JURY SERVICE I recently wondered who may sit on a jury for jury service. Are certain people excluded and not allowed serve? Can I refuse to attend if I am selected? Should I be refunded my travel expenses if I cannot refuse to attend? In Ireland, most serious criminal offences require a trial by a judge and jury. The jury will consist of 12 members of the public who are selected from a number of people who were called to do their jury service on that day. The jurors decide whether a person is guilty or not guilty of the offence for which he or she has been charged, based on the facts of the case. Jurors are contacted by summons stating that they are obliged to attend for jury service on a particular date. Every Irish citizen over 18 years of age who is on the Register of Dáil Electors is eligible for jury service. However, a number of exceptions apply and any person involved in any way with the administration of justice are excluded including judges, Gardai, prison officers, barristers, solicitors, court officers. You are disqualified from jury service if you have been convicted of a serious offence in Ireland; been imprisoned for five years or more or if you have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of three months or more within the past 10 years. You may also be excused from jury service for varying reasons, example: full-time students; those providing an important community service such as doctors, nurses. The members of the jury who have been selected will individually swear an oath or affirm that they will properly try the issue and give a true verdict according to the evidence. It is an offence to fail to attend for jury service without reasonable excuse. There is no payment for jury service. Travelling expenses are not allowed. This column is prepared by Dolores Gacquin, Solicitor. Byrne Carolan Cunningham have offices in Athlone, Moate, Lanesborough and Galway. A person should always contact their solicitor to obtain legal advice specific to their own situation. The above column contains general information and cannot be relied upon as legal advice.
e l p o e WATCHING P With PAUL HEALY
So, why the long face? Oh, what a weekend I’ve had! It all started when a few residents suggested that our estate should enter a float in the Roscommon Easter Parade. And…? Well, we organised a meeting, asked for suggestions. Someone said: ‘Let’s all go dressed as Easter bunnies’. But someone else said ‘I’m an animal lover, and that’s ridiculing animals’. Then? Then a nice old man rather unwisely asked would four of the English residents of our street like us to create a Brexit-themed float…they discussed it for ages but couldn’t agree on how to go about it. Then? Next a lady who is on the Lamb Festival committee said: ‘Let’s make some delicious lamb stew and hand portions out to people attending the parade…’ Brilliant! You’d think…but two very nice vegetarians from the house on the corner said they couldn’t really sign up to that. It was getting a little tense now. Then? Well, next Old Murphy said ‘I’ll go as Donald Trump and throw sweets at the kids’ – but someone else said ‘Go as Donald Trump? Their parents might throw stuff back at you’. Were there any more ideas?
Endangered Species The barstool boyos
Well a few of the young lads wanted to be topical. ‘Let’s go as Liverpool, marching on towards the title’…one of them said ‘I can stand on the back of the lorry and rise the crowd, I do a great Jurgen Klopp fist-pump’. Creative… Yeah, but a Manchester City supporter and a glum-faced Manchester United fan both shot that down.
What we liked… It was a glorious weekend with beautiful sunshine and high temperatures. Easter Parades in Roscommon and Strokestown attracted large crowds and local businesses received a timely boost.
What we didn’t like…

Then? Someone else said ‘Tiger Woods is back in the news, he’s been wearing the Mayo colours, we could do a comedy float about epic sporting comebacks…with Mayo winning Sam.’ Let me guess…that guy from Ballaghaderreen who lives across from you…he objected? Ruled it out completely! Was that it? Yep! In the end, we just decided to meet up socially and watch the parade instead. And that’s what you did? Eh…not quite. Old Murphy suggested we congregrate outside the bank, but someone said: ‘We’re not gathering there; I’m against the banks, I’m still not happy about the bail-outs’. Oh dear. ‘Fraid I walked out. My parting shot was ‘You lot couldn’t organise a p**s-up in a brewery’. Broke the tension? They laughed? No! I got an email from one of the residents later. She took me to task for using ‘language unbecoming’ and accused me of ‘veiled support for excessive drinking’. Oh dear. Anyways, why did residents consider entering the Easter Parade in the first place? Oh, I think the flyer said something about promoting co-operation and harmony, bringing people together…
The ‘Missed opportunity of the Week’ Award …to the Late Late Show team for not lining up Minister Michael Ring for the Mother of All Kerry/Mayo showdowns last Friday night. A fired-up Pat Spillane, deposed
‘Ambassador for rural Ireland’, appeared on the show and roasted Minister Ring and his Department. Ring hit back via the Sunday Independent. Spillane’s part-showbiz/ part-genuinely impassioned contribution went down a treat with the studio audience and viewers, but a head to head clash with Ring might just have been TV Gold.
We try to keep this column light-hearted more often than not… sometimes it’s just not realistic. Madness infiltrated the week, in many places. Two that stand out: the sick, evil, so-called suicide bombings in Sri Lanka, which claimed over 300 lives. Meanwhile, the sickening shooting dead in Derry of journalist Lyra McKee was a horrific reminder of the dark days of the past.
The ‘Small-minded, weak argument’ Award Paul Kimmage (Sunday Independent) is a gifted sportswriter, but sometimes he almost trips over his undoubtedly sizeable ego. Tiger Woods makes an amazing comeback, wins the Masters. Kimmage responds with a column titled ‘Woods is back but there’s no sign that he has changed’. Kimmage dredged up old stories about Woods’ alleged meanness, his approach to the press, the Woods’ family not erecting a headstone at Tiger’s father’s grave, etc. Memo to Paul: Woods doesn’t have to change; and he’s almost certainly the greatest golfer the world has ever seen! Is that not enough?

‘Action needed on jobs for Roscommon!’ Independent County Councillor and local election candidate Domnick Connolly has called on the Government to increase its efforts to create jobs in rural Ireland and in Co. Roscommon in particular. “The economy continues to improve and there are plenty of job announcements around the country on a regular basis but sadly none of those relate to County Roscommon. “I am calling on the Government, the IDA and Enterprise Ireland to increase their efforts to provide employment here in County Roscommon. Their efforts in recent years have been almost non-existent and it’s time that the issue was highlighted and I shall be doing so during the course of this election campaign,” he concluded.

People NEWS Rossie punter nets over €8,000! A BoyleSports online customer from Co. Roscommon was celebrating last Friday evening as their each-way treble and three cross doubles landed on three different horses in the UK to win €8,637.14 just ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. It was Heavenly Holly in the 2.30 at Lingfield that kicked things off to a nice start as she
won by one length for Hugo Palmer at a very attractive price of 9/1, a brilliant start. Petrus was the next winner in the 3.30 race at Bath who obliged at 5/1 for trainer Brian Meehan meaning there was just one more race left for the big bet to strike. It was a nail-biting wait to the 4.05 race at Bath to give the punter their third and final winner as
Queen Of Desire justified her favouritism to win by half a length at 11/4. Sarah Kinsella Spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “There were more celebrations this Easter but this time in Co. Roscommon as one lucky punter landed their ambitious bet to claim a fantastic amount of €8,637.14. We wish our customer happy spending”.

Councillors discuss Rosalie closure Motion calling for legal action withdrawn A motion proposing that Roscommon County Council seek an injunction in order to prevent the HSE closing the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea was temporarily withdrawn at a special meeting of the council yesterday (Wednesday). The proposal, one of six made at yesterday’s meeting, had been made by Cllr. Nigel Dineen. Cllr. Dineen later withdrew his proposal after Director of Services, Martin Lydon, informed members that Roscommon County Council could only participate in legal action in relation to functions performed by the council. Cllr. Dineen’s two other proposals called for Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin to
withdraw support from the government if the closure isn’t reversed and that all TDs and Senators stop support for the current confidence and supply agreement. The other three proposals at yesterday’s meeting were made by Cllr. Orla Leyden. Cllr. Leyden called for a full investigation of the county’s mental health services and she also called for all Oireachtas members to support Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy’s private members motion. Cllr. John Cummins later said that if the issue isn’t resolved after being raised at the Dáil, Fianna Fáil councillors could call on Micheál Martin to withdraw support from government.
‘HSE is running this country, not the government’ Strokestown, Co. Roscommon Dear Editor, This is a very sad time for the people of Castlerea and Roscommon with the news that the Rosalie Home in Castlerea is going to close. I am very sad for the vulnerable people in society who are being treated like this by the HSE. It was confirmed that two of the clients need inpatient care in a different setting, and the remainder only need nursing care. However, only last year at a public meeting, a top psychiatrist who knew the clients, stated that they had complex psychiatric needs, and now it is found they do not require continuing inpatient psychiatric care. Some of these clients do not have relatives to speak for them. Some of these clients are in their 80s and one client is 90. To my mind it is deplorable that these people should be treated in such a manner. I am convinced that the HSE are doing their best to close all the mental health services down in Roscommon.
This is just another facility that they will close. They have closed Athleague Hostel, High Support in Castlerea, Cloonbrackna Hostel in Roscommon, and Ballaghaderreen Day Centre, and there has also been a significant reduction in beds in the unit in Roscommon Hospital. Furthermore, the day care in Castlerea used to be open seven days a week a few years ago, but now it is only open five days a week. I don’t have a lot more to say as everyone has been shouting about this wonderful facility in the last few years. I only hope that none of the people instigating this closure have to witness their loved ones being removed from the home where dignity and respect has been shown to them, and more importantly where friends have been formed for many years. It seems to me that it is the HSE who are running this country, and not the Government. I only hope that there will be a reversal of this decision. Yours sincerely, Eileen Beirne
Kerrane: Share Anderson Report with families Sinn Féin spokesperson for Roscommon Claire Kerrane has said that the failure to share the report which is being used to remove residents from the Rosalie Home with their loved ones is disgraceful. “It is beyond comprehension that the report by Dr. Jim Anderson, a psychiatrist from the North of Ireland into the clinical assessments carried out on the then 12 residents of the Rosalie Home has been withheld from the residents and their loved ones. “The report which the HSE and the Government are using as the reason to close the Rosalie Home should be made available to every resident and their family and that should happen right now. “If the report concludes that the care of the residents would be better met elsewhere then why not provide the report to the families, unless there is something to hide. “It is beyond time that the HSE treated the residents of the Rosalie Home and their families with some ounce of respect. The withholding of this report is shameful and cannot be allowed to continue. “No family member would fight for their loved one to remain in the Rosalie Home if it was not the best place for them. That is the bottom line”.

Town Centre Enhancement Plan on display The Re-vitalization of Roscommon Town Centre Part 8 plans are now on public display in Aras an Chontae, Roscommon and the public are invited to make submissions. Cllr. Orla Leyden said the ambitious project would increase footfall in the county town. “This is an exciting plan for Roscommon town with initial funding of €750,000 awarded to the project. It will see the development of a pedestrianised area to the east of the Town Centre (to the
left of Market Square as you look up Main Street) and an increase in the number of one hour parking spaces to free up the free parking. “The idea is to rejuvenate the county town, enhance the streetscape and to improve the experience for locals and visitors alike. This is an ambitious project that will increase footfall and economic turnover in the town, making Roscommon a destination town in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands,” she said.

‘Dental waiting lists for children out of control!’ Sinn Féin spokesperson for Roscommon Claire Kerrane has said the waiting lists for HSE dental services for children are out of control in the county putting their oral health at risk. Speaking after waiting times were provided by the HSE to her colleague Louise O’Reilly TD, Kerrane said: “Children have a legal entitlement to three routine dental screenings; however, figures revealed by the HSE have shown that in practice children in County Roscommon are not being provided with the necessary screening and checks. “There are 566 children on waiting lists for dental services waiting over one year in County Roscommon. “This is completely unacceptable – the oral health of children in the county is being threatened because the government refuse to invest in the dental service here. “For years the public

nounced dead. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact Ballinasloe Garda Station on 090-9631890. Fianna FĂĄil TD Eugene Murphy has sought clarity from the government as the announcement for a 50-bed unit for older people in St. Patrick’s hospital, a 50-bed unit at Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon, and a 50-bed unit at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe stalls. Deputy Murphy raised concerns about the viability of these projects as the National Children’s Hospital overruns may restrict funding. “The promises made by the Minister in the most recent Parliamentary Questions ring rather hollow as all of these promises depend on inclusion in the HSE Capital Plan. As in the words of the Minister ‘that will propose the projects which can progress in 2019 having regard to available capital funding, the number of large national capital projects currently underway, the cash flow requirements attaching to each project and the rel-
evant priority’. So reading between the lines, I would still have concerns about a number of projects in my constituency. “Bed space and overall

capacity is reaching critical levels at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe and the new 50-bed unit at the hospital is shovel ready and just awaiting
the green light by Government. It looks unlikely this will happen anytime soon. “I have once again raised this matter in DĂĄil. These projects cannot be left on
the drawing board. Geography should not be a deciding factor in the level of healthcare available, concluded Deputy Murphy.

STRAIGHT TALKING Is it too late to save the Earth? WITH SEAMUS DUKE
Last Thursday night I watched the David Attenborough documentary ‘Climate Change – The Facts’ and then later on BBC Four a docu-report on BBC called ‘The Age Of Stupid’. They made for very sobering and at times very distressing and depressing viewing. The climate change argument is now long over. Those who deny it’s a fact are either deluded or have a vested interest and don’t want to acknowledge the facts. We are destroying our planet simple as that, and at a frightening rate too! Is it good enough that this destruction will probably not happen in our generation’s lifetime and does that mean we can ignore what’s happening? As far as I can see there is very little we can do to stop the inevitable happening. The level of emissions now escaping into the atmosphere means that unless we address it now it will be too late in 10 or 20 years’ time. Our children and especially our grandchildren will be living in a world that will be unsustainable on several levels. But people have to live, and the way our lives are structured means that we are all guilty. I am no different. I have to travel to work in Tullamore from Roscommon town four days a week. The only way I can get there is by car. There is no suitable public transport to get me there early in the morning. I recently changed my car and sought advice from several people on what to buy. When I told them that I was doing a lot of mileage every single one of them advised me to buy a diesel car. That’s also allowing for an inevitable sharp rise in diesel prices as carbon taxes kick in later in the year. There are hundreds of thousands of people like me here in Ireland never mind in other countries. Then we have our farming industry which is the backbone of rural Ireland. Climate change activists want people to cut down on red meat and dairy products. What would these people advise farmers to do if they are not working the land? Everyone has to work in order to feed their families. But the dilemma a lot of us face here in Ireland pales into insignificance with the situation in the three biggest economies in the

Local Elections 24th May 2019 I care passionately about Roscommon and I am ambitious for our County. world. The US economy is built on the use of oil and Donald Trump has pulled his country out of the Paris Accord on climate change. In India the levels of pollution there now are four times what they were ten years ago. In China they are building one new power plant every week to deal with growing energy needs. Just think about that for a minute. There are very laudable efforts being made here in Ireland with regard to recycling and the use of plastics, and plans to introduce carbon taxes to help with the situation but when the likes of the USA and China are ignoring this crisis the planet is doomed, and that’s not an exaggeration. If the BBC programmes last Thursday night were even 50% accurate then it is only a matter of decades before the situation spirals out of control. So what will stop this kamikaze race to the bottom? According to both documentaries the only thing that will work are massive
public protests all over the world. It is the only thing that that politicians take any notice of. Have I got any solutions? I don’t, is the simple answer. I’ll be dead and gone before the real trouble starts. When every country in the world is suffering from extensive flooding, when storms are killing hundreds of thousands of people every year and when society breaks down because wars are being fought over access to clean drinking water. That’s when climate change will affect everyone. This will be the first generation in the history of time that we will be handing over a world that is a much poorer and more damaged than the generation before. It’s hardly a great legacy to hand on to our children. At the end of the docu-report ‘The Age Of Stupid’ the narrator Pete Postlethwaite said: “With all our intelligence and sophistication, the incredible thing is that we are committing suicide and we are doing it knowingly too”.

Easter Commemorations in Tibohine and Castlerea
BBusinesses: Reach your target market! 18,000 COPIES PRINTED WEEKLY
The County Roscommon IRA Commemoration Committee held its annual ceremony at the grave of John McGowan in Tibohine Cemetery on Easter Sunday. Meanwhile, Roscommon Sinn Féin held their commemoration in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea on Easter Saturday. Those present at the Tibohine ceremony on Sunday marched from Tibohine NS led by the Raheen Pipe Band before Michael Hanilly recited a decade of the Rosary in Irish. A wreath-laying ceremony took place and the flags were dipped as a piper played a lament. The Roscommon Roll of Honour was called out by Frank Dowd and the 1916 Proclamation was read by Tom Flynn. A statement from the leadership of the Republican movement was read by Joe Murphy and Ballyfarnon native, Sean Scott, delivered an oration and in the course of his address he outlined the circumstances in which the two volunteers met their deaths. John McGowan was a native of Portahard, Frenchpark and he was captain of the local Tibohine Company, which was part of the East Mayo IRA Brigade. He was an active volunteer in his area and as a result was hunted by the local RIC. Due to this fact he couldn’t remain in his own home and had to go on the run. He stayed mostly in safe houses around the Frenchpark and Ballaghaderreen areas. A few nights before Christmas 1920 John was staying in the home of Pat Dwyer, Rathkeery, with Pat and his son Pat jnr. must have been betrayed to enemy forces by an informer as during the night of December 20th, the house was raided by Black and Tan forces. Young Pat Dwyer was seized and brought to the front door where a light was shone in his face for an unknown person hidden outside to identify him. A voice outside confirmed Pat Dwyer’s identity and Pat was knocked unconscious from a blow of a rifle. John McGowan was then brought to the door for the same purpose and was identified by the person outside. It was a death sentence and the Black and Tans had their man. John was immediately shot dead on the door step. A few days later John’s remains were laid to rest in Tibohine cemetery. Despite the fact that there were enemy forces in the cemetery on the day of the burial, John’s comrades discharged three gunshots over his coffin as a final salute to a brave and loyal soldier of the Irish Republic. The ceremony on Sunday also commemorated the memory of Volunteer Thomas McDonagh from Co. Sligo. Thomas McDonagh, who was part of the South Sligo Brigade, was actually the first IRA casualty of the Black and Tan War in Co. Ros-
common. Thomas lost his life a short distance from Tibohine in the Ratra Ambush which occurred 99 years ago in September 1920. He was born in the US and was reared in Cloonloo, Co. Sligo. McDonagh was part of an ambush party that had hoped to disarm an RIC patrol at Ratra. The plan was to surprise the patrol and capture their weapons without firing a shot. But the encounter led to an exchange of gunfire between the RIC and the IRA. Thomas McDonagh was killed when he was confronted

by armed RIC men and was unable to defend himself after his revolver misfired due to faulty ammunition. He was just 20-years-old when he met his death on the roadside in Ratra on September 1st 1920. Thomas was once described by a comrade “as being a fine cut of a young man”. His remains now rest in Temple Ronan Cemetery, about five miles from Tibohine on the northern side of Lough Gara in Sligo. Sunday’s commemoration ended with the Raheen Pipe Band playing the National Anthem.

P lanning your Wedding Day
Don’t let stress ruin your big day WEDDINGS AT THE RADISSON BLU HOTEL, ATHLONE
CALL AISHLING ON 090 644 2600
MIRIAM KERINS
Anyone planning a wedding, whether it’s a small intimate affair or a massive party, is highly likely to experience some form of stress. Unless of course you’re my husband who just doesn’t do stress, because, according to him, I stress for everyone. Anyhow, if you’re a stressed-out bride or groom about to embark on what should be the most exciting event of your life, we’ve got a few calming tips we hope will see you through. First of all, we’re not medical experts, so if your stress levels are causing you to experience panic attacks, etc., please speak with your doctor. If you’re someone who knows in advance that certain situations or encounters with certain people are likely to cause you stress, then avoid them by either finding ways to make them either more manageable or delegate them to someone else. That someone else could be your venue’s wedding planner, your matron of honour/best man or a trusted friend or relative. We know it’s hard, but try not to compare your wedding to someone else’s. Look, if your cousin insists on texting you about her workmate’s wedding where Mary Berry made the cake and Meghan Markle’s designer made the gown, send her back a smiley emoji, after
all, she’s always been an enthusiastic little soul… then ignore her. This is your day and meeting the expectations of others should never be on the agenda. Don’t start second-guessing yourself and worrying about things that could perhaps have been done better or that could possibly go wrong on the day. To do this will overwhelm you and take the enjoyment out of the occasion for both you and your future husband/wife. Instead, try and be kind to yourself, and deflect those negative thoughts by booking a facial or a relaxing massage, or have your nails done, then book in for a wash and blow dry and go out for a nice meal with your future husband/wife. Try to dip in and out of social media as opposed to becoming obsessed with logging on to that
crafty work colleague, whom, like a recession-proof squirrel, has only gone and DIY-ed her entire wedding using nothing more than a plant pot and a wooden pallet. You’re getting married, not auditioning for a spot on Blue Peter, so stop wishing you were more creative, spend your spare time catching up on some beauty sleep and understand you’re doing your day, your way! Try to avoid that week-beforeyour-big-day annoying guest questions like…how much is it to stay at the hotel? What time does the ceremony begin? I’ve got no babysitter; can I bring my six kids??? Spell everything out in the invitations, or, better still, set up a group Facebook page or a wedding website and politely direct all guests to the FAQ section and let them at it!

Smith says Farage ‘has a cheek’ to run for Europe! Brendan Smith TD, a Fianna Fail candidate in the European elections in MidlandsNorth West constituency, said it is “beyond belief” that Nigel Farage is contesting the EU Parliament elections. Mr. Smith said that he hopes the people of Britain will “see through” Farage and deny him a seat. Speaking in Dundalk, he said that, over the past 12 months, thousands of families and businesses on both sides of the Border have watched the unfolding drama of Brexit talks in fear of their future. “Amidst all this uncertainty, Nigel Farage announces he is contesting the EU Parliament elections. It is beyond belief that Nigel Farage, who used UKIP to get Britain out of Europe, has decided to seek re-election to the Euro-

pean Parliament. “I think Nigel Farage has a cheek to run in the European Parliament elections. This man and his colleagues have brought disruption, despair and uncertainty for thousands of people throughout the island of Ireland,” he said. The Fianna Fail MidlandsNorth-West EU Parliament
constituency candidate in the European election said that this was the 21st anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. It is, he said, an agreement that brought two communities in Ireland closer and forged strong relationships between Ireland and Britain, Ireland and Europe and the United States. “I have lived all my life in
a border county and have been privileged to represent a large border constituency in Dáil Eireann. I have experienced the benefit of the co-operation between the Border counties as well as the EU supports and investments across all sections of the Border communities. “This year, however, I have witnessed the fear of the impact of Brexit on communities and businesses on both sides of the border. Hopefully the voters in Britain will see through Mr. Farage and deny him a seat after the damage he and his group have caused and his attitude to Europe. We need an EU Parliament that can meet the many challenges of Europe and deliver for its citizens, not those who have little regard for the people of Europe”.

Kilduff says people power can help achieve action over N61 concerns Independent candidate Donal Kilduff says traffic calming measures are required on the N61 in the interests of public safety. “The N61 is a national primary road from Athlone to Roscommon and on to Boyle. In recent years the level of traffic on the road has increased significantly to a point where safety is now a major concern for motorists. I live along the N61 and witness first-hand the level of traffic each day and particularly at peak times.
It is clear that traffic calming measures are required in some locations and proper turning lanes are required at many junctions in the interest of public safety”. Mr. Kilduff added: “To be fair to all the existing elected members of Roscommon County Council, they have been calling for action on the N61 for many years and some improvement works have taken place but much more needs to be done. “Roscommon County Council is anx-
ious to proceed with the necessary works without delay but they require sanction and funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland or TII to proceed. TII are dragging their heels and do not seem to be taking the matter as seriously as it should be. Maybe TII would respond more timely to public safety concerns and representations from local authorities if the government provided sufficient funds”. He continued: “To be honest I do not
believe that any newly-elected councillor will be able to lobby TII any harder that the current councillors have done. I do however believe in people power and that the public can help to drive this issue forward”. Towards this end, Mr. Kilduff has prepared a short video highlighting the level of traffic on the road and noting the dangers particularly at peak times. “I am asking you the public to like, share and comment on this video on my
Facebook page Donal Kilduff Election Candidate as a sign of your concern and desire for immediate action on the issue. “If elected to Roscommon County Council, I would use your level of engagement and feedback as leverage when in talks with TII and it would send a clear and powerful message that the public are extremely concerned about their safety on the N61 and it is high time for TII and the government to get the finger out and take immediate action”.
Connolly calls for increased effort on job creation
Fallon seeks review of sheep tagging rules
Independent councillor and local election candidate Domnick Connolly has called on the Government to increase its efforts to create jobs in rural Ireland and in Roscommon in particular. He said: “The economy continues to improve and there are plenty of job announcements around the country on a regular basis but sadly none of those relate to County Roscommon. “I am calling on the Government, the IDA and Enterprise Ireland to increase their efforts to provide employment here in County Roscommon. “Their efforts in recent years have been almost non-existent and it’s time that the issue was highlighted and I shall be doing so during the course of this election campaign” he concluded.
Cllr. Laurence Fallon has called on the Minister for Agriculture to review recent changes to the sheep tagging and traceability system. “The electronic tagging system recently introduced by the Minister for Agriculture for all sheep is extremely costly given the value of the animals,” stated Cllr. Fallon, who is an Independent candidate in Athlone LEA. “It is disappointing that while farmers are being told they have no option but to introduce this system both livestock marts and factories are given the option of whether
to introduce it. This means there are now two different standards: one for individual farmers and one for large factories and livestock marts. “This needs to be changed in order that the traceability is clearly identified and that the farmers who are paying for the tags are getting the same value both at factory level and at mart level. “The Minister has now stopped the purchase of traditional mart tags and factory tags at source level. I am calling on the Minister to allow a dual system for sheep
going to factories until such as time as farmers who have substantial numbers of traditional tags can use them up successfully. “It is a waste of money for farmers to be in possession of tags that have now gone out of date. This situation could also cause issues for farmers during inspections at future dates when they are asked to explain what became of the tags they couldn’t use. As such I would ask the Minister to review this situation as soon as possible,” concluded Cllr. Fallon.

Casey’s plans to seize property ‘are damaging and absurd’

Marty goes poster-free! Marty McDermott, a Fianna Fáil candidate in Roscommon Municipal District, has announced that he will be running a poster-free campaign in the May local elections. Mr. McDermott said that this is a big decision for a first-time candidate but that he was determined to show his commitment on environmental issues and to also show solidarity with the “excellent work of local Tidy Towns’ groups”.
On Wednesday, Mr. McDermott said: “First-time candidates who might opt not to use a traditional poster-campaign are arguably at a disadvantage, because candidates who have run for election before have usually used posters in the past, or at the very least are easily recognised. Obviously a firsttime candidate is anxious to achieve a recognition factor with the public, but I feel strongly about the environment and that is why I am committing to a
poster-free campaign”. Mr. McDermott said that he has been personally canvassing local areas nightly and is receiving very positive feedback. “People have been very nice and have raised a number of issues with me. I am out every day meeting the people and knocking on doors and listening to people. I will try to meet as many people as possible in person over the course of the campaign”.
A policy proposal by Peter Casey to seize vacant rural properties, and another policy proposal to leave the Euro, are both damaging and absurd, Midlands North West EU candidate Dr. Fidelma Healy Eames has said. Mr. Casey told the Irish Daily Mail that he would compel the sale of homes that were vacant for a set period, which is unconstitutional in the first instance, and not a competence of the EU parliament in the second. He also told the newspaper that he would seek a referendum on leaving the Euro, which again is not something he could do as a member of the European Parliament, or something that would benefit our country for that matter. Responding, Fidelma Healy Eames said: “This is silly stuff from a man who should know better. Many vacant homes are vacant for a good reason – because families have had to emigrate temporarily for work, or because parents have died, or because the rental market in rural Ireland is not what it is in Dublin.
“Mr. Casey wants to take property from families who have worked hard for it, sometimes over multiple generations. It’s an absurd and reckless proposal. In relation to his comments on the euro, this would be hugely damaging to our economic stability and the livelihoods of people in rural Ireland. “Mr. Casey seems to be the one man in Ireland who has looked at the instability caused by Brexit and decided that we need some of that here. “The priorities for people in rural Ireland are clear - we need more EU investment in our communities and infrastructure and we need someone to fight for farming. “Those will be my priorities when elected. We need EU parliamentarians who know what they are doing and what they are trying to achieve – not somebody who says the first thing that comes into his head and whose policies are neither beneficial, nor achievable”.
Why youth should consider apprenticeships – Coffey Mid-Roscommon Fine Gael candidate Gerry Coffey is encouraging Roscommon teenagers to look into taking apprenticeships in sectors where there is now a shortage of workers. Mr. Coffey is aware of Roscommon employers who are struggling in 2019 to hire people for roles in construction and other sectors. Gerry Coffey says it shows that young people
who are considering postsecondary school career options should look at the apprenticeship route. “I have spoken to several local employers in recent weeks who are struggling to find people to work in vacant positions. For example, I spoke last week with a plant hire business that is struggling to find drivers with suitable tickets. “Teenagers can be over-
whelmed at this time of year by hype that often surrounds discussion about leaving cert points, CAO forms, college places, etc. I encourage students who are looking at third level options to also look at the apprenticeship route and to look at skilled roles in sectors that provide good employment and where local businesses are currently struggling to find people”.
Geraghty to launch campaign in Williamstown Five years ago, Michael Fitzmaurice took many by surprise when he won great support and was elected to Galway County Council on his first attempt before later going on to take a Dáil seat. Declan Geraghty from Williamstown is now hoping to follow in his footsteps and win a seat for the local, independent voice for the northeast Galway area. Declan will launch his campaign in the Parish Hall, Williamstown on Saturday night (27th) at 8.30 pm and has issued an open invitation to all who support his campaign. Declan is a well-known and popular businessman and an important employer in the Williamstown area. He is also well known for his strong views on the importance of keeping
rural areas alive. Speaking ahead of his campaign launch, he said: “I admire the work that Michael Fitzmaurice has done since he was first elected. After he became a TD, Des Joyce took over from him as county councillor and I thank Des for his work and I wish him well for the future,” said Declan. “If given the opportunity, I look forward to representing the people and families of the Ballinasloe Municipal Area and I will make every effort possible to bring development to this area and to boost small businesses and employment”. Declan says that many small businesses in rural areas are suffering due to the fact the commercial rates are levied on the size of a business
rather than their income and profits. He said he would like to see CAP payments targeted so that the family farm is given more support. Declan also sees the closure of services such as post offices, Garda stations, banks, shops and pubs as a severe blow to rural areas. Declan added that Galway County Council has been working hard to help rural communities through various schemes and policies and he would like to be a part of this work and to help strengthen the partnership between the council and local groups. “I would like to ask everybody to consider me for their No. 1 vote when they go to the polls in May,” he concluded.

ELECTION DESK Cllr. Naughten seeks survey of St. Coman’s Park footpaths Cllr. John Naughten has confirmed he is to raise the issue of the current condition of footpaths in the St. Coman’s Park estate in Monksland with Roscommon County Council. “I will be asking the Council to survey the footpaths with a view to upgrading them, particularly as this is one of the older estates in Monksland and some of the paths are now in a very poor condition,” explained Cllr. Naughten. “There are quite a number of elderly residents in this estate and I will be asking the Council to address the condition of the footpaths as a matter of urgency to bring them to an acceptable standard for pedestrians in Cllr. John Naughten the area”.

Independent election candidate for the Boyle Municipal electoral area Tom Crosby has this week welcomed the announcement by Minister Sean Canney that the village of Tulsk is set to become part of the digital age. “This funding is being made available through the Dormant Accounts Fund and was confirmed at the launch of the Western Development Commission’s (WDC) new five-year Strategic Plan ‘Work Smarter, Live Better’ this week. “It will see the establishment of an up to date digital working space in the region, one of many made available throughout the country thanks to a total of over €644,000 allocated under the latest round of the Rural Regeneration Tom Crosby. Programme,” he said.
Waldron launches campaign…with a little help from ‘Boxer’ Anthony (Tony) Waldron, who is running as an Independent candidate in next month’s local elections, formally launched his campaign in a packed Garvey’s pub in Ballintubber. Minister of State Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran was present to endorse Anthony’s
candidacy. Mr. Waldron spoke about his focus on having the rural voice heard in all matters that affect rural life. His campaign programme emphasises the need to find alternative ways of creating sustainable local employment,

combating rural deprivation and reinforcing both physical and mental health services for both young and old in County Roscommon, services that he says have been severely eroded over many years. One of the central themes of An-
thony’s plan is the promotion of tourism in what is a heritage-rich county. He points to the many spin-off benefits of tourism for local communities, including the generation of employment in local businesses and ancillary services – something other counties
have experienced through proper integrated planning. He also highlighted his experience with the Castlerea Enterprise Hub over many years and said that this a great example of what local enterprise can achieve with the right planning, financ-
ing and facilities. In particular, he emphasised the potential of linking the food hub (An Chistin) with an integrated tourist plan. Mr. Waldron previously sat on the Council as a Fianna Fail councillor between 2004 and 2009.

WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION The prophet Daniel in a vision saw “One like the Son of Man” receive everlasting kingship (see Daniel 7:9–14). John is taken to heaven in today’s Second Reading where he sees Daniel’s prophecy fulfilled in Jesus, who appears as “One like a Son of Man”. Jesus is clad in the robe of a High Priest (see Exodus 28:4; Wisdom 18:24) and wearing the gold sash of a king (see 1 Maccabees 10:89). He has been exalted by the right hand of the Lord, as we sing in today’s Psalm. His risen body, which the Apostles touch in today’s Gospel, has been made a life-giving Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 15:45). As the Father anointed Him with the Spirit and power (see Acts 10:38), Jesus pours out that Spirit on the Apostles, sending them into the world “as the Father has sent Me”. Jesus “breathes” the Spirit of His divine life into the Apostles - as God blew the “breath of life” into Adam (see Genesis 2:7), as Elijah’s prayer returned “the life breath” to the dead child (see 1 Kings 17:21–23), and as the Spirit breathed new life into the slain in the valley of bones (see Ezekiel 37:9–10). His creative breath unites the Apostles - His Church - to His body, and empowers them to breathe His life into a dying world, to make it a new creation. In today’s Gospel and First Reading, we see the Apostles fulfilling this mission with powers only God possesses the power to forgive sins and to work “signs and wonders,” a biblical expression only used to describe the mighty works of God (see Exodus 7:3; 11:10; Acts 7:36). Thomas and the others saw “many other signs” after Jesus was raised from the dead. They saw and they believed. They have been given His life, which continues in the Church’s Word and sacraments, so that we who have not seen might inherit His blessings and “have life in His name”. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory. com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

FRANK BRANDON’S
unique take on life ...
Local charity working to tame a growing problem! As you may know by now, every so often my long suffering wife, Carol, and I head across to Cabo Roig, a nice little place on the far side of Spain, where we can relax in the sun for a few days and enjoy what is a really friendly seaside village. It is a place that has everything that we would want in a holiday destination; fabulous scenery, great walks, top quality beaches, and any amount of golf clubs, as well as the obligatory selection of good pubs and restaurants, and fine weather. So what’s the catch I hear you ask? In truth, there is none, and yet, for the last few years, you could hardly fail to notice the ever-increasing numbers of wild cats that seem to have sprung up overnight. Now I freely admit that I am fan of cats, but, while I
would remark on the large numbers and indeed on the tourists who feed them, if I had not been contacted by a reader of this column about a similar problem in this country, I would probably never have thought about them again! Wild or feral cats are now very plentiful here in Ireland, and because the female is such a prolific breeder, who can have three litters a year with an average of five kittens per litter, it doesn’t need Einstein or any other mathematical genius to figure out that, without some intervention, we will soon have a major problem on our hands. The end result of uncontrolled breeding is large numbers of wild cats roaming the countryside, hungry, possibly disease ridden, and impossible to han-
dle or tame, and many of these will be poisoned or trapped and killed by people who get fed up of their constant fighting, yowling, or just their very presence around a house. Fortunately however, an organisation called TNR South Roscommon (Trap, Neuter, and Return) is in existence in this area, and its aim is to keep the feral cat population under control, by doing exactly what it says on the tin, and by raising public awareness of the necessity of spaying and neutering stray cats. TNR is a non-profit registered charitable organisation, formed by Orla Hanley some years ago, and Orla has coordinated the veterinary care, professionally offered at Cloverhill Veterinary Surgery. In simple language, if
you want to get a stray cat that you might be feeding, spayed or neutered, you can contact TNR and they will organise everything for the discounted sum of €10. When everything is sorted they will return your feline friend and you will have played your part in keeping the wild cat population under control. As with a lot of these organistions they rely almost exclusively on public donations to keep them going, and so they have two fundraising efforts coming up - this Saturday (27th), they are having a bucket collection at SuperValu, Roscommon, while the following day (Sunday 28th), there is a Sale of Work in the Courthouse, Ballygar, from 10 am to 2 pm., with all kinds of everything including jewellery, clothes, ornaments, and toys, all
generously donated by members of the public, available for purchase. Orla and her loyal team of volunteers are doing an amazing job in a very important area, so if you happen to be shopping in Supervalu, Roscommon on Saturday or if you can get to Ballygar on Sunday dig deep, and give them any help you can. I’m also told they also have an online shop so you can support them that way as well. As I said, I am not a cat man but, nonetheless, they don’t deserve to find themselves cold, hungry or homeless and a little kindness and compassion could help to make their lives, and ours, a lot easier. I wonder does Orla know anyone in Cabo Roig, who could sort out the problem over there?

Lyra’s murder casts a dark shadow
Normally at this stage I would be going on to matters of a lighter nature, but events in Derry on Good Friday cast a shadow over the entire country and the murder of journalist, Lyra McKee, by the New IRA has provoked a reaction of horror and outrage not seen since the murder in 1996, of another journalist, Veronica Guerin. Now I have no intention of moralising on the actions of these so-called ‘activists’, but it was so heartening to see the reaction of people who live in nationalist areas of Northern Ireland, and the total and utter con-
demnation of the cowardly murder of an innocent woman makes me think that all is not lost. I have to say that there can be nothing more cowardly than shooting from the shadows at human targets, whether they are police officers, or in this case, ordinary local residents, and if anything good is to come out of this, let us hope it’s that the local communities come together and show the gunmen that their day is long gone. I am writing this on Tuesday evening and it is highly significant that our President, Michael D Hig-
gins and Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, will both be in attendance at Lyra’s funeral. In doing so, they honour the memory of a young journalist, who, in every way, showed a lot more courage than the shooter who took her life. It is sadly ironic that her murder took place on the day the whole country and indeed the world was celebrating the 21st anniversary of the Good Friday Peace Agreement. The greatest testimony to Lyra’s memory will hopefully be the fact that nothing will be allowed to undermine that peace agreement. May she rest in peace.
Finally onto lighter matters, and surprise, surprise on Easter Sunday night I found myself in Mikeen’s where a young band, Odd Sox, were providing the musical entertainment. Even though I had heard a lot of good things about them, this was the first night I had the chance to see them live. Now I have to tell you they more than lived up to their blossoming reputation, and their lively music, aided by a substantial helping of Mikeen’s porter, had me, as they say, strutting my stuff on the dance floor. I even felt my dancing was good enough to get me a call-up to ‘Dancing with the Stars’ however on the night the award for the ‘Best Dancer’ went to Michael Fleming Jnr, who produced a dance that was impossible to describe but was mostly built around the splits. For content, style and entertainment value he was a worthy winner and walked away with the first cup we could find which was in fact the Tug O’ War Cup! Young Mike is heading for Canada in the near future so to be going as the Champion Dancer of Creggs is a great boost for him, and we wish him well. Odd Sox are definitely worth a look and despite my disappointment at not winning the Dancing Competition, I have to say we had a great bit of craic, and thoroughly enjoyed the night. Before I finish, this Friday night coming I am quizmaster at a table quiz in Mikeen’s to raise funds for St. Ciaran’s boys and girls who are hosting Féile later in the year. My neighbour Mary Keane is organising the event, and I hope everyone makes the effort to be there - it will all kick off at 9.30 pm and there will be a raffle with loads of nice prizes to be won. Hope to see you there!
Till next week, Bye for now!

MUSINGS
Words of wit and wisdom with MIRIAM KERINS
Is there a code of omertà around Mother and Baby homes? Last week we celebrated 70 years since our country officially became a republic, (it happened at midnight Easter Monday on 18th of April 1949), yet I for one, a normally proud Irishwoman, feel sick to my stomach and thoroughly ashamed. You see, (in the same week), according to a new report, the burial locations of hundreds of babies and children who died in the State’s notorious mother and baby hell-holes remains unknown. Now, with regard to our highly respected neighbours in Tuam, the institution, (run by the Sisters of Bons Secours), was situated on a site allegedly operated and owned by Galway County Council, whom, in the face of deep criticism relating to them not being able to produce a legally required Register of Burials, is, let me state, insisting it is ‘fully co-operating with the investigation’. Now, during the course of my work, I’ve visited Tuam many times, and let me declare that it is populated by wonderfully decent human beings, people who deserve respect. However, as the town is sadly notorious as being the location of the disreputable Mother and Baby home, which harbours a mass burial site containing the remains of hundreds of babies who perished while in the care of the Order who ran it, I’d have to agree with the investigation and say that yes, it’s entirely possible that some local workers would’ve passed through its grounds on a regular basis. And, given this theory, I’d imagine that this week, the stench of humiliation, remorse, guilt, hypocrisy, and possibly fear
is permeating that normally glorious Tuam air. In relation to Bessborough, which was run by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary, I’d also agree with the report when it asserts, that, it is “very difficult to comprehend” how those who managed it have no information to offer concerning the locations of the burial places of the hundreds of infants and children who died in their care. Are we expected to believe that not a single, solitary, chaste, Godfearing Catholic among this lot has any credible info whatsoever, and can’t (or refuse) to provide even a smidgen of a clue that’d point families in the right direction? Look Sisters, maths isn’t my strong point, but if, between the decades of 1920 and 1980 nine hundred little souls perished at Bessborough, I make that fifteen deaths a year, so it’s absolutely staggering that not one single nun among you can come forward and break their silence; leading me to ask if there’s some sort of omertà in place here? If this shameful practice had happened anywhere else in the EU, the entire scandal would be referred to The Hague…and rightly so! Well done to Minister Katherine Zappone, who appears to be genuinely doing her best to get to the bottom of this horror, and who has passionately appealed to anyone with answers relating to these places of persecution to “let us know where they (the children) are buried”. I mean no disrespect to our wonderful neighbours in Tuam, and I fully understand we are
living in very different times. I empathise with those of you who may have information but whom, up to now, for whatever reason, have (disgracefully) remained silent. However, whether these tight-lipped individuals are possible members of the local clergy, are close family, or indeed, are possibly former members of an Garda Síochána, or are a part of the local community and council, etc., I’d implore you, given the revelations, and given the unspeakable horrors that befell these innocent little angels, it’s reasonable to assume your continued silence may be construed as not only be-
I’m keeping the dogs! You’re probably already aware, but a prenuptial agreement has absolutely no basis in Irish law, and is, therefore not binding. However, while there may be many reasons why a couple would sign a pre-nup prior to tying the knot, (money being the main one), as far as I’m concerned, retaining custody of the beloved fur babies would definitely be top of my list! I only mention this because the fight to retain custody of the family pet following a divorce is on the rise here in Ireland. And, as I love my doggies as much as I love my kids, (more, according to my eldest), I can fully understand
this scenario and it’s for this very reason, as well as the fact that, according to the UK’s Blue Cross, ‘30,000 divorce cases in the past year involved a dispute over a pet,’ that, on an occasion where I’m asked to carry out a voluntary home-check for an animal rescue charity, I’ve been known to ask the surprised applicants the one question everyone else avoids, and that is, have they made plans for the pet in the unlikely event they go their separate ways? When the answer’s ‘er, no,’ I ask, well, are they planning to return the poor dog/cat back to the rescue? When the reply is, ‘well yes probably,’ I follow up with, does the same

apply to the kiddies? As in, will they pack up the cherubs and return them to the maternity hospital? No…of course they won’t! So isn’t it reasonable for me to ask them to consider making arrangements for their pets prior to their commitment to adopt. Therefore, (and not that I’m contemplating it whatsoever because I adore him), but, if he-who-can-assemble-an-entire-car-enginewith-his-eyes-shut-yet-can’t-tidy-away-hisspanners and myself ever decide we no longer deserve our Lifetime Achievement Award for putting up with each other, let me state here and now that I’m keeping our dogs!
ing your acceptance, but possibly your collusion in the unauthorised and unrecorded disposal of innocent babies and young children’s bodies; babies who were Irish citizens with both legal and human rights. So today, examine that part of your conscience making you stand idly by, and come out and tell us what you know. The families, and indeed Ireland as a whole, needs a forensic investigation to bring about clarification and justice for these children and their mothers. Well done on an ‘egg-cellent’ Easter Parade! There was a great buzz in the county town last Sunday as locals donned their glad rags and flocked to the town’s annual Easter Parade. Well done to everyone who took part. The sun shone on what was definitely a healthy dose of community spirit at its very best with everyone in attendance looking happy and content…and why shouldn’t they be? Roscommon is a thriving county, full of fantastic people who not only believe in promoting and cultivating sense of belonging, they showcase it. Other counties would do well to take note! Just sayin’!

Kilcroan are Cumann na mBunscol quiz masters! Following a thrilling, highquality contest, Kilcroan NS emerged victorious in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Roscomáin sports quiz which took place in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon town on Wednesday, March 20th. The nineteen teams answered questions on an array of sports, ranging from GAA to athletics, rugby to soccer, horse racing to hockey, with even one question on Harry Potter’s favourite sport, Quidditch! In a dramatic finale, the Kilcroan NS team of Eoin Collins, Conor Kennedy, Conor McGann and Ella McNamara were crowned champions by one point, with a superb score of 72. However, the excitement didn’t finish there as Roxboro NS and Ballymurray NS were deadlocked on 71 points each and so a tie-break was needed. The two teams each answered four out of five questions correctly in the first round of the tie-break, before the Roxboro NS team of Aaron Bracken, Jonathan Greene, Jack Hayes and Jack Raftery clinched second place in a nail-biting second tie-break round. The Ballymurray NS team of Cian Duggan, Gavin Staunton, Luke Staunton and Daniel Tiernan distinguished themselves in the competition proper and the tie-break. Quizmaster Noel Dervan kept the contestants and the crowd entertained throughout the evening. The teams who finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd were presented with their trophies by the new chairman of Cumann na mBunscol Roscomáin, Senan Kilbride, who was also the subject of two questions on the night.

‘Tasty’ workshops in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands Fáilte Ireland is inviting businesses and individuals in the Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands area, who are interested in providing tourists with a food or drink experience to attend workshops in June to find out how they can get involved in their new initiative – ‘Taste the Island – a celebration of Ireland’s food and drink’ which takes place this coming autumn. Workshops will take place at the following locations throughout the region: Kilronan Castle from 9.30 am to 2 pm on Thursday, June 6th; Athlone Dead Centre Brewing from 9.30 am to 2 pm on Tuesday, June 11th; The Lakeside Hotel, Killaloe from 9.30 am to 2 pm on Thursday, June 13th. The new initiative has been developed in response to the growing global interest in food and drink by Fáilte Ireland, in collaboration with Tourism Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and a range of stakeholders. Taste the Island will showcase Ireland’s world-class food and drink culture across the island of
Ireland from September to November to provide visitors with access to authentic food and drink experiences, high quality local ingredients and world class Irish food and drink produce. The extensive programme running over three months will seek to create an awareness and renewed appreciation at home and abroad of the strength and richness of Ireland’s cuisine today. rolled out throughout the country to inform the local food and drink industry about this exciting initiative for food and drink providers. The workshops have been organised for the industry to learn more and provide them with the opportunity to shape the development of a programme of events and experiences for 2019. Martina Kerr Bromley, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Enterprise Development, said: “We are urging
people in the food and drink industry throughout Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, to get involved and participate in our upcoming workshops in your area (see workshop schedule below). The programme of events for ‘Taste the Island’ will include visits to food producers, distillers and brewers; food trails, food festivals, participation in traditional skills, opportunities to forage, traditional pubs, small-town cafés, restaurants, city bistros and Michelin-starred experiences. “This initiative supports Fáilte Ireland’s strategic imperative to address seasonality and grow revenue by driving increasing bed nights outside of the summer season while also driving visitors to explore lesser-known locations across the country and will, in the long term, enhance Ireland’s international food and drink reputation before they get here”. Businesses or events interested in this new initiative are invited to come along to the workshops to hear about how tourism can play a role in their business.

Beef Plan Movement calls for immediate price rise DAN DOONER
Beef Plan Movement members are demanding an immediate increase in the base price for beef by Ireland’s processors after their submission to the Joint Oireachtas committee and following their first meeting with Meat Industry Ireland (MII) last week. Beef Plan used both forums to feed back the disquiet and anger among the 19,000 farmers they represent. The recent Oireachtas committee was told that for the last
ten years farmers have been paid less than their counterparts in Europe for U3 and R3 steers. The Beef Plan Movement has said that the buck stops with processors and retailers and that it was vital that processors listened to their suppliers, particularly at this time of year when supply traditionally starts to tighten. A spokesperson for the movement said: “All organisations are calling for action – the bottom line is that Beef Plan demand and expects immediate action in the form
of a price rise – a significant price rise to recover somewhat a very bleak situation. The current price is 40c/kg below this week last year which equates to €140 on a 350kg carcass. No farmer can afford this price differential year to year. “Considering the price drop for beef since the Brexit vote was first passed in the UK and compare this to the corresponding milk price over the same period, it could be contended that there has been an opportunistic and significant drop by beef processors compared to
their dairy counterparts”. The movement points to recent media coverage as proof that organisations including ICSA, ICMSA, IFRG and Beef Plan have a common view on the four movement rule and also 30 month age limit among other specifications. The Beef Plan Movement said it would welcome collaboration and engagement between the organisations to abolish non value-add specifications, adding that it would be voicing concerns on behalf of farmers to EU candidates.
Beef Producers group continues to grow DAN DOONER
The North East Galway Beef Producers group continues to go from strength to strength. The group meets two Mondays a month and its membership has grown substantially in the last three years. Recent speakers have included local public representatives such as Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice and Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice (both pictured right) and well-known names in the agricultural sector including Irish Farmers Journal Editor, Justin McCarthy, who recently addressed a large meeting of the group at Williamstown
Parochial Hall. Chairman of the group, Ronan Kelly, says the group has united small farmers in the area. “The group is going for the last 20 years and until about three years ago we had just 30 to 40 members

but now there are over 130 members and still growing. “We have ten meetings a year which usually take place on the second Monday of the month and feature guest speakers who talk about all farming prac-
tices and the business of farming. “The committee aims to provide farmers with information and being small farmers ourselves, we all stand together and learn what we can about the new CAP and schemes and
payments. “We also have our own quality beef scheme competition which is great for our members to enter and that has eleven categories in terms of cattle sold in the mart and killed in factory”.

IFA members protested at the Department of Health last Tuesday.
IFA stage ‘Unfair Deal’ protest Roscommon IFA Farm Family & Social Affairs Chairperson, Frances Keane, said the Government has abandoned farm families by failing to implement the three-year cap on farm assets under the financial assessment of the Fair Deal scheme. Mrs. Keane said it is now nearly nine months since Cabinet approved the proposal to introduce a three-year cap on
farm and small businesses assets, where a family successor commits to continue to farm the asset for a period of six years. “Farm families are beyond frustrated with the delays. When Minister Daly announced last July that he had Cabinet approval to introduce a cap and that he would be progressing the matter in the Oireachtas in the autumn session, we thought
we had reached the finish line. Unfortunately, that was not the case and we find ourselves protesting. “In the time since Cabinet approved the proposal, it has cost individual farm families an estimated €40,000 in nursing home costs,” she said. IFA is calling for the changes to be introduced without any further delay and retrospec-
tively applied to July when the Cabinet approved proposal for new and existing farmers availing of the Fair Deal scheme. The association also believes that the three-year cap must also be applied to farms that are currently leased, but where a family successor gives a verified commitment that they would continue to farm the asset for a period of six years.

Speaking at the launch of the recent climate report in Dáil Éireann, IFA President Joe Healy said the Teagasc plan is the basis for further climate action in agriculture and is far better than the unrealistic proposals put forward by the Citizens’ Assembly. “The recommendations regarding the development of farm-scale and community renewables have the potential to make a real difference. However, this requires changes to grid connection, planning policy and the design of the renewable electricity support scheme to support farm-scale and community renewables”. IFA expressed concern that the proposed increase in carbon tax will impose significant costs on farm families and rural communities who do not have alternatives. “A just climate transition
means leaving no-one behind. It is unjust to impose a punitive carbon tax in the absence of alternatives.” Joe Healy said if the horticulture sector is to develop in line with the Committee’s proposals, it needs policies to make it robust and sustainable. “To date, the Government has failed to regulate against unsustainable discounting and to appoint an independent retail regulator to police the grocery market,” he said. “Currently, the European Commission is proposing a €100m cut to the annual CAP budget. It is not sustainable to expect farmers to keep delivering more with less, despite the fact that almost 90% of the existing CAP Rural Development Programme is already focused on environmental and climate protection”. In forestry, IFA is look-
ing for a payment for ecosystem services to provide an income from areas set aside for biodiversity. IFA Environment Chairman Thomas Cooney said: “Over 212,000 carbon assessments have been completed, as part of Bord Bia’s Origin Green programme. Over 40% of farmers participate in the Green Low Carbon AgriEnvironment Scheme. Over 1,000 farmers interact in the voluntary Smart Farming programme. “Yes, agriculture’s emissions are significant, but that reflects the importance of the sector to the national economy. However, while agriculture’s emissions have declined by 1% since 1990, emissions from sectors such as transport are spiralling out of control, increasing by 133%. Despite this, farming continues to be a scapegoat for climate inaction in other sectors”.

Pictured at the presentation of prizes at Roscommon Golf Club were Ruth and John Lennon.
Proud to sponsor Roscommon’s golfing masters! What’s good for Augusta National is good for Roscommon Golf Club too! It seems that ‘switching times’ is all the rage in the golfing world. Our friends in Roscommon Golf Club were due to have one of their regular ‘presentation of prizes’ evenings some time after 9 pm on Sunday night, 14th of April. That would have been usual enough. But then they thought about the appeal of day four of the US Masters, and so a quick little re-scheduling was arranged. And Roscommon Golf Club brought their presentation event forward to 8.30 pm, so that those present would be free to see the decisive action on the back nine at the Masters afterwards. Fast-forward to the Saturday night, and with stormy weather forecast, our friends at Augusta National Golf Club took the unprecedented step of bringing the closing day’s tee-off times at the Masters forward by several hours. Cue frantic rearranging of Sunday afternoon plans in thousands of households across Ireland (and elsewhere)! At Roscommon Golf Club, it simply meant that when people turned up for the 8.30 pm prize-giving, they came in praise of Tiger. The Masters was over much earlier than usual, and there was really only one subject up for discussion: the return of the Tiger. Meanwhile, here at the Roscommon People, we were delighted to sponsor our annual competition at Roscommon Golf Club recently. The Roscommon People sponsored Men’s Stableford competition was won by Thomas O’Farrell with 40 points. Charlie Farrell was runner-up (38), Michael Corcoran took the gross prize (33), Tom Donohue was third (38) and the junior prize went to Kevin Connaughton (38). – PH

SportsPeople Creggs RFC Report
THE GAIN LINE
Three Connacht finals in three days! With three Connacht Finals in three days for the U17s, U-18s and U-20s this week, it promises to be an exciting end to the rugby season at Creggs. While the club will host the Connacht v Munster Junior Inter-Provincial match on Saturday, May 11th and with the opening of new pitches and the amenity walk also to come, the club will be fully focussed on this very busy three days first. First up are the U-18.5s, who defeated Corrib two weeks ago to win the Connacht League Final. They were due to play Monivea/ Westport in the final of the Connacht U18.5 Plate yes-
terday evening (match report in next week’s issue). Next up are the U-17s who defeated Corinthians last weekend in the semifinal, will play Monivea in the final of the Connacht U-17 Plate on Saturday in Crowley Park, Galway with a kick-off time of 12 pm. Later on Saturday, Creggs U-20s will play Ballinrobe in the Connacht U-20 Plate Final, while the U-20 Cup Final will be between Corinthians and Ballina. Both games will take place in Creggs, starting at 5 pm. Connacht U-17 Plate Semi-Final: Creggs 43 Corinthians 22. A superb, attacking first half with the
wind saw Creggs run in six first half tries on Bank Holiday Monday. The hard work was being done upfront with some excellent work from Daniel Hill, Conor McNulty, Darragh Kiernan and Jack Tucker early on. The Creggs backs moved the ball very well in the excellent conditions and tries came from Naoise Coyle, Ben Finnerty, Aaron Lyons, and David Gaquin, with three conversions from Mark Purcell. Corinthians however did manage to score three tries of their own in the first half, to leave the half-time score 33-15. The second half was a much more equal affair

and with Creggs playing against the wind, there were some excellent defensive displays from Adam Donnelly, Ronan Lambe and Ethan Glennon up front while Mark Dowd and Darren Gately were called upon to defend much more which they did very well around the fringes. Out wide, Kyle Kelly, Ciaran Purcell and Daniel O’Brien were never found wanting. Corinthians did get in for a try and converted to reduce the deficit to 14 points with 22 minutes remaining but Creggs held firm and got in for a try of their own with six minutes left from Luke Divilly which Mark Purcell
converted to run out comfortable winners.
‘Give It A Try’ this summer! Give It A Try Summer 2019 is an eight-week programme run in selected clubs where girls aged from 10 to 14 can attend and learn how to play rugby in a fun environment. The ‘Give It A Try’ programme is an ideal way to kick start the participation of girls in our club or to boost existing playing numbers by attracting new young players to the game with a fun introduction to the sport.
This year there is a substantial increase in the number of Connacht clubs hosting the programme including seven clubs in Galway, three in Mayo and two in Roscommon. It all starts in Creggs RFC on the new 4G pitch on the May Bank Holiday Monday (6th) from 6.30 pm to 7.30pm. For more information, you can call Dave Purcell on 086-0434263 or email: davejpurcell@gmail. com.
Seven Creggs players in InterPro squad
agement team have named a 33-man squad for the 2019 Junior Interprovincial Championships which begin this weekend in Castlebar. There are seven Creggs players (Maurice Buckley, James Brandon, Brian Diffley, Brian Donoghue, Aidan Leech, Andrew Callaghan, Shane Dowd) in the squad and Creggs head coach Pat Cunningham is one of the assistant coaches along with Henry O’Toole from Connemara. Best of luck to all the players and management for a good start on Saturday and a strong campaign over the next three weekends.
The Connacht Junior man-
Horses for Courses Racing today is in Tipperary with a flat card off at 5.05 pm. Tomorrow, Friday, sees the first of our local meetings at Kilbeggan with its usual all national format off at 4.55 pm. Saturday has a flat card at Limerick away at 1.35 pm and a national card in Wexford off at 1.55 pm. Sunday again sees a double meeting with flat on at Proudstown Park outside Navan off at 2.05 pm and over jumps at 2.20 pm in The Cleveragh in Sligo. Tomorrow, Kilbeggan opens the new season with a 5-Y-O+ Maiden Hurdle over 2m 3f and follows with a 4 and 5-Y-O Maiden Hurdle over 2m. Next up are 2 handicap hurdle’s the first over 2m and the second over 3m. Chasing takes over with a Beginners’ Chase over 2m3f and a handicap over the same distance. Racing closes with a bumper over 2m. One that catches the eye is the dual bumper winner in the opener Batico from Ted Walsh’s yard who will be ridden as usual by owner’s son Aubrey McMahon and might be an e/w price. Mullins has three in the bumper, Gozalo was an odds-on disappointment in Punchestown and will probably be odds on again here but Paul Flynn’s Chasing Abbey, three second places, might be better value.
Fairyhouse review On Sunday in the Grade 1 Ryanair Gold Cup, WP Mullins enjoyed a 1, 2, as Voix Du
Reve beat his Closutton stable mate Real Steel by 5½l with Winter Escape a well beaten 3rd another 25l back. The other Grade 1 on the card the EBF Novices Hurdle went to the very impressive Honeysuckle from Henry de Bromhead’s with Rachel Blackmore in the saddle. Another horse to impress was Joseph O’Brien’s Uhtred in the bumper under Tom Hamilton who ran in the colours of Gigginstown. Willie Mullins added another notch to his bow on Monday when he finally won an Irish Grand National. Punters sent Ruby Walsh’s mount Burrows Saint at 6/1 favourite and they were not disappointed as Burrows Saint led home his stablemates, Isleofhopendreams and Acapella Bourgeois, by 1¾l and 5½l giving the trainer a 1, 2, 3 in the race. Isleofhopendreams was also runner-up 12 months ago. In the grade 2 Keeling’s Irish Strawberry Hurdle, Rashaan, who won his first hurdle race in Roscommon as a 3-Y-O, regained his form to win by 1½l and a nose from Not Many Left and Off You Go for Colin Kidd’s Co Carlow stable. On Monday, Ivanovich Gorbatov also rediscovered his form to beat Tudor City in the Grade A handicap hurdle by 2½l with Hearts Are Trumps another 2¾l away in 3rd. In the Joseph O’Reilly Hunter Chase Barry O’Neill proved an able deputy for the suspended Jamie Codd on Ucello Conti winning from Sizing Coal and Costal Tiep by 3½l and 2¾l. Codd was serving the controversial 7-day ban imposed by the

Cheltenham stewards. Fairyhouse is over and now it is on to the Punchestown Festival, on the 30th of the month, where some Cheltenham and Aintree rivalries will be renewed in the final national hunt festival.
General News Kupatana struck gold at Cheltenham during the week giving Paul Nicholls his 3,000th national hunt winner in Britain joining Martin Pipe and Nicky Henderson in a club of three. Nicholls had won 3,000 races including 36 in Ireland and France last February.
Point to Point Corner Racing on the northern circuit this weekend is set to start at 2 pm in Taylorstown outside Poyntzpass in Co. Down. There is a very busy day in the south on Sunday with three meetings down for decision, starting at Monksgrange near Rathnure in Wexford, Dromahane south west of Mallow, starting at 2 pm and Fairyhouse in Co. Meath away at 2.30 pm. There are 123 entries in Taylorstown on Saturday and on Sunday 145 in Monksgrange, 177 runners in Dromahane and 191 in Fairyhouse. Keep an eye on the starting times especially at Dromahane and Fairyhouse with such large entries.
Competition Time Marie Kane, Newtown, John Egan, Ballinlough and Dominick Tobin, Creggs all

Seamus Duke ON SPORT Are Leinster a cut above the rest? @SeamusDuke
The rugby season is almost at an end and with the World Cup coming up later in the year, the performances of the Irish teams in Europe and in the Pro14 have come under added scrutiny. Leinster have proven that they are a cut above the rest in the past four or five years and they underlined that last Sunday when they were outstanding against Toulouse. Their clash with Saracens in the final will be eagerly awaited. Without doubt they are the two best teams in the competi-
Championship just a month away! It’s only a little over two weeks to the big championship game against Leitrim, and Roscommon will be stepping up their preparations over the next week or ten days. Players like Brian Stack, Diarmuid Murtagh and John McManus are back in the fold and that is very welcome. Leitrim will come to Dr. Hyde Park with a fair bit of confidence after their great run in the league and subsequent promotion, and Roscommon will have to be very careful. However, it would be more than a shock if Leitrim were to prevail so all eyes will be on MacHale Park in Castlebar on Saturday, May 25th. We will be going into that in far more detail over the next few weeks but it is 33 years since Roscommon beat Mayo in the championship in Castlebar. We have to win down there some year. Why not this year? But let’s go one step at a time!
tion and the winners over the past two years clashing in the final. It was great for Leinster and for Ireland that Johnny Sexton and Robbie Henshaw were back to their best. Joe Schmidt needs every one of them for the trip to Japan. If Leinster were impressive against Toulouse, Munster were well beaten by Saracens and they have fallen behind in terms of their place on the European stage. Yes, they have done very well to get to the semi-final and they have
an excellent manager in Johann Van Graan but they will have to recruit two or three top class players of they want to take it a stage further. Connacht are having a great season and now they can look forward to Champions Cup rugby in 2020. They are probably a good bit away from being contenders but they will be hard to beat at the Sportsground. Jack Carty’s star continues to rise and he looks a certainly to be included in the Ireland squad for the World Cup.
Leinster were in formidable form in their Champions Cup semi-final against Toulouse.
Sligo end Ladies’ league hopes
Rachel Fitzmaurice takes possession forward for Roscommon during last Saturday’s Lidl Ladies NFL Division Three semi-final defeat to Sligo at Glennon Brothers’ Pearse Park. Pic: Michelle Hughes Walsh
Roscommon’s ladies footballers were pipped by Sligo in Longford last Saturday so another chance of promotion in the league has come and gone. But it’s not the end of the world for Michael Finneran’s charges. They have every chance of reversing that result in the championship and apart from Meath, Roscommon have been well capable of competing and beating any other team in the division they were in. The great work that’s going on in the county in the game in general is beginning to pay off and Roscommon’s super win against Mayo in the minor ‘A’ semi-final last Friday night was a further step along the road. Ladies Football in general has a long way to go in terms of public appeal. Last Saturday in Longford on what was a perfect day, there was a very attractive double bill of Division Three and Division One semi-finals, yet there were certainly no more than 250 people there. I was reading Cliona Foley in the Irish Independent on Monday and she made the exact same point about the action in Nowlan Park where Dublin and Cork served up a thriller in the other Division One semi-final in front of another tiny crowd. The game has made massive strides in recent years and over the past decade in particular but there is still a long way to go.
Lowry can take confidence from Heritage
Offaly native Shane Lowry can take heart from his recent performance at The Heritage.
The previous weekend we saw one of the greatest golf stories in the history of the game and while last weekend’s fare was not nearly as prestigious, there was plenty of drama as Shane Lowry was in contention at The Heritage in South Carolina. The Clara man missed out by just two shots in the end but it was a great tournament for Lowry who was so disappointing at The Masters the previous week. In fact, he looked like winning it in the last round until he missed a very short putt on the 9th green and he was never the same after that. The Chinese player CT Pan and the wily old fox Matt Kuchar passed out Lowry in the final few holes. But
to finish joint third was a splendid effort and it will give him huge confidence looking ahead to the rest of the season. I have said it consistently here over the years that on his day Lowry is as good as any other player on the tour. His short game is magical and if he can manage to drive it well he can win again this year. Seamus Power did well last weekend too which was good to see. The Waterford man has been hanging on by his fingernails on the PGA Tour over the past few years, but now after a very good top ten finish, he has plenty to look forward to for the rest of the year.
Will Solskjaer get boardroom support? While the battle for the Premier League title goes down to the wire and the Champions League semi-finals are looming there has been much talk about the demise of Manchester United over the past few weeks. Their ‘performance’ against Everton last Sunday was pathetic. When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over United looked a team transformed, but over the past four weeks the chickens have come home to roost and the players who were not good enough when Van Gaal and Mourinho were there are still not good enough! There has been no transformation. I do not agree that giving the manager job to Solskjaer was too hasty and a mistake. He is a United man through and through and understands the club and what’s required. St. Peter himself couldn’t manage that shower! However, the big question is will he be allowed to bring about the fundamental changes that are needed? There are eight to ten players who have to be shown the door. Mata, Sanchez, Matic, Lingard, Rojo, Bailly, Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Martial are just some of the names that have to be included in the cull. I would also get rid of Pogba who seems to only bother his backside when it suits him, and Lukaku who is simply not a top class centre forward. The major surgery needed will cost a fortune and I am not sure that United have the people at the top who have enough vision to allow that to happen. At the end of the day this is a billion pound business and profits are as important as anything else which is the depressing reality. Remember that after a period of dominance that lasted for over 20 years it took Liverpool almost 30 years to launch a creditable title bid once again. United’s famine is now seven years and counting. I can’t see anything happening there for at least five years more. Solskjaer will do as good a job as anyone. The culture whereby there are vastly overpaid players who could not care less about the club will have to be changed or there will be many years of disappointment ahead. The way it stands this season it looks like United will be playing in the Europa League in season 2019/20 with games on Thursday nights meaning most of their league games will be on Sundays. Hardly an appetising prospect going forward and not easy to attract top class players either.

SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER
@dan_dooner
United proving you can’t buy class! THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner I’m writing this as Manchester United take on former ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City at Old Trafford, knowing that should they win, fierce rivals Liverpool will take control in this year’s Premier League title race. How has it come to this? Sunday’s performance against Everton was the worst I’ve ever seen from a Manchester United team and probably the worst I’ve seen from a team claiming to be an elite Champions League outfit. Words such as ‘pathetic’ and ‘rancid’ have been thrown about this week and they pretty much sum events at Goodison Park up…unless you happen to be an Everton fan of course! The performance and body language from those players in pink really calls into question the vast amounts of money
lavished on young footballers. In his award winning book ‘The Club’, goalkeeper Christy O’Connor details a year with the former All-Ireland club hurling champions, St. Joseph’s DooraBarefield of Clare. The passion and dedication Christy describes is something that I believe is sadly lacking among many young professional footballers once they reach the ‘professional’ stage. Even the brilliant Ajax team are not immune to it and as the past has shown individuals can change when bigger clubs come calling with bigger salaries. Back to the Premier League, and while it’s the last thing Manchester United fans want to see, Liverpool’s season has been built on hard work and team spirit which is something to be (grudgingly) admired. If they go on to win their first title since 1990, it should serve as a lesson for big spending clubs such as Chelsea and United. That being said, it’s a lesson this Man United fan wouldn’t mind skipping!
Liverpool’s season has been built on hard work, positivity…and a bit of luck!

The sporting brief Golf CBS defeat The Roscommon CBS U-19 golfers were narrowly defeated by Royal Belfast Academical Institution at Portstewart Golf Club on Tuesday. The team, which recently won the Connacht title, included Thomas Higgins, Cian O’Connor, Alan Hill, Simon Walker, Fionn Hoare, Alan Connaughton, Michael Corcoran and Kevin Connaughton. At Roscommon Golf Club, the winner of the recent ladies’ 18-hole competition was Rosemary O’Brien while David Flynn won the men’s competition on Friday, April 19th. The ‘egg-citing’ 18-hole Stableford on Easter Saturday was won by one point by Irwin Malone whose 45 was just too good for Seamus Reilly. The Junior Prize went to CBS star Michael Corcoran. The ladies seniors’ competition was won by P. Pierse while Des Bruen was best of the gents. To Athlone next where junior members, Diarmuid O’Brien, Charlie Kelly and
Shane Cleary competed in the Connacht U-16 Open Championship at the magnificent Galway Bay course last week. From a field of 120 of the best young players in the country, Diarmuid made the cut while Charlie and Shane acquitted themselves creditably. Back at home, Enda Gormally won the recent gents’ 18-hole Stableford on Saturday, 13th and Gerry McInerney was victorious in the Wednesday Open. The recent AWGS outing was won by Vincent Connaire, the Sonas Easter Open was won by Tony Corry and Cathryn Mannion was best of the ladies in the recent 97 Club. Congratulations to Ann Geoghegan, whose score of 40 points was enough to earn her qualification for the PGA Tankard Final. Valerie Rabbitt won the recent ladies’ 18-hole competition in Castlerea, just edging Valerie Callaghan into second spot on the back nine. Matt Griffith was best of the men in last weekend’s competition. Matt finished just ahead of Keith Revins. Other results: Cat 1: Si-
mon Clarke, Cat 2: Gerry O’Gara, Cat 3: Eugene Flanagan. Finally to Boyle, where the 9-hole Stableford on April 11th was won by a man who has been staging a recovery that Tiger Woods would be proud of. Ross Andrew was victorious with 22 points while Owen Garvin was second with 18 third place went to Gerry O’Hara. The winner of the Thursday competition on the 18th was hard working treasurer, Paul Connolly with 21 points.

St. Peter’s still dreaming of treble heaven Roscommon and District League Challenge Cup Semi-Final
ST. PETER’S FC
1
BALLINASLOE TOWN
0
SEAMUS DUKE
Athlone club St. Peter’s remain on course for another treble after this narrow win against rivals Ballinasloe Town at Lecarrow on Monday. However, if Ballinasloe had taken even a couple of the many chances that they had in the first half it could have been a very different story. As it was, St. Peter’s relied on some great defending, more than a little luck, and the composure to take the chance to win the match when it presented itself to Mark Sherlock in the 54th minute. Played in glorious sunshine, Ballinasloe Town had the aid of a very strong breeze blowing directly downfield in the opening half and they totally dominated possession. Chances came and went as Peter’s dug in to defend. Darrell Flynn was wide from 20 yards in the 3rd minute and in the 16th minute Flynn’s effort was parried by Eoin Hardiman into the path of Liam Lynch whose shot was blocked. Then in the 17th minute Ballinasloe spurned a fan-
tastic chance to go ahead when Mahmoud Ginima was clean through, but he elected to chip Hardiman and the ball dropped just outside the post. Aidan Dooney’s snap shot in the 26th minute flew just wide as Ballinasloe continued to draw a blank. In the 28th minute there was a lengthy stoppage after a clash of heads between Mike Lynch of Ballinasloe and Mark McConnell of St. Peter’s. Thankfully both players were able to continue after treatment. In the 34th minute Joe Woods’ cross was headed wide by Lynch as Ballinasloe continued to boss the game but they just couldn’t get the goal they needed as they prepared to face the breeze in the second period. St. Peter’s’ only shot on the Ballinasloe goal in the opening half came in the 3rd minute of injury-time when Mark Sherlock’s effort from 15 yards flew into the side netting. It was goalless at the break. Having dominated the opening half without scoring one feared for Ballinasloe when they had to face the strong breeze and
Athlone side St. Peter’s (pictured before their drawn Premier Division clash with Castlerea Celtic in March) overcame Ballinasloe Town in the Challenge Cup semi-final on Easter Monday.
those fears were justified in the 54th minute when St. Peter’s took the lead. Conor Duignan played a super cross into the danger area and Mark Sherlock rose to guide his header to the Ballinasloe net from 10 yards out. Ballinasloe kept trying hard, but it was an uphill
struggle now. David Cullen’s super strike from 25 yards in the 65th minute flew just over the top but Peter’s were now in control. Lively Peter’s sub Jason Nugent had claims for a penalty turned down by referee Eugene Deering in the 84th minute when he was through on goal. But Pe-
ter’s were almost home and hosed and in the 4th minute of stoppage time Ballinasloe sub Cian Reynolds was red carded for a late tackle on Mark McConnell. It just wasn’t Ballinasloe’s day. St. Peter’s will now await the winners of Moore United and Boyle Celtic who play in the other semi-final this
coming weekend. St. Peter’s: Eoin Hardiman, David Donaghue, Conor Duignan (Jason Nugent, 72), Ian Dempsey (Brandon Lonbridge, 86), Scott Delaney, Niall Scullion, Daragh Concannon, Mark McConnell, Mark Sherlock (Paul Allen, 78), Gary Stephens, Mick Lee.

Sligo scupper Roscommon ladies’ promotion hopes Lidl Ladies NFL Division Three SemiFinal
SLIGO ROSCOMMON SEAMUS DUKE
A late revival in the second half of an interesting rather than thrilling Division Three semi-final at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Saturday last almost paid off for Roscommon, but Sligo held on and deservedly so too as Michael Finneran’s charges simply made too many mistakes on the day. Roscommon were marginally the better team early on and they opened up a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after only nine minutes. Points from Laura Fleming (two frees)
1-11 1-9 and a fine effort from play from Jenny Higgins in the 3rd minute the Roscommon scores. We had to wait almost ten minutes for another score, a point from play from Sligo’s Ciara Gorman. In the interim Helena Cummins had made a fine save from Sligo danger woman Katie Walsh. Sligo were on top, but they kicked a number of bad wides and dropped more efforts short to keep Roscommon in the game. A point from Laura Boles levelled the scores in the 22nd minute, and then as the match slipped into
injury-time, Ciara Gorman scored the point of the game from 40 metres out and Sligo were ahead for the first time. But in the 3rd minute of time added on Laura Fleming pointed from play to leave it 0-4 apiece at the break. Sligo were the better side in the third quarter and they opened up a gap that Roscommon were not able to close. Points from Emma Keaveney and Jacqui Mulligan in the first six minutes of the saw the Yeats County two points ahead, and two minutes later came a crucial incident that went in Sligo’s favour. Helena Cummins came out with the ball but clashed by Sligo’s Katie Walsh. Referee Des McEnery decided that the Roscommon goalkeeper had charged and not only did he award a penalty, but he sin-binned
the Michael Glavey’s net minder. Walsh blasted the spot-kick past Roscommon sub ‘keeper Sasha Lavin and Sligo were now a handsome five points to the good. Sligo maintained that five point advantage until the 49th minute. They had points from Lauren Boles and Katie Walsh (free) with Roscommon points coming from Laura Fleming and Rebecca Finan (both frees) to leave the score Sligo 1-8 Roscommon 0-6. But just when it looked like Roscommon were down and out, they sparked a revival. In the 50th minute Rebecca Finan pointed a free and with five minutes to go sub Rachel Fitzmaurice made a searing run into the heart of the Sligo defence. Her shot for goal was saved by Noelle Gormley in the Sligo goal but Siobhan

Tully was on hand to sweep the rebound home and now there was only a point between the teams. But Sligo kicked on again. Katie Walsh scored a superb point on the run and sub Sinead Regan followed up with another from play to leave them three ahead. Laura Fleming and Katie Walsh traded pointed frees in injury-time before Laura Fleming had the final say for Roscommon with a pointed free in the 6th minute of time added on. But it was too little too late and it is Sligo who will contest the league final. Roscommon manager, Michael Finneran, provided an honest assessment of his side’s performance at fulltime. “Our failure to win enough posession was probably a big factor in the game and if you’re conceding their kickouts and struggling on your own, you’re putting real pressure and extra work on your players that will take a toll over the hour. We did well at times, but then for five or six minutes at a time we mightn’t win any, so that’s something to improve on. “It was disappointing to have had three players sinbinned. It’s something we
had worked on since the last time we played Sligo, but we’re back at it again and it’s definitely something we have to improve on. If we can address that alone, we’ll come on a lot. I thought that the award against Helena Cummins was harsh in fact I thought it was a free out at the time,” he said. Sligo: Noelle Gormley; Michelle McNamara, Aoife Morrisroe, Jacqui Mulligan (0-1); Nicola Brennan, Bernice Byrne, Anne Marie Coleman; Laura Ann Laffey, Emma Keaveney (0-2); Lauren Boles (0-2), Ruth Goodwin, Sinead Naughton; Ciara Gorman (0-2), Katie Walsh (1-4, 1-0 pen 2 frees), Lisa Casey. Gaels off the mark while Pearses rally There were more interesting results in round four of the leagues played last weekend. Roscommon Gaels won their first game of the campaign, and in style too as they were the handsome winners against St. Croan’s at Lisnamult. Meanwhile, St. Faithleach’s scored another notable win when they were too good for St. Brigid’s in Ballyleague. Elsewhere, Michael Glavey’s pipped Fuerty in a high-scoring game at Mulhern Park while Pádraig Pearses staged a late rally to draw with Western Gaels. Clann

na nGael had eight points to spare against Boyle. Game of the weekend in the O’Gara Cup was the clash of Tulsk and Oran with the Tulsk men emerging victorious by two points. High-flying Strokestown were the eight point winners against Castlerea while Elphin won the local derby against Kilmore by four points. The next round of league games will be played without county players in three weeks’ time.
Rossies face Royal challenge The Roscommon senior footballers will complete their preparations for the forthcoming clash with Leitrim in the Connacht SFC Quarter-Final when they face Meath in a challenge
game this Sunday. The challenge match will mark the opening of Masterson Park and will be hosted by St. Vincent’s, Ardcath with a 3 pm throw-in.
Minors set up final date with Galway The great strides being made at underage level in ladies football in the county was further underlined when Roscommon minors had a superb six point win against Mayo, on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-12 in the Connacht Minor ‘A’ semifinal at Ballyleague last Friday night. They now face Galway in the final on May 6th.
With Aimee O’Connor, Ellen Irwin and Kara Earle looking dangerous up front, Roscommon were in change from the opening whistle. Kara Earle scored the only goal of the game after ten minutes and by halftime Roscommon were in control leading by 1-7 to 0-4. Mayo did improve on the resumption but with
Aisling Walshe and Emma Kildea resolute in the Roscommon defence, the Mayo scores were kept to a minimum. Aoife O’Neill was impressive from frees for Mayo but Roscommon’s lead was never really threatened. Manager Ollie Colgan and his selectors must now plan for a Connacht ‘A final.

that the pitch will be laid first and then the dome assembled. The weatherprood dome is operated with generators that will pump air into the huge structure and will be kept inflated at all times. “We are going to concentrate our coaching and
