What does placement entail?
Student Placement Assistance
Networking & Recruiting Placements
System to Track Placement
But first, let us define placement for MIRA • • • • • •
Multiple Streams of Income (entrepreneurial) 1099, contracts, freelance gigs Cash payments Part-time employment Full-time employment Transfer to a Bachelor’s Program
STUDENT PLACEMENT SYSTEM: Who tracks placement and how? • NOTE: it takes a strong support team to identify placement, but there should be a central point of contact who works with the support team to input placement data. • Currently, Dave Greenberg works with employers for internship • Career Services provides job search assistance to students and alumni • No tracking mechanism is in place (especially for 1099 employment)
SYSTEM TO TRACK PLACEMENT: Proposal • Key faculty and support staff should have access to the Internship database where • • • •
they can input placement data Weekly or bi-weekly blog to distribute and collect job data from students and alumni (a Mass Communications intern would be great at this!) Contact graduates every semester and offer internal job search assistance. Track those who have landed jobs Have an assessment tool incorporated into Internship 2 for faculty to collect job placement data post-internship Applies to ALL majors: exit survey
NETWORKING & RECRUITING • It is very important that the identified networker(s) keep the person tracking the placement and Department Chair up to speed with employer needs. • One person can own the “relationship” but must communicate to students and support staff what the employer desires from student e.g. resume, cover letter, interview • Due to the nature of the industry, person conducting employer outreach should have no conflict of interest and ensure networking is primarily for student/department enhancement
NETWORKING & RECRUITING: Proposal • Allot more funds for students to attend national conferences • Send faculty to conferences with the primary focus to recruit employers for MIRA • Allot more time for staff to attend local networking events • Bring more industry-specific employers onto campus
