Tommy Tiernan and “pretty girls from Roscommon” Writing in his column in the Sunday Independent’s Life magazine, well-known comedian Tommy Tiernan described a period in the 80s and 90s when he was on the dole and spent nights in July chatting to Rossies. ‘It was an eight-year apprenticeship of poverty. Days of the week mattered less than months. April: the start of spring, an extra energy in the air – air that had been purified by the winter snap. July: beautiful, long delicious heat, with no man as your master, staying up till dawn, talking to pretty girls from Tipperary and Roscommon. October: this is the start of it now; are you bedded in for the darkness?’ Tommy Tiernan

If your home has been flooded you may be able to get financial help from the Department of Social Protection’s Humanitarian Assistance Scheme. It is a means-tested scheme designed to provide emergency financial assistance to households who have suffered flooding damage to their homes. If you have been affected by flooding and meet a means test you may be eligible. The scheme covers emergency income support payments; damage to your home and its essential contents e.g. carpets, flooring, furniture, household appliances and bedding. Structural damage may also be considered. The Humanitarian Assistance Scheme is means tested. All household income will be considered. The means test applies the following criteria: Single people: If you have a gross household income of €30,000 or less you will get 100% of the amount allowable. For each whole €1,000 of household income above €30,000 you will be required to make a 1% contribution to the amount allowable. E.g. if you are single and have a gross household income of €35,000 you will get 95% of the amount allowable (€5,000 over the income limit of €30,000 = 5% personal contribution towards the loss). Couples: If you are married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting and have a household income of €50,000 or less you will get 100% of the amount allowable. For each whole €1,000 of household income above €50,000 you will be required to make a 1% contribution to the amount allowable. Children: The income limits are increased by €10,000 for each qualified child. One-parent household: The income limits that apply to couples also apply to one-parent households i.e. €50,000 plus €10,000 for each dependent child. Roadworks ahead!
Council ‘anxious’ to carry out repairs
DAN DOONER
Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice has urged Roscommon residents to inform Roscommon County Council of any roads in need of urgent repair following recent poor weather. Pot holes have become a common sight on the county’s roads over the past number of weeks and Cllr Fitzmaurice says the county council are “anxious” to carry out repairs as soon as possible. “The roads have been under serious pressure with the salting due to cold weather and the recent heavy rain. While most roads across Roscommon are fine, there are some that may need attention. “We’re anxious to get those roads repaired so I’d therefore urge residents to inform local councillors of any roads that may have potholes or are in need of attention. The council doesn’t want to see pot holes obviously and we want to get them repaired as soon as possible. “The council is trying to do as many roads as possible with Macadam, which is expensive but more cost effective in the longterm and has a 20-year lifespan,” Cllr Paschal Fizmaurice has called on Roscommon residents to bring damaged roads to the attention of Roscommon County Council. Cllr Fitzmaurice concluded.

Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy says it “beggars belief” that it will be another five years before the Government can connect 537,587 rural homes and businesses to broadband under the National Broadband Plan. Responding to a Parliamentary Question from Fianna Fáil last week, Minister Denis Naughten said that the Under fire! Minister Denis Naughten
Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy
“network rollout will take 3-5 years following contract award”. With the contract award expected be announced this year, that means it could be 2023 before over half a million homes are connected. Deputy Murphy made his displeasure known this week. “It is an absolute disgrace to think that it will be 2023 before some 537,587 rural homes and businesses will be connected to broadband under the National Broadband Plan,” said Deputy Murphy.
Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has taken aim at the Minister for Health Simon Harris, calling the ongoing overcrowding in hospitals a “national disgrace”. Deputy Fitzmaurice released a statement last week as An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar apologised to patients who had experienced long waits on trolleys in emergency departments across the country. “The number of people on trolleys is reaching unprecedented levels and the same story keeps coming out from Minister Harris and our Taoiseach that it will get better,” said Deputy Fitzmaurice. “The vast majority in Government are in power for seven years now and worse the situation is getting. Hospitals have been downgraded and people were told it would be a better health service, but for the hundreds of people lying on trolleys it is unbearable. “We have had a 30% increase in management but frontline staff that have to suffer the brunt of this pressure”. Deputy Fitzmaurice added that more frontline staff were needed in order to tackle the problem and called for a new hospital for the west of Ireland, claiming that University College Hospital Galway was overwhelmed by patients due to the downgrading of other hospitals in the region. The Independent TD also called for more facilities in Ballinasloe before questioning the Government’s decision making. “Ballinasloe needs a new A&E and extra beds. This Government is once again like the previous Government, failing to make the decisions to create a better health system. The Independents in Government seem to have lost their voice when it comes to health and one wonders why”.
Shanagher slams fly-tipping “scourge” DAN DOONER
Cllr Kathleen Shanagher has slammed what she describes as “the scourge of the fly tipper” following yet another incident of illegal dumping on the Athlone road. Cllr Shanagher reported the incident to Roscommon County Council staff on Monday and said that prosecutions have been brought following similar offences in the past. “It’s ‘dashboard diners’ coming out of Roscommon who have the whole side of the road littered with fast food packaging and drinks cans. Then it seems that there’s someone driving into Roscommon town and dumping a household waste on the opposite side,” Shanagher said. Rubbish discovered on Monday included used nappies and other household waste and Cllr Shanagher said that
while reports of littering are dealt with swiftly, council staff are forced to carry out their work in dangerous conditions. “It’s very difficult to collect rubbish there because
it’s such a busy road. That’s the scourge of the fly tipper; they don’t see anything wrong with this behaviour. “The county’s litter warden has visited houses in
the past and it’s getting to the point where proof of legal waste disposal needs to be provided. If you have waste, you must dispose of it in the right way”.
FF nominations process closes tomorrow The battle for a Fianna Fáil nomination in the Roscommon-Galway constituency for the next general election began last Friday morning (6th) with the nominations process closing tomorrow (Friday). Prospective candidates must re-
ceive support from five Fianna Fáil party members or one registered cumann. So far, four people have expressed an interest in securing a nomination – sitting TD Eugene Murphy, Roscommon County
Councillors Orla Leyden and John Keogh and Moylough Councillor Michael Connolly. Former Roscommon footballer Shane Curran, who stood as a candidate for the party in the last general election, has ruled himself out.

Cllr Orla Leyden, Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council has warmly welcomed the outdoor recreation funding to Co. Roscommon from the Department of Rural and Community Development to enhance walkways in the Demesne Castlerea and to develop a Walk for Wheelchairs at Stoneham’s Lake (Linn Ban Lake). “The Walks for Wheelchairs and for people with lesser mobility will be a great additional accessible amenity in the area, she said. “It will be developed on the stunning lakeside of Stoneham’s, close to the accessible fishing stand with benches and viewing areas for wheelchairs over the Lake and Crannog at intervals. This will also provide great opportunities for bird watching. Cllr Leyden said that this accessible recreational and tourism amenity will also benefit Cuisle IWA National Respite Centre. “Local groups that supported the development include Kilbegnet Development Association, Castlecoote Tidy Towns, Cuisle IWA National Holiday Centre, The Suck Valley Development Association and The Castlecoote Donamon Creggs Rural Tourism and Environmental Action Group. Cllr Leyden said that the idea for this project was borne from the threat of an industrial wind farm in the Castlecoote Donamon Creggs area which came to light last February. “The community when seeking positive sustainable tourism alternatives made a number of suggestions including the development of Walks for Wheelchairs beside Stonehams Lake on Coillte lands, she said.
to develop walking facilities in Castlerea Demesne and a walk for wheelchair users along the Suck Valley Way. “These investments will not only improve local facilities to encourage people to become more active but also enhance the tourism amenities for those visiting Castlerea, Cuisle in Donamon and for those using the Suck Valley Way,â€? said Minister Naughten. “An allocation of â‚Ź21,973 has been allocated to create a walk for wheelchair users along the Suck Valley Way which will build on the funding provided by my Department to the local angling hub to develop wheelchair accessible angling facilities on the River Suck. “Funding of â‚Ź46,374 is being provided to develop hard surface walking trails in Castlerea Demesne and will build on the work of the local committee in improving the facilities and usage of the fabulous Castlerea Demesne. I would actively encourage anybody visiting
east Galway, west and north Roscommon, connecting up the Glens of Antrim - called the Beara Breifne Way - which has the potential to become Ireland’s ‘Camino route’. This walking and cycling trail is based on the historic march of O’Sullivan Beara in 1603 and links 60 villages and towns along the spine of the country, added Minister Naughten. “The villages and towns in counties Galway and Roscommon through which the walk/cycle route runs are rich in tradition but have seen limited numbers of tourists. The development of this trail will be a major benefit in attracting tourism to these areas. “We have already seen the Wild Atlantic Way become a great success for the west coast. Local politicians have welcomed Monday’s announcement that â‚Ź68,000 will be made available for outdoor recreation in Co. Roscommon. Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins believes the funding will provide a welcome boost for the county. “The works include hard surface walking trails within the Castlerea Demesne Public Park which will be finished with tarmacadam to ensure safety for users. Furthermore, the planned project involves age friendly signage and seating. The develop-
ment of this walkway will greatly enhance this wonderful facility on the doorstep of the Castlerea Community. “The development of wheelchair accessible walkways on the Suck Valley Way provides a valuable opportunity for the area to become equipped with a facility which will not only benefit all people in our the community but will enhance the tourism and recreational facilities for the area. Fellow Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan said the announcement was great news for local communities. “This is great news for local communities. The scheme is part of the
Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development and provides funding for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure such as trails, cycle-ways and blueways, as well as the maintenance, enhancement and promotion of existing infrastructureâ€?. Cllr Michael Creaton also welcomed the allocation of over â‚Ź46,000 for the development of hard surface walking tracks in Castlerea Demesne. Cllr Creaton said: “This parkland area is a wonderful amenity in the town and that this funding would ensure the safety of the large numbers of people who use itâ€?.

Senator Maura Hopkins has informed the Roscommon People that the Minister for Mental Health, Jim Daly has agreed to hold a meeting to discuss the long-term future of the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea, which has been closed to new admissions since September 2016. “I wish to make it clear that I have been raising concerns in relation to the future of the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea directly with Minister for Simon Harris, Minister for Mental Health, Jim Daly and HSE Chief Health Officer, Tony Canavan. “At my request, Minister Daly has confirmed that he will hold a meeting on 24th January regarding the Rosalie Unit involving HSE Management, all Oireachtas Public Representatives and family representatives. “I believe it is critical that we all work together in the interests of ensuring a positive outcome in relation to the Rosalie Unit and that is my intention which has been the focus of my work over the past number of months,” Senator Hopkins said. Senator Hopkins had raised serious concerns over the future of the unit with Chief Health Officer Tony Canavan and received this reply in November:
“There are currently fourteen residents at the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea. The intention is to provide care for the residents in the unit as long as this is in the interest of the individual residents. The unit is currently managed by the Mental Health Service in County Roscommon. The appropriateness of this arrangement needs to be examined again on the basis of the needs of the residents. The Rosalie Unit has been closed to new admissions since September 27th 2016. It is not proposed to reopen the unit to new admissions currently. “Capacity exists within the Creagh Suite in Ballinasloe to accommodate Psychiatry of Later Life Patients who have complex continuing care needs”. Senator Hopkins added that a previous meeting which took place with former Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Kathleen Lynch, sought to explore further development of the unit. “A number of public representatives including myself along with family representatives met with former Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Kathleen Lynch and senior HSE officials on 1st July 2015. We were informed at that meeting that
the Rosalie Unit would remain open and form part of service delivery into the future. Discussion also took place at that meeting on how the unit would be further developed. This involved potential additional specialism in dementia care. “My core questions are will this unit remain open in the long term? When will new residents be accepted? Are the HSE committed to developing the unit to best support the needs of our community? Will HSE management adhere to the outcomes of the meeting held between public representatives, former Minister Kathleen Lynch and senior HSE Officials?” she concluded.
Feighan welcomes road funding Winter may be playing havoc with Roscommon’s highways and byways but Senator Frank Feighan has welcomed the recent announcement that more than €13.3 in funding will be made available for the county’s national primary and secondary roads in 2018. The allocation was made by Transport Infrastructure Ireland to Roscommon County Council. “These monies will go towards significant improvements and maintenance of national primary and secondary routes. “Part of this funding has been allocated to works on the N61 realignment just outside Roscommon town on the Boyle road and the planning stages of the N5 Ballaghaderreen-Scramogue upgrade”.

Boyle Primary Care Centre welcome addition in North Roscommon – Feighan Senator Frank Feighan has said that next week’s opening of the new Boyle Primary Care Centre to the public is a welcome addition to health services in North Roscommon. “A special open day for the local community took place on Monday last for people to view the state-of-the-art facility. Staff also moved into the new health facility this week with a full service to begin next week.
“Boyle Primary Care Centre will provide health services to a population of approximately 9,000 people in the town and surrounding areas. “As I have said before, the Primary Care Centre is a very positive development for the town and the wider North Roscommon area. It will ensure that the local community has improved access to a greater range of health services on their
own doorstep and under the one roof,” he said. The centre, which is adjacent to the Plunkett Home, will provide modern facilities for a range of primary care services, delivered by a locally based multi-disciplinary Primary Care team. Senator Feighan added: “The Primary Care team will include public health nursing, occupational therapy and physiothera-
py. Other services will include speech and language therapy, psychology, counselling services and diabetes podiatry service. “Ophthalmology clinics, mental health clinics and other visiting services will use bookable rooms in this modern facility while dental services will also transfer from the health centre to upgraded facilities at the new facility.”

NewsPeople ‘David’s a great ambassador for Roscommon!’ Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins hailed Operation Transformation leader David Cryan, saying the Tulsk native was “showing real leadership in his desire to make positive lifestyle changes for him and all of us”. Earlier this week, Senator Hopkins attended the launch of Moore Operation Transformation in Pádraig Pearses GAA Club and remarked that it was “great to see so many of our local communities in this region involved with the Operation Transformation programme on RTE”. Over 120 people attended Pádraig Pearses last Monday evening as Fine Gael Cllr John Dolan from Ballinahown launched Moore Operation Transformation. Cllr Dolan spoke passionately about the importance of keeping fit and healthy in light of his recent health struggle. Cllr Dolan suffered a very serious heart attack last July and emphasised the need for regular medical check-ups and the value of CPR training.
David weighs in on RTE show! CIAN GLENNON
Operation Transformation 2018 aired for the first time on Tuesday evening and some of our readers may have recognised one of the leaders. Tulsk native David Cryan is a Community Sergeant in An Garda Siochána. He is based in Bridewell Garda Station in Dublin City Centre and is 38 years of age. David, who hails from Baslick, has represented Roscommon at minor level in football as well as his home club Tulsk and he previously told the Roscommon People that his weight difficulties began when he finished playing football a number of years ago. David lives with his wife Siobhán and their two children Dylan and Zoe in Lucan. Zoe was born prematurely at 24 weeks, weighing only 540 grams and suffers with a chronic lung disease and Siobhán is her full-time carer. David, who weighed in at 19 stone 5.5 pounds, was given advice by Dr Eddie Murphy on Tuesday’s show. The doctor advised him to find ways of managing stress as he is under a lot of pressure in his life and told him not just to lose weight for his family but to do it for David Cryan pictured with Operation Transformation presenter himself too. *Cian Glennon is on work experience with the Roscom- Kathryn Thomas following his announcement as a leader on the RTE show in January. mon People

20 years on…Deirdre’s still a Super Slimmer!
Have you ever looked at photographs of yourself and all you could think was how big you looked in them? Now with photographic evidence and no way of getting away from it, reality strikes and you’re left with two options…sit there depressed while munching your way through a bag of sweets, vowing to start yet another diet tomorrow or…try something different! That’s exactly what Deirdre did when she joined her local Slimming World group in 1998. Nervous about stepping on the scales and having the truth revealed, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere put Deirdre at ease. Welcomed by a friendly consultant, Deirdre at once felt that this was going to be a different weight loss journey. Like lots of slimmers, Deirdre had tried to lose weight many times before by following numerous diets that were just not sustainable because she had always tired of restricting what she ate. But this was different; she could eat lots of filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish with no calorie counting or complicated menus, and in such a supportive environment too! Slimming World allowed Deirdre the freedom to lose weight while still eating generous portions and having daily treats without feeling guilty. In her first week, Deirdre lost 5lbs and the weight continued

to fall off. She loved the support from her consultant and listening to the experiences of her fellow members. Deirdre knew that this was a lifestyle choice she could commit to long-term. And now, 3 stone and 4Ibs lighter, with an eating plan that’s fun, easy to follow and can be incorporated hassle-free into daily family life, Deirdre has completed her training as a consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club, and runs her slimming groups in Castlerea and Strokestown 52 weeks of the year. “I never dreamed that I would
end up helping other people to lose weight. This job is so very special. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me so that I can give my members the support they need to lose weight. Watching someone change from having no confidence, being embarrassed about their size and wearing shapeless clothes into someone who looks and feels great, brings its own rewards on a daily basis”. P lanning your Wedding Day
Get me to the church on time! MIRIAM KERINS
If you’re a punctually challenged individual, i.e. are never on time for an appointment, it’s likely you’ll be one of those brides who’ll arrive ‘fashionably’ late at their wedding venue. Now, while you may think this is traditional, and indeed a kind of cute way to keep your groom on tenterhooks…worrying ‘will she, won’t she’ turn up; to be honest, many, including your guests will possibly think it’s quite tardy and disrespectful. Perhaps that’s why a vicar in the UK is now reduced to offering brides a little £100 cash bonus incentive (€113) if they turn up on time. Now while it could be construed as being a bit of a disgrace that someone, i.e. a fully functioning and intelligent adult, has to be paid to show some basic manners, and those who need to be incentivised to turn up on time to celebrate what is one of the most important days of their lives should be ashamed of themselves; I think this vicar’s ploy could prove to be a wedding day winner. You see, quite simply, there are many reasons why a bride (or groom) should get themselves to the church/venue on time…here are just a few. When you’re late you’re not just letting your beloved panic and sweat, agonising if you’ve now got cold feet, you’re also delaying the wedding singer, the organist, the celebrant, the altar servers, the wedding planner (if you’re lucky enough to have one), the coach and car drivers, and of course your guests, some of whom
may have already travelled for hours, at considerable expense, to help you celebrate this happy day. In addition, if you’re being married at a venue where multiple weddings take place, say a registry office, you’re shockingly delaying and disrupting other couples who’re waiting in line to tie the knot and that’s just contemptible because you’re ruining their big day. Now of course there may be several reasons why you’re late for your own wedding; I mean you could have suffered a disastrous wardrobe malfunction or your dad could have accidentally dropped his false teeth down the loo and a quick call to an emergency plumber is required. Your wedding car driver could have taken a wrong turn up a one-way street leading you into rush hour traffic; or your flower girl may have developed a sick tummy, etc., etc., etc. All innocent, all forgivable, and possibly all unavoidable. So remember brides and grooms, if you’re getting married this year, we wish you every happiness possible. However, if you’re planning to choose to turn up late for the ceremony, we wish you every bit of luck possible because being a tardy, sloppy time-keeper could mean you’re sending out some pretty prickly signals that you’re going to be an inconsiderate, awkward, rude and disrespectful life partner who places their own needs above respecting the needs of others…and that’s something that could seriously and negatively impact your future relationship with your husband/wife and with those closest to both of you.

Castlerea Credit Union – the place to borrow! Castlerea and District Credit Union Ltd has been serving the people of Castlerea and the surrounding district for 30 years. Manager, Martin Lonergan, explains that “Castlerea Credit Union is a
member-owned financial co-operative and one of its principal aims is to make loan finance available to people at reasonable rates of interest.” “We provide loans for a wide variety of purposes

including car purchase, farming, business loans, home improvement, weddings, holidays, educational, etc.,” said Martin. The many advantages of a car loan from Castlerea and District Credit Union are: you own the car – not the finance/HP company, you go to the garage with ‘cash in hand’, which means real bargaining power. There are no lump sum payments to be made at end of term, free life insurance cover, a swift decision on your loan application, loan term of up to 5 years available and no documentation fees or charges. A car loan from Castlerea Credit Union gives you real bargaining power when you go to the garage. Castlerea Credit Union offers very competitive loan interest rates. Martin went on to say: “Last year Castlerea & District Credit Union refunded members a massive 20% of the loan interest they paid in 2016 and will be doing the same again later this month in respect of 2017. What other financial institution rewards its borrowers in this way!”

Arts Centre ‘Looking Deadly’ for 2018! Roscommon Arts Centre is delighted to launch the 2018 theatre season with the hilarious ‘Looking Deadly’ on Friday, January 19th at 8 pm. Written and performed by Niamh McGrath and Keith Singleton and directed by Amy
Conroy, Looking Deadly tells the story of two small town funeral directors competing for business over the course of a three day Wake. Our heroes are rooted in tradition and caring for those left behind, while their rivals
run a franchise and all who stand in their way, out of business. Experience the many traditions and meet numerous poignant and hilarious characters present over the course of an Irish Wake, while giving a surprising insight into
the sometimes mysterious world of the funeral director. Looking Deadly was written and first performed at the Dublin Fringe Festival 2016 as part of the Show in a Bag initiative run by Fishamble: The New Play Company and
Difference and Repetition at the Arts Centre Roscommon Arts Centre in partnership with Roscommon Arts Office presents ‘Difference & Repetition’, an exhibition by Brothers of Charity, Roscommon with artists Karl Burke and Padraig Cunningham which opens at Roscommon Arts Centre on Friday, January 19th at 6 pm. Difference and Repetition is the second installment in a series of workshops designed and implemented by the artists with Roscommon based Brothers of Charity groups. The workshops covered a range of artistic practices including sound/music,
drawing and painting, collage, clay modeling, performance and video with the guidance of the lead artists. A number of these workshops took place in the theatre space at Roscommon Arts Centre. The theatre stage allowed the participants to move between being a performer to taking a seat as an audience member. A large, slightly raised platform or stage will be positioned in the gallery referring to the contact between performer and audience, viewer and artist. A number of microphones will be positioned directly on the surface so that the stage will come alive with sound.
Supported by Roscommon County Council Arts Office in partnership with Roscommon Arts Centre, this project is aimed at developing partnerships between artists and wider Roscommon communities while also encouraging learning in new media for the participants. For further information contact: linda@ lindashevlin.com (Visual Art Curator, Roscommon Arts Centre/Roscommon Arts Office). This exhibition will continue at Roscommon Arts Centre until March 23rd. All are welcome to visit the exhibition.

Earlier this year, hubby and myself decided to spend New Year’s Eve abroad…well I decided, hubby, bless him, finds life’s easier if he just goes along with my little plans and schemes. And, once I’d worn him down, I found myself chatting with what must be one of the most patient women in County Roscommon, Anita in East West Travel, who expertly booked us on a holiday in South Tenerife’s resort of Los Cristianos. As usual, I’d already done my research and decided that the year round sunshine of South Tenerife would give us the ideal opportunity to relax and unwind, something I personally needed having just hosted a very busy but wonderful Christmas for our entire family where Santa visited our home for the first time since we’d arrived in Roscommon. I also decided that the more grown-up and sophisticated resort of Los Cristianos would suit our personal needs for a quiet, get-away-from-it-all break; and I was correct! For readers who may be forward planning a bit of winter sun, rest and relaxation I cannot recommend Los Cristianos highly enough; especially if you plan to visit in December/January for its glorious weather, its abundance of restaurants, shops, markets, bars, and of course its array of family focused activities, such as the spectacular fireworks display on New Year’s Eve and the flamboyant Los Reyes Magos (the three kings) who paraded across every
town in Tenerife kicking off what was a magical night of entertainment to celebrate Spain’s Christmas Day which occurs on 6th January. Now while there are a multitude of family/couple focused day trips on offer to water parks, theme parks and so-called zoos etc., the problem I have with these attractions is the fact that animals are held in captivity and then forced to perform against their will in the name of entertaining unsuspecting and naïve tourists. You see, as someone who doesn’t agree with using animals for our entertainment purposes I will always steer clear of such ‘attractions,’ however, everyone to their own and all that. We did go quad biking two thirds the way up Mount Teide’s spectacular 3,718-metre summit, which is said to be the highest
point in Spain, attracting approximately three million tourists each year. And, despite the fact there were rumours as recent as last November that Mount Teide’s volcano could be about to erupt at any time given a series of 22 earthquakes had hit the little village of Vilaflor, we still decided to don our helmets, jump on our quads and give it a go. It was expensive but it was fab; and, for all the world, felt like we’d just landed on Mars. Be warned folks, this trip is not for the faint hearted or for anyone who may have mobility issues. We also booked ourselves on other sight-seeing tours and shopping trips; all of which we thoroughly enjoyed and we went out on an educational, controlled, sensitive and totally humane whale watching boat trip with an amazing guide. I was so
moved by these innocent, stunning and spell-binding creatures (who are constantly under threat from abusive humans), I cried like a baby as I realised our need to protect them has never been greater. All in all, we arrived home from our New Year break exhausted but happy (even if we’re now both suffering the effects of the holiday hangover due to excessive eating and drinking). So, if you’re thinking of heading off to the sun next Christmas/New Year, seize the opportunity and start planning it now. A big thanks goes to the extremely well organised and always efficient Anita for her professionalism. For me, peace of mind is priceless when booking a holiday, that’s why I’ll always choose my local travel agent.
Get ready for the ‘against-all-odds’ freak fest extravaganza! Not sure about you folks but I’m looking forward to TV3’s or should I say Virgin Media Television’s, (given last week’s announced re-branding initiative) Ireland’s Got Talent reality show; one of the new additions to the station’s 2018 roster. Now a biggie for me is the fact my aul pal the fab Louis Walsh is part of the judging panel, (love Louis), as well as the drop-dead gorgeous diva that is Michelle Visage…OMG readers, give me a second
while I just…Aaaaggghhh! Ms Visage may describe herself as “a drag queen” but she’s not a man, nor is she transgender, in fact she’s a 100 per cent cis-gender woman. Confused? Don’t be, the phrase simply relates to those whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex…but it sounds very exotic doesn’t it. Anyhow, the show starts on Saturday, February 3rd, and it’s bound to be a freak
fest of ‘against all odds’ sob stories, egged on by the initial bloodthirsty hissing and booing studio audience who’ll suddenly morph into lighter waving drunks on a hen/ stag beano while some eejit humiliates themselves live on stage. Oooh I’ll be glued to me telly. Seriously, the only low point for me will be the boring, robotic and perfect cure for insomnia, Lucy Kennedy, who’s hosting the show.

WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION In the call of Samuel and the first Apostles, today’s Readings shed light on our own calling to be followers of Christ. Notice in the Gospel today that John’s disciples are prepared to hear God’s call. They are already looking for the Messiah, so they trust in John’s word and follow when he points out the Lamb of God walking by. Samuel is also waiting on the Lord - sleeping near the Ark of the Covenant where God’s glory dwells, taking instruction from Eli, the high priest. Samuel listened to God’s word and the Lord was with him. And Samuel, through his word, turned all Israel to the Lord (see 1 Samuel 3:21; 7:2-3). The disciples too, heard and followed - words we hear repeatedly in today’s Gospel. They stayed with the Lord and by their testimony brought others to the Lord. These scenes from salvation history should give us strength to embrace God’s will and to follow His call in our lives. God is constantly calling to each of us - personally, by name (see Isaiah 43:1; John 10:3). He wants us to seek Him in love, to long for His word (see Wisdom 6:11-12). We must desire always, as the apostles did, to stay where the Lord stays, to constantly seek His face (see Psalm 42:2). For we are not our own, but belong to the Lord, as Paul says in today’s Epistle. We must have ears open to obedience, and write His word within our hearts. We must trust in the Lord’s promise that if we come to Him in faith, He will abide with us (see John 15:14; 14:21-23), and raise us by His power. And we must reflect in our lives the love He has shown us, so that others too may find the Messiah. As we renew our vows of discipleship in this Eucharist, let us approach the altar singing the new song of today’s Psalm: “Behold I come . . . to do your will O God”. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory. com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

FRANK BRANDON’S
unique take on life ...
Club v County as GAA problems worsen It’s the first real Monday of 2018, last Monday being New Year’s Day and a Bank Holiday, and, judging by a lot of recent newspaper articles, the organisation that is probably the most important one in the country, the GAA, seems to be facing into what can only be described as a challenging period. The biggest problem is the manner in which inter-county teams have pretty much taken over, to the detriment of the local club scene. There is a definite unease amongst the clubs, who are having to do without their star players for long periods of the year, while those players are, effectively, controlled by their county managers. The end result is a club structure which seems to be unhappy with the overall fixture setup. The problem is now so serious that one article I read in a national newspaper this week suggested that county players, as with rugby players who get picked by the provinces, automatically give up their club allegiance and only resume their club careers when
their inter-county careers are over. It’s a fairly dramatic solution, but at least club managers would know exactly where they stand and applications for postponements, because a club was missing their county men, would be a thing of the past. Now I am well aware that it must be a nightmare to organise the many GAA club fixtures that take place week in, week out, all over the country, but whatever else happens it should always be remembered that the local club is the foundation on which the national organisation is built on. Sticking with the county scene (and indeed some clubs as well), the level of commitment demanded has often been a source of wonder to many people, and a recent interview by Tipperary All-Ireland winner, Kieran Bergin - in which he says he would never have taken up hurling if he knew exactly what ha was letting himself in for - gives a unique insight into the sacrifices of an inter-county player. He says he was literally owned by the county
management, and that his social life was put on hold for all the years he was on the county panel, and, while obviously he could have walked away, he now finds it hard to understand how so many young lads give up everything to try for success as an inter-county player. I have often said that that a couple of pints a week or so before any match won’t do any harm at all, and that total abstinence, which is demanded by a lot of county and even club managers, is totally ridiculous. Bergin also questions why the lad, who gets the number 30 to 34 jersey, which means he’s not really involved on match day but still is expected to train flat out with the county team, can’t be released to play all his club games, which seems reasonable enough to me. This is something that has been causing concern for some time, and I know I won’t come up with the answers but the club versus county problem seems to be coming to a head.
Joe foresees a payper-view future Staying with the GAA, and Joe Brolly is definitely one of those unique types of people that are either loved or hated, with me coming down on the ‘love’ side. As we look at the problems that the organisation is facing he is very concerned with the commercialisation of the GAA brand, and he feels that big companies like AIB and Sky Sports are effectively taking over the GAA. He foresees the day that there will be no free broadcasting of our national games, that it will all be payper-view with Sky in full control. He also says the day will come when the AllIreland finals will take place in ‘Sky Park’, and he fears that the whole package will be priced out
of the ordinary person’s reach. The GAA was founded on the principle of volunteerism and amateurism, and without the unpaid lads who line the pitches, put up and take down the flags and nets, make sure the dressing rooms are clean and the water is turned on for the showers, it would be a very different organisation. But even though
it will never be admitted, nowadays there are loads of GAA members, from coaches to managers and trainers and most certainly top players, who are benefitting financially from their involvement with the game. The question has to be asked as to how long the unpaid volunteers will continue to give of their time and effort. I am not against any-
one getting paid for the considerable demands they put on themselves and their families but I think it’s high time it was all out in the open to let the public know exactly what is going on. I am also aware that some managers only get legitimate expenses, but a bit of transparency would clear up a lot of loose talk. A few years ago it was said a certain county manager was on €100,000 a year with a company car thrown in, which was almost certainly not true, but the problem is that no one can be sure. Anyway, I believe that Joe Brolly and Colm O’Rourke care enough about the game they played so well that they will continue their fight against its commercialisation and ensure the GAA keeps its place as the heartbeat of our local communities.
‘Micko’ made for great TV It’s now Tuesday afternoon and even though it was never meant to happen, it looks as if this column is going to be nearly all about the GAA because, in tandem with hundreds of thousands of viewers last night, I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary ‘Micko’, about legendary Kerry footballer and manager, Mick O’Dwyer, which was shown on RTE and which captured the essence of O’Dwyer the footballing man. As much as was possible, it showed how much the GAA meant to the Kerryman, which, was effectively everything. But for me, the most telling thing about it all was that at the end of an unparallelled career, the last team he managed, at the age of 79, was the local U-14 side, who he was proud to inform us won the Division 5 league. I think that tells us all we need to know, not only about the great Micko, but also about what the GAA, in it’s purest form, means to the ordinary, everyday people of Ireland. Well done RTE, It was an hour of absolutely riveting television and let’s hope we see more of this type of interesting documentary.
Get yourself to Vinegar Bill’s next gig! Finally, for this week, on Saturday night, I headed to a jam-packed PJ’s in Castlecoote, to see and hear for myself what all the excitement was and is about Vinegar Bill, and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed. Vinegar Bill are, I suppose, a type of folk group, and they went down a treat with the huge crowd. If you see them advertised any time soon, make sure you go and see them, but be warned, go early, their big following will be there already! Till next week, Bye for now!

Roscommon University Hospital award for driving workplace health Roscommon University Hospital was celebrated by the Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) for leading the way in heart health at the charity’s annual Healthy Eating and Active@Work Awards supported by the HSE, which benefits 50,000 employees around Ireland each year. A pioneer in the field of workplace health, the Irish Heart Foundation has been boosting the heart health of almost half a million employees in more than 400 companies nationwide for over 20 years through its annual workplace awards, the charity’s flagship health programme which recognises efforts to improve healthy eating practices and physical activity among staff across the country. According to the national charity fighting heart disease and stroke, there are real bottom line benefits to workplace health promotion that provide wins for both the employer and the employee in terms of reduced absenteeism, increased productivity and improved employee morale. Workplaces can apply for Bronze, Silver or Gold levels in both awards. An example of Gold Healthy Eating Award criteria is that fish is offered at least 50% of the week on the hot/cold menu, and an example of Gold Active@ Work Award criteria is that a company develops a workplace policy encouraging physical activity. This year, the catering department at Roscommon University Hospital
Pictured are Prof. Donal O’Shea, Clinical Lead for Obesity, HSE; Patricia Hughes and Patricia Rogers, Roscommon University Hospital who achieved the Silver Healthy Eating Award, and Tim Collins, CEO, Irish Heart Foundation.
was presented with a Silver Healthy Eating Award by the Irish Heart Foundation for its ongoing commitment to providing and promoting healthy meal options. Presenting the awards, Tim Collins, CEO of the Irish Heart Foundation, said: “The Irish Heart Foundation leads the fight to save lives and make life better for those suffering from heart disease and stroke. The good news is that 80% of premature heart disease and stroke is preventable through lifestyle change. “The workplace is an ideal setting for health promotion and the promo-
tion of physical activity as a positive health behaviour. Our workplace programme has been the flagship of our health promotion initiatives for two decades and it’s very heartening to see so many companies across the country receiving our Healthy Eating and Active@Work Awards and contributing greatly to the effort”. Research shows that sitting for prolonged periods is associated with increased risk for heart disease and stroke, even if individuals are regularly physically active, while one third of premature heart disease has been as-
sociated with poor diets alone. According to the Irish Heart Foundation, increased physical activity can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by as much as 20% to 35% and it can prevent and lower blood pressure, reduce stress and help improve mood. Furthermore, an active work force can boost productivity by 4-15%, absenteeism can reduce by up to 20% and workplace injuries can reduce by up to 25%. Professor Donal O’Shea, Clinical Lead for Obesity with the HSE, said: “Initiatives like the Irish Heart Foundation’s workplace
healthy eating and active at work awards are crucial to creating a healthier environment for adults in Ireland and making it easier to be at a healthy weight. We are all too well aware that physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are now the biggest drivers of illness in the developed world and underpin the doubling of obesity rates in Ireland over the last 30 years”. To get support from the Irish Heart Foundation in setting up your own workplace wellness programme for 2018, email Enda Campbell at ecampbell@irishheart.ie or call 01-6685001.

Local Improvement Scheme deadline looms Cllr Ivan Connaughton has called on interested parties to submit applications to Roscommon County Council by January 31st for construction or improvements to non-public roads that: provide access to at least two parcels of land, are owned or occupied by different persons engaged in separate agricultural activities, provide access for the harvesting of turf on a non-commercial basis for two or more persons or are roadways deemed to be used by the public in the opinion of Roscommon County Council. Cllr Connaughton said: “This
scheme is primarily for access to agricultural activities and a grant of between 80-90% is available to successful applications. All property owners who would benefit from such a scheme must sign the application and overall it’s very straight forward. “Following on from my proposal at a recent meeting of Roscommon County Council, I received unanimous support to open up applications for Local Improvement Schemes in 2018 and following years. In 2017, two allocations were received by Roscommon County Council, with a previous LIS list dat-
ing back to 2012 being used. I deemed this unfair and thankfully opening up applications will allow new schemes to apply and have a chance of being successful when more allocations come from Minister Ring’s department. “While the allocations in the last quarter of 2017 are to be welcomed, the timing was not ideal. The timeframe to carry out the works before year end together with the poor weather conditions will result in the life span of the works carried out being substantially reduced. “I have a notice of motion put
forward for our January meeting seeking the department to make allocations for 2018 in the coming months to allow successful schemes carry out the construction or improvement works on their road during the summer months. I will be seeking support for my motion from my fellow councillors. “Anyone seeking further information on the scheme or an application form can contact me on 090-6663700 or email info@ ivanconnaughton.com. Alternatively, you can contact your local councillor who will have the information,” he concluded.
Fodder crisis and exports on ICMSA to-do list Speaking at the start of the New Year, the new President of ICMSA has identified what he described as the “the first two on Irish farming’s 2018 ‘To-Do’ list”, the range of short and long-term questions that Pat McCormack said would “have to be faced and dealt with quickly and correctly”. Mr McCormack, who became the youngest ever President of the organisation when he was elected without contest before Christmas, focussed first on the looming fodder shortage threatening many farms throughout the country. “Additional fodder will be needed in certain areas and we’ll be looking for the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine to
provide support for the transportation and purchase of this fodder. “We also see a link to the question of live exports; the calving season is only weeks away and with over 1.5 million calves being born between now and the end of May, it is essential that the shipping issue is resolved in advance of the calving season and that we have adequate capacity to get to our markets. Any threat to that trade – coming on top of a fodder crisis – really compounds an already bad situation and pushes already stressed farms to the edge. “These would be the two issues that ICMSA would want to see Minister Creed getting to grips with immediately,” said the new President.

KEEP YOUR FARM SAFE
On the long-term issues, Mr McCormack said that the Brexit situation remains a major threat to the Irish Agri-food sector and the conclusion of a satisfactory deal on this matter is by no means assured. He was adamant that given the nature and size of the threat to our beef sector presented by Mercosur that Ireland had no alternative but to block it “without any apology to anyone”. On the CAP Post 2020, he said that ICMSA would insist that Ireland held out for “at least the maintenance of the current budget for CAP” with support for family farms to be the bedrock of CAP going forward. In relation to product prices, he said that volatility remains the key con-
cern with family farms particularly exposed. He committed ICMSA to a continuous lobbying effort aimed at securing taxation measures in Budget 2019 to support farmers during periods of price volatility and the incorporation into CAP of the Voluntary Milk Supply Reduction Scheme proposed by ICMSA in late 2016 and which he credited with stabilising supply and turning the market around after the milk price collapse of 2015. “There is no shortage of issues on which our members have strong and reasonable positions and I will be articulating their concerns: climate change, implementation of the nitrate regulations, payments and inspections are always core concerns in farming

Minister needs to act now on fodder crisis –Fitzmaurice Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice is calling on Minister Creed to act immediately in helping farmers through the fodder crisis. “Since the round table talks with the farming organisations at the beginning of December no progress on delivering an aid package for transport or a meal voucher has been made. Currently it would appear the Minister is hoping the issue will resolve itself or maybe he is still of the opinion that there isn’t a fodder crisis in the west and northwest. “What the Minister needs to do now is implement a transport subsidy for bales whether that is hay, silage or straw. This would help reduce the cost of fodder arriving in western areas which is at an all time high. This subsidy which could be paid through the Co-ops or recognised

suppliers of hay or straw can be up and running by the end of this month as the template is there from the 2013 fodder crisis,” Deputy Fitzmaurice said. The Independent TD added explained that a transport subsidy would enable fodder to be delivered from southern counties to the west of Ireland. “From what we are hearing there are still fodder
supplies in southern areas especially silage. This is why a transport subsidy can help deliver reasonably priced fodder to hard pressed farmers in western areas. However, I would also hope that those with excess fodder would show solidarity and not take advantage of their fellow farmers with unreasonable price hikes,” he concluded.

We hold you close in memory, Even though we are apart, Your spirit will live forever, Within our broken hearts. Creggs RFC Report
THE GAIN LINE
Creggs set for Connacht Junior Cup Senior Rugby Creggs first team training continues on Friday night, as they prepare for the first round of the Connacht Junior Cup against NUIG this Sunday (14th) in Creggs at 2 pm. NUIG defeated Dunmore RFC by 13-7 in the preliminary round last Sunday. Please come along to Creggs and support the lads this Sunday. Connacht Junior 2 League: Creggs 16 OLBC 12. Creggs seconds produced a tremendous display to defeat league leaders OLBC on Sunday. Creggs had dominated the early exchanges and were leading 6-0 after the opening quarter, but OLBC hit back with a fine try by elusive centre Dave Prior, which Conor Flynn converted to edge the Galway City team in front for the first time. Shortly after half-time Ger Heneghan added another penalty to put Creggs ahead, but OLBC responded with some rousing play which tested the Creggs defence to the limit. However, just when it seemed that an OLBC score was inevita-
ble, a great team break-out effort saw Creggs sweep up field for Ger Heneghan to score an excellent try under the posts. He duly converted to bring his personal tally to 16 points. Creggs then defended heroically to hold on for a victory, which was a huge boost to this rapidly improving squad of players. Creggs seconds have a full programme of games in January, with a home Connacht League game against Sligo scheduled for next Sunday. Training continues on Tuesday and Friday nights with returning and new players always welcome. Creggs: Barry Egan, Conor Gore, Ruairi Ó Brolochain, Johnnie Blighe, John Scroope, Ger Heneghan, Stephen Crehan, Tommy Curley, Peter Heavey, Paul McNeill, Declan Nee, Kevin Rushe, Daniel Butt, Michael Feeley, Mattie Corcoran, Brian Coady, Damien Nolan, Seamus Collins, Micheal Glennon, Graham Curran, Matthew Butt.
Youth Rugby
Connacht U-14 A League: Creggs 39 Westport 5. Creggs kept up their quest for a top two place in the league with a win over Westport RFC last Saturday afternoon in Creggs.
Lying joint top of the league now, Creggs will play a very important game against Galwegians RFC in two weeks with both teams currently sitting top of the league. Creggs scored four first half tries through Edimar Fimho, Ben Johnson (2) and Aodhan Looby leaving the half-time score 20-5. In the second half Creggs kept up the pressure and further tries from Edimar Fimho (2), Ryan Conlon and two conversions from Cormac Dolan left the final score 39-5. Training continues Tuesday at 6.50 pm in Lisnamult. New players always welcome. Creggs: Tomas Tiernan, Sean Curley, Michael McAteer, Aidan Hoare, Ben Johnson, Ciaran Purcell, Edimar Fimho, Leigh Kilcoyne, Cormac Dolan, DJ Hession, Jack Fleming, Aodhan Looby, Shane Walsh, Oisin O’Beirne, Ryan Conlon, Senan Lambe, Logan Gore, Daniel Hughes, Andy Quinn, Cormac Feeley, Daniel O’Shaughnessy, Patrick Keane. Connacht Under-18.5 A League: Westport 12 Creggs 22. Creggs continued their recent good form with a hard fought away win over Westport RFC last Sunday.
Creggs started brightly and took the lead after five minutes when Shane Purcell chipped the on rushing defense and gathered the ball himself to score under the posts which he converted to take a 7-0 lead. It was from there on that Westport took control of the possession with their bigger pack and scored two quick tries to take a 12-7 lead. Creggs gained momentum but despite good work up front, they trailed 12-7 going in at half-time. Creggs began the second half well and were beginning to put some phases together. This good play was rewarded on the scoreboard with tries from Tim Lambe, Matthew Curley and Jason Hoare as the visitors ran out 22-12 winners. SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER
@dan_dooner
Hat-trick hero Hanly sends Ireland through I have to say, my love for the beautiful game has waned slightly over the past few months due to ridiculous transfer fees and pampered professionals. I was growing weary of dabbing and diving and listening to José and Antonio’s playground squabbles. All seemed hopelessly lost until a text message out of the blue last Sunday. It was short and to the point but it brought news of futsal heroics from the Netherlands involving 13-year-old Aisling
THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner Hanly from Kilteevan. This column recently highlighted Aisling’s inclusion in the Ireland Deaf Women’s Futsal team for the European Championship Qualifying event in Holland last weekend. Well, the young CP Ajax player played an instrumental role in guiding Ireland to the European Championships, which
will take place in Finland in December as she grabbed a hat-trick against Italy in the final match. Speaking to the Roscommon People earlier this week, Aisling’s mother Liz was understandably thrilled. “We are very proud. Aisling is only 13 years of age and we couldn’t have written a better script for her.
“I got an email on Monday from the FAI which said that Aisling was the youngest player to ever score at that tournament,” said Liz. It’s a remarkable achievement for the young Convent of Mercy student as most of her teammates are aged in their 20s. Aisling is a gifted young sportswoman, however, and represents Roscommon at football at U-14 level. “Our attitude is enjoy while it lasts. We thought she was a bit young for the
trials (for Ireland) but they kept telling us to bring her along. It’s a huge commitment getting up and down to Dublin but it has been a life-changing experience,” said Liz. Aisling wasn’t resting on her laurels this week and was back in action last night at Gaelic football training. Ireland’s young hat-trick hero can look forward to a trip to Finland on December 3rd as Ireland’s Deaf Women’s Futsal team does battle with the best Europe has to offer.

Curraghboy doubles! Newport pair Ian McLoughlin and Ciaran Burke were triumphant in the Curraghboy New Year’s Doubles tournament which was held recently. The youthful duo overcame Lisacul’s Denis Creaton and Sean Jennings in one of the tournament’s best ever finals. The experienced Roscommon pair were beaten in a thrilling final on a score of 31-27, having beaten Ollie Cassidy and Trevor Hannon 31-16 in the semi-finals. The eventual winners, McLoughlin and Burke had overcome Galway pair, Seamus Conneely and Diarmuid Mulkerrins 31-14 at the same juncture. The Plate competition was won by former Roscommon player Neil McDermott and Mullingar man Darren Carter after their opponents, Clare men Fergal Coughlan and Tom Kirby were forced to pull out midway through the final due to injury. McDermott and Carter were leading 18-10 at the time. Meanwhile, Armagh supremo Charly Shanks won the 9th annual John Gaffney Memorial Handball Tournament which took place last weekend in Ballaghaderreen and St. Coman’s Handball Clubs. The current All-Ireland champion narrowly overcame the former three-time Gaffney Memorial champion, legendary Westmeath man, Robbie McCarthy in a thrilling final to claim the crown in front of a full
house and the hundreds watching on Facebook Live. McCarthy dominated the first game, taking it 15-9. However, Shanks came back in the second game, taking it 15-10, and sending the match into a tie-breaker. In an epic tussle that could have gone either way, Shanks came out on top on a final score line of 11-8 to cement his position as Ireland’s number 1 player.

It certainly went some way to satisfying a darts addiction I seem to have acquired over Christmas! Wayne Harries took the title following a close fought final against Mick Egan, the man who had hit the most 180s on the day. Widespread sadness at passing of Paddy Mulvey SEAMUS DUKE

Horses for Courses by Tom Red
There was widespread sadness throughout the county and further afield at news last weekend of the death of one of the best-known and highly respected personalities in Roscommon GAA, Paddy Mulvey. Paddy passed away peacefully at the Abbey Haven Nursing Home in Boyle. Aged in his late 80s, Paddy Mulvey was part and parcel of the GAA in Roscommon for almost seven decades. As a player he won two senior titles for Elphin in 1950 and 1951. But it was with neighbouring club Shannon Gaels that Paddy made his mark and where he became a legend. He won a senior title with ‘The Gaels’ in 1964 but it was his work as an administrator and club and County Board official that he was best known. Paddy spent an incredible 63 years on the Shannon Gaels executive stepping down in 2011. He was Treasurer of the Northern Board before taking over
Racing in Ireland today is at Powerstown Park in Clonmel off at 12.35 pm with tomorrow’s meeting on the flat at the all-weather in Dundalk, stalls opening for the first at 5.30 pm. Saturday’s racing takes place at Punchestown away at 12.25 pm and on Sunday racing is in Fairyhouse Co Meath starting at 1 pm and featuring the Grade “A” Dan Moore Chase. The going will be heavy at Clonmel tomorrow with soft to heavy expected at Punchestown and Fairyhouse and standard going at Dundalk on Friday. Gavin Cromwell returned to Chepstow for the Welsh Grand National last weekend with his 13-year-old Raz De Maree and went one better than last year giving Ireland a second win in the race after Jim Dreaper’s Notre Pere won in 2008. The horse is three years younger than The winning rider 16-Y-O claiming amateur James Bowen, son of Welsh trainer Peter, is only 3 years older the horse but the pair teamed up to great effect winning by 6l and 9l from Alfie’s Spinner and Final Nudge. The horse will now be aimed at the Irish National, the Midlands National or the English National and staying sound he will run in one of those. Cromwell mixes his training duties with being farrier to Gordon Elliott.
Festival Watch Yesterday entries were revealed for the highlight of the four-day festival meeting, the Cheltenham Gold Cup and a total of 38 entries were received with Irish
as Secretary, a post he held for over 40 years. He also served as a Roscommon senior selector for three years and was Irish and Culture Officer on Roscommon County Board for many years as well. He had a special interest in Scór and served as an organiser for many decades at club, regional, and county level. He served at every level with his club and never missed a County Board meeting for over 40 years. In 2011 he was recognised by the GAA at national level with the award of The President’s Medal for services to the association. He was one of the first people in the country to receive such an award. The huge crowds who attended his removal and burial in Drumlion at the weekend was a measure of the esteem in which Paddy Mulvey was held not alone locally but throughout the county and throughout the country. Paddy was pre-deceased by his wife Jo and is survived by sons Fergal and
trainers well represented with 18, almost 50% of the entry. Sizing John, the Champion, is joined by Coney Island, Road To Respect among others but they have the home challenge of Mite Bite, Native River and Bristol De Mai etc. to repel. Three of the last four Gold Cups have gone to the Irish. Ruby Walsh, injured in a fall from Let’s Dance at Punchestown, continues to make progress and hopes to be back in action in mid February in plenty of time for the Cheltenham Festival. Monday brought bad news about 2 of the fancied chasers for Cheltenham with firstly Gordon Elliott announcing that his novice, Death Duty, was out for the rest of the season followed by the Tizzard’s cross channel stating that Gold Cup hopeful Thistlecrack is also out for the season.
General News Pat Taaffe will be long remembered for his association with the great Arkle and at Fairyhouse on Sunday the name Pat Taaffe will once more be seen on the jockey’s board. Tom Taaffe, Pat’s son, trains Takealookatme in the bumper and both his son, 16-Y-O Pat junior and the 5-Y-O gelding will make their track debuts. Top class hurdler Arctic Fire has been retired. The WP Mullins trained 9-Y-0 won the 2015 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle in Fairyhouse and at last year’s Cheltenham Festival won the County Hurdle. He finished 2nd to stable mate Faugheen three times, in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, the Punchestown Champion

Seamus Duke ON SPORT Paddy was an incredible clubman @SeamusDuke
I wouldn’t have been a personal friend of Paddy Mulvey’s as he was from a different generation to me, but he was a man that I knew from my earliest days in Roscommon GAA, whether it was at underage matches and then later, at meetings and matches and anything else that was going on. He was an incredible clubman.
Yes he loved his county and he was a great Roscommon man, but he was happiest when he was in Croghan or around the county with Shannon Gaels teams, underage or senior, or at a Scór event. He was the most passionate GAA man I ever met at a club game. During the summer when the day was fine, I al-
ways remember Paddy would hang his suit jacket on a fence post close to the side-line and he would parade up and down the line encouraging the players and ‘advising’ the referee. When the game was over it was over, and Paddy would always be gracious in defeat. It was always on to the next meeting, the next match, the
next Scór event. If you wanted to know the meaning of the term “life-long GAA man” it was probably invented with Paddy Mulvey in mind. He was a clubman through and through. He was about as far away from the SKY TV deal and from the corporate GAA as one could get. He gave his life to the
GAA and never got one thing in return, and he didn’t want anything either. Paddy Mulvey was a grassroots man and one of the greatest that the association has ever had. I am so glad that his efforts were recognised when he got a President’s Award a few years ago. It is people like Paddy Mulvey that has made the
I see fixtures trouble ahead
The darts made for great TV!
Already, with matches postponed because of bad weather last weekend, there is the possibility of chaos with fixtures and it is only the third week of the year. If just one more Sunday is lost because of bad weather then there will be a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth. The fixtures calendar is so tight that there is no room for error. Someone pointed out to me that there is now just one free Sunday between now and the last Sunday in March and that’s the day of the FBD League final! Even Roscommon v Galway in the FBD League is fixed for the same day as Michael Glavey’s play in the All-Ireland club semi-final. I predicted fixture chaos this year. I hope it doesn’t come to pass but it is looking likely even at this early stage.
Over the top reaction to Pool signing The Premier League is already over but one of the biggest games of the season is on this coming weekend with the clash of Manchester City and Liverpool. City are a fantastic team and if they are at their best then Liverpool will not beat them. City are so far ahead of the rest it is embarrassing for the league itself. When was the title ever decided before Christmas? Liverpool were right to cash in on Philippe Coutinho, and in Virgil van Dijk they have bought a top quality defender. However, the wild and totally over the top reaction to his debut against Everton last weekend was ridiculous. Everton are a very poor side and Liverpool struggled to beat them. Yes, Van Dijk scored the winner, but let’s see how he fits in after 10 or 15 games against top class opposition. If Liverpool want to be serious about making progress then they must buy a top class goalkeeper and at least one more defender. Nevertheless Liverpool v City could well be worth a look.
How much? Liverpool’s new signing, Virgil van Dijk enjoyed a dream debut against Everton in the FA Cup last Friday.
GAA the organisation it is today. The crowds at his removal and funeral showed just how much people respected and liked Paddy Mulvey. It was a pleasure to have known him. To his family I extend my deepest sympathy. They certainly don’t make them like Paddy Mulvey anymore. A dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
Roscommon overcame a poor Leitrim side in the opening round of the FBD League in Annaduff last Wednesday. Pic: Andrew Fox
The dust is settling after another sensational World PDC Darts finals over the Christmas. The fairy-tale of a parting title for Phil Taylor did not materialise but it was fitting that as one superstar of the game was departing another, Rob Cross, was announcing his arrival. It was fantastic television and Barry Hearn and his organisation have done a massive job promoting it to the level it is at now. The semi-final match between Cross and the defending champion Michael van Gerwen was one of the best I have ever seen. On the night I was planning to go out but once I started watching I could not leave it. It was compelling entertainment that went to the very last leg. To think that Rob Cross got £400,000 for winning the world title shows how far the sport has come from the image of pot-bellied players swilling pints as they played for the title in smoke-filled rooms in the decades gone by.
Tougher FBD test ahead this weekend At the time of going to press Roscommon will have played their second game in the FBD League and I certainly hope that they learn more than they learned from their first outing against Leitrim. I have many fond associations with Leitrim GAA, especially from my time spent in Shannon-
side Radio but I don’t think I have ever seen a poorer team than the one they fielded in Annaduff last week. If Leitrim do not improve they will struggle in the league, and even more serious they could be up against it when they face New York in the championship in May.
With regard to Roscommon and whatever happens in Kiltoom on Wednesday night, there should be a great challenge for them in Dr Hyde Park on Sunday when Mayo come calling. I know that results in the FBD League do not count for anything but supporters will remember
how Mayo made a big comeback in the game in Kiltoom last year and we all saw what it meant to their players to win that game. Without trying to second guess Kevin McStay and the selectors I think we will have an idea what the team for the league will be when we see the team on Sunday.
Leinster ahead of the pack The rugby inter-provincial series over the festive season has shown that Leinster are a good bit ahead of the rest of the Irish sides. Their performance against Ulster last Saturday was sensational. Jordan Larmour and Andrew Porter are really exciting new players and Larmour could well ensure that a legend like Rob Kearney will be sitting on the bench for the rest of the season and maybe the rest of his career. Joe Schmidt must also be rubbing his hands with glee at the arrival of Larmour and Porter with the Six Nations and preparations for the World Cup on the way. Connacht were well beaten against Munster but they were ever so unlucky against Leinster at the RDS last week. It was a mighty game of rugby and Connacht could have won it, and probably should have. But they are very inconsistent. I know that they are putting all their eggs into the European basket now and on their best day they are capable of winning the Challenge Cup. They must ensure a home draw now for the quarter-finals. They should do that this weekend.
Jordan Larmour touches down for Leinster against Ulster.

New era as Comerford takes hurling reins SEAMUS DUKE
The new Roscommon senior hurling manager Ciaran Comerford has said that he “couldn’t be happier” with how preparations are going for the team ahead of what is going to be a very busy season. Hopes are high that Roscommon can progress in 2017 after a disastrous 2017 in league and championship. The Laois man says that the panel have been working hard and have been training away over the past month and a half and have played a number of challenge games in recent weeks. “Our training has been going well. We have done 20 sessions to date and we have played a number of challenge games. We played Armagh last Sunday in Armagh and won by 3-18 to 0-11 and we also played Tooreen - and we are playing Mayo next Sunday. “We have looked at between 35 and 40 players and we have settled on a panel of 28 or 29 coming up to the league. The lads we have are working very hard and they are a great honest bunch of lads and are a pleasure to work with I have to say,” he said. Ciaran says that fitness and a style of play is very important to develop at this time of the year. “We are concentrating on getting the players fit and developing systems of play and the response from the lads has been great. We have a minimum of 23 or 24 at training every evening,” he said. Roscommon have been training at AIT, Athlone GAA Club and in Ballyforan, and Ciaran says that they intend to get off to a winning start in the league on
January 28th. “We face Louth in our first game and it is a fairly intensive league campaign this year and we must get off to a good start. Our first aim will be to get out of that division and there is no reason why we cannot do that,” he said. Then looking further down the road the aim is to do well in the Christy Ring Cup. “Some of the stronger teams have moved up from the Christy Ring Cup to the new Tier 2 competition so we will have a great chance to do well in that competition but we will concentrate on the league first,” he said. Ciaran will be without some familiar names as he prepares for the upcoming season. “Micheal Kelly is not with us and Cathal Kenny has not recovered from his injury yet but we expect him back. Johnny Coyne is gone to the USA for work and he is a huge loss too. But we have some very good young players on the panel and the likes of Daniel Glynn will be stepping up this year. There is plenty of young talent on the panel,” he said. “We have worked very hard in training but the only way of knowing how we are progressing is when we play competitive games. But I am confident that we can do well,” he concluded. Ciaran Comerford will be joined by former player Ronan O’Meara, Johnny Keane from Portumna who is the hurling coach, and Gary Murphy (who lives in Four Roads) who will look after strength and conditioning. A new era dawns for Roscommon hurling.
Former Laois player Ciaran Comerford (pictured playing for his club Borris-Kilcotton) is the new Roscommon senior hurling manager.

Ladies set for New Year The recent Roscommon Ladies AGM did
not conclude all business and so an EGM is scheduled for 7.30 pm in Hannon’s Hotel on Monday, January 22nd. Rosemary Coyle, injury fund coordinator, will address the meeting and will answer any queries in relation to the fund on the night. Clubs are requested to send details of club committees to the Ladies Board Secretary immediately. Roscommon Ladies are in action against Mayo in the Connacht Winter League this Sunday (14th) at 2 at Michael Glavey’s.
Referees’ meeting this Friday The Annual General Meeting for all existing referees takes place this Friday night (12th) at 8 pm in Hannon’s Hotel in Roscommon town. A full turn-out is expected as there are many important issues up for discussion. Clubs are also reminded that the new Referee Course is taking place at the end of January. Each Club must have at least one
person to put forward for this course. For further information, contact Haulie Beirne (Referee Administrator) on 0868293845.
Neighbours to visit The Hyde Despite the fact that it may only be an FBD League game there is sure to be plenty of interest in the clash of Roscommon and Mayo on Sunday next at Dr Hyde Park. Throw in at 2 pm. With the cancellation of the match between Mayo and Galway at MacHale Park last Sunday, that match has been re-fixed for this Friday evening at the same venue and it will mean that Mayo will be playing their third game in five days. Some of their main players will be back on the panel after the team holiday to Malaysia. Last year in Kiltoom, Mayo staged a late recovery to overcome Roscommon in the FBD League and clashes between the sides are always well contested. This one will certainly be no different.

Roscommon proved too sharp in attack once more as they ran up another impressive total against Sligo in the FBD League in Kiltoom last night (Wednesday). The damage was done in the first half when Roscommon scored three goals, two from Cian McKeon and one from Diarmuid Murtagh. The home side were coasting for much of the second half but Kevin McStay and his selectors will be concerned with the concession of two goals in injury-time. Played on a fine evening, conditions suited attackers on both sides as hard tackles were few and far between. Adrian Marren converted a ’45 in the second minute for Sligo but two minutes later Roscommon struck their first goal when Cian McKeon was successful at his second attempt. Stephen Coen and Nathan
Mullen kicked fine points for Sligo but Roscommon got a second goal two minutes later. Ciaráin Murtagh made a fine catch before finding Cian McKeon, who struck low to the net for his second goal of the game. By the 20th minute Sligo had narrowed the gap to three points: 2-5 to 0-8. Roscommon struck the last four scores of the half including a point from play from Diarmuid Murtagh and a free from Ciaráin Murtagh. Then on the 31st minute Sligo conceded a very soft goal, Eddie McGuinness’ hand pass was cut-out by Diarmuid Murtagh and he finished to an empty net. Ciaráin Murtagh added a point in the final minute of the half to leave the scores 2-5 to 0-8 at the break. Roscommon totally dominated the third quarter and they had outscored Sligo by 0-10 to 0-2 by the 65th minute, with subs Finbar Cregg and Donie Smith impressive.

But late in the game Sligo full-forward Adrian Marren lobbed Aaron Brady for a goal and then on the call of full-time Kyle Cawley grabbed a second goal for Sligo to put a bit of respectability on the scoreline from their point of view. Best for Roscommon were Fergal Lennon, Conor Daly, Ciaráin Mur-
tagh, Ciaran Lennon and subs Finbar Cregg and Donie Smith. Unbeaten Roscommon now face Mayo at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday. Roscommon: Aaron Brady; Seán McDermott, John McManus, Niall McInerney; Conor Daly (0-2), Seán Mullooly, Fergal Lennon (0-2); Enda Smith, Fintan Cregg; Niall
