SUMMER

After widespread speculation that voters in Roscommon-Galway would deliver a No vote in last Friday’s historic referendum on the eighth amendment, the constituency

in fact returned a convincing Yes. The electorate voted 57.21% to 42.79% in favour of repeal amid jubilant scenes at the count in the Hyde Centre on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, local TDs Michael Fitzmaurice and Eugene Murphy came

under fire from Yes campaigner and Sinn Féin spokesperson Claire Kerrane, who accused them of trying to prevent the people from having their say in last Friday’s abortion referendum. See pages 4,5,8 and 10 for full coverage.

What’s your idea of the perfect night in? The perfect night in for me would involve sitting in the garden listening to Lizzy – Thin Lizzy that is! And the ideal night out? Eating good food with great friends while chatting and catching up. What would be your idea of a perfect weekend away in Ireland? There would be no real planning involved to be honest. It would probably be just me hitching a lift to anywhere that takes my fancy! What about a holiday abroad? That would have to be France. I haven’t been there in ages and I would love to go back.

What do you do to relax? There are a number of things that help me to relax. Meditation, listening to music and working in the garden all help me wind down. I also present a show on RosFM and I find that quite relaxing too. What’s your favourite place in Co. Roscommon? My home (Stonehaven) or Mote Park. Both are surrounded by nice views and nature.

Our Person of the Week… Quote of

Roscommon manager Kevin McStay took a stand for the ‘little guy’ during his interview with local media in the aftermath of last Saturday’s Connacht SFC semi-final win over Leitrim in Carrick-on-Shannon. McStay was adamant that should Galway beat Sligo in their semi-final this Sunday, Roscommon would be playing the Connacht final at Dr. Hyde Park. It was a good week for Yes campaigners across the county and nationwide as Ireland voted overwhelmingly to repeal the 8th amendment.

Bad WEEK

My husband passed away recently. I understand that he made a will prior to his death and he left his large farm to his nephew. The farm was in his name only. Our home was also in his name and he left me with just a life interest in my home and after my death it will also pass to his nephew. I am very disappointed and I feel ill-treated. Is there anything I can do? The law governing wills, namely the Succession Act, 1965, provides unique protection for spouses of the deceased in Ireland. You refer to a will and I am assuming that your late husband’s will is valid. You are entitled to onehalf of your late husband’s estate if he died having made a valid will and he had no children. You are entitled to one-third of your late husband’s estate if he died having made a valid will and he had children. This entitlement is called a legal right share. The legal right share ranks in priority after the rights of creditors of the deceased and ahead of any other beneficiary. You do not have to go to court to get your entitlement as the executor of his estate is obliged to grant this share to you where applicable. You should contact your Solicitor immediately to obtain legal advice as strict time limits apply in respect of claiming your inheritance share. I should also mention that a surviving spouse may cease to be entitled to a legal right share in a number circumstances to include legal separation or divorce. It would be usual for a spouse to renounce their legal right share as part of the terms of a divorce or legal separation agreement following the dissolution of a marriage. Contact Byrne Carolan Cunningham dedicated Wills & Inheritance Law Department in confidence for advice specific to your situation.

Some surprise as Roscommon voters support repeal  DAN DOONER

International media had descended on Roscommon town in the past few weeks with many expecting the constituency to deliver a No vote in the abortion referendum. In the end, Roscommon Galway voted 57.21% to 42.79% in favour of repeal amid jubilant scenes at the Hyde Park count centre. The constituency voted 23,677 to 17,709 in favour of repeal. The overall turnout was 65.7% from an electorate of 63,158. There were 111 invalid ballots. Roscommon Together For Yes campaigner Julie O’Donoghue said that confidence had grown as the campaign went on. “We felt ourselves that there were a lot of silent Yes voters in Roscommon. The Yes voters were gaining more confidence as weeks went by and they were taking the badges and wearing them proudly so we’ve been hopeful and we felt along that the Yes vote here could have a higher turnout than people were anticipating. We were at the doors and on the streets and we knew that the response was positive and that people were receptive to voting Yes,” she said. Sinn Féin General Election candidate and Yes campaigner Claire Kerrane said she had expected a Yes vote but was delighted when it was confirmed. “I think women have been listened to and they’ve been heard. Personal stories have carried this across the line, I believe. People have come out, mothers have come out, parents have come out and told of their suffering. That’s not going to happen anymore because we’re not going to stand for it,” she said. Fianna Fáil Senator Terry Leyden, a no voter who supported the 1983 referendum which saw Roscommon voting to give equal right to life to the mother and the unborn by a margin of 83.8%, complimented the yes side. “The yes campaign was very

effective,” he said, adding that he was not surprised by the yes vote’s victory and that things had changed since the 1983 referendum. “The no campaign was not as emotive as it was in the past. The people who voted yes were not voting for abortion, they were voting for a humane approach to

people in difficulties, whether it was fatal fetal abnormalities or cases of rape or incest,” he said. “They asked whether it was appropriate for those people to be sent to a foreign country to be dealt with medically”. Fianna Fáil TD and No advocate, Eugene Murphy said he stood over his own position but

accepted the will of the people despite the despondency of members of the No campaign. “My issue was with the 12 weeks and I had a personal issue with that, I’m not going to go into it but in terms of scans I see 9 weeks. I am a pro-life person but at the same time I have to recognise that the people who voted are saying ‘This is our will’”. It had been described as “a once in a generation referendum” and there were emotional scenes as mother and daughter Roscommon Together For Yes campaigners, Georgina and Natalie Barrow from Strokestown, embraced. Georgina said it had been an emotional day. “The very first meeting we went together, we canvassed together every evening and every weekend. It’s so emotional; I’ve cried so much today. It’s something you wouldn’t get to do very often; canvass with your family for something you strongly believe in”. Natalie said she was proud to play her part in delivering a Yes vote in Co. Roscommon, adding that the experience had brought her closer to her mother. “Every time I saw a box coming in from a town I had canvassed personally in it was emotional. Myself and mum were a team, we went together during the weeks. It was the two of us going door to door and ringing doorbells and it brought us closer”.

COMMENT Seamus Duke From the time that the RTE and Irish Times exit poll results were made known, it was clear that the Irish people had delivered an emphatic message in last Friday’s referendum. Even here in ‘conservative’ Roscommon, the result was very clearcut and the hordes of media who had descended on the county last weekend in expectation of a ‘No’ result were left disappointed! The results of the referendums on Marriage Equality and the 8th Amendment have shown in no uncertain terms that the grip that the Catholic Church had on Irish society is now a thing of the past. The intervention of Bishop Kevin Doran since the result has been unfortunate, and although he is perfectly entitled to his opinion, his language has been inappropriate and smacks of a bygone age when the Church felt it could talk down to its people.

Pictured in the Hyde Centre for the Eighth Amendment Referendum count were Aoife Fallon, Claire Kerrane and Natalie Barrow. Picture: Andrew Fox

The facts are that many of the people who voted Yes are anti-abortion, but they felt that it was not their place to tell women what to do. The leadership on this referendum came from the testimonies of the many women who had endured terrible hardship as a result of having to deal with the 8th amendment. The right to choose won the day. It was a political gamble

for Leo Varadkar to take on this very thorny issue, an issue that many Governments in the past ran a mile from. It was also a very brave move from Micheál Martin to take the view that he did when the majority of his party had a different opinion. People may not agree with either man or their parties, but leadership is all about taking difficult decisions and they came up trumps in

that regard here. In general the campaign was respectful and hard-fought and all views were aired. Now that it’s over, both sides should respect each other’s views. The people have spoken and the Government must now act on their wishes. It was also noticeable that two out of the three TD’s in our constituency were committed ‘No’ voters and while Minister Naughten was non-committal, the

people did not support the views of their political representatives. However, political representatives and church leaders are entitled to have their opinion respected, even if it is the minority view. People reading this might assume that I was a Yes voter, but I actually voted No. That decision had nothing to do with religious grounds, and I fully accept the result and feel that we must move on now. I don’t accept the view that it was ‘a sad day for Ireland’ like some have said since last weekend. In fact a lot of the Yes votes were cast on compassionate grounds, which I can totally understand. This result is another watershed moment in modern Ireland. Our country is moving on and the old institutions are being dismantled – brick by brick. It might not be a bad thing either. It’s time we went back now to dealing with other issues like homelessness, the housing shortage and inequality. This particular battle has been won and lost.

Roscommon People Friday 01 June 2018

NewsPeople Uncertainty over whether or not Hyde Park will host the Connacht Final if it’s Roscommon v Galway prompted a fierce backlash from businesses and fans in the past week – and a firm intervention by team manager Kevin McStay. SEAMUS DUKE gives his view…

‘County Board should be developing Hyde Park and Runnabracken at the same time’ As I write this article on Tuesday, it is still not one hundred per cent certain that if Galway win against Sligo next Sunday in Salthill, that the Connacht SFC final will be played at Dr. Hyde Park in Roscommon. As is usual with these controversies, there are a number of aspects to the story, and one must be very careful in evaluating the situation. County Board Executives and Connacht Council members do not always take kindly to criticism, but in the words of Kevin McStay last Saturday evening “there is fault on both sides here”. As I reported here last week, the GAA’s National Infrastructural Committee, Health and Safety Division informed Roscommon County Board almost two years ago that a ‘permanent structure’ was needed at Dr. Hyde Park, into which turnstiles would be inserted. That would mean that crowds could be segregated into various areas of the ground on the day of a big game. However, the only major work that has been carried out at Dr. Hyde Park since it was taken over by the County Board was the re-laying of the pitch, which was paid for by Croke Park. No work on any permanent structure has been undertaken. In the meantime, the County Board have prioritised expenditure on the establishment of a county teams’ training centre at Runnabracken. No-one would dispute that Roscommon county teams need a centre where they can train, and all these major infrastructural projects cost big money. But the facts are that if the work that was needed at Dr. Hyde Park was carried out it would be repaid with the rent income from big games over the next few years and we wouldn’t be in the fix

we are in now. I cannot see why the County Board cannot keep the two projects (Hyde Park and Runnabracken) going at the same time. Both are vital to the running of Roscommon GAA. I fully realise that there are financial issues at play here too, and that officers on the executive are under pressure with regard to scarce finances. But finance for the work needed at Dr. Hyde Park would be borrowed and paid for within a couple of years from match rent. It’s guaranteed money. The Runnabracken

Park is plenty big enough the way it stands. There are several solutions to this problem. There is talk of a ‘mobile ticket scanning system’ which may be another way that would allow the game to go ahead under increased capacity. Having been on the Dr. Hyde Park Committee for over 20 years in the past and having watched closely what has happened since at the ground, my sense this week is that if it is Galway and Roscommon in the Connacht final, it will go ahead in Dr. Hyde Park.

‘If the final were not to go ahead at Hyde Park, the fall-out will be felt for years to come’

centre, even though badly needed, is a longer-term project. On the other side of the coin, much the same problems at Dr. Hyde Park were flagged in 2015 and it was possible then to iron out those issues to allow Mayo and Sligo play in the decider and accommodate a crowd of over 23,000 people. Nothing has changed since as far as I can see. It would seem that there is no problem when it suits the Connacht Council to allow these games to go ahead, but suddenly there is a problem now. They say that the capacity at Dr. Hyde Park at present is 18,500. If that is the case, then let them have an all-ticket Connacht Final at that capacity. Last year in Salthill at the match between Galway and Roscommon the official attendance was 18,267, so Dr. Hyde

Hopefully common sense will prevail. There are reasonable people on all sides here. I have huge admiration for Kevin McStay and the stance he has taken (see page 45). The implications of the Connacht final not going ahead in Roscommon if that’s where it should be played would be huge. The biggest losers would be our young team who want to successfully defend their title, but there would be massive collateral damage with regard to loss of business on the biggest sporting day of the year West of the Shannon. There would also be a real fear that if we lose the final this year it will not come back again. It is an unwanted distraction for Kevin McStay to feel that he needed to go out on a limb and make this intervention with a big game to prepare for. If the

final were not to go ahead at Hyde Park, the fall-out will be felt for years to come. When this situation is resolved, the work required at Dr. Hyde Park must be carried out to the satisfaction of the authorities so that this situation does not come up again. Remember that if Roscommon get into the Super 8s there will be at least one more big home match this summer. We don’t want this debate again in six weeks’ time. The people involved in this situation are decent people, volunteers who give up their time to work for the GAA, and I’m sure that this is the last thing they want to be involved in. But they have a responsibility to the “Roscommon GAA family” – to quote Kevin McStay – and let’s hope that there is a solution that is amicable to everyone involved. I would be confident that it will be solved. Of course if Sligo beat Galway on Sunday we will have a completely different situation! Work is being carried out at Dr. Hyde Park this week by volunteers drawn from clubs around the county. I was talking to the County Chairman Seamus Sweeney yesterday (Wednesday) and he told me that he was not expecting a final decision on the venue for the final to be made until after the Galway v Sligo game on Sunday. He also told me that he was certain that “all issues with regard to Dr. Hyde Park” will be dealt with by Roscommon County Board. Everyone associated with the GAA in Roscommon will be hoping that if it is a Roscommon v Galway fixture the big event can go ahead at Dr. Hyde Park.

“It is not a debate…the Connacht final will be played at Hyde Park” – Kevin McStay speaks out (page 45)

Meeting on Connacht Final this weekend  DAN DOONER

Roscommon GAA yesterday (Wednesday) released a statement regarding the potential hosting of this year’s Connacht Final at Dr. Hyde Park. The statement read as follows: “Everyone involved in Roscommon GAA was absolutely delighted last Saturday evening when we qualified for our third Connacht final in a row by defeating Leitrim. Roscommon GAA are looking forward to taking on Galway or Sligo on Sunday, June 17th in the final. “Roscommon GAA fully accepts the venue of the Connacht final will be decided by the Connacht CCC and this will be done when the winner of the Galway v Sligo game is known”. Roscommon GAA Secretary, Brian Carroll, added that he had met with Connacht Secretary John Prenty earlier this week. “I held a very constructive meeting with Connacht GAA Secretary John Prenty this week about the suitability of Dr. Hyde Park for the hosting of Connacht Championship games in the future and also a potential Connacht final and another meeting is planned for this weekend,” he said.

Second phase of ‘Reimagining St. Brigid’s’ Minister Denis Naughten has confirmed that the project he announced recently – ‘Reimagining St. Brigid’s’ – is now moving on to the second phase, a discussion-based workshop. Minister Naughten recently asked the public to complete a survey on St. Brigid’s Hospital aiming to explore potential new uses for the site. “I would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the survey and those who also submitted detailed submissions,” commented Minister Naughten. “The response to this project has been extremely positive with over 600 surveys completed, which has confirmed my belief that everyone has a view on what the future of this site should be.

- Thursday June 7th, 3.00pm-6.00pm

“This is a site with enormous potential and this project is the first step in reimagining what the future could hold for it”. Minister Naughten added: “This is an exploratory process and each survey response has been analysed and will now form part of the next stage of this project which is a discussion-based workshop in the town on the potential future use of this site. “This workshop will bring together not just representatives of the local community but also people from across the country representing business interests, state agencies, the arts, enterprise bodies, etc. and I look forward to seeing what emerges from this event”.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor

paul@roscommonpeople.ie

‘Go now…to that strange place they call Roscommon!’ (Or how we kind of fooled the world’s media)

T

hey came here in their droves,

the so-called international media, with their snazzy equipment, their curiosity and their hastily-formed fledgling grasp of where and who we are. “Get to that God-fearing outback in Ireland – that backwater, I mean Roscommon – even if you have to walk through the roughest terrain and encounter the most hostile and suspicious of natives, just get me a report from there!” I imagined excitable Editors had bellowed to their startled journalists in far-off lands. So they duly came here in their droves, the international media, dispatched to Roscommon because of that unfair notoriety that befell this county when we narrowly rejected the same-sex marriage proposals three years ago. From newspapers and radio and television stations and websites in the UK and across Europe, they descended on Roscommon, utterly intrigued by what they might find in the Place That Says No. They arrived, perhaps expecting to find sullen-faced backwoodsmen and backwoodswomen, peering out from behind the curtains in mundane abodes, ‘Down with that sort of thing’ placards leaning against our gables. They arrived in the Place That Says No expecting cold weather and conservatism. When they got here they found us drinking lattes in the sunshine as we quietly plotted a kind of liberal coup! When it came to seeking a sense of the county and its people – of the campaign too – they came to the Roscommon People offices. “You are cut off from Dublin, you don’t have many trains” one of them said/asked – just a touch judgementally – but I let that pass quickly, like a train whistling through Knockcroghery on a summer’s day. First in, on that quiet Friday, Harriet, the nice lady from The Guardian, who was once Jerusalem Correspondent and who was now headed for Ballaghaderreen via Roscommon. I explained a little about Ballaghaderreen to her, but I didn’t mention the war (Mayo v Roscommon) as Harriet has been in enough bruising battlegrounds. Next, I think, was a chap from “the Times of London”. He was followed by a Mr. James Rothwell, the Brexit Correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. They were all here in the week before the referendum on the 8th Amendment, all anxious to get a flavour of the campaign in a county which, post our same-sex vote, was somewhat lazily

newsbrief Fitzmaurice and Murphy tried to deny people their say – Kerrane Sinn Féin spokesperson for Roscommon, Claire Kerrane has said that both Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice and Deputy Eugene Murphy tried to deny the people their say on the historic referendum held last Friday. “It is an absolute disgrace that two public representatives voted against allowing the people their say on such an important and serious matter. This is in direct contradiction to the democracy we are supposed to live in. “While both Deputies have said that they will respect the will of the people, it should be remembered that they did not want the people to have their say in the first place. I have never witnessed a situation where elected representatives have attempted to deny the people they represent a say in a referendum. “I am unsure as to why both Deputies made the decision to oppose the referendum Bill, it makes no sense to me,” she concluded.

Padraic Bradley Walk in aid of Pieta House The 5th Annual Padraic Bradley Walk in aid of Pieta House takes place from John’s of Doughill this Sunday (June 3rd), starting at 1.30 pm. The walk will be followed by music and a barbeque at John’s of Doughill with all proceeds going towards Pieta House. All welcome.

labelled as the most conservative in Ireland. I tried to explain to one of the reporters that Leitrim had to take some responsibility for that vote, but neither of us had the will to delve much into that. On the Tuesday before the vote, a very nice German chap arrived in a fabulous Mini Cooper which he had hired at Dublin Airport before whizzing down the sun-drenched motorway and booking into Gleeson’s. Jochen is Political Correspondent with the Frankfurter Allgemeine, one of Germany’s top national newspapers (his report from Roscommon featured on page 3 last Friday). I took Jochen on a quick tour of town in the glorious sunshine, following the same route I had taken with the Telegraph’s Brexit correspondent. Next morning, he rang to say he was struggling to find Yes voters, specifically a female yes voter. It seemed to endorse the expectation that Roscommon would vote No. We made a few calls to help the German reporter with the beautiful white Mini Cooper parked outside Gleeson’s. Next, a very friendly man from a Danish radio station. He linked me up live to one of their current affairs programmes (I spoke English, he translated). “It’s very easy these days, you just use an App” he said of the seamless live link between Abbey Street and Denmark, and I nodded knowingly, as if we were chatting about the price of a litre of milk. By Thursday, I thought the media interest in Roscommon had eased off, but it was about to escalate! More media arrived in town, this time representing Spanish and Polish news

organisations – zooming in on Yes and No posters, seeking feedback from people in The Square, even popping up to the Sacred Heart Church to attend Mass and assess the mood of the congregation. Four or five of this latest batch of journalists popped into the People office for a chat, and they were the nicest of people. Pablo is UK Correspondent with El País, “the most read newspaper in Spain”. Jakub is UK Correspondent with the Polish Press Agency. They were amazed at how many people had attended Mass on Thursday morning; and they were wowed by the size and splendour of the Sacred Heart Church. I accepted the compliments on behalf of the people of Roscommon and proudly filled them in (well, kind of) on the history of the building. Next, the international media approached the people as they left Mass. Interestingly, they reported that several men (mostly elderly) had been happy to talk to them about the referendum, while women had shied away. The men were “all” No voters, politely informing the Polish reporter that the country is changing far too rapidly. The women, without exception, declined to comment on their intentions. I did an interview with Maciej for a Polish television station (again, I chose to speak English), keeping to my party line, which was to assure them that (a) this is a relatively conservative county and (b) we are likely to see a No vote in Roscommon. We were all pretty much in agreement with that assessment – it turns out I read it wrong by seven or eight

percentage points. Basically I misled the world’s media. Credibility just a little damaged, I’m unlikely to ever work in Polish TV again. I took those guys on a quick tour of town too, boasting about our facilities, our quality of life, our lack of crime, our great sunshine (I avoided the potholes on the Athlone Road). They all seemed to really like Roscommon, in fact some of them were smitten with the town! Later on Thursday, Ciaran Mullooly of RTE arrived and did a quick interview (we stuck with English), backed up by lots of slagging. Normal service had resumed! By Friday, the sparkling white Mini Cooper had left town – so too had the international media, now somewhat confused, I suspect. They had been told of this ‘conservative country’ and to some extent I had backed that up, as had just about everyone they had spoken to. They had also been shown a vibrant, beautiful county town with friendly people toing and froing in spectacular sunshine! On Saturday, confirmation of an overwhelming Yes vote by the people of Ireland. Back in the Polish Agency, frantic googling of Donegal. In Roscommon, evidence that lattes and spelt baps in the sunshine is the new order. Roscommon voted to repeal. That Place That Says No had said Yes. Change, change, change. The old men outside the Sacred Heart Church – salt of the earth they are too – had woken up to a changed Roscommon. The women who wouldn’t talk on Thursday had spoken loud and clear on Friday.

Bishop Jones a Champion for the West The Chairman of the Council for the West, Declan O’Callaghan, has paid tribute to the late Bishop Emeritus of Elphin, Christopher Jones, whose death occurred recently. Bishop Jones was a founder member of the Council for the West and a passionate advocate for Western rural development all his life. Mr. O’Callagan said: “As an organisation dedicated to the development of the Western region, we are extremely saddened to learn of Bishop Jones’s passing. “Together with his fellow Bishops, Bishop Jones was instrumental in the Developing the West Together initiative which led to the establishment of both the Western Development Partnership Board and the voluntary Council for the West, in 1994. “Bishop Christy, as he was known affectionately to us all, was a man of deep Christian conviction who was modest, warm and dedicated to the people he served throughout his life. He was a passionate advocate for developing and sustaining community life west of the Shannon”.

Loss of 15 jobs at KFC in Roscommon There was news of a jobs blow for Roscommon town recently following the announcement that the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and Drive Thru located at Centrepoint Retail Park is set to close. The fast food giant says it is “relocating” the business, which has been in operation for over ten years, employing 15 people. As of yet, there has been no confirmation

Pupils from St Michael’s School in Castlerea.

St. Michael’s up for Eco Rangers Award! Bord na Móna have announced the shortlist for their 1st Annual Eco Rangers Awards and St Michael’s School in Castlerea is amongst the final 12. This year, a record number of 660 schools signed up across the country, with over 50,000 children participating in the programme. Commenting on the announcement, Sara Byrne, Brand Manager at Bord na Móna said: “I want to congratulate the 12 schools

that make up the shortlist for these awards. Schools from Kildare, Offaly, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare, Longford, Roscommon, Leitrim and Cavan have been shortlisted for the awards. “The Eco Rangers programme is about encouraging schools to make a small change and to get back outside, reconnect with nature and to protect the habitats near them. The introduction of the awards this year mean that we can

recognise the efforts of the schools and showcase the changes that are happening in the schools across the country”. Caroline Mitchell, a teacher at St. Michael’s School, expressed her joy at making the shortlist. “The students were delighted to take part in the Eco Rangers programme and relished the opportunity to learn about the plants and animals in the local area. As well as going on ‘eco safaris’ they also had

great fun designing and making a ‘bug palace’ in our school wildlife area. “For pupils who have special needs it was a particularly engaging and concrete experience, which facilitated cross curricular learning, as well as having a wonderful time in the process,” she said. Eco Rangers aims to reconnect children with nature while encouraging them to learn about different habitats and ecosystems.

as to where the business will be relocated. The 3,000 sq. ft. unit is currently available to lease and auctioneer P Burke said he is confident a replacement tenant will be found for the site on the outskirts of Roscommon town. With interest already expressed in the premises, it is hoped that a new tenant can be found as soon as possible.

NewsPeople POLITICAL PEOPLE

Many local politicians wrong-footed by voters – but Ming has pep in his step  PAUL HEALY

This was a truly historic vote by the people of Roscommon/Galway. The Roscommon electorate defied the image of this county being one of the most conservative/traditional areas in the country with a stunning about-turn in the public’s view of the highly contentious abortion issue. Last Friday, over 57% of the electorate here voted for repeal of the 8th. That contrasted with a record-breaking 83.8% support in Roscommon for the introduction of the Eighth Amendment back in 1983, and with the county’s rejection of the same-sex marriage proposals in 2015. “We’re complicated, not conservative” is how a jubilant Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan summed it up. Flanagan was one of only a handful of Roscommon politicians who were instinctively pleased with the result (others are adapting to the outcome). The surprise Roscommon/Galway Yes vote wrong-footed TDs Michael Fitzmaurice and Eugene Murphy, neither of whom expected this outcome. Several Roscommon county councillors – like Murphy and Fitzmaurice –had openly backed the No side, as had Senator Terry Leyden. Minister Denis Naughten had kept his counsel. The fact that their view was unexpectedly at variance with that of the majority in Roscommon/Galway is an embarrassment for Fitzmaurice and Murphy, and could lead to accusations

Pictured in the Hyde Centre for the Eighth Amendment Referendum count were Cllr. Liam Callaghan, Cllr. Michael Creighton, Luke Flanagan MEP and Deputy Eugene Murphy. Picture: Andrew Fox

that they are out of touch with their electorate. However, I don’t expect either man to lose too much sleep over the political fall-out. Firstly, the fact that the two TDs were out of step with the majority of their electorate on this one is likely to be a one-weekend wonder. Secondly, both can play the ‘so what’ card. They can legitimately argue that they made their views known early in the campaign – there was no equivocating, both men were staunchly opposed to repeal. Given that Fitzmaurice is an Independent and that Fianna Fáil allowed a free vote – and given that this is a very personal matter, a conscience vote – that ought to be the end of it.

In any event, either man would be very happy with a decent share of Friday’s No vote in the next election! Mind you, Eugene will have noted that the Yes side won in his Strokestown home patch (tallies suggesting 474 Yes, 324 No in the town), while the Yes side also won in other parts of Murphy’s heartland, such as Rooskey, Slatta, etc. It’s the same story for Fitzmaurice, with the Yes side apparently winning in Creggs and Glinsk! Minister Denis Naughten attracted some criticism for not showing his hand in public but that too will pass and he has reiterated this week that he felt his stance was the right one, given the uniquely per-

sonal nature of the decision faced by the people. The Roscommon vote represented a return to the centre stage for MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan. There has been criticism in some quarters that our man in Europe is rarely seen these days. But ‘Ming’ was back with a vengeance during this campaign and he has shown once again that he is in tune with the public mood, especially, you suspect, with what young people are thinking. A future ‘Let’s get Ming back in the Dáil’ campaign cannot be ruled out. There was significant engagement by young people in this campaign and that contributed to the outcome in Roscommon. Besides, attitudes are changing in Roscommon. Suffice to say, the label which was lazily attached to this county after the electorate here marginally voted against same-sex marriage has been cast aside. Time will tell whether the vote is a once-off leap into more liberal territory or a more permanent move. Almost 43% of the electorate here still voted No, and you can be sure that many of those who voted Yes had reservations. No doubt many of the No voters were tempted to vote Yes too, but just couldn’t take that step. Ultimately, Roscommon people voted with compassion, and with women’s rights uppermost in their minds. Now we’re part-conservative, part-liberal – a traditionally conservative people and county moving with the times, slowly changing as our society changes. Maybe that man Ming was right – we’re complicated, not conservative.

This Saturday (June 2nd) from 10 am to 12 pm, Molloy’s Bakery, Abbeytown, Roscommon will host a very special Coffee Morning in order to raise funds for a project involving Roscommon town native, Paul Nolan. Paul will travel to Bogota in Colombia later in June to build 58 homes in one of the city’s most impoverished districts. A son of Gerry and Maria Nolan, Paul is 30-years-old and a former student of CBS Roscommon. He is a keen GAA supporter and played football with Kilbride. This Saturday morning, Roscommon senior football manager Kevin McStay and team captain Conor Devaney, with the Nestor Cup in tow, will be special guests in Molloy’s for this very worthwhile fundraiser. Paul always had a social conscience and during his teenage years he was involved with fundraising and house-building projects in South Africa. The idea for this project in Bogota has its origins in Kyoto, Japan when Paul and his colleague Matt Williams discussed ways in which they could make a positive impact during their time on Remote Year. Remote Year is a programme which provides work and travel projects that bring together communities of passionate professionals, freelancers and entrepreneurs to travel the world while working remotely. Paul said he was looking forward to the Bogota trip, which will involve 58 members of Remote Year Yugen, a group of people who travel the world and take part in such projects. “Given this amazing opportunity of being fortunate enough to travel the world, I almost felt like I had to do more to give back,” he said. “I discussed with Matt potential ways we could help in the communities we are visiting, in particular a building project which we could physically get involved in in Bogotá, Colombia. “The goal, by working with the reputable company of TECHO, would be to fundraise for 58 homes – one for each member of Remote Year Yugen – in one of the most impoverished areas in Bogotá”. Paul and his fellow ‘Yugens’ will travel to Bogota later in June to assist in the construction of the new homes. In the meantime, the group is seeking donations, big or small, in order to carry out the construction and

assist those in desperate need. The Molloy family is therefore delighted to host Saturday’s fundraising coffee morning and would like to welcome everyone to Abbeytown from 10 am to 12 noon.

For those who are unable to attend, donations towards this very worthwhile project will be gratefully received all week in Molloy’s Bakery or online at www.Yugenbuild. com.

Lecarrow Benevolent Fund hosts annual fundraising auction and raffle this Sunday Over €180,000 raised to help local communities Lecarrow Benevolent Fund will hold its annual fundraising auction and raffle this Sunday night, 3rd of June 2018. The auction will take place at 10 pm in Coffey’s Pub, Lecarrow. There will be a large number of lots for auction on the night including a sheepdog pup, ewe lambs, Aberdeen Angus heifer calf, vouchers for dinner for two as well as pool & gym membership, fuel vouchers and much much more. Tickets are currently for sale from committee members for the raffle which will take place on Sunday night with prizes including: €500 cash, one

week accommodation in Albufeira, a television, 2 nights’ B&B + dinner in the Galway Bay Hotel plus many more. Tickets are €2 each or a book of 3 for €5. Lecarrow Benevolent Fund is a unique way of assisting people that was devised when a small group of community-minded individuals came together in 2001 to assist groups and individuals in difficulty. To date the fund has raised in the region of €180,000 which has been distributed throughout the parish and surrounding areas to those in need. There are times in everyone’s life when money is needed, whether it is when loved ones become ill, a person loses their job

or when a child becomes ill and a parent may have to take time off work and organise care for siblings while still having to worry about the mortgage, utility bills, etc. The success of Lecarrow Benevolent Fund shows how communities can help themselves. In June of each year the Fund holds its annual fundraiser with a raffle and auction. This could not take place without the generous sponsors who come on board every year, the ticket sellers and the support of the people of the parish and beyond. While a significant portion of the funds raised are distributed throughout the parish, Lecarrow Benevolent Fund has also reached out to a wider area including Roscommon, Castlerea, Monksland, Dysart, Brideswell, Curraghboy and Dublin. The Fund has also paved the way for the purchase of life-saving equipment including the installation and maintenance costs of defibrillators throughout the area.

Star and a new feature of a beautiful crib located in the shadow of the star, illuminating the village over the Christmas season. Also pride of place is a miniature thatched cottage made locally and donated to the Fund. As a further gesture of gratitude Lecarrow Benevolent Fund also supported a local tourism initiative by part-funding four heritage signs for the parish. In 2017 Lecarrow Benevolent Fund was nominated for a Pride of Place Award for its ongoing work. Lecarrow Benevolent Fund looks forward to welcoming everyone to Coffey’s this Sunday. Music and refreshments will be served.

NewsPeople Minister Ring to open AshPark in Kilteevan Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, will officially open Ash Park in Kilteevan this Friday evening. The event will commence with Mass in the park at 7 pm. Following Mass, Minister Ring will perform the official opening along with Fr. Seán Beirne, C.C. Weather-permitting, there will be lots of entertainment for children and light refreshments will also be served. In 2015, the Kilteevan Community Development Group successfully negotiated with the Elphin Diocese to obtain a long-term lease of the land between St. Joseph’s Church and the community centre. That land is now called Ash Park. The group decided the best use of this land would involve providing recreational facilities for the people of the locality. This vision has led to the development of a children’s playground with a surrounding perimeter walkway. Over the coming months, adult exercise equipment will be also be provided. The development, which has been funded by the Government’s CLAR funding programme as well as grant funding, will be officially opened by Minister Michael Ring this Friday evening for what will be a great start to the bank holiday weekend.

Teagasc Farm Income survey results are in… Average farm income for 2017 was €31,300 IFA President Joe Healy said the preliminary results of the Teagasc 2017 National Farm Income survey highlighted the critical importance of CAP direct supports across all farming sectors and the dangers of hugely volatile or weak price returns. Mr. Healy said with the major challenges from Brexit and the CAP post-2020, the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed and the Irish Government needed to work “twice as hard” to secure a positive Brexit outcome and an

increase in the CAP budget. “The increase in average farm income for 2017 to €31,300 comes off the back of a difficult year in 2016. Farming on the whole remains a low-income activity, with average earnings well below the average industrial wage. “The 2017 figure is influenced by the positive performance from dairy farms, the vast majority of which are full time, with higher volumes and better prices after a difficult year in 2016. It also

illustrates the extreme income volatility which challenges dairy farmers: milk prices have been cut by up to 6c/l this year already, and spring volumes have suffered from the bad weather. EU market supports and voluntary risk management tools, including through national tax-based measures, must be developed to help farmers cope with those sharp swings in cash flow,” he said. Mr. Healy said that the Teagasc income figures on livestock clearly demonstrate the depend-

ence of dry stock farmers on direct payments and the need for strong additional support for suckler farmers. He said the figures fully support the IFA campaign for additional targeted support of €200 for suckler cows. He added: “The low-income figures on the livestock, sheep and grain side, the sectors most dependent on direct payments, show that Minister Creed has to demand and insist on an increase in the CAP Budget in the negotiations in Brussels”.

Road Safety appeal for silage season With the silage season almost in full swing, the state’s dairy farmer organisation has appealed for all rural road users to be aware and concentrate over the next six weeks or so. Denis Drennan, Chairperson of ICMSA’s Farm and Rural Affairs Committee said: “During this period there will be a very significant increase in the number of tractors and other farm machines on rural roads and it was incumbent on all road users – whether farmers, contractors, car users, cyclists or pedestrians – to take additional precautions to ensure that silage can be harvested safely and without any accidents on roads”. Mr. Drennan noted the increase in size of agricultural machinery over the years and said that particularly on narrow rural roads, it is critical that all road users take extra care and “expect the unexpected” over the next six weeks.

Launch of Rindoon Castle and Deserted Medieval Town Guidebook The launch took place on 23rd of May of a brand new guidebook ‘Rindoon Castle and Deserted Medieval Town – a Visitors Guide’, written by Dr. Kieran O’Conor, NUI, Galway and archaeologist Brian Shanahan. The authors have extensive knowledge of medieval County Roscommon. The guidebook was commissioned by Roscommon County Council as an action of the County Roscommon Heritage Plan 2017-2021. The project has been funded by the Heritage Council and supported by Roscommon County Council. Richard Collins, well-known to many for his involvement with Rindoon over the years, performed the launch. Cllr. Orla Leyden, Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council; Eugene Cummins, Chief Executive, Roscommon County Council; Dr. Kieran O’Conor and Mel McGerr from St. John’s Parish Heritage Group also addressed the crowd at the launch. In ‘Rindoon Castle and Deserted Medieval Town – a Visitors Guide’, Kieran O’Conor and Brian Shanahan chart the story of Rindoon from start to finish. The full colour illustrated guidebook examines: Pre-Norman activity at Rindoon; the history of the Anglo-Norman royal castle and town; a tour of the thirteenth-century remains at Rindoon; the programme of conservation works undertaken in the past ten years which was largely funded by The Heritage Council and the Irish Walled Towns Network in conjunction with St. John’s Parish Heritage Group and Blackwood Associates Architects; the late medieval period at Rindoon; late sixteenth-century and post-medieval activity at Rindoon. The guidebook is beautifully illustrated throughout with detailed historical reconstruction drawings by Daniel Tietzsch Tyler. Fantastic photos from Paul Naessens of Western Aerial Survey give a bird’s eye view of the site. Rindoon is accessible for walkers via the Rinn Duin Castle Loop and Rinn Duin Warren Point Loop by kind courtesy of PJ Grady, the landowner. “Roscommon County Council is delighted to donate a copy of the guidebook to all schools in the county who should get their copy in the coming weeks. The guidebook will be available from library branches around the county and will be on sale from the Heritage Office at Roscommon County Council, Roscommon Tourist Office & County Museum in the Square in Roscommon town; St. John’s Parish Heritage Group and from Rathcroghan Visitor Centre whose online bookshop www.rathcroghan.ie will make the book available worldwide”, says Nollaig Feeney Heritage Officer.

Reinstate Government supports for regional airports – Murphy Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has called for the reintroduction of government supports for regional airports in a bid to strengthen vital tourism links to the west and midlands. “The supports for regional airports were vital in supporting the development of these airports as well as direct flights to and from Dublin airport, from Knock International Airport, Galway Airport and Sligo Airport. “When the Fine Gael Government cut these supports in 2011,

it meant both Galway Airport and Sligo Airport stopped having the commercial viability to operate scheduled flights. Reintroducing these supports on a long term basis would create jobs directly at these regional airports but would much more importantly provide a vital tourist link to the region allowing tourists to directly transfer from Dublin airport to the regionals particularly in the west and midlands,” said Deputy Murphy. The Fianna Fáil TD also pointed out that having flights from re-

gional airports to Dublin reinstated would act as an investment attraction. “As Brexit approaches we should be doing all we can to attract banking and insurance jobs to our local towns and having direct flights to Dublin and supporting more international flights to our regional airports would mean that such companies would not be confined to Dublin where office rents are high and accommodation for staff in short supply instead they could realistically

look at towns like Ballaghaderreen, Boyle, Ballinasloe, Castlerea and Roscommon town,” he said. Deputy Murphy added that reintroducing supports for regional airports would “directly support local jobs and make our areas more accessible to tourists and more attractive for outside investment”. He called on Minister Denis Naughten to work with him in “supporting this step towards economic recovery”.

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Cllr. Orla Leyden, Louise Ward, LEO and CEO of Roscommon County Council, Eugene Cummins are also among those pictured.

Hyatt’s franchise agreement with Hodson Bay Group There was quite a unique gathering last Wednesday week at Hodson Bay Hotel, on the shores of Lough Ree. Jason Ballard, Vice President of Hyatt Hotels Europe, joined John O’Sullivan, Chairman of Hodson Bay Group for the announcement of Hyatt Hotel Corporation’s first Hyatt hotel in Ireland – a 234-bedroom luxury hotel in Dublin’s Liberties to open in March 2019. Also joining the celebrations at Hodson Bay was a delegation from Chicago (the home of Hyatt Hotels) led by the Toni Preckwinkle, the President of the Cook County Board, Chicago. Ms. Preckwinkle’s visit to Ireland took in a visit to Hodson Bay as part of a strategic alliance between Cook County, Chicago and Co. Roscommon. Cook County, which includes the City of Chicago, is the United States’ second largest county with a population of 5.2 million residents. Speaking at the event, Jason Ballard said:

“This is a day we were looking forward to for some time. Identifying the right partner for the Irish market was a strategic priority for me and the Hyatt Board of Directors. And we’re absolutely thrilled that we’ve finalised a franchise agreement with Hodson Bay Group, with an amazing reputation and a culture that fits perfectly with Hyatt’s core values”. Denis Naughten, Minister for Communications, expressed his delight, saying: “Hodson Bay Group is one of the leading Hospitality companies in Ireland, and attracting Hyatt to the Irish market is testament to its reputation and track record”. The hotel will be situated in The Liberties area in the heart of Dublin. This location, which has been inhabited for over 1,000 years is the oldest part of Dublin and is currently experiencing a complete regeneration as part of Dublin City Council’s plans to create a centre of culture and heritage for the city.

Ireland West Airport this week welcomed the announcement of funding to the amount of €2.3m from the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport. The funding is provided to support critical Safety and Security Projects under the Regional Airports Programme 2015-2019. The Programme provides for Exchequer support for critical safety and security projects to be carried out at the airport in 2018. The funding is the first phase of a 2-year programme of capital projects to be completed at the airport. Arthur French, Chairman, Ireland West Airport said “We welcome this announcement of funding by Minister Shane Ross, which will assist the airport in undertaking important safety and security related projects including phase 1 of the rehabilitation and complete overlay of the airport’s main runway, upgrading of Hold Baggage Screening equipment and critical air traffic control upgrades as well as enhancements to our Customs investigation/search facilities. “We acknowledge the continued support from Government and we look forward to continuing to work closely with Minister Ross, Minister Michael Ring, regional and local government representatives and our local authority partners and stakeholders in continuing the support the Airport’s growth and development plans as part of the recently announced 10-year National Development Plan”. Senator Maura Hopkins welcomed the funding, saying: “It is extremely positive that €2.3 million has been allocated by Government to Ireland West Airport, Knock for critical Safety and Security Projects. “This funding is evidence of the Government’s commitment to support enhanced safety, security and development-related projects at Ireland West Airport, Knock”.

CBS Roscommon students look through Rosc Chomáin 2018 at the recent launch of the Transition Year magazine.

Dublin star and guest speaker, Philly McMahon, signs a copy of Rosc Chomáin – 2018 at the recent launch of the CBS Transition Year magazine.

Dubs star Philly launches CBS magazine Dublin football legend, motivational speaker and author, Philly McMahon spoke to TY students and their families last week at the launch of the school’s magazine Rosc Chomáin 2018 – written and edited by this year’s Transition Year classes. Philly spoke honestly to the students about his own experiences, in particular the loss of his older brother to drug addiction in 2012. He recounted how this event motivated his decision to make choices everyday which would positively influence both his own life and the lives of others. He told them that playing and excelling at football provided him

with confidence and a sense of purpose. Students heard how his life experiences spurred him on to excel both in sport and in business, and helping him to secure three AllIreland medals and his own successful businesses. In a very open and witty address, he urged all students in attendance to make a conscious decision to be positive, help others and do their best in whatever path they choose. The Dublin footballer was glowing in his praise of the Transition Year students and the work they had undertaken on the magazine and other initiatives throughout the year.

School principal, Ms. Gallagher, also praised the Transition Years for their efforts throughout the year. “The magazine offers the opportunity to chronicle some of the developments within the school throughout the year, and allows us to relive some of the successes we have achieved in that time such as engagement in sports, the arts, school trips and out of class activities – all of the extra-curricular activities which allow us to build the qualities of determination, commitment, courage, compassion and enterprise that we value as a school are contained within TY co-ordinator Michael Casey, Deputy Principal Gerry McGarry and Principal Fiona Gallagher pictured with Philly McMahon at the launch of the TY magazine in CBS Roscommon recently. its page”.

IzzyB’s ‘Away with the Fairies’ final farewell

Izzy B pictured with her mother Laura on her first day in school in Strokestown last September.

The final farewell festival for IzzyB’s ‘Away with the Fairies’ will take place on June 9th and 10th, and the two-day event will feature a magical children’s parade, street party, live music and fireworks as well as the fairy and pirate day in Strokestown Park House. This is the fifth and final year of the event which was initiated by the family and friends of childhood cancer survivor, Isobel (Izzy) Cullinan from Strokestown. Last year approximately 3,000 adults and children attended IzzyB’s Fairy Day, helping to create awareness and raise muchneeded funds for Childhood Cancer Foundation, which works closely with St. John’s Ward at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

Strokestown GC raises €1,100 for IzzyB Strokestown Golf Club was delighted to be associated with IzzyB’s ‘Away With The Fairies’ Children’s Cancer Foundation fundraiser last weekend. The club would like to thank all who played and donated to this very worthy cause. Special thanks to Laura Cullinan and Barry Hogan, representing IzzyB’s and Child Cancer Foundation. The amount raised was €1,100. Laura is pictured receiving the cheque from Strokestown Golf Club members.

Over the past four years Fairy Day has raised in excess of €72,000 to support projects and services for children fighting cancer around Ireland. ‘Izzy’ is a daughter of Laura O’Rourke Cullinan and former Meath footballer, John Cullinan. “The inspiration for Fairy Day is my daughter Isobel Cullinan, who was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumour in February 2014, a form of kidney cancer, at 21 months old. While she was successfully treated, unfortunately a year to the day of her last treatment, on the 12th of May 2015, Isobel relapsed with two tumours on her left lung. After a lengthy battle she is now cancer-free and will complete her first year of primary school this June. This will coincide with the

completion of Fairy Day and the next chapter of my little hero’s life,” said Izzy’s mother Laura. Laura explained why 2018 will be the final farewell festival. “We are so grateful to everyone for supporting Fairy Day over the past four years and for all the help in raising such a fantastic amount of money for children fighting cancer. “However, Isobel is six years of age now and we don’t want her to be defined by her diagnosis, she needs to be able to grow up away from the limelight of Fairy Day. We sincerely hope that people understand and accept that. “Unfortunately, we don’t know the long-term effects of childhood cancer or what the future holds for Isobel. The best way I can describe it is that you constantly live with the threat, however we must learn to live with this and protect our girls,” said Laura. The Fairy Farewell Festival begins on Saturday, June 9th at 8 pm with a street party on Bawn Streen in Strokestown which will feature live music from The Riptide

IzzyB and her sister Alex with mum Laura at Fairy Day 2017.

Movement’s lead singer, Malachy Tuohy, among others. Saturday will also feature a magical children’s parade and a fireworks display over Strokestown. Admission is free but donations on the night are welcome. The final IzzyB’s Away with the Fairies, Pirate and Fairy party will take place in Strokestown Park House’s woodland and gardens and there are a wide range of activities on offer including the Irish Fairy Door Company, appearances from Star Wars friends Emerald Garrison, performances from Youth

Ballet West, Art and Crafts and lots more fun. Entry is just €10 for children, €35 for a family of 4 or more and adults and under 2s are free. Proceeds from this year’s IzzyB’s Away with the Fairies Farewell Festival will be in aid of: the Childhood Cancer Foundation; The Sick Children’s Fund, to assist funding of practical supports for families affected by illness in the local Roscommon community and Strokestown community-based children’s organisations, dedicated to enhancing the lives of children.

Slimmers shed clothes to raise pounds for charity! Generous slimmers across Boyle and Roscommon have raised €4,500 for charity by donating the clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of and know they’ll no longer need. 150 bags of clothes, shoes and accessories have been collected as part of the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw, held at the Boyle and Roscommon Wednesday morning Slimming World groups. The bags will be donated to Irish Cancer Society shops in the area as part of the national fundraising drive being run by the weight-loss organisation. Slimming World also aims to raise awareness of how keeping a healthy weight can reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer. Each of the filled bags is worth around €30 to the charity. Tracy, who runs the Boyle and Wednesday Roscommon morning Slimming World groups, is delighted to have raised so much money for charity. “I can’t quite believe how many bags we managed to collect – I knew my members were amazing but I didn’t expect such an incredible level of effort! Taking them to local Irish Cancer Society shops was a real workout in itself but so worth it. To raise such a phenomenal amount for a charity that does so much to beat cancer is amazing. “When my members lose weight – together they’ve lost 425 stone since January! – I see more than just a physical transformation. Above all, I see their confidence bloom. Many go from being nervous and shy and very uncomfortable with the way they look, to confident, healthy and happy individuals with a new lease of life and a twinkle in their eye. “They learn to remove feelings of guilt around food, and instead feel empowered by all the ‘Free Food’ they can enjoy on Slimming World’s healthy eating plan ‘Food Optimising’. Through Food Optimising, they learn not just to change the way they feel about themselves, but also to change the way they think about food by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, and the weight soon falls off without them ever feeling like they are on a ‘diet’. There is no diet; it’s a lifestyle change! “ Anyone who would like to find out more about Slimming World is invited to get in touch with Tracy King, who runs the Roscommon morning group every Wednesday at 9.30 am at Gleeson’s Restaurant & Rooms and also the Boyle group at the Spool Factory every Thursday at 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm. You can call Tracy on 086-3891600.

We need to talk about violence towards women. We need to make sure every woman living in this country (and in this county) is safe. We need to examine the way in which (some) men act towards women and we need to do it as a matter of urgency. I only say this readers because, as you are aware, over the past few weeks two young women have lost their lives in the most violent situations imaginable. Jastine Valdez, a 24-year-old woman, was snatched off the street in broad daylight in the picture postcard town of Enniskerry, County Wicklow in a scene reminiscent of the movie Taken, and tragically murdered. This horrific

act occurred in the same week a 14-year-old child, Ana Kriegel, was allegedly sexually assaulted and savagely murdered in Dublin. A 13-year-old boy, (himself a child) has been charged with this most heinous of crimes. Now, while both of these grisly and harrowing incidents occurred far from our beautiful, and, let me state, safe county, and while occurrences such as these are highly rare and isolated, we need to address the issue without delay. It’s not my intention to alarm any woman, and while at the time of writing, no link between Jastine’s alleged kidnapper/murderer Mark Hennessy has been

established, just take a look at these statistics and you’ll see that, since Women’s Aid began collating data around femicide back in 1996, nearly 90 per cent of the 216 women who have been murdered knew their killers. Now while this is very unsettling, (and regular readers will know I was violently attacked by an individual I’d known since I was 15 years old), we, as women, cannot have our lives governed by these facts, and we shouldn’t fear men, the majority of whom do not pose any threat to us whatsoever; but we can be more aware and more security conscious. As a direct response to both of these tragic murders,

and to give us a ‘fighting chance,’ MMA fighter Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has offered free self-defence classes to women. So maybe that’s all we need ladies, a fighting chance, some sort of tactic that allows us to think fast, react differently and hopefully give us a window of escape. You see, the wouldbe attacker/kidnapper will always have the upperhand because he’ll depend heavily on the element of surprise. However, if we are always aware of our surroundings and learn useful techniques by attending local selfdefence classes or indeed by chatting with our local Garda Síochána’s crime prevention

Should we be worried about BreastCheck? Is the clinical director of BreastCheck a bit of an alarmist, or does she have a valid point when she says the future of our national breast screening programme is at risk? I mean, it’s a bit unusual to have an eminent Professor like Ann O’Doherty openly disclosing, in such an alarming (and public) manner, that she’s concerned litigation costs will get so high, they’ll actively threaten the wonderful BreastCheck programme. Now while I do understand the threat of litigation is always hanging like a dark spectre, this type of scaremongering really concerns me, especially as I’m a woman whom, like others, depends heavily on this excellent programme; which by the way, is not a diagnostic tool, but by

providing free screening, it’s saving lives through trying to locate early signs and changes that could potentially lead to cancer occurring in the breast, allowing women to undergo vital lifesaving treatment. In light of Prof.

O’Doherty’s concerns, does this mean we should be anxious regarding other health screening programmes being rolled out by the State? Perhaps the so-called ‘Scally Scoping’ inquiry should put every single cancer

screening initiative under scrutiny, examining and dissecting every miniscule, imperceptible threat possible because once again, women’s health and wellbeing could potentially be at risk.

officer (they’re all extremely helpful), we can perhaps feel a little bit more psychologically prepared in our own minds. Remember ladies; whether you live in a big bustling city, a local town or a rural idyll, being aware of your surroundings and knowing some basic self-defence moves will always stand to you. Now I’m not suggesting any woman tries to morph into ‘The Bride’ character from the Kill Bill movies…just learn some technique that’ll render your attacker disoriented long enough for you to escape and seek help. What do ya think ladies… worth a try?

Well done to d’lads

Forgive me readers for I have sinned again! Last week, whilst diligently working away – well, okay, I was festering on the sofa in my distinctly average slippers, t-shirt and leggings, drinking strong coffee, and trying hard to rid my mind of the sarcastic innuendos it kept throwing up to describe the way Dáithí Ó Sé (mis)reads the autocue. Seriously, has this otherwise lovely chappie got a PhD in gibberish? But I digress, however, cue the Mean Girl head tilt, – cos I’m gonna be caustic. What I’m trying to say is I tuned in again momentarily, (while I had my coffee) to ‘Today with Maura and Dáithí’ who were both grating away in voices more irritating than celebrity cook Rachel Allen slaughtering the word butter or should I say ‘baaaattterrrr’. And, as I happened to catch the word ‘Roscommon’ being mentioned, my interest was instantly piqued. I paused d’telly and rewound long enough to catch three mucho handsome local lads modelling some very dapper Debs outfits. So, to Kealan and Michael from Ballaghaderreen and Adam from Boyle, well done to you lads, the three of yez were only massive! You’re all a credit to the mammies who reared yez!

Roscommon People Friday 01 June 2018

WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION All of today’s readings are set in the context of the Passover. The First Reading recalls the old covenant celebrated at Sinai following the first Passover and the Exodus. In sprinkling the blood of the covenant on the Israelites, Moses was symbolising God’s desire in this covenant to make them His family, His “blood” relations. Quoting Moses’ words in today’s Gospel, Jesus elevates and transforms this covenant symbol to an extraordinary reality. In the new covenant made in the blood of Christ, we truly become one with His body and blood. The first covenant made with Moses and Israel at Sinai was but a shadow of this new and greater covenant made by Christ with all humankind in that upper room (see Hebrews 10:1). The Passover that Jesus celebrates with His twelve apostles “actualises,” makes real, what could only be symbolised by Moses’ sacrifice at the altar with twelve pillars. What Jesus does today is establish His Church as the new Israel, and His Eucharist as the new worship of the living God. In offering himself to God through the Spirit, Jesus delivered Israel from the transgressions of the first covenant. And, as we hear in today’s Epistle, by His blood He purified us and made us capable of true worship. God does not want dead works or animal sacrifices. He wants our own flesh and blood, our own lives, consecrated to Him, offered as a living sacrifice. This is the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving that we sing of in today’s Psalm. This is the Eucharist. What we do in memory of Him is to pledge our lives to Him, to renew our promise to live by the words of His covenant, and to be His servants. There is no other return we can offer to Him for the eternal inheritance He has won for us. So let us approach the altar, calling upon His name in thanksgiving, taking up the cup of salvation. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory. com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

FRANK BRANDON ‘Real’ plight for ‘Pool: Karius and Bale…you couldn’t make it up! FRANK BRANDON’S

Exaggeration and sport definitely go hand in hand, and even at low levels of competition, some sporting achievements grow legs, and especially in rugby. Tries by prop forwards, which, in reality, were nothing more than a push and a grunt from a yard or two, eventually involved a couple of 100 yard sprints, several outrageous dummies, before a scoring finish, completed by a flying dive, that would do justice to an Olympic high-diving final. Even in my unremarkable rugby career I once upon a time dropped a goal for Dundalk against Longford, in a Provincial towns cup game, from just about the halfway line, which in fairness was quite a decent kick! In Dundalk at the time, one of the great characters was a fellow called Paddy Boland, who was universally known as ‘the Bowler’, and who had, for some reason, good time for me. Before I left the Co. Louth town, the Bowler would tell anyone who cared to listen that my kick was scored from all of one hundred yards. It is doubtful if it was even half that far, but time and several pints of the

best McArdles ale gave it the extra fifty or so yards. Another time, when I was enjoying a very short football career with Roscommon, Telefis Eireann showed highlights of the Rossies’ league match of 1974 – in which I took part – against the then All-Ireland champions, Cork. A number of our Creggs rugby lads were watching the game in the rugby club in Sligo, and by some miracle, I scored a goal and a couple of points, and so moved by my performance was a member of the audience, a Ballinasloe man who was also a selector with the Connacht junior rugby side, that he announced to all and sundry that I would be playing with the Connacht juniors, and that I, as a scrum-half, had a forty-yard pass. Now, he was totally carried away, because firstly I wasn’t picked for the Juniors, but, more importantly, my maximum pass, even with a gale-force wind helping me, would have been closer to forty feet (some might even say forty inches) than forty yards. All of these things flashed through my mind on Saturday evening as I watched Liverpool’s valiant bid for European honours being dismantled by a

unique take on life ...

“Real Madrid were celebrating their own momentous achievement and Jurgen Klopp and his men were left to dwell on what might have been.”

combination of Mo Salah’s injury, a goal by Gareth Bale that has to be the best ever scored in a Champions League final, and two of the greatest goalkeeping errors of all time, and I thought to myself that no amount of exaggeration can ever come close to the reality of the actual events. Now I have never tried to hide the fact that I am a long-time supporter of Manchester Utd., but for some reason I have never bought into the supposed hatred that exists between Liverpool and Utd. I actually have a high regard for the Merseyside Reds, and I was definitely not amongst the Utd. fans who hoped for a Madrid victory.

Now because we had such a wonderful couple of years with Ronaldo, I would still have a soft spot for him, but as I settled down to watch the final, I really wasn’t bothered as to who would win, and all I was hoping for was a match worthy of the occasion. And so the stage was set for a great game, and for the first half hour or so, it looked as if Liverpool were by far the better team. They had the muchvaunted Madrid men chasing shadows. Then everything changed when the wonderful Mo Salah went off injured – and from there to the finish the game had a totally different feel. And yet Madrid were doing nothing to suggest they were

capable of winning their three-in-a-row, until the Liverpool goalie, Karius, made the first of two unbelievable mistakes that nothing could prepare him or the supporters or the management team for. The two errors he made will never be forgotten by any of the millions of people who saw them, and as I say, the enormity of the mistakes can never be exaggerated. My immediate reaction is to be sorry for Karius, and I genuinely hope he can get over the terrible personal disappointment that he suffered, and maybe he can still have a decent career, but probably not in Liverpool. And then we had the Bale overhead kick that was just sensational, and all of a sudden, and totally undeservedly, Real Madrid were celebrating their own momentous achievement and Jurgen Klopp and his men were left to dwell on what might have been. I like Klopp, and I was proud to see him singing with a group of supporters at six o’clock the next morning –definitely my type of manager. I for one believe he will conquer England and Europe in the next few years.

A hero amidst the horror The brutal murders of Jastine Valdez, Ana Kriegel and Cameron Reilly in the last few weeks have both shocked and horrified the nation, and begs the question as to what kind of society we have become. All three incidents resulted in three young, innocent lives being lost in the most appalling circumstances, but I have to say that the possibility that Cameron Reilly was actually killed in front of a number of witnesses, male and female, who watched as he was strangled to death, and did nothing to prevent it, and have kept their mouths shut since, is just mind-boggling. If it is true, then I sincerely hope the Gardai can get to the bottom of it and

ensure that everyone there pays the price for their actions – or in this case their inactions. Compare that to the heroism displayed by Mamoudou Gassama, the 22-year-old illegal immigrant in Paris, when he scaled a four-storey apartment building with his bare hands to save a four-year-old child from falling to a certain death, without any thought for his own safety. How good to know that in a world that seems to have less and less regard for morals, or human goodness, there is still an odd one out there that can restore some faith in human nature – I am delighted to see that the French have acknowledged the young man’s magnificent deed

by making him a citizen, offering him a job with the Fire Brigade and arranging a private meeting with the French Michael D., President Emmanuel Macron. As they say over there Bien joue – that’s ‘well done’ in French.

And finally…

Finally for this week, our own First Lady out here in Creggs – Bina Harris – tells me that the distribution of the proceeds of the Barrie Harris Walk will take place in Mikeen’s on Saturday, 9th of June at 10 pm, and there will be music, all kinds of goodies, and a bit of craic. Everyone is invited. In this area, the Barrie Harris Walk is

by far the biggest and best fundraiser, and each year contributes hugely to several local and indeed national and international charities, and the walk itself has become such an important event that people travel from all over the country to take part each St. Stephen’s Day. So make a date in your diary and head to Mikeen’s on Saturday, 9th of June, and we’ll see you there for a few pints and a bit of fun – might even get a song from the legendary Danny Burke.

Till next week, Bye for now!

The final South Roscommon singing session before the summer break takes place in Murray’s, Knockcroghery, on this Saturday, 2nd of June. Special guest on the night will be Galway singer/ songwriter Bernadette Mulligan. A relative newcomer to the singing circuit, Bernadette first started singing publicly at the singing circle in the Crane, Galway. “I love singing with people like myself who are just out for craic, the fun

and company”, she says. “I started song-writing when I saw the picture of the Syrian baby on the beach. I knew I had to do something to show our horror as to what was going on. A friend asked me if he could record it for his Christmas album. I was delighted that someone liked my song which gave me the encouragement to continue writing. “Most of my songs are about social awareness and are hard-hitting with a couple more being light-

hearted. I have also written a song about my beloved city of Galway. The encouragement from the singing circles has been wonderful. I especially feel honoured to be asked to be your special guest in Knockcroghery and am looking forward to meeting you all again”. And we very much look forward to having Bernadette back with us again, this time as our special guest. It all kicks off around 9.30 pm and admission is free.

Helping households to recycle better! The Irish Waste Management Association is joining forces with Repak and recyclinglistireland.ie to help households recycle better. Nearly 900,000 homes will be getting a free, specially designed bin hanger which displays easily understood information on the type of waste to be put into each household bin. The bin hanger is being distributed by IWMA members who collect 75% of all household waste in the country. The bin hanger is also being emailed by the IWMA household waste collection companies to their customers and is available on www.iwma.ie; www.repak.ie and www.recyclinglistireland.ie It is hoped the initiative will help homeowners become more familiar with what can and cannot be recycled and that it will also help with reducing contamination across the various bins. Approximately 87,000 tonnes of non-recyclable material end up in the recyclable bin every year.

SICK AS A PARROT/OVER THE MOON ROSCOMMON & DISTRICT LEAGUE NEWS

Dooner’s weekend predictions As predicted here last week, Premier Division champions St. Peter’s are just two games away from a wonderful treble following wins over Ballymoe FC and Moylough ’79 in the semi-finals of the Premier Division Cup and Challenge Cup respectively last weekend. They were made to battle all the way in both games and will now face Boyle Celtic in the Premier Division Cup final this Sunday in Lecarrow before taking on the winners of this week’s Challenge Cup semi-final between Ballinasloe Town and St. John’s the following weekend. Elsewhere, Hodson Bay conceded their promotion/ relegation play-off to Dysart, who retain their place in the Premier Division for next season. Meanwhile, Cam Celtic

Horses for Courses

are going up to Division One following their 2-0 win over CP Ajax. The Roscommon & District Football League and People Sport wish Dysart’s Tommy Cormican all the best as he hangs up his whistle following a distinguished career as a referee. Tommy officiated at all levels, including three Connacht Finals. He was also a member of the Irish Soccer Referees Society Roscommon branch for 32 years, where he held the roles of chairman and secretary. Best wishes for your retirement Tommy! Ballinasloe Town has been named as one of eight clubs nominated for the prestigious FAI Club of the Year award. They’ll be hoping to cap a memorable week by reaching the Challenge Cup Final this Friday evening.

RDFL Challenge Cup Semi-Final (8 pm) At Lecarrow: Ballinasloe Town v St. John’s Athletic I’ve written off St. John’s before and been wrong but it’s hard to see past the experience of Ballinasloe Town at this stage of a major cup competition. Prediction: Ballinasloe Town RDFL Second Division Cup Final (8 pm) At Kilkerrin: Glen Celtic v Moylough ‘79 Moylough ’79 showed a lot of grit and determination last weekend against St. Peter’s and are favourites to complete the double this weekend. Racing in Ireland today is on the flat at Fairyhouse starting at 5.50 pm and not even a bumper in sight. Tomorrow the action is the first of a 2-day meeting over the sticks in the sunny southeast at Tramore tapes away at 5.40 pm and 5.45 pm on Saturday. On Saturday, flat patrons are provided for at Navan away at 1.15 pm. Sunday sees all national hunt fare at neighbouring Kilbeggan with tapes away for the first at 2.30 pm and the first of a 2-day meeting in Kerry at Listowel on the flat stalls opening at 2.10 pm. Listowel race again on Monday over the sticks and the flat action is on at Gowran Park. Another classic weekend, this time across the small pond in Britain with the Oaks and Derby at Epsom. Friday sees the fillies classic and the Group 1 Coronation Cup. In the Oaks, O’Brien does not run Magical but still has five runners as he seeks to win the Oaks for a seventh time with a team headed by Magic Wand and Forever Together, who were first and second respectively in the Cheshire Oaks, Bye Bye Baby, Flattering and I Can Fly complete the quintet. The home team is headed by Charlie Appleby’s 1000 Guineas 4th Wild Illusion, now favourite, Give And Take, Perfect Clarity and Ejtyah completing the field. Irish Derby and unbeaten since, with Dettori aboard looks unbeatable. The Derby, for colts and fillies, is on Saturday. Ballydoyle have seven of 14 in the Derby with Dermot Weld the only other Irish trainer represented with Hazapour for who he has booked Frankie Dettori. Saxon Warrior looks the pick of O’Brien’s, but Weld’s horse and John Gosden’s Roaring Lion won’t be far away. The going at the moment is looking likely to be good to soft at best. Order Of St. George completed a three in-a-row win in the Listed Saval Beg Levmoss Stakes last Friday at Leopardstown. Athlone jockey Rory Cleary completed a double on James Barrett’s For Pleasure and Johnny Murtagh’s Beach Wedding in the final 2 races. Ken Condon produced 25/1 outsider Romanised to deliver a shock in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday. The Holy Roman Emperor colt gave his jockey Shane Foley his 2nd classic beating the Aidan O’Brien Ballydoyle trained duo US Navy Flag and Gustav Klimt 2¼l and 1¼l. On Sunday, Jessica Harrington’s Alpha Centauri gave her trainer her first classic in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh. On good ground the filly, under Colm O’Donoghue, reeled in Aidan O’Brien’s Could It Be Love with O’Brien’s well backed favourite Happily only third.

Looking back to last September and both of these sides were expected to be battling for major honours at the business end of the season. Champions St. Pe-

ter’s, however, have been on another level and will be expected to complete a Premier Division double this weekend. Prediction: St. Peter’s FC

Ballydoyle got compensation in the other Group 1 race on the card as Lancaster Bomber led all the way to beat Cliffs Of Moher by 2l in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Roger Varian’s British raider Defoe finished 3rd another 1½l back.

General News Great to see Pat Smullen on the TV coverage of the Guineas meeting and his upbeat positive approach as he continues his recovery from serious illness. His recovery is going as expected and he has reached his first goal which was to support the stable on Guineas weekend. Onwards and upwards Pat with best wishes from the column.

Hard to believe that the 2017/18 has reached its final weekend with two meetings in Kinsale, Saturday at 3 pm and Sunday at 5 pm, and at Ballingarry between Birr and Borrisokane, Sunday and Monday, both off at 2 pm. Barry O’Neill holds a lead of 9 over Derek O’Connor in the rider’s championship and will be very hard to catch. In the ladies’ race Liz Lalor is 6 clear of

Maxine O’Sullivan and in the novice riders competition Sean O’Keeffe leads on 11 but could be caught by Shane Fitzgerald 2 behind on 9.

Competition Time Andrew Mannion, Roscommon, John Michael Ahern, Ballinalack and Mary Kelly, Creggs all knew that it was Timmy Murphy who retired and are off to Kilbeggan on Sunday. Two sets of bonus tickets go to Kathleen Kelly and Margaret Egan, Ballinlough best of Irish luck to all. Last chance to win 3 pairs of tickets for Roscommon on the 11th and 12th of June compliments of Michael Finneran and all we want to know is which of the Irish Classics took place at the Curragh last Saturday? Answers please on a postcard to The Roscommon People, Abbey Street Roscommon or by e-mail to tomred17@ gmail.com by 12 pm Wednesday the 6th and don’t forget to include your name, address and a contact phone number with all competition entries. Tickets will have to be collected in the office in Abbey Street.

SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER

@dan_dooner

Stormy times ahead in international waters THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner There was a brief moment of hope on Monday night when the live images from the Stade de France mercifully disappeared from our screens amid a Parisian thunderstorm. Unfortunately, it proved to be just temporary respite from what had up to then been a very one-sided international friendly match between France and the Republic of Ireland. Hosts France looked slick at times and should reach the latter stages of this summer’s World Cup; such is the embarrassment of riches at Didier Deschamps’ disposal.

On the other hand - no Thierry Henry pun intended - the future of Irish football looks as bleak as Monday’s weather forecast for the north of France. The first half in particular was extremely difficult to watch with the white shirts “enjoying” less than 20% possession. The second half was a slight improvement but mostly on account of the high number of substitutions and the accumulation of rainwater on the playing surface. The sad and perhaps inevitable fact is that Ireland will struggle to reach the dizzying heights of 2016 again, unless of course there is massive improvement at senior level in the immediate future. The basic skills of soccer have been noticeable by

their absence in recent years while the team looked completely clueless in the French half on Monday night. Heart and determination is all well and good but against the best teams in world football you need to be able to play football too. If Monday night in Paris is anything to go by, we could be sailing into rough international waters in the coming years. Looking to the immediate future and with Wales and Denmark in our League of Nations group, the first speed bumps on a long road to Euro 2020, it may be quite some time before we see the Green Army’s supporters entertaining, and bemusing, the locals at a major international tournament again.

Stormy times ahead? The Republic of Ireland looked out of their depth in Paris last Monday night.

People’s champions of the week St. Dominic’s retained the U-12 Spring League Division 1 title with a convincing win over a strong Clann na nGael side in Kiltoom last Friday evening. St. Dominic’s were in ruthless form and went in 0-14 to 0-6 up at half-time. The second half was quite competitive with Clann na nGael coming into it as the game went on. The standard of football on display from both teams was of the highest quality with St. Dominic’s running out winners on a scoreline of 0-21 to 0-11. Scorers - St. Dominic’s: Cian Duggan 0-8 (2 frees), Ruairi Kilcline 0-4, Conor Dowling 0-3, Daniel Tiernan 0-2, Donal Dawson 0-2, Thomas Cotton 0-1, Seanie McDermott 0-1. Clann na nGael: James Doherty 0-4 (2 frees), Kevin Jordan 0-3, Brian Finneran 0-1, Destiny Ezanna 0-1, Conor Naughton 0-1

Open Week We begin our round-up at Athlone Golf Club, where the committee chose a fantastic few days to host their Open Week it must be said. It continues until Monday. The Mixed Foursomes team were beaten by Roscommon last Wednesday while Celeste O’Regan won the first Major of the year when she took the Ladies’ Committee Prize last week with a great score of 78 nett. Tom Campion, meanwhile, won the AWGS with 31 points. To Boyle next, where the men’s 12-hole Stableford, which was played last Thursday, was won by Vincent Egan with a score of 27 points. Vincent just about edged out Michael Gilmartin and Lewis Shaw, who both finished with 26 points.

Other winners in Boyle included Niall Kearney, who won the Boyle Courthouse fundraiser with 38 points; Gerry O’Dowd who took home the Bart Moran Cup with 63 nett and Moira Egan who won the Dr Niamh Nangle Cup. Our last stop for this week is at Roscommon, where John McHale won the men’s 18-hole singles with 41 points last Sunday. Des Dowd (41 points) was second, David Hill (36) took gross and Oliver Hannon (41) finished third. The Junior Prize went to Simon Walker. The recent Senior’s competition was won by Charlie McDonnell with 41 points with Ollie Hannon in second on 40. The Senior Ladies’ was won by M Kennedy with M Brennan in second place and the Ladies’ Singles was won by Paula Keane with Sinead Benedetti in second.

Touch Rugby

First tournament! It was a historic day for Ireland’s newest touch rugby club, Athlone Touch Rugby, on Saturday last as they travelled to their first ever tournament in Wicklow RFC. Athlone began the day with a baptism of fire with back-toback games against two strong Dublin clubs, Donnybrook and Clontarf before taking on Belfast Warriors and Westport. Though Athlone suffered four defeats, the team gave a good account of themselves in their first ever tournament. Overall it was a great experience but a steep learning curve for Athlone and while the talent and desire is there, it is a case of increasing the knowledge and experience of the game by taking part in more competitions.

Pictured is the Athlone Touch Rugby team which travelled to Wicklow RFC for its first ever tournament recently. Back row (L-r): Kyra Wildy, Anthony Mangan, Nigel So, Rory Silke, Denis O’Connor. Front row (L-r): Jess Menton, Gemma Donohoe, Shane Donohoe, Kieran Abrook, Brendan Wilkins, Paul Gavin.

Best for Athlone were Shane Donohoe whose pace gave every defence problems and Nigel So. Kyra Wildy also put in a massive shift especially in de-

fence as did Gemma Donohoe. Athlone are still recruiting throughout the season and anyone, male or female, is welcome to attend training on Monday

nights at 6.30 pm in Buccaneers RFC. Check out Athlone Touch Rugby on Facebook or contact Denis O’Connor on 0857742751.

Seamus Duke ON SPORT

Confident Hyde will be final venue The controversy over the possible venue for the Connacht final is given loads of space elsewhere this week but personally I am glad that the matter has come to a head. I spent over 20 years on the Dr Hyde Park Committee many years ago and have always taken a special interest in what’s going on there. The history of the venue is complicated for sure but since the Roscommon County Board took over the ownership of the park the only substantial work done there was on the pitch, and that was paid for by Croke Park. There has to be a renewed commitment to improve the facilities at Dr Hyde Park at County Board level as it has fallen behind under many headings in recent years. Priority has been given to develop a training centre for county teams at Runnabracken but it is also possible to be working away in Dr Hyde Park as well. The history of the recent troubles of the ground and why we have arrived at the current situation are explained in detail elsewhere.

Leinster SHC Round Robin: Wexford v Galway in Wexford on Saturday at 5 pm Speaking after last Saturday’s semi-final win over Leitrim, Kevin McStay was adamant that any Connacht Final involving Roscommon and Galway would be played at Dr Hyde Park.

If Galway win on Sunday I hope that common sense prevails and that the game goes ahead. If they have to make it an all-ticket 18,000 capacity game this time then so be it. There would not be too many more at a Roscommon v Galway match anyway. There has to be flexibility on the part of the Connacht Council and the GAA. I’m absolutely sure that the last thing Kevin McStay wants to be doing is getting involved in a controversy like this in the build-up to

such a big game but I admire him for doing so. Too many people in the GAA are afraid of their lives to put their heads above the parapet and take a stand. It will be solved now one way or the other. I am confident that if it is Galway v Roscommon the game will be played at Dr Hyde Park. I have to say I’m amazed that the issue was not covered at all on The Sunday Game. They had plenty of other stuff on last Sunday night but it was a strange decision not to mention the Connacht Final venue.

U-20s and hurlers out on Saturday The Roscommon U-20s will make their championship bow at Dr Hyde Park on Saturday evening and hopes will be high that they can qualify to meet Galway a week later in the semi-final. The team have been training hard under Shane Curran and his selectors and they have played a number of challenge games. Ciaran Lennon will be a big loss but Sligo are also without their three best players who were all used in the senior championship game against London recently. At home in Dr Hyde Park it is reasonable to expect a Roscommon win. The county hurlers are also in action on Saturday against Mayo in Athleague. This is a vital winnertakes-all game as the losers will be in a relegation play-off to see who will be going down to the Nicky Rackard Cup. There hasn’t been much between the sides over the years and Roscommon were much improved against Wicklow in their last outing. It’s hard to see Ciaran Comerford’s men winning, but at home a shock win for the Rossies might be on the cards.

Huge following in Carrick It was remarkable to see the strength of the Roscommon following in Carrick last Saturday evening. There was a decent crowd of 8,265 and at least 70% of that crowd were Roscommon fans. The game is reported in detail elsewhere this week but it was a poor spectacle as Leitrim tried to keep the score down. They prevented any goals being scored but I wonder does a 14 point defeat represent any progress in the space of a year? Last year the gap was 17 points. Unless they get a good draw they will be out of the championship in a few weeks’ time and that’s it for another year until next February. They are training since last January. It’s hard to justify it really.

Championship Watch

Wexford will be preparing a very warm welcome for the All-Ireland champions on their home patch after recording two wins out of two. This will be a huge test for the champions who will be put to the pins of their collars to get out of this one with a win. They may just have enough. Prediction: Galway

Munster SHC Round Robin: Cork v Limerick on Saturday in Cork at 7 pm What a game this promises to be: Limerick were terrific against Tipperary in their opening game. Cork faded in the second half against Tipp last week. They are two really talented sides. Impossible to call it but maybe Cork at home - just! Prediction: Cork

Ulster SFC Semi-Final: Fermanagh v Monaghan on Sunday in Omagh at 2 pm The cat is out of the bag after Monaghan’s superb display against Tyrone. Rory Gallagher has done a great job with his native Fermanagh but Monaghan have too many big guns and should win with a bit to spare. Prediction: Monaghan

Connacht SFC Semi-Final: Galway v Sligo on Sunday in Pearse Stadium at 3.30 pm

A weekend of shocks in Leinster It was an extraordinary weekend in the Leinster football championship. It’s hard to believe that Kildare and Meath have been knocked out by Carlow and Longford respectively. Those two results alone are why there will never be a credible ‘B’ championship in Gaelic football. Ask any Carlow GAA person this week and they will tell you that it was worth the 65-year wait to beat Kildare. Similarly, Longford people have waited 36 years to beat Meath and they will look on that win as one of their greatest. It’s what GAA fans live for. It may be an indication of the very poor state of football in Leinster but in the last four there are two Division Four teams, a

Division Three team and Dublin – incredible! Elsewhere, it looks like a Donegal v Monaghan final will happen in Ulster. In Munster Cork look like they might be getting their act together finally. They gave Tipperary a good beating last Saturday night, which was unexpected. In the hurling championship there was more drama in the Cork v Tipperary game. It was breath-taking stuff especially in the second half. The other games were not as good but the intense programme of games with counties playing almost every weekend is proving too much for some. It’s an amateur game after all. I suspect that it will all be reviewed when the dust settles.

Karius’ ‘dodgy’ night in Kiev

Loris Karius pictured at the final whistle following Liverpool’s Champions League Final defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev last Saturday evening.

It was a bizarre Champions League Final. One of the greatest goals ever seen in a major final, and two of the biggest goalkeeping howlers ever witnessed. You wouldn’t see them at an U-7 game. Karius was a ‘dodge’ earlier in the season but his mistakes seemed to have stopped. He picked a bad game to resume his poor judgement. It was not a good night for Liverpool with Ramos getting away with a cynical foul on Salah which meant that the Egyptian had to go off. But Liverpool did very well to get as far as they did. If they buy a good goalkeeper they will be back again next season.

Sligo players and supporters must be cheesed off at all the talk about a Galway v Roscommon Connacht final. However, in Salthill it is hard to see Kevin Walsh’s men not winning handy enough. Then the fun will begin! Prediction: Galway

Munster SFC Semi-Final Kerry v Clare on Sunday in Killarney at 3.30 pm Clare are a decent side and will give a good account of themselves. It won’t be good enough though. Prediction: Kerry

Leinster SHC Round Robin: Dublin v Offaly in Parnell Park on Sunday at 3 pm The losers here are staring down the barrel of demotion from the Leinster SHC in 2019. Offaly are down a number of players through injury and suspension. Dublin look too strong. Prediction: Dublin

Munster SHC Round Robin: Waterford v Tipperary on Sunday in Limerick at 4 pm This is a ‘home’ game for Waterford who went down badly last Sunday. It’s hard to see them winning this against a resurgent Tipp. Prediction: Tipperary

Camogie heroines galore in Tisrara! On a beautiful Wednesday evening, ten teams took part in five different Allianz Cumann na mBunscol camogie finals at Tisrara Community Park. The opening game saw newcomers Curraghboy NS beaten by Runnamoat NS in the inaugural 5-a-side camogie competition. In the Division 4 final, Creggs and Glanduff served up a thriller with the former coming out on top. In the end, a goal from Creggs’ Rachel Beirne sealed the win for the girls in maroon. The Division 3 final was a battle of the black and amber between Fuerty and Tisrara. Fuerty just about came out on top following an epic encounter, with scores from Eva Rodgers, Tara O’Brien and Anna Murray. The Division 2 final was a repeat of last year (sort of) with Gaelscoil De hÍde up against the newly-formed St. Coman’s Wood. This was a very close game with St Coman’s Wood taking an early three-goal lead, before the Gaelscoil staged a brave comeback which just came up short in the end. St. Coman’s Wood’s heroines were captain Jennifer Morris,

Zara Fallon, who scored two goals, and goalkeeper Eve McNeill, who saved her team on more than a few occasions. The County ‘A’ final was also a repeat of last year’s match, with Lisaniskey NS attempting win back-to-back titles, while Ballymurray wanted revenge for last year’s defeat! It was Ballymurray who were victorious this time around with scores from sisters Hannah and Lily Murray and the mercurial Emma Connaughton. Lisaniskey had no answer to their pace, power and skill, despite the best efforts of Hazel Kelly, Ciara Connaughton and Rachel McGann. Michaela Lohan and Iona Hanley also got on the scoreboard for Ballymurray, while for Lisaniskey, Anna Hussey had a fine game, as did Shauna McDermott when introduced. Congratulations to Ballymurray on their deserved win and they assume the mantle of County champions, while Lisaniskey, in a reversal of last year, are now the Division 1 champions. Well done all schools who took part in all the competitions this year.

Connacht U-20 semi-final Roscommon v Sligo on Saturday at Dr Hyde Park at 7 pm  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon’s U-20 team have home advantage when they make their debut in this brand new championship this Saturday. The loss of key players on both sides is a feature of the build-up to the game and the winners will be facing Galway in the Connacht semi-final on Saturday week. The competition in Connacht is knock-out while the equivalent in Munster and Leinster are played on a round robin basis. The Connacht U-20 final will be played as the curtain raiser to the Connacht senior final on June 17th but Roscommon will have to concentrate on this potential banana skin as Sligo have been strong at minor level over the past couple of years and will provide stern opposition. Ciaran Lennon (broken thumb) will be a big loss to Roscommon but Cian McKeon and Aaron Brady are two players who have

seen senior action this year and they will feature on Saturday. There are plenty of other talented young players on the Roscommon panel that can shine in this environment. However, matches being played at this level while the Leaving Cert is on-going seems strange to me but that’s a debate for another day. Sligo used their three best players at this level, Liam

Gaughan, Sean Carabine and Patrick O’Connor in the senior championship game against London recently so that will weaken their hand for this game as they are automatically ruled out. Roscommon, under manager Shane Curran and selectors Eddie Lohan, Padraig Kelly, Padraig Brennan and Colin Canny have been training hard in recent months and they have

played a number of challenge games. Sligo will not be easily beaten as they have a good panel of players available to them. But at home and with those three Sligo players ruled out of their team I expect Roscommon to advance to what will be a very difficult semi-final clash with Galway a week later. Prediction: Roscommon

It’s the last chance saloon for Roscommon hurlers at Athleague on Saturday when Mayo come calling for a vital do or die game in the Christy Ring Cup. The losers here will be staring relegation to the Nicky Rackard Cup in the face and after a poor league campaign, another loss would represent a very poor year for Roscommon’s senior hurlers. In fairness to Ciaran Comerford’s men they were a hugely improved outfit in their loss to Wicklow in round two after the debacle in Newbridge against Kildare. Over recent years there has never been much between Roscommon and Mayo and hopefully that will be the case here although Mayo look a much stronger side this year. Their talisman Keith Higgins will be playing and he is an inspirational presence for them. Roscommon have been depending far too much on the stick of Daniel Glynn for their scores and if they want to have a chance in this game they will need their front men to up the ante. Naos Connaughton has been a threat, but the other forwards will have to get their act together on Saturday. On the basis that Kildare only beat Mayo in injury-time it looks like Mayo may have been unlucky in that game and we saw what happened between Roscommon and Kildare when they met. It would be a memorable win if Roscommon were to pull it off on the day but it looks unlikely. Prediction: Mayo

Your weekend starts here

McStay: ‘We’ll be at the Hyde on June 17th’  SEAMUS DUKE In a strong interview delivered to the media in the aftermath of the Connacht semi-final win against Leitrim, Roscommon manager Kevin McStay said that in the event of the final being a Roscommon v Galway fixture he was adamant that his team would play at Dr Hyde Park and nowhere else. “The Connacht final will be played at Hyde Park. I have no doubt about that. We will certainly be turning up in the Hyde and hopefully there will be someone else to meet us there on the day. We are being very, very absolute about that. “Let’s see what happens next Sunday. If Sligo win it is their choice (of venue) but I’m sure they will come to Dr Hyde Park. It has a superb surface so the match will be in Dr Hyde Park which is terrific,” he said. “Whether that puts the Connacht Council or the GAA at national level in a difficult position doesn’t bother me. I am the manager of the Roscommon senior football team and my responsibility is to the 34 players on the panel, to give them the best chance possible of retaining our Connacht title. My sense is that the game will be at home and as we know home advantage is a big thing in Gaelic

football and for our own supporters and our own set-up,” he added. The Roscommon manager was adamant that the matter was not up for debate and the bottom line is that Roscommon will play the Connacht final at Dr Hyde Park. “The Roscommon senior football team will be in Dr Hyde Park on the 17th of June and whoever we are playing I hope they show up. “People have backed themselves into positions that could have been avoided and there is fault on both sides. “I would have a fantastic relationship with John Prenty (Connacht Council Secretary) over the years and I intend to keep that relationship going. My business is the Roscommon senior football team and the Roscommon GAA family. That’s who I have to stick up for and we would be insisting that there are lots of solutions to this problem and a solution will have to be found. “The bottom line is that we are going to Dr Hyde Park on the 17th of June and nowhere else. Bar of course if Sligo bring us to Castlebar because it’s their choice if they win but I expect that reason will prevail. The Connacht Council don’t need the hassle, Roscommon GAA certainly don’t need it,” he said.

McStay added that it was time to level the playing field for so-called ‘weaker counties’. “There is a narrative out there about weaker counties not getting a fair shake. We saw Wicklow didn’t get the Aughrim gig etc. “Remember two years ago we had to give up home advantage for the Connacht U-21 final and play it in Sligo. Mayo beat us that day and went on to win the All-Ireland. “We had to play a Connacht final replay in Castlebar (2016) with a very young team because we had no pitch at the time and we put our hands up at that stage. But that’s resolved now. You can’t keep pulling stuff out of the bag to knock us back”. According to the manager, Roscommon’s players are backing his stance in terms of the Connacht final venue. “I just met the players and they are delighted to be in their fourth Connacht final in three years. It’s a great achievement for a bunch of young lads. “They are so excited about playing their first Connacht final at home and we had a long talk about this and we couldn’t have that chat until the Leitrim match was over - we had to give them full respect. We are 100% united that this Connacht final will be in Dr Hyde Park,” he concluded.

Devaney looks forward to another decider  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon captain Conor Devaney described last Saturday’s win over Leitrim as “hard going” before turning his focus to this weekend’s other semi-final between Galway and Sligo. “I’m just looking up at the scoreboard there and I never realised that we won by so much. It was a tough game today and it never felt that we were winning easily. Whether it was the heat, or the way they set up, but it was

hard going out there today. But we knew it would be tough but we are glad we got those scores to make it easier. “It’s great to be into another Connacht final. We will watch Sligo and Galway and then we will have two weeks to plan for it. It was great to see the subs that came on doing well and we have been doing that all year and you saw what Cathal (Cregg) did when he came on. It’s so important to have a strong panel,” he said.

Focus turns to final David Murray said he was happy to have come through another Connacht semi-final but was now focussed on preparing for the decider in two weeks’ time. “We are happy to get through today, they frustrated us a lot in the first half the way they set up and they forced us into making some mistakes. But we got a few important scores towards the end of the first half and we pushed on after that. “The lads who came on did very well and it is great to see lads getting championship game time. I have no preference for Galway or Sligo. We have to prepare properly and be ready for it. “It was a strange game today

in that a lot of the Leitrim forwards were down the field in defence. It was frustrating at times and we knew that’s the way they would set up but we got through it. It’s great to be back in another Connacht final but we have to go and win it now,” he concluded.

Supporter’s event at The Hyde Roscommon GAA will host a supporter’s open day event this Saturday (2nd) at Dr Hyde Park from 11 am to 12.30 pm (approximately). The Roscommon senior football team and management will meet with supporters before a light training session and the pre-Connacht Final press event.

Nothing to see here folks, move along now. Roscommon cruised into their third Connacht senior final in a row with the minimum of fuss in this one-sided and at times pedestrian semifinal played on a balmy evening at Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada last Saturday evening. The 8,265 crowd (70% of whom were Roscommon fans) saw the visitors score some super points throughout, and Kevin McStay and his selectors will be very happy to note that no less than 13 players got on the score sheet, including all six starting forwards. But there was precious little excitement throughout as Roscommon were

Pictured Roscommon team that reached this year’s Connacht Senior Football Championship Final. Picture: Andrew Fox

always in control. Leitrim, in an attempt to restrict the Rossies, withdrew at least two and often three forwards to their own 45-metre line, but once Roscommon found their range they just by-passed ‘the blanket’ with some quality scores. It goes without saying that the Connacht final will represent a much more formidable challenge, but there were several positives from this semi-final. Cathal Compton had his finest game in a Roscommon jersey. He was superb throughout and he’s turning into the type of midfield player that the team have been crying out for in recent years. The Murtagh brothers were also in top class

form up front. It may be nit-picking, but I feel there is even more in Diarmuid Murtagh. He has the ability and skillset to become one of the top forwards in the country and he continues to improve. Brian Stack is another young player who is improving all the time; he had a mighty first half. Cathal Cregg has now put his hand up for a starting place in the Connacht final. He kicked four great points in just 20 minutes when introduced as a sub and on form, he is a top class performer. Negatives? Hard to tell when the opposition is so poor, but Roscommon looked vulnerable early on in defence on the rare occasions Leitrim ran at them. Some of Roscommon’s play in the opening half was poor, with the ball given away a number of times but against such poor opposition it was not costly.

In addition, in a game that Roscommon dominated so much, they only produced two clear goal chances and that would also be a worry in higher company. But the team did the job efficiently. There were no injuries and a fourteen-point win in the championship is nothing to be sniffed at any day of the week. In my humble opinion, Roscommon are a stronger team than they were last year and have a great chance of back-to-back titles. Roll on the 17th of June. As for Leitrim, they are making little progress, and one wonders what these annual thrashings are doing for the game in that county. In fact last Sunday their best performers were a few of their subs who at least had a go in the final 10 or 15 minutes but they were hopelessly out of their depth.

Connacht SFC Semi-Final: Roscommon 0-24 Leitrim 0-10 Key Moments Seamus Duke First half The sides shared four points in the opening 8 minutes with Keith Beirne scoring two for Leitrim (1 free) and Diarmuid Murtagh getting Roscommon’s two points (1 free). Roscommon had a lucky escape in the 3rd minute when Jack Heslin’s goal bound shot was cleared off the line by Peter Domican - a rare moment of anxiety for the Rossies. With Leitrim’s 13-man defence strung across the field Roscommon had to shoot from distance but once they found their range the scores started to pile up. Diarmuid Murtagh, Brian Stack and Ciaráin Murtagh all contributed long-range points and by half-time Roscommon led by 8 points. Half-time score: Roscommon 0-10 Leitrim 0-2

Second half Roscommon kicked three wides in a row early in the second half but by the 44th minute they led by 0-13 to 0-2. Sub Darragh Rooney then kicked Leitrim’s first score in over 40 minutes of play.

‘Connacht final is game of our lives’  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon manager Kevin McStay was pleased to have reached yet another Connacht final but admitted Roscommon had an “ocean of work to do” ahead of the provincial showpiece on June 17th. “We are in the final, that’s what today was about. Could we have done better? Yes, of course but Leitrim’s set-up - which I can understand - made life so difficult for us. It seems to be the type of football that the teams from the lower divisions want to play.

TIME ADDED ON…

“Last year, it (the gap between the teams) was 17, this year it’s 14 so what does that system do for them? It must be very frustrating for the Leitrim lads to play that type of system but that’s their choice and I would never tell anyone else how to coach their team. “We have an ocean of work to do. This Connacht final will be the game of our lives to see if we can win two in a row and retain our title and that is the one thing we want to do,” he said. McStay was pleased to have made it through Saturday’s semi-final with no

new injuries to report but was frustrated at his team’s tempo. “We had no injuries today, which was good, and we gave a lot of lads game time. I thought we were pedestrian in the first half and a lot of our forwards were off their game and casual. Leitrim had a little bit of oxygen and that’s what we didn’t want. They had a goal chance early on and if they got that it may have been different. “We made a few adjustments at half-time and the first 15 minutes of the second half was top notch. We played some great football and we put the game to bed nicely.

O’Mahony: ‘Rossies have best forward line in Connacht’ Leitrim selector John O’Mahony praised Roscommon’s forward line before turning his attention to the qualifiers following last Saturday’s semi-final defeat in Carrick. “Our challenge was to close the gap more than it was last year and to a certain extent we did that but we would have liked to have been much closer than it turned out. Roscommon have the best forward line in Connacht and they showed that out there today with their point taking. “From our point of view, the goal

Some lads have put their hands up for the next day no doubt about that. “Remember that Sligo are playing Galway next Sunday. I read last week that Roscommon and Galway were in the Connacht final. You have to respect all teams and jumping ahead of the posse and wondering where finals might be played before the semi-finals was not healthy for us in the build-up to today and it was a difficult environment in which to prepare. But that’s out of the way now thankfully,” he concluded.

chance that we missed was crucial and if we had got that it may have made a difference but it’s hard to strike a balance between keeping it tight at the back and getting scores and one suffered as result of the other. “Roscommon have a match under their belts and they have much bigger tests ahead while we have to concentrate on the qualifiers now. Our lads have made some progress in recent months but we Leitrim selector John have much more to do,” he con- O’Mahony praised Roscommon’s forward line cluded.

Roscommon were always in control. Sub Cathal Cregg was on fire when he came on and he kicked four superb points from play. The Leitrim subs were far more impressive than those they replaced and Damien Moran in particular kicked three tremendous points after he was introduced. Roscommon stayed on top and they scored four of the last five points with Tadgh O’Rourke and John McManus getting in on the act. Final score: Roscommon 0-24 Leitrim 0-10
