People WATCHING Ros to boss just like Cross?  DAN DOONER

Rob Cross stormed to the PDC World Championship on New Year’s Day at the Alexandra Palace. The former electrician shocked 16-time world champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor to win the final 7-2 on the night. Cross had been the 125-1 outsider at the start of the tournament but served notice of his considerable talent during an epic semi-final win over Michael Van Gerwin. It was during the semi-final that Knockcroghery native, Paul Kelly, came to the attention of our eagle-eyed readers. Paul’s ‘Ros4Sam 2018!’ sign had the county talking and following events in the Ally Pally on New Year’s Day, who’d bet against our very own underdogs story this summer?

CONSUMER RIGHTS I bought a coat before Christmas which cost me €150. I really don’t like it now and I returned it to the shop last week and asked for a refund. I kept my receipt which proves that I paid €150 for it. The coat is now on sale for €60 and the store manager would only refund me the reduced amount of €60. Please confirm the store cannot do this as I have my original receipt proving that’s I paid €150 for it. Also, I received a gift which is faulty but I don’t have the receipt. Can I return it to the shop?

Congratulations to Theresa Flynn and Patrick Henderson who were married last Saturday (December 30th) at Ballinlough Church and celebrated their wedding afterwards at the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon. Best wishes to the happy couple from the Grealy Family and staff at the Abbey Hotel.

nials identified as transgender or gender nonconforming, society at large still lacked awareness and understanding of the non-binary community, with a lack of positive role models in

mainstream media. Furthermore, with 3 out of 4 trans people reporting being a victim of a hate crime they recognised a need to take positive steps to support those communities”.

Your consumer rights in sales are the same as at any other time of the year. You are entitled to expect goods to be of merchantable quality, fit for purpose and as described. If they are not, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. If a shop is prepared to offer a refund, rather than a repair or replacement, then your entitlement is to a refund of the full price and not the reduced sale price. However, if you simply change your mind about a purchase a shop is not obliged to take the item back or refund you your money. Some stores may have a policy which offers refunds in respect of “change of mind” items but if so you are only entitled to the reduced sale price and not the original price paid. Such a policy is entirely a gesture of goodwill and not a legal requirement on the shop. With regard to the faulty gift, you will need proof of purchase in order to return it to the shop. The person who bought the item is the one who holds the consumer rights, but if they pass the receipt on to you, then the consumer rights also pass to you, entitling you to a repair, replacement or refund. Roscommon Town was announced by Minister Denis Naughten as the third tidiest town in Ireland in the 2017 Anti-Litter League by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) yesterday at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. The county town, which was classified as ‘Cleaner than European Norms’ finished just behind eventual winner Ennis in Co, Clare and the runner-up, Kildare town. Speaking after the announcement, Cllr Kathleen Shanagher said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have maintained our high standard. When we started out over 17 years ago we would have been down near the bottom of the IBAL Anti-Litter

League but this just shows what can be done with some hard work”. While understandably pleased with yet another top three finish in the antilitter league, Cllr Shanagher said it was disappointing that the town’s bid for top spot had been let down by one area. “Unfortunately, according to the IBAL report it was the clothes bank (near Tesco) which let us down. While people are being civil minded and recycling, we would encourage them to take bottles and clothes home if bins are full. Leaving waste on the ground at the bottle and clothes banks is a littering offence so we would encourage them to call the number provided at the banks if bins are full,” she said.

Pictured are Sarah Scott, Environment Section, Roscommon County Council; John Donohoe, Tidy Towns; Minister Denis Naughten and Cllr Kathleen Shanagher at the Shelbourne Hotel following the announcement that Roscommon finished third in the 2017 IBAL Anti-Litter League.

Cllr Shanagher paid tribute to the “huge team effort” which has seen the town feature among the top three tidiest towns in Ireland for the past two years.

“I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who played a part in this wonderful achievement. The outdoor staff and everyone at Roscommon County Council,

the litter wardens, TUAS workers and the people of Roscommon have all made this possible. It’s important that we maintain it now as the IBAL judging is ongoing”.

Group of €13.3m puts Roscommon on dearth…! the right road Fitz wants more money for Group Water Schemes Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice has called for the funding that is required for group water schemes to be increased by at least €100 per household in the interests of equality. “Many people around Ireland voluntarily give their time helping to supply water in different parts of this country. It would cost the Government massive amounts of money were it not for the voluntary work that these people do in all parts of Ireland”. Deputy Fitzmaurice continued: “Now that the Government has decided to give free water on the public system to domestic households the Minister needs to immediately give the funding that is required to make

sure that group water schemes will be able to give the same facility to supply good quality water to all their customers. “I believe that Minister Murphy needs to address this urgently, and I hope he understands the situation and that the Water Federation will fight for

all group water schemes right around this country. Group water schemes need to get €240 per household of Government funding along with 100% grant-aid for any upgrading works that is done on those schemes to make sure that they survive in future”.

 DAN DOONER

Minister Denis Naughten has confirmed that Transport Infrastructure Ireland is to invest €13.3m in national road improvements and maintenance throughout County Roscommon in 2018. “Included in the allocation, is funding to go to construction on the new section of the Boyle road from Roscommon Town,

and the planning stages for the N5 upgrade between Strokestown and Ballaghaderreen,” said Minister Naughten. “Funding of €1.6m has been allocated to resurface the N60 on the approaches to Castlerea and the Town itself. This investment will significantly improve the quality of the roads and streets around the Town of Castlerea and builds on the tremendous work lo-

cally by the Town Team. “€650,000 has been allocated to updated the N60 road to Castlerea at Oran and a further €650,000 has been allocated for the resurfacing of the N63 at Athleague. “Funding of €450,000 has also been provided for resurfacing the Galway Road from Roscommon Town. “Transport Infrastructure Ireland has also al-

located €500,000 for work at Ballymurray and Clashaganny on the main Boyle to Athlone Road via Roscommon Town, as part of plans to have these sections of road upgraded. This funding will commence this process but significant additional funding will be required to bring both sections of road up to a modern standard,” concluded Minister Naughten.

Callaghan welcomes announcement Cllr Liam Callaghan has welcomed the news that Transport Infrastructure Ireland is to invest over €13 million in national road improvements and maintenance throughout County Roscommon in 2018. Reacting to the announcement, Cllr Callaghan said: “This is very good news for Roscommon and in particular I’m delighted with fund-

ing for Frenchpark and Tulsk with over €1 million announced for surface replacement in these villages. “Also, under the Minor Works Scheme, almost €5 million has been allocated for works on the N61 at Clashaganny and Coolteige. Overall this is very good news for County Roscommon”.

Generous and hard-working Doreen fondly remembered  SEAMUS DUKE

There was widespread shock and sadness in the Roscommon town area and throughout the county in the days before Christmas at news of the sudden and untimely death of one of the area’s best known and highly respected figures, Doreen Conlon. Mrs Conlon passed away following a short illness at University Hospital in Galway. Aged in her 60s, Doreen was known as a tireless worker on behalf of many

community groups and charities all her life. Her easy going demeanour and sense of fun endeared her to countless tens of thousands of people over the years as she got on with her work without fuss, never seeking praise or gratitude. Doreen Conlon was super company and a joke or quick witted remark was never far away regardless of the situation. An hour or two spent in her company was a tonic whenever it happened. Her funeral was one of the biggest seen in

the county for many years as people travelled from far and wide to pay tribute to her and her family. It was a measure of the esteem that she was held in by so many people and the numbers that Doreen had helped throughout her life. She was involved with so many different organisations and groups over the years that there is a danger that one or two would be left out if I started to mention names. The number of different guards of honour seen at her removal, requiem mass, and burial were

a testament to the life and times of this remarkable woman. Her loss to the community will be severely felt, but it pales into insignificance when compared to the loss suffered by her loving family. She is survived by husband Jim and children Collette, Peter, Michelle, Padraig, Paul, Claire and Emily, brothers, sisters, grandchildren other family members and a huge circle of friends, colleagues and neighbours. May her kind and generous soul rest in peace.

NewsPeople newsbrief €400,000 for the Seniors Alert Scheme Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has stated that it is very positive that an additional €400,000 is to be made available for the provision of personalised alarms for people over 65. Senator Hopkins said: “My colleague, Minister for Rural and Community Affairs, Michael Ring TD has informed me that he is making these additional funds available, on top of the €2.3 million made available in October due to the surge in new applications for the scheme. “To date 1,715 people across Roscommon and Galway have availed of personal alarms under the scheme. In October, Minister Ring widened the criteria for the scheme, making it available to people over the age of 65 who do not live alone for the first time as well as those in receipt of the living alone allowance who were already eligible for the scheme. “I have received numerous phone calls particularly over the past number of months of people who wish to avail of the scheme. A personal alarm can help to give an older person a much greater sense of security. There is free personal monitoring of the alarm for the first 12 months, after which a person pays a small fee”. Senator Hopkins also went on to compliment the "many community organisations who assist with the delivery of this scheme”. Senator Hopkins concluded: “The long winter nights at present can create anxiety for some older people, particularly those living in rural or isolated areas. Applying for a personal alarm can give people a greater sense of safety in their own home and I would strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to apply for the scheme”.

Government must guarantee flood funding – Murphy Major clean-up as Eleanor batters west to take a more proactive approach in dealing with future storms and floods – the last year alone has shown that these are no longer unique weather events and we need to come up with measures to not only ensure a swift and co-ordinated response in the aftermath of these storms, but also to prepare for these events in advance,” concluded Deputy Murphy.

 DAN DOONER

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on the OPW and Flood Relief Eugene Murphy has called on the Government to ensure that local authorities are provided with additional resources to help with the clean-up effort following Tuesday’s storm. Storm Eleanor has caused extensive damage across the western part of the country, with severe flooding in Galway, Roscommon and Mayo. A status Orange alert remained in place yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) as the clean-up operation in towns and villages in the west and midlands got underway. Deputy Murphy said: “Once again we have seen counties in the west and midlands being battered by storm force winds, high tides and severe flooding. Communities that have barely recovered from Storm Ophelia in November are now trying to get to grips with fresh flooding fallout. “Homes and businesses across Galway have been submerged under flood waters, while roads have

been blocked and power is out as a result of fallen debris in many parts of the west. This is a heartbreaking situation for people who are facing a renewed clean-up operation, less than two months after the last one. “I want to pay tribute to the people on the ground who are already hard at work trying to repair the damage caused – ESB crews, local authority workers, army personnel. Without their efforts, the situation would be infinitely worse.

“I welcome the fact that Defence Minister Paul Kehoe has committed to a humanitarian flooding scheme to help small businesses, community groups and sports organisations which have no flood insurance, but have been affected by this latest storm. “I am also urging Minister Eoghan Murphy to ensure that funding is made available to local authorities to help with the huge clean-up operation that will have to be undertaken. HSE responds to queries from Ward  DAN DOONER

The HSE’s Chief Officer for Galway, Roscommon and Mayo, Tony Canavan, has responded to a number of questions raised by Cllr. Tony Ward recently. In his response to Cllr. Ward’s query as to why the attendance allowance for mental health service users in Co. Roscommon was cut from €30 to €20, Mr. Canavan stated: “The attendance allowance bring referred to was cut in two stages in November 2011 and February 2012. This brought the attendance allowance in line with allowances paid to persons attending FÁS and other services. “However, we are aware that a different rate applies in Galway and Mayo…and therefore have asked for a review of the three counties to be conducted. We expect this to be completed in the first quarter of 2018”. As for future plans concerning the use of a house at Cloonbrackna in Co. Roscommon, which was closed in 2015 for essential repairs, Mr. Canavan confirmed that

Cllr Tony Ward.

a review of day services had commenced and the outcome of this review would inform any decisions to be made at local level. He added that any future change of use when it came to the house at Cloonbrackna would require a planning application from the local authority. “This property was last used as a Residential Hostel. Any change to the use of the property would be a material change in use requiring an application for planning for change of use to Roscommon

County Council”. Mr. Canavan rejected Cllr. Ward’s assertion that three male service users were transferred to a house on the Galway Road “without any consultation with them or any family member”. Mr. Canavan said that while the HSE couldn't comment on individual cases, they could confirm that such transfers involved “intensive rehab work over a protracted period of time”. He added: “There is consultation with the families of the service users and they would meet on a number of occasions”. Cllr. Ward also requested information from the HSE regarding the restoration of National School Dental Services in Ballyforan and Ballinasloe. Mr. Canavan confirmed that the service in Ballyforan had been restored in October but had been relocated to the Primary Care Centre in Roscommon. He added that the executive had to “reorganise” the service in Ballinasloe for “a period of time” due to staff shortages but that it fully intended to restore the service as soon as resources are in place.

Launch of Ronan McCormack Charity Challenge The Ronan McCormack Charity Challenge 2018 was launched recently at Roscommon Leisure Zone. This year’s event will take place on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd of March. As usual, the challenge kicks off with a choice of a 5k or 10k timed moonlight run/walk on Friday, March 2nd. The following morning it will be the turn of the cycle challengers who will take part in either a 65km or 125km route. The cycle, which will be fully marshalled, takes cyclists on a tour of the county and surrounding areas. The eagerly anticipated fun darts competition takes place on the evening of Saturday 3rd in Foxe’s Bar, Roscommon town. The charities which will benefit from this year’s event are Roscommon Special Olympics, Children’s Special Needs Services Galway and Pieta House West. This event is organised each year to remember Ronan McCormack, a wonderful young Roscommon man who passed away at the very young age of just 26. He was kind and fun loving and was always eager to help with

a friendly smile and caring attitude. Ronan would be thrilled to know that in his memory to date €131,915 has so far been raised for charity. The organisers acknowledge that it would be impossible to organise an event like this but for the generosity both in terms of time and finance from the event’s participants, sponsors and volunteers. This is what makes this event a truly community occasion. The challenge has grown in numbers over the years and there is no doubt that this year’s event will be bigger and brighter than ever. Roscommon Sports Partnership plays an integral part in the challenge, organizing the annual 8-week training programme. Noel Feeley and his staff will once again put competitors through their paces. Naughten: Boil Water Notices lifted from County Roscommon Minister Denis Naughten recently confirmed that the final significant boil water notice in County Roscommon has now been lifted. Irish water has informed me that it has now been informed by the HSE that it can lift the boil water notice from the Ballinlough/ Loughglynn Public Water Supply Scheme in County Roscommon affecting 3427 people. “The saga of boil water notices in County Roscommon which

has been going on for years, due to huge under investment in water services, has at long last been resolved. “This is an issue that I have been pursuing, particularly over the last 4 years and I now hope that as a result of the investment that we never have a repeat of the scale of boil water notices that we have experienced in County Roscommon. “Due to the scale of the investment throughout County Ros-

common we now have some of the most modern water treatment facilities in the Country and I hope that we can now use this to attract new employment into our area,” concluded Denis Naughten.

New funding will ‘support carers and people with disabilities’ Senator Frank Feighan has said GP visit cards and extra funding for respite care will help carers and people with disabilities. “New measures to come into effect this year will see all carers in receipt of Carer’s Allowance qualify for a GP Visit Card while an additional â‚Ź10 million in funding will be rolled out to provide respite care for persons with disabilities. “The Government has recognised the need for

further supports for those who are caring for the most vulnerable in our society. I hope these new measures will go some way to helping the devoted carers and people with disabilities. We have all witnessed the strain that many families are under in caring for their loved ones, a role which is taken on without any hesitation. “However, carers themselves also require our support and I am delighted that my Fine Gael

colleague, Minister for Health Simon Harris, has been able to allocate additional funding to improve respite care services and to ensure that all carers can access GP services without charge. “This measure will ensure that everyone who is a carer and in receipt of Carer’s Allowance and who up to now has not qualified on means or age grounds will now be able to attend a GP free of charge.

Feighan: ‘Air Ambulance continues to save lives’ Service carries out almost 550 critical missions in 2017  DAN DOONER

Senator Frank Feighan has said that the air ambulance or the Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) as it is formally known, continues to play a vital role in the region’s emergency response infrastructure as it carried out almost 550 missions in 2017. “Since the EAS was established at Custume Barracks, Athlone in 2012, it has now carried out approximately 2,000 emergency missions

in total. The service operates 7 days a week, responding quickly to emergencies where patients needing rapid access to acute services in larger hospitals will be transported quickly to receive the appropriate medical care,” he said. “I strongly campaigned for the introduction of the air ambulance, which continues to save many lives in this region, both adults and children. Many of the taskings often respond to STEMIs, a type of serious heart attack where a coronary

artery is completely blocked. “The gold standard treatment for STEMIs is access to a 24 hour specialist centre such as Galway within 90 minutes of diagnosis, so that treatment to unblock the artery can begin. Usually, the air ambulance flight times to these specialist centres takes little more than twenty minutes to complete. “The EAS is clearly playing a key role in providing critical air support options in response to major emergencies in the region and I will continue to highlight the possibilities of expanding the service to night-time hours,” he concluded.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH: Two recent meetings…

‘It’s time to restore confidence in mental health service’  DAN DOONER

A public meeting on the Roscommon Mental Health Services Review which was facilitated by members of Roscommon County Council was held in the Abbey Hotel on Thursday, November 23rd. Dr. Madeleine Ní Dhalaigh chaired the meeting and while she welcomed those in attendance, she expressed the view that if the meeting was about ‘physical health problems’ rather than mental health, it is likely it would have been better attended. She explained that the reason behind the meeting was to gather opinions and viewpoints and “to

use these to advocate for those who “couldn’t be present to advocate for themselves”. She said: “Those experiencing mental health problems are some of the most vulnerable people in society and as such we must have a fully resourced modern mental health service”. Cllr. Orla Leyden (Cathaoirleach) described the mental health review as “damning” and said: “There is a need to restore confidence in the Mental Health Service” following the publishing of the report. Cllr. Leyden added that those who had been in contact with her felt strongly that funds of €4.47 million in 2012, €6.91 million in 2013 and

€6.19 million in 2014, which according to the report had been returned or retracted to the HSE for the Galway Roscommon area, must be returned to the service. She also said that those who had come to her felt that given the gravity of the concerns highlighted by the report, there needed to be a “full independent inquiry” commissioned by Minister for Health Simon Harris and the National Head of Mental Health, Anne O’Connor. Cllr. Leyden also confirmed that Tony Canavan of the HSE had been invited to attend but that he had declined. Matters raised at the meeting were to be passed on to Mr. Canavan.

Concerns voiced at open forum The lack of mental health services in Castlerea Prison, the over-exposure of children to social media and smartphones, and the suggestion that there is no “plan” for Roscommon Mental Health Services – these were just some of the main points which were raised at an open forum on mental health which was held recently in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon. The event was organised by Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon/Galway

Eugene Murphy and guest speakers included Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Mental Health Deputy James Browne; Kate Mitchell, Senior Policy and Research Officer with Mental Health Reform; and the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) representative Breege Callaghan. Deputy Murphy said that the external review into Roscommon Mental Health services had highlighted the fact that despite trying to implement the changes

required in a Vision for Change the Roscommon mental health services had returned over €17 million to the HSE in funding between 2012 and 2014 at a time when mental health services in County Roscommon were “crying out” for funding. PNA representative Breege Callaghan said that it “beggars belief” that there is no urgency or plan for the future on the part of the HSE. “Where are we going? We

Mary Devine O’Callaghan and Cllr. Paddy Kilduff.

need to change the culture within the services. If the people who broke the service can’t see the problem, how can we fix it? Why are senior management getting away with no accountability?” asked Ms. Callaghan. The PNA rep also pointed out that Roscommon had the second highest rate of suicide in the country and she queried what was wrong with our mental health services. Referring to the relatively

small gathering at the open forum in the Abbey Hotel, Ms. Callaghan said: “Thousands of people around the country get up at 4 am to walk for Pieta House and raise millions of euro – and it’s fantastic – but where are they tonight?” Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Mental Health Deputy James Browne said that we need to ensure that our mental health is treated the same as our physical health and said that Fianna Fáil would

continue to raise it as a pressure point with the Government. Deputy Eugene Murphy said that it was vital that we allow children to experience childhood as so many of them were “drowning in a sea of adult issues” and he noted so many children and young people were “living their lives through social media” and we needed to equip them with coping skills and resilience. The lack of mental health

services in Castlerea Prison was raised from the floor by a lady whose partner had died in prison and she was commended for her bravery in speaking out at the meeting. The lady said that it was vital that mental health services were provided to vulnerable prisoners and she pointed out that prison officers should be trained in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training).

Tracy to share Slimming Secrets in Roscommon Town! A slimmer who trans-

formed her life by losing 2 stone is using her success to expand her career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Tracy joined her local Slimming World group in Boyle 5 years ago and dropped from 12st 9lbs to 10st 7lb and 2 dress sizes! Tracy went on to train as a Consultant for Slimming World in December 2012 at their national training academy in Derbyshire. She currently runs two successful groups in Boyle and Carraroe, Sligo and has now taken over the Roscommon morning group on Wednesdays. She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across Ireland. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I feel very privileged to be able to do this. “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost two stone without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own consult-

ant and group. As someone who has lost weight myself I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight. Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun. “Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many

times before by following numerous diets. I thought I was destined to struggle for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. “The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. Becoming more active is important too. Our Body Magic programme shows people how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. “It’s my role to create that warm, supportive atmosphere to get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others – it really is good fun, come along and find out!”. Tracy King’s Slimming World group is held at Gleeson’s Town House and Restaurant every Wednesday at 9.30 am. Castlerea Community School PLC students receive certificates Recently in Castlerea Community School, Senator Maura Hopkins presented certificates to students who completed FETAC Level 5 in Business Studies, FETAC Level 5 in Community and Health Services and ECDL Studies. Senator Hopkins congratulated all the students who had shown commitment and hard work. She also strongly complimented staff and tutors: Principal Eileen Ryan; Vice Principal Jarlath Burke; PLC Coordinators Damien Carty and Annmarie Quinn; and ECDL Coordinator Yvonne Hanbury, who supported and encouraged students through their studies. Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Senator Hopkins

stated: “Education is such a vital tool. Education is the foundation you need to build a successful life. At the end of the day, the person with the biggest impact on your education is you. Hard work and honest effort do have positive outcomes”. Senator Hopkins continued: “These courses are such a valuable and useful route to a wide number of careers. Many PLC courses are a great opportunity to get a sense of a course before proceeding onto higher education. A big advantage of the PLC is that they can provide a direct route to third level education and many higher education institutions now reserve places for PLC graduates”. Kerrane slams Government over housing Sinn Féin General Election candidate for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane has criticised the government for being “significantly behind schedule in the delivery of social housing construction projects across the State”. Out of a total of 12,293 planned housing units, only 11.9% have been completed, she said. Ms. Kerrane said: “According to Department of Housing fig-

ures contained in the Q3 status report for 2017 the social housing construction projects currently in the pipeline will only meet the housing need of 12% of the 99,555 households on the waiting list. “Not only are the targets too low, the pace of delivery is glacial. Of the 12,293 housing units planned, 9,338 have planning permission of which 5,120 are

on site. This means that just 41% are actually being constructed. Of these, only 1,460 have been completed, a completion rate of 12%. Given that many of these projects secured planning permission back in 2014 and 2015 it is hard to understand why it is taking so long to get them built. “In Roscommon, which has 539 on the housing waiting list, there have only been a mere 6

units delivered in 2017. “The figures clearly demonstrate why the housing crisis is getting worse. Social housing constriction targets are far too low and construction is happening at snail’s pace. It is hard to see how the Government will meet even these modest targets. We need a greater sense of urgency from both central and local government”.

…but Feighan has a solution Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan has said vacant shops could soon be turned into homes to help tackle the housing shortage. Proposals have been brought forward to Government for vacant commercial premises to be made into housing without the need for planning permission. “These draft regula-

tions, if approved by the Oireachtas, will allow the conversion of certain vacant commercial premises such as empty retail units and “over the shop” type spaces to homes without the need for planning permission. “This will have the dual benefit of creating urgently needed housing supply in high demand areas, while at the same time

breathing new life into our towns and urban areas – many of which have been adversely affected by the economic downturn. “Fine Gael in Government is fully committed to bringing as many vacant properties as possible back into use and maximising the use of existing resources. “These new regulations – brought forward by my

Fine Gael colleagues, Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy and Minister of State Damien English – will make it easier for property owners to re-imagine the use of vacant and under-used buildings without having to go through the planning process. “The Joint Oireachtas Committee will discuss these proposals in early

2018 so that the new provisions can be brought into operation as soon as possible”.

Murphy challenges IDA over lack of investment in Roscommon The Roscommon Library competition to name the Roscommon Children’s Book Festival has been won by Gillian Greene from Roscommon. From now the local festival will be called ‘ROS na NOg’. Congratulations to Gillian for coming up with such a good name! Pictured are Meliosa McIntyre, acting assistant librarian, Gillian Greene (competition winner) and Mary Butler, acting County Librarian.

Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon/ Galway Eugene Murphy has challenged the CEO of IDA Ireland over the lack of site visits and grant-aid to counties such as Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim as he claims there is a haemorrhaging of jobs from the region with hundreds of people commuting to Dublin on a daily basis. Deputy Murphy was speaking at the Joint Committee on Business, Enterprise and Innovation recently when he raised a number of points with Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland.

The Fianna Fáil TD queried why there had not been more of an effort to attract Foreign Direct Investment to the regions. “If you stand on a railway platform in Athlone, Longford, Carrick-on-Shannon, Dromod or Roscommon Town from Monday to Friday at 6.30 am, it is packed with neighbours and friends heading to Dublin for work. It is extremely stressful for families with a 4.30 am start and they may not return home until 9 pm in some cases. “Unemployment rates may be

down in my county for example but it’s because people are forced to leave the county for work,” said Deputy Murphy. “The CEO of IDA Ireland, Mr. Shanahan, indicated that they had regional targets of between 30 to 40% investment for each region over a five-year period and while this is admirable I don’t see the evidence of this on the ground. County Roscommon is continually being left at the bottom of the list as it was one of only three counties who received no grantaid from the IDA in 2016”.

Eugene Murphy TD.

A new community playground, ‘Tír na nÓg Cíll Mór’, was recently launched in the parish of Aughrim/Kilmore. This excellent facility was fully financed from funds raised from a successful after-school service which caters for the three national schools in the area - Aughrim, Dangan and Scrabbagh. The fact that this project was brought to fruition without grant aid is evidence of what can be achieved in a small rural parish. The Aughrim/Kilmore Development Association would like to thank everyone who helped to make this project a reality. Special thanks to the Local Community Employment Scheme workers and Supervisor Trevor Hunt for all their hard work on this project over the past year. Congratulations to Darragh Devaney who won the competition to name the new playground (‘Tír na nÓg Cíll Mór). The committee and wider community looks forward to local children and future generations enjoying this fun facility.

PEOPLE PLATFORM Your say, our say….in everyone’s favourite local newspaper!

Trócaire’s thanks to people of Roscommon Dear Editor, I would like to thank your readers and all from Co. Roscommon for their loyal support for Trócaire’s work in 2017. We are extremely privileged to work on behalf of the people of Ireland in some of the poorest countries in the world. That work would not be possible without the generosity of parishioners, students, teachers, clergy, volunteers and supporters who believe passionately in standing in solidarity with those less well off than themselves. 2017 was another challenging year in the fight for global justice. It was a year that saw Trócaire supporting people fleeing conflict in the Middle East, families trying to survive the hunger crises in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan, communities in Honduras and elsewhere who are being denied their basic human rights and women all over the developing world who are living with violence and who find themselves voiceless. The Lenten campaign highlighted the terrible toll that climate change is taking on communities in Honduras who find themselves facing the stark reality of losing their homes due to rising sea levels. Climate change has also exacerbated the food crisis in east Africa where 26 million people face starvation due to a prolonged drought. Trócaire has been supporting hundreds of thousands of people in the region with emergency food aid and longer-term development programmes that will ensure communities are not as vulnerable when these climate shocks occur. Your donations have made this work possible in 2017. On behalf of those we work with and the families and communities on the ground whose lives you have helped change, I would

like to again thank all from Co. Roscommon and wish you a very happy and peaceful New Year. Your sincerely, Eamonn Meehan, Executive Director of Trócaire

Support network launched for younger stroke victims Our friends at the Irish Heart Foundation were in touch recently to inform readers of a new initiative which was launched before Christmas at Croke Park by Minister Denis Naughten. The foundation launched a new online support network for working age stroke survivors (under 65s) in response to a major upsurge in younger stroke victims in Ireland. A national gathering to launch the network was attended by many young stroke survivors from across the country including Carrie Minagh and Martina Greene from Co. Roscommon. The Irish Heart Foundation has established the online network after research revealed that the stroke rate among people of working age in Ireland soared by over a quarter in just seven years. Statistics from the National Stroke Audit published jointly by the Irish Heart Foundation and the HSE’s National Stroke Programme, showed a 26% increase in the proportion of strokes among under 65s to a total of over 2,000 every year. “In spite of the often devastating consequences of what is essentially a brain attack, there is a severe dearth of community services and supports enabling stroke survivors to make the best recovery possible,” said Irish Heart Foundation head of advocacy Chris Macey. “Younger stroke survivors are particularly poorly served – up to now there has been virtually no access for them to peer support despite its huge benefits and we know that many are

suffering in isolation with no help from health and social care services and no hope of getting their lives back on track. “For example, if you suffer a stroke in your 30s, from day one you will receive a homecare package designed to meet the needs of an older person even though you could live with the effects of your attack for more than half a century”. Mr Macey added that the rise in the rate of

younger stroke victims shows it can no longer be seen as only a disease of older people. The new initiative is based around a Facebook members group, Life After Stroke, which will be backed up by a regular series of regional gatherings in 2018. Any working age stroke survivor can join the support network by joining the Life After Stroke group on Facebook or calling the National Heart and Stroke helpline 1800-252550 with their details.

016 was a year in which there were an un-

precedented number of high profile deaths in the music industry. In 2017 there were not as many, however, there are some who will be remembered for their contribution for many years to come.

Chuck Berry One of the most iconic names in the Rock and Roll industry passed away during the year. The goose-stepping guitarist from St. Louis was actually convicted of armed robbery as a young man but he turned his attentions to Rock and Roll and had scores of hits in the 50s and 60s. He lived to the age of 90.

New Year, New You? The experts offer their tips for a healthier body and mind in 2018…

The Body Nutritionist Anne Quirke says you are what you eat and offers five top diet tips to keep you at your physical peak this year. Balance blood sugar If you want even steady energy throughout the day always combine carbohydrates with protein and fats. Carbohydrates enter the bloodstream very quickly and when eaten on their own will cause spikes and dips in blood sugar. When blood sugar drops it’s usually accompanied by a combination of symptoms such as cravings, hunger, low energy and tiredness. Include protein with the good fats (avocado, oily fish, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, seeds) to slow the release of glucose into the blood stream for optimal energy.

 DAN DOONER

January is a tough month. New Year’s Resolutions can fall by the wayside pretty quickly when faced with dark mornings and storm Eleanor. Never fear because here at the Roscommon People we’ve sought out some expert tips to keep you in a positive frame of mind and focussed on your health and fitness goals for 2018.

The Mind Director of Services at Vita House, Marian Keigher and Tiffany Walsh, Psychotherapist at Vita House and Boyle FRC have the following tips for better mental health in 2018. Check your mental health A yearly physical check-up with your GP is considered good practice to ensure any underlining issues do not get out of hand. So, why do we not treat our mental health with the same respect? Instead we wait until any issues get out of hand before seeking help. Instead of waiting until things become an issue why not have a yearly check-up with a mental health professional. Most minor issues can be resolved in just one to two sessions, but when things are left unattended small issues can become much larger. Love yourself! The flaws we accept in others become our platform for self-criticism. We have become a society who doesn’t accept compliments or celebrate our own accomplishments. People who practice self-compassion are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and have a higher resilience to stressors as well as empathy to others. So in 2018 learn to accept a compliment graciously, pat yourself on the back for your accomplishments and show the same love and compassion to yourself that you give others. Get connected! With the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Eat the rainbow Enjoy plenty of fruit and vegetables spread out between breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fruit and vegetables are high in vitamins and minerals for energy production and healthy hormones. Antioxidants are important for liver health and brain health to prevent tissue damage from free radicals (a natural bi-product of metabolism). Vitamins A and E support skin health and vitamin C and zinc support immune function. Include 5 portions of vegetables and 2-3 portions of fruit a day to meet daily requirements Essential fatty acids Aptly named, essential omega 3 foods (salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, walnuts, ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil, chia seeds and avocado) must be consumed in the diet as unlike some proteins, the body cannot make them. These essential fatty acids will make your skin, hair and nails glow, they are important to keep inflammation under control and they keep joints lubricated and healthy. Considering our brains are mainly made from fats this nutrient is critical for brain health and helps prevent cognitive decline. Limit sugar intake Sugar has zero nutritional value - nutritionally it does nothing for us! And to add insult to injury research shows that excess sugar intake it is linked to obesity, insulin resistance, Alzheimer’s disease and PCOS to name a few. That said as a health coach I do understand that it is difficult to cut it out completely but you could start with reducing to 50-100 calories of a treat per day. Avoid anything ending in “ose”! Avoid processed foods Let’s face it unless you understand every ingredient on the box, you don’t know what’s in it! Processed foods are often full of sugar, salt and fats to make it taste better. Home cooking is by far the best option. In addition check out your local health food stores for tinned soups, curries and pasta sauces that are free from chemicals and other additives.

Get out there Many people spend an entire week, with very little time outdoors. This means we are spending our days under false lighting and breathing recycled air, this also affects our absorption of Vitamin D which plays a significant role in anxiety and depression. Getting outside has shown to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Marian Keigher, Director of Services at Vita House and Tiffany Walsh, Psychotherapist and Roscommon Suicide Bereavement Liaison Officer, based in Vita House and Boyle FRC.

Give back Do something nice for a friend or even a stranger. Thank someone, smile, volunteer, or join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself and your happiness linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you. WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Today the child born on Christmas is revealed to be the long-awaited king of the Jews. As the priests and scribes interpret the prophecies in today’s Gospel, he is the ruler expected from the line of King David, whose greatness is to reach to the ends of the earth (see Micah 5:1-3; 2 Samuel 5:2). Jesus is found with His mother, as David’s son, Solomon, was enthroned alongside his Queen Mother (see 1 Kings 2:19). And the magi come to pay Him tribute, as once kings and queens came to Solomon (see 1 Kings 10:2,25). His coming evokes promises that extend back to Israel’s beginnings. Centuries before, an evil king seeking to destroy Moses and the Israelites had summoned Balaam, who came from the East with two servants. But Balaam refused to curse Israel, and instead prophesied that a star and royal staff would arise out of Israel and be exalted above all the nations (see Numbers 22:21; 23:7; 24:7,17). This is the star the three magi follow. And like Balaam, they too, refuse to be tangled in an evil king’s scheme. Their pilgrimage is a sign - that the prophesies in today’s First Reading and Psalm are being fulfilled. They come from afar, guided by God’s light, bearing the wealth of nations, to praise Israel’s God. We celebrate today our own entrance into the family of God, and the fulfillment of God’s plan that all nations be united with Israel as co-heirs to His Fatherly blessings, as Paul reveals in today’s Epistle. We too, must be guided by the root of David, the bright morning star (see Revelation 22:16), and the light of the world (see Isaiah 42:6; John 8:12). As the magi adored Him in the manger, let us renew our vow to serve Him, placing our gifts - our intentions and talents - on the altar in this Eucharist. We must offer to Him our very lives in thanksgiving. No lesser gift will suffice for this newborn King. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory. com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

unique take on life ...

Counting the cost of Christmas cards

Another Christmas has come and gone, and as the dust settles on another year, the cost of posting Christmas cards is causing me, and a few of my regular readers, quite a bit of concern, so much so that I have been asked to make an appeal to the Minister involved, Denis Naughten, to take a serious look at dropping Christmas stamp prices for next year. I freely admit that I would be a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas, and since I was a boy I would always look forward to sending and receiving the festive cards. But this year I was told by the staff in a couple of post offices that the number of cards posted was very much down, and, despite the handiness and convenience of a text message, most people that I spoke to were of the opinion that the sales were down because the cost was prohibitive. I appreciate that An Post is a business and needs to try to make money, but one of my readers feels that if the Minister dropped the price of Christmas stamps by a decent amount, you would see a lot more cards being posted. The knock-on effect would be that places in my locality, like the Divine Word Missionaries, who print and distribute cards, and P and G Cards in Athleague who wholesale them, would benefit accordingly. Anyway that’s my thought on the matter, so we’ll see if Denis Naughton agrees with me!

and the music and singing provided by Annette Griffin, her amazing mother Frances, and John Staunton was just awesome. I met so many people who echoed my sentiments and found the whole experience to be so rewarding. In case you think I am a religious fanatic, I most certainly am not. I’m just an ordinary country lad trying my best to figure it all out - and failing a lot of the time – but on this one day of the year, I have to admit I really enjoy the visit to the Castle and benefit quite a bit from the beautiful ceremonies.

Great night as Wards return Changing subjects totally and out here in Creggs, we as a community are extremely proud of the success and achievements of the Ward brothers, Robert and Michael, who together with Padraig Burke, are heading up one of Ireland’s biggest construction and civil engineering companies, Ward and Burke, with huge projects ongoing in Ireland, the UK, America and Canada. The company provides excellent employment opportuni-

Staying with parties, and birthdays, I helped my good friend, Jack the Lower, Jack Hegarty, celebrate a major milestone last week in John Doorly’s. I was also on hand to celebrate with Seanie Lohan, who had the cheek to outfield me for a high ball in the build up to the Galway v Roscommon match last summer, as he turned 50 in Mikeen’s last Saturday night!

Barrie Harris Walk a great success

Donamon’s Mass appeal Staying with the Christmas activities and, once again, I found myself attending mass in Donamon Castle on Christmas morning and, as I’ve told you before, it is one of the most uplifting and inspirational events of the whole year. Now I want to say that I’m told our own midnight Mass, in Kilbegnet Church, was also very well received by the large attendance but on Christmas morning there is something special about the Donamon Mass, and this year was no different. The altar was beautifully decorated, the full house created a lovely warm atmosphere

All partied out!

ties for many workers, from all around the local area. A number of years ago, Robert, his wife, Mary, and their three daughters moved to Canada, and so it was a very pleasant surprise to hear they were coming home for Christmas and celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with a bit of a do in Mikeen’s just before the holiday. I have to say it was one of the great nights, with a large number of Robert’s former

teammates from both Creggs rugby and GAA clubs (clubs who still benefit from the very generous sponsorship of Ward and Burke) in attendance. The area known locally as ‘the Mountain’, which is where the Ward family come from, was very well represented with most, if not all the neighbours, out to meet and greet the family, and it was great to catch up with so many former friends and teammates.

Back to Christmas highlights, and the annual Barrie Harris Walk was one of the best attended ever - a beautiful bright, slightly frosty morning made for absolutely perfect conditions, and even though there was a bit of fog, the top of the Mountain was just lovely, and for me, it was the most enjoyable walk ever. I had the usual refreshments stop in Mary D’s, where all kinds of goodies were on offer. I failed to make it to either my brother, Billy’s, or Mickey Maloney’s, whose doors were also open. I got back to the village, in the slow lane, and made it back up for some of the Stephen’s Day’s festivities later in the evening. As always, the walk is all about raising money for several deserving charities, so hopefully, once again, the money raised will make a huge difference to so many underprivileged people. If you haven’t given anything yet, it’s not too late.

The perfect end to 2018 On New Year’s Eve, my wife Carol celebrates her birthday and this year we all headed to the Abbey Hotel for a bite to eat, and yet again, the quality was just marvellous. We all wondered how they did it, as the restaurant was packed, there was a large crowd dining in the bar, and to top it all, there was a wedding on as well! And yet, the service, food quality, and the whole dining experience were up to the usual high standards. Well done to Adrian and his staff, we really enjoyed it, and it set us up nicely to ring in the New Year in the company of Paul Browne and his disco in Mikeen’s later on. Along with a large, enthusiastic crowd, we rang out the old and rang in the new, and now we look forward to a nice 2018 and I wish you all well for the future. I hope my heart surgeon doesn’t get this paper, as he might get the wrong impression of my Christmas activities! But from today I am going back to my normal humdrum life and it’s all over…for a week or two at least - my dedication to health and fitness is legendary!

Happy retirement James! Finally for this week, over Christmas, my neighbour, James McKeague retired from driving after 43 accident-free years with Bus Éireann - his safe driving record is quite extraordinary! I wish James a long and happy retirement and best wishes for the future to himself, his wife Kathleen and his family! It’s a career and life to be very proud of so well done James, and congratulations. Till next week, Bye for now!

New Year Wedding!

2018 is going to be a bumper year for devoted Irish Catholics and I for one am absolutely thrilled for them; I mean it’s not every day the leader of our Church pays us a visit; (the last time was September 1979), and of course I have no doubt once again the Phoenix Park will be the venue of choice for the Holy Father’s historic Mass. As a young teen member of the Dublin branch of the Civil Defence, along with my dad and other volunteers, I was on first-aid duty, meaning I was included in the one million plus devotees who attended Pope John Paul II’s Mass back in 1979. Afterwards, relieved of duty, I rushed to Galway to sing, along with my parish folk group, at the Pontiff’s youth Mass, and oh how I cheered beside my fellow aboutto-lapse Catholics, who were all desperate to find a reason, any reason, to hold on to our faith. You know I actually cried when the Holy Father passionately told us “Young people of Ireland…I love you.” But alas, that was then; and this is now, and, while I make no apologies whatsoever folks, nor do I mean any disrespect, I confess I have absolutely no plans to set out at daybreak looking like an extra from Close Encounters of the Third Kind with my torch, spare torch, back-up spare torch and batteries in my handbag, and attend any of this Pope’s August 2018 events. Now my reasons are many, for example one would be the absolutely appalling abuses carried out in Catholic Mother and Baby homes, another is the shameful amount of tax payers’ money that will be spent on the much hyped World Meeting of Families’

week-long event which apparently is to be themed The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World; which, according to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, "will cost over €20 million," due to “the complications of just gathering people together, and the security and technology that is needed to do that”. Fair enough, security and technology come at a price, but that €20 million could house our homeless and cut our HSE waiting lists! Look, to be honest, for many years now I’m happy to say I’m

no longer a slave to the power and mass (sorry for the pun) hysteria and terror that once gripped me for not saying my daily prayers! In addition, it doesn’t, nor will it ever sit well with me that we are a nation who hand-picks small children to attend our schools based solely upon their religion…etc., etc., etc., D’ya get my drift? Now I’ve nothing personal against an 81-year-old religious gentleman visiting our shores; just as I’d nothing personal against an equally elderly Queen Elizabeth when she visited in 2011… but

I didn’t jump on her welcome wagon either. However, I do take it personally when Leo Varadkar pledges our government is "very much at (the) disposal" of the Catholic Church and "will assist in any way to facilitate Pope Francis's visit,” so I want to know why our leader can find funds in his deliciously deep pockets to host the Pontiff’s lavish PR junket but can’t find any small change to help the very people of Roscommon who democratically elected his party to power?

And…five, six, seven, eight!

Emma Anderson and David Larkin from Ballinahown, Athlone celebrated the New Year in style last weekend. The couple from Ballinahown in Athlone were married in Moore Church before enjoying their reception and the countdown at the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon town.

Well readers, I sincerely hope you all had an amazing Christmas and are now fully recovered from your New Year celebrations. And, as we’re soooo over 2017, the time has finally arrived to look forward to 2018 and…you’ve guessed it, the much hyped Dancing with the Stars and its host of, er, famous faces as they cha, cha, cha their way into our homes. Yes, it’s true, I’ll be glued to d’telly to watch what’s clearly going to be RTE’s one and only cross-generational ratings winner of 2018. However, I personally think some viewers shouldn’t be allowed to vote this year given the 2017 finalist; the fabulous, and, in my opinion (as a former

dance champ myself), the performer of the series, Denise McCormack’s loss to what was clearly a less skilful trouper, former Kerry footballer and Garda Aidan O’Mahony. Remember folks, this is a talent show, not a popularity contest. And yes, Aidan is a lovely man and I’m sure a great sportsman/guard, but when the viewing public is swayed by a spectacularly tanned six pack, a pair of painted on trousers showcasing some eye watering hip action and a handsome face, all adding up to what was a lacklustre ‘meh’ performance, then it’s clear many of last year’s voters were about as bright as a lava lamp! Let’s hope this year’s winner shows

the proficient professionalism displayed by last year’s runner-up. Denise…you were robbed love! Now, I wonder, can we add that robbery to the long list of 2017 Garda scandals? No? Right so!

Thank you! Happy New Year folks. Let’s hope it’s gonna be a healthy and successful 2018 for every single, much valued and loved Roscommon People reader. I look forward to bringing you more of my musings and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love, appreciation and support you’ve shown to me and mine during 2017.

IFA sets up Emergency Fodder Initiative KT SHEEP SEMINAR EVENT Abbey Hotel, Roscommon Wednesday 10th January 2018 from 7.30 to 9.30pm TOPICS: Pregnant Ewe Nutrition & Animal Feed Demo Health & Safety Presentation Sheep Market outlook for 2018 & onwards SPEAKERS: • Frank Hynes, Teagasc Sheep Specialist, Athenry • Francis Bligh, Teagasc H & S Specialist, Longford • Jonathan Forbes, Kepak Group, Athleague • • •

John Hanley, Roscommon IFA County Chairman said IFA have set up an emergency fodder initiative, where IFA will mobilise its national county and branch network to support those farmers in most difficulty. Counties have been twinned with a view to identifying farmers who

are in a position to contribute feed, to be transported to areas in need. Mr Hanley said: “It is disappointing that the Minister has to date failed to support a meal voucher system which we strongly believe would have been the best and most efficient solution. We are now seek-

ing a commitment from the Minister to fund the cost of transporting the fodder to the areas in need as part of this interim initiative”. Mr Hanley said the initiative is designed to provide fodder for those in dire need in the coming weeks. County Chairmen and branch officers in areas of

the country not affected to the same extent with the fodder crisis will identify farmers who are prepared to provide even small amounts of feed at a reasonable agreed fixed price. The county chairmen in the affected counties met with Minister Creed and attended the recent fodder

action meeting in Sligo, but there has yet to be a tangible outcome to these meetings. Mr Hanley said Roscommon IFA Officers are working closely with Teagasc and the local DVO to identify the farmers currently in critical need of fodder.

ICSA: Farmers must unite to tackle rural crime The president of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association believes farmers looking out for each other is the best way to try to tackle rural crime. Several farmers in this region have suffered from brazen thefts over the past 12 months, with gardaí urging owners of any

machinery to make sure it is marked to make it harder to sell on if stolen. Pat Keating, who was recently appointed as president for his third two-year term, believes gardaí “can only do so much”, especially in rural areas across Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim.

Sheep welfare and Census applications IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman John Lynskey said the Department of Agriculture has confirmed to IFA that the Sheep Welfare Scheme application for the €10 per ewe payment for 2018 will be sent out to farmers early in the New Year with a closing date of February 2nd 2018. He said: “The application form is very straightforward and farmers in the scheme will only be required to confirm that they wish to continue to participate in year 2. The application and declaration can also be completed on line at www.agfood.ie”. John Lynskey said IFA lobbied hard to secure €25m funding for the Sheep Welfare Scheme, which delivered €10 per ewe payment to sheep farmers. He said: “To date this year 20,986 sheep farmers have been paid €16m under the scheme, through an 85% payment advance. The remaining 15% payment will be made in early 2018”.

New entrants Mr Lynskey said the Department of Agriculture has clarified that the scheme will also be open to new entrants in 2018. “A new entrant to this scheme is defined as an applicant who has applied for a new herd number from 1st January 2017 and prior to the 31st of December 2017, or an applicant with an existing herd number who has not held or traded in sheep for a two year period up to 31st October preceding the scheme year”. The Department also clarified that, based

on the EU Rural Development regulation, it is not possible to reopen the scheme in 2018 for those who were in sheep over the last few years but did not apply in Year 1. In addition, the chairman said the Department has confirmed that the reference number for farmers in the scheme will remain as when they entered the scheme. He said the only scope for increasing numbers in the scheme is on foot of a GLAS commonage plan.

Sheep Census Mr Lynskey said that the 2017 sheep census forms have been sent out to sheep farmers in recent days. He said the census will be undertaken on Sunday 31st December 2017 and the closing date for submitting forms is Wednesday 31st January. For farmers who complete the Census forms online the closing date is extended to February 14th 2018. The IFA sheep farmer leader added: “It is essential that all sheep farmers give both the Sheep Welfare Scheme application form and the Sheep Census form the attention they deserve and ensure that they are completed accurately and returned on time within the deadlines set down. Farmers posting the forms should get proof of postage by means of a registered post receipt”. Mr Lynskey said the Teagasc Clean Sheep Policy guide is included with the Sheep Census forms and should be carefully studied by all sheep farmers.

the same date a year previously. The total number of properties available has now fallen yearon-year for 100 months, having been above 62,000 in late 2009. Commenting on the figures, Ronan Lyons, economist at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft.ie Report, said: “The main feature of the property market in 2017 was just how different the second half was from the first. The first half of the year saw prices jump by 9% in six months, as the relaxation of Central Bank rules for first-time buyers was factored into prices. But the second half of the year saw almost no change in prices, as those very

same rules linking mortgages to the real economy placed a break on prices. “The overall picture of the market remains one of strong demand but very tight supply, in particular of new homes. As we enter 2018, increasing supply – especially of apartments in Ireland’s major cities – must become the key success metric for policymakers when it comes to the housing market.” Martin Clancy from Daft.ie said: “Interest and demand in the property market continues to grow. We are now seeing over 1,000 property searches taking place every minute on Daft.ie”.

ICF Ireland salutes Athlone’s Rising Star! The Irish Chapter of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) recently awarded the ICF Ireland Rising Star Coaching Award for 2017 to Athlone based coach David O’Grady. David has quickly shown the potential to become an outstanding coach for personal and professional development David works as a Human Resources professional in KCI Manufacturing, based in the Athlone IDA Business and Technology Park. He specialises in the areas of professional coaching, talent management, high performance, personal brand, and leadership development. Athlone based coach, David O’Grady, who works in Human Resources with KCI (Athlone) was recently honoured with the ICF Ireland Rising Star Coaching Award for 2017.

the outstanding support he has received from KCI Manufacturing in relation to his educational and professional development. He said: “The Rising Star Coaching Award is a clear reflection of the support that KCI provide for employee development across

the Athlone site”. David has quickly garnered a reputation amongst clients as someone who enables them to identify the key steps to success. He believes that people are the experts of their own lives and everyone needs space from time to time to

get clarity on how to make their goals a reality. This is where David’s skillset comes to play in the developmental cycle of peoples’ aspirational visions. In awarding David the Rising Star Award 2017 ICF Ireland has given recognition to David’s ability

to view coaching in a wider context and his clear commitment to his ongoing personal development and coaching. David is clearly one to watch on the different social media platforms as this Rising Star is only going to shine brighter and farther in 2018!

Food and drink CEOs confident over Brexit An overwhelming majority (91%) of chief executives and senior managers working in the food and drinks industry in Ireland believe their companies will be trading successfully in 2030, despite the numerous challenges they face including Brexit, a survey by Love Irish Food has found. The Love Irish Food 2030 survey was conducted to assess the views of Love Irish Food member brand CEOs & senior managers on the future of the sector in which they operate. The year 2030, 13 years from now, was selected based on the

pace of change over the past 13 years, from boom to bust and back again. The results of the survey also revealed that apart from Brexit the availability of talent is expected to be the one of the most challenging issues facing the food and drinks industry in 13 years’ time. Respondents said the availability of talent was of fundamental importance to the future success of their businesses and equal to that of access to finance and accessible international trade regulation. Though Brexit is to the forefront of business leaders focus,

those surveyed strongly endorsed Ireland’s membership of the EU. Of those surveyed, 96% said EU membership was good for Irish food, while 90% maintain Ireland will have remained an EU member state by 2030. Commenting on the results of the survey, Kieran Rumley, Executive Director, Love Irish Food, said: “Thirteen years ago, in 2004, the Celtic Tiger roared in Ireland.Things, however, changed for the worse in 2008. Now, as we approach 2018, the wheel has turned again. Given the pace of change over the past

13 years, this survey sought views on what life will be like for the Irish food and drinks industry in another 13-year’s time, in 2030, from the people that know the sector best. “The chief executives and senior managers surveyed acknowledge the numerous challenges that lie ahead, including Brexit which is at our door step, attracting and retaining talent, technological advancements and the digital revolution. “The survey shows that CEOs are extremely confident about the future of their businesses and that is to be welcomed”.

Holiday Racing Festivals News Despite having 10 winners across the cards, champion trainer Willie Mullins had to give way to Gordon Elliott who, with 4 in Down Royal on Stephen’s Day, turned out 11 winners over the Christmas. But that fact disguises Mullins’ very unfortunate run with his heavy guns who fared poorly. On St. Stephen’s Day he did win the Grade 1 Novice Chase with Footpad but on the 27th his luck started to change and despite winning both Grade 1 Races with Min and Whiskey Sour, Min lost the race in the steward’s room. Worse was to follow on the 28th when Nichols Canyon fell at the 5th in the Christmas Hurdle and was fatally injured and Yorkhill finished a disappointing last in the Christmas Chase behind Alpha Des Obeaux. On the 29th, in the 2 Grade 1 races, Rathvinden was brought down by the favourite Monalee who fell at the 10th and long odds on Faugheen pulled up in the Ryanair Hurdle. As this is written there appears to be no long-term problem with Faugheen and he remains on track for the Festival in March. Mullins was not the only trainer left perplexed by a horse’s run, Jessica Harrington cannot understand her triple Gold Cup winner Sizing John’s run in the Christmas Chase and is in good order similar to Faugheen but still undergoing blood tests. Cross channel at Kempton on Boxing Day Nicky Hend-

Footpad and Paul Townend are clear at the last on Stephen’s Day.

erson completed a Grade 1 double with Buveur D’Air in the Christmas Hurdle and Mite Bite in the King George.

General News Is there no stopping Aidan O’Brien who ended his record-breaking 2017 by winning the British trainers’ championship for a sixth time? He had picked up the prize on Champions Day at Ascot in October when he reached an unassailable lead. He was champion in 2001, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2016, and finished 2017 with £8,335,028 in prize-money, £2m more than John Gosden. The trainers’ championship is decided on prize-money and runs from January 1st to December 31st. First season trainer Ollie Murphy, who spent 4 years as assistant to Gordon Elliott before returning home after Punchestown in May, trained his biggest winner to date when Hunter’s Call won the Grade 3 Racing Welfare Handicap Hurdle, formerly the Ladbroke Hurdle, at Ascot on the Saturday before Christmas. The horse was having his first run for the stable having been with John Neilan in Kilcolgan, Co. Galway. The 26-year-old trainer brought over jockey Jack Kennedy, attached to Elliott’s stable, to ride the horse and he has trained over 30 winners from his dual purpose yard in Wilmcote near Stratford-on-Avon since he started. A man to watch!

Point to Point View There is only one meeting on this weekend on Sunday racing takes place at Aghabullogue in Cork with a scheduled 12.30 pm start. Wishing all our readers a very Happy and Prosperous New Year and hope your punting for 2018 proves lucrative.

BUCCANEERS RFC Buccs head to Cork Buccaneers kick off their Ulster Bank League 2018 schedule with a trip to Temple Hill, Cork, where they take on champions Cork Constitution on Saturday with the action kicking off at 2.30 pm. The Pirates were narrowly pipped 24-19 when the sides met at Dubarry Park in the first half of Division 1A shortly before Christmas. That result, and Cork Con’s Munster Senior Cup defeat in the interim, will give the midlanders encouragement for this testing assignment.

President’s XV beat Exiles! The Buccaneers President’s XV denied Exiles making it three in-a-row successes when they proved convincing 29-12 victors in the traditional St. Stephen’s Day fixture at Dubarry Park, Athlone. Back-boned by a quartet of Byrnes, the President’s men took the game to the holders from the off. Played in cold but otherwise ideal conditions, the winners were the better outfit for the majority of what was a lively and open affair. Among the interested spectators were South African duo Dylan Rogers and Gavin Schoeman who both played with Buccaneers. Rogers is now a Hong Kong international while Schoeman is one of Buccs’ most respected forwards.

The Lows

The Highs

Roscommon v Mayo All-Ireland FC Quarter-Final replay

Runaway Rossies conquer Connacht! Roscommon hadn’t beaten Galway or Mayo in the championship since 2001 and the league campaign did not auger too well for the championship. But Roscommon produced one of the performances of the year to sweep past the Tribesmen ad win by an emphatic nine points. The goals from Cian Connolly and Brian Stack were memorable as were the celebrations!

Having drawn with Mayo the previous week, tens of thousands of Roscommon followers flocked to Croker to see their heroes complete the job. But Mayo had other ideas and swiftly put the Rossies back in their box.

Pádraig Pearses end 30-year wait

Not so lovely hurling! It was not a good year for Roscommon hurlers in league or championship. Ciaran Comerford is the new man at the helm and the goal should be to gain promotion in the league and to copper-fasten Roscommon’s place in the Christy Ring Cup

After a period of almost total dominance from Four Roads in the Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship, the eternal bridesmaids Pearses made it to the altar themselves as they defeated Four Roads in a thrilling final that featured one of the all-time great displays from 19-year-old Daniel Glynn.

Roscommon U-17s rock The Kingdom

The Murtagh brothers, Diarmuid, Ciaráin and Brian pictured with the JJ Nestor Cup following Roscommon’s Connacht SFC Final victory over Galway in Salthill back in July. Pic: Andrew Fox

This was one of the finest displays from a Roscommon underage team that we have seen since 2006. Liam Tully’s men played some fantastic stuff to knock Kerry out. It may not have worked out in the final against Tyrone, but this showed what could be done against the top teams.

Ballymoe FC take the title!

After a league campaign that started very promisingly, the Roscommon Ladies football team ran out of steam towards the end and the championship was a disappointment. There is a new impetus now in the ladies football game in Roscommon since their recent launch and we would be confident of success in 2018.

Cruise misses out on Irish title

It all went down to the final minutes of the final game of the season in the Roscommon & District Football League Premier Division. Ballymoe snatched the title away from neighbours Castlerea Celtic following some late drama. It doesn’t get any closer than that.

Castlerea boxer Darren Cruise was narrowly defeated by Luke Keeler (96-95 on points) in his bid to land the vacant Irish middleweight title at the national stadium back in June.

Medals for local stars Roscommon could boast a number of top performers across a range of sports in 2017 but two breakthrough performances came to our attention: Liam Egan brought home an All-Ireland handball title in October following his 60X30 U-15 singles success in Co. Carlow. Castlecoote fighter Danni Neilan claimed a silver medal at the IMMAF World Championships in Bahrain in November.

Ladies look to the future

Celtic’s penalty heartbreak! Members of the Pádraig Pearses management celebrate ending a 30-year wait for Roscommon senior title success last October. Picture: Andrew Fox

Boyle Celtic enjoyed a wonderful run to the semi-finals of the FAI Junior Cup this year before losing a penalty shoot-out lottery against Kilkenny’s Evergreen FC at The Showgrounds in April.

THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner While I would normally associate this time of year as the start of the Irish sporting season and a time of positivity and high hopes when anything is possible, here’s a (very) tongue in cheek worst case scenario forecast… It’s the end of September

and I’m slumped in my chair in a darkened corner of the office (Ed – A typical Monday so?). It hasn’t been a good nine months and not even an exclusive interview with the Pope in the VIP section of Copperface Jack’s has been enough to lift my mood. It all began back in April.

José Mourinho was shown the door at Old Trafford after he blamed Paul Scholes and a full moon for a heavy defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League. Ryan Giggs was given the job until the end of the season and he could only grimace as City won the title unbeaten. May didn’t get much better. Liverpool and City met in the Champions League Final where City won their first ever title following a second half comeback from three goals down. Liverpool had beaten United 1-0 in the FA Cup Final the week before after Lukaku had put through his own net. The summer was a complete washout! Mayo claimed Connacht bragging rights after a titanic tussle with Roscommon while Dublin were surprisingly dumped out of Leinster by a resurgent Offaly. It was bad enough until Paul Kimmage released a book titled ‘We Need to Talk About Gavin’! The 2018 World Cup

didn’t go to plan either after hosts Russia were kicked out of their own tournament following crowd trouble at the group stages. England, inspired by Jesse Lingard, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling would go on to win the tournament in emphatic fashion. If you thought things picked up in the autumn, you are sadly mistaken. Sam Allardyce lost his first five games as Man United manager, while Liverpool currently sit top of the table following a 5-0 win at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, the Irish rugby team has been left devastated following a mass exodus of players to clubs in the UK and France as the World Cup looms. Well there you have it, it’s been a nightmare sporting year so far and I long for those dark and stormy days in January when nothing had been decided and anything seemed possible! Still though, at least Conor McGregor’s new line of clothing looks nice!

Diarmuid Murtagh is stopped in his tracks by a Mayo posse.

Sam Allardyce – José Mourinho’s successor.

Caulfield brings silverware to Lecarrow  SEAMUS DUKE

Despite the fact that Johnny Caulfield has spent the last 31 years in Cork, he has never forgotten the 20 years he spent in Roscommon town and Lecarrow, and the man who managed Cork City to a historic league and cup double in 2017 was back in Lecarrow last Saturday night to celebrate his success with the locals. Only a stone’s throw from his parents’ home, Johnny brought the two magnificent trophies with him and chatted with the locals, posed for photos and relaxed as another huge season awaits for Ireland’s best-followed soccer club. Just twelve months previously I met Johnny in Knockcroghery. Already

hugely successful, Cork City had finished second to Dundalk three years in a row in the Premier Division and his burning ambition was to finally land the Premier Division title for the club’s long suffering supporters. Not only did City win the title after a barnstorming start, but they also defeated their bitter rivals Dundalk in the FAI Cup Final in what was a truly memorable year. So what were his expectations for the club going into the 2017 season? “I knew we had a great chance of winning the league because after winning the cup in 2016 we went into the year with a lot of confidence. I also felt that Seanie (Maguire) would have a big season

and he did, and our aim from the start of the year was to win the league. Obviously we stalled a bit after a great start and Maguire, O’Connor and Dunleavy going to England was a huge blow. But we had such a lead we got there in the end. “The bonus was winning the cup and we had that bit of luck that you need. To get to the final and beat Dundalk without Seanie Maguire was special and I don’t think we really got the credit for that,” he said. While 2017 was really special, 2018 will be an even bigger test for the club who regularly attract 5,000 people for their home games at Turner’s Cross. “We have retained most of the lads we had at the

end of the season and we have brought in a few new players. We signed a new striker just today actually from St. Johnstone - Graham Cummins. He’s a Cork man coming back to his home club so I am looking forward to working with him”. Johnny says that the attraction of playing Champions League football will be a big incentive this season. “I’m very happy that our team is hungry again for 2018. Obviously Dundalk will be there again and Shamrock Rovers too and maybe Sligo and Derry, but we are there at the top to be knocked down. “We are really looking forward to playing Champions League football during the summer. It’s great

for the players and it’s great for the fans but our goal is to retain the league title again in 2018,” he said. Johnny says that he loves coming back to Roscommon as often as he can. “Even though I’m in Cork for 31 years Roscommon is my home. I spent my first 20 years here between the town and Lecarrow and I have a lot of friends still here that I look forward to seeing. I love coming back to see my parents and to meet all the people of the locality. “From the age of eight I was going to every game under the sun, Gaelic football, hurling, soccer, and anything else that was going. There are a lot of links with the local people here. At the cup final against

Dundalk there were about 20 people from around here that went to the match, which was great. “My parents are in good health thank God and it is great to come up at this time of the year and meet the local lads and go for a

few pints and a chat”. And that’s what he did. Johnny Caulfield is a lovely man, who deserves his success. A legend in Cork sport who learned the ropes in Roscommon - and has never forgotten that either.

@SeamusDuke

Seamus Duke ON SPORT

Now a word from the Secretary ... To finish off Christmas this week The Roscommon GAA Secretary and well known Leeds United supporter and Kilmore man Brian Carroll did actually complete our ‘Christmas Sporting Questions’ but his e-mail got stuck in cyber-space, however we eventually got the answers and they kickoff the New Year! Best Sporting Moment of 2017? Would have to be approximately 3.30 pm on Sunday the 9th of July in Pearse Stadium, Salthill when David Gough

blew the final whistle in the Connacht final. That was a moment I will never forget for as long as live. To see so many Roscommon people jumping for joy and some shedding a few tears is a memory I will never forget. Most disappointing sporting moment of 2017? To see Kilmore relegated from senior league and championship in 2017. It was a difficult year for our club on the pitch but hopefully we can rebuild and come again. What three sports personalities would

you like to have had at Christmas dinner? Ciaráin Murtagh, Derek Connellan (He’s a mighty man at washing dishes) and Michael Finneran (Western Gaels). One sports book you look forward to reading? The Warrior’s Code by Jackie Tyrrell from Kilkenny should be an interesting read. Who was your choice for Sports Personality of the Year? I’d have gone for a good man from the west, Joe Canning. If you could have one sporting wish for 2018 what would it be? That JJ Nestor stays in

the county until the summer of 2019 and a triple-header of promotion for Roscommon, Kilmore and Leeds United! A very happy and sporting 2018 to all our readers. Remember that you can contact us here at sport@roscommonpeople.ie

Silver lining! Pictured at the grounds of the RDFL for a visit of John Caulfield, Cork City FC manager were John Caulfield and Noel Coyle. Can Cork City retain their league title this year? Picture: Andrew Fox

Duke’s New Year predictions Another year is upon us and I have dusted down the crystal ball for 2018 and I just hope that no one keeps a record of these predictions as most of them will probably be as far out as any lighthouse! But it is still great fun to do.

Gaelic Football Roscommon to be promoted to Division One, to lose the Connacht final (narrowly) to Mayo and to make the Super 8. Dublin will complete a four-in-a-row on the national scene. There will be plenty of huffing and puffing from Mayo, Kerry and Tyrone (as usual) but to no avail. Wouldn’t it be great fun if Roscommon were to make the Super 8 and draw Dublin at Dr Hyde Park! Now that would be a fixture to salivate over.

On the club scene, St. Brigid’s will be going for three-in-a-row in 2018. Who will stop them? They are still the team to beat. I am also looking forward to seeing our U17s in action in 2018.

Hurling Tipperary will be back in 2018 and Wexford will be value outsiders but Galway can retain their title. It will be interesting to see if the gloss is taken off the Munster and Leinster championships now that they are being played on a round-robin basis. Roscommon will hope to step their performances up considerably in 2018 in league and championship but with some players opting out and others not available it will be a huge task for the new team manager Ciaran Comerford.

On the club scene, now that Pádraig Pearses have the championship monkey off their backs, they can make it two-in-a-row this year.

Ladies Football If Kilbride can maintain their rate of improvement they can win in Roscommon again and give the Connacht club championship a real go. The Roscommon county team have every chance of success in league and championship this year. On the national scene Dublin might be good enough to repeat their 2017 success but watch out for Donegal in 2018.

In General… Athleague will be hoping for more success in the Camogie championship this year and in Colleges GAA Roscommon CBS will have a say at the

business end of the Connacht ‘A’ championship this year although their heavy defeat to Rice College in the league final in December shows they have a lot of work to do. Speaking to many GAA people over the holiday period it is very likely that there will be fixture chaos on both the county and club scene in 2018. Already many counties have refused to sanction club championship games for April, which is supposed to be the time set aside for clubs. Not a great start to this ‘new era’. The GAA are great at paying lip service to the club scene but really it is the inter-county scene that sets the agenda. The club championships will still be shoehorned into a couple of months in August and September.

Playing the All-Ireland finals in August is madness too and will prove counterproductive in the long run.

Soccer The Premier League is already over but the big question is can Manchester City make an impact in the Champions League? With a fully fit team the answer is yes, but I predict that PSG will win the Champions League beating City in the final. It is also a World Cup year. I would love to see Belgium and Argentina meet in the final. Can Lionel Messi end his career with a World Cup winner’s medal? Roscommon people will once again have a special interest in the fortunes of Cork City. They play in the Champions League during the summer. Can they retain their league title without Seanie Maguire? Johnny Caulfield’s managerial skills will be tested to the limit. Here in Roscommon Castlerea Celtic are still the team to beat despite the arrival on the scene of Boyle Celtic and St. Peter’s.

Rugby

Champions! The Dubs remain the team to beat in the All-Ireland SFC.

With the World Cup just about 18 months away Joe Schmidt is building a panel to be able to reach the semifinals at least and hopefully we can take another step along the way in the forthcoming Six Nations. England will once again be the biggest threat to a championship win. On the club scene Leinster and Munster are going great guns. Wouldn’t it be great to see them in the Champions Cup final? It’s

Tiger ready to roar: Will we see one of the great sporting comebacks this year as Tiger Woods returns to the course?

possible. Despite a poor Pro14 season, Connacht have every chance in the Challenge Cup and a fully fit team are well capable of winning the secondary European competition.

Golf I am really looking forward to 2018. Can Tiger return to the winner’s enclosure? The signs in December were very good. If Tiger were to come back and be competitive on tour it would be fantastic. If Tiger were to come back and win on tour it would be sensational, but if Tiger were to win a major in 2018 it would be one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time. It is also the year of the Ryder Cup and it would be great to see Shane Lowry and Paul Dunne make the team. Both have the talent but they must be more consistent, especially Lowry. It’s also going to be a make or break year for Rory

McIlroy. If he is on his game he is capable of anything.

Boxing Ireland will have several different boxers fighting for world titles in 2018 including Katie Taylor and Michael Conlon. Katie Taylor continues to impress but maybe her schedule since she turned pro has been a bit too hectic. A world title fight in Dublin this year would be huge. Conlon should deliver on his superb talent. At amateur level he was effortless and has all the attributes to be a world champion for many years to come.

Horse Racing Aidan O’Brien to continue his dominance of the flat racing scene and the Irish to have at last another 10 winners at Cheltenham. Locally, a wish for good weather for the meetings at Lenebane in 2018!

Rossies blow Leitrim away in FBD opener FBD League Round 1 ROSCOMMON

2-14

LEITRIM

1-3

 SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon senior footballers opened their FBD League campaign with a hugely convincing win over a poor Leitrim side yesterday evening (Wednesday) in front of a sizeable Roscommon support at the Leitrim Centre of Excellence, Annaduff. Playing against a strong wind, the Connacht champions tore into their neighbours from the throw-in and were three points ahead after just eight minutes as Diarmuid Murtagh converted two frees before slotting over from play. Leitrim finally opened their account after nine minutes when Darren Carberry got them off the mark. But it was Roscommon who were the dominant force and a Finbar Cregg goal just past the midway point of the first half was no more than they deserved. Conor Devaney played a good ball in and Ciaráin Murtagh fed Cregg who

finished to the net. Brendan Gallagher grabbed Leitrim’s second point after 23 minutes but Roscommon responded with three frees from talisman Diarmuid Murtagh to leave the scores 1-6 to 0-2. On the stroke of half-time, Murtagh struck again. A quick free from Donie Smith found Finbar Cregg and his pass allowed the St. Faithleach’s forward to fist home for Roscommon’s second goal. Half-time score: Roscommon 2-6 Leitrim 0-2. Roscommon continued their assault in the second half aided by the strong wind. Donie Smith was outstanding and he kicked four fantastic points from play as Leitrim struggled to live with McStay’s men. By the 26th minute of the second half, Roscommon led by 2-13 to 0-2 through points from Smith (0-3), Finbar Cregg (0-2) and Ciaráin Murtagh (0-1). A Brendan Gallagher penalty with seven minutes of normal time

remaining was of little consolation to a Leitrim side which was well beaten long before the fulltime whistle. Donie Smith and Keith Beirne swapped points before the end as Roscommon opened their FBD League campaign with a very convincing win. Elsewhere, Galway were 1-12 to 0-11 winners over Sligo. Roscommon: C Lavin; P Domican, N McInerney, R Timothy; T McKenna, D Murray, C Devaney; T O’Rourke, I Kilbride, N Daly; R Daly; P Kelly; CMurtagh (0-1), D Murtagh (1-6, 5 frees), F Cregg (1-2). Subs used: D Smith (0-4) for Devaney (20 mins), S Dowd for Kelly, E Smith for Timothy, S Mullooly for Murray, H Walsh for C Murtagh, C Lennon (0-1) for O’Rourke. Leitrim: D McKiernan; L Ryan, D Feehily, M McWeeney; J Rooney, E Ward, S Quinn; D Wryan, C Moreton; C Gaffney, B Gallagher (1-1, 1-0 penalty), J Heslin; A Flynn, N McGovern, D Carberry (0-1). BREAKING BALL Earley funding approved! Local Minister Denis Naughten TD has confirmed the allocation by the Government of €111,500 to support the development of the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence by Roscommon County GAA Board This facility to be developed at Runnabracken, outside Roscommon

Town, will honour Dermot Earley, the outstanding Gaelic footballer of his generation and Lieutenant General of the Irish Defence Forces. It will provide Gaelic games training and development facilities for 9,750 players from 32 clubs and will also be a resource for the wider

Roscommon community, offering walking/running paths and facilities for community events. Minister Naughten said: “When completed this facility will benefit young people throughout County Roscommon for generations to come and is a fitting tribute to the late Dermot Earley”.

Indoor hurling at Dominic’s

Joe Connaughton (second from left) receives a specially commissioned painting from committee members to acknowledge his 25 years of service to the promotion of hurling in St. Dominic’s GAA Club.

St. John’s Community Centre, Lecarrow was a hive of activity for a number of weeks prior to Christmas. A large number of U-6 and U-8 boys attended weekly for their indoor hurling games. The finals of the indoor hurling leagues took place on December 9th with large crowds in attendance. Naos Connaughton, current Roscommon senior hurler, presented the players with their medals. Helen Dowling, secretary of St. Dominic’s Underage Hurling Committee, also presented a specially commissioned painting to Joe Connaughton to acknowledge Joe’s 25 years service to the promotion of hurling in the club.

Cian’s goal tops! There was more good news for Roscommon footballers at the weekend when Cian Connolly’s goal in the first half of the Connacht Final against Galway was chosen by the viewers of TG4 as their Goal of the Year for 2017. Not alone that but Conor Devaney’s goal against Donegal in the league at Dr Hyde Park was voted at number two and Fintan Cregg’s goal against Mayo in the drawn All-Ireland quarter-final in Croke Park was voted in fourth place.
