943,400 reasons to be cheerful… ‘House’ success a huge boost for GAA  DAN DOONER

Having netted close to €1m in a phenomenally successful ‘Win a House in Dublin’ draw, Roscommon GAA will now embark on major development plans. Roscommon GAA raised €943,400 from the Club Rossie Win a House in Dublin venture. The draw, which saw Lucan man Kumar Gangah win first prize of a €425,000 house in Ashtown, Dublin, took place last Sunday night in the Hodson Bay Hotel. The cost of running the event was €460,000, which comprised of the cost of the house at €350,000, stamp duty, legal fees and advertising. The profit

from ticket sales of over 14,000 will go towards the strategic plan of Roscommon GAA including the development of the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence and work on Dr. Hyde Park. David O’Connor, Treasurer of Roscommon GAA

said the draw would make have a big impact. “We want all our players to be the best they can be on the field and we need to develop the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence for all the players, both men and women, in Roscommon. This fundraiser

will make a tremendous difference and we’d like to particularly thank Sean Mulryan of Ballymore Properties who has been exceptionally generous to Roscommon for many, many years”.

THINGS WE DIDN’T LIKE THIS WEEK…

Trump and Santa Dolores Gacquin Solicitor Tel: 090 6478433 info@bccsolicitors.ie

FESTIVE HUMOUR On Christmas Eve, Nathan thought it would be nice to buy his wife a little gift for the next day. Always short of money, he thought long and hard about what that present might be’ Unable to decide, Nathan went to the cosmetics section in his local pharmacy and asked the girl, ‘How about some perfume?’ She showed him a bottle costing €75. ‘Too expensive,’ muttered Nathan. The young lady returned with a smaller bottle for €50. ‘Oh dear,’ Nathan moaned, ‘still far too much.’ Growing rather annoyed at Nathan’s meanness, the sales girl brought out a tiny €10 bottle and offered it to him. Nathan became really agitated, ‘What I mean’, he whined, ‘is I’d like to see something really cheap.’ So the sales girl handed him a mirror. Dean, an eleven-year-old boy, was asked to say thanks for the Christmas dinner. The family members bowed their heads in expectation. Dean began his prayer, thanking God for his Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grandma, and all his aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the stuffing, the Christmas pudding, even the cranberry sauce. Then Dean paused, and everyone waited ... and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, “If I thank God for the Brussels sprouts, won’t he know that I’m lying?” Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents. At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs. “I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE… His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother and said, “Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn’t deaf.” To which the little brother replied, “No, but Grandma is!” Best Wishes for 2019 from all at Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors Athlone, Moate, Lanesboro and Galway! Now he’s really beginning to annoy us. So, just before Christmas, Donald and Melania are doing the great Christmas PR thing-y in the White House, whereby the US President and the First Lady ring children and discuss the imminent visit of Santa. The following mindboggling exchange featured. President Trump: “Are you still a believer in Santa?” Girl (aged 7): “Yes, sir” President Trump: “Because at seven, that’s marginal, right?” The girl later confirmed that she didn’t understand the word ‘marginal’ and that she does believe in Santa. And it seems that millions of Americans still believe in Trump!

No beds, no change According to the INMO (Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation), the year which has just come to an end was the worst one on record for hospital overcrowding. The representative body says that 108,227 patients went without hospital beds last year – a record high. Until this appalling trend is reversed – and significantly so – the platitudes of the rather self-righteous Minister Harris count for nothing…in fact they are arguably insulting.

Going back to work… Yes, going back to work is certainly one of the ‘things’ about this week that we didn’t like. Now where exactly did that Christmas break go?

THINGS WE DID LIKE THIS WEEK…

House of the Rising Sum… The Club Rossie Win A House in Dublin fundraiser was a massive success, and we liked that. Funds raised will go towards the strategic plan for Roscommon GAA, including the development of the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence and progressing Hyde Park. And those funds? Well, after an understandably slow/ steady start, the draw gained massive momentum in recent weeks – thanks in part to marketing, and also to the massive effort expended. By last weekend, over 14,000 tickets had been sold. Roscommon GAA has gained to the tune of almost €1m. Brilliant.

A feast of soccer Yes, we can’t wait for the GAA to return, but we enjoy our soccer too, and – as ever – the festive period didn’t disappoint, with lots of exciting action ‘cross-channel’. Not forgetting all the festive horseracing, of course. In the Premier League, Liverpool have suddenly gone into orbit, and in swashbuckling style, and the huge number of ‘Pool fans in Co. Roscommon are understandably beginning to believe that a return to the summit might just become a reality in 2019. Manchester City are really rocked, though they got back to winning ways after losing three league games out of four. The sides meet tonight. Meanwhile, in The Championship, ‘my’ team, Leeds, have managed the impressive feat of remaining top of the league while losing two games in a row. ‘Squeaky bum’ time’s starting earlier than ever…

Starting again… A New Year began. It’s a time of renewal, of hope, of looking forward. Hopefully it will be a great year for Roscommon, Ireland, the world. Happy New Year!

Possibly the last ‘Major news stories of 2018’ listing… We’ve racked our brains (well, we may have googled a little) and come up with even more of those dubious ‘review of the year’ features…just a small one…here’s five major news stories/highlights of 2018…

1: WEATHER WONDERS It was a year of weather highs and lows. In January, Storm Eleanor struck. In March, Storm Emma (also dubbed ‘The Beast from The East’). In July, a fabulous heatwave (though it did lead to water shortages). More of that sunshine in 2019, please!

2: TWO WORLD CUPS… The soccer World Cup in Russia was very enjoyable. Contrary to expectations, the event was well run, and there was no violence on the terraces or outside the grounds. There was lots of drama (several of the usual contenders went out early), some super giantkilling, several great matches and many memorable goals. Not to mention VAR! England over-achieved by reaching the semi-finals. It was a great campaign for Gareth Southgate & Co. France were deserved winners,

after a cracking final against Croatia. One of the great sporting stories of the year was the sensational run by the Irish team to the final of the 2018 Women’s Hockey Word Cup. A brilliant achievement, it was history in the making: the first Irish team, male or female, to reach a World Cup Final.

3: THAT REFERENDUM Whether you were for or against, there’s no doubt that the Eighth Amendment Abortion Referendum was an historic event for the nation. Here in Roscommon/Leitrim, a constituency which attracted international media focus, we voted 58%42% for repeal.

4: PAPAL VISIT Yes, it was a visit which attracted some critics (mainly before it began), and it certainly – and rightly – brought Church abuse scandals centre stage…but there were many special moments during the visit to Ireland of the charismatic Pope Francis.

5: BREXIT You must have heard?

Our Person(s) of the Week… David O’Connor The successful Club Rossie ‘Win a House in Dublin’ draw involved hard work on the part of many people, including Pat Compton, Chairperson of Club Rossie. Congratulations to all involved. A special word of congrats to that very passionate Roscommon GAA man David O’Connor (County Board Treasurer) whose brainchild the project was. before the festivities begin. Solving world poverty or climate change isn’t easy – but try getting a ‘haircut for Christmas’! It’s almost impossible… It’s our own fault. We all know, say three weeks before the Christmas rush, that we are probably due a haircut, and that we’d really better think about getting one…what with Christmas coming up and all that. Every morning, we remind ourselves. ‘Must get a haircut’. It’s all part of the mad pre-Christmas panic, the obsession with trying to have everything perfect for the one day that, like any other, will indeed come and pass. Two weeks before Christmas, it began to weigh on my mind. ‘Need a haircut, really need to get that haircut’. But it was so busy at work…and the hours and days race on. When you eventually get to the barber’s a couple of days before Christmas, your heart sinks. Because there’s usually a very long queue already in place, as the frantic ‘Must get a haircut before Christmas’ obsession takes full effect. Next year it will be different, and I’ll hopefully be seeing a friendly barber at the end of November…

Not for us, thanks…

Another er…great Christmas tradition in recent years is that old reliable… ‘Spotting the mad young ones doing the 12 pubs’. I don’t go out of my way to witness this dubious phenomenon, but on a couple of occasions in recent years I have come across ‘edited highlights’…seldom, if ever, from inside a pub, because most people over the age of 30 try to avoid the ‘12 pubs brigade’. This year, I knew it was ‘12 pubs evening’ when I saw two young lads coming down the street as ‘wheelbarrows,’ i.e. the two lads with their hands on the pavements as their friends held their legs and

shoppers of Roscommon town gone bread-crazy again, this time on New Year’s Eve presumably? I ventured into a fourth shop. Approaching the rows of shelves, I saw what appeared to be two isolated brown sliced pans. A man stood by. On the shelf above, there was a solitary white batch loaf. I hadn’t time to get my hopes up. Having given the two brown loaves some thought, the man placed his hands on the ‘white batch’ and made off with the prize. So there you go. It’s happened again. There was – of course – an outcry. Well, one woman commented. “Not a single loaf of (white) bread to be found in town” the lady beside me lamented (in that fourth shop). “And I could have thrown bread out last week”. Normal service has now resumed – until the next crisis. Happiness is…Christmas in Roscommon town. Pictured enjoying the build-up to Christmas in Roscommon town. Picture: Michael McCormack.

steered them towards the next pub. Personally, I’d have walked. I gather that on the morning after the night before, there was a hangover for publicans and other businesses, with a trail of broken glasses on pavements. To be fair to all ’12 pubs’ participants, there were absolutely no reports of ‘trouble’ – but some glasses didn’t survive the partying. Happily, Christmas cheer overcame the over-exuberant Christmas ‘Cheers!’ of the previous night as locals invoked the ‘meitheal’ spirit of old and quickly returned the town to its familiar glory.

A joyous atmosphere Church ceremonies were extremely well attended over the Christmas period. There was a great, joyous vibe throughout the festive season. In Roscommon town, the airing of Christmas carols/songs – a Chamber of Commerce initiative – creates a lovely

seasonal atmosphere. All parts of Co. Roscommon benefitted from the return of ‘Rossies’ from abroad and from other parts of the country.

All the bread’s gone…again 4.30 pm, New Year’s Day: In the first shop I went into, there was no bread. No need to panic, surely? But there was no bread in the second shop either. Wow! Suddenly, a sense of déjà vu came over me. Storm clouds gathering in my mind, although no storm had been forecast, not like last March, when trepidation in advance of the imminent arrival of ‘The Beast from the East’ led to the Great Bread Disappearance. Back to last Tuesday: I tried a third shop, this time a ‘superstore’…where, incredibly, massive rows of bread shelves were utterly devoid of bread. Not a single loaf, not a crumb. What calamity had befallen? Had the

The question we all wanted the answer to… I didn’t get to the Hodson Bay Hotel on Sunday evening to collect my new house, but as evening became night I remained quietly confident that the good folk

in Roscommon GAA would ring any moment with the good news. I didn’t even get to watch what I gather was a highly professional event (live on Facebook), as we had visitors that evening. Obviously I struggled to focus on what our visitors were saying/doing as I continued to visualise turning the key in our new house in the New Year. With the hours passing and no sign of the phone to ring, I did begin to wonder if something had gone wrong. And, if we’d won, surely Willie Hegarty would have called in with a broad smile when passing our house on the way home? Eventually, the social media monster revealed all (basically our visitors left) and the waiting was over. It turned out that a staggering 14,000 plus tickets had been sold. Like everyone else, I was curious to see who’d won. Was it a well-known local? Was it even a local? It wasn’t. It was Kumar Gangah from Dublin, and congratulations to him. The draw was a tremendous success, suffice to say – you can read all about it on pages 18 & 19. In the meantime, it’s back to the Lotto…

€14.3m boost for roads Deputy Denis Naughten and Senator Frank Feighan have both welcomed the allocation of €14.3m by Transport Infrastructure Ireland in the national road network throughout County Roscommon. The investment includes

€4m for the new section of road at the Hill of Oran, resurfacing of Athleague village and the town of Castlerea, and the upgrading of sections of the Boyle to Athlone road. Deputy Naughten (right) said that funding of €3m

has also been set aside to complete the planning and design for the new N5 road between Ballaghaderreen and Scramogue which will not only improve access to the West but also “allow for the future development of Strokestown, Tulsk, Bel-

Huge challenges ahead in 2019

Minister Shane Ross

Minister Paschal Donohoe

So we have reached 2019, and at the start of a new year there is always a case for renewed hope on all fronts. We certainly hope that it will be a safe, successful and healthy year for us and our families. But, as we look into the distance, there are huge challenges ahead. We are constantly being told that Ireland’s economy has the biggest growth rate in the EU – and there is no doubt that there has been a recovery in our economic fortunes. Leo Varadkar, Paschal Donohoe and their government colleagues have taken credit for our improved circumstances – and that’s fair enough. Employment, in particular, is plentiful, and the most important aspect of any economy is the ability to offer our young people a chance to work in jobs that will provide them with a reasonable standard of living. We are, at least, doing that. However, as we enter 2019, we are living in an Ireland where many of those young people who

have good jobs – such as Gardai, teachers, nurses, prison officers and others in the civil service – have no chance of ever owning their own house, particularly if they live close to any of our bigger towns and cities. In fact they are struggling to even rent accommodation as prices are spiralling almost month by month. We have over 10,000 people homeless, and despite many fine words and countless plans from Government ministers, that problem is getting worse. We have a health system which is bursting at the seams, with hundreds of thousands of people on waiting lists and sick people lying on trolleys in our hospital A&E units as overworked staff struggle to cope. These problems simply have to be addressed and it is not good enough to fob people off by saying that “we are doing our best”. Here in Roscommon, we have the same problems which are being encountered in most rural counties. We have very few young

people around…except for an odd weekend, and Christmas and Easter. I fully realise that they have to chase the jobs in Dublin and Galway and the bigger cities, but nothing has been done to create employment within our county. Or if efforts are being made, they haven’t been successful. Roscommon is a great county to live in, but ask the personnel at any small GAA club about the alarming fall in the number of young people that are available to play and train on a weekly basis. It’s a symptom of modern-day rural Ireland. The Government has been paying lip service to rural Ireland, and we have the likes of Shane Ross –who frankly hasn’t a clue about rural Ireland – making rules and regulations that will have far-reaching effects on the way of life of people who live in counties like Roscommon. I haven’t mentioned Brexit – or the personal debt crisis – both of which are huge issues for people in Ireland as we head into 2019. So

Leo, Paschal and the rest will have to roll up their sleeves and address the many problems that we have as we head into 2019. A lot done maybe, but very much more to do. Happy New Year to one and all!

The likes of Shane Ross… who hasn’t a clue about rural Ireland, is making rules and regulations that will have far-reaching effects on the way of life of people in Roscommon

Tributes to Lecarrow man after tragic death in Athlone Trevor Brennan widely mourned Tributes have been paid to young Lecarrow man, Trevor Brennan, who tragically drowned after falling into the River Shannon in Athlone last Sunday night. It is understood that the popular 34-year-old farmer had been phoning for a taxi when he slipped and fell into the water at Quay Wall (behind Sean’s Bar) at approximately 11.20 pm. He was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, where was pronounced dead at 3 am. A statement from Lough Ree RNLI read: ‘At 11.25 pm on Sunday Lough Ree RNLI volunteers were alerted by the Irish Coast Guard in Malin Head to reports of a person in the water at Athlone town on the quays between the Castle and Sean’s Bar. Athlone Sub Aqua Club were also alerted to the incident.

‘We have lost a great club member, player and friend in Trevor Brennan’

‘The volunteer crew on board the inshore lifeboat, The Eric Rowse, were quickly on scene and immediately commenced a search for the person. They were joined by members of Athlone Sub Aqua Club. Conditions at the time were very calm with partial visibility due to darkness. ‘A casualty was taken from the water and handed into the care of HSE Paramedics who were waiting on the quay side and brought to hospital. ‘Athlone Gardai have sadly confirmed that the person subsequently passed away. ‘Lough Ree RNLI and Athlone Sub Aqua Club would like to extend their sincere condolences to the

family at this time’. Mr. Brennan had been a valued member of both St. John’s Athletic and St. Dominic’s GAA and both clubs as well as neighbouring GAA club St. Brigid’s paid tribute to him earlier this week. St. John’s Athletic posted an emotional tribute on social media: ‘It is with great sadness we announce that we have lost a great club member, player and friend in Trevor Brennan. ‘His sudden and untimely passing has brought big shock and sadness to our club and community. ‘On behalf of everyone at St. John’s Athletic we wish to pass on our condolences to

Trevor’s family and friends.’ St. John’s’ Roscommon & District Football League Challenge Cup game against Castlerea Celtic B, which was scheduled to take place this Saturday, has been postponed as a mark of respect. St. Dominic’s GAA described Trevor as a “loyal player and supporter”: ‘As 2018 draws to a close, we were very sad to learn…of the tragic loss of club member and friend, Trevor Brennan. ‘Trevor was a loyal player and supporter of St. Dominic’s for the duration of his short life. His sudden and untimely passing has brought great shock and sadness to the entire community. ‘As we wish all our players, supporters, members and management teams a very Happy New Year we ask everyone to spare a thought for Trevor’s family at this very difficult time and keep them in your prayers.’ Kiltoom club St. Brigid’s said “neighbour and friend” Trevor had been a “huge support” to the club during the 2017 Sheep Shearing Festival held at the club. The late Trevor Brennan is mourned by his parents, John and Marie, brother Declan and sister Sonya, brother-inlaw Ciaran, Declan’s partner Edel, grandparents Teresa and Annie, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and many friends. Funeral Mass takes place today (Thursday) in St. John’s Church, Lecarrow at 11 am with burial afterwards in the local cemetery.

Anger as items stolen from ‘up to 15 graves’ Gorthaganny Cemetary vandalism There is widespread local anger following the theft of items including lights and ornaments from up to 15 graves in Gorthaganny Cemetery on Saturday, December 29th. The act of vandalism is believed to have taken place between 12 noon and 2 pm and family members have since spoken out against the horrific act. Local woman, Joanne Jordan, whose father’s

grave was affected, recently contacted the Roscommon People to voice her anger. “Christmas lights and ornaments are missing from about 15 graves and some of the lights were later discovered thrown over a wall nearby. I had placed flowers on my father’s grave on Christmas Eve to mark his anniversary and we then went back down with the ornaments after Christmas. “It’s horrific to think that someone could do something like this and there is tremendous anger among the families affected,” she said. Castlerea Gardaí are investigating the incident and anyone with any information is asked to contact them on 094-9621630.

People NEWS Pivotal role of School Secretaries must be recognised – Kerrane Sinn Féin spokesperson for Roscommon Claire Kerrane has said that the pivotal role played by School Secretaries in schools across the State must be recognised by the Government. Ms. Kerrane said: “School Secretaries are at the coalface of the school community every day. They are the key point of contact between schools and parents, parents and teachers, and schools and the Department of Education & Skills. They play a pivotal role in the day to day running of schools, yet they are totally undervalued. “There is a two-tier pay system at play when it comes to School Secretaries. Over 10% of School Secretaries are paid directly by the Department and earn between €24,000 and €44,711 per annum, the remaining majority are paid through the ancillary grant paid to the school’s Board of Management – this amounts to a salary of about €12,702 per annum. Yet, those paid by the Department directly and those paid by the ancillary grant do the exact same job with no difference in their responsibilities”. Ms. Kerrane added: “This means that the vast majority of School Secretaries are very poorly paid, with uncertain, precarious contracts…and many of them are forced to sign on for jobseekers payments during the summer months. They have no occupational pension, no entitlement to sick leave and no incremental pay increases. “This is an intolerable situation that has been allowed to continue for far too long. We need to see School Secretaries who are paid under the ancillary grant moved onto the payment grades as per those paid directly by the Department”.

Local storyteller set for TV appearance! Funding to help victims of domestic and sexual violence Senator Frank Feighan has welcomed funding for local organisations which are providing support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. The local groups were among 57 organisations nationally who benefitted from an annual funding allocation of €1.712m, announced by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan. The local organisations who received funding for their valuable work are: Roscommon Safe Link in Boyle which offers information, support and counselling to women who have experienced domestic violence and abusive situations; Hope Trust, which provides coun-

selling services for victims of crime in Galway and Roscommon; The Domestic Violence Advocacy Centre in Sligo which provides support and assistance in Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan; and Esker House Women’s Refuge, which provides vital services in Westmeath and Roscommon. Senator Feighan said: “Supports provided by these organisations include the provision of practical information; emotional support; court accompaniment; accompaniment to Garda interviews; accompaniment to sexual assault treatment units; counselling and referral to other services”.

Dublin-Galway Greenway back on track Local TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the allocation of €200,000 by Transport Infrastructure Ireland for the design of a new greenway route between Galway and Athlone. Denis Naughten says he has consistently called for a completely new plan which would first look to the lands held in State control before any route is decided. He said: “Land held in private ownership should only be considered when we have availed of all possible options through State owned land and only then

with the approval of the landowner. “This funding of €200,000 will now start a new process of designing a cycle route west of Athlone to Galway City and provides huge opportunities to support local job creation through tourism. “This project will also help to support the new tourism brand for East Galway & Roscommon, called Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, which ties in with the promotion of the Suck Valley Way and the Hymany Way” concluded Denis Naughten.

Highlighting the many benefits of the Slimming World group environment, Carol recently said: “Slimming World changed my life and now I am enjoying helping people to change theirs. I joined Slimming World over four years ago as I was overweight and very unhappy with my size. I couldn’t believe all of the food I could enjoy while still losing weight! Slimming World’s food optimising plan is not a diet, it is a healthy eating plan. It’s about making small changes to how we shop, cook and eat. It encourages us to fill up on delicious healthy foods and never go hungry. I lost over two and a half stone and have kept it off too. “In 2018 my members shed an amazing 3,347 pounds – that’s over 239 stone! 37 members have made improvements to their health by losing 10% of their overall weight and have earned a ‘Club 10’ award. So far we have also helped 25 members achieve their dream target weight. These members are not only healthier, happier and now have more energy but are now free to attend Slimming World for life! They have learned how to enjoy their food without going hungry and have an occasional treat so they won’t feel deprived. Most of them are much more active than ever before too and have found a new zest for life! “Slimming World is suitable for both men and women, including diabetics and expectant mums. We also welcome young people between the ages of 11 and 15 free with an attending parent. “Weight loss does not have to be boring or a chore. It can be an enjoyable experience with like- minded people in a caring and supportive environment. We meet every Saturday morning at 9.30 am. We enjoy a tea or coffee and celebrate our successes and share recipe ideas, hints and tips with each other as well as having a bit of fun too. “If you would like to lose some weight and become healthier as we head into 2019 contact me on 0866006866 or come along next Saturday morning. I can assure you of a warm welcome and I will support you to help you achieve your dream target weight. If you had past attempts at weight loss and did not succeed please don’t give up. Slimming World Boyle’s 2018 Woman of the Year!

A super slimmer has been named as Boyle’s Slimming World ‘Woman of the Year’ 2018 thanks to her life-changing 4-stone weight loss. Marguerita from Boyle has gone from 16st 6½ lbs to 12st 3lbs in just 16 months – that’s size 20 to size 12! She said: “In April 2016 I decided if I got fit the weight would drop off. I started aquafit because of my back and as I got stronger I started parkrun. I kept at it for a full year and had lost no weight. I needed to address my relationship with food and I joined Slimming World in May 2017. “That first week I was amazed that I lost 7 lbs. I had eaten so much and enjoyed cooking meals from scratch with a few changes that made them Slimming World-friendly. I realised that food optimising and body magic together were going to get me the results I wanted! “I feel like a different woman to the one who walked into Slimming World 16 months ago and winning Woman of the Year is a real honour be-

cause there are so many amazing and inspirational women in our group including our fantastic leader Tracy. “I am proud of how far I have come. I am a good role model for my children. My goal now is to hit my target and stay there for life, which I know I can do”. Tracy, who runs the Boyle group, was understandably proud: “She’s a fantastic ambassador for Slimming World and what she’s achieved is nothing short of incredible. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires others to change their lives in the same way”. Boyle Slimming World group meets every Thursday at 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm at The Spool Factory and Tracy also runs the Roscommon groups in Gleeson’s every Monday morning at 9.30 am and on Wednesdays at 9.30 am, 5 pm and 7 pm. Patricia’s golden weight loss tips! Slimming World Castlerea group leader Patricia Keegan provides some golden weight loss tips as Slimming World celebrates 50 years of helping millions of people to reach their dream weight. 1. Make small and simple swaps With Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, members are encouraged to make small and simple swaps like switching from oil to low-calorie cooking spray and full-fat butter to low-fat spread, and swapping the white bread for wholemeal bread. 2. Plan, plan, plan! Losing weight is much easier when you get in the habit of planning your meals for the week. Pick meals that you know you’ll enjoy, try new dishes to keep things interesting and

make a shopping list – it’s impossible to enjoy healthy meals if you don’t have the foods you need to make them in your kitchen! 3. Get support When you’re losing weight, having a strong support system around you is vital. If you join a Slimming World group your fellow members, who are all on the same journey as you, will celebrate with you and boost your weight loss when you’re doing well, and pick you up if you ever have a more difficult week. 4. Get active At Slimming World we encourage our members to make simple swaps – from taking the lift and using the car for short journeys to taking the stairs and walking to the shops. Increase your activity levels gradually

until you reach the recommended level of 30 minutes five times a week. 5. Track your progress Having a visual reminder of your long-term goal is a great way to help you stay on track with your weight-loss journey. Not only is it a great way to see the amazing progress you’re making, it’s a good way to keep yourself inspired and committed. Some members recommend using measurement charts and progress pictures to keep them motivated – not only will they remind you why you’re losing weight, they’re fun too! The Castlerea Slimming World group is held every Wednesday at 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm at O’Rourke GAA Centre, The Demesne, Castlerea. For further information please contact Patricia on 087-8581325. 30 Air Ambulance missions in Roscommon last year The Irish Air Corps recently revealed that it staged 310 successful Air Ambulance missions in 2018 with 30 of those missions taking place in Co. Roscommon. Mayo was the county with most operations with 49 incidents requiring the ambulance taking critically ill patients to hospital. Second was Galway with 36 missions and figures from the Department of Defence show that Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Clare and Tipperary accounted for 53% of the overall missions completed in 2018.

The dedicated Air Corps Augusta Westland 139 helicopter if based at Custume Barracks in Athlone. Independent TD Denis Naughten has said he will fight for expansion of the service this year. “As part of the commitments which I received on the formation of this Government, during 2019 we will see the expansion of this air ambulance service, with a second air ambulance in the southern part of Ireland. “The second air ambulance will take pressure off the service based in Athlone and allow it to

respond to note emergencies throughout the west of Ireland”. “There is no doubt that there are local people alive today, because they have had access to this vital air ambulance service and I intend to continue to fight for an expansion of this service,” he said. Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan said the service, combined with a team of advanced paramedics and the ground ambulance service “has and continues to save countless lives in this region”. “Since the commencement of the EAS Serv-

Senator Frank Feighan

ice in June 2012, the Air Corps has completed more than 2,300 missions throughout the country. The Air Corps also provided 44 inter-hospital Air Ambulance service support in response to medical emergencies,” he said.

RSG launches new 16-seater accessible bus means replacing and modernising our transport fleet is a challenge we work hard to meet in order to provide a lifeline without which people would be isolated and confined to their homes. “We are growing…and working hard to demonstrate our accessibility and inclusiveness. We recognise that social inclusion is vital so we have embraced a new initiative called New Directions, which states that 12 supports should be available to people using services…the idea is that people can live their lives in accordance with their individual hopes, needs and wishes. “We are also a HSE funded Home Care Services for Older People and PA services for people with disabilities in the community. Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy addresses the crowd at an anti-eviction rally in Strokestown on December 23rd. Pics: Mick McCormack

Almost 1,500 people attend Strokestown anti-eviction rally Approximately 1,500 people attended a public demonstration in Strokestown on Sunday, December 23rd in order to protest against the recent repossession of a home in the Falsk area. The public rally passed off without incident with a number of Gardaí in attendance as a number of public representatives addressed the crowd. Most of the speakers, which included several members of Sinn Féin as well as Roscommon TD Michael Fitzmaurice and local councillors, were well received, but Fianna Fáil TD and Strokestown native, Eugene Murphy was booed and heckled throughout his speech and prevented from continuing. Those in attendance were protesting over the recent repossession of the McGann family home by KBC Bank. Family members returned to live in the home after a group of men attacked security men and burnt out six vehicles at the property days after the eviction. There is no suggestion that the McGann family were involved in the incident. There were people from across the west of Ireland present at the Strokestown protest on December 23rd, with Sinn Féin particularly prominent.

McGanns: ‘We made offers to bank’ Leading up to the protest, the McGann family had appealed for calm in a statement released through Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy. “The McGanns have again expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support they have received from the public since the ordeal of their eviction but again reiterated their desire for privacy. They have also requested that the media refrain

from publishing non-verified and incorrect reports regarding their personal finances. While they themselves do not want to enflame the speculation they are adamant that reports suggesting that they have not engaged with KBC bank are untrue. On several occasions, the family tell me, they had made offers of repayment schedules to the bank which were always refused.

“While thanking all those who have offered support to their plight they wish to state that the issues regarding the treatment by banks and vulture funds towards families who find themselves in financial distress are much greater than themselves. They therefore welcome all peaceful campaigning that brings attention to this important issue,” Mr. Carthy stated.

The Sinn Féin MEP added that the family had called on those protesting to do so in a “peaceful and unobtrusive” manner and distanced themselves from the ‘yellow vest’ movement made famous by protests in France and which has since been imitated in this country. “In particular they wish to distance themselves from any reference

to imitations of the ‘yellow-vest’ or alt-right movements. The Irish people have a proud history of resisting forced evictions, a history that has been marked by community-led and people-centred protests. The McGanns feel strongly that it is in line with this tradition that government policy and the oppressive actions of banks and vulture funds will be addressed”.

Roscommon GAA nets €943,400 from ‘Win a House’ project  DAN DOONER

Roscommon GAA netted close to €1m – €943,400 to be precise – from the recent Club Rossie Win a House in Dublin fundraiser. The draw, which saw Lucan man Kumar Gangah win first prize of a €425,000 house in Ashtown, Dublin, took place last Sunday night in the Hodson Bay Hotel. The cost of running the event was €460,000, which comprised of the cost of the house at €350,000, stamp

duty, legal fees and advertising. The profit from ticket sales of over 14,000 will go towards the strategic plan of Roscommon GAA including the development of the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence and work on Dr. Hyde Park. David O’Connor, Treasurer of Roscommon GAA County Board and founder of Club Rossie, said that running the finances in a county like Roscommon is challenging but that the County Board had big ambitions.

“We want all our players to be the best they can be on the field and we need to develop the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence for all the players, both men and women, in Roscommon. This fundraiser will make a tremendous difference and we’d like to particularly thank Sean Mulryan of Ballymore Properties who has been exceptionally generous to Roscommon for many many years”. Pat Compton, Chairperson of Club Rossie, said

8th prize (A pair of All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final tickets): Tom McGuire, Co. Dublin.

the campaign, which lasted 111 days, brought fundraising in the county to “new levels”. He praised the hard-working committee. “We were delighted to be able to donate €10,000 to the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice as part of the campaign. The Club Rossie team are all volunteers who don’t receive expenses or payments for their work. They are a pleasure to deal with and just get on with the job”. Aidan Brady, project manager of the venture, said the campaign to raise over €1,400,000 was based on running a comprehensive sales and marketing effort which included out of home advertising as well as executing a very significant digital advertising campaign across social platforms. Finally, Chairperson of Roscommon GAA Seamus Sweeney commented: “This is a game-changer for Roscommon GAA financially. It sets us up for the future and I’d like to pay tribute to the Club Rossie team who since their launch in 2014 have professionalised fundraising in Roscommon and made an exceptional contribution to the county”.

‘The drama and tension rose even further …then the golden ticket was produced…’  SEAMUS DUKE

Fundraising isn’t easy. Anyone who has ever been part of any voluntary organisation or charity knows what I mean. Roscommon is a small county. There is huge interest in the GAA here, but the cost of running the association had spiralled out of control in recent years. Many great people had battled hard to keep the show on the road over the past two decades, but mostly they were putting out fires all over the place. The struggles were ongoing and the situation was not improving. But in the space of 16 weeks at the end of 2018, Club Rossie embarked on one of the most ambitious fundraisers ever seen in a small county like ours. They were putting a house up as

the main prize in a draw, with the tickets costing €100. The aim was to sell 15,000 tickets – which was an outrageous target. With County Board Treasurer David O’Connor (his brainchild) driving the effort on, Club Rossie supremo Pat Compton and his team set about their task. As the weeks went by the total number of tickets sold was mounting, but it was in the last few weeks that the numbers really exploded. At about 8.55 pm on Sunday night, Willie Hegarty appeared on the Club Rossie Facebook page, live from the Hodson Bay Hotel. The preliminaries were reasonably brief. There was a nervous excitement among those gathered there. Seamus Sweeney, Pat Compton, Aidan Brady and representatives of ladies football, hurling and

camogie spoke to Willie. But really all anyone wanted to know was…who would win the big prize! We were told the logistics of the draw and how it would work and then we heard from the new Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham as he looked forward to the opening of the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence. Then, all was ready. A big perspex drum was on stage…with the numbers of all the sold tickets inside. The first ticket out would be the winner of that €425,000 house in Ashtown in Dublin. There was a delay as a few of the tickets were getting stuck against the surface of the drum, so another few spins were needed. The drama and tension rose even further. The golden ticket was produced but it was a number, and not a name – that would come lat-

er. The rest of the prizes were drawn, but everyone still wanted to know who had won the house. David O’Connor, the County Board treasurer and the man behind the fundraiser, then took to the stage. The effort that he and his team had made and the realisation of the huge success the whole operation had been was almost too much for David as he became very emotional at the start of his interview. But he wasn’t long settling into it, as he revealed that an incredible 14,034 tickets were sold and that the profit would be €943,000. They are mindboggling figures in anyone’s language. Mr. O’Connor said that he hoped that the turning of the sod on the Centre of Excellence would take place “in the spring” and that he wanted Dr. Hyde Park to be brought up to a standard

which will ensure it can host Connacht finals. With the figures he had just read out, anything was now possible. Then, after reading out all the other winners first, Willie revealed that the winner of the house was Kumar Gangah from Lucan in Co. Dublin. What a prize for anyone to win – well done to him! Then it was all over. After almost three months of the most intensive fundraising effort ever seen in our county, those involved were able to sit back and reflect on a magnificent venture, an unprecedented one in Roscommon. It goes to show what can be achieved with a professional approach backed by people with passion and commitment for the cause. Well done to all concerned.

€10,000 donation to Hospice Roscommon GAA and Club Rossie are donating €10,000 to the Roscommon/Mayo Hospice from their Win a House in Dublin campaign. The funds will be ring-fenced for the building of the Roscommon Hospice. Martina Jennings, CEO of Roscommon/Mayo Hospice, said: “We are so grateful to Club Rossie for choosing a local charity to benefit from their kind donation. The money will be ring-fenced into the Roscommon Hospice

building fund, which will be completed by January 2021”. Aidan Brady, speaking on behalf of Club Rossie, commented: “We have been overwhelmed by the support for our Win a House in Dublin campaign. The Roscommon/ Mayo Hospice is a vital resource in the west of Ireland and we’re delighted to be in a position to donate €10,000 to this very worthy cause”. Seamus Sweeney, Chairman of Roscom-

mon GAA, added: “The Win a House in Dublin campaign from the Club Rossie team is a gamechanger for Roscommon GAA. We are delighted to now be in a position to help the Hospice as a result of this campaign and look forward to building on our long-standing relationship with the Hospice over the coming years”. The Roscommon/Mayo Hospice are the official charity partner of Roscommon GAA and Club Rossie for 2019 and 2020.

Miriam’s MUSINGS Privileged Spencer needs a lesson in parenting, 2019-style… Words of wit and wisdom with MIRIAM KERINS

Pictured is Daniel O’Loughlin, Ardsallaghbeg, Co. Roscommon, who was conferred with an MSc in Finance from Trinity College Dublin. Son of Gerard and Valerie O’Loughlin, Daniel has now joined the ratings agency S&P Global. Pic: Lafayette Photography

Pictured is Jerome Kelly, Doughill, Co. Roscommon who recently graduated with an Honours Degree in Business and Sport Tourism from Athlone IT.

Apparently the Edmund Hillary of social climbing, (he’s related to royalty don’t ya know), and smitten-kitten new dad, (he’s been parenting for all of five minutes), Spencer Matthews is such a dab hand at raising his baby son, he’s been sharing his newfound skills with us mere mortals via Hello! Magazine, saying: “So far, it hasn’t been a particularly stressful experience. If your child is screaming his head off, he’s either too hot, too cold, tired or hungry. People make it sound like rocket science and it’s not”. Wow, thanks Spence love…and, while I really do hate the shrewish tone in my voice right now, as you gaze down upon us less stinkin’ rich parents from your cloud nine throne to impart this well-meant insightful little nugget pet, I’m going to tell you that your guidance is probably about as puerile as privileged Leo Varadkar pledging that he’s going to do something to prevent Irish people being forcibly thrown out of their homes in 2019! Look, call me cynical readers, but if you’re a new parent, or indeed, are about to welcome that glorious little bundle into your life in 2019, as an experienced, (imperfect) mother myself, I’m going to tell you that anyone who thinks parenting is a breeze, (a la Spencer), is not only faking it…they’re failing it; or rather, they’re totally out of touch with the highs, lows, joyous wonders and, sometimes the overwhelm-

ing woes and anxieties that welcoming a precious new life can bring. You see, here’s the reality folks…until you’ve spent hours gnawing at the inside of your cheek as you try to soothe your adored newborn infant as her gut-wrenching colicky screams penetrate your very heart, while at the same time make a nutritious dinner from scratch and prepare a PowerPoint presentation for your husband explaining why empty milk cartons belong in the bin instead of the fridge, and scream that just once, you’d like to go into the bathroom and sit on a dry toilet seat, (all of which I’ve done), then I’m afraid you should not be taking advice from some rich molly-coddled, socialite/reality star. It stands to reason that only those parents who’re mega-minted enough to have the spondulicks to hire a housekeeper and a nanny who can be on hand to tackle the night feeds and the dirty nappy changes, will, a week following their child’s birth, be capable of stepping out looking like a male model to attend a luxury car launch, a la ‘childcare expert’ daddy Spencer. And didn’t he look buff! Yes, rich parents with means, royal connections and personal trainers/stylists, don’t suffer from sleep deprivation; nor are they (like me), forced to hyperventilate to the point of collapse while trying to suck my post baby-

Spencer Matthews

belly out through my ass while I struggled to drag on a pair of pre-pregnancy jeans, which were pinned together beneath a baggy jam-stained jumper just so I could feel ‘normal’ again! However, I will give Spencer some credit for the way he praises wifey Vogue Williams, saying she’s an “exceptional mother,” adding how he’s “always been in awe of my wife, in many aspects, and being a mother is certainly her finest achievement”. Ah, now fair play to him. And, while, following my children’s births, I wasn’t exactly rushing to take out a membership of martyredmothers.ie, I was a bit (okay a lot) annoyed that

nobody (okay their dad), didn’t declare how gloriously wonderful I was following my very difficult labours. Now while I know that I, and every other exceptional Roscommon mammy out there realises that, deep in our hearts, (and rooted in our stretch-marks), we’re all just as flawlessly fabulous as the superhuman, Instagram-posting model Goddess that is Spencer’s wife Vogue Williams, an aul declaration of appreciation emblazoned on a light aircraft sky-writing message would suffice and earn all you daddies a few brownie points in 2019! I wish the Williams-Matthews’, and all new parents, a glorious new year.

From obscurity to household names…let’s get ready to rumba!

Pictured is Barry Mullen who graduated as a Garda from Templemore Training College recently. Barry is the son of Peter and Maeve Mullen, Athlone Road, Roscommon.

I don’t know about you, but I haven’t quite reached my quota of formulaic-celebritybased-reality-shows just yet, (must be my age), so I’ll likely tune into this season’s Dancing with the Staff, sorry Stars. However, I’m disappointed with what the meeja is calling ‘the full celebrity line-up,’ because, well, I don’t wish to be impolite, but I’d hardly label any of them as ‘stars’. I mean, who cares how former Today FM radio DJ, sorry broadcaster, Mairead Ronan fares with the foxtrot? Not me! And, while you’re probably booing and hissing at me panto-style, as a licence payer, I want to ask if the show’s guest bookers/producers have all sunk to a previously unexplored

‘scraping-the-bottom-of-the-barrel’ level, and, instead of securing the likes of such gems as Anne Doyle or Bryan Dobson, or to even look past the RTE canteen and see if my former TV3 colleague Mark Cagney is up for the challenge, they seem to be excelling in promoting the mundane! Mind you, I congratulate them on their remarkable ability to advertise Clelia Murphy, Peter Stringer, Darren Kennedy, Johnny Ward, Fred Cooke, Demi Isaac Oviawe, Eilish O’Carroll, Denis Bastick, Cliona Hagan and Holly Carpenter as household names; (that’s a marketing merit that can never be undersold). Let’s hope these, er, top-dog supremoes can keep us dazzled,

(cue healthy dose of scepticism), with their fancy footwork. It’s safe to say readers, despite the fact I’ll likely tune into this year’s series, my expectations for the entertainment value of the entire offering is probably now as low as the status of the ‘celebrities’ taking part in it.

Happy New Year… Happy New Year to you all. I’ve no doubt 2019 will not only bring you thousands of reasons to pick up the Roscommon People, but also good health and lots of happiness.

WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION An ‘epiphany’ is an appearance. In today’s readings, with their rising stars, splendorous lights, and mysteries revealed, the face of the child born on Christmas day appears. Herod, in today’s Gospel, asks the chief priests and scribes where the Messiah is to be born. The answer Matthew puts on their lips says much more, combining two strands of Old Testament promise – one revealing the Messiah to be from the line of David (see 2 Samuel 2:5), the other predicting “a ruler of Israel” who will “shepherd his flock” and whose “greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth” (see Micah 5:1–3). Those promises of Israel’s king ruling the nations resound also in today’s Psalm. The psalm celebrates David’s son, Solomon. His kingdom, we sing, will stretch “to the ends of the earth,” and the world’s kings will pay Him homage. That’s the scene too in today’s First Reading, as nations stream from the East, bearing “gold and frankincense” for Israel’s king. The Magi’s pilgrimage in today’s Gospel marks the fulfillment of God’s promises. The Magi, probably Persian astrologers, are following the star that Balaam predicted would rise along with the ruler’s staff over the house of Jacob (see Numbers 24:17). Laden with gold and spices, their journey evokes those made to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba and the “kings of the earth” (see 1 Kings 10:2, 25; 2 Chronicles 9:24). Interestingly, the only other places where frankincense and myrrh are mentioned together are in songs about Solomon (see Song of Songs 3:6; 4:6, 14). One greater than Solomon is here (see Luke 11:31). He has come to reveal that all peoples are “coheirs” of the royal family of Israel, as today’s Epistle teaches. His manifestation forces us to choose: will we follow the signs that lead to Him as the wise Magi did? Or will we be like those priests and scribes who let God’s words of promise become dead letters on an ancient page?

It’s a cold, miserable, damp Wednesday, 2nd of January, very different from the amazingly mild weather we have had over the Christmas, and as I am sitting at the kitchen table writing this piece, it’s hard to believe that after the great anticipation and excitement of putting up the tree, and of Santa’s visit and the opening of all the presents, it’s as good as over. In a few days’ time everything will be packed away, and life as we know it will return to normal. I have to say that the festive season was really enjoyable, but, as with most families, we had our own stresses to put up with – and for some unknown reason, this year was one of those years. The television dish went blank for a week, the dishwasher stopped washing, the washing machine almost blew up (and was declared terminally ill), and the chimney went on fire, all in the few days before the Christmas. However, thanks to the great efforts of various people, including Hughie the TV man, and Kevin the Dishwasher man, we got all sorted and were able

to watch all the rubbish on telly over the holidays, and to wash the dishes after the turkey and ham had been demolished. The washing machine had to be replaced, and in fairness to one of our local electrical retailers and his staff, the new machine arrived on the Saturday before Christmas, and as I write this piece I can hear it working away out in the back kitchen. Of all the things we would have missed, apart from all the food and drink, the washing machine would have been the most lamented, so huge thanks to Tommie Kelly and his lads for coming up trumps at their busiest time of the year. That brings me to the chimney fire on the Friday evening before Christmas. I was working in Athlone when Carol rang to say the Dishwasher man, Kevin, who had arrived to fix it, told her the chimney was on fire, and that huge volumes of sparks were flying up into the atmosphere. Being made of solid stuff, I advised her to let it burn itself out, and added that it would be

nice and clean for Santa’s visit. She agreed to go down that route, until a few minutes later she heard an outrageous bang in the chimney, and herself and Kevin agreed that it was time to call the Fire Brigade. Barely more than 20 minutes after she made the call, the Brigade was on the job, and I cannot praise or thank them enough for the great work that they did. They were so professional in every aspect, including leaving the room spotless, and before they left they checked to see that everything was in order and that the danger was totally averted. Santa had no problem making his way down the chimney on Christmas Eve, so heartfelt thanks to Pat Hoey, Gary Smyth and the other six lads – one of whom was in the bath when he got the summons – who looked after us so well. I hope he managed to get back to it (the bath) over the rest of the Holy Season. Meanwhile, with all the material stuff that comes with it, it can be easy to forget that for people of a certain religion, the festive season is also about

Ole Gunner Solskjaer

For those of us who are Manchester United fans, the New Year has arrived with a little bit of hope, thanks to the attacking football that Ole Gunner Solskjaer has got them playing since he took over from the Special One, Jose Mourinho. And while this year is over and done with, in my opinion there is now some hope for a more exciting, and possibly even successful, future. For some reason I am not the normal United fan who automatically hates Liverpool, nearly like the unionists and nationalists in the North used to hate each other, and so I am happy enough to see the Merseysiders walking away with this year’s title. If they even draw tonight at Man. City, I think the race is as good as over. As for us (Manchester United), a top four place is highly unlikely, but hopefully we will continue to play attacking football in the old United tradition.

the birth of Baby Jesus, and, while I am the first to admit that I am not as committed to my faith as maybe I should be, at the same time, on Christmas Day I made sure to attend Mass in Donamon Castle. It was just a beautiful experience. The musical journey that Annette Griffin, her mother Frances, and John Staunton took us all on was quite special, and there was a lovely feelgood atmosphere amongst the huge attendance. It truly was an uplifting hour or so.

Big night at The Green Out here in Creggs, the rugby season is now fully on the boil, and the next four or five weeks are critical in terms of possible league or cup success. On this Saturday night, on the wonderful new 4G pitch, we play Castlebar, who will be gunning for revenge after we recently beat them in the Cawley Cup final. It’s a mustwin encounter, so try to get to The Green, see the excellent facilities up front for yourself, and help our lads get the win they so badly need.

Happy New Year It has now become a family tradition that we go out for dinner on New Year’s Eve. Afterwards, I discovered the delights of Heineken Zero, a non-alcoholic lager which tastes very like the real stuff. That left me free to drive back from the Abbey Hotel to Mikeen’s, where I could park the old jalopy, have a pint or two of the black stuff, listen to the musical entertainment (provided by Paul Browne), see out the old, see in the new, and get chauffuered home at the start of yet another New Year. At this stage of my life it’s an achievement to be still here, so I’m happy enough with that, and – not forgetting the many great people who passed on in 2018 – all I can do is wish you all a happy New Year, and may you still be here this time next year.

Till next week, Bye for now!

P lanning your Wedding Day

How to say yes to the dress!  MIRIAM KERINS

Okay, so you’ve said ‘yes’ to his/her proposal, everyone celebrated and your parents breathed a massive sigh of relief; well, how long did you think you could get away with living in their attic eating them out of house and home while playing video games all day…bless them; they’ve got the patience of Saint Coman. And, now that the Christmas and New Year’s festivities are over, it’s time

for all you spring brides to throw those elasticated trackie bottoms in the bin, hit the shops and begin one of the most important processes in your entire adult life, i.e. the quest for the perfect wedding dress. However, if you’re unsure where to start, don’t worry; because, in order to help you find your wedding dress soulmate, Roscommon’s favourite, family-focused and fashion-friendly publication has put together a checklist especially for you! So,

grab a coffee, read on and be inspired. If you’re having an ‘off’ day, (and we all have those), we’d suggest you might like to postpone the gorgeous gúna shopping ‘till you’re back to your old self. You see, buying your dream dress is pretty emotional and you’ll need to be feeling your best in order to help you picture the way you’ll look and how your dress will make you zing and bounce with joy on your big day. Before you even step inside a bridal gown store, in order not to have your gúna clashing with the overall theme and tone of your event, it’s important you’re in the right frame of mind. For example, are you having a vintage style event? If so, you’ll probably want to embrace the more classic creations as opposed to the new fashion forward trends. Are you having a daytime ceremony with a bo-ho girly garden vibe or is it a nighttime ball gown and black-

tie event? Either way, do keep your personal style and your event’s backdrop in mind at all times. We all have body parts we’re not, let’s say, head over heels in love with. And, whether that’s our jiggly under arms, our saggy boobs or our bootylicious derriere, we’d suggest that instead of obsessing over them, (besides, we’d bet you’re absolutely perfect and are probably being over critical of yourself), simply focus on those features you do love, and choose a gown that not only accentuates them, but will also make you look and feel so fabulous – it’ll de-emphasise any ‘body’ insecurities you may experience on your big day. Chat with your hair stylist/beauty therapist/friends/ d’mammy, etc., and get some advice regarding your particular colouring. Remember, while the style and shape of the dress will enhance your silhouette beautifully, the hue of the fabric will accentuate and

pay tribute to your skin tone. Remember, no bride wants to look washed out in her wedding photos. Our tip: Try on several shades and have someone take a picture of you wearing them while standing in natural light, i.e. shop window, and then inside the showroom under their house lighting, because lighting will always alter how the gown looks against your skin tone. Remember brides, at the end of the day, it’s your dress; your choice, and, while your entourage/creative crew are sipping champagne in the store, giggling and telling you puffy sleeves are soooo over and capes are in, (which they are), you go with your gut girl. Yes, your mammy and your bridesmaids all have great taste, but this is your day, and, while you will of course value their opinions, listen to your own inner voice, stay true to your personal style and event theme, and say yes to the dress you desire.

Wedding Fair at Abbey Hotel on Sunday, January 13th The stunning newly-refurbished interiors at Grealy’s family-run 18th century property, the four-star Abbey Hotel in Roscommon town, makes the perfect fairytale setting for your dream wedding day. When we look at 2018 it was a year of contrasts in the agricultural sector – and that’s just the weather! From the extremes of Storm Ophelia and fodder shortages of the spring, we slipped in to the month of May fearing a poor summer would put farmers on their knees. What a welcome surprise we got initially, with pleasant weather and a general uplift in the mood of the farming sector. Soon however, the drought

took hold, soil moisture deficits become the buzz words and grass shortages were widespread. Thankfully, we got some bounce back in the autumn with better than normal grass growth in September and October and an extended grazing season. This has shortened somewhat the winter housing period and fears of potential fodder shortages are not as severe as originally forecast. Planning for feeding and management of your ewe flock pre-lambing remains a top priority and on Wednesday, January 9th a KT Sheep National Event is planned in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon for 7.30 pm. Mike Shields, Nutritionist with RED Mills Ltd. will speak on the importance of a balanced ration in the pregnant ewe’s diet and the key ingredients that should

be included. Following on from this, Damien Costello, Sheep Specialist with Teagasc, will focus on growing spring grass for the lactating ewe and ensuring the ewe is getting her daily requirements to maintain milk flow to her lambs. Frank Hynes, Career and Job Consultant, will also be speaking on finding meaningful work both on and off the farm. Finally, Kepak Group will make a presentation on market outlook for 2019 and a live demo showing where in the world the various lamb cuts are sent. It’s surprising that the constituent parts of any lamb can end up in 20 different countries worldwide. support so far,” she said. There has been a very enthusiastic response from local parents and Erinn believes it’s due to the number of activities the Scouts can offer both boys and girls in the area. “I’ve been a Scout since I was six and I highly recommend it. There’s so much we do including hiking and camping and learning skills that young people may not otherwise learn. You also get to make friends all over the country and all over the world,” she added. Those interested in joining the Castlerea Scouts can contact Erinn and the other leaders by emailing castlereascouts@gmail.com to find out more.

The 3rd Roscommon Castlerea Scout Troop will commence activities on the 5th of February this year. It will be the first time a troop has been in operation in the area since the late 1980s. Group Leader Erinn Meehan is originally from Dublin but moved to the area two years ago. She has been involved with the Scouts since the age of six and felt Castlerea and surrounding areas in west Roscommon would benefit by having its own troop. “When I moved here I asked around about the Scouts and was told that the closest units were in Boyle and Lecarrow. Luckily we had enough people interested in becoming leaders in this area, and we’ve had great

Mount Talbot N.S. were very fortunate to be chosen by the Galway Business Association as one of the seven schools (the only school outside Co. Galway) to participate in their Christmas Display in Eyre Square. Seven reindeer were dispatched to seven schools to be decorated and returned to Eyre Square to take pride of place in Galway city’s Christmas market. A life-size reindeer arrived in Mount Talbot and many hours of work and entertainment went into giving the deer a newly-decorated and painted coat. It was with heavy hearts

that Mount Talbot children waved goodbye to the newly-christened Frederick as he departed for the greener pastures of the Christmas market adjacent to the main Eyre Square Shopping Centre entrance. The icing on the cake was the announcement that the school won 1st prize for their work on Reindeer ‘Fredrick’. A sincere word of thanks to Avril Smith who presented the children with their prizes. Well done everyone! Staff and pupils of Mount Talbot National School pictured with ‘Frederick The Reindeer’

SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER

@dan_dooner

Looking back on the year that was 2019 THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner It’s December 2019 and I’m sitting in the baking sunshine just outside my new home in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, where news of Liverpool’s recent double of Premier League and Champions League still hasn’t reached the general population. Time to take a look back on the other sporting events of 2019 with tongue firmly planted in cheek… Jurgen Klopp’s reign as Manchester United manager will be extremely short-lived.

In Gaelic football, Dublin completed their ‘drive for five’ with a narrow win over a David Clifford-inspired Kerry at Croke Park. Jim Gavin circumvented

the ‘three hand pass’ rule by encouraging his half-forwards to keep the ball on the ground following long kick-outs to Brian Fenton, who won 100% of his aerial duels this summer. Elsewhere, Roscommon raised a number of eyebrows by maintaining their Division One status and once again reaching the Super 8s. A number of young starlets also came to prominence and 2020 looks extremely promising for Anthony Cunningham’s youthful team. In hurling, a super-fit Wexford side shocked everyone following a winter of ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’ style training sessions. They repelled down from the top of the Hogan Stand to collect the Liam MacCarthy Cup. In boxing, Katie Taylor ran out of willing opponents halfway through the year so made the

Ireland’s top 10 players, including Galway powerhouse Martin Mulkerrins, Clare’s master of court craft Diarmuid Nash, and former champion Westmeath’s Robbie McCarthy. switch to UFC where she is currently undefeated. In soccer, Liverpool won a league and champions league double before Jurgen Klopp left for Manchester United, whom he described as “a much bigger club”. He was subsequently sacked two weeks into his contract after it emerged his role as Opel brand ambassador conflicted with United’s deals with Chevrolet and a Korean tractor firm. Klopp had finalised the signing of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk before leaving his post. Finally to rugby where Ireland claimed yet another Grand Slam which included a 60-point mauling of England. Joe Schmidt’s side later went on to claim the World Cup in Japan following a last-gasp drop goal from Joey Carbury in the final.

mon town. Celebrating a decade of bringing top-class handball to the west of Ireland, the 2019 Gaffney Memorial promises to be very special. A social event will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the tournament in Spells Bar, Ballaghaderreen, on the evening of Saturday, January 12th. Play begins at 3 pm on Friday, January 11th in Ballaghaderreen Handball Club, with the final scheduled to begin at 6 pm on Sunday, January 13th. For ticket and other enquiries, please contact Padraig Gaffney on 086-8599533. Ballaghaderreen handball club would like to thank the tournament sponsors, Drury Oils Ltd. (main sponsor), Regan & Sons, Spells Bar, Durkin’s Hotel, Jennings Pump Services, Cunniffe’s Butchers and all other supporters.

Snooker

Stars come out! On Friday, January 25th snooker stars Ken Doherty and Dennis Taylor will be joined by the legendary John Virgo for a special exhibition night at the Longford Arms Hotel. 1997 World Champion Ken Doherty added another title this year when he won the World Seniors Championship and in doing so, became the only player in the world to have won the World amateur, professional and now senior championships. Joining Doherty on the night will be the very popular former world champion Dennis Taylor who lifted the title way back in 1985 with that famous black ball decider against Steve Davis. A final which was watched by over 18 million viewers. Former UK champion and current BBC Snooker Pundit John Virgo will join the legends show-

casing some of his hilariously funny trickshot and routines along with running commentary throughout a night full of jokes, stories and even some snooker! It won’t be the first time these legends have visited the town, they last played here in 2016 to a sold out audience and now there finally back by popular demand. Stephen Hickey, the promoter behind the event would like to thank the Longford Arms Hotel for their help in organising this event, making it possible to bring these Snooker stars to the town. Tickets for the event are available from hotel reception or online via ticketstop.ie. Standard tickets are €25 while VIP tickets are €40. VIP tickets include meet and greet at the players’ reception along with VIP reserved seating at the event. Tickets as expected are selling fast so anyone wishing to attend is advised to purchase early to avoid disappointment. VIP tickets are strictly limited.

Buccaneers host the Connacht Senior Cup final for the first time at Dubarry Park this Saturday, January 5th. Galway Corinthians will be opponents for this early New Year showdown which kicks off at 2 pm. Buccs last won the cup two seasons ago when they overcame Corinthians on a foggy night at Corinthian Park. Hence the midlanders have home advantage on this occasion for a repeat of that decider, which was a tight enough encounter with the Pirates prevailing 17-10. With silverware on offer, the exchanges are likely to be again contested with fervour and vigour in this first game of 2019.

Exiles beaten by President’s select The Buccaneers President’s XV retained the James Moran Exiles Perpetual Cup with consummate ease when they overwhelmed the Exiles Selection 53-10 at Dubarry Park on St. Stephen’s Day. Backboned by a quintet of Byrnes, the holders were on top from start to finish in this traditional festive fixture which was played in unseasonably mild weather.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone at People Sport are with Trevor’s family and friends at this very difficult time. May he rest in peace.

THE GAIN LINE

Creggs entertain Castlebar this Saturday! Senior Rugby After a very successful first half of the season, Creggs’ first team resume Connacht League action against Castlebar in Creggs this Saturday night at 7.30 pm. Having defeated Castlebar in their inaugural Cawley Cup Final win before the Christmas break, the Mayomen will be out for revenge, under the lights on the new all-weather pitch. The Creggs development team are away to Corinthians in the Connacht J1C League at 2.30 pm this Sunday.

Youth Rugby Connacht U-16A League: Creggs 50 Sligo 5. Creggs U-16s took on Monivea on December 20th in a historic match which saw the first ever game played on an approved artificial surface in Connacht. Creggs’ performance lived up to the excitement as they put Monivea on the back foot from the off. Creggs’ Shane Connaughton was first to touch down on the new surface as he converted the momentum that his side had built up in the opening period. More tries followed from the likes of Mark Kilcommons, Edimar Filho, Dara Hughes, Tyrese Etete and more. Darren Gately added the extra points from the tee as Creggs continued to a well-earned victory. A great performance from the home team that fittingly honoured the development of the new 4G pitch. The U-16s travel to play Corinthians on Saturday in Galway, where a win would put them in the running for the fourth Connacht 1A League semi-final slot. Tuam and Sligo the other teams in contention.

Connacht U-15A League: Creggs 34 Sligo 31. Creggs qualified for the Connacht U15A League semi-finals with a hard-fought victory over Sligo on the new 4G pitch just before Christmas. This recently opened surface certainly allowed for a fast game with both teams running in five tries each on the day. Creggs began the game very well with a try from Noah Fallon converted by DJ Hession but it was Sligo who were in the ascendancy for a large period in the first half and after two tries of their own they led 14-7 before Oisin O’Beirne scored a penalty to reduce the deficit to 14-10 after 18 minutes of the opening half. Sligo scored another try before Creggs responded through another Noah Fallon try, converted by DJ Hession to leave the half-time score, Sligo 19 Creggs 17. Creggs were the better team in the second half with Lee Kilcoyne, Michael McAteer and Ciaran Purcell pominent up front and Cormac Dolan controlling things well at 9. The home team scored tries from Josh Verling, Edimar Fimho and Noah Fallon after good work from Jack Fleming and Senan Lambe and were leading 34-26 into the final play when Sligo got in for a try to reduce the deficit to 3431 in Creggs’ favour. Creggs will play Oughterard in the U-14A Connacht League next Saturday in Creggs at 12 pm.

Mini Rugby Creggs Minis will return after the Christmas break with all ages playing in a blitz in Creggs next Saturday morning from 10.30 am to 11.45 am.

Strokestown United v Castlerea Celtic Celtic face a difficult trip to Strokestown this Saturday as they attempt to keep pace at the top. The hosts will be hoping to continue the form they showed before Christmas. Prediction: Castlerea Celtic

Raftery’s Oakland Hotel Premier Division Ballymoe FC v Kilkerrin United. 11 am Ballymoe are well placed at the start of the year. Prediction: Ballymoe FC Dysart FC v Ballinasloe Town. 11 am Both sides will be desperate for the three points. Prediction: Ballinasloe Town Skyvalley Rovers v Shiven Rovers. 2 pm Shiven should edge this. Prediction: Shiven Rovers

Table Quiz in aid of Hugh’s House Cam Celtic will play host to a fundraising table quiz in aid of the charity ‘Hugh’s House’ this Saturday from 9 pm in McDermott’s in Curraghboy. Hugh’s House is self-funding accommodation for relatives of sick children attending Temple Street, Holles Street, Coombe and Rotunda Hospitals in Dublin. There will be music and awards on the night as well as spot prizes. A table of 4 costs €40 and are all welcome to attend.

Horses for Courses by Tom Red There is flat action under lights on the all-weather track at Dundalk tomorrow evening from 5.30 pm. On Saturday Cork hostd four hurdles, two chases and a bumper starting at 12.20 pm. Sunday sees racing at Naas including the Grade 1 Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle away at 12.50 pm. Across the small pond there were no Irish raiders in the Kempton’s King George on Stephen’s Day and Paul Nicholls won his tenth running of the race with Clan Des Obeaux ridden by Harry Cobden at 12/1. On the 27th there were three Irish raiders at Chepstow for the Grade 3 Welsh Grand National which was won by Elegant Escape, the best of the Irish was Gavin Cromwell’s Raz de Maree, last year’s winner, who finished 5th. In the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton Altior was unbackable at 1/8 and lived up to the odds beating Diego du Charmil by 19l with Henry de Bromhead’s Special Tiara third another 5l away and earning his ticket with £10,700 in prize money. Colin Tizzard’s Lostintranslation won the Grade 2 Dippers Novice Chase at Cheltenham at 3/1 in a four horse race. Passed by Barry Geraghty and Defi Du Seuil over the penultimate fence Robbie Power stayed in 2nd over the last until they met the hill and then powered up the hill very impressively. We have mentioned this horse as one to watch and he in now only 6/1 for the JLT at the Festival in March. He could turn out in Leopardstown next month.

Festival Reports The blue and gold colours of Sean and his wife Bernardine Mulryan were carried to victory twice on St. Stephen’s Day at Leopardstown as City Island trained by Martin Brassil and ridden by Mark Walsh won the 2m maiden hurdle and Exit Poll trained by Jessica Harrington battled all the way to the line to win the bumper under Finny Maguire. City Island was one of several winners disqualified during 2018 for a prohibited substance found in his post-race sample after winning at the Galway Festival. Sean, who hails from Peak, Ballymacurley, and is a major sponsor of sporting events in Roscommon especially the county’s senior football team. The featured Racing Post Grade 2 Novice Chase went to JP McManus’s Le Richebourg under Mark Walsh winning for Joseph O’Brien. In Limerick’s first Grade 1 race, Keith Donohue got his first Grade 1 win as Hardline made the best of Getabird and Ruby Walsh’s mistake at the last to win by ½l. In the Down Royal bumper Valdieu, runner-up in his last three runs including the Leopardstown bumper winner City Island and Malone Road, won under Mark O’Hare On the 27th in the Grade 1 Sugar Paddy Chase English raider Simply Ned, last year’s victor, again showed his liking for the Foxrock track beating WP Mullins’ Footpad with a scintillating finish by ½l with Ordinary World 4¾l back in 3rd. Mark Walsh was completing a first three races hat trick on the raider and Ruby Walsh was on the runner-up. In the other Grade 1 on the card, the Future Champions Novice Hurdle, Mullins and Walsh got some compensation when Aramon beat Sancta Simona and Tintangle 10l and 3l. The favourite Triplicate finished 4th. Walsh had earlier won on Sir Erec and Paloma Blue. On Friday there were two Grade 1 races in Leopardstown when Elliott’s Apple’s Jade easily won the Christmas Hurdle by 28l from Early Doors and WP Mullins’ Kemboy won the Savill’s Chase. What odds Apple’s Jade goes for the Champion Hurdle and Kemboy now has the Gold Cup in his plans. There were 2 more Grade 1s on Saturday when Davy Russell rode Elliott’s Delta Work to victory in the Neville’s Hotel Novice Chase and Mullins won the Ryanair Hurdle with Sharjah ridden by son Patrick.

City Island (Mark Walsh) lead over the last.

On New Year’s Day in Fairyhouse we saw Joseph O’Brien’s Castle Oliver, a nice bumper horse, improve on his debut 3rd in Punchestown to win with a late run. The one that caught the eye in the race was the 2nd Chef Afef who got to within a neck of the winner with Battle of Midway a short head away in 3rd. This bumper will produce winners. In Tramore the Listed Savills Chase provided WP Mullins with a 1, 2, 3 as Ryanair Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo beat Total Recall and Invitation Only by 6l and 16l. The winner has put himself in Mullins’ Gold Cup picture. Philip Fenton landed his first winner since his return to training when Secret Cargo won the handicap hurdle. Leading jockey contenders Rachel Blackmore and Davy Russell both rode a brace of winners at Tramore as did Paul Townend and Jack Kennedy at Fairyhouse.

General News Jamie Codd suffered a partially collapsed lung in a fall at Limerick on Friday and is expected to be out of action for a month. The leading amateur rider was riding Triumph Hurdle winner Farclas for Gordon Elliott when taking a particularly bad fall at the third flight in the Irish Independent Hurdle. Also, out for a month is Keith Dohohue, who fell from Burren Life in the Tim Duggan Memorial Chase suffering serious facial injuries. The John Kiely-trained Carlingford Lough, winner of five Grade 1 races including Hennessy Leopardstown and Punchestown Gold Cups as well as a Galway Plate, was pulled up in the Paddy Power Chase on Thursday which was won by his owner J P McManus with Auvergnat. He died later having suffered a heart attack. On Friday Disko suffered a fatal fall in the Grade 1 Savill’s Chase.

Point to Point Corner There is no racing on the northern circuit this weekend and there are two meetings down for decision on Sunday, at Templenacarriga near Lisgoold in Cork with 70 runners and at Mainstown near Carrick-on-Suir with 107 entries. Both meetings start at 12.30 pm. First rider to record 100 winners in a season on Greenandredparson at Necarne in Fermanagh, to record 1,000 all-time winners on a horse called Death Duty at Cragmore in Limerick, Galway native Derek O’Connor breached yet another milestone in the 19th season of his record-breaking career reaching the 1,200 winner mark at Dromahane on Sunday aboard Robert Tyner’s Nelly’s Money.

@SeamusDuke

Seamus Duke ON SPORT

Duke’s New Year predictions A new year and a new dawn which means it’s prediction time again! Each year I can only hope that people forget the predictions I make about sport but every year I am reminded just how wrong I have been! It is a bit of fun though and I have to say that I am really looking forward to the new year in so many sports. So here goes…

Gaelic football Unless there is a dramatic collapse, Dublin should become the first team to win five in a row All-Ireland senior football titles. I can’t see anyone there to beat them. Kerry will be back in time, but Tyrone, Donegal, Mayo or Galway don’t look well enough equipped to dethrone them. I hope it’s a better championship than the one we saw in 2018. If there is no improvement in the quality of the football then the inter-county game will be in serious trouble. Here in Roscommon it would be a huge achievement if our senior footballers survive in Division One, and with a really tough draw in Connacht it could be a tough year ahead for Anthony Cunningham and his players. Hopefully there will be a few good wins along the way. Expectations will be low and the fans will have to have patience. On the club scene, Clann na nGael will be the team to beat once again, but if they have all their players available, it might be Roscommon Gaels’ year. They have been the bridesmaids on several occasions in recent years and after 15 years without a title it could be their turn in 2019. In ladies’ football there is no reason why Roscommon cannot repeat their 2018 success in Connacht. It is very positive that Michael Finneran is still there as manager. An All-Ireland final appearance is very possible for this talented bunch of players. On the national scene, Dublin look set for three in a row of senior titles.

Hurling and Camogie The biggest problem that hurling has is that the championship of 2019 could never be as good as 2018 – or could it? There are at least six teams that can win the MacCarthy Cup in 2019. I have a fancy for Cork this time. They were really unlucky in 2018 and they have a marvellous squad of players. Limerick will have something to say about that and with Liam Sheedy back at the helm, Tipp will surely be a factor and

you can never write off Galway. But it’s Cork for me in 2019. It’s a positive step that Ciaran Comerford is back again as Roscommon senior manager. Hopefully they can make progress in league and championship. On the club scene, Four Roads will always be there but Athleague for backto-back titles in 2019. If their players retain their enthusiasm they can do it under Seamus Qualter. On the camogie scene the performance of Four Roads in the recent junior club All-Ireland final will give the game in the county great hope. Hopefully there will be a major title coming back to the county this year.

Soccer On the international scene, the Mick McCarthy reign part two will begin and there is sure to be a bounce in results as a consequence but I’m not so sure if it will be the solution to our problems. The facts are that the quality of player is simply not there any more. Qualification for the Euros in 2020 would be a great achievement. Our chances are 50/50. It looks like Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title will come to an end in May. I know I predicted earlier in the season that City would win it easily. Regardless of the result of the game tonight between City and The ‘Pool, there is a swagger and purpose to Liverpool’s play this year that we haven’t seen before. If Van Dijk and Salah stay fit it’s their title this time around. United fans will have to emigrate in May as it looks like Leeds United will be back in the Premier League too! Here at home it will be interesting to see how Dundalk react to the loss of Stephen Kenny as manager. I met Johnny Caulfield at the weekend and he told me he is working hard recruiting players in the close season for Cork City. It looks like the title will be between those two again.

Rugby It’s a terrible pity that the World Cup was not in September and October of 2018 because Ireland looked at their peak at that stage. The big question is can they keep their flying form up in 2019? A lot can happen in the space of 12 months. Key players can get injured or lose their form. All we can do is hope. We have Joe Schmidt as manager and

Can anybody stop Dublin’s ‘drive for five’ this year?

that’s a plus in anyone’s book. It’s vital we play well in the Six Nations, and when we get to Japan it is very important that we win the group we are in. If we do then we can get to a semi-final and anything is possible after that. Leinster are looking good again in Europe, however their lack of discipline last weekend against Munster will be a worry for Leo Cullen going forward. Connacht have a great chance in the Challenge Cup and Pro14. There could be silverware coming the The Sportsground this year. Speaking of silverware, Creggs are looking good too and they have a superb team at the moment. They are going well in the league and a title would crown a great season.

Golf Despite the thrilling win for Tiger Woods in the Tour Championship at East Lake, 2018 was the year of Brooks Koepka who won two majors and was in contention in another. The big question is whether Tiger can win another major this year. On the evidence of his improving form in 2018 the answer has to be yes. He was in contention in three majors in 2018 and another small improvement will see him get over the line this year.

Katie Taylor continues to dazzle in the ring and 2019 promises to be another busy year for the Irish boxer.

It’s a huge year for Rory McIlroy. He has undoubted talent but he needs to win a major soon or he will slip down the rankings. Hopefully Shane Lowry can be more consistent in 2019. He has the game to be at the very top.

Boxing Hopefully 2019 will be the year of Katie Taylor and Michael Conlon. Katie Taylor produced her best performance as a professional in her latest title defence before Christmas and hopefully she can win more titles in 2019. Michael Conlon is also making the progress that many predicted he would make in the paid ranks. Hopefully he will get a shot at a world title in 2019.

Other sports In horse racing Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott look like they will dominate Cheltenham once again although it would be nice to see an Irish winner of one of the big races which did not happen in 2018. Aidan O’Brien is sure to be back on top on the flat again too. Here in the county, we are looking forward to another great year at Roscommon races and the opening of the new facilities which are under construction at Lenebane at the moment. The World Swimming Championships

would never have been of much interest here over the years but now there are several top class swimmers in Ireland and the possibility of medals at the championships are now high. In hockey, hopefully the Irish women’s team can build on their remarkable success in 2018. In cricket (yes cricket!), Ireland are now a full member at the very top level of the game and this summer they play England in a full test match for the very first time. Finally in Athletics, the World Championships will be in September in Doha and potential medallists like Thomas Barr will be hoping to do well in those championships.

Birthday wishes to a hurling legend! Athleague and Roscommon hurling legend Johnny Haughey celebrated his 90th birthday last weekend. He now lives with his brother in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo and a ‘small celebration’ was held to mark the special birthday. Johnny was thrilled when his beloved Athleague Club won the county senior hurling title for the first time in 11 years last October.

Liverpool FC look set to end their 30-year wait for a league title as they remain firmly in the driving seat to win their first ever English Premier League trophy.

Clann na nGael had to withstand a second half St. Brigid’s revival before edging home in this very enjoyable U-20 Division One final played on Friday evening last. With Ciarán Lennon, Sea Henry and Dylan Sumner dominating, the home side cruised into a 0-10 to 0-2 lead at half-time but Brigid’s brought on Donnacha Gately, Brian Derwin and Robbie Dolan as subs, and in the second half their fortunes were transformed as they chipped away at the Clann lead coming up just short in the end. It was 0-5 to no score after only ten minutes with

Henry (2), Callum O’Brien, Paul McManus and Lennon on target. Eddie Nolan’s pointed free in the 12th minute was brief respite as Clann powered forward. Ciarán Lennon’s free taking was sublime, and by half-time Clann were eight points to the good with Brigid’s’ only other point a free pointed by Shane Cunnane. The opening ten minutes of the second half saw the exchanges evenly matched but there was far more urgency to Brigid’s play. By the 37th minute Clann led by 0-13 to 0-3, but after that Brigid’s assumed control. Ciaran Sugrue, Shane Cunnane (free) and Brian Derwin pointed without reply.

Henry lifted the siege with a fine point for Clann, but the goal that Brigid’s needed came in the 49th minute. Hesitancy in the Clann defence was punished by the quick-thinking Brigid’s attack before Tom O’Carroll finished well. Indeed Brigid’s kicked a couple of wides from scoreable positions just after the goal and those misses were to prove costly. Ciarán Lennon then pointed a whopper of a free from 45 metres in the 52nd minute but Brigid’s were not finished, and with three

minutes to go Donnacha Gately fired over another super point. Shane Cunnane was on target with a free in the 59th minute to reduce the margin to four with four minutes of injury-time left. In the 62nd minute Cunnane pointed another free and a minute later the gap was down to two when Cunnane was again on target. But Shane Curran’s men simply ran out of time and Clann had survived. For a Clann side (managed by Johnny Dunning) who were impressive for

three quarters of this final Sean Fallon, Oisin Lennon, Dylan Sumner, Paul McManus, Ciarán Lennon and Sea Henry were outstanding with Henry pipping Lennon for the ‘man of the match’ award after a super individual display. Brigid’s will be disappointed that they didn’t get their revival underway earlier in the game but this is a young side that will be back no doubt. Pearse Frost, Eddie Nolan, Ciaran Sugrue and subs Donnacha Gately and Brian Derwin were their best performers.
