Jenny Higgins… Western Gaels, Roscommon and Western Warriors What’s your idea of perfect night in? I get a lot of these this time of year! It would have to include some nice food and maybe watching a Denzel Washington movie with my boyfriend, Cathal. And ideal night out? Ideal night out would be a few ‘quiet’ drinks with the team after a big game, whether it be with Western Gaels, Western Warriors or Roscommon. They never disappoint.
Best movie/Netflix/TV series you’ve watched recently? I recently watched ‘The Greatest Showman’ with my nephew...I think I enjoyed it more than him! The soundtrack is brilliant!
Ideal weekend away in Ireland?
What do you do to relax?
I’m just back from a weekend away in Westport with my family for my Dad’s birthday. I would definitely call that my ideal weekend away.
Not surprisingly, I exercise. I love to hit the gym or go for a run after a long day, no better way to relax.
What about a holiday abroad?
What’s your favourite place in Co. Roscommon?
I would love to go back to Thailand, one of the most amazing places I have ever been.
Undoubtedly, my home, Fairymount. It’s the highest peak in Roscommon... our claim to fame!
Our Person of the Week… Roscommon captain Conor Devaney put in another allaction performance as he led the Rossies to Division Two silverware against Cavan at Croke Park. He also picked up the Man of the Match award and made the GAA Team of the Week alongside teammate David Murray!

Bad WEEK
It was a good week for Athleague CCE and the Castlecoote-Fuerty committee as Fleadh Cheoil Ros Comáin was once again staged in the area.
Quote of the week
“
“Some of Roscommon’s attacking play in particular was out of the very top drawer. The kick passing, the first time football, the finishing, was superb. It was an exhibition about everything that is good in our game” – Pat Spillane on RTE Allianz League Sunday
It was another turbulent week for Irish rugby as it emerged Irish international Craig Gilroy would face an Ulster Rugby and IRFU investigation into a Whatsapp message which featured in the recent rape trial of teammates Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding. Gilroy has since apologised for the message.
Compiled by PAUL HEALY
I live in the countryside and I do my best to keep my property clean and tidy. I am fed up however of other road users destroying the public road with clay, muck etc. Surely there is a law prohibiting this practice? Please advise me. Provisions within the Roads Act 1993 address the prevention of damage to public roads and the protection of people who use them. While most landowners are careful when using public roads for agricultural activities, there may also be instances where roads are damaged through careless and unlawful activities. It is an offence to allow any material, such as clay, slurry or fodder, onto a public road, where such material is, or could be a hazard to road users or interferes with the safe use or maintenance of the road. Landowners are obliged to ensure that:a. The transport of winter fodder over public roads is on the basis that there is no alternative off-road means of access. b. Adequate measures are in place between gateways and storage locations to minimise the amount of clay that is carried onto the public road. c. Tyres of tractors, etc. are regularly washed down to ensure that soil is not carried onto the public road. d. Fodder, plastic or twines are not left on grass margins. e. Livestock are kept and fed an adequate distance from the road so that road drainage is not interfered with and slurry is prevented from flowing onto the public road. f. Any soil, fodder etc., which is deposited on the road is removed immediately. g. Vehicles are not parked for long periods on the hard shoulder / grass margins of the public road. Parking in this manner may cause damage to the public road and may also limit sight lines for roads users. It is also an offence to deface, damage or dig up a public road without applying for, and receiving, prior permission of the County Council in the form of a Road Opening Licence. It should be noted that the public road extends from fence to fence and includes footpaths / grass verges and roadside drains. This column is prepared by Dolores Gacquin, Solicitor. PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor
paul@roscommonpeople.ie
…and the OsKaR goes to…Fuerty! Friday
Pictured in the Radisson Hotel for ‘A Night at the OsKaRs’ (a Fuerty GAA Mulhern Park fundraiser) were the Judges on the night: Adrian Keegan, Keegan Agri Feeds and Keegan Tractor Sales, Minister Helen McEntee and Paul Healy, Editor of Roscommon People. Picture: Andrew Fox
Paul Healy on Brendan O’Connor’s cutting edge show; Kevin Sharkey’s doomed presidential bid; the Roscommon Easter Parade and the Roscommon Easter rising in Croker; a nice goal by a promising 33-year-old …and Fuerty goes to the OsKaRs… Wednesday Of course I agree with the critics: Brendan O’Connor’s ‘Cutting Edge’ has an undoubted edge over all around it. Only once during this or the last series do I recall a lacklustre panel (no names – I’ll spare the guests); generally, the mix is excellent. Without wishing to undermine those guests, I think many of them could appear on other chat shows and not make a comparable impact; they are engrossing on ‘Cutting Edge’ (a) because of the format and (b) because O’Connor is a good listener and a compassionate, thoughtful interviewer. Now it’s fairly obvious that some of the show’s big moments – the emotional confession or testy exchange – are part-lined up in advance, the product of good research. But we’ll forgive all involved that bit of shrewd pre-planning. Truth is, this is excellent television, always delivering, easily overshadowing other long-established shows. It’s on RTE One on Wednesday nights at 9.30 pm and it’s well worth watching.
Saturday Saw five minutes (too much) of would-be Presidential candidate Kevin Sharkey on the Ray D’Arcy Show. Yawn. Tiresome. Yawn again. Self-publicist, obsessed with air-time, going nowhere. Pass the remote control! (Update: Mr. Sharkey was downright rude on the Tonight Show on Tuesday night; an exercise in ‘How not to win people over to your presidential ambitions’).
Sunday Just how cold was it in Croke Park on Sunday? The reports from the East were harrowing! The Roscommon fans who went to Croke Park came back with the Division Two cup, but also with terrifying tales of viciously cold weather. It wasn’t nearly as bad in Roscommon town, where duty called,
Fuerty GAA Club staged ‘A Night at the OsKaRs’ in Athlone tonight, proceeds going to their Mulhern Park development project. I was a ‘Judge’ on the night, along with local businessman Adrian Keegan and Minister Helen McEntee. It was a massive success and a very enjoyable night. Here’s how it worked: over the past number of weeks, Fuerty locals, working with Kevin Rowe Promotions, produced six films/television programmes, all shot in the local area, all shown for the first time on Good Friday night. The venue was the Radisson Blu Hotel, and there were about 600 people present in the audience. Each film was 10-12 minutes long. The productions were: The Snapper, Goodfellas, Rocky, The Hangover, Fr. Ted and The Field. It was a great night. The quality of all of the productions was excellent. The effort put in by the locals was tremendous, and some genuinely impressive acting talent was revealed! Kudos also to the professionals: the filming was slick, the use of props inspired, the editing – under what had to be
meaning I couldn’t get to Croker. The Roscommon Town Easter Parade was due to start at 1 o’clock, and in a distinctly un-Irish bombshell development, it started at 1 o’clock. I was caught on the hop, casting an eye over some of the floats in the CBS grounds when the familiar sounds of the Castlerea Brass & Reed Band signalled the start of the parade. ‘Down town’, a good crowd had gathered, and the weather really was quite pleasant. About forty floats took part in the parade. It was, as ever, a lovely occasion, particularly for children, who were wide-eyed in wonder at the giant cartoon characters, not to mention the flying sweets that mysteriously emerge from lorry windows. Although a bigger number of floats would always be desirable, the healthy entry once again showcased the variety of local businesses, sporting organisations, service providers and community/voluntary groups that oil the wheels of our community. And this year’s winners, to whom congratulations are extended, are – Best overall: Roscommon Show; Most Entertaining: RosFM; Best Community/Voluntary: Oran Mothers & Others; Best Commercial: SherryFitzgerald/P. Burke; Judges’ Special Award: Vincent Timothy/Vintage Cars. One of those vintage cars had ‘Donald Trump’ and ‘Kim Jong Un’ in the front. Trump, naturally, was in the driving seat. The punctual kick-off no doubt had much to do with a certain GAA game in Dublin. It turned out to be a right rollercoaster, eight goals shared between Roscommon and Cavan, plus, remarkably, 28 points. Roscommon were fully deserving winners (4-16 to 4-12) in this exciting, topsy-turvy Allianz Division Two football final. It was a game we had to win three or four times. Fluid and fun, terrifically entertaining. We were reassured once again about the quality of our attack, a group of free-spirited young men which so often looks like it is only a few performance percentage points away from destroying defences (which it more or less did on Sunday). Encouraging too is evidence of the strength in depth which we are amassing. True, we were hit for soft enough goals, but Roscommon were intent on playing with some abandon on Sunday, intent on letting loose. The summer is likely to bring a different, more balanced rhythm. Later, when we met a few of the returning fans, we were interested in their analysis of the game. But most of them just wanted to talk about one thing: the unbelievable cold in Croker!
Tuesday Juventus and Real Madrid, epic names from our childhood, our present, the future. Exotic, evocative names, an antidote to any bleak reflections on ‘the beautiful game’. Romance from Real,
pressing time constraints – impressive. We had the difficult task of selecting ‘OsKaR’ recipients. Thomas Clayton was superb as ‘Rocky’, so too was Padraic Cuddy, who played ‘The Bull McCabe’ in The Field. Padraic was a deserving winner of the OsKaR for ‘Best Actor’, after a memorable, powerful performance as the Bull. Best Actress went to Sara McGahon, a terrifically authentic and funny Mrs. Doyle in Fr. Ted. A very deserving recipient; I also think Jacinta Hanley deserves honourable mention for her performance as Kay (‘the mother’) in The Snapper. Best Supporting Actress was Sharon Conneely (great as Jackie in The Snapper) and Best Supporting Actor was an inspired Matty Ward (Micky in Rocky). There were many other excellent performances, e.g. John Connolly in Goodfellas…and others, too many to mention! Best film award went to The Field, a passionate, emotional production which brought the house down. Congrats to all cast members and all ‘behind the camera’. It was a great community effort, which created a great night and memories that will live on. Well done, Fuerty; over now to our friends in Tulsk!
Cold? Who said it’s cold?! A cheerleader from Banna Máirseála, Co. Monaghan pictured at the Roscommon Easter Parade. Picture: Andrew Fox
something tougher but still admirable from ‘Juve’. They met in the Champions League on Tuesday. I didn’t get to see the whole game, but with more than a passing interest I checked in on Twitter. I wondered how that 33-year-old egotist, at one time derided by a doubting Dunphy and Giles, might fare. Twitter revealed that Ronaldo had scored on two minutes. Later, with 26 minutes to go, it’s still 1-0 and I’m checking in again, this time on television. How’s the old man doing? Then, a bit of a wonder goal! A beautifully executed overhead kick, a flamboyant score on a gigantic stage. And I’ve always forgiven Ronaldo his ego, his touch of arrogance. Admire instead his decency, his touching humility tonight when acknowledging the Juventus fans for their applause for his special goal. Fair is fair: Ronaldo is probably as modest as he can reasonably be expected to be! Last Sunday, randomly, our son asked a few of us: ‘Who’s the best, Ronaldo or Messi?’ I always thought it was Messi. Now, for the first time, I’m beginning to wonder. P.S. Graeme Souness (on TV3 tonight) is a great tv analyst.

Murphy’s alarm on waiting lists Over 6,000 people nationally are waiting for an Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) inpatient/day case appointment, with a quarter of those waiting for over a year. This is according to figures obtained by Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy. Deputy Murphy recently tabled a parliamentary question with the Minister for Health in relation to the number of patients waiting for an ENT (Otolaryngology) in each of the CHO areas at the end of January 2018. The figures revealed that nationally there are a total of 6,470 patients waiting for an ENT appointment, with 1,601 or a quarter of those people waiting for a year or more. Deputy Murphy described these figures as “totally unacceptable”. “The Saolta Hospital Group, which includes University Hospital Galway, Roscommon University Hospital, Portiuncula University Hospital, Mayo, Letterkenny and Sligo hospitals, had the highest number of people on a waiting list for an ENT appointment with a total of 1,839 –which accounts for 28% of the national total waiting list. “A breakdown of the figures for the Saolta Hospital Group shows that some 569 people in that group were waiting for one year or more. This is symptomatic once again of a health service which is failing to deliver for people”. Deputy Murphy called on the Government to address these waiting lists.

Cllr. Liam Callaghan has slammed the ongoing illegal dumping of rubbish along the R370 road between Ballinameen and Frenchpark. Cllr. Callaghan was speaking at the March meeting of Roscommon County Council where he highlighted a “dump-like situation” that is emerging along the R370 west of Ballinameen towards Frenchpark. “There are now so many ways to dispose of unwanted household goods that literally throwing it along the side of the road is no longer acceptable” he said. Cllr. Callaghan has asked the Council to monitor this area with CCTV equipment. He added: “It is sad to think that our schools are educating children on how to recycle and reuse waste and yet some of their peers at home continue to dispose of their waste in this manner”. Cllr. Callaghan called on the Council to act to address this issue.
Season highlight at Arts Centre this Saturday One of the theatre highlights this season at Roscommon Arts Centre takes place this Saturday (7th) at 8 pm as Pan Pan Theatre Company take to the stage with their production of ‘The Importance Of Nothing’. A comedy about a drama therapy class set in an imaginary prison where a therapist and her husband have dedicated their lives to conducting anti-homophobic workshops – using the life and works of Oscar Wilde! The Importance of Nothing is partly inspired by Wilde’s period in prison after his conviction for homosexual activity in 1895. With a stellar cast which includes Mark O’Halloran (Adam and Paul), Andrew Bennett (Garage, Moone Boy) and Sonya Kelly (How To Keep An Alien), this is a play that has been described as ‘human, touching and funny’. Naughten launches ‘Reimagining St. Brigid’s’ Minister Denis Naughten has announced a new project he is embarking on: ‘Reimagining St. Brigid’s’, which aims to stimulate debate on the future of the site. “St. Brigid’s Hospital is an iconic landmark in Ballinasloe and I am currently embarking on a project – with the assistance of the public – which aims to explore potential new uses for the site,” explained Minister Naughten. “This is a site with enormous potential and this project will be the first step in reimagining what the future could hold for it. Everyone I meet in the town, and beyond, has an opinion on what the site should be used for and now I am inviting people to share those opinions”. As part of this project Minister Naughten is asking everyone with views on the future of St. Brigid’s Hospital to spend a few moments completing an online survey, which will ask questions around opinions of Ballinasloe, how people use the town
and its amenities, and what they think is missing from the area. “This is an exploratory process and each survey response will be read and analysed and form part of a wider discussion on the potential future use of this site,” added Minister Naughten. “I will be working on this project with Enterprise Ireland-backed start-up Connect the Dots, specialists in meaningfully bringing people together to explore common challenges and develop innovative solutions, who will guide this process. “I would urge anyone with an opinion on the site or what is needed in the town of Ballinasloe to fill out the survey by April 23rd and also to share it with any local groups or organisations who may wish to contribute to the debate as I want to ensure as many voices as possible are heard,” said Minister Naughten. The survey can be accessed at www. DenisNaughten.ie.

Some of our local politicians continue to amaze with their versatility, indeed their sheer showbiz prowess! Recently, the (almost) omnipresent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice not only compered a talent show at Coláiste Mhuire Ballygar…he also treated the audience to his now famous lip sync of Meat Loaf/Bat out of Hell. Deputy Eugene Murphy, veteran MC for the annual Easter Parade in Strokestown – and of many more events – was in charge of the mic at the Roscommon Parade on Sunday last. Meanwhile, at the Fuerty GAA/Mulhern Park ‘OsKaRs’ fundraiser in the Radisson Blu Hotel last Friday night, local politicians revealed further previously hidden talents. Government Minister Helen McEntee was a special guest Cllr. Ivan Connaughton played John O’Leary, one at the Fuerty GAA/Mulhern Park ‘A Night at the OsKaRs’ fundraiser in the Radisson Hotel last Friday night. Minister half of the quarrelling couple in Fr. Why Murphy may look to counsel councillors! PAUL HEALY
Cllr. John Keogh is still seen as the most likely ‘chosen one’ as Fianna Fáil prepares to add a candidate to run with sitting TD Eugene Murphy in the next General Election. Fianna Fáil has been in some disarray locally in recent times follow-

Aspiring Fine Gael councillor Andrew Reynolds says that he has been officially selected as a Local Area Representative by the Fine Gael National Executive. He will in due course go to a Selection Convention with the aim of contesting the next local elections. The Rooskey native said the nomination put forward by the Rooskey/Tarmonbarry Fine Gael branch had been accepted at a meeting of the Fine Gael National Executive Committee on March 13th and that he is “looking forward immensely to representing the people of the region in an official capacity in the party.” Mr. Reynolds further commented that it is “heartening and reassuring” to hear that crime figures across County Roscommon are down by almost 60% in the first two months of this year, compared to the same period in 2017. He said the figures were released by Acting Chief Superintendent Tom Curley at a recent meeting of the Roscommon Joint Policing Committee.
ing various controversies involving (some) sitting councillors. Deputy Eugene Murphy, broadly speaking, has managed to navigate through the difficulties and is still well placed to be in contention to retain a Dáil seat for the party. However, Deputy Murphy will be anxious to see an end to the disharmony amongst councillors as he will be reliant on at least some of them to inspire and organise teams of canvassers. There’s legitimate cause for concern for the Murphy camp on that front when one looks at the current status of FF councillors. Cllr. Paddy Kilduff has resigned from Fianna Fáil after 50 years’ service, so he (or ‘his people’) obviously won’t be knocking on doors for the party. Cllr. Ivan Connaughton may not run again, and any sud-

den loss of the Connaughton influence would be problematic for any sitting FF TD or aspiring TD, whoever they may be; Cllr. Keogh, as mentioned, could yet have his own campaign to run, as he could be added to the Fianna Fáil ticket. Shannonside Radio recently speculated that Cllr. Rachel Doherty could run herself, in an adjoining constituency. It all adds up to a headache for Deputy Murphy. Elsewhere, the political anoraks are saying that Michael Fitzmaurice is steadily rising and likely to close the gap on Denis Naughten, the 2016 poll-topper. That remains to be seen. And although it remains unusual for two Independents to be elected in a three-seater, both Naughen and Fitzmaurice are seen as safe as houses next time around. Beyond that, it looks like Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael fighting it out for the other seat. The ‘health warning’ on all of this – as ever – is that we don’t yet know the full field.

The Annual
Easter Rising commemorated The Easter Rising of 1916 was commemorated in Baslic cemetery, Ballinagare last Sunday afternoon at the graveside of Stephen McDermott, who was killed along with Sean Bergin in April 1921 in the Woodlands of Loughglynn. The ceremony began with a parade to the cemetery led by a Colour Party and the Raheen Pipe Band. The proclamation was read and the Roscommon Roll of Honour called out. Wreathes were laid on the grave and among them was one on behalf of the relatives of the dead men which was laid by Michael Conneely, a grandnephew of Joe Satchwell who survived the shooting in Loughglynn wood. During the ceremony a piper played a lament as the flags were dipped and raised. Henry Owens outlined a brief history of the circumstances leading to the deaths of McDermott and Bergin on the fateful date in April 1921. A statement from the leadership of the Republican Movement was read and Garrett Banks, Dublin delivered an oration. Attending the ceremony was Billy McDermott, a nephew of Stephen McDermott, who was being commemorated. The proceedings ended with the Raheen Pipers playing the National Anthem. Earlier in the day wreathes were laid at the IRA Memorial in Shankill, Elphin. All ceremonies were held under the auspices of the Co. Roscommon IRA Commemoration Committee.
You can help make Portrunny litter-free! The National Spring Clean is Ireland’s most popular, well-recognised and successful anti-litter initiatives. Taking place during the whole month of April and now in its 20th year, the campaign encourages every sector of society to actively participate and take responsibility for litter, by actually conducting clean-ups in their own local environment. On the 7th April 2018, the community in Portrunny and catchment area are invited to come along and make Portrunny litter-free! We are hoping to carry out a litter pick on the approach roads to Portrunny. As part of this initiative, we also intend to conduct a shoreline litter pick in an effort to prevent litter and plastic from entering our oceans. Gloves, litter pickers and bags will be provided. Please wear suitable footwear and a high visibility vest. Please come along and support this initiative. We will be meeting in the car park in Portrunny at 11 am on this Saturday, 7th of April.

The President of ICMSA says he was encouraged and reassured by the policy direction on energy renewables signalled by the Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Environment at a meeting last week. Commenting after a detailed meeting with Minister Denis Naughten, Pat
McCormack said that farm-based renewable energy initiatives have the potential to not only play a significant role in meeting Ireland’s renewable targets, but also to make a massive overall contribution to rural development while helping to preserve the family farm structure which is under ongoing threat.

New tourism brand for Midlands to be launched A new tourism brand for the Midlands, taking in Co. Roscommon, is set to be launched in the coming weeks. Speaking after a meeting with Paul Keeley, business development director with Fáilte Ireland, Senator Maura Hopkins stated: “Roscommon has much to offer in terms of tourism, yet there remains an untapped potential in the tour-
ism sector within our county. “There is a need for a strong brand that will resonate with potential tourists and be used to properly market tourist amenities right across Co. Roscommon”. Senator Hopkins said that she has made her case to representatives in Failte Ireland, Tourism Ireland and to Minister with responsibility for Tourism, Brendan Griffin TD.
She added: “Fantastic work has been done to develop tourist sites such as Rathcroghan near Tulsk, Úna Bhan in Boyle, Strokestown Park and Arigna Mining Experience, among others. However, these amenities do not fall within the Wild Atlantic Way brand or the Ancient East brand. “Central to the new brand will be the Beara Brefine Way, a series of
walking trails which run from Co. Cork to Co. Cavan through East Galway and Roscommon. Locally, the route will link the Miners Way near Arigna, the Hymany Way in Galway and the Suck Valley Way in Roscommon”. A formal launch (by Minister Michael Ring) of this walking/cycling route will take place on the 9th of April in the Abbey Hotel.
GIY’s top 5 tips for National Workplace Wellbeing Day Employers across Ireland are being urged to sign up for Ireland’s fourth National Workplace Wellbeing Day on Friday, April 13th, an event which aims to improve employee wellbeing through promoting better exercise and nutrition in the workplace. GIY (Grow It Yourself) know that time spent in the garden is good for your mental and physical health. GIY founder Michael Kelly says that their GIY@ Work programme is resonating with companies that want to engage with their employees on issues of wellbeing. “We are showcasing the ways we can help companies and organisations to positively influence their employees’ wellbeing. Through GIY programmes and workshops, away days at GROW HQ and greening their offices, any company, large or small can make their employees happier, healthy and more productive”. Michael has put together his top 5 tips for improving your workplace for this year’s National Workplace Wellbeing Day. One – Eat Healthy and Eat Together Studies are suggesting that employees who don’t talk about topics other than work and eat at their desks
may have poorer mental health than those who do. Supporting healthy eating is fantastic, but encouraging employees to take their lunch breaks and eat together is even better. Two – Get More plants Research shows that certain plants act as air purifiers and also release oxygen into the atmosphere. This significantly improves indoor air quality and employee cognition. Good plants for indoors spaces include kale, mint, coriander, jade, bamboo and snake plants. Three – Let’s Go Outside Like plants, humans need regular exposure to UV light to encourage production of Vitamin D and elevate levels of serotonin in the body. This makes us feel happier and more content. Allowing for a few minutes of outside time during the day can dramatically increase employee wellbeing, particularly if there’s some nature involved (trees, plants, grass). Four – Grow Food Growing food is a mindful, hopeful, purposeful activity that reconnects you with food and health and can even be done your desk (we call it al-desko growing). Some of our partner companies have put in veg gardens where employees

can do some food growing on their breaks – getting your hands in the soil is known to boost serotonin levels and gives employees access to delicious, seasonal, organic food. Five – Encourage volunteering One guaranteed way to increase productivity in your office is to create a sense of purpose and belonging. Encouraging employees
to contribute to something meaningful in the community, like a community garden, through paid staff leave, in or outside of normal working hours, is a fantastic way to develop organisational pride and improve employee morale. And a bonus one…Eat with the Seasons Yes, a free fruit bowl is a great way to encourage healthier snacking in
the workplace. It is also a healthy way to get through the morning and afternoon tea time sugar lows. But research also shows that seasonal food is food at its most nutritious and delicious. So, think about what’s in the fruit bowl and whether it is in season. For further details and ongoing support for getting healthier at home and at work, see: www.Giy.ie.

Roscommon Rose Deirdre Cribbin was part of a group of 25 Roses and two Escorts which travelled to Chernobyl with Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children International for five days recently. Describing the trip as “a fantastic experience”, Deirdre said the group travelled on St. Valentine’s Day. “We were based in Vesnova Children’s Asylum, which caters for the physical and intellectual needs of 174 children. The village of Vesnova is located approximately 175km from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. “I was amazed by the beauty of the building itself, which has improved greatly since Adi Roche founded it. This is all thanks to teams of voluntary Irish tradesmen and Irish donations over the last number of years,” she said. The Castleplunkett native added that she found it difficult to put the emotional experience into words. “It was emotional, but extremely rewarding. The chil-

dren of Vesnova have suffered greatly because of Chernobyl, but they are so full of love and hope. They welcomed us with open arms and taught us to appreciate the little things in life”. Deirdre and the other Roses also got the opportunity to meet charity founder, Adi Roche. “She spoke from the heart about each child, and she is a real inspiration to us all. Adi has taught us the true meaning
of humanitarianism”. Deirdre once again thanked the people of Roscommon. “None of this would have been possible for me without the support of the people of Roscommon, particularly my local village of Castleplunkett. I am delighted to say that €2,700 was raised in the county for Chernobyl Children International, and I am so grateful to everyone who donated to this worthy cause,” she concluded.

Prices in Roscommon up by €10,000 per house, claims MyHome.ie Property prices in Roscommon have risen by €10,000 in the last year, according to the latest MyHome.ie Property Report in association with Davy. The report for Q1 2018 shows that the median asking price for a property in the county now stands at €120,000. This is up €9.1% in the quarter and annually from €110,000 this time last year and at the end of 2017. The latest price increase has left the asking price for a home in the county at its highest level since it stood at €139,000 five years ago in Q1 2013. The latest increase was reflected in the asking price of a 3-bed semi-detached house in the county. This rose by 7.1% in the quarter
– an increase of €5,000 – to €75,000, leaving it at the same level it was at this time last year. Despite the increase Roscommon now stands alongside Longford as the cheapest place in the country to buy a 3-bed semi-detached home. While its median asking price has been at the €75,000 mark for four of the last five quarters, prices for this house type in the county haven’t been higher in exactly three years since it stood at €79,000 in Q1 2015. While overall prices increased, the asking price of a 4-bed semi-detached house in Roscommon remained unchanged in the first three months of the year at €100,000. This is down 8.3% on this time last year
when the asking price stood at €109,000. The number of properties for sale in Co. Roscommon
on MyHome.ie has fallen by 7.5% in the last year as stock levels across the country remain an issue. The average
prices of newly-listed properties nationally rose by 4.8% in Q1, while prices in Dublin rose by 3.3%. Newly-listed properties are seen as the most reliable indicator of future price movements. The median asking price for new sales nationally is €260K while in Dublin it’s €345K. The figure for outside Dublin is €210K. Nationally, asking prices are up 9.5% on the year, while in Dublin price inflation is 8.2%. The author of the report, Conall MacCoille, Chief Economist at Davy, said that while house price inflation would remain close to 10% outside Dublin for 2018, stretched affordability in the capital and a pick-up in housing supply suggested the rate of inflation would continue to moderate.
time to go sale agreed on a property in the county now stands at just over six months. The report found that the

An overview by Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors Most of us have read the numerous media reports documenting what has become known as the tracker mortgage scandal. If you believe that you have been affected by the tracker mortgage scandal, then you may be entitled to seek redress and compensation* against your bank. What is a tracker mortgage? Tracker mortgages are a type of mortgage where the interest rate charged by the bank follows or ‘tracks’ the European Central Bank (ECB) rate. During the global financial crisis this ECB rate dropped to historically low rates resulting in tracker mortgage holders paying very low interest rates on their mortgages. How customers were negatively affected? Many customers, in consultation with their bank, moved off their tracker rate to a fixed rate for a planned period of time. Some
customers were inappropriately advised to avail of lower fixed rates at the time. It has emerged that thousands of such customers who tried to switch back to their tracker rate were prevented in doing so by their bank. It has been reported that thousands of other customers who did actually have a tracker mortgage were charged a higher rate of interest than they should have been. How can Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors help? The banks are currently offering redress in three ways: Reinstating the appropriate tracker rate; Paying any money that is owed; Offering compensation.
Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors argue that compensation on offer in many instances is not adequate, and in our experience is often derisory. “Each compensation offer should be made on a case-by-case basis and should address how the over-charging affected each customer. “The mortgage lenders are however taking a standard restrictive approach in this redress scheme that takes no cognisance of the personal impacts on borrowers. “In some cases the compensation offered is wholly inadequate considering the devastating consequences customers have had
to endure through no fault of their own”. Customers are advised to initially take the settlements on offer as it is not prejudicial to whatever challenge they feel is required, subsequent to receiving appropriate professional advice. At the very least, wronged customers should have their cases professionally reviewed to consider the adequacy of the compensation offered. Customers may feel that their solicitor would be best placed to offer advice on whether the compensation offered is sufficient to compensate them adequately for not just the over-charged amount but also for all loss, damage, inconvenience, suffering and distress. Please feel free to contact Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors on 090-6478433 for expert advice specific to your situation. All enquiries will be with in strict confidence. (See bccsolicitors.ie).

The trade during the day was quite similar but the evening time was busier than usual. We put a band on to mark the day and this went down well,” he said. With business recently disrupted due to harsh winter weather, many establishments viewed Good Friday as a day back in terms of takings. Brian believes this was certainly the case for JJ’s: “We were down a day because of the recent snow so we are almost back to normal now”. As for the lifting of the Good Friday ban on alcohol sales, Brian said the decision was overdue. “It was an old law and it didn’t really make much sense anymore,” he concluded.
Gatehouse are back in the (arts) building DAN DOONER
Roscommon-based traditional group Gatehouse make a welcome return to the Roscommon Arts Centre on Thursday, 12th of April from 8 pm. The group have gone from strength to strength since the release of their critically acclaimed solo album, Tús Nua, in 2016. Gatehouse have been busy touring Ireland, the UK and Norway, along with playing prestigious festivals. The Gatehouse line-up is made up of highly-regarded young singer, Rachel Garvey, multiinstrumentalist Jacinta McEvoy on guitar and concertina, John McEvoy on fiddle and John Wynne on flutes and whistles. Gatehouse lead singer Rachel
Garvey is looking forward to another busy year with the group. The 29-year-old Kilteevan native is particularly excited about the upcoming performance at the Roscommon Arts Centre. “Yes, we’re all looking forward to that. Patsy Hanly will come and play and it’ll be nice to have him on stage with us. We’ll also be accompanied by a Sean Nós dancer from Strokestown called Ryan Owens so it should be a really good night,” she told the Roscommon People recently. Rachel started singing back in primary school with Patsy Hanly’s late wife, Pauline. “Pauline was a neighbour and her children went to the same school. She started traditional singing lessons in the school.
She’d come in once a week with songs and encourage us to sing”. Pauline’s influence had a lasting effect on Rachel, who had started singing traditional songs in English before going on to learn Sean Nós songs at summer schools such as the Dr. Douglas Hyde Summer School in Ballaghaderreen. Gatehouse are back in the studio recording a new album which Rachel says will be released in the autumn or early next year. There are also trips abroad to look forward to in 2019. “We’re hoping to go to New Zealand next January, we’ve been invited to a couple of festivals there. We’re also hopefully going to be visiting Chicago
next April too so that’s something to look forward to,” she added. For now though, Gatehouse
will be entertaining audiences closer to home, starting with the performance at the arts centre next Thursday evening. Some
tickets are still available from the box office (090-6625824) for what promises to be a wonderful night of music.

WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Three times in today’s Psalm we cry out a victory shout: “His mercy endures forever”. Truly we’ve known the everlasting love of God, who has come to us as our Savior. By the blood and water that flowed from Jesus’ pierced side (see John 19:34), we’ve been made God’s children, as we hear in today’s Epistle. Yet we never met Jesus, never heard Him teach, never saw Him raised from the dead. His saving Word came to us in the Church – through the ministry of the Apostles, who in today’s Gospel are sent as He was sent. He was made a life-giving Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 15:45) and He filled His Apostles with that Spirit. As we hear in today’s First Reading, they bore witness to His Resurrection with great power. And through their witness, handed down in the Church through the centuries, their teaching and traditions have reached us (see Acts 2:42). We encounter Him as the Apostles did - in the breaking of the bread on the Lord’s day (see Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Revelation 1:10). There is something liturgical about the way today’s Gospel scenes unfold. It’s as if John is trying to show us how the risen Lord comes to us in the liturgy and sacraments. In both scenes it is Sunday night. The doors are bolted tight, yet Jesus mysteriously comes. He greets them with an expression, “Peace be with you,” used elsewhere by divine messengers (see Daniel 10:19; Judges 6:23). He shows them signs of His real bodily presence. And on both nights the disciples respond by joyfully receiving Jesus as their “Lord.” Isn’t this what happens in the Mass – where our Lord speaks to us in His Word, and gives Himself to us in the sacrament of His Body and Blood? Let us approach the altar with joy, knowing that every Eucharist is the day the Lord has made – when the victory of Easter is again made wonderful in our eyes. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory.com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

FRANK BRANDON’S
unique take on life ...
A Good Friday with a difference (and a great run for our rugby heroes) It’s a mild enough Easter Saturday morning, and as I write this, I am reflecting on the most unusual Good Friday that I have ever experienced in the many years that I’ve spent upon this earth. It started off by being the first Good Friday that I ever had to work, as up to this year, even though other shops were open, we stayed closed. However, we finally gave in to modern commercial reality and reluctantly (at least for me) we opened and put in the normal Friday retail shift. In truth it was a busy enough day, but I pulled the plug short of 5 pm, hit for home and the dinner, and shortly after 6.30 pm I was heading for Ballyhaunis where our rugby lads were due to play Corinthians in the final of the Curley Cup. I’m sure the story of the game is told elsewhere in the People, but after a very shaky start in which we conceded a try after only a couple of minutes, we put on a superb exhibition of running rugby and ran out very convincing winners. Many years ago when Ballyhaunis were a young club in their infancy, they played on a pitch near the Golf Club, which was pretty much on the side of a hill, with a slope on it that would nearly be good enough for an Olympic skiing competition. Fast-forward to the present day and their facilities are second to none, with two top class pitches, a huge clubhouse, incorporating dressing

rooms and a function room, and it just shows how a small club can progress and develop with good leadership and management. The Six Nations trophy was on show at the clubhouse, and we all had opportunities to have our photos taken with
it, before the presentation of our two trophies – the Curley Cup and the Junior League Cup – took place, and we headed back to a night of celebration and fun in the first ever Good Friday opening of Mikeen’s pub. Before I go from Ballyhaunis, full
Timid boxing showdown, exciting day in Croker Changing subjects entirely, but sticking with sport – of sorts – on Saturday night we had one of the most eagerly-awaited world heavyweight boxing title fights for a long time when Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker did battle for the right to hold four of the five different world championship belts. Now why there are so many different champions in every weight category beats me, and I think back to the time when there was only one world champion, and the likes of Ali and Jack Dempsey and Mike Tyson were undisputed kings of the heavyweight boxing world. Anyway, back to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, where on Saturday night 82,000 fans were present in a sold-out crowd. Along with millions around the world, they got a complete non-event. Scarcely a blow
was struck in anger, and any time it looked as if it might get physical the referee stepped in and separated the two fighters. In the end, Joshua won the four belts by a convincing margin, and in fairness to him he is a magnificent physical specimen, and with a 20 million pounds sterling pay day he had a pretty productive Easter Saturday night. He is going to fight Deontay Wilder for the one remaining belt he hasn’t got, some time in the near future. As for the millions who signed up to watch Saturday’s so-called fight on Sky TV, and who paid well for the privilege, I am nearly sorry for them, but I suppose you take your chances. Back in the days before knives and stabbing became commonplace in settling disagreements, we used to have many a pub fight take place,
and in truth I saw loads of better contests at the back of carnival marquees or outside the local pubs. Talking of contests, I didn’t get to see the Rossies’ wonderful win in a high-scoring game against Cavan, but fair play to them, while I saw a little bit of the Galway/Dublin match, but though the Tribesmen did reasonably well, I do believe they should have abandoned their defensive set-up and gone for the win after the Dubs were reduced to 14 men. However, the men in maroon showed enough to suggest their Connacht Championship match against Mayo in May could be one of the games of the year. The Rossies will definitely have another Connacht final to look forward to, and would be my (slight) favourites to retain their provincial crown.
credit to their ladies committee, as they served up bowls of steaming hot soup, which were very welcome on what was a perishing cold evening. This was backed up with a great array of sandwiches, and all free of charge. Never were such refreshments so badly needed, or so much appreciated, and the whole event was a credit to the club and its officers. Anyway, I elected myself to the highly prestigious position of bonfire organiser, and so I hit for the village before the bus left the Mayo town, and when the victorious team arrived we had the fires blazing to welcome our heroes home. The rest of the night was as good a bit of craic as we had in many a year, and I can only say it was brilliant to have two rugby trophies in Creggs after many a long barren year. I was lucky enough to be at most of the games that Creggs played during the year, and while there were times when their running game almost gave some of us old-timers heart attacks and seizures, I have to say they were a lovely team to watch, and played some super rugby, which was a credit to themselves and their management team. Next season they have another step up to take, but I’m sure we’ll worry about that later. For the moment, we will enjoy this year’s success – and all I can say is well done lads, it’s been a great journey.
And finally… Finally for this week, the end of a very successful year for Creggs on the rugby field saw the seconds go down in the League final on Sunday to a bigger, stronger Our Lady’s Boys Club team in Tuam, on what I think was the coldest day on which I have ever stood on the sideline of any pitch. The lads have had a very good innings, and I’m told the celebrations in Mikeen’s were every bit as good as if we had won the trophy. The big draw takes centre stage now, so I’m sure you’ll run into a ticket seller somewhere around the place in the next week or two, and if you do, try to support the club by buying a ticket. You could end up the winner of a prize Charolais cow, or any one of twenty-five other prizes. I’m told there may be a dinner dance in the offing later in the summer, to present our winners’ medals. I hope there is – it would be great craic and a great way to celebrate (again) the success of the season gone by.
Till next week, Bye for now!

Do I have my own opinions regarding the recent high profile ‘rape trial’ in Belfast, the alleged self-professed ‘top shaggers’ and their grotty locker room banter, and indeed, the overall outcome? Of course I do…but I’ll be keeping it to myself! However, I did read, listen and follow all news reports generated around the proceedings, and it wasn’t until after the verdict had been reached – (with, I stress, all four accused being found not guilty) – did I comment on social media, to say three things. One, we must accept the court’s verdict, and we do of course accept it; it was a difficult trial for all involved. Two, I wished to acknowledge the sheer courage and determination of the complainant and her family during the trial. And three, I wanted to encourage anyone who has been affected by sexual abuse/rape/ assault or who has been hurt in any way to make a report to the Gardaí today. You see, readers, given the massive publicity this trial generated, given the sordid, demoralising, dispiriting and highly offensive moments it provided; given the graphic front page headlines it spawned, given the fact that Crown Courtroom No. 12 appeared to have perversely become a tourist destination with voyeuristic day-trippers and supporters of the accused men, as a rape survivor I was troubled. I became fearful that, in the wake of everything that’s hap-
pened, there’s a significant possibility that victims, in particular women, will be too fearful to come forward, and this alarms me greatly. Let me make it clear to anyone who this week is reading this and feeling vulnerable and afraid, and who needs clarification around the reporting of a rape in the Republic of Ireland, that we handle things differently here. So please, please seek the Gardaí’s help or at least contact a support group. Here in Roscommon, (and indeed the Republic generally), our system provides for a better level of privacy, with neither the complainant’s nor
the accused’s identity being revealed. Remember this fact. However, I’ll make it clear that rates of conviction are pretty low, and, for various reasons surrounding my personal complaint, disappointingly my own attacker never saw the inside of a Dublin courtroom. This, readers, is because there lies a deep chasm between due process and what is the highly complex legal requirement for the prosecution to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that a complainant was raped. It’s a profound process, but it does not mean the complainant is not believed. In fact, the Gardaí dealing with me were
amazing; they were hugely supportive and they were behind me one hundred per cent all the way. To this day I’m so glad I reported him, I’m so glad I sent the Gardaí to his door and I’m so glad he was investigated. I hope to God my report deterred him from attacking or raping another woman. And, even as I still bear the physical and mental scars of that vicious attack, I’m a resilient aul wagon with, I have found, impressive bounceback ability and survival skills. Nobody had the guts to say ‘No, Taoiseach!’
Despite the fact that a review concerning the media campaign regarding Project Ireland 2040 has found there was no basis to allegations that the Government’s Strategic Communications Unit (SCU) had breached the Civil Service Code, blurring the lines between the use of taxpayers’ money around promoting and seeking favourable coverage for Fine Gael politicians in advertorials, and objective journalistic coverage, etc., it’s understood the ‘cost neutral’ (insert snigger here) controversial outfit will shut up shop by July. Now as someone who has, in the past, worked hard around creating, developing and (successfully I might add), delivering certain high profile public relations and
communications strategies at Ministerial level both here at home and in the EU, it’s my opinion that the whole humiliating, inglorious disgrace stank to high heaven. And why? Well, for the key reason (in my capacity as a former communications consultant), the unit itself did the one thing it should never, ever do…it became the story! As a taxpayer however, I viewed the operation as possibly a ruthless and crafty splurge of public money in order that style consultants could ensure politicians looked ‘photo fabulous’ in designer gear while shamelessly, audaciously and brazenly plastering on the poor mouth as they told us poor eejits that the country is pot-less. Effectively holding nothing in the reserves
to house the homeless, sort the trolley crisis and re-open Roscommon hospital’s A&E Department. The review, which was carried out by the highly competent Mr. Martin Fraser, found that ‘some of the public comments made about the SCU have been disproportionate, hurtful and offensive.’ Fair enough. Mind you, what I found offensive is the fact that not one advisor, spin-doctor or so-called guru had the guts to stand up to publicitylovin’ Leo and say, “Er no Taoiseach, no… reel in the smug supercilious head on ya there son. Irish history is littered with arrogant, idiotic Taoisigh…do you really want to be remembered as another one?” I know I’d have said it!

Dysart men launch 10th anniversary book DAN DOONER
The importance of the Dysart Rural Men’s Group was plain to see at the launch of the group’s book ‘Dysart Rural Men’s Group – Celebrating Ten Years’ at Dysart Community Centre. Group members, James Mooney and Denis Connolly, told the large turnout, which included local public representatives and other invited guests – including the men’s groups from Boyle and Drumboylan – about the positive effect the group has had on their lives. After being introduced by MC Gerry Fallon, Mr. Mooney, who has been part of the group for seven years, described how the group had even helped him as he overcame illness. “When I came to the group I wasn’t very well, I had a long illness. It’s boosted me…it was the one thing that stood to me and I made a great recovery for myself”. He also highlighted the important social element and the work of Roscommon LEADER Partnership coordinator, Noel Hoare, in inviting speakers to come and talk to the group at the community centre
each Tuesday. “It was very important for me to meet men, talk to men, converse with men. Every day Noel would have someone coming in. We had great craic and banter and we have people in the club from Galway and when Roscommon play Galway we have great craic! We’ve had talks from the Fire Brigade and the Gardaí and many, many more,” he said. James read Patrick Kavanagh’s poem ‘Thank You, Thank You’ but not before telling those present of a curious dream he recently had. “I was brought forward 200 years to 2217. I saw this young lad coming down steps and I didn’t know who he was. I said hi to him and he said ‘Hi’ and the minute he opened his mouth I knew he was American. “I said ‘Who are you?’ ‘I’m from Yale University’ he said, ‘I’m doing my thesis and It’s about rural Ireland’. ‘My great great grandfather came from Dysart.’ “I said ‘You’ve a book there in your hand’. He said: ‘That’s the book, the Dysart Rural Men’s Group book’. He pointed at a man on the book and said
‘That’s my great great grandfather, he was born in Dysart’. “I said ‘What’s his name? What’s his name?’ And then I got this elbow ‘Wake up! Wake up!’ It was my wife. ‘You’re having a horrible dream!’ “I said: ‘I’m not…I’m having a lovely dream and I never found out who it was, you woke me up!’” Fellow member Denis Connolly, a farmer and former publican, also paid tribute to coordinator Noel Hoare, who he described as a “gentleman, sincere, honest and upright”, for the work he has done in facilitating the men’s group in Dysart. NUIG academic, Dr. Phil Noone, who wrote the foreword for the book, said she was “honoured to be part of this amazing project” before describing the book as a “housing of memories”. “This book can travel…to wherever Irish people live and it will be held with great pride and read with a great sense of connection to the homeland. So you have done an amazing job gentlemen and I’m only proud to be part of it,” she said. Cathaoirleach of Roscom-
mon County Council, Cllr. Orla Leyden, officially launched the book which she described as “a treasure” before pausing to remember former group member, Thomas Gilligan, who had recently passed away as well as local man Brian Finneran, whose mother Lily is part of the Dysart Community Centre kitchen staff who were honoured on the night. Coordinator Noel Hoare, who was widely praised for his work with the group on the night, offered heartfelt thanks to the group’s supporters, including Roscommon County Council, LEADER, GRETB, as well as the HSE and sponsors.

“To me, what makes it a success is an awful lot of people working together….when I say that I’m on about the men themselves especially and the local committee that we have”. Anthony Dockery of Roscommon LEADER Partnership encouraged support for the group before highlighting its main aims. “In three or four words…the purpose of the establishment of the men’s group is to provide a social outlet for rural men. It’s for no other reason. It’s not a curing project, it’s a prevention project. It replaces what was lost in rural communities – the rambling house”.
Mr. Dockery added that the group had provided the men with mental and physical wellbeing as well as a platform for information. He added that “pound for pound the greatest of all” benefit was the group’s contribution to “independent living for longer”. ‘Dysart Rural Men’s Group – Celebrating Ten Years’ is available to buy from Maureen’s Shop, Ballyforan; Dysart Stores; Menton’s Post Office, Curraghboy; Tavanagh Meats, Brideswell and Centra, Athleague, at a cost of €15. Living our lives without you, is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, your heart was kind and true. And when we needed someone, we could always count on you. MONTH’S MIND CAHILL Anthony
SHERLOCK Patrick (Pat)
Brackloon, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon
Walk Road, Roscommon Town
Who died on 27th February 2018. Josie, Anne Marie, Tish and Breda, together with our families, wish to express our heartfelt gratitude for the support and kindness shown to us on our great loss and deep sadness at Anthony’s passing. A special word of thanks to the dedicated hard-working doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, multi-task attendants, porters, clerical staff and to Sr. Gabriel at Roscommon University Hospital for their exceptional quality of care and kindness. In particular we wish to thank Geraldine Keane, Palliative Care team who was an immense support providing comfort and dignity to Anthony during his last days and who was also a huge support to us. The Family Room was also an invaluable resource to us at that difficult time. We are also grateful to Dr. Greg Kelly, Dr. Michael Henry and all the staff at the Kelly Henry Medical Centre and Tully’s Pharmacy for looking after Anthony throughout the years. A special thanks to Fr. Donnelly, Fr. Kelly, Fr. Beirne and Fr. Fitzgerald for their prayers and many visits in hospital and at home. Thank you to Fr. Donnelly, Fr. Kelly and Fr. Gannon for concelebrating Anthony’s Funeral Mass. We are indebted to our very special neighbours, friends and family who unconditionally supported and comforted us, cooked and provided food and refreshments, took care of our grandchildren, brought flowers and kept vigil at Anthony’s side. Thank you to everyone who travelled from overseas and long and short distances especially in the snow and to Roscommon County Council for keeping roads gritted. We particularly want to thank the gravediggers who prepared Anthony’s final resting place so beautifully in a bed of heather, especially in the inclement weather conditions. A special word of thanks to Carmel McLoughlin for her beautiful singing and to Sr. Elizabeth for her guidance in preparing the prayers, the altar servers and readers and to McDonagh’s Funeral Directors for their professional manner and personal touches. To the Garda Síochána and the stewards for organising traffic and to Kevin Higgins and staff at The Winning Post for providing food on the day. To everyone who lit candles, sent Mass Cards, letters of sympathy, phone calls, text messages and gave donations to Roscommon Palliative Care Services, we are deeply grateful, you all mean so much to us. The Holy Mass is being offered for your intentions. Anthony’s Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Ballinagare on Saturday, 7th April at 12 noon.
We the family, of the late Pat Sherlock wish to thank all who sympathised with us on our recent bereavement. Thanks to everyone who called to the house, attended the Removal and Funeral Mass, those who sent floral tributes, cards and messages and to those who travelled long distances to be with us. Thanks to Fr. Fitzgerald for a lovely Mass and thanks for the lovely singing also provided by Michael Treacy and his companions. Thank you also to Paddy Joe Burke a great friend of Pat who said a lovely speech about him. Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Portiuncula Hospital who gave Pat such great care in the final few days of his journey through life. Our sincere appreciation to Pat Smyth for the dignified and professional manner in which he carried out the Funeral arrangements and to the grave diggers for preparing Pat’s final resting place. Special thanks to Eamon, Mary and staff of Gleeson’s for the beautiful meal provided after the Funeral. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions. Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon on Sunday, 8th April at 10.30am.

BREAKING BALL
Ladies lose to Lilywhites Roscommon Ladies footballers missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the Lidl Ladies NFL Division 3 when they were defeated 2-11 to 2-7 by Kildare in a competitive match played at Dr Hyde Park last Saturday. Despite a good showing from Michael Finneran’s side, Kildare were the deserved winners in the end. Roscommon grabbed an early goal from Alice Kelly and the sides traded point for point after that. But the Lilywhites upped the ante in the second quarter. Goals from Grace Clifford and Ellen Dowling turned the game on its head. But a fine goal from Rachel Fitzmaurice kept the home side in touch and at half-time Kildare led by 2-7 to 2-3. Roscommon battled away but Kildare found scoring easier to come by with Roscommon missing some good chances. Goalkeeper Helena Cummins played her part making a few very good saves to keep her side in the game. But despite a super effort Roscommon never looked like winning the match. Roscommon: H Cummins; H Ennis, R Mullanney, R Brady; N Feeney, A McLoone, R Wynne (0-1); S Kenny, L Fleming (0-2); A Kelly (1-0), J Downey (0-4), R Fitzmaurice (1-0); S Brady, R Finan, J Cregg. Subs: S Farrell for Brady, L Brady for Downey, J Downey for Fitzmaurice, N Fleming for Wynne.
Rossies book semi-final spot Roscommon qualified for the Littlewoods Camogie League Division 3 Semi-Final following an entertaining draw with Kerry in Abbeydorney on Easter Sunday, with both sides finishing on 0-7 apiece. Susan Spillane was Roscommon’s top scorer on the day with 0-3 while Niamh Farrell (0-2), Niamh Coyle (0-1) and Rachel Fitzmaurice were also on the scoreboard. Roscommon will now face Tyrone in the league semi-final this Sunday at a venue yet to be decided.
Mixed Championship fortunes! There were mixed results for Roscommon’s underage teams in Connacht Championship action last weekend. The Roscommon Ladies U-16 team were 6-12 to 3-8

With no racing in Ireland today or tomorrow this weekend starts with flat racing on the all-weather at Dundalk at 6 pm. On Saturday, jump racing takes place at Limerick, off at 1.45 pm and on the flat at Navan first away at 2.10 pm. On Sunday, it’s off to the punter’s graveyard, Naas in Co. Kildare for a flat card featuring two Group 3 races, the Gladness and the Alleged Stakes, first race 2.10 pm. Last year’s Classic hero Capri, Irish Derby and Doncaster St. Leger, may make his reappearance in the Alleged Stakes at Naas on Sunday. Aidan O’Brien also has Derby second Cliffs Of Moher, Yucatan and Clear Skies entered. Ralph Beckett’s Air Pilot is the only cross channel raider entered. There are 10 horses left in the race. With the loss of Fairyhouse, Leopardstown and Wexford if you are going racing this weekend make sure racing is on before leaving home.

Fairyhouse Report On Sunday, in the featured Ryanair Gold Cup, neither of the Cheltenham winners prevailed but Shattered Love finished 2nd to Cheltenham faller Al Boum Photo with Invitation Only, pulled up at Prestbury Park, 3rd, and the distances were 1l and 7l. Mullins trained 1st and 3rd with the runner-up trained by Elliott.

Youngsters lose to Carlow Carlow proved too strong for Roscommon in last Saturday’s All-Ireland
In the other Grade 1 on the card, the EBF Mares Novice Hurdle, Laurina overcame the Cheltenham winning easily by 8 ½ l and 3 ¾ l from Lackaneen Leader and Alletrix giving Mullins and Townend a big race double. In the Grade B Novice Chase Noel Meade’s Bel Ami De Sivola took it up approaching the final fence and stayed on to beat Bon Papa and Crosshue Boy 1½l and ½l. Meade completed a double when outsider Pat’s Pick won the bumper under Nina Carberry. Elliott won the Grade 2 Novice hurdle when Pallasator won by 2½l and 8l from Jetz and Scarpeta. On Monday, in atrocious conditions, only 8 of the 30 starters finished in the Irish Grand National victory going to 20/1 outsider General Principle giving Elliott his first win in the race under JJ Slevin for Gigginstown. Mullins was 2nd with Isleofhopendreams and Edward Cawley’s Forever Gold finished 3rd. The unlucky horse in the race was Falsom Blue, promoted to 4th, after being almost brought to a stop by Bellshill, placed 5th, approaching the last. After winning the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse the Declan Lavery ridden Portnablagh won the bumper in Cork for Gordon Elliott bringing his score for the season to 200, the first to train 200 in a national hunt season. Getaway John made it 201 under Jamie Codd in the bumper at Fairyhouse. It came as no surprise when Tuesday’s

card was cancelled after an 8 am inspection and there are no arrangements announced yet to refix it.
Grand National News Gordon Elliott hopes to have a threepronged attack in his bid to complete a Grand National double on Saturday week at Aintree. The well backed Cheltenham winner Tiger Roll with Davy Russell booked heads the challenge and will be joined by Ucello Conti and Bless The Wings. The horse is co-fav with the WP Mullins trained Total Recall and Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Blaklion at 10/1. Elliott was the youngest trainer to win the great race back in 2007 with Silver Birch before he had even trained a winner at home on the track in Ireland. Trainer Paul Nicholls has ruled As De Mee out of the 4¼ mile feature with a leg injury. The horse, who finished 5th in the Topham last year, was being aimed at this year’s race. All going well he should be back in training by end of year and will now be aimed at next year’s race.

Minor Camogie Championship match at Knockcroghery, running out 1-13 to 0-4 winners. Roscommon face Meath and Down this weekend in a big to reach the Shield Final.
The Tote have agreed to sponsor the Galway Plate for a further 3 years until 2020. The news follows the decision to move the fixture to an evening slot, with the first race off at 5.10 pm and the big race due to go to post at 7.20 pm. The Tote first sponsored the race in 2010 and the president Michael
D. Higgins is once again expected to make the presentation to winning connections.
Point to Point View Racing this weekend has been badly hit by the weather with Saturday’s meeting in the north at Loughbrickland cancelled. On Sunday, with Kilmallock and Courtown also gone, there are just three meetings down for decision, all in the south, at Dromahane in Cork at 1.30 pm, at Bellurgan Park in Co. Louth and at Athlacca near Rathcannon in Co. Limerick replacing Kilmallock and both meetings start at 2.30 pm. Courtown has been rescheduled for Saturday, 21st April.
Competition Time Hard to believe we are back with our competitions and first up Kilbeggan is on the 20th of this month. We have three pairs of tickets for the first meeting of the season on this track compliments of Secretary Paddy Dunican. To win can you tell us in which county is Kilbeggan racecourse located? Answers please on a postcard to The Roscommon People, Abbey Street, Roscommon Town or by e-mail to tomred17@gmail.com by 12 pm on Wednesday, April 18th and don’t forget to include your name, address and a contact phone number with all competition entries. Tickets will have to be collected in the office in Abbey Street on Thursday or Friday.

Creggs RFC Report
THE GAIN LINE
Creggs win Curley Cup in style Senior Rugby Curley Cup Final: Creggs 47 Corinthians 5. Creggs eventually ran out easy winners in an entertaining Cup final played in perfect conditions at Ballyhaunis on Friday night. Corinthians started in whirlwind fashion and scored a fine try after just three minutes. They continued to dominate the opening quarter and only stout defence prevented further scores as their high-tempo game clearly unsettled Creggs. Gradually the Creggs pack became more influential and an Andrew Callaghan try levelled the scores at 5-5 after 24 minutes. Two Mark Brandon penalties stretched Creggs’ lead to 11-5 by half-time. Winger Chris Duignan produced a moment of magic with a superb interception shortly after halftime and he romped home from halfway to touch down under the posts. Alan Brandon added two tries, one of which was a superb solo effort, while Eoghan Coyle and
Elliot Jennings also scored tries to put Creggs out of sight. The final try was one of the highlights of the game with prop forward Eoghan Farrell showing his power and pace to cut through for a fine score in the closing minutes of a highly entertaining contest. This game brought the season to an end in style for a Creggs side which has now captured two trophies in the last month as well as winning promotion to J1A League for next season. Great credit is due to the players and their management team and their success is richly deserved. Division 2 League Final: Our Lady’s Boys Club 25 Creggs Seconds 7. OLBC captured the Junior 2 League title with an impressive win over Creggs in Sunday’s Final, which was played in Tuam. OLBC began impressively and an early try by Johnny Long, which Dave Prior converted, set them on the road to victory. Creggs responded with sustained pressure which yielded a couple of penalty chances but kicking con-
ditions were difficult and both attempts were off target. The scoreline remained at 7-0 to OLBC until the 50th minute when Dave Prior kicked a penalty and he added another penalty shortly afterwards after Creggs strayed offside in midfield. Creggs continued to carry the fight to OLBC but could not break through their superb defence. A Dave Reilly try in the 68th minute finally put the game out of Creggs’ reach and Colm Flynn added a further try which Dave Prior converted. However, Creggs battled to the end and winger Luke Meehan crashed through for a late try which was converted by Michael Farrell to complete the scoring. Both teams have gained promotion to J1C League for next season and OLBC are worthy champions with a strong set of forwards allied to a slick and inventive backline. Buccs’ Women final woe
Buccaneers advanced to the final of the Connacht U18.5s Cup following a thrilling win over Westport on the main pitch at Dubarry Park on Sunday. The scoreline of 43-3 would suggest a comprehensive win for the hosts, but Westport were seriously in the game at half-time, and a sustained effort from Buccaneers was required to pull away and win comfortably in the end.
There was no joy for Buccaneers as NUI Galway completed a League and Cup double when they proved much too strong for the Athlonians in the Connacht Women’s Cup final played at a typically windy Galway Sportsground on Sunday with the Students triumphing 39-0. College got off to a flying start and, despite the best efforts of Buccs, the outcome was rarely in doubt thereafter.

SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER
@dan_dooner
Brighter spring ahead of a longer summer? THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner This time last year Roscommon had beaten Cavan in the league ahead of the Connacht Championship, albeit in much less hopeful circumstances. A year is a long time in football, however, and while the Rossies were almost completely written off in 2017 following a Division One campaign which was itself a write-off, this year has a much brighter outlook already. There’s an assurance about this Roscommon team in possession and last Sunday’s score of 4-16 was in keeping with the attacking threat they have carried so far this year. Throw in the development of Ciarán Lennon and the return of Cathal Cregg and it’s not just rapid forward play that has caused opposing backlines huge
problems since the turn of the year. The panel as a whole is now much stronger with the return of experienced players as well as the continued development of those who won Connacht medals last year. Nowadays when teams are named on Thursday nights, supporters can take great comfort in not only 1 to 15 but also those held in reserve. Suddenly a whole new dimension of possibilities jumps out from the pages of match day programmes. There has been an emergence of leaders right through the panel too. Some players don’t need an armband or title to be captains in their own right. At various points this season players have popped up with crucial contribu-
tions at both ends of the field. That being said, Conor Devaney has proven to be an excellent choice as Kevin McStay’s Lieutenant on the pitch. The Man of the Match last Sunday seemed quite at home addressing Croke Park from the Hogan Stand too! While the spring has seemed brighter, football wise at least, there was a dark warning issued from just across the border last Sunday. If Roscommon remain vulnerable to direct attacking play, Galway certainly seem to have the personnel and game plan to wreck any hopes of retaining the Connacht crown won spectacularly in Salthill. Although the improving Tribesmen must first face a Mayo side which seems to bloom later in summer these days. For now though the Primrose and Blue can enjoy yet another final triumph while Kevin McStay’s post-match comments would suggest we ain’t seen nothing yet!

Top class golfing action tees off in both Augusta and Knockadoobrusna today. Tiger and Co. will be hoping to land the green jacket while the men of Boyle Golf Club will settle for landing on the green. The men’s weekly Thursday competitions are back! Meanwhile, this Sunday will see the first of a new series of sponsored competitions in Boyle with the GolfStyle sponsored 18-hole stroke the first to tee off. In Castlerea, Anto McCormack won the recent men’s competition with 40 points while Celia Mulligan was best of the ladies on 34 points. Tonight sees the Get Into Golf event taking place at the clubhouse, for more information contact Paul (0873515991), Mamie (087-7857285) or Dympna (086-0682109). To Roscommon, where the Junior Captain’s Drive-In took place last Saturday with two excellent drives from girls’ captain Niamh Lennon and boys’ captain Simon Walker. Alan Connaughton, Olivia Costello and Luke Golden won the scramble which followed. The recent ladies’ 18-hole competi-
tion was won by Margaret Egan with 32 points while the Thursday seniors was won by Margaret Brennan. On Sunday, the Roscommon People sponsored 18-hole singles was won by John McHale (42 points) with Colm O’Reilly (42) finished second and Paul Hoare (39) was third. Simon Walker (35) had the best gross while Michael Corcoran was the best of the juniors. The Hannon’s Hotel Scramble was won by Olivia Costello, Ciara Ryan and Des Dowd and Michael Dolan and Ollie Dempsey claimed the Roscommon Fireplaces Men’s Winter League.
Darts
Final countdown! All roads lead to Hannon’s Hotel this Saturday for the Roscommon Darts League Cup and Shield Finals following thrilling semi-final second legs last weekend. Molly’s stormed to a 5-2 second leg win at The Holly Tree to take their tie 10-6 on aggregate. They will meet An Bothar Rua in Saturday’s Cup final after the Elphin outfit defeated The Forge 4-0 in their second leg to take a 10-3 aggregate win last Friday. In the Shield, McDermott’s 10-3 aggregate win over Flanagan’s means
they will face The Hollywood in this Saturday’s final. McDermott’s were comfortable 4-0 winners in their second leg while The Hollywood’s 4-4 draw with Creaton’s was enough to seal their passage. Saturday’s Shield Final will take place at 5 pm while the Cup Final gets underway at 7 pm. Elsewhere, David Concannon took little time returning to winning ways when he won the Martin Kelly Cup in the Hollywood Bar last Sunday. Concannon took no prisoners as he came through a field of 23 players, taking the highest checkout in the process (116). He accounted for Brendan Harrington (4-0) in the quarter-finals, Mick Egan (5-0) in the semi-finals and Ciaran Hickey (6-0) in the final. Clinical.

Seamus Duke ON SPORT
Two great games at cold Croker On what was the coldest day that I have ever experienced in Croke Park, there were two great games to see for the 36,000 people who turned up. The Roscommon and Cavan game is well documented elsewhere here this week but the Galway v Dubin match in the Division One final was a thriller. Galway have developed a very good side and their system is very hard to play against but you have to credit the Dubs, they found a way to win it in the end as they always do. Galway were not helped by a poor refereeing display from Anthony Nolan who should have given two black cards to Dublin players
in the first ten minutes and the Dubs also got two very soft frees in the second half which were both converted by Dean Rock. Having said all that, Dublin were slightly the better team on the day but last Sunday’s performance from Galway shows that they are not unbeatable. It will have given a boost to a few other teams who will hope to be challenging later in the year in the championship. In the hurling it’s Kilkenny and Tipperary in the league final again. Those people who had written off Kilkenny were badly mistaken and they will give Tipperary plenty to think about on Sunday next.
Don’t rule out a Kilkenny win. They were awesome against Wexford last Sunday.

City to clinch title this weekend?
5 things we learned from 2018 NFL Roscommon’s lethal attack Roscommon forwards are now among the best in the game. They put up some huge totals in the league this year and added another 4-16 last Sunday. To be able to call on players of the quality of Cathal Cregg, Enda Smith, Fintan Cregg and Shane Killoran off the bench is an indication that Roscommon’s strength in depth up front is impressive by any standard. The form of Niall Kilroy, Conor Devaney, the Murtaghs and Donie Smith has been outstanding and Ciarán Lennon is developing as a top class target man all the time.
Defensive woes There have been some good displays but any team who succeeded in running straight at the Roscommon defence at pace found that there were gaps. In the championship good teams are at full fitness and always have pace. It’s something that Kevin McStay and his management team will have to sort out.
Roscommon panel strength The last time Roscommon were in Division One the lack of strength depth caught them out and the huge effort they put in to do well in the league meant that the team was burnt out when it came to the championship. Now there are up to 30 players who are capable of pulling on the county jersey at senior level and that will be needed if Roscommon want to stay in the top division and be competitive in the championship.
Connacht football is strong When was the last time that three Connacht teams were in Division One of the league? Football in the province is going through a really good spell. Mayo showed that they are still a force to be reckoned with as they survived in Division One once more. There is a renewed fire in Galway’s belly. The way they put it up to Dublin last Sunday in the Division One final will give them great hope and belief. The forthcoming Connacht championship will be one of the most hard fought in many years. The Galway v Mayo game on May 13th will be a thunderous affair.
‘The Blanket’ is gone There are some teams who are still playing defensive football but it has been proven not to work, especially in Croke Park. Dublin found a way to win against Galway last Sunday and in all four finals last weekend there were high scores and great entertainment. The game is evolving. Thankfully.
Andrew Conway celebrates his wonder try against Toulon last weekend.
Conway’s try one of the great moments I don’t think I have ever seen a more exciting game of rugby than the Munster v Toulon game last Saturday at Thomond Park. It was edge of the seat stuff from start to finish. Andrew Conway’s try will go down in history as one of the really great moments of Irish sport. Seamus Darby’s goal, Joe
Canning’s point from the sideline, Katie Taylor’s win in London, Ray Houghton’s goal against England. Conway’s try is up there with all those great moments. Munster were lucky to win the game though and if it was played anywhere other than Thomond Park it would have been a different
result but you must ride your luck in these competitions and now Munster are in the semi-final. There is the possibility of an all Irish final now and what a prospect that would be. Leinster are looking good but I have a feeling Munster will be up against it against Racing.
Dramatic Masters weekend ahead This week will see the most eagerly awaited US Masters in many decades as the elite field battle it out for the first major of the year. There are so many sub-plots this year that Agatha Christie would be very proud. Tiger Woods is back and has a chance of winning, Rory McIlroy is also in good form. Justin Thomas is the choice of many to win his first major. Jordan Spieth is going well and Justin Rose is not far away. Dustin Johnson has yet to fire this season but is a brilliant player and Bubba Watson, a two-time winner here in recent seasons, is back in form again. Can Phil Mickelson win and become the oldest major winner of all time at 47? That is just one of the questions that will be answered this week at Augusta National. There is something so special about the Masters and the back 9 holes on Sunday is where it is all decided. I have a few bob on Tiger at huge odds and it would
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson continue preparations ahead of the US Masters.
be the greatest sporting comeback off all time if he were to win it. I am really looking forward to it.
It is likely that the Premier League title will be decided at The Etihad Stadium this Saturday evening when Manchester City host rivals Manchester United. I have a feeling that we will see at least one if not two Manchester United buses parked in front of the goal to stop that happening. Mourinho has a massive ego and he will do whatever he can to stop City winning the title against United. He may not be able to do it though. City are several levels above any other team in the league and if they don’t win it this week they will win it next week. Liverpool and Manchester United are playing for second place. Mohamed Salah won the game for Livepool last weekend again and although he is having a mighty season, every goal he scores brings a move to Barcelona, Real Madrid or PSG a little closer. I think most Liverpool fans know that too.
Best of luck to St. Nathy’s! Good luck to St. Nathy’s in their bid for glory this weekend in the All-Ireland Colleges ‘B’ Football Final in Croke Park. They are back in business and will try to emulate the great teams from the school in the past who have tasted All-Ireland success. I have heard absolutely nothing about their opposition Cookstown but I presume that they are a good side and I note that Peter Canavan is in their backroom team. Good luck to everyone concerned.

Allianz NFL Division 2 Final: Roscommon 4-16 Cavan 4-12
Rossies beat Breffni in thriller! will be hard team to pick when the championship comes around. It’s a nice problem to have. After a slow start this was a fantastic way to end the league campaign. It is always good to win a trophy in Croke Park and the memory of that 22-point drubbing at the hands of Mayo last August is now well and truly banished. I will pick out two pieces of play from the game last Sunday that would thrill even the most cynical of fans and will live long in the memory. The first was a 60-metre pass from Donie Smith to Brian Stack, which led directly to Roscommon’s second goal. The second was Diarmuid Murtagh’s pass into the path of Cathal Cregg for Roscommon’s third goal. Cregg never had to break stride and the pass took the defender completely out of the play. It was football of the highest order and Roscommon are capable of that now. Kevin McStray and his selectors have a lot of work to do with regard to the defence but if they can find a way to shut the back door, a very interesting summer lies ahead. For the moment though let’s enjoy this one. Well done lads!
The Verdict Seamus Duke If Carlsberg did endings to the league it would look something like this! This was a quite incredible Division 2 final played at bitterly cold Croke Park last Sunday. As we have seen in this league campaign, Roscommon played some exhilarating and breathtaking attacking football and they mixed that with some alarming defensive lapses here again. But it was still good enough to maintain the great record that the Primrose and Blue have against Cavan in recent years. Regardless of what Cavan threw at Roscommon they were able to respond, and it made for an enthralling spectacle. On a day that would have made Siberians feel at home, there was no sign of a defensive blanket anywhere around Croke Park as the two teams went at each other hammer and tongs from the first whistle. It was like a hurling score as the sides produced 8 goals and 28 points and enough thrills and spills that would do justice to an Indiana Jones movie. It was hard to make sense of it all. Roscommon had conceded two goals by the 8th minute. They then proceeded to kick eight super points without reply to wrest the

initiative from Cavan. They were rocked back on their heels in the 25th minute with another Cavan

goal but undaunted, they went on to lead at half-time. In fact Cavan scored only one point from play in that first half and that came from their full-back Pádraig Faulkner! Roscommon had played some marvellous attacking football in that first period yet when they went in for the cup of tea at the break they were only a solitary point ahead. It was that kind of game. Two fine goals within a two and a half minute spell early in the second half from Niall Kilroy and David Murray looked to have seen the Rossies pull away, but not a bit of it! Needless to say Cavan were back in the game after Enda Flanagan poked home a half-volley with almost 20 minutes left for their fourth goal. But Roscommon’s strength off the bench was a match-winner once again. Cathal Cregg struck two opportunist goals in the final ten minutes to finally put the game to bed. It was a match to warm the heart on such a cold day. Before anyone gets carried away with the championship around the corner, Roscommon were once again under pressure when Cavan ran straight at the defence, and in the championship against strong teams Roscommon will be
punished if that trait continues. Ultan Harney and David Murray were the pick of a rearguard that was under pressure all the way through. Cavan captain Dara McVeety gave the Roscommon defence endless problems with his direct running until he went off injured. Cathal Compton did well at midfield and he continues to improve but we need a settled combination in that sector for the big tests ahead. Up front there were some marvellous performances. Conor Devaney was tremendous once again. He is the human equivalent of the Duracell Bunny. He is here, there and everywhere. An inspirational captain for sure. Donie Smith and Ciarán Lennon were superb in the first half and while both men faded out of it a little in the second period, they played a huge part in this victory. Niall Kilroy was also very effective again and we saw flashes of brilliance from Diarmuid Murtagh. The impact that the replacements made off the bench was tremendous once again. The subs scored a total of 2-5 and that speaks for itself. It was good to see Niall McInerney back, and Cathal Cregg and Enda Smith were superb. It

Key Moments First half rd
In Cavan’s first attack in the 3 minute, Conor Bradley scooted through the Roscommon defence and blasted the ball past James Featherston. Conor Devaney’s point opened the scoring for Roscommon a minute later and Caoimhin O’Reilly matched that with a converted free after 6 minutes. In the 8th minute Cavan had the ball in the back of the Roscommon net again. Dara McVeety was fouled by Conor Daly and Martin Reilly found the bottom corner with the resultant spot-kick. Roscommon took over after that and kicked eight points in a row with some really classy efforts too, by the 24th minute. Conor Devaney (2), Donie Smith, Diarmuid Murtagh 4 (2 frees) and Ciaráin Murtagh (free) were all on target. In the 25th minute Cavan breached the Roscommon defence once again when Dara McVeety drove straight down the middle and fired home. But Roscommon responded in typical fashion when Donie Smith kicked two mighty points and Niall Kilroy another. Pádraig Faulkner kicked Cavan’s only point from play in the opening half in injury-time to leave just a point in it at the break. Half-time: Roscommon 0-12 Cavan 3-2.
Second half Three points from Cavan on the restart to just one from Roscommon (from sub Niall McInerney) saw the Breffni lead by a point, 3-5 to 0-13 after 42 minutes.
Seamus Duke Roscommon then struck two fine goals in a two and a half minute period. In the 43rd minute a super team move involving Brian Stack and Conor Devaney saw Niall Kilroy fist the ball home, and then in the 45th minute a laser-like 60 metre pass from Donie Smith into the arms of Brian Stack saw Davy Murray burst through and he shot just inside the post under pressure. Roscommon were now six points up 2-14 to 3-5. But in the nature of this crazy game Cavan scored the next 1-3 to level the game by the 59th minute. The goal came in the 51st minute when Gearoid McKiernan attempted a point, the ball dropped short but was knocked down by Adran Cole and Enda Flanagan was following up to poke the ball to the net on the half-volley. But Roscommon finally kicked for home in the final 10 minutes. In the 61st minute Diarmuid Murtagh played a pass to sub Cathal Cregg that Lionel Messi would be proud of and the Western Gaels man did the rest with a super finish. Cavan sub Seanie Johnson scored a great point but Cregg struck again in the 64th minute when Conor Devaney’s goalbound effort was well saved by Raymond Galligan, but Cregg was following up to shoot home. Cavan did score three more points before the finish but Roscommon had finally done enough and a fisted point from Ian Kilbride (another sub) and an injury-time point from Cregg saw the Rossies home by four after a truly incredible game of football. Full-time: Roscommon 4-16 Cavan 4-12.
TIME ADDED ON… “The loss of Dara McVeety was a huge turning point but you can’t concede four goals and win a major game. Every time we made a mistake Roscommon punished us. It’s something we have to look at” – Mattie McGleenan, Cavan Manager “I am so happy for the lads. We could have walked away from that game a few times because I thought we were beaten but we showed great fighting spirit. But overall it’s a very happy dressing room. They will have their league party tonight so they will be in good form for that” – Kevin McStay “The one thing I have learned today is that you can’t do defensive set-ups in
Croke Park, you have to go at the game. That’s a huge learning curve for us today and there were many plusses for us” – Mattie McGleenan “We made a mistake today as a management team. We didn’t use Niall (Kilroy) as a sweeper in the opening quarter and we paid a heavy price for it. We had to revert to the sweeper after that but these things happen” -– Kevin McStay “We set out to play loose today and to take the game to Cavan and have a cut and we probably made a mistake, but we got out of it with a win thankfully. But all credit to the players. Some of our score-taking was super and we were unselfish too. The best man was
getting the ball all the time and our finishing was way ahead of earlier in the campaign. We had threatened to put up a score like that all year and Cathal Cregg made a huge impact when he came on. It was nice to win here after what happened against Mayo last year but we move on now” – Kevin McStay “We are promoted and we have the cup as well. The league is over now and we are in Division One as we hoped to be but no one is getting carried away by the type of game you saw out there today. It is good that we don’t show our hand too much at this time of the year” – Kevin McStay, Roscommon manager

It’s a unique pairing as St. Nathy’s square off against Holy Trinity Cookstown in the All-Ireland ‘B’ final on Saturday in Croke Park. Form lines are very hard to work out when previewing this match but both sides have had very tight battles to get to the final. Nathy’s will certainly know how to get out of a tight corner if that situation presents itself on Saturday. In the Connacht final they looked out of it against Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown but they managed to tie up the scores and Jason Doory saw them over the line with a late goal in extra-time. Then when Lucan CBS looked to have had the upper hand in the AllIreland semi-final, Luke Hester struck another late winning goal for Nathy’s. Composure under pressure is a major plus in any team game and Nathy’s certainly have it in spades. Former coach and Nathy’s legend John O’Mahony is a huge admirer of the Nathy’s team and work ethic and the fact that there are no superstars on the team and that’s always a good way to be going into any final. Kuba Callaghan, James O’Hara, David McBrien, Brian O’Hanlon, Brian Molloy, Sean O’Hara and Kane Phillips have all been prominent this year and Luke Connor, Oisin
Phillips, Matthew Coyle, and the returning Oran Hester will be expected to put in the hard yards as they have been doing all year. They will also have to ensure that scoring chances are availed of when they come up. It’s an impressive looking line-up for the Ballaghaderreen side and the deployment of Kane Phillips as a sweeper could have a crucial bearing on the result. Cookstown are a very
impressive outfit going forward. Looking at their sensational win against Kenmare in the semi-final when they came back from ten points down to win by nine and scored 4-11 into the bargain, Nathy’s will need to be vigilant at the back as Holy Trinity have some really good forwards. Eoin Gallagher and Padraig Lagan are a very strong midfield partnership and Tiernan Quinn who

usually plays on the ’40 is an excellent performer while Tiernan Mackle is also scoring well for the Tyrone outfit this year and Oran Mulgrew and Sean McKenna also look very good attackers. But the game of Gaelic football is much more than attacking play and heart. A will to win, good organisation and a high work ethic are required if a team is to aspire to win a title and St. Nathy’s have all those
qualities in abundance. Luck will also play its part as it always does in a big final. The team management of Fr Paul Kivlehan, Ronan Brett and Colm Maye have done a great job with this Nathy’s team and hopefully there is one more big performance in them. The oldest cliché in the Gaelic football books is “on the day” and hopefully that day will belong to St. Nathy’s on Saturday.

O’Mahony hoping for more Nathy’s history SEAMUS DUKE
One man who will be forever linked with the modern Gaelic football history of St. Nathy’s College is John O’Mahony. The Ballaghaderreen native, who went on to fame as the manager of Mayo, Galway, Leitrim and of several successful club teams over the past three decades, will be there on Saturday to cheer on his old alma mater where he was a pupil and then taught for many years. In the year 2000 he was the team manager as Nathy’s won the AllIreland ‘B’ title beating St. Augustine’s of Dungarvan in the final. It was a memorable title win as there were several notable battles throughout that campaign and I remember vividly an epic Connacht final played at Dr Hyde Park when Nathy’s came from the dead to secure a narrow win against Garbally after extra-time. John spoke to me earlier this week and he is thrilled that Nathy’s are back challenging for titles. “It’s great to see Nathy’s back at the top table and it’s a tribute to the great work going on at under-
age level at clubs like Ballaghaderreen, Eastern Harps, Charlestown, Éire Óg and Western Gaels. “I like the look of this year’s team. There are no superstars as such and they play as a team. I was very impressed the way they dug out wins in the Connacht final against Strokestown and in the semi-final against Lucan CBS and it reminds me of the battles that we had when we won in 2000,” he said. “There was always a marvellous tradition of Gaelic football in St. Nathy’s and they won the Hogan Cup (the ‘A’ title) in 1957 and they were beaten in the final in 1959. But the year we won the ‘B’ title in 2000 we had some great players involved. Andy Moran was probably the best known but we had Eamon Towey and Derek Moran from Roscommon and the team was captained by an Éire Óg man, Keith Mahon. “That year we never won any game by more than three points so the team were well used to getting out of tight corners which is a good trait to have. It stood to us that year and I see that in this year’s team too.
“When we held the medal presentation for that team in 2000 we invited Dermot Earley (Snr), who of course was a past pupil of the school, and I always remember him saying the reason why he went to St. Nathy’s was because of their tradition in Gaelic football. He gave a speech at that presentation that those who
were there are still talking about today. He was a real inspiration”. Looking ahead to Saturday’s game, John is very confident that the team of 2018 can deliver. “I was at the Connacht final when they beat Strokestown and that was a great win under pressure and they dug out another great win in the semi-final
will be a big day for underage football in Connacht. I wish both sides the very best of luck,” he concluded.

Speaking after their exciting win in the semi-final Canavan pointed to the character of his side. “We had to play an Ulster final and All-Ireland semi-final within five days but the players were very impressive and now we are really looking forward to the final. Tiernan Quinn’s goal was crucial (against Kenmare) and Conor Donnelly was outstanding too,” he said Tyrone schools have a good recent record at colleges level and in Cookstown they are confident that they can go one step further and win the Paddy Drummond Cup in Croke Park on Saturday.

The Opposition: Holy Trinity Cookstown St. Nathy’s will face Holy Trinity College from Cookstown in Saturday’s final. The Tyrone school was formed in 1961 and is an all-boys school with 800 pupils. Holy Trinity have reached the final after an impressive nine point win against Kenmare and that was after the Kerry side were ten points ahead at one stage. They are coached by Aidan O’Hagan, Stefan Forker and ace Tyrone attacker Mark Bradley, but never too far away is Tyrone legend Peter Canavan who holds the lofty title of ‘Director of Sport’.
which is a very good sign for them. I know very little about their opposition on Saturday, Cookstown, except to say that they are coached by Peter Canavan and he is a man who knows a fair bit about how to win big matches. “It’s a marvellous opportunity for these young players to play for a national title in Croke Park
