Women's center for change The WCCP is a transitional living and resource center. Client is a non-profit founded in Philadelphia with a mission to guide women in need through a transitional program in order to improve quality of life. The project is taking place in North Philadelphia in order to attract users and to diffusely improve the surrounding community. Considering that transitional living homes and resource centers already exist, the proposed project will enhance the quality of the building as well as the quality of the lifestyle the women living in this facility will experience. Analysis of the whole person, not just individual needs, will help assess the design choices made in providing the resources needed for successful recovery or social reinstatement. The design will consist of one large building with multiple facets in contributing to transitional living instead of having multiple different-use buildings on a campus. Designing one building with everything these women may need will help create a better communal atmosphere that can deliver a sense of safety and security. While having one multi use facility, it allows for the diversity of uses and programs for the multitude of different women’s needs. Women can live there, attend classes, receive care, collect resources, or any combination of the sort. Women will be in control of what they need from this center in order to foster the growth of self-efficacy. By providing a safe space for women, women will feel empowered and inspired when they arrive.

illybreria Illy Bookstore Cafe, illyBreria, was a partner project that focused on the funneling of coffee through a filter. This project emphasized on the concept of modernizing the idea of what a bookstore should be and how to market it as an entertaining modern space people would want to visit. We utilized a simple yet effective color palette that marketed the Illy brand. We also worked on how to renovate a historical building structure in Rome without stripping its original architectural features. This projected was picked to be showcased at the end of the semester in a “super jury” and has been showcased in Philadelphia’s “Degree’s of Design” Exhibition. The final design showcases a funnel feature within the center of the building. This is the basis of how the bookstore functions; there is a pod that you use to travel within the space as well as serving as a delivery for your books. The bookstore functions by ordering books through kiosks, or the app, and the employees store the books within casings that roll through the funnel down to the kiosk it was ordered from. In order to preserve the “bookstore feel” so many still enjoy, the library upstairs is accessible to the public to browse while they visit the store.

During this project, my partner and I had individual contributions to the project. My contribution was the design of the coffee bar downstairs and the outdoor seating area. The inspiration for this space was a steaming cup of coffee. I explored ways to portray this within the bar itself in its frontal and planar views. As my sketches portray, the planar view is curved in the shape of a cup, as well as the edges of the bar. There is a decorative acrylic piece that stems off of the bar representing steam. The outdoor seating is derived from the iconic illy brand espresso mugs.

famiglia del mondo market This project was a partnered project submitted to HOK’s annual design competition. In taking inspiration from outdoor markets from different countries around the world, the design pays homage to the various cultures residing in the existing site. Famiglia del Mondo evokes wonder in an inviting atmosphere through the representation of outdoor market design elements including repetitive lighting patterns, industrial mill work strategies, and colorful local art. In abstracting these ideas into a contemporary design, users learn that the Italian Market is a representation of diversity, innovation, and a constant reminder that we are all united as one.

the net museum The interactive light installation, Multiple Shadow House, by Olafur Eliasson, is a cubic structure that lets visitors track their movements in a visuallycompelling array of shadows. The architecture of this space becomes defined by the movements of its users when they intercept light paths. Likewise, our group’s material experiment is an interaction between light and movement; light motion paths create circular and abstract formations, and light-distorting materials interact with the movement or flickering of light to reveal new forms and colors. This combination of moving light with distorting materials is the basis of the proposed museum. By using light rays and distorting materials, the museum emphasizes the wonders and dangers of cyberspace. The visitors unify with their data as they travel throughout the museum, unaware of what is happening in the dark. Once you give the museum your information, the data is inputted into the system. The information can be viewed, manipulated, and tracked however the museum decides to. The data outputs can be completely different from what you put in, just as anything you put online can be viewed, manipulated, and tracked by the unknown.

Approaching the museum, the initial reaction is excitement because of the fun colorful dichroic canopy that leads you into the museum entrance. The panels in the first section have distorting films; they are attractive and interactive with multiple colors. People walk by and they will look different, intriguing guests and persuading them to interact with the space. The following space has light rays that multiply off of the black glossy coating on the upper walls to create an infinity room. There is light fog utilized in the space in order to clearly see rays of light. The movement of the visitors through this space mimics the way data travels through the internet; the more people you have, the more data, the less, the less data, etc. Upstairs, there is an observation area where guests can overlook the previous sections of the museum and witness other museum goers and their interactions. This area lets guests know they were watched the entire time by strangers, representing the surveillance aspects of the internet.

loft in the city Located in Philadelphia, this studio loft project was assigned in order to give students the opportunity to design a tight residential space. Considering it is a studio space, the challenge was to fit in as much as possible without compromising proper design. I was able to include the key elements in residential design within the floorplan, and lofted the bed in order to maximize usable space. Minimalistic design inspired the structural aspects of the space, knowing that in a smaller space, this style of design would help residents feel that their space is open and effective for living.
