The Criminal Law (Defence and the Dwelling) Act 2011 (the Act) came into effect on 13th January 2012. This Act provides that homeowners may use reasonable force to defend themselves against intruders unlawfully in their home. This law also extends these protections to the curtilage of the dwelling i.e. the area immediately surrounding or adjacent to the dwelling which is used in conjunction with the dwelling, other than any part of that area that is a public place. The Act provides that it shall not be an offence for a person who is a lawful occupant of a dwelling, to use reasonable force against another person where he believes the other person has entered or is entering the dwelling as a trespasser for the purpose of committing a criminal act. The force used may only be such as is reasonable in the circumstances: (i) to protect himself or another person present in the dwelling from injury or assault, (ii) to protect his property from theft, destruction or damage, or (iii) to prevent the commission of a crime or to assist a lawful arrest. The Act further provides that a person who uses such reasonable force cannot be sued by a burglar for damages for any injury, loss or damage and will not be guilty of an offence. Under the Act, householders are entitled to use such force as they believe is reasonable for their protection. The use of force shall not exclude the use of force causing death but this is not a licence for unwarranted violence as the force used must be reasonable and justified. Planning refused for Abbeytown development Roscommon County Council last Thursday (12th) refused planning permission for a large housing development at Abbeytown in Roscommon town following objections from the local community. Abbeytown Developments Roscommon had lodged a planning application back in May to demolish the existing two-storey commercial building, which was formerly Mosart Studios and Roscommon Tile Centre.

The developers had proposed building seventeen apartments, three duplexes, fifteen townhouses and a refuse storage building in its place but following objections from more than 40 residents, permission was refused. Residents had objected on the basis of potential traffic congestion, the number of homes proposed for the one-acre site, and a lack of adequate parking.

It’s a long way to Tipperary; Kerry’s no joke either. We arrived in Sneem on Friday evening, staying at ‘The Sneem Hotel’. It’s a long, long drive from Roscommon, but the fabulous scenery makes it all worthwhile. The journey brought us into ‘The Ring of Kerry’ and we ventured into bustling Killarney, the country’s tourism capital. There’s a visible buzz, if a buzz can be visible. On arrival in Sneem, the hotel staff were extremely friendly – and it’s a hotel I’d recommend. Not having been in Sneem before, we had a quick look at the village. “It’s like Balamory” (the town in the popular children’s tv programme) one of the kids said – and so it is. Several of the quaint buildings are very colourfully painted.
Saturday The coastal drive to Valentia Island is pretty spectacular. En route, there’s a lovely summer atmosphere in Waterville, where there are two statues that command your attention. One is of Mick O’Dwyer, perhaps the single greatest GAA personality of them all. How special it must be for this man to live to see a statue dedicated to him (usually the person being paid tribute to has passed on before the unveiling). The other statue is of the trailblazing comedy genius, Charlie Chaplin, who spent many happy summers on holiday in Waterville. On Valentia Island, the locals are friendly and welcoming, and the scenery is beautiful. The island has a rich history which is well worth exploring. On the journey back, we stop at the spectacular Kerry Cliffs, from which you can view Skellig Michael. A walk to the top of the cliffs and a dreamy view of what Mother Nature then offers makes for a breathtaking experience.
Saturday evening It’s Super 8s time in Sneem, but the Sky Sports reception in the otherwise excellent hotel was dodgy, the action from Croke Park fuzzy and frustrating. We had to abandon and relocate to a cosy pub in Sneem village, where the locals were only mildly interested in Roscommon v Tyrone. Early promise from Roscommon was soon replaced by gloom. Enda Smith’s superb goal early in the second half raised spirits, but Tyrone plundered on relentlessly and Roscommon’s Super 8s opener fizzled out badly. Here’s to a much better performance this weekend.
Sunday Today we went to Kenmare,
We encountered a clever entrepreneuer. This ‘One Man and His Goat’ is a tourist attraction in Sneem, Co. Kerry.
where there was a lovely atmosphere. All weekend, this lively town had gone ‘all French’. I subsequently discovered that there’s a large French community living in Kenmare. The locals were celebrating Bastille Day in style, French flags and bunting much in evidence. This was all very timely, given that France were playing in the World Cup Final on Sunday. We spent a few hours doing tourist-type stuff in Kenmare, before switching our focus to the day’s sporting activity: Croker and Russia. It would be unfair to say that pubs and hotels weren’t showing the World Cup Final, but accessing the soccer wasn’t that straightforward. Most places were concentrating on Kerry v Galway in the Super 8s (starting at the same time as France v Croatia) and those that had the World Cup on were crowded, or pretty much insisting that customers order food! We were watching the end of Kilkenny v Limerick in a bar when a group of 12 French fans came in. They pointed to vacant seating and asked if they could watch the soccer, only to be told they’d have to order food! (They were planning to order drinks). There were French people everywhere, and a few Croatians too, and by 4 pm some of them were getting a little panicked, all alarmed at the sight of Pat Spillane filling the space they’d assumed the World Cup Final would occupy. On the street, in the drizzle, French and Croatian fans looked
at us pleadingly and asked: “… where can we see the World Cup Final?” Between us all – Kerry locals and visitors alike – we tried to explain about Damien Comer and David Clifford and black cards and fair shoulder charges and blanket defences and the Super 8s and that this was why so many screens in packed pubs were showing GAA, not the big one from Russia. In the end, after much wandering in and out of establishments by French, Croatians and Irish (us), I think everyone got to see what they wanted to see. We ended up in a busy hotel, one eye on the soccer, one eye on the GAA. Kerry’s defeat to Galway came as a right shock to the locals. As the Rossies, the Croatians and the Kerry aristocrats licked their collective wounds, young French fans drove up and down Kenmare with horns beeping and flags waving…they’d only gone and won the World Cup in Kerry.
Monday morning The ‘filling station’ we stop at this morning is more of a private house with an old garage and rusty fuel pumps. Visually, this place is past its heyday, but it’s quaint and charming. There’s no sign of life, but it appears to be open. After filling fuel, I go up to the garage, but there’s no-one around. Silence reigns. Then the door of the house slowly opens and I can hear words before I see a face. “Money, money, money…” the female voice says.
The voice belongs to a woman of ‘a certain age’ and her ‘money, money, money’ comment had been said in humour (it appears). The woman of the house/filling station is formidable, I suspect. “Nice morning” she ventures next, before informing me that the previous night’s drop of rain had been badly needed. I agree, and hand over the money, money, money. An hour in Sneem…before facing that long drive back to Roscommon. At the entrance to a pretty green area, there’s a sight that requires a ‘doubletake’. A man with a very long beard is sitting on a park bench, holding an animal (pet?) on a lead. It’s a goat! And a mountain goat, at that! We have encountered a clever entrepreneuer. This ‘One Man and His Goat’ is a tourist attraction. Buses full of tourists stop every few minutes in Sneem. Most of the visitors take photos with the man and his (allegedly) Guinness-drinking mountain goat. Donations are gratefully accepted and thrown into a cap at the man’s feet. The goat seems very relaxed. So does the man. “He’s a mountain goat and his horns grow an inch or two every year” the man tells a tourist, opting not to say how much his own impressive beard grows each year.
Monday afternoon Later, we stop in Killarney, which, as every summer, is brimming with tourists, a large number of whom are from the USA. The town is buzzing and there are numerous quaint shops as well as bars, restaurants and those majestic dripping-in-character hotels. I wonder what the Americans make of their President, Mr. Trump, in the news (as ever), this time over his chaotic visit to see Mr. Putin in Helsinki. No doubt there are mixed views (perhaps some supportive) although you have to say that Trump’s post-summit press conference was quite bizarre, even by his standards. Far from ‘Putin the boot in’, more a case of Russian Rollover. Maybe the American tourists have banished Trump from their minds, as they enjoy wonderful Kerry. As our American friends feel the texture of yet more Aran sweaters, two no-nonsense Kerry men stand outside the shop and casually pore over the fall-out of their county’s dismal Super 8s show. “Yerra there’s no point in going to Croke Park and playing like that, they’ll have to do better when they go back for the semi-final”.

Heritage Weekend kicks off in Ballintubber The Heritage Weekend, which kicks off this Friday in Ballintubber, is the highlight of a month-long festival in the area. At 7 pm on Friday evening you can begin the festivities at the Old Schoolhouse where ‘Mysteries of Ancient Irish Star Lore’ will be presented. The official opening of the Heritage Weekend in Ballintubber takes place this Saturday (21st) at the Old Schoolhouse at 12 noon. The opening will be performed by Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice. A great day’s entertainment is promised with all types of arts and crafts, bread-making, churning, face-painting, etc., music, dancing, teas and homebaking, guided tours of the castle and much more. There will also be a talk in the Old Graveyard (11 am) with Mary Timoney, who recently compiled a book relating to the headstones and stonemasons of that era. Guided tours of Ballintubber Castle by Prof. Niall Brady and Prof. Kathryn Maurer and a display of this year’s findings (in Old Schoolhouse) will no doubt prove very popular. On Sunday 22nd, visitors can
experience hay-making, a visit to the Old Hall in Willsgrove, tug o’war, music, dancing and a
few surprises. All are welcome. * See www.ballintubbervillage. com and Ballintubber Tidy

‘Boxer’ Moran to launch Suck Valley Way Adventure A highlight of the month-long Heritage Festival in Ballintubber will be the annual Suck Valley Way Adventure, featuring a three-stage walk and fishing, canoeing, cycling, etc., event! Kevin Moran, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief, will be launching Ballintubber Heritage Weekend – including the Suck Valley Way Adventure – this Sunday. This launch will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at 11.30 am at Clonalis House in Castlerea. On that day (Sunday, 22nd of July), a group of sixty American archeologists, working in Ballintubber, will be canoeing, cycling and walking along the Suck Valley Way. This scenic trip will include breathtaking views of the countryside with ponies galloping along the river! A guide will give a historical overview of the Suck Valley Way. The trip will take place over three different days/stages, going from Clonalis House to Castlecoote House. The three-stage walk will start at 11.30 at Clonalis House to Ballintubber Castle on the 22nd. On the 24th of July at 4 pm the walk will continue from Ballintubber Castle to Donamon Castle. The last stage of the walk will be at 7 pm on the 27th of July from Donamon Castle to Castlecoote House. Participants can choose whether to walk, canoe, or cycle. Previous canoeing trips were relaxing but adventurous. The Suck Valley Way crosses the hidden heartlands of Co. Roscommon and will show the American archeologists the beauty of the countryside and give an understanding of the history of the area. At Clonalis House on July 22nd, starting at 9.30, Inland Fisheries will host a display of various species of fish whose habitat is the River Suck.

Support the Cycle Against Suicide this Saturday Cycle Against Suicide (CAS) will join with the local Roscommon community on Saturday, July 21st to raise awareness of the help and support networks that are available to people across Roscommon that are battling depression, self-harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide. The cycle will also be held in memory of the late Doreen Conlon (Roscommon town) who sadly passed away last year due to an illness. Doreen was regarded as the mammy of the CAS organisation and was hugely respected and loved by all across Ireland. Over 800 people die by suicide on the island of Ireland each year. The power of the cycle and its message ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and It’s absolutely OK to ask for help’ is something that brings families, communities, organisations, schools, individuals and cyclists of all abilities together with a common purpose of ending the cycle of suicide in Ireland today. Organisers of this event are Paul Reynolds
from Cloverhill and Michelle McKiernan from Athlone. Paul said: “We all know someone affected by mental illness. As a young lad growing up in

Roscommon, from the age of 15 I’ve lost eight friends to suicide in a nine-year period. This cycle is a huge opportunity to raise awareness of the many services in the locality available to those who are suffering. “It also inspires conversations around positive mental health and acts as a shining example to the community that no-one should be afraid to seek help or the support of others. This cycle will also be very specially in memory of the much-loved Doreen Conlon”. Commencing from Hannon’s Hotel from 10.30 am, the cycle will travel through Knockcroghery, Kiltoom, Brideswell, Curraghboy and Roscommon town. Please support the cycle by colouring the town and areas in orange for the weekend and getting on your bike. Registrations are now open online at: https://regonline.activeeurope.com or through the event tab on www.cycleagainstsuicide.com. Contact: Paulreynolds90@hotmail. com.

People NEWS Kerrane wants action on home support services Sinn Féin spokesperson for Roscommon Claire Kerrane has said that it is extremely worrying that there are 1,525 of the most vulnerable people in our society, such as older people and those with disabilities, waiting for home support services in the HSE area comprising of Roscommon, Galway and Mayo. Ms. Kerrane said: “Home support services such as home care packages and home help hours are some of the most important services the HSE provide. “Home care delivered in the home is the preferred form of care for most people and their families, and older people, those with disabilities, and their families are continuously calling out for more home support services in order to meet the need that exists. “Unfortunately, this government, with the support of Fianna Fáil, has taken the decision to underfund the service to the point that there are 6,118 people waiting for a home support service across the State. The largest cohort of those waiting live in Roscommon, Galway and Mayo”. Ms. Kerrane added: “We need to make sure our older people and those with disabilities who need home support are cared for with the dignity and respect they deserve, and to do that we need to ensure that home support services are funded correctly in order to meet the requirement of those people and families who need these services”.

Murphy wants HSE to clarify Loughglynn ambulance plans Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has called on the HSE to verify its plans in relation to Loughglynn ambulance base in County Roscommon. Deputy Murphy said that Government representatives had previously announced that the Loughglynn ambulance base in west Roscommon was expected to provide a 24/7 service by the end of summer – but he is now fearful that this is “simply more spin with no substance”. He said: “I am calling on the HSE to verify whether it intends to open the Loughglynn ambulance base in the immediate future and if so how it is proposed to do so from a logistical point of view. “I understand that the service in Loughglynn will not be provided on a full-time basis and, alarmingly, it may also involve taking an ambulance away from Roscommon town in order to do so. That being the case, it’s an attempt to once again pull the wool over people’s eyes and it is simply unacceptable,” said Deputy Murphy. “If an ambulance is removed from the Roscommon area to service Loughglynn this is only going to put increased pressure on ambulance services in the Roscommon area. “The people of west Roscommon also deserve better – proper resources need to be allocated in respect of the Loughglynn ambulance base and the HSE needs to clarify its plans for the base and put an end to any further speculation on the matter,” concluded Deputy Murphy.

Patients ‘forced to travel to Galway for basic eye ďŹ eld tests’ HSE fails to replace lenses for machine – Murphy Fianna FĂĄil TD for Roscommon/Galway Eugene Murphy has highlighted the fact that Roscommon patients are now being “forced to travel to Galwayâ€? for basic eye field tests as the HSE has not replaced lenses for a specific machine at the Roscommon HSE eye clinic. Deputy Murphy tabled a parliamentary question with the Minister for Health as a number of constituents had raised the matter
with him in recent weeks. “People who were previously able to get a simple eye field test under the Primary Care system in Roscommon have now been told that they must travel to University College Hospital, Galway as the lenses for the specific machine in Roscommon have not been replaced. “The HSE has indicated that the required lenses are very specific and are currently on order and until such time as the lenses have been received all patients requiring this service must access the service in UCHG. “In a most recent PQ reply this week in
relation to the matter the HSE has stated that the lenses are still on order and they do not have an expected date of delivery of these lenses, which is simply not good enough! “A lot of these patients are elderly and may not have their own form of transport so it is very inconvenient for them to have to travel to Galway – all because the HSE has not replaced the lenses for a specific machine. “I will be raising the matter again with the Minister for Health concluded Deputy Murphy.

NewsPeople Ireland has been chosen by Pope Francis to host the World Meeting of Families from 21-26 August 2018. The Vita House Family Centre at Abbey Street, Roscommon, celebrating its 25th birthday this year, will host events as part of the World Meeting of Families from 22nd-25th of August (more details in future issues). This week, in conjunction with Vita House, the Roscommon People continues our special series of weekly articles celebrating the diverse families in our community.
‘Tough times…but now I have my family’ GRAEME SINGLETON
Most people think of a family as mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, grandparents and so on, but for me my family is my husband and our animals. As a young man in my late teens to early twenties I knew I was different from other lads. I had a good childhood, made possible by good parents. Having done the ‘socially correct thing’, getting married and having a child wasn’t right for me or for my wife and daughter. Looking back over the years, so much has changed and helped to make me who I am today. But, ‘who’s that?’ I hear you say. Well I’m life-experienced, I’m happy in ‘my family’ – and, socially I suffer with anxiety and sudden attacks from depression often brought on by the most simplest of things. Most people would say having my family is ‘weird’ – but over the years ‘my kids’ have brought much joy and sadness. In March 2017 I was joined by my now husband, who in a way is much like myself. Today, I write this sat on a beach – almost alone – the odd person breaking the sound of waves, a whistle of the gentle sea breeze and the music of a skylark high above. It’s Heaven to us. With warm sunshine, warm sea and soft sand, it’s our one-day holiday, a break. When we get home later tonight the welcome will be tremendous… paws and wings, barks and meows. You get to appreciate the simple things in life. It’s my family. Today we didn’t join in the crowds of people, going drinking, etc., but instead I collected shells and driftwood from the beach, I paddled in the sea and looked at flowers, plants and rocks along the way. My husband went swimming, laid in the sunshine and, like myself, observed nature at its finest –close up – recording each detail in a timeless capsule. We were happy. So, that’s me, not a loner but someone who enjoys the open air and freedom, someone who can enjoy the creatures on this planet and connect with them whilst still sharing my life with my husband. Yes, at times it’s been hard…married not once but twice! Widowed and married again it brought the toughest of times, but in the end I have my husband, my daughter, my ex-wife, my kids and my extended family here in Vita House.
Eamon and Graeme pictured on their wedding day with Graeme’s daughter, Karina. Left to right: Eamon Hayden, Karina Singleton and Graeme Singleton.
What family means to me EAMON HAYDEN
Families come in various shapes and sizes, and there is a great diversity of families that are both unique but which also share similarities. I was once struck by a conversation where I overheard two people talking of a person who was grieving for their dog which had recently passed away. They thought it funny that someone should exhibit such grief over the death of a pet. I remember feeling at odds with them. I actually went over and said to them that if anything
happened to my dog, I would feel loss and grief, as my dog is every bit as much family as human family is to me…since I share many of my joys and sorrows with the canine members of my family. And so it is for many people: family evolves around those who blossom and flourish around you – and it is different for everybody. For me…I am married to my husband. We share our lives in our home, alongside our family of animals and chickens…who have come to be my family. I defend them and nurture them, and they in turn nurture and defend me. When I come home there is
a warm feeling of familiarity and welcome, as the dogs are overjoyed that their guardians have returned. That’s because they feel protected by us, and we feel loved by them. The chickens come running for their dishes of food, and we in turn get eggs for our breakfast! For me, there is tranquility and love in our home. It may not be special, but it is home – and it is safe and peaceful. I think many times of how family differs for everyone. If you live alone, your dog or cat is your family. If you water your houseplant, it too becomes your family
as it nurtures you with its displays of foilage and flowers. You can find peace and companionship in the simplest of things. So I would say to anybody… the following: that everybody is part of a family, and though our family might not appear so, it is very much special. It is special! If you overhear or observe or encounter someone in grief over the loss of their cat or dog, or for that matter their houseplant, remember that for this person, the loss of such seemingly simple things might be, for them, the loss of part of their family.
Free GP care ‘extended to local carers’
Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan
Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan has said free GP care is to be extended to carers in County Roscommon. Senator Feighan confirmed that the Oireachtas passed the Health (General Practitioner Service) Bill 2018 last week, meaning 14,000 carers nationally will now receive the Free GP Visit Card. This is in addition to those carers who already have free GP access through a Medical Card. Senator Feighan said:
“The new Health legislation passed by the Oireachtas this week means that anyone in receipt of either full or half rate Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit will be automatically eligible for a GP service free of charge. “This is a really important policy change which will benefit many carers. Fine Gael in Government is working to ensure that our economic recovery benefits those who need it most. Carers give invaluable service to
this State and so it is really important to provide them with additional supports such as free GP care. “We know that one of the difficulties for carers is ensuring that their own health is looked after, both physical and mental health. This new free GP access will ensure carers are supported in looking after their own health and wellbeing. “My Fine Gael colleague, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has said he
wants this free GP access for carers in place as quickly as possible. “Once the HSE undertakes the necessary operational requirements, applications for the new services, in both paper and online format, will be in place by September 1st 2018. This means carers in Roscommon are going to be able to access their free GP Visit Card in the very near future,” Senator Feighan concluded.

Thanks…for not releasing balloons!
Visitors to the Rooskey Heritage Festival on Saturday (28th) will be treated to a showing of the Bridie Clyne documentary at 4 pm at Rooskey Community Centre. Directed and edited by Marcus Howard, this documentary is about Bridie Clyne, a partforgotten revolutionary who originally hailed from Dromod, and her story is movingly told by her son, Proinsias O’Rathaille. Birdie was born in Dromod in 1898, took part in the Belfast Trade Boycott during the War of Independence and was a courier delivering messages to the Four Courts at the outbreak of the Irish Civil War. She was mistreated while on hunger strike in Kilmainham Gaol, helped prevent Eamon de Valera’s assassination, and became involved in the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes before setting up her own successful advertising business. Featuring exclusive home movies of Bridie Clyne and Nancy O’Rahilly, her story shows just how well connected she was with some of the big names of Irish history. A plaque to Bridie will be unveiled on Sunday (29th) at 2 pm and this will be followed by a Q&A in the Weir Lodge.

Rooskey Festival Committee has been congratulated by the environmental charity Friends of the Irish Environment [FIE] after it announced earlier this week that it is to cancel a planned fundraising Balloon Race which was due to take place on Sunday, July 29th. FIE who, along with many environmental groups across the world have long campaigned to have balloon releases banned, wrote to the Rooskey Heritage Festival Committee urging them to cancel the event, arguing that the release of gas-filled balloons is an environmental hazard. The group offered to make a “modest contribution” to the Festival committee to defray the cost of cancelling the event.

Hopkins wants help on home help from Harris! PAUL HEALY
Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has asked Minister for Health Simon Harris to increase home help hours in Co. Roscommon. Senator Hopkins says there are currently 306 people across Co. Roscommon either waiting for the introduction of home help support or for an increased allocation of such support. The Fine Gael Senator says she has
received many calls from people who have been approved for home help and are on a waiting list for this service to commence and that she has also received calls from concerned family members. She said: “Considering that there are 1,096 currently in receipt of home support hours, a wait list of a further 306 people is totally unacceptable. This means that approximately a further 30% of people have been approved for home help support but are
on a waiting list for this support”. Senator Hopkins continued: “It is very worrying that people who have specific needs in terms of domestic tasks and personal care are not receiving the appropriate support”. Senator Hopkins said she has been in contact with the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, seeking an increased allocation of home help support hours for Co. Roscommon and has urged him to make this a priority in Budget 2019.

80th anniversary celebrations at ‘Jimmy Hussey’s Forge’ – this weekend EILEEN HUSSEY-DILLON
Jimmy Hussey’s Forge is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its opening this Sunday, 22nd of July, as part of Heritage Weekend in Ballintubber. All are welcome! My father, Jimmy Hussey, was born in 1918. In 1933, at the age of 15, he left home and went to live and serve his time as a blacksmith/farrier with his brother, John Hussey, in Ballinlough, Co. Mayo. My father hailed from Emlagh, Castleplunkett, Co. Roscommon, and always had an interest in horses. Growing up on the Emlagh family farm, you did your fair share of the work, and my father was no exception; regardless of age you had to help out and learn to handle a horse and plough. It was all physical work in those days. It was all about horses, as horses were used for everything, not just for ploughing the land, but also to pull the threshing machine, where corn was sent to the mill for flour while the straw was used to bed down the cows. When the threshing machine came into your neighbour-

hood, it was a community effort, where one neighbour helped out the other. No money was exchanged – just a good dinner of bacon, cabbage, spuds, churned butter and a good mug of buttermilk to wash it down, followed, for those who smoked, by a packet of Player’s Cigarettes or Sweet Afton. On Sunday, the horse and trap came out and you dressed in your best to go to Mass, and horses and traps were tied up by a wall (you can still see the rings today in walls outside many Churches throughout Ireland). In 1937, at the age of 19, my father bought a site from Brodie
Kelly, who owned a bar – now Tom and Bonnie Garvey’s – in the village of Ballintubber at the time, to build his own forge with the help of his brother, Mike Hussey (Emlagh) and his cousin, Pake Hunt (Miltown, Castleplunkett). In 1938, my father opened for business. Horses came from far and near to be shod. My father would not just shoe horses, he also treated infected leg wounds, and so successful was he at it that vets would call out to Jimmy Hussey’s Forge to find out how he was getting such results! As a young girl, I loved com-
ing to my father’s forge and blowing the bellows along with my sisters and brothers, and of course, the children who lived in the village at that time – all tempted by the ring of the ‘Anvil’ and blowing bellows for my father. As time evolved, with the introduction of the tractor the working horse became obsolete, as machines took over. My father was not going to be left behind. He attended Roscommon Vocational School, Lanesboro Street (1957/1958) to upgrade his skills. He came first and second in Ireland with some of his projects and was
asked by the school to become an instructor. Instead, he went to England and worked in iron and steel foundries, and in manufacturing and engineering companies, where he perfected his work with precision. My father married a local farmer’s daughter, Annie Ganley, from Dishahaune, Killmurray, Co. Roscommon, and together they raised a family of ten children. They lived in Lecarrow, Ballintubber in the early days and later moved to Dishahaune West – my mother’s family farm. My parents later bought the farm and house from her brother who
moved to England with his family. They returned to Ballintubber on retirement, and bought a house beside my father’s forge. The forge is a great attraction to schoolchildren today, as their teachers can take them on field trips to visit it to take photographs and videos, and educate the children on the working was of the yesteryear. Today, Jimmy Hussey’s forge is a museum, having been restored by his two sons, Michael and Patrick Hussey. Jimmy Hussey (RIP), whose forge of 1938 still stands proudly in the heart of Ballintubber, is the subject of many fond memories told by locals who grew up with Jimmy and his forge, who ran in and out as children and blew the bellows. The extended Hussey family (including grandchildren and great-grandchildren) are so proud of our father and mother. As I conclude, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Ballintubber and the Tidy Towns for taking such an interest in my father’s forge as it celebrates its 80th anniversary.

Naughten: CLÁR funding ‘will save lives’ DAN DOONER
Minister Denis Naughten confirmed last week that over €42,000 has been allocated for vital life-saving equipment for first responders and voluntary groups in County Roscommon under the CLÁR programme. He said: “Roscommon Civil Defence, which is one of the most active units in the country, has received €25,778 to support volunteer members in their work as they continue to provide a valuable service to the county. Lough Ree Sub Aqua Search & Rescue Unit has been allocated almost €5,000 to purchase a much-needed new trailer, which is very welcome. “Meanwhile, €11,000 has been allocated for investing in defibrillators to local first responders and community groups. Defi-
brillators can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation so this funding is hugely significant and will help to ensure defibrillators are in every school, community hall, sports clubs, and Church and ultimately within easy reach in an emergency so that lives can be saved”. Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan has welcomed the announcement. “This is very good news for Roscommon Civil Defence and Lough Ree Sub Aqua Search & Rescue. Both organisations do wonderful work in our local communities”. Thanking Minister Michael Ring, Senator Feighan said that the CLÁR programme had been closed for new applications by Fianna Fáil in 2009, but is now re-opened and progressing under the Fine Gael-led Government.
€240,000 Clár funding for play and leisure areas Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins

Minister Denis Naughten
DAN DOONER
Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins and Independent councillor Laurence Fallon have both welcomed new CLÁR funding which is to be provided for groups across Roscommon Galway under Measure 2 CLÁR Funding. Senator Hopkins: “Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, has informed me that over €240,000 is to be provided to groups across Roscommon and Galway. “In Roscommon, €48,661.20 is to be provided for Tarmon NS, Castlerea to enhance playing field facilities, €21,644.17 for Athleague NS for installation of an all-weather play area, €29,553.73 for St. Aidan’s Recreational & Community Development committee in Taughboy for a playground, €30,000 for Tisrara Community Sports Park, and €11,700 for Scoil Bhríde NS, Fourmilehouse for fencing at the National School and Community Centre,” she said. Senator Hopkins added: “In Galway, €50,000 has been made available for Caltra Community Playgroup for a new playground, and another €50,000 has been granted for a new all-inclusive playground in Clonberne.
“I have been working with many of these groups for some time in order to secure funding and it is positive that this has now been confirmed”. Cllr. Laurence Fallon also welcomed the announcement. “I am delighted with the funding which was allocated following my significant representations on behalf of Athleague NS, St. Aidan’s Recreational & Community Development Committee and Tisrara Community Sports Park, which have all been successful in receiving funding,” stated Cllr. Fallon. Athleague NS has received over €21,000 for the installation of an all-weather play area and equipment; St. Aidan’s Recreational & Community Development Committee received almost €30,000 for a playground with a natural look and emphasis on older children, while Tisrara Community Sports Park has received €30,000 for lighting for its walking track. “The grant-aid for these three projects totals over €80,000” stated Cllr. Fallon. “This is a significant level of funding which is very necessary to provide equipment and facilities to advance the ability of young people to enjoy more exercise as well as better facilities for young and old alike”.

These are the proceeds from the Solid Joys, Lasting Treasure fundraising concert, a celebration of the life and ministry of the late Canon Liz McElhinney, which was held in Kilbride Community Centre last May.
Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has said that funding of €40 Million under the Dormant Accounts Action Plan 2018 has been provided nationally to support disadvantaged organisations. Senator Hopkins stated: “The Dormant Accounts Fund is used to assist those most in need in our communities. Communities across Roscommon and Galway will be eligible for a portion of this national funding in the coming months. “The Dormant Accounts Fund is used to support organisations and initiatives such as the Civil Defence, Seniors Alert Scheme, Community Sports Hubs and Dementia Resource Centres. This fund is resourced by the unclaimed accounts and life assurance policies in financial institutions and insurance undertakings around the country”. Senator Hopkins continued: “The funding is provided to each lead Government Department who will then support the various initiatives within their remit. This funding will be used to cover costs like machinery, specialised equipment, refurbishment costs and vehicles, as well as capacity building costs in our local social enterprises. “It is important that we target support for rural communities with the greatest need. This is what Dormant Accounts funding is all about, this support for communities is very positive and will help them to deliver a meaningful impact locally”. Senator Hopkins concluded: “This Action Plan sets out a roadmap for Dormant Account funding for the coming years. I am confident that the measures included will have a real impact on communities across Roscommon and Galway in the months and years ahead and I will continue to work with many groups locally to ensure we can secure the greatest possible benefit for our local communities”.

her to write down and share details of some of the wonders she has experienced over the years and her book ‘The See Through People’ was the beginning of what she described as an “amazing and uplifting journey”. Her latest book ‘Angels at my Table’ is also proving popular among Heidi’s fans, many of whom were in attendance last Sunday in Castlerea, and, according to the medium, the waiting list to see her now exceeds well over a year.

Why it’s okay for children to withhold hugs As a small child, were you ever forced to hug a relative you detested? Did you ever feel the desperate urge to leg it upstairs and hide under a bed because your mother insisted she’d give you ‘a wallop’ if you didn’t give your uncle a kiss? I had that feeling – although it was only one particularly nasty-pieceof-work uncle who repulsed me, but we won’t go into the reasons why. However, it’s because of this repugnant individual (now deceased), that I decided I’d never insist that my kids hug a relative – even a much-adored one – unless they wanted to. Of course my kids always did want to give their hugs freely; we’re an affectionate bunch, and besides, the people we allowed into our home, and into our girls’ lives, were decent, loving ones. The horrible ones never received an invite from me. I’m sure readers can understand where I’m coming from, because I’d imagine that probably every family has one oddball relative (or
three!) they’d rather not see ever again. The reason I’m raising this somewhat-controversial issue is because, while chatting with friends last week, one of them said she disagreed with a blogger who has given her kids permission to say no to hugs. “She’s forcing her kids to withhold affection,” says my pal. “No she’s not, she’s teaching them it’s okay to say ‘no’ and she’s teaching them about giving consent – something which is very important”, says I. You see readers, I believe that nobody should be emotionally manipulated into kissing or hugging another person just because they feel they’re obliged to do so, or just because that person says they’ll ‘cry,’ or will ‘be very sad,’, if they don’t receive that big hug/kiss. A child may have a perfectly valid reason for not wanting to hug a relative, male or female. The child could be shy, or feeling unwell, the child could be tired, the child may not like the smell of that person’s
perfume/aftershave, or indeed the squashy embrace followed by the big smudgy lippy smooch marks that can often be left staining their little cheeks. Then again, the child may in some cases have (dare I suggest), a more alarming reason for not wanting this particular individual invading their personal space, and slobbering all over them. In my opinion, they should be allowed to decline that cuddle, because, just as we are entitled as adults to have bodily autonomy, so too are our children. Now I’m far from being perfect, in fact, I’m majorly flawed; but, as a parent, I was determined to be the mother I needed when I was young. My adult kids tell me I was. I’m so relieved. With that in mind, may I add…if an insistent hugger/ kisser becomes upset or decides to make your child feel responsible for their sensitive needs by turning on the fake waterworks, then the parent should grow a set
and you should politely (and kindly) let the emotional blackmailer know that your responsibility is to your child, and maybe gently explain how you’ve chatted about it being okay for them not to hug… indeed not to do anything that makes them feel highly uncomfortable concerning their little bodies. Remember readers (those who are parents), your job is to make sure your child knows how to stand up for themselves – and in situations where they’re unable to do that, you’ll do it for them. It’s equally vital that, while teaching your kids to understand that people (including relatives) don’t have a license to embrace them whenever they want, you try your best to ensure that they’re polite and should always acknowledge that person’s presence and perhaps suggest they offer a casual high-five or even a friendly handshake as a mannerly alternative until they’re feeling more comfortable with embraces.
I agree with Tulsk farmer John Groarke! What do rich people have that the rest of us poor sods don’t? I’ll tell ya – money, influence and a gang of brown-nosed ass kissers, that’s what! Oh, and according to Tulsk farmer John Groarke, an advantage to holding one of the most important roles and honours in our country – that of being Uachtarán na hÉireann! Now I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Groarke’s take on the possible presidential candidates’ financial status. He alludes to those people who are “running for these high offices” being “very well paid, most of them” adding that “the rural people of Ireland don’t get a look in at these jobs”. He adds that “the small person or poorer person is just as fit to be President of Ireland as these other people”. Well said, sir!
You see readers, the ordinary ‘Joe/ Josephine Soap’ should be considered for the Áras for the simple reason that having survived the recession (just about), us less well-off folks have proved we’re the true embodiment of hard work – nay, the embodiment of everyman/woman who can inspire others to make something of themselves through nothing more than sheer grit, determination and motivation (not to mention climbing to the highest office in the land whilst doing it!). Being president is no picnic and if anyone can do it, it’s the typical man or woman in the street, because, let’s face it, nobody could be more driven, and nobody could bring a broader and more popular mandate to this influential role! Tulsk farmer John Groarke

FRANK
BRANDON
FRANK BRANDON’S
unique take on life ...
Super 8s not so super…yet It’s Monday morning, and I’m sitting at the kitchen table with my tablet (that’s the mini-computer that I write this stuff on, not the many little pills that I have to take to try to stay alive) in front of me, and I am trying to figure out why the first weekend of the Super 8s has left me as deflated as a burst balloon. All week I was excited at the wonderful games that would take place over the weekend, and even with the inconvenience of having to go to work, and knowing the World Cup final was on, I had it all sorted so that I could see all of the football games, except for the first half of the Rossies’ outing with Tyrone. Unusually, everything worked out according to plan. I am not going to analyse the matches themselves, but as a Galway supporter, I should be much happier this morning after we put the men from the Kingdom to the sword for the first time in the championship since 1965, a full 53 years ago. Last night I found myself in Mikeen’s, and, to be fair the large crowd of maroon and white followers were in high good humour, and to a man they were happily celebrating the victory – and all, including Ballygar man Bernie Mongan, were agreed that we deserved our win, and that it didn’t matter how we won, as long as we won.
Roscommon fans pictured supporting the Rossies in the Super 8s’ opener against Tyrone in Croke Park on Saturday.
And so, this morning I feel like a spoilsport, because I thought it was a shocking match, completely devoid of any atmosphere or intensity, and I cannot bring myself to get excited at the modern game of football, where the ball goes backwards or sideways more than it goes forward – and where the handpass has far exceeded the kick as a means of moving the ball. The sad thing for me is that Galway are only doing what the successful teams are doing, and maybe they have to, as the AllIreland champions (the Dubs) played ‘keepball’ for almost the last ten minutes of their win over Donegal, and simply ran down the clock –while having 14 or even 15
men behind the ball has become the norm at intercounty level. The other thing that the pundits in Mikeen’s were all agreed on was that these games should never have been in Croke Park, a venue where even 20 or 30 thousand people look lost, and where there is very little atmosphere…whereas even smaller numbers in provincial grounds would generate a top class atmosphere and maybe make for more intense competition. However, hope springs eternal, and I am convinced that we will have four rip-roaring games this weekend, and Clones, Omagh, Newbridge and the Hyde will prove once and for all that these games belong outside of Croke
Roscommon fans pictured supporting the Rossies in the Super 8s’ opener against Tyrone in Croke Park on Saturday.
Park. Just like last week I can’t wait, and hopefully this week we will see the type of games the Super 8s should deliver. As for the World Cup Final, which we kept hopping over to, the French were probably deserving winners, but once again the feeling persists that in big games the big decisions always go against the minnows. In my opinion, the decisive penalty kick for the second French goal should never have been given. I genuinely feel the Croatians were hard done by. However, for me, the highlight was the presentation of the medals which took place in the type of an absolute downpour that Irish Water would pay for. It proved that, in Russia, only one person matters. Three presidents –Putin, (Russia), Macron (France) and Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic (Croatia) – were on the podium as the rain poured down, but the only one to be covered with an umbrella was the Russian president, while Macron, in his Sunday best suit, and the Croatian president, in her Croatia red and white jersey, were absolutely soaked. Eventually (much too late) a couple of brollies arrived, but by then the two Presidents were soaking! To be fair, they both took it with good grace and were highly enthusiastic in their greetings to both winners and losers.
Open Family Day at Donamon Castle My good friend, Sean Beirne, tells me that not only is the Donamon Open Day coming up on the 29th of July, but – and I don’t know how he managed it – Dancing with the Stars winner Jake Carter and his band will be there, and that alone should guarantee a full house of enthusiastic young (and not so young) ladies. Needless to say there is also a full line-up of further entertainment, and I will tell you all next week. Definitely appearing are The Conquerors, Crazy Corner, the Castlerea Brass Band, the Duggan School of Dancing, and a new unnamed traditional group who will perform a medley of Irish music. All the usual features including pony rides, facepainting, bouncy castle and the wonderful book stall will be there, and I’m sure so will my favourite, the refreshment stall, selling the lovely buns and teas and coffees. Also, the Monster Draw will take place, with a first prize of €1,500. Tickets will be on sale on the day. Make sure you get there on time… you can bring your own picnic or barbeque with you (keep an old sausage or a burger for me). It all begins with Mass at 12.30. Parking and admission is free, and it will be one of the great days of the summer. I remember a great TV programme called Jake and the Fatman, so if I make it to Donamon we can have a re-make of the ‘60s hit series.
And finally… Finally for this week, now that we are back on the golf course in Castlerea, the big question I have to ask is – is there any blinder junction in the whole of the country than the one where the Glinsk road meets the Glenamaddy one? It’s a t junction, and you nearly have to be fully across the whole road to see traffic coming from the left. I’m no engineer, but there must be a way of making it a bit clearer –and a bit safer.

Castlerea Rose Festival 2018
30 years of Castlerea Rose Festival – Chairman’s message Castlerea Rose Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary and I am honoured to serve a third term as Rose Festival Chairman. I am very proud of all the festivals and entertainment our committee has organised for the past 30 years for the people of Castlerea and for our visitors. The Rose Festival has also raised many thousands of euro for local charities over the years and I want to thank all the committee members of this
year’s Rose Festival and indeed all the committees over the last 30 years who kept the festival going, sometimes in trying circumstances. A massive thank you to all of our loyal sponsors who have supported us over the years – please support them in return. For the last eight years the Rose Festival has generated extra income by hiring out our inflatables, trollies, generators and PA systems to parades in
other towns. This income now pays for up the 40% of the cost of our own Rose Festival. A sincere thanks to all my committee members and our crew of helpers who volunteer their valuable time and efforts so that we can take part in these parades all over Connacht. It’s often hard work but as a group we do have some great fun and craic along the way and the bonding created with all age groups leads to lifetime friendships.
The best reward the Rose Festival Committee can have is that we see young and old come out to our various events and enjoy the festival. Sincere thanks to Roscommon County Council, Roscommon Civil Defence, An Garda Síochána, Clonalis House and Dr. Greg Kelly for all your continued support. It’s Castlerea Rose Festival time again, enjoy! – Castlerea Rose Festival Chairman, John Mulligan

New climate report must be implemented - IFA IFA Environment Chairman Thomas Cooney has welcomed the climate report published by the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee and called for its proposals regarding farm-scale renewables and supports for improving on-farm efficiencies to be urgently implemented. “This report and the recently published climate abatement report by Teagasc, have identified the necessary actions. It is now time for Government action”. Earlier this year IFA addressed the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee and had a number of key climate proposals, including: The announcement of a biomass development programme, which would displace electricity generated from peat and coal; the reopening of the Green Low Carbon Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS); the announcement of a zero carbon electricity tariff for communitybased, roof-top and micro-energy renewable projects. This should be used over time to displace electricity production from gas.

Jim O’Connor, Roscommon IFA Co. Chairman, has said it is a complete farce that the agriloan scheme announced in last October’s Budget would not be available to farmers until the end of this year. “Farmers were already frustrated that the Minister had indicated that it would be the second half of 2018 when money would be available to farmers. Now it looks like it will be a race against time to have the money available at
any stage in 2018. It is a complete farce,” he said. Mr. O’Connor said an IFA delegation were informed of the further delay at a meeting with the SBCI last week. The IFA has now written to Minister Creed seeking an urgent meeting to try and get the scheme up and running immediately. “Farmers are crying out for some sort of help during what is an extraordinarily difficult time on farms due to the ongoing drought.
These loans may have helped some farmers to fund some of the increased costs that have piled on over the last year. Yet it is clear that it is now a long way off,” he said. Mr. O’Connor said he was hugely frustrated by the delays in getting a new agri-loan package up and running. “The long winter and the ongoing drought conditions have imposed savage costs on farmers. This is a practical measure that
could give some sort of break, yet all we see is inertia across Government Departments and State agencies”. He added: “It is clear that the decision to extend these loans to include food companies has not helped matters as it has made complying with relevant EU rules more complex. The scheme should be implemented immediately for farmers and all the money should be for the farmers”.
Woods calls on factories to end cattle price cuts Speaking at a National Livestock Committee meeting in Dublin, IFA Livestock Chairman Angus Woods said the factories have to stop cutting cattle prices and stabilise the market. He said: “IFA has been in contact with Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed and the key factory players on the price issue. Our message is clear: stop cutting prices and stop undermining confidence in the market place”. Mr. Woods called on Minister Creed to urgently act and respond to the seriousness of the situation. “Minister Creed needs to call in the meat factories and tell them that they have to stabilise the beef price and stop undermining confidence in the markets. Stability on cattle prices is critical at this juncture and the Minister needs to ensure that the factories act in a responsible manner”.
Members of the National Livestock Committee and IFA County Chairmen, along with beef farmers,
are set to meet with factory management throughout the country to highlight the damage they say has been
caused by cattle price cuts and the need to stabilise the price and markets, and restore confidence.
The IFA livestock leader said the factories “need to act in a responsible manner and must stop using the drought issues to undermine prices”. “Factories can stabilise the prime cattle prices as there is no additional volume of prime cattle and the market for prime cattle remains strong. “The fall in cattle prices is seriously undermining incomes on beef farms and extremely damaging to the suckler herd. The most efficient beef farmers cannot produce beef at a price below the costs of production. “The Department of Agriculture AIMS data on the key 12 to 24 month age category shows that there are only 9,000 more cattle in the system in April compared to last year and the kill to date this year is already up 22,000 head,” he concluded.

Manager’s report… Brendan Egan, Castlerea Mart “Similar numbers of stock presented for sale last week and the trade for the better quality continental cattle is holding firm, with a good trade for the top quality bullocks and heifers on offer. There was a similar picture in the weanlings rings with the quality lots holding in price but plainer low weight stock remaining a harder sell. Breeding stock calves and runners witnessed good demand while the cow trade reported a good clearance. “Cows with calves at foot made from €980 to €2300 for a Limousin cow and her Charolais bull calf at foot.
“There was a good number of calves presented for sale this week with young calves making form €120 to €350 with the stronger runner type lots making from €350 to €575 per head. “Sales continue at Castlerea Mart today (Thursday) with our usual sale of bullocks, heifers, cows, calves, runners and weanlings. All sales commence at 11 am and sellers are advised to have stock penned by 10.30 am in order to facilitate viewing time prior to commencement of sale at 11 am”.
Manager’s report… Maura Quigley, Roscommon Mart “There were smaller numbers on offer at last Friday’s sale. Prices for bullocks ranged from €2.23 per kilo up to €2.54 per kilo. Heifers averaged from €1.80 up to €1.94 per kilo. Dry cows made from an average of €1.49 up to €1.74 per kilo. Sale as usual this Friday (20th) for bullocks, heifers, dry cows, suckler cows and weanlings. “We had a similar entry of sheep at last Wednesday’s sale. There was a dip in trade for spring lambs with a top price of €110. The trade for cast ewes was also back from previous weeks with prices ranging from €35 to €102. Sales continue each Wednesday at 11 am or lambs and cast ewes”.

Roscommon hoteliers optimistic on rest of year Hotel and guesthouse owners in Roscommon and across the country are forecasting a good summer for the sector, according to the results of the latest industry survey undertaken by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF). The majority (70%) say business is up, compared to the same time last year, with increases in ‘staycations’ and visitors from overseas markets including North America and continental Europe. Fergal Ryan, Chair of the Roscommon branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, said that although the outlook is encouraging, there is little room for complacency.
“Despite the upturn, not every tourism business is enjoying the same level of success and the hotel sector is still a number of years away from achieving sustainability in some regional areas,” he said. Nationally, almost half (49%) of hoteliers are seeing a drop in UK business while one in five say their advance bookings for the rest of the summer are down compared to last year. Importantly for Roscommon, the domestic market remains buoyant with many (60%) hoteliers seeing an increase in homegrown business compared to this time last year. In terms of overseas visitors, six in ten (60%) hoteliers say
business levels from the US are up while four in ten (41%) are seeing an increase from Germany. Although the fall in UK visitors appears to have tapered off for now, after the significant fall in 2017 (down 5% year on year), only one in five (18%) hoteliers are seeing an increase. Employment growth is set to continue in 2018 and Mr. Ryan said the tourism industry is on track to create 40,000 new jobs by 2021. “Almost half of hoteliers (47%) expect to increase their staffing levels over the next year with opportunities available across all areas of business, from entry-level positions to jobs for experienced staff,” he said.
Service Matters introduces staff awards! Friday, 6th of July saw Service Matters’ staff from locations all over Ireland arrive at Roscommon Headquarters for a day of information, team building and engagement. Over 80 people arrived on site to catch up with colleagues, meet other team members, and hear about company developments. This year Service Matters launched Annual Awards, recognising the contribution outstanding team members make every day in the busi-
ness, recognising people who continually ‘go the extra mile’. Vincent Collins, Managing Director states: “We know we have great people, and we are delighted to award them with this well-deserved accolade in acknowledgement of their significant contribution to the business. These new annual awards are our way of saying a special thank you to those who really do their best to make service matter”.

Always remembered by your loving husband Johnny. Anniversary Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary on Sunday 22nd July at 11 o’clock.
On the occasion of his First Anniversary, Seán’s wife Helen (née Jones), sisters Eileen and Phyllis, brother Michael and the extended Monaghan family wish to offer heartfelt thanks to all who supported and sympathised with us in our sad loss. We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and care assistants who cared for Seán in the Galway Clinic, Portiuncla Hospital, Roscommon Sacred Heart Home and Roscommon University Hospital, in particular Dr Gerard O’Mara and his team, together with Geraldine and Aileen from the palliative care team, whose kindness and guidance through Seán’s final journey will never be forgotten. We thank Fr. Seán Beirne, hospital chaplain, for his spiritual support at that difficult time. We thank Seán’s GP, Dr Martina Hanratty, as well as Dr Cyril Crosbie. We thank Seán’s many friends and neighbours who visited him during his long hospital stay, and whose company he was always so happy to share. We are indebted to Seamus and Alison Biesty for their immense support to Seán during his illness and to Helen ever since. We offer our sincere gratitude to those who attended Seán’s Wake, Removal, Funeral Mass and Burial, many of whom travelled long distances to be with us. We thank all of Seán’s former colleagues from An Garda Síochána for attending and sharing memories of Seán with us. We are grateful to all those who telephoned, sent floral tributes, Mass cards and letters of condolence; each one was very much appreciated. Thank you to Fr Dusmanta for officiating at Seán’s Funeral services and to the Sacristan of St Mary’s Church in Ballagh, Luke Madden. Sincere thanks to the musicians: Teresa Costello, Seán Sweeney, Jimmy Hussey and Mick Fenelon, whose singing and music at the Removal, Funeral and Month’s Mind Masses reflected Seán so well. To the gravediggers, all neighbours of Seán, who carefully prepared his resting place, thank you. To the undertakers Pat and Tom Smyth, thank you for your professional guidance and utmost sensitivity. Thank you to the many people who brought food to the house, to the management and staff of the Abbey Hotel, and to Nuala and May for all of your help. Thanks to wonderful neighbours, relations and friends for your support at the time of Seán’s illness and Funeral and who have continued to support Helen in the difficult and sad year since. Finally, as it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our sincere gratitude and appreciation. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for all your intentions. Seán’s First Anniversary Mass will take place on Saturday, 21st July 2018 at 8.00pm in St Mary’s Church, Ballagh, Kilrooskey.

The 5-day Killarney Racing Festival ends today with a national hunt card off at 1.50 pm. Racing at Leopardstown is on the flat, stalls for the first opening at 5.30 pm, and performing at the Bulmer’s Live Music Festival is the 80s ‘Love Of The Common People’ star Paul Young. Tomorrow the usual jumping action is on at neighbouring track Kilbeggan and features the Midland National starting at 5.55 pm. Saturday sees the Irish Oaks feature at headquarters, the Curragh, supported by the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes racing starting at 2.35 pm. It is the Curragh again on Sunday, first race at 1.45 pm, with the Sapphire Stakes and the Kilboy Estate Stakes, both Group 2 races. National hunt takes the stage at Tipperary off at 2.05 pm. Monday racing returns to the west at 5.50 pm for two days in Co. Mayo at Ballinrobe. The Midland National has 25 entries, 6 of them owned by Gigginstown who love to win here on their local track. Take your pick! There are 15 fillies left in the Irish Oaks at declaration stage 7 trained by Aidan O’Brien in Ballydoyle headed by Royal Ascot winner Magic Wand who will be joined by at least 2 of the other 6 probably Forever Together and Bye Bye Baby. There are 3 cross channel raiders Sea Of Class and Dramatic Queen trained by William Haggas and Worth Waiting from David Lanigan’s yard seeking a hat trick. Willie McCreery has both Liquid Amber, Mary Tudor, Dermot Weld’s Romiyna, Joseph O’Brien’s Tissiak and Jim Bolger’s Park Bloom, complete the field. Forever Together beat Magic Wand and Bye Bye Baby into 3rd and 4th in the Epsom Oaks by 8l and 19l before Royal Ascot. Five Ballydoyle runners head the top six in the betting with William Haggas’s Sea Of Class 2nd in the market to Magic Wand. O’Brien looking for his sixth win in the race may have to wait as Sea Of
Class, stepping up in class, is an improving filly and may just beat Magic Wand. Next week we will be looking at the opening days of the Festival at Ballybrit and wondering where did that year go.
Week in Review Dundalk specialist Coach Bombay, trained by Adrian Joyce in Curraghaboy, won his first race on the turf, at Navan, the Come Racing September 8th Handicap. The 10-Y-O, in the colours of Mrs Christina Joyce, beat Rince Deireanach and Society Ranger a short head and a nose. On Sunday in Sligo Yvonne Dunleavy trained Padraic O’Conaire to win the handicap hurdle under Paul Townend for her brother-in-law John Dunleavy and his cousin Cahal O’Brien from Ballintober. The well backed favourite came with a late run to beat Movingswiftlyalong and Lady Quill.
General News Godolphin’s Epsom Derby winner Masar is ruled out for the season with a leg injury but owner, Sheikh Mohammed hopes he will be able return to racing as a 4-Y-O. Next year’s Coronation Cup, over the same course and distance as the Derby, as well as Ascot’s King George Queen Elizabeth and the Prix de l’Arc are all possible targets. Flat jockey Paul Mulrennan, 36, has injured his back in a fall on the gallops last Saturday at Michael Dods yard. He will be on the side-line for over 6 weeks and is fortunate that he does not require surgery only rest. Jim Culloty, the man who steered Best Mate to three Gold Cup successes before saddling Lord Windermere to land the Cheltenham showpiece in 2014, has handed in his training licence. Patrick Mullins equalled Ted Walsh’s record of 545 amateur wins, as he partnered Irish Lass to
victory in the opener at Limerick, the Mares Maiden Hurdle, on Saturday. He moved into a clear lead on Sunday winning the bumper in Sligo and making it 546. Is 1000 amateur wins possible? Bulmers Irish Cider is taking over as presenting partner of the Cheltenham Festival from Timico, whose 4-year deal ended in March, and it will now be known as “The Festival, presented by Bulmers”. The highlight of the festival, the Gold Cup will now be called The Bulmers Cheltenham Gold Cup in a four-year deal signed with Jockey Club Racecourses. Bulmers Cider is brewed in Clonmel and is labelled Magners Cider in the UK. Philip Fenton has renewed his trainer’s licence after serving a 3 year ban. He has his first runner, Secret Cargo, in the bumper in Killarney tomorrow. Fenton has had a change of mind, having stated last October he had no intention of returning to training. Fenton’s training career has featured multiple Grade 1 winners, including Dunguib, who won the 2009 Champion Bumper at Cheltenham.
Competition Time Kathleen Kelly, Longford, Evelyn Finn, Mullymux and James Casey, Lanesboro are going to Kilbeggan tomorrow night courtesy of Secretary Paddy Dunican. Don’t forget to collect your tickets in the office. Seamus Duke ON SPORT Well I didn’t see that coming! @SeamusDuke
Championship Watch
First of all, this week I put my hand up and acknowledge just how wrong I was last week. I was of the genuine belief that Roscommon would be at least competitive against Tyrone and in fact I actually tipped us to win the game! After so many years doing this job I thought I might have seen this hammering coming down the track but no. It is clear now that we beat a fairly limited Armagh outfit in what was a very good game of football between two evenly matched teams. I was not alone in my view that Roscommon had a chance against Tyrone as many including some pundits at national level thought that Roscommon might win it. The brutal reality is that although we have a really good team with some excellent players, our style of play is not adequate when it comes to playing the elite teams in the game. Too often in recent years we have suffered heavy beatings in major games and it is now becoming a pattern. The painful truth is that Roscommon will probably have to implement a very defensive and negative playing style to ensure that they are not on the end of hammerings like last Saturday against Tyrone and last year’s match against Mayo in the replay. With another big game coming up against Donegal next weekend this is not the time to be talking about our playing style, but after this Super 8 campaign is over that debate must take place. There are a number of fundamental questions that Roscommon GAA players, management, officials, and supporters will have to answer including: Have we got the players to implement a negative defensive game predicated on counter-attacking football? Will Roscommon supporters want to come and see a game where there are 12, 14 and even 15 players behind the ball? Will players like the Murtaghs, Smiths, Cathal Cregg and the other attacking players in our squad want to play a game when they will be spending most of their time down in the full and half-back line passing the ball across and back waiting for an opening to be created? Will the current management want to coach a football style that is negative and is a win at all costs philosophy? If the answer to all of the above questions is yes then Roscommon will come out in 2019 a totally different team. The pundits won’t like it, the fans probably won’t like it either. It may produce results Enda Smith challenges for a high ball during Roscommon’s Super 8s defeat to Tyrone at Croke Park and the operative word is ‘may’. last Saturday.
So-called experts voice concerns… Several of the so-called experts have been giving their verdict on the Super 8 competition which is daft considering that we have only one weekend over us. Let’s wait until the campaign is over before we pass judgement. The only valid criticism I have heard so far is that the first round of games should have been played at the provincial venues but that is something that can easily be done for next year. The standard of football was poor enough overall though and there were two onesided games on Saturday and a very poor attendance on Sunday. There is sure to be far more excitement at all four games this coming weekend.
Clubs struggle in shadow of Super 8s While the country is ‘enjoying’ the Super 8s the clubs are continuing to struggle and struggle badly. Before anyone in Roscommon thinks I am talking about what’s going on here, I’m talking about what’s going on in many counties and especially in clubs with senior players. I have been talking to team managers and club officials in many counties who are at their wit’s end trying to field teams for meaningless league games and challenge matches waiting for the inter-county season to be over. Hundreds of players have gone to the USA for the summer from all over the country and who would blame them? There is huge disquiet at club level at how the new fixtures calendar is working out. Remember 95% of GAA players are club players. They are being totally forgotten about.
Hats off to terrific Tyrone I take my hat off to Tyrone, I said some uncomplimentary words about them here last week but they are evolving all the time as a team and they have this counter-attacking footballing style off to a tee. At least four of their scores on Saturday came from moves started in the own fullback line when there were no Tyrone players in the Roscommon half of the field yet 20 seconds later it was a goal or a point. It’s a style of play that requires huge physical fitness, strength and conditioning, and accurate kickers who will get the scores. As the game went on last Saturday Roscommon’s challenge waned so badly and thank God the it didn’t go on
much longer. The debate on our style of play can take place in a few weeks’ time but the players and management must now prepare for another huge game this weekend against Donegal. It would be unrealistic to expect that Roscommon would go out and win but I am expecting a positive reaction from the players. Donegal were competitive against Dublin but they are not near as good a side as Tyrone, and I am expecting a tight game. I hope the Roscommon fans turn up on the day and give the team a boost. Donegal will come knowing that they have to win and they have the players to win it narrowly.
France win a great World Cup According to those who were lucky enough to be there the World Cup was a resounding success. It was well-run and the facilities were magnificent according to all reports.
I picked out France before the tournament started (at least I got something right!) and they were the best side overall even if they did get a couple of lucky calls in the final against Croatia.
Padraig Harrington has happy memories of the British Open which tees off at Carnoustie this week.
British Open set for Carnoustie
France beat Croatia 4-2 to win the World Cup Final last Sunday at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
I love the British Open and this week the action will be at Carnoustie which is the toughest of all the Open courses. Padraig Harrington won there after a play-off with Sergio Garcia. I am going to back Shane Lowry and Rickie Fowler each-way. So you know now who to avoid!
All-Ireland SFC QuarterFinal Series (Super 8s) Roscommon v Donegal on Saturday in Dr. Hyde Park at 5 pm The deal was that Roscommon would surprise Tyrone in Croke Park and be playing Donegal for a place in the AllIreland semi-final! Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way! The match is previewed in more detail elsewhere in the paper. Donegal will probably have enough to win by four or five points. Prediction: Donegal
Tyrone v Dublin on Saturday in Healy Park Omagh at 7 pm What a night this will be in Omagh. The Dubs will be in town and in the bear pit that is Healy Park they will get a hot reception. Tyrone are a better side than I thought they were while the Dubs were not any great shakes against Donegal. I cannot separate them. Prediction: A draw
Galway v Kildare in Newbridge on Sunday at 2 pm Galway had a super win against Kerry and are another team who are fine-tuning their counter-attacking game plan. Kildare were good against Monaghan but they rely too much on Daniel Flynn. Galway should have enough to qualify for the All-Ireland semi-final with a win. Prediction: Galway
Monaghan v Kerry on Sunday in Clones at 4 pm I was taken aback at how poor Kerry were last Sunday against Galway. This is the last chance saloon and it is a very difficult game for The Kingdom. Monaghan at home will really fancy their chances and know that a win will almost certainly put them in the last four. By Sunday evening at 6 pm Kerry could be put of the championship. Prediction: Monaghan
Not that Liam Tully, the other one… Note: I got a call from Liam Tully, former Roscommon U-17 team manager on Monday night. Another man called Liam Tully posted his views on the Roscommon v Tyrone game on the Roscommon People Twitter account (which he is well entitled to do). Afterwards Kildride man Liam got a few texts and phone calls from people who thought it was him that had posted the comments. He just wanted me to say that it wasn’t him as he is not even on Twitter. Glad to clear that up!

SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER No medium setting on Rossie spin cycle @dan_dooner
THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner Supporting Roscommon can be a dizzying experience akin to being placed inside a washing machine on a 70-minute cycle, which can and without warning, alternate between hot and cold. Relegation from Division 1 was followed by a Connacht title win, while league victory and promotion back to the top table preceded a disappointing championship defeat at Dr. Hyde Park. Then, a swashbuckling win over Armagh allowed a short period of recovery and return to optimism before the Red Hand of Tyrone reached out and strangled all signs of life in front of a national audience last weekend. Of course it’s tough being
a supporter but imagine for a moment what it must be like being a player or a member of the backroom team. You can be absolutely certain that nobody goes out with the intention of shipping a heavy beating in front of the TV cameras at Croke Park. As is the case in all sports, supporters and pundits are entitled to offer their opinion as to how the team’s fortunes may be improved when this does happen however. Whether it’s a more defensive gameplan or a heavier workload at the gym, the suggestion since last Saturday has been that the team is lacking something in terms of its preparation or setup. There had been a similar, if more muted inkling, that the team was ‘too open’ when the Rossies regained top-flight status at Croke Park against Cavan earlier this year. There was also some evidence of this as little as
two weeks ago when they went toe to toe with Armagh in Portlaoise. The mounting evidence suggests that this Roscommon team is currently somewhere between Divisions 1 and 2: just about too good for the second tier, but not quite at competitive Division 1 levels just yet. There’s no shame in that and it certainly doesn’t mean that the Rossies should settle or be happy with their lot. But while Kevin McStay, quite rightly, was reluctant to discuss any change in gameplan last Saturday evening, it is something Roscommon will be forced to look at eventually. Would it be prudent to be more defensive in an effort to live with the big boys in Division 1 or can he and this talented Roscommon panel find a medium setting between the ‘swash’ and the ‘buckle’ on the field of play at least?
Cathal Compton attempts to find a route forward for Roscommon against Tyrone at Croke Park last Saturday.
ALLEZ LES BLEUS! It was hard not to feel sorry for Croatia as they fell at the final hurdle in the World Cup last Sunday. However, France were the worthy winners overall and it was interesting to see how effective Paul Pogba (pictured) was when it mattered. Hopefully José Mourinho can take a leaf out of Didier Deschamps’ book for the upcoming season!
A DOUBLE FOR NOREEN! Roscommon Lady Captain, Geraldine Hoban, right, pictured with the winner of the recent Lady Captain’s Prize, Noreen O’Grady, recently. Noreen had also won the President’s Prize earlier this year.
The sporting brief finishing second and Simon Walker taking gross. Andy Lawlor was third meanwhile, and Michael Corcoran took the junior prize. Finally to Strokestown where Martina Feehily won the recent Lady Captain’s prize to the ladies, holding off stiff competition from Zoe McDermott and Brid Connellan who finished second and third respectively. The President’s Prize to the men was won by Pat Connelllan with 102.5 while Jonathan Cassidy (99.5) was second and Brian O’Rourke (104.5) was third. Gross went to Kevin McLoughlin, Past President’s prize to Paddy Murray, Front 9 to Noel Kennedy and Back 9 to Martin Silke.
Golf Canning winning! We begin our round-up in Boyle where Terry Canning won the men’s 12-hole Stableford last Thursday with a great score of 29 points, just pipping runnerup, Pat Conroy’s 28. There were 3 twos recorded with the spoils being shared by Terry Canning, Conor Hamill and Jonathan Egan. Jimmy Dwyer, Killian Egan, Tish Perry and Joyce Boles won the Lady Captain’s Scramble last weekend. Several other prizes were presented to the ladies for recent competitions, including Mandy Toolan to congratulate her for a recent “hole in one”. The recent men’s competition in Castlerea was won by Padraic Henry with 45 points while Christopher Foley finished second on 40. Meanwhile, the ladies’ competition was won by Catherine Collins with 39 points, just pipping Marian Caulfied, who also finished on 39, into second place. The recent Ladies’ O’Conor Don was

won by Maureen Claffey on 42 points while Dympna McDonnell was second on 41 and Deirdre Hawkshaw was third on 41. To Roscommon next, where the recent Lady Captain’s prize was won
by Noreen O’Grady. Yvonne Waldron was runner-up, Sinead Benedetti took gross and Patricia Donnelly finished third. Mark Cunniffe won the men’s Hollywood Bar singles with Richard Brown
Darts Fleming’s night! The Hollywood Bar Superleague got under way last Friday with some great darts on show. 32 of the top local darts players competed on the night for valuable rankings points and the standard did not disappoint. It all came down to
a final showdown between two of the county’s top players, Mick Egan and Sean Fleming. Egan had booked his finals spot thanks to an unbeaten run in the group stages, which was followed by wins over Pat Egan (3-0) in the Last 16, Joe Elliffe (3-0) in the Quarter-Finals and Thomas Concannon (3-2) in the SemiFinals. Egan impressed in that SemiFinal where a hard fought win was highlighted by a 14-dart leg. Fleming had swept his way to the final with some impressive wins; a last 16 win over Martin Fleming (3-0) was followed by a 3-0 win over Mick Kilroe before a hard fought 3-1 win over David Concannon in Semi-Finals, which included 16 and 17-dart legs. It was to be Fleming’s night in the end and the Ballaghaderreen man just edged an exciting final 3-2. This week’s Superleague will continue on Friday night with the draw at 8.45pm and first darts at 9pm. Entry confined to 32 registered players. Contact David on 086-0823180 for more details

Brave minor ladies fall to Lilywhites LGFA All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ Football Championship Final
KILDARE DAN DOONER
There was no fairytale ending for Roscommon’s minor ladies in their quest to land the All-Ireland ‘B’ title last Sunday as they fell at the final hurdle to an impressive Kildare side in tough conditions at Hogan Park in Moate. Roscommon had started brightly and should have been even further ahead after ten minutes when Aoife Gavin raised a green flag following some impressive attacking play from Aimee O’Connor and Sinéad Glennon. Kildare’s better use of possession began to tell as the half wore on, however, with captain Neasa Dooley prominent from frees and open play. Her first point arrived following a lung-bursting run through the heart of the Roscommon defence and that was quickly followed by a cool finish from the dead ball. Her supreme composure was also evident when she calmly rounded the impressive Sasha Lavin

in the Roscommon goal and raised her side’s first green flag after nineteen minutes. Speaking after the match, Roscommon manager, Ollie Colgan, highlighted this period as the beginning of the end for his team’s chances. “The damage was done in the second quarter, that’s when they got a run on us, and unfortunately we couldn’t get it back. We made a few changes at half-time and it worked for a while, we quelled them a bit. But we just didn’t get the breaks going forward ourselves, when you’re chasing a game it’s so hard. You have to watch to make sure you’re not too open at the back but still to try and penetrate. They kept going but it just wasn’t our day. “When you’re chasing, you’re so conscious of not making a mistake and unfortunately we did make a couple which kept them in the game. We won the second half but the gap was too much, we

were too far down, you won’t get away with that,” he said. The damage may have been done in that second quarter but Roscommon, to their credit, refused to bend the knee in the second half. A cruel Leah Hayes goal just before the break certainly didn’t help matters though and Colgan’s charges arrived at the dressing room trailing by 2-7 to 1-2. Roscommon fought tooth and nail on the resumption and their spirit was epitomised by the brave work of Megan Kelly and captain Shauna Fleming in contesting and winning possession. In fact, it was this dogged resistance which led to Roscommon’s second goal. Mikaela McHugh provided a well-timed block down on a Kildare defender, the ball ran to Kara Earle who returned it to McHugh, and she finished to the net. Roscommon’s fightback, which was aided by two more Aimee O’Connor frees, was hampered in

the closing stages when Ellen Irwin was sin binned and Kildare powered home with points from Nanci Murphy, Aislinn Dooley and Sarah Doyle. Manager Ollie Colgan said progress has been made in spite of the disappointing end to this year’s championship campaign. “It’s all about development, and getting back up to the top table from Intermediate to Senior. When you’re in games like these you like to win them, but it’s still
been a very successful year. The progress those players have made, each individual player whether they’re regular starters or one of the panellists that didn’t get quite as much game time, has been outstanding. They will benefit from it, and the clubs will benefit from it when they go back to the championship,” he concluded. Tribesmen too strong for improving U-17s Electric Ireland Connacht U-17 FC Final
GALWAY ROSCOMMON
2-13 2-9
SEAMUS DUKE
It would have been one of the greatest sporting turnarounds for many years if Roscommon had won this Connacht title, but it was not be in the Dr. Hyde Park sunshine as the young Tribesmen had just too much guile, composure and class and they deservedly took the title in this enjoyable final last Friday night. To reduce a 22 point margin to four is a measure of the progress made by this Roscommon team this summer, but they just could not bridge the gap entirely, and in truth Roscommon never looked like winning this match. However Paul Staunton’s side could legitimately look to a number of very good scoring chances that they spurned over the hour, and a lack of composure in general cost them dearly. In contrast Galway possess some wonderfully gifted attacking players like the diminutive Matthew Cooley who led the Roscommon defence a merry dance throughout. On another scorching evening, Roscommon had just as much possession early on but they had four wides on the board before they got a score. Galway were quickly out of the blocks with the aforementioned Cooley and Ryan Monahan (a ’45) on target inside the first two minutes. Roscommon were finding it difficult to get a score and Daniel Cox and Monahan (free) had added to the Galway total before Ruaidhri Fallon opened Roscommon’s account in the 16th minute. But Galway’s sharpness up front was once underlined in the 18th minute when Aidan Halloran played in Eoghan Tinney who made no mistake from close range. Points from Paul Kelly and Halloran made it 1-6 to 0-2 for Galway by the 20th minute. With Cooley, Conor Raftery and Daniel Cox causing all sorts of problems for the Roscommon defence, it was looking ominous at that stage. But in fairness to the home side they staged a mini rally close to half-time. Three points on the spin improved matters, the scores coming from Shane Cunnane and Adam McDermott (2 frees). A late point from the rampant Cooley saw Galway ahead by 1-10 to 0-6 at the break. But Roscommon were much better in the second period. The Galway attack was restricted and the likes of Jack Lohan, Shane Cunnane, Robbie Dolan, Adam McDermott and James Fitzpatrick came into the game much more. Darragh Murray was moved out to midfield and he improved in that position. Murray pointed for Roscommon

within a minute and in the 36th minute Adam McDermott had a great goal chance but he was foiled by a super save from Donie Halloran. But then in the 39th minute Roscommon were back in it with a very well taken goal. Adam McDermott’s free hit the post, Eoghan Derwin grabbed the rebound and set up Fearghus Lennon to goal from close range and now the margin was down to three. But it was Galway who kicked on again. Cooley kicked two great points from play and in the 53rd minute the Tribesmen got the clinching goal. Conor Raftery played a real captain’s part making a powerful run through the heart of the Roscommon defence and he planted the ball in the bottom corner. The margin was now eight with only seven minutes to go. In fairness to Roscommon, they never waved the white flag and kept going to the very last minute and they were rewarded when Shane Cunnane knocked the ball down to James Fitzpatrick who was fouled, and Cunanne blasted the resultant penalty to the Galway net for a consolation goal. Roscommon players and team management deserve great credit for getting to this Connacht final after the way the championship started for them. But it was not to be, and even the most committed Roscommon supporter will acknowledge that

SportsPeople Harte looks ahead to Omagh ‘acid test’ SEAMUS DUKE
Overall, Tyrone manager, Mickey Harte, was pleased with his team’s display but said the acid test would come against All-Ireland champions Dublin in Omagh on Saturday. “I’m very pleased with it. It just shows that you can get your scores in many different ways. It doesn’t have to be the orthodox old-style. If you can create scoring chances and have people to take them, that’s good for me. And we’re trying to work the best way possible for our players to play the game. That’s what we’re trying to do. This is only one day. There will be different challenges for us next week and we’ll have to see how we respond to them. We can’t be saying much about what we’re doing until we meet the acid test and the acid test is coming to Omagh (Dublin) next week. “We could have been out of it altogether on the day we played Meath in Navan. We might not have been in this place at all. We used some of our luck up that day. And then I think we learned to build on that. Sometimes you get an opportunity. It’s very fine line between a degree of success and a huge failure. So we have a degree of success at this stage and we’d like to keep it going a while longer,” he said.

‘Reviews can wait, Donegal our focus now’ – McStay SEAMUS DUKE
Roscommon manager Kevin McStay was understandably disappointed with the manner of Saturday’s defeat to Tyrone but said that any inquests would have to wait until Roscommon’s season was finished. “It was a bad day out for certain and we were found wanting in terms of the gap between the teams on so many levels. There are many lessons that we can learn from this match but we will have to assess them after this campaign is over. Today and this week is not the time to reviewing where we can improve and develop in general because we have another big game this Saturday and that has to be our focus now. We will take a look at everything when our season is over. “It has become a pattern that we are not able to back up a good performance with another one and that is one of the things we will have to look at going forward but we have to focus on the Donegal match now,” he said. Ladies footballers set for Royal County trip TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Intermediate Championship Qualifier Roscommon v Meath at Kinnegad on Saturday at 1.30 pm
SEAMUS DUKE
Following on from their excellent Connacht final victory, the Roscommon ladies footballers will travel to take on Meath in the first round qualifier on Saturday full of confidence. The Royals were in the NFL Division Three semi-finals earlier in the year. However, Roscommon played some of their best football of that league campaign when they beat Meath by two points. Meath lost to Wicklow in the Leinster Championship recently but they scored an astonishing 11-26 when defeating Fermanagh in the championship last weekend.
Roscommon face Fermanagh at a Cavan venue on July 29th. Team manager Michael Finneran will welcome back some of the players who were on the Roscommon minor team who lost out to Kildare last weekend in the All-Ireland ‘B’ final. Roscommon will be relying on the players who led them to Connacht glory a few weeks ago. Jenny Higgins, Laura Fleming, Joanne Gregg, Sheila Brady, Rebecca Finan, Sinead Kenny and Honor Ennis are sure to feature prominently to add to the younger brigade. There will not be much between the teams but the momentum generated by the Connacht final win against Sligo should be good enough to carry Roscommon through. Prediction: Roscommon
Roscommon open their 2018 championship with a home tie against a Dublin side who have already won a championship game (against Armagh) last weekend. Roscommon’s last big game was the league final loss to Kerry, but hopes are high of championship progress this summer. Roscommon have been preparing well
over the past few weeks and the return of players like Gertie Dowd, Shauna Fallon and Áine O’Meara has given the panel a boost in preparation for the game. Roscommon will be hoping that the likes of Caroline Connaughton, Siobhan Coyle, Susan Spillane, Rachel Fitzmaurice and Laura Fleming can lead their charge to add to promising young players like Rachel Dolan, Chloe WhyteLennon, Eala Coyle, Leah Rowe and Eimear McNally. Roscommon will be hoping to get to the knockout stages and a win in their opening game would be a great start. Home advantage will be crucial. Prediction: Roscommon

first score came from a Daniel Glynn point in the 35th minute but a Ben McGowan goal saw Meath run out the easiest of winners. Pride at stake as Donegal arrive All-Ireland Quarter-Final Group 2 (Round 2) Roscommon v Donegal at Dr. Hyde Park on Saturday at 5 pm SEAMUS DUKE
After getting it so wrong last weekend, it is with some trepidation that I am trying to gauge what might happen in Hyde Park on Saturday. I have written in this newspaper many times that in Roscommon we get far too excited after a win and far too down after a defeat. I include myself in that - it’s in the DNA! Since last Saturday, many experts have appeared with solutions as to how to fix the problems in the Roscommon set-up. Anyone who shells out their hard-earned money travelling to games is entitled to their opinion, but Kevin McStay and his management team know better than anyone where it is going wrong. Every so often our style of play leads to heavy defeats so must we change it in order to succeed? It would be complete madness to change our playing style this week; it just wouldn’t make any sense. But we have to tighten up in defence for sure. Roscommon people will be hoping and praying that despite the Croke Park hammering, the players can produce a positive reaction and play for pride when Donegal come to the Hyde on Saturday. It’s important to remember Roscommon were in total control in the first half against Galway in the Connacht final. Several missed chances early in the second half cost Roscommon and that was against a
team who went out and steamrolled Kerry last Sunday. Roscommon are not as bad as they showed last Sunday nor are they as good as I thought they were after the Armagh game either. So is it possible that Roscommon will be very competitive against Donegal? Definitely. Kevin McStay said that while it would be difficult to lift the players there wouldn’t be wholesale changes for this Saturday’s game. “It will not be easy to lift everyone after this but we will be looking for a reaction from the players for the game against Donegal. We will be playing for pride in the jersey and at home too, so we will be very hopeful that we can put in a good competitive display. “We played well to get to the Super 8s and now we will be trying hard to give Donegal a big game on Saturday. Remember too that they are under pressure to win so we will be determined to do well against them and that’s our main aim now,” he said. He added: “We will be making a few changes for the Donegal match but nothing drastic. We will be giving all the lads on the panel some game time before this series is over and we will review everything after that”. The decision to start Tadgh O’Rourke at centre-half back against Tyrone was a strange one indeed; I don’t think he ever played in that position before. I presume that at least one more of the forwards will be asked to drop back into defence to

provide more cover against Donegal. However, Roscommon do have a potent attacking division. Even in adversity against Tyrone, a total of 2-12 was very respectable.

So what of the opposition? Donegal will travel to Hyde Park all guns blazing knowing that a win would put them back into contention. They were reasonably competitive against Dublin, but looked like a team that knew the writing was on the wall in the last 20 minutes and they were already turning their sights to the Roscommon match at that stage. They still retain a core of very experienced players who all have major big game experience over the years. However, Paddy McBrearty is a massive loss to them and in a game like this he could have been the difference. Meanwhile, Sean Patton is a very impressive goalkeeper but Dublin made hay on his kick-outs last Saturday, pushing up and winning 11 of 26 last Saturday. It doesn’t take any great analysis to work out that a vast improvement is needed in Roscommon’s defence on Saturday. Unless Roscommon put in the tackles then another loss is a certainty because Donegal will hit hard. Donegal depend on Michael Murphy and Ryan McHugh as their playmakers and Roscommon will have to devise a plan to deal with them. Dublin brought Eoin Murchan in to man-mark Ryan McHugh last weekend and it worked well. Murchan
was mobile and followed McHugh everywhere and gave him no space at all. Murphy flits between midfield and full-forward and is a magnificent player. Roscommon have not become alsorans overnight despite what happened against Tyrone. It is easy for me to say, but on their home ground and against opposition that they should be able to compete with, I am expecting a much improved performance on Saturday. I hope that the fans come out and support the team on Saturday because there will be a big Donegal following there. Donegal, while a good side, are no world beaters. Roscommon are always a dangerous team when their backs are to the wall and I know the players will be very determined to give this game a big shot. It may be too much to expect them to win but stranger things have happened. Donegal travel knowing that a win puts them back in with a chance and that’s with a home game to come against Tyrone. If that happens it will be all over for Roscommon, with a game against Dublin to come in Croke Park, not an appetising prospect. I was wrong in my prediction last week and hope that I am wrong this week as well! Prediction: Donegal

All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Final Group 2 Round 1: Tyrone 4-24 Roscommon 2-12
Powerful Red Hand strangles Rossies The Verdict Seamus Duke The gap between the teams at the very top of the tree in Gaelic football and those further down the food chain was plain for all to see in Croke Park last Saturday when Tyrone swatted away the challenge of Roscommon with contemptuous ease in this very one-sided opening game in the newly created Super 8s competition. The thrilling win against Armagh gave many people (this writer included) a notion that Roscommon could come to Croke Park with a big chance against Mickey Harte’s men. With 20/20 vision, looking back now the facts are that Roscommon defeated a very mediocre Armagh team and that the match against Tyrone represented several steps up in terms of the quality of the opposition. The depressing thing about this loss is that there is not a lot you can say about it other than Roscommon were totally outclassed. Kevin McStay’s men were not able to deal with Tyrone’s power play and incredible counter-attacking prowess. I counted three Tyrone scores which started off with no Red Hand player in the Roscommon half at all. Yet seconds later the ball was flashed over the bar. I’m sure there were far more than three, Roscommon could not cope when Tyrone really opened up. Tyrone easily dispossessed the Roscommon players and were deadly accurate in the scoring zone. They had 13 different scorers on the day, including four defenders. Roscommon battled manfully but too often they were playing football in front of Tyrone who

waited patiently for a turnover and they made Roscommon pay time after time. The difference in physicality was huge as they pulled away in the final quarter. Tyrone players found it easy to break through the Roscommon tackling while it was the exact opposite with Roscommon players who were stopped in their tracks time after time. The fact that
scoring difference might come into play in this group did not help Roscommon either as Mickey Harte’s men kept their foot on the accelerator until the very final whistle. In fairness to Roscommon, they kept it interesting in the opening quarter but once Enda Smith gave the ball to Niall Sludden in the 11th minute to set up a move that Sludden himself finished to the net, the danger signs were there. The six points Tyrone scored without reply before halftime were a portent of what was to come. Enda Smith’s wonderful goal in the 38th minute and a couple of Roscommon points after that reduced the margin to four at one stage but it served only to prod the angry bear. The final quarter made for painful viewing for Roscommon fans as Tyrone went on a scoring spree. In fact at least three points they scored in the final period could have been goals as they toyed with Roscommon. Ronan McNamee, Tiernan McCann, Mattie Donnelly, Niall Sludden, Cathal McShane and Richard Donnelly were outstanding as they ripped into Roscommon in that second half. The morgue-like atmosphere was surreal as you could hear the shouts of the players on the field as the second half went on. Long before it was finished Tyrone fans were half way home while the Roscommon fans sat in stunned silence as the scores piled up. Cathal Compton, Ciaráin and Diarmuid Murtagh and John McManus kept the flag flying for Roscommon but in truth it was a day to forget for the Primrose and Blue players.
Of course it’s not over yet, and Donegal come to Dr. Hyde Park this weekend. The reality is however that it would be one of the sporting stories of the decade if Roscommon could win against a side who were very competitive losing to Dublin last Sunday. In most situations after a defeat there are loads of opinions about tactics, about what might have been and the set-up of the team and where players were playing etc. But when you get a beating like this there is not a lot you can say that would have made any difference. Roscommon were totally outclassed in every department. Maybe what Roscommon need is a more pragmatic defensive gameplan but that’s an argument for another day. It’s pretty obvious to say that I didn’t see this thrashing coming from last week’s preview. The gaps in standard in modern day Gaelic football are huge and growing all the time and it is a very worrying trend for the game in general. I feel sorry for the Roscommon players and the management; I know how hard they are working and the sacrifices they are making. Somehow they have to park this defeat and play for the pride of the jersey on Saturday evening in their own home ground. Will Tyrone win the All-Ireland? Probably not, and that’s the scary thing from a Roscommon point of view. They are a better team than I thought though. I don’t think Donegal are anywhere near as good as the Tyrone team we saw last Saturday, so we might have some chance this coming weekend. The excitement of
being in the Super 8s has been replaced by a sense of dread. There are two very difficult fixtures coming up for Roscommon now. Some change in a week.

All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Final Group 2 Round 1: Tyrone 4-24 Roscommon 2-12
Ciaráin Murtagh slots home Roscommon’s second goal against Tyrone at Croke Park last Saturday.
Key Moments First half The sides shared six points in a lively opening 8 minutes. Fintan Cregg, Diarmuid Murtagh and Ciaráin Murtagh (free) the Roscommon scorers. After Diarmuid Murtagh’s free put Roscommon ahead, disaster struck in the 11th minute when Enda Smith gave away the ball at midfield and four passes later Niall Sludden rattled the Roscommon net for the opening goal of the game.
Seamus Duke Second half Peter Harte pointed a Tyrone free early on before Enda Smith burst through the Tyrone cover for a quite brilliant Roscommon goal, and when Ciaráin Murtagh pointed a free shortly afterwards the margin was down to four Sludden and Diarmuid Murtagh (free) exchanged points and with 41 minutes on the clock it was Tyrone 1-12 Roscommon 1-8. all over the pitch and the ball was flying over Colm Lavin’s crossbar from all angles. By the 59th minute it was Tyrone 2-19 Roscommon 1-9.
The second Tyrone goal arrived in the 42nd minute. A sublime pass from Cathal McShane set up Conor Meyler for a really well-taken goal. Incidentally, Meyler was then promptly taken off by Mickey Harte. No resting on your laurels there!
A rare error in the Tyrone defence allowed Ciaráin Murtagh to grab a second Roscommon goal in the 60th minute but it was only brief respite as Tyrone continued their all-out assault on the Roscommon posts.
In the 6th minute of injury-time the outstanding Richard Donnelly finished off another mesmerising Tyrone move to the Roscommon net and shortly afterwards referee David Gough put us all out of our misery with the final whistle.

Roscommon’s Cathal Compton squares up to Hugh Pat McGeary during last Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Final group phase match in Croke Park.
‘Playing for pride in the jersey’ McSTAY CALLS FOR ‘BIG GAME’ ON SATURDAY Roscommon welcome Donegal to Dr. Hyde Park this Saturday at 5 pm for round two of the All-Ireland Quarter-Final phase. Both sides suffered defeats in the opening round of fixtures at Croke Park last Saturday with Roscommon losing heavily to Tyrone and Donegal competitive against Dublin. Speaking in the wake of Roscommon’s 4-24 to 2-12 drubbing at the hands of Tyrone, manager Kevin McStay said that while there would be no drastic changes, players would be playing for “pride in the jersey”. “It will not be easy to lift
everyone after this (Tyrone defeat) but we will be looking for a reaction from the players for the game against Donegal. See Seamus Duke’s big match preview on page 45…
