximately 3.5 acres. The place takes advantage of its proximity to the two main roads and easy access to transportation systems. The place has the necessary amenities, including shops, housing, endowments and industry.

Conceptually the proposal initially part of three volumes, one vertical (rotated 30 degrees) and two horizontal (one parallel to one of the main roads and the other parallel to the tertiary pathway).
To break the volumetry, some "push and pull" moves have been made. The vertical and horizontal accesses have been arranged in such a way that the access to the tower is located in the center of the volume and for the blocks, accesses are located on the outskirts of the two volumes connected by corridors. These accesses refer to the privacy level of the buildings.
Structurally, both buildings (tower and bars) behave differently. The tower, with a super structure made of concrete, gives the allusion of a folding plane in which it is "filled" with a lightweight aluminum structure, polycarbonate, glass and gypsum board. The bar has structural walls every 25'–0, which are “filled� in the same way as the tower.
proposal components diagram The proposal includes besides the buildings, an underground parking, a raised platform above street level that connects the buildings and serves as a promenade for customers who visit the productive units and green areas, including a large plaza / park which faces the Urban Train.

Ideogram The composition of the building is based on the assembly of a number of modules or parts which overlap one above the other. This assembly system makes it easier to adapt to different customers with different needs. The modular pieces can be formed as a towering building as well as a bar structure.
