VOLUME: 633

Roscommon GAA County Board is ready to abandon plans to develop the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence at Runnabracken (Oran) and is instead urgently seeking an alternative site in the Roscommon town area. It is understood that the County

Board and other prospective stakeholders are now actively looking for suitable land in the Roscommon town area with a view to developing the Centre of Excellence there. Roscommon GAA owns the 54-acre site at Runnabracken, Oran. Planning permission which is in place for the project at Runnabracken is due to expire at the end of 2020. At Tuesday night’s County Board meeting delegates discussed two major projects – the development of Dr. Hyde Park and the long-mooted Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence. It is understood that it is now the ‘preferred position’ of the County Board, Roscommon County Council, sponsors, the Connacht Council and all such stakeholders that the project should proceed

in the Roscommon town area. It is considered to be a much more suitable location due to proximity to schools, etc. A Roscommon GAA source said: “All parties are anxious to move forward with a sense of urgency. All efforts will be made now to secure suitable land in the Roscommon area. The GAA owns the Runnabracken land. Runnabracken is no longer the preferred choice but it will be revisited if suitable lands are not sourced. That will be the default position”. When the Centre of Excellence opens, it will be the new HQ of Roscommon GAA. All preparation work for all Roscommon teams will happen there and all development squads will receive their coaching at that location.

e l p o e WATCHING P With PAUL HEALY

So you told the Editor everything…about Castlebar? Yep, he wasn’t happy that we had no column here last week, he was in real ‘Exasperated Editor’ mode. Like in the movies? Yep, like in the movies. Striding up and down to his desk, waving his arms around, complaining that we had let him down, that we hadn’t answered our mobiles, there was no ‘copy’ from the barstool boyos…in fairness, he calmed down quickly enough. Saw the funny side. I had it all written out for him…he likes stuff in writing…it went like this: Dear Editor,

Compulsory Purchase Order I understand that my land will be targeted by the local Council to facilitate a road development in my area. I don’t want to sell my land and I am very distressed about this. Is there anything I can do? Will I be compensated? Please advise me. Certain statutory bodies, to include local authorities, can take land or property without the consent of the owner by means of a compulsory purchase order (CPO). Compulsory purchase only usually takes place to allow a public infrastructure project to go ahead e.g. to facilitate the development of a new road. If your property is compulsorily purchased, you will be eligible for compensation. Such compensation is designed to restore you, as far as possible, to the same position as you were in before your property was acquired. You should be paid compensation based on the market value of your property. The compensation should reflect both the actual land acquired and the reduction in value, if any, of your remaining lands as a result of the CPO. If your property is going to be compulsorily acquired then you will be served with a formal notice advising you of the proposed CPO. You have the right to raise objections and make representations concerning the proposed CPO. However, it is important that you react quickly as strict time limits apply for lodging objections and for any court actions which may be required to challenge the CPO. It is important that you receive detailed legal advice on the options open to you. We at Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors have handled many compulsory purchase cases from the very initial stages right through to full challenges through the Courts. We work with other experienced professionals to include planners, surveyors and valuers so as to best represent your interests. Please feel free to contact us for further advice specific to your own situation. This column is prepared by Dolores Gacquin, Solicitor. Byrne Carolan Cunningham have offices in Athlone, Moate, Lanesborough and Galway. A person should always contact their solicitor to obtain legal advice specific to their own situation. The above column contains general information and cannot be relied upon as legal advice. * In contentious business, a solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement

We can explain…kind of. So, we hit for Castlebar for the Mayo/Roscommon match on that Saturday morning. Hands up, we met up with Pat and Mike, the Dublin buskers, and we had one or two drinks in the early afternoon. There was a great atmosphere. Next thing Pat suggests we go out to MacHale Park to find a good location for busking purposes later that evening. When we got there, the grounds were open. As we were well due a bit of fresh air by that point, we needed no invitation. In we went, and had a good look around. It was like the Colosseum, just as intimidating, when you consider Roscommon’s record there! There was only one groundsman there and he passed no heed on us. We got a bit carried away, scoring imaginary goals. I remember doing a mock commentary, I shouted ‘It’s Cathal Cregg…he leaves his man for dead…he’s bearing in on goal… GOAL!’

Endangered Species The barstool boyos

Next thing dear Mr. Editor, we were at the dressing room doors. Doors open, couldn’t resist. In we went, all four of us. All the Mayo jerseys were in position. All was going fine, then…it happened. The groundsman locked the door, unaware that we were inside.

It was a nightmare. We sent a few discreet texts to friends, but no-one believed us. Next thing it’s nearly 6 o’clock and we hear the Mayo team arriving. We panicked. In the end, we found a cupboard full of old Connacht medals and the four of us squeezed into it. Pat and Mike had the guitar and banjo with them, so I can tell you it was no fun. We could hear the players and James Horan, full of adrenaline, all pumped up. Next thing ‘The Boys from the County Mayo’ was blaring, and what a job we had to stop Pat from joining in. We got away with it. When the Mayo team went out on to the pitch, we seized our moment. We tiptoed out of the dressing room and tried to look as casual as possible. Granted, a Connacht Council official gave us a dirty look, but Pat sang a quick song and that humoured him…at least until we bolted for the terraces. Anyways, Mr. Editor, with Roscommon leading at half-time, we made a quick return to the Mayo dressing room. Not to spy – Pat had left his banjo behind. When Roscommon won, we had a great night. Then we decided to stay on for a day or two to see if ‘Ming’ was going to get re-elected. As you know, the count was in Castlebar…. How did the Editor take that news? Oh, he made some joke about it only being a yellow card offence, but warned me we were to keep up the column and not get into any more scrapes…or any more cupboards. All’s well that ends well…? Yeah, although he did sigh when I told him we’re looking forward to Salthill…

What we liked…

Our Alternative Awards

We liked the fact that we were out (at a table quiz in the Central in Roscommon) when news broke of a devastating ‘5-strong Healy-Rae’ attack on the Late Late Show studios. Seemingly poor Ryan was face to face with FIVE Healy-Raes on Friday night’s show. We’re glad we missed it…

The ‘Thanks for the memories/ Hall of Fame’ Award We enjoyed 2FM’s admittedly selfcongratulatory 40th birthday celebrations. It was particularly nostalgic and moving to hear the voice of Gerry Ryan again. Magic memories!

What we didn’t like…

The ‘No mean political achievement’ Award Roscommon man Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has been re-elected to the European Parliament. ‘Ming’ has his critics, but we’re happy to congratulate the local man on another very impressive electoral success.

Hopkins to push for better pay for members of Defence Forces Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins says she has raised the need for better pay and conditions for members of the Defence Forces with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minister with responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe. Senator Hopkins said that she fully understands why some members of the Defence Forces are frustrated about their pay and conditions. She called for increased pay and improved conditions in order to improve retention within the force and also to attract new recruits. Noting that the Independent Pay Commission is looking into the matter, Senator Hopkins said that following publication of that body’s report in the coming weeks, she wants to see swift action taken. She pledged to “continue” to raise this issue with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minister Kehoe “until we see improved pay and conditions”.

Historical and Archaeological Journal launched  DAN DOONER

There was a good turnout at Áras an Chontae on Tuesday for the launch of the 14th County Roscommon Historical & Archaeological Society Journal by Roscommon County Council Heritage Officer, Nollaig Feeney. The Society’s PRO, Darragh Kelly, acting as MC for the evening, said it was “very encouraging and heartening” to see so many in attendance. Attendees had been treated to music by Ukephoric from Knockcroghery before proceedings got underway. The journal features an extensive colour section and was co-edited by James Hoban and Jim Ganly, with illustrations by Albert Siggins. The President of the County Roscommon Historical & Archaeological Society, Mary O’Connell, compared the journal to a butterfly as it “emerges and appears on bookshelves as the holidays begin”. She said the journal covers a wide range of local historical events as well as investigating the Dominican and Franciscan orders’ presence in the county. She thanked the large number

of contributors who had made the publication possible. Co-Editors James Hoban and Jim Ganly both echoed Mrs. O’Connell in offering their thanks to contributors as well as CEO Eugene Cummins and staff of Roscommon County Council for their continued support of the society and the use of Áras an Chontae for Tuesday’s launch. Quoting Jamaican activist and publisher, Marcus Garvey, Mr. Hoban said he hoped the journal

would encourage people to branch out and take an interest in history. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots,” he said. Roscommon County Council CEO Eugene Cummins said he was delighted to welcome the society to Áras an Chontae adding that he was looking forward to reading the “most extensive” journal to date. “The society is to be com-

mended…we at Roscommon County Council are delighted to host this event as an acknowledgement of all the great work you do,” he said. Officially launching the journal, Roscommon County Council Heritage Officer, Nollaig Feeney, said: “It’s a huge honour to be asked to launch the 14th County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society Journal. The society was one of the first groups I came into contact with here and the

relationship we have built has been extremely helpful and beneficial in my work. “I get a lot of queries from Roscommon and overseas and my first port of call is the Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society,” she said before adding that the county was “very lucky to have such a strong and vibrant society”. The 14th Co. Roscommon Historical & Archaeological Society Journal is available now at bookshops across Co. Roscommon priced at €15.

DBC Athlone – Experts in physiotherapy innovation! Athlone native and chartered physiotherapist, Liam Heavin, established DBC (Dublin Back Clinic) Chartered Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine Clinic in 2001 before opening his first clinic in the 2,500 square foot Ashleaf Centre in South Dublin in 2002. Since then the firm has gone from strength to strength with further clinics established in Naas, the UCD Institute for Sport and Health, and most recently, at Arcadia in Athlone. Liam, who also has a Masters in Sports Science said: “We opened our first clinic in 2002, working predominantly with consultants, neurosurgeons, orthopedic spinal surgeons and the like. “The basic idea is that we have some technology which allows us to really specifically measure the movement of the spine and to see where there is movement loss and where issues stem from, etc. From that we are able to provide very specific assessments of what’s going on with a person’s back or neck problems,” he said. The DBC clinics specialise in exercisebased rehabilitation with treatments applied with a foundation of strong scientific and clinical reasoning. Liam says that this is especially true of the clinic’s back and neck rehabilitation programmes which use medical devices developed in Finland by DBC International. While DBC is established as a celebrated centre of excellence in the provision of back and neck rehabilitation, Liam says

it also provides expert physiotherapy services. “We extended our service to the wider physiotherapy-type services, so shoulders, knees and hips, and developing the same technology for those types of issues as well,” he said. Opening a clinic on campus at UCD has exposed DBC’s team of specialists to many different types of sports and Liam, who is Director of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy at the Belfield clinic, says it has welcomed clients from all over Ireland. “We have had a lot of patients coming up to us from down the country and from all over really. We decided to look at the possibility of a regional centre so that we could make our services available to people without them having to travel the whole way to Dublin. “We opened our 2,500 square foot clinic in the Arcadia Centre in Athlone a little

over a year ago and I’m delighted to say that things are going incredibly well. We have all the spinal rehab of course but on top of that we have a wide range of sports medicine as well as regular physiotherapy alongside it,” he said. The 41-year-old Athlone native, who studied in Finland and saw first-hand the brilliant work being done in the field of neck and spinal rehabilitation, said he is delighted to be able to bring his clinic’s services back home. “I started with DBC International in 2005 and was part of the initial team which offered these services. I left in 2010 to focus on Ireland but I still have a very close relationship with the team at DBC International. It’s nice to be returning with those experiences and to have built a business in Dublin and now to be bringing it back home to Athlone. In fact, I’ve been taken aback by the number of people returning to the region to set up businesses: I’d say about 50% of the guys I grew up with are back in this region and that’s down to the quality of life on offer,” he said. Liam has been buoyed by the opening of a DBC Clinic on his home ground and says the plan is to establish the company’s headquarters in Athlone, which he described as the “perfect location” for a regional clinic. “Business people my age are industrious and creating jobs. We are bringing jobs back to rural Ireland and this needs to be encouraged,” he concluded.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor

paul@roscommonpeople.ie

A great weekend in a great town… If they’re still talking ‘up there’ in Dublin (should it be over there?) about the good times being back, our position remains the same: We haven’t seen much new boom-time in rural Ireland yet. If any tunnel-visioned economist or politician or commentator tries to tell us that the country is flying again, we’ll ‘refer them to our previous answers’ on this subject… which is that things are still pretty tough in these parts. SMEs are up against it, farmers are under pressure, services (unforgivably) are being withdrawn or cut, there is no job creation worth talking about…and don’t start us on that wretched broadband. When I say services are being cut, I mean it. I was passing through a West Roscommon village on Monday and had to double back to check if my eyes were deceiving me or not. Was that (familiar) small landmark family shop really closed? I did a u-turn, and sure enough the shelves were empty and bare. Then I noticed the almost apologetic An Post sign over the door. Family shop and Post Office. That probably explains it. The post office presumably went, and then the shop went with it. Another era ends, another social hub battered into submission, reduced to memories. And yet…I have positivity to report. It was a noteworthy weekend in Roscommon Town. Whatever the fate of some towns and villages, Roscommon Town is going well. That won’t be everyone’s experience (I’m sure it’s hard going for many people), but in a general sense, Roscommon town is going well. What happened over recent days reminds us of the type of positive developments that are underpinning the success story that is Roscommon Town…

Thursday A private, family business showcases its expansion: You have to admire the family-run SMEs – indeed SMEs, family-run or otherwise – that are the heartbeat of the county town. We are blessed with the quality of our shops, restaurants, hotels, etc. On Thursday, it was a pleasure to pop into Timothy’s Londis for the official opening of the beautifully expanded and enhanced store. This is a landmark premises in Roscommon, going back to when the Kiernan family owned in. In latter years the Timothy family (and staff) have made it into a busy and popular store through sheer hard work. The recent ‘facelift’ has been widely and deservedly praised. Last weekend, after all the hard work, it was time to celebrate. Customers, long-standing and new, called in

Sunday

Cian Mulry (bottom left) addressed Fr. John Cullen as ‘Fr. God’ – much to Fr. John’s amusement – at the official opening of Roscommon Gaels’ dressing rooms at Lisnamult on Sunday. Also pictured is club chairperson Teresa Hession. See page 16, and this column. Picture: Michelle Hughes Walsh

to admire the new look and join in the celebrations. Monsignor Charles Travers was present on Thursday to bless the building. It’s great to see this investment in Timothy’s Londis. Well done to Annie, Vincent, family and staff, and continued success in what is a challenging and competitive environment.

Friday Public money this time, which is absolutely fine, in fact, great! There was a large crowd at Roscommon Arts Centre for its official re-opening. The facility, at Circular Road, Roscommon, has received a pretty spectacular facelift. The purse strings were opened by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Roscommon County Council. There were lots of politicians present, most of them still taking in the previous weekend’s results.

Senator Terry Leyden appeared to be mischeviously happy about the recordbreaking speed with which Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael had hatched a Coalition deal on Roscommon Council. He couldn’t stop smiling. Senator Frank Feighan was beaming too, cock-ahoop after Maria Walsh’s stunning Euro elections’ success. Frank was her Director of Elections. They were all there ... Denis Naughten, Michael Fitzmaurice, Eugene Murphy, Maura Hopkins and enough councillors to field a football team. If any snubbed Independents were smarting (because FF and FG marched up the aisle after some speed-dating) they weren’t showing it. Ivan Connaughton made an assured speech in what he said was his last outing as Cathaoirleach. Council CE Eugene Cummins emphasised that a big focus will be placed on reaching out to schools and young people generally to ensure that this great

Word in your ear! Bernie Kearney chats with Senator Terry Leyden at Roscommon Arts Centre on Friday. Also pictured is Mary Claire Grealy. Picture: Brian Farrell

facility is used to its full potential. Averyl Dooher, Dympna Naughton and colleagues were beaming, and so they should. It was a lovely occasion. Minister Josepha Madigan performed the official opening. She then headed off, and we headed upstairs for tasty nibbles/canapes and slightly less tasty political gossip.

Saturday Another opening in Roscommon town, underlining my central point this week…that we have a truly great county town. Do we fully appreciate what a massive asset the racecourse is? I hope we do. Remarkably, the dedicated board there keeps overseeing course enhancements, year after year after year. We have a special report in our sports section this week. I went along on Saturday to see the latest facilities. The board had organised an open day in response to enquiries from people who wanted to see the latest developments at the course. The facilities are magnificent. A beautiful new building has been built. Not only is it extremely practical, it’s visually stunning. It contains a weigh room, medical rooms, media quarters, a new manager’s office, sauna, etc. By all accounts (from the horse’s mouth?), the various stakeholders in the horseracing industry who availed of or viewed the new facilities at the May meeting in Roscommon were all extremely impressed. It is a credit to everyone involved and will ensure that the reputation and popularity of Roscommon Races continues to soar in the years ahead. Roscommon Racecourse, first and foremostly in its own guise as a sporting theatre, but also with its great spin-off benefits for the entire town, is an absolute jewel in Roscommon.

It’s the kids who get the parents involved, I guess. I haven’t put my shoulder to the wheel with Roscommon Gaels yet, but early days… Our son Matthew is enjoying the football and hurling, as are hundreds more local kids. We went along to the Roscommon Gaels’ Family Fun Day on Sunday (held as part of the club’s 60th anniversary celebrations). It was a lovely day of drills, goals, points, smiles, hot dogs and ice creams. There was a formal element, although it was actually pretty informal. Teresa Hession (club chairperson and MC on this occasion) was in inspirational ‘form’, defying a downpour of rain to oversee proceedings with good humour and passion. Passion for GAA. Passion for the Gaels. Passion for the future. Barry Molloy officially opened the club’s new dressing rooms. As ever, this great gentleman spoke with modesty and generosity. Good wishes too from Council CE Eugene Cummins and from Seamus Sweeney (County Board chairperson). Great gaels – great Gaels – stood around, with gaels’ new and eager, the past, present and future intertwining. I liked Teresa’s central message… which was about belonging. Everybody wants to belong. And the Gaels’ chairperson emphasised the value of the GAA, of this club, in helping people to belong. And she is right. It is the great contribution of the GAA, arguably much more important than spectacular feats on the field of play. Teresa also thanked the people of Roscommon for their support of the Gaels, and had a great line on the role of volunteers. “Volunteers aren’t paid…not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless”. Asking Fr. John Cullen to bless the dressing rooms, Teresa quipped about needing a very special prayer. Fr. John: “I’ve been praying for Arsenal for years, and look how that’s turned out!” Another quip from Fr. John then as he revealed that he had been ‘promoted’ by little Cian Mulry, who had endearingly addressed him as ‘Fr. God’! Suddenly, the rain stopped, and the sun came out. As we had a commitment in Dublin and it was now 3.15, we had to leave, hurley and helmet in hand. As we approached the exit, four or five kids were having a kickaround beside a goal-net, not a care in the world, the joy of the GAA and the promise of the future in their young hearts. That – I think – is a great weekend in a great town.

NewsPeople Comhaltas music session in Doorly’s

Death of former Roscommon footballer Former Roscommon footballer John Lynch, who won an All-Ireland Minor title for the county in 1951 before going on to play in the 1962 All-Ireland senior final defeat to Kerry, sadly passed away yesterday following an illness. He was in his mid-80s. He was a successful roofing contractor in Co. Galway and

his brother Colman’s company, Lynch Roofing Systems, sponsored Roscommon GAA in the 1990s. Mr. Lynch, who played at full-back for Roscommon, hailed from Cloontowart, Lisacul and played his club football with Loughglynn, Michael Glavey’s and Tuam Stars.

Roscommon Town Comhaltas Branch will hold its next music session in Doorly’s Pub from 6 pm to 8.15 pm this Sunday (June 9th). All welcome.

ROSCOMMON COUNTY COUNCIL DRAFT CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION STRATEGY 2019 - 2024 Notice is hereby given that Roscommon County Council has prepared a Draft Local Authority Climate Change Adaptation Strategy in accordance with the provisions of The Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015 and the National Adaptation Framework (NAF), 2018. Climate change is recognised as a global challenge with policy responses required in terms of both mitigating the causes of climate change and in adapting to the inevitable consequences of our changing climate. The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy represents a proactive step by Roscommon County Council in the process of adaptation planning to build resilience and respond effectively to the threats posed by climate change. Purpose of the Strategy: The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy takes on the role as the primary instrument at local level to: (i) ensure a proper comprehension of the key risks and vulnerabilities of climate change (ii) bring forward the implementation of climate resilient actions in a planned and proactive manner and, (iii) ensure that climate adaptation considerations are mainstreamed into all plans and policies and integrated into all operations and functions of Roscommon County Council. Environmental Reports: Accompanying the draft Climate Change Adaptation Strategy is: (i) A Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Screening Report in accordance with the SEA Directive (DIR 2001/42/EC) and pursuant to European Communities (Environmental Assessment of Certain Plans and Programmes) Regulations 2004 (SI 435 of 2004 as amended by SI 200 of 2011) and, (ii) An Appropriate Assessment (AA) Screening Report in accordance with the requirements of Article 6(3) of the EU Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC). Display Details: A copy of the Draft Strategy, SEA and AA Screening Reports may be viewed on the Councils’ website: www.roscommoncoco.ie or inspected during the period (4 weeks) from Thursday, 6th June 2019 to Wednesday, 3rd July 2019 (both dates inclusive) during normal business hours at Roscommon County Council, Aras an Chontae, Roscommon. They are also available for inspection at all Council Public Libraries and Athlone, Boyle, Strokestown, Castlerea and Ballaghaderreen Council Offices during normal opening hours.

Interviews being held for extra consultants for Roscommon Hospital The Saolta Hospital Group is in the process of holding interviews for additional consultants at Roscommon Hospital. Deputy Denis Naughten has claimed that the planned investment in consultant staff at the hospital is a direct result of his input into Government formation talks and Budget 2018. One of the positions in question is a new full-time permanent Consultant Physician post with 32 hours per week based at Roscommon County Hospital and a further seven hours per week based at Galway University Hospital, which allows the consultant to access treatment services at all local hospitals. Deputy Naughten said that the important issue now is to secure suitably qualified candidates for the positions. “This has been a challenge across the HSE in recent years, with up to one-third of consultant posts not being filled”. Deputy Naughten said that €750,000 a year will be invested in Roscommon Hospital for the development of services for older people – to stop them being admitted to hospital and allow them to return home quicker – and that this

reality should make the Roscommon position more attractive. Deputy Naughten said that the focus of the new work of the expanded medical team at Roscommon’s Medical Assessment Unit will be on preventing people, particularly older people, from having to be admitted to hospital in the first place and also minimising the length of time people need to spend in hospital. This has already led to the training of 13 doctors in Roscommon Hospital. The Independent TD added: “This is the first significant investment at the Urgent Care Centre in Roscommon Hospital since the A&E closed in 2011 and forms part of a commitment which I secured in the Programme for Government”. Along with the new consultants, local management at Roscommon Hospital are recruiting 15 additional staff including a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech & language therapist, dietician, pharmacist, social worker and specialist nurses who will form a multidisciplinary ‘Frailty Team’ focused on keeping older people out of hospital and out of nursing homes.

The Adaptation Strategy, SEA Screening Report and AA Screening Report may also be viewed on the Government Public Consultations Portal at https://gov.ie/consultations Making a Submission: Submissions or observations may be made: •

Takes ‘straight -talking’ Seamus to task… Dear Editor, In your edition dated 24th of May last, in his ‘Straight Talking’ column, Seamus Duke wrote about the elections which were taking place that week. His column was titled ‘Don’t opt for the copout – get out and vote on Friday’. Seamus is right in advising that people should indeed get out and vote in elections. This is a democratic right that should be cherished. Indeed I believe that we need to be creative and come up with ways of incentivising/making it easier for people to vote, as any trend involving decreased turnout would be very concerning. I do however have to take issue with Seamus on another point he made. I was very taken aback, indeed shocked, to read the following from Seamus: “If ordinary people do not go out and have their say, standards among those whom we elect will slip even further – and God only knows it’s poor enough as it stands”. My question is: To whom is Seamus referring when he speaks of “poor enough” standards? Is he referring to all eighteen outgoing members of the last Council? Is Seamus seriously tarring all eighteen councillors with the same brush? I don’t think it is fair at all for Seamus to generalise in this way. Of course Seamus is entitled to his opinion, but if he thinks the standard of public representation is so poor, why doesn’t he stand for election himself? Maybe Seamus should stand for election and see if he is elected or rejected! Yours sincerely, Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher

STRAIGHT TALKING Happy birthday, 2FM… but tough challenges ahead WITH SEAMUS DUKE

Last Friday was the 40th birthday of 2FM (or RTE Radio 2 as it was known in the early days) and there were many special programmes to celebrate the milestone. In fairness to the national broadcaster, they responded to the young people of the country back in 1979, a generation that wanted a station dedicated to a younger way of thinking and to those who wanted to hear popular music. For the most part, RTE did a great job, especially in those early years. Presenters like Marty Whelan, Jim O’Neill, Jimmy Greeley, Gareth O’Callaghan, Dave Fanning (who is still on the station) and of course Larry Gogan all became instantly recognisable, and then later the likes of Gerry Ryan and Ian Dempsey made their mark. Tony Fenton too, of course. For many hundreds of thousands of people who loved pop music (me included) this new station filled a gap in the market that was certainly there at the time. However, now that the station is 40 years old, they are in a dilemma. While they certainly have retained a ‘younger’ aspect, many of the younger set who like listening to music are tuning in to stations like IRadio, Spin and other dedicated music channels. 2FM is now trying to suit all tastes – and is falling between several stools. However, it did the job it set out to do at the start and it was a major revolution in radio in this country. Of course things move on and the station’s relevance has waned, particularly in the past decade. 2FM’s battle to retain its relevance will be a tough one. There is an ongoing debate about the service that RTE provides. I have to say that for the most part they do a good job. Their news and current affairs service is excellent. There are many very talented

people in RTE with whom I worked over the years; people like Ciaran Mullooly, Fran McNulty, Sinead Hussey, Damien O’Reilly, Declan McBennett, James Healy and Fintan Duffy are all superb at their job. However, there are some exceptions. I find it hard to listen to Marian Finucane every Saturday and Sunday, particularly

Given that RTE collects a hefty sum from the licence fee each year, what it produces will always come under intense public scrutiny – and rightly so

as she is getting paid around €300,000 a year for a broadcasting output of around three and a half hours every week. And invariably with much the same cosy line-up of guests. Ray D’Arcy is another broadcaster who gets paid a fortune. It’s hard to see how such salaries can be justified. On a much more positive note, Morning Ireland, Sean O’Rourke’s programme and Mary Wilson’s show in the evening time are top class programmes that have maintained the high standard of news and current affairs journalism that we traditionally associate with RTE. The coverage of the recent local and European elections on radio and TV was, as usual, top class. In sport, RTE TV is trying to compete with giants like Sky and BT Sport, which can’t be easy. There is always room for improvement and the likes of The Sunday Game and RTE’s GAA coverage in general needs a major shake-up. However, the coverage on radio remains excellent. It’s great to hear new voices on commentary in recent years. There are many more female voices featuring on sports programmes too, which is a welcome development. Given that RTE collects a hefty sum from the licence fee each year, what it produces will always come under intense public scrutiny – and rightly so. There needs to be oversight and reviews carried out constantly – it’s no harm to keep the national broadcaster on its toes. Granted, some of their presenters are grossly over-paid, but I think when most people evaluate their overall service to the Irish people, the majority view probably is that RTE has done a very good job in what is a very competitive market. I think that we need to continue to have a state broadcaster into the future.

Very successful 60th anniversary celebrations for Roscommon Gaels  PAUL HEALY

See also Paul Healy’s Week: Page 10

On a wonderful weekend of 60th anniversary celebrations for Roscommon Gaels GAA Club, last Sunday’s familyoriented gathering at Lisnamult stood out as a striking symbol of all that has been achieved in the past, all that is happening in the present, and all that promises to unfold in the future. Several hundred people were present for a Family Fun Day which featured a number of underage matches, fun activities for kids and the official opening of the club’s dressing rooms. Of course the celebratory weekend had many more highlights. Oliver McGuinness Senior received the Hall of Fame Award on Saturday night, and the inaugural Roscommon Gaels All-Stars event, held on Friday night, was a great success. There were matches for the senior teams too, as the club devoted an entire weekend to celebrating the 60th anniversary of its formation. There was a great atmosphere at Lisnamult on Sunday where

there were matches at U-8, U-10 & U-12 level, with a skills’ display by members of the U-6s’ Academy. The club now has about 800 members of all ages, with 450500 of those currently involved in a playing capacity. On Sunday, the official opening of the club’s new dressing rooms at Lisnamult was

performed by Barry Molloy, a founder member of the Gaels’ back in 1959. Mr. Molloy wished all involved with Roscommon Gaels continued success in the future and said that he was honoured to perform the official opening. The dressing rooms were blessed by Fr. John Cullen (PP, Roscommon) and Very Rev.

Canon Eugene McLoughlin. CE of Roscommon County Council Mr. Eugene Cummins and Mr. Seamus Sweeney, Chairperson, Roscommon GAA County Board both addressed the attendance, complimenting Roscommon Gaels’ on the project and emphasising how important a role the GAA

continues to play in Irish society. Roscommon Gaels’ chairperson Teresa Hession thanked everyone associated with the Lisnamult project and spoke of the ongoing growth of the club. Ms. Hession confirmed that future plans include the provision of a stand, carparking spaces and an astroturf facility.

Already, Roscommon Gaels has two full-sized pitches, three juvenile pitches and a number of training areas at the Lisnamult grounds. The venue is made available to all local schools and currently hosts in excess of one hundred games per year. Ms. Hession thanked Main Contractor Cormac Hoare for doing a fabulous job and also thanked everyone else who had helped in any capacity. Highlighting the key role played by Roscommon Gaels in the community, Ms. Hession thanked the people of Roscommon for their ongoing support. She added that it is also important to appreciate that the Hyde Centre (at Hyde Park) remains a very important part of the Gaels’ set-up, with that centre hosting events virtually ever day of the week. “It remains a very important community hub”, she said. Concluding, the Gaels’ chairperson said that further voluntary assistance would be greatly appreciated, as will fundraising support, as Roscommon Gaels looks to continue to develop its facilities and copperfasten its role in the heart of the community.

POLITICAL PEOPLE

A week is a long time in politics… Reflections on Election ’19  PAUL HEALY

‘Playing senior hurling now’: Deputies Denis Naughten and Eugene Murphy may have had thoughts of a combative General Election campaign on their minds when they met at the Roscommon Gaels Family Fun Day on Sunday! Picture: Michelle Hughes Walsh

Ming marches on…  PAUL HEALY

Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has done it again. That is no mean achievement. In fact it is quite an achievement. If not a remarkable one, certainly a significant one! It is all very well for some people to say this week that Ming was always likely to be re-elected to the European Parliament; many of those people were predicting his downfall only a few weeks ago. Of course I ought not to generalise, but I think many of Ming’s critics are middleaged and older (though I hear many elderly people have a soft spot for him). These anti-Ming folk are traditionalists, most of them having at least at some stage been loyal to Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael, and they are struggling to come to terms with the Ming phenomenon. Personally, I think Ming has, on balance, been a quite effective MEP. You will hear

MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan

people asking what has he achieved, and you will hear people saying we hardly saw him for five years. But we have seen as much of Ming as we have seen of most MEPs! They are, after all, elected to Europe! Ming has retained quite a high media profile over the years and he has certainly retained a big presence on social media. Ming has a particularly big following amongst young people, and much of his campaigning is done on social

media. To get back to my point about his re-election being a significant achievement. It is surely quite an achievement to win a second term in the European Parliament. He is the first Roscommon person to do so, in fact he is the first Roscommon person to ever be elected as an MEP. His first preference vote last week was well down on 2014 (which was always going to be the case), but he still attracted over 85,000 number ones! He finished on over 121,000 votes. Ming is not everyone’s cup of tea, but then what politician is? He is a divisive figure. But there is no doubt that he is now a consummate politician, quite a phenomenon, and no doubt either that – whatever you view of Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, the political force – it is a very significant achievement to have won two terms (to date) as an MEP.

A week on from the local elections, and the reviews are no doubt underway…within parties and within the campaign teams of Independent candidates. Fianna Fáil won six seats in Roscommon, while Fine Gael took just two. Spin is important: Fianna Fáil, not unreasonably, is claiming it had a very good election. Of course others saw it a little bit differently. I was delighted to feature two guest columnists in our extensive election coverage last week. Mairead O’Shea (FF PRO) wrote (correctly) that Fianna Fáil had held on to its six County Council seats, therefore a good election. In contrast, Paul Hickey (who is a Fine Gael activist) made the very reasonable point that while Fianna Fáil indeed had six Council seats when the last Council term ended, they had started out in 2014 with eight, and therefore had lost two seats! Of course he was referring to the fact that Ivan Connaughton and Paddy Kilduff both left Fianna Fáil over the last year or so, both joining the Independent ranks. Whatever way you assess it, it was a good – arguably very good – election for Fianna Fáil in Roscommon. They emerged as the biggest party on the Council by a country mile (six seats to Fine Gael’s two) and with a good vote share. Fine Gael, on the other hand, were dismayed but not particularly surprised at how they fared. Fine Gael ran six candidates. They were hoping they might have an outside chance of four seats, but were fearful it could be as little as two. The latter scenario unfolded. In what we used to call Mid-Roscommon, Fine Gael is still haunted by the A&E debacle of 2011. But their poor showing may not be just down to recent history. Fine Gael didn’t help its chances of winning a seat in Roscommon Municipal District by running just one candidate (Gerry Coffey). Coffey polled a very respectable 800-plus number ones, but he had no traction in the Roscommon urban area. According to tallies, he took a miserable 46 number ones in Roscommon Town. Fine Gael needed to land Seamus Hayden or a similar well-known figure (as a town-based candidate), but they failed to do so. The big story of Election ’19 in Roscommon

was the strong showing of many Independents. The return of Tom Crosby and Tony Waldron had as much to do with astute campaigns and other factors as it did with any Independent surge. Be that as it may, Independents make up half of the new Council, with nine elected. Little wonder that the very experienced Tony Ward aspired (how realistic it was is debatable) to an Independent-led Council. It was not to be. Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael and Cllrs. Tom Crosby and Laurence Fallon moved fast during a hectic 48-hour period post the count. To the great frustration of some Independent councillors, at least some mobile phones were put on silent as a quick Coalition deal was hatched! There are other talking points from Election ’19. Deputy Denis Naughten will have been given some food for thought, given the difficult experience of his close associates, Domnick Connolly and Laurence Fallon. Connolly lost his seat, squeezed by the Waldron factor and the very strong candidature of Marty McDermott, while Cllr. Fallon was hit hard by newly-Independent Ivan Connaughton, though the former will take a fair degree of comfort from his transfer-friendly showing. The election was a bit of a setback for ‘Team Naughten’, but Deputy Naughten remains odds-on to retain his Dáil seat. What will be fascinating to observe is whether or not Denis returns to the Fine Gael fold in the coming years. Senator Maura Hopkins is under pressure to regain a Dáil seat for the party in Roscommon/Galway, a tall order as matters stand. Others are waiting in the wings. The election was disappointing for Sinn Féin, with neither Joe Harney or Seamus O’Brien able to make a breakthrough, despite solid campaigns. However, sitting SF councillor Michael Mulligan achieved an excellent vote – an acknowledgement of his track record on the Council – and was re-elected in some style. Meanwhile, the extremely strong showing of Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice and the relatively strong showing of Cllr. Orla Leyden has rekindled speculation about either or both of them looking to a Dáil run in the future, though it should be said that they’ve generally been hesitant to pursue this route in the past. Nonetheless, sitting Deputy Eugene Murphy, the FF candidate for the next General Election, will be keeping a watching brief. Cllr. John Keogh, also re-elected comfortably, seems certain to maintain his interest in a Dáil bid in the near future.

What time is it? Ministerial time… BREAKING NEWS: The long-established practice of Government Ministers turning up late for engagements is ‘alive and well’ and has survived in a rapidly changing world/the era of new politics, etc. The invite for the official re-opening of Roscommon Arts Centre clearly stated

‘10.30 am’. This being Ireland/ Roscommon, I was aiming to get there by about 11 am. I got delayed, so it was 11.10. Oh well, I thought, the formal proceedings will be in…er… full swing (apologies to all in Fine Gael for using that expression this week), but I will play catch up. In fact, when I

arrived at the beautiful Arts Centre, a large number of guests were standing outside, awaiting the arrival of Minister Josepha Madigan. Having observed how ministers love to ‘make an entrance’ – almost always arriving late for engagements – I lightheartedly mentioned the

minister’s lack of punctuality to a top Fine Gael-er. He tried to fob me off with a weak “I think the invite said 11 am”, which I rejected. You cannot be up to them! Anyways, at 11.35, over one hour later than scheduled, Minister Madigan arrived, amidst rumours of the driver

(allegedly) taking a wrong turn somewhere around Longford! Later, during her speech, she said she must come down the country more often, as she had received a great welcome – it was lovely, she noted, “to see so many people outside the Arts Centre waiting for me”. Oh dear, I give up! – PH

The IFA is holding a public information meeting at 8.30 pm on Friday, June 14th in The Abbey Hotel, Roscommon, in order to update farmers on the €100m Brexit beef fund and to hear views on its distribution. IFA President Joe Healy said a recent meeting of the IFA National Council in Dublin endorsed the National Livestock Committee policy direction that the €100m Brexit Beef Fund should be targeted at beef finishers of prime cattle (steers, heifers and young bulls) and suckler cow farmers. Mr. Healy said: “It is essential that the €100m Brexit beef package is targeted to the farmers who need it most. It must be paid without delay and there must be no strings attached. “This fund was secured after a lot of hard work and lobbying by IFA. It’s for farmers – not for factories, agents or dealers. insist it is paid quickly and directly to farmers”. The IFA President said the allocation and targeting of the €100m to the farmers who need it most is critically important. “It must take account of the farmers who incurred the beef price losses and the income situation,” he said. IFA National Livestock Chairman Angus Woods said it is very clear that the farmers who sold prime finished cattle since last

September and suckler producers are the two groups who were hit the hardest. IFA has already met with EU Commission officials on the details of the €100m package, which he said was essential for winter finishers given the horrendous losses they have taken. Mr. Woods said under no circumstances can Minister Creed allow one cent go to factory-owned cattle or factory feedlot cattle.

Leo will talk to Michael on show funding fall! Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says he will discuss the issue of reduced funding for agricultural shows with Minister Michael Ring. The matter was raised in the Dáil by Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy who said that the funding made available to agricultural shows in 2019 to alleviate financial difficulties due

to adverse weather conditions has decreased by more than €200,000 from last year. Deputy Murphy said: “Financial support of just €600,000 was made available to more than 100 agricultural shows across the country this year, which is a great concern”. The TD said that agricultural

shows are under increasing pressure due to rising insurance costs and other overheads. An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar noted that Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring was responsible for dividing up that particular budget and he pledged to raise the matter with him.

New-look Roscommon Arts Centre officially opened Josepha Madigan TD, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, officially opened the newly-extended and refurbished Roscommon Arts Centre on Friday morning. There was a large crowd present as the new building was unveiled to the public, after almost a year-long programme of work. Funded by Roscommon County Council and part-funded by The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the re-development and extension to the centre includes two new purpose-built spaces (a gallery and a workshop space), an extension to both the foyer and backstage areas, and the re-development of the existing gallery space into two artist studios, while making the building fully accessible to people with disabilities for the first time. Minister Madigan paid tribute to all assocaited with the project. Addressing guests on Friday morning, the Minister said: “The Department recognises the importance that regional venues such as Roscommon Arts Centre make locally and the capital investment made in this project by the Department reflects this. The new extension to Roscommon Arts Centre addresses all the accessibility issues that existed with the original gallery and workshop spaces and improves the overall visitor experience”. Acknowledging the ongoing support which Roscommon Arts Centre receives from Roscommon County Council, the Minister continued: “As demonstrated by this re-development, there is a strong commitment from both the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Roscommon County Council to support the continued development of the arts infrastructure at a local level”. She went on to say: “This purpose-built gallery and workshop space, together with the new artist studios, also clearly demonstrates the commitment that exists within Roscommon County Council to supporting artists – there are now more spaces than ever locally in which artists can develop and present work and I look forward to watching how this develops in the future”. Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council Eugene Cummins, who also spoke at Friday’s event, said: “The extension marks the beginning of an exciting new era at Roscommon Arts Centre. I know for many years, there have been calls for a better gallery space in Roscommon and I am delighted that we have finally delivered on this”. He continued: “This building is for the people of Roscommon and I hope that whether they be young or old; performer, participant or audience member, they enjoy their visit here and are proud to call Roscommon Arts Centre their own”.

Gatehouse set for album launch Since the release of their critically acclaimed solo album ‘Tus Nua’ in 2016, Roscommon based traditional band Gatehouse has gone from strength to strength. Receiving a 5 star review from The Irish Times, the album was described as ‘an unerring gem’. On this, their second record, ‘Heather Down The Moor’, they have presented more intricate arrangements and augmented their attention to detail whilst supplementing their core sound with additional instruments, layers and colours all guided by the hand of co-producer Donal O’Connor. Band members John and Jacinta McEvoy, Rachel Garvey and John Wynne are steeped in traditional music and it’s no surprise that they

are sought after to teach and mentor younger musicians at various summer schools all over the country. This new album features new tune compositions from the band’s fiddler John McEvoy which were created especially for this record. Gatehouse have also assembled some of Ireland’s finest musicians to perform on this album including John Joe Kelly, Alan Kelly, Michael McCague and Conor and Paddy McEvoy. WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION The giving of the Spirit to the new people of God crowns the mighty acts of the Father in salvation history. The Jewish feast of Pentecost called all devout Jews to Jerusalem to celebrate their birth as God’s chosen people in the covenant Law given to Moses at Sinai (see Leviticus 23:15–21; Deuteronomy 16:9–11). In today’s First Reading the mysteries prefigured in that feast are fulfilled in the pouring out of the Spirit on Mary and the Apostles (see Acts 1:14). The Spirit seals the new law and new covenant brought by Jesus, written not on stone tablets but on the hearts of believers, as the prophets promised (see 2 Corinthians 3:2–8; Romans 8:2). The Spirit is revealed as the life-giving breath of the Father, the Wisdom by which He made all things, as we sing in today’s Psalm. In the beginning, the Spirit came as a “mighty wind” sweeping over the face of the earth (see Genesis 1:2). And in the new creation of Pentecost, the Spirit again comes as “a strong, driving wind” to renew the face of the earth. As God fashioned the first man out of dust and filled him with His Spirit (see Genesis 2:7), in today’s Gospel we see the New Adam become a life-giving Spirit, breathing new life into the Apostles (see 1 Corinthians 15:45, 47). Like a river of living water, for all ages He will pour out His Spirit on His body, the Church, as we hear in today’s Epistle (see also John 7:37–39). We receive that Spirit in the sacraments, being made a “new creation” in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15). Drinking of the one Spirit in the Eucharist (see 1 Corinthians 10:4), we are the first fruits of a new humanity – fashioned from out of every nation under heaven, with no distinctions of wealth or language or race, a people born of the Spirit. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www. salvationhistory.com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

FRANK

FRANK BRANDON’S

unique take on life ...

‘Pool earn their Spurs – and Katie rules the world It’s Saturday evening, and I have decided to break with a long-standing tradition, and despite it being a bank holiday weekend I have made up my mind that I am not going to visit any pub, but am instead going to have a quiet night watching sport on the telly. Now with the Champions League final taking place, and with the massive support Liverpool have all over the country, I knew that the craic and the atmosphere in pubs everywhere would be brilliant, but once my decision was made there was no going back – and so I settled down and thoroughly enjoyed my peaceful evening. I missed the first twenty minutes or so of the Champions League game, and with apologies to supporters of both clubs (Spurs and Liverpool), I was sorry I didn’t miss it all, as in my opinion it was an awful game, with none of the good football that brought the two clubs as far as the final! However, as anyone will tell you, it’s all about winning, and the ‘Pool took the honours – and in the process confirmed their status as the most successful English club ever in Europe. The local members of the Liverpool Supporters Club that I met last night (Sunday) were understandably delighted with their victory, and in truth they couldn’t care less how the win was achieved. In my totally unimportant opinion, the referee was wrong with the penalty decision, but things like that always happen in football, and nothing can change the end result…so congratulations to Jurgen Klopp and his men. The unpalatable truth for those of us who follow other clubs in the Premier League is that Liverpool have now assembled a really good side, and, along with Man. City, are streets ahead of all the rest. It looks like a barren few – maybe a good few – years ahead for us poor folk who follow Man Utd. At least this year we know it in advance! Anyway, I had a few hours to kill before my next big sporting event of the night, so I watched yet another semi-final (the fifth of the week) of Britain’s Got Talent, and then I set my clock for half past one and headed off for a couple of hours’ sleep before rising again to watch Katie Taylor’s world unification fight against Belgium’s Delfine Persoon. Now there are lots of experts out there who claim the Belgian police-

Katie Taylor

woman should have got the verdict – and maybe they are right – but the people that matter are the judges, and they gave it to the Bray woman. Leaving the result aside, the fight itself was one of the toughest, most physical, and compellingly brutal that I have ever seen. It was 10 rounds of unrelenting aggression, and it was undoubtedly a result that could have gone either way (the draw might have been about right). One way or another, Katie dug in and ground out a victory, and in my opinion in that battle she copperfastened her position as one of our greatest ever sports persons. The punters who paid in to see the two best female lightweight boxers on the planet gave them a standing ovation at the end of a gruelling contest. I have to say I was absolutely buzzing with the ferocity of it all. No doubt about it, Katie has put women’s boxing right out there, and she deserves every reward – sporting and financial – that comes her way. My plan was to retire for the night at that stage, and as it was now almost 3 am it would have been well time to do so, but I was on such a high that sleep just wouldn’t come, and so I stayed up to watch the Anthony Joshua heavyweight championship bout, a fight that the affable Englishman was expected to win in a canter. AJ (that’s how he is known) was twenty to one on (that

means you had to put 20 on to win 1), but in what was a remarkable bout he was to lose on a technical knock-out to a Mexican fighter called Andy Ruiz Jnr, who produced the performance of a lifetime to knock Joshua down four times before eventually finishing him off in the seventh. Two things stood out for me about this fight, the first being the complete graciousness with which AJ took his defeat, the second being the unusual physical condition that the winner seemed to be in. In an age where all sportsmen, but particularly boxers, look as if they have been sculpted – and often have more six-packs than you would see in a busy off-license on a bank holiday weekend – it was heartening to see an athlete who looked as if he had trained on a diet of burgers and chips, and who might have been more suited to an ad for Supermac’s than for a world heavyweight championship fight. However, in this case at least, looks were totally deceiving and the Mexican underdog proved to be a very good boxer and a most deserving winner. I think both fights will result in rematches, and I may well have another long, late night watching the next instalment in what could end up being a longrunning saga. For the moment however, despite Persoon claiming she is about to lodge an objection against the re-

sult, let’s all rejoice at the achievements of the extraordinary Katie Taylor. No matter what lies in her future, for a decade or more she has been a shining light in Irish sport, a role model for all women, and a genuine world superstar. Well done Katie, we’re so proud of you.

And finally… Finally for this week, while we were away on holidays the racing world was shocked by the sudden retirement of champion jockey, Ruby Walsh, who announced he was quitting with immediate effect after winning the Punchestown Gold Cup (on Kemboy) for trainer Willie Mullins. The good news is that the former Personality of the Year out here in Creggs, Tom Connolly – even though he’s pushing on a bit now, having recently celebrated his 60th birthday – has decided he’s the man to fill the void created by Walsh’s retirement. Under the watchful eye of Mags Keane, Tom has gone into training, and was recently seen trotting around the village (on a horse). It may take a bit of time, but it is my prediction that Tom will be riding winners before too long. Watch this space.

Till next week, Bye for now!

At the time of writing, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, pictured right, was pledging he’d get around to visiting the communities affected by the recent cold-blooded killings in Kilmore West and Darndale in North Dublin, “as soon as I can find a little time”. Wow! Perhaps you’ll fit them in when you’re done quizzing Maria Bailey over her regrettable ‘swing-gate’ debacle? Then again, maybe you’ll ‘find a little time’ in between writing gushing fan-boy letters to Kylie? Or, is it possible you’ll pencil them in around those impromptu busking sessions you love so much? As someone who grew up in Kilmore West, (coincidentally on Kilbarron Drive, the road directly behind Kilbarron Avenue, home of one murder victim and crime scene of another), I personally find Leo’s attitude insulting. Then again, there’s a chance it’s not Leo’s fault. You see, it’s possible our posh-boy leader is, (like many I’ve spoken to over the past week), of the opinion that, due to the escalation of serious crime in this area, the community probably aren’t all that worthy of a State visit. I mean, how many of them are even likely to, ‘get up early in the morning’. Now readers, if this is the general consensus, then I believe it’s a clear

indication of how our everyday language and news reporting styles, both in print and in broadcast media, (and social media), have disgracefully contributed to the way in which we perceive some areas of our country. Don’t believe me? Remember how Roscommon was scandalously belittled for being ‘the only county to vote against same-sex marriage,’ leading to us being unfairly scrutinised by the eyes of the world during the Abortion Referendum, to see which way we’d swing! (Ooops sorry Maria, there’s that word again). I’ll tell you folks, there were many times over the past months, when, having been asked how I could… and I quote, “live down in that backward hole,” (I stress again, not my words), I found myself robustly defending this county, often engaging in many a boisterous verbal exchange; using words unbecoming of a lady. I’m not a person who’s confrontational by nature, (no, seriously I’m not), but I will not stand by while ignorant halfwits demean this fine county, categorising us, (yes, I’m one of ya now), as being unsophisticated. And that dear readers, is just my example of how certain language can have the ability to taint and dehumanise all that is good

about our thriving Roscommon; and indeed other decent areas. And so it’s the same for Kilmore West. You see, I have friends living there. Decent hard-working friends who’re not just raising families and contributing positively to society, they’re also friends who’re not ‘known to Gardaí’. However, due to certain perceptions and commentary surrounding the latest spate of frighteningly brazen murders, these friends, because of their location, are now being labelled as ‘disadvantaged,’ and ‘socially deprived’ – and that’s discriminatory. Violent crime, or, as we call it, ‘organised crime,’ and murder is not an

acceptable activity in Kilmore West, no more than it is acceptable anywhere else in Ireland. In addition, by society placing the highly provocative label ‘the Gucci Gang’ on these cancerous pieces of scum, we’ve managed to make them sexy! After all, despite having no visible means of income, these gang members flamboyantly flaunt their wealth, drive flash motors, and wear designer jewellery as they pump bullets into their victims without fear of punishment. Sure is it any wonder that some naïve individuals view this lifestyle as being profitable. And, what’s worse, by Leo being so indifferent and so dismissive of the urgent need for his government to show solidarity and address the seriousness of the situation, such is the visceral nature of organised crime, we can be sure, vulnerable school-going kids, (already de-humanised as being ‘socially deprived’), will find themselves becoming the unwitting vessels of coercion and control. If someone doesn’t do something soon, sadly, to the detriment of us all, the infighting will intensify, the cartels will implode, the violence will escalate across this entire country and the carnage will continue. Leo, it’s time to grow a set, love!

We’ve still got it girls… and somebody wants it! It appears Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden’s risqué fashion choices were seen as so contentious, they not only overshadowed the contestants, they also generated a flurry of complaints to Ofcom! And, even though I’m not a fan of a show that has, in my opinion, never once produced an entertainer who has managed to grip my attention, (apart from finalist Victoria Wood knock-off singer/songwriter Siobhan Phillips), I did tune in to see what all the begrudgers were moaning about. I mean what is it with the great British public and their enhanced curiosity when it comes to Amanda Holden and what they view as her distracting side boob, under boob and every other body part she decides to put on display?

Look ladies, just because we reach a certain age, it does not mean we should be judged and dissected under a microscope by small-minded covetous aul curtain twitchers whose only objective is to rip us apart. Nor does it mean we should suddenly stop wearing skinny jeans, sky-scraping heels and leave our hot sexy selves behind! And, even though that bloke at the petrol station called you madam this morning, (hate dat), remember, he wouldn’t stand a chance with you anyway, so brush it off, ‘cos your head turning days are not yet over. You see, just because where once there was flawless skin there now spurts an array of pores so deep they’re expanding like crop circles across your face,

the fact is, we’ve all still got it, sisters! However, here’s my little tip: In order to get that same I’m-not-wearing-anyfoundation look you used to effortlessly rock in your 30s by, ahem, well, not wearing any foundation, slather on the primer then add a layer or three of tinted moisturiser…job done. Yes ladies, there may be a few crow’s feet, and it’s true, we may be mortifyingly aware of every droopy body part and every grey hair, but don’t fret. Just take my advice, and, this week, when you go shopping for clothes, do yourself a favour and, instead of opting for function, opt for fashion, because the blush has not yet fallen off that rose; Mamma’s still got it, and believe me girls, somebody out there wants it.

In case you forgot (!), Father’s Day, which usually falls on the third Sunday of June, (this year that’s Sunday 16th), is now upon us. Therefore, if you’re looking for inspiration regarding ways in which you could honour he-who-hasbeen-a-special-guidinglight-in-our-lives, but find you’re coming up with nothing, don’t fret. So, this year, throw out the old man’s well-worn onesie and introduce dad to Roscommon’s latest range of luxury loungewear. Trust us, if daddy plans to spend this Father’s Day relaxing in front of the telly, isn’t it best for everyone that he doesn’t do it in his stretchy t-shirt, boxers and smelly socks. After all, daddy does need to look respectable when he opens the door to your mates! Outdoor dining: Gentlemen, choose your weapons…it’s time to grill! dining, (relax, the weather will pick up), then why not give him the tools of his trade. We’re sure he’d love some sauces, marinades, rubs, spices and dips. However, the old grill sergeant will definitely keep you in his will if you get him tongs, thermometers, a knife sharpener, an apron and a new cook book to help him whip up his own unique ‘signature dad’

feast at your next family barbie! For the dad who says, ‘sure I don’t need anything,’ why not get him a gift voucher for his favourite book shop, or for a round of golf. Then again, if he loves his gadgets, why not consider a gift he’d never get for himself…a luxurious smartwatch! If dad loves his face furniture, but mam hates

the way he gets his food caught in it, grab him a beard grooming kit. To get the big boss started, give him a voucher for his local barber shop and let the professionals school him in the use of beard oil, balm, wax, trimmers, and any other hacks he’ll need to know to help keep those unruly whiskers in shape. We’re sure mam will thank you for turning your dishevelled dad into

a sexy dapper dude! If dad’s heading off on holidays this summer, why not give the man who often sacrifices style for practicality and durability, a trendy cabin bag. As a surprise, pack it full of useful holiday goodies such as a portable phone charger, Bluetooth headphones, a travel pillow and his favourite author’s latest novel to read by the pool! Advertorial

Hurleys! Last Saturday, it was all about horse racing and hurling in Roscommon as the Roscommon Racecourse CLG showcased their brand new, state-of-theart facilities to the public and the county’s hurlers laid down a marker against Christy Ring Cup rivals Meath in Athleague. Paul Healy and Mick McCormack paid a visit to Lenebane to chat to members of the racing

committee ahead of the course’s two-day June meeting next Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, Seamus Duke was in Athleague where Ciaran Comerford’s hurlers were competitive against Christy Ring favourites Meath. Roscommon will now look forward to Saturday’s Christy Ring Cup SemiFinal against Down with confidence.

County’s students take part in basketball finals THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner

Aughrim NS were the winners of the recent two teacher school final.

Dangan NS were the winners of the the 3rd and 4th class final.

The Roscommon Primary School Basketball County Finals were held in The Hub, Castlerea recently. Since January, school teams the from the length and breadth of Roscommon participated in ten blitz days. Table-toppers in each group faced off in semi-finals before 107 teams were whittled down to just ten Ruth Kelly and Erica Feely, primary school teachers who set up this league last year, were thrilled with the progress this year and were delighted to give the county’s primary school children an opportunity to play basketball, some for the very first time. The five finals took place at The Hub recently with Aughrim NS beating Drumboylan NS in the mixed two-teacher final to take basketball league honours for the first time. In the 3rd/4th class boys’ final, Dangan NS also took their first honours, beating Croghan NS. Meanwhile, the girls’ 3rd/4th class honours went to Scoil na nAingeal Naofa, Boyle following their win over Whitehall NS. The 5th/6th class girls’ final was also won by Scoil na nAingeal Naofa, Boyle, who proved just too strong for Roxboro NS, winning a nail-biting finale by just one point. The 5th/6th class boys’ final was a highscoring encounter between Dangan NS and St. Paul’s, Castlerea. The Kilmore school eventually overcame a slightly understrength Castlerea outfit.

Scoil na nAingeal Naofa won the girls’ 3rd and 4th class final.

Scoil na nAingeal Naofa won the girls’ 5th and 6th class final.

Dangan NS won the boys’ 5th and 6th class final.

Handball Community Games The star of the show from a Roscommon point of view at the Community Games National Finals in Limerick was Eoghan Carthy who won silver in the Boys’ U-13 grade. Eoghan beat Joshua Roche from Co. Wexford in the quarter-finals, and Paddy O’Reilly from Co. Limerick in the semifinals before showing tremendous courage in a narrow 15-17 defeat to Kilkenny’s Anthony Clifford in the final. Carragh Kennedy was among the favour-

ites in the Girls’ U-16 grade after her U-15 All-Ireland win in the 40x20 and she easily accounted for Abigail Lenihan of Co. Limerick in the semi-finals. However, she met her match in the final in Carlow’s Farrah Ryan, going down 17-15. Carragh’s younger sister Shona took bronze in the Girls’ U-13 event. She hit 25 aces in 15 minutes to beat Cavan’s Mia Lynch in the quarter-finals but was defeated by Tipperary’s Lucy Gold in the semi-final. Gold went on to win gold in the final. Carragh, meanwhile, overcame Wexford’s Caitlin Gaffney in the third place play-off. Philip Halliday had the misfortune to be drawn against Galway’s world champion Mikey Kelly in the first round of the Boys’ U-16 event. Mikey eventually pulled away from Philip and went on the win the title at a canter.

Seamus Duke ON SPORT

Katie’s victory is tainted by decision The achievement of Katie Taylor in becoming the undisputed world champion at lightweight level is huge and the Bray woman is an example to everyone involved in sport - both women and men - as to what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and sheer determination. However, her victory at Madison Square Garden last weekend is tainted by the injustice of the fight verdict. I am certainly no boxing expert but I watched the fight on Monday in the company of a lifelong boxing fan who said to me afterwards that there was no way

Minor Championship hard to call! The Connacht Minor (U-17) football championship has had some amount of twists and turns this year. Only Leitrim are out of contention now with all the other four in with a chance. The final two games will decide who qualifies for the final and who will go into the play-off. Mayo were looking good until they ran into Sligo last week but Sligo themselves have been beaten (narrowly) by Galway. Roscommon beat Galway and Leitrim but were hammered by Mayo. The Roscommon v Sligo game will be a huge one for Emmett Durney and his team. They have a few weeks to prepare now but the competition shows once again that it is impossible to predict what will happen at this level of football.

that Katie Taylor had won on the balance of the action. Her Belgian opponent, Delfine Persoon, had started slowly and if the fight were judged at the halfway mark then Taylor would have won, but Persoon came very strong in the second half of the fight and she was totally dominant in the last three rounds in particular. I know that Taylor didn’t judge the fight and it’s not her fault, but this was a serious injustice. It’s something that happens in professional boxing all the time and at the end of the day it’s all about money. The

comments of Katie Taylor’s manager Brian Peters after the fight say all you need to know. Ruling out an immediate re-match with Persoon, Peters said: “We have our own plans which will involve fighting in New York again. Unfortunately, Belgians wouldn’t sell too many tickets in New York. So we will be looking at someone local”. Selling tickets and pay-per-view… that’s what it’s all about. Katie Taylor’s place as a modern Irish sporting superstar is certainly not in question but it’s a pity that it had to happen the way that it did.

Katie Taylor became the undisputed woman’s lightweight champion of the world following a controversial points decision against Belgian Delfine Persoon in Madison Square Garden last Sunday morning.

Grudging admirer of Klopp’s Liverpool Through gritted teeth I will congratulate Liverpool on winning the Champions League. After the season they had, they deserved to get something out of it. However, this particular Liverpool team and Jurgen Klopp will only be counted as a really great team when they win the Premier League. They have the team to do it, but Manchester City will be there again next season just as strong as ever.

The final itself was a very poor game but that won’t bother Liverpool one little bit. Finals are all about winning. They did the heavy lifting earlier in the competition. Fans of Manchester United can only look on in admiration at what Liverpool have done under Klopp. Now The ‘Pool will be a very attractive club for some of the top players in the world and they will be able to

make their squad even stronger. Why would a top class player want to go to Old Trafford for Thursday night football in the Europa League when they can be guaranteed to qualify for the Champions League and compete for the Premier League title at Anfield? It’s going to be a long, long road back for United as they watch Liverpool go from strength to strength.

Rossies won’t mind lack of media attention The fall-out since Roscommon’s win against Mayo in the Connacht SFC semi-final has been very interesting. Hardly any credit or attention has been given to Roscommon or their performance. It has all been about Mayo and how they might cope after the loss. The general consensus (following the initial shock at the result) is that Mayo are still the only team that will trouble the Dubs and that maybe a trip through the qualifiers will be the best thing that ever happened to them! Unbelievable stuff, to be honest and in a lot of cases just lazy journalism. It’s probably just as well that there is very little about Roscommon so that they can prepare quietly for the Connacht final against Galway. Come to think about it there hasn’t been too much about Galway either. It could happen that it is the best provincial final of the year! I want to mention Eamonn Sweeney’s article on the back of the sports section in the Irish Independent last Sunday, however, in which he praised the Roscommon and Longford GAA teams. A superbly written article and it captured the mood in both counties to a tee. A bit of balance in the national media for once. Well done sir!

Jurgen Klopp pictured enjoying the celebrations following Liverpool’s Champions League Final win over Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday in Madrid.

Mick’s Boys in Green back in action It’s very hard to drum up any enthusiasm about Ireland’s forthcoming matches against Gibraltar and Denmark in the Euro 2020 qualifiers. If we could win both it would put Ireland in a great position on the table. It would be nice to qualify for the finals given there are a number of games being played in Dublin.

The Republic of Ireland will be hoping to avoid a repeat of their last meeting with Denmark in this Friday’s Euro 2020 qualifier.

Hurlers’ heroics are heartwarming! Having spent a lifetime covering Roscommon hurlers I have seen the highs of operating in Division Two of the league when the likes of Antrim, Dublin, Westmeath and Carlow were regular visitors to Athleague, down to the situation in recent years when Roscommon struggled against teams like Donegal, Mayo and Tyrone. But it is heart-warming to see the transformation in their fortunes this year. I fully realise that they have won nothing yet but their displays against Kildare, London and Meath have been excellent and Ciaran Comerford and his management team have instilled a newfound confidence into the squad. I know that the players themselves have worked hard and they are reaping the rewards. This Saturday they face Down in the Christy Ring Cup semi-final. Regardless of the result they have made great progress this year and have laid down a marker for further progress in the years to come.

Poor hurling championship so far… I’m almost afraid to say it but the hurling championship this year has not been a patch on what we saw last year. I suppose that it was too much to hope for that the thrills and spills we saw in 2018 would be repeated. I sat down and watched both games last Sunday in the Munster championship and there were two very one-sided matches. Tipperary and Limerick do look very strong, however, and maybe when they meet we will have a great game. In fairness the much-maligned football championship has thrown up several very good games so far: Down v Armagh, Cavan v Monaghan, Roscommon v Mayo, Longford v Kildare (drawn game) and Cavan v Armagh have all provided excellent entertainment. Is the tide turning? It’s probably too early to say.

The revival in the fortunes of the Roscommon senior hurling team this year was plain for all to see in Athleague last Saturday as Ciaran Comerford’s men put a highly-rated Meath side to the pin of their collective collars in this highly competitive round three game that would decide who would have home advantage for the semi-finals. In the end there were just four points between the teams and if Lady Luck had decided to smile on the home side they could have scored two goals in the first half. Yes, it was a defeat, but the most important aspect of this game is that the Royals will hold no fears for Roscommon if the sides meet again later in the championship. That’s a measure of where this Roscommon have risen to this year. It was a perfect day for a match in Athleague, warm and calm, and it was Meath who looked that little bit sharper in the opening quarter. By the 21st minute they led by 0-7 to 0-3 with Jack Regan and Barry Slevin looking dangerous in attack. Roscommon’s only points at that stage had came from Padraig Kelly and two Cathal Dolan frees.

In the 17th minute Cillian Egan was in on goal but Shane McGann made a great save and in the 26th minute McGann was called into action again as Shane Curley’s shot was batted away by the Meath custodian in spectacular fashion. But Roscommon were never out of contention and by half-time the margin was just a point (0-10 to 0-9). Padraig Kelly scored a couple of super points from play while Cathal Dolan was unerring from frees as usual. Meath sent the very talented Damien Healy to fullforward for the second half and he caused the Roscommon defence a lot of problems with his ability to win the ball. By the 50th minute Meath led by 0-15 to 0-11 with Jack Regan top class from the placed ball. But Roscommon were playing well all over the park and the visitors could not shake off a very determined home side. Eamon Flanagan lofted over a free from all of 90 yards in the 52nd minute and the home side were always able to get vital points to stay in touch and with ten minutes to go the gap was down to two (0-17 to 0-15). Three points without reply in four minutes were crucial for Meath as they led by five with five minutes

left. But there was another kick in Roscommon. Cillian Egan, Conor Mulry and Naos Connaughton all pointed from play and with two minutes to go the margin was just two once again. But Meath came with one last major effort that yielded points from Jack Regan (2) and Barry Slevin and Roscommon had run out of time to effect another comeback. However, there is plenty for the home side to be positive about after this display and the team and management now know that they are more than capable of competing at this level. The full-back line competed well all through and Pat Nolan in particular had a great game while Eamon

Flanagan and Shane Curley did well in the half-back line. Padraig Kelly was outstanding again and is a superb leader of the attack while Cathal Dolan’s free taking was top class. For Meath, Cathal McCabe, Damien Healy, Barry Slevin and Jack Regan were outstanding. After the match, Roscommon manager Ciaran Comerford couldn’t help feel a little disappointed. “We definitely left scores out there. We had twelve wides and we missed a few frees as well. We could have got over the line there today, but we are still into a semifinal and looking forward to that. “We are competing well

now and putting up decent scores too. If any of these teams come and beat us they will have earned it that’s for sure. The difference this year is down to the players themselves. The work they have put in this year is phenomenal. They are a tight bunch too and they are willing to do anything for each other and that’s really important. “After today we would not be afraid of meeting Meath again if that’s how it pans out. Over the last few years there would have been a fear of meeting Meath in Roscommon but not anymore thankfully. But the improvement in our play is down to the players and no one else,” he concluded.

Hurlers at full strength for Down

Offaly v London in Tullamore at 1 pm Having given Meath such a fright, Offaly should be comfortable here if they can re-produce that form. Prediction: Offaly

Leitrim v Wicklow in Carrick-on-Shannon at 3 pm Leitrim were very disappointed with their heavy loss against Roscommon but they can get their season going again here against John Evans’ Wicklow. Prediction: Leitrim

Wexford v Derry in Wexford Park at 4.45 pm A very long trip for Derry but it should be a fruitful one against a Wexford team who have slipped down the rankings badly in recent years. Prediction: Derry

Louth v Antrim in Drogheda at 7 pm Not a match to set the pulses racing. Home advantage is probably the best pointer. Prediction: Louth

Sunday, June 9th Down v Tipperary in Newry at 2 pm These two teams look well matched. Tipperary were very poor against Limerick but at their best are a match for most teams. Down were unlucky against Armagh. A hesitant vote for Down. Prediction: Down

Monaghan v Fermanagh in Clones 2 pm The game of the round for sure. Fermanagh will be very hard to beat but if Monaghan have anything about them they should scrape through a boring and low scoring battle. Prediction: Monaghan

Carlow v Longford in Carlow at 3 pm Both sides will fancy their chances here. It might take extra-time to separate them.. Prediction: Longford

Westmeath v Waterford in Mullingar at 3 pm The Lake County were very disappointed to lose to Laois two weeks ago and have plenty of good players. They should have far too much for Waterford. Prediction: Westmeath

Munster SHC Cork v Waterford on Saturday at Pairc Ui Caoimh at 7 pm Waterford are in disarray and are already out of the championship. Prediction: Cork

Christy Ring Cup Semi-Final: Roscommon v Down in Iniskeen (Co. Monaghan) on Saturday at 3 pm  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon hurlers face the long trip to Patrick Kavanagh country on Saturday to take on Down in the Christy Ring Cup semi-final (throw-in at 3 pm). A year ago Roscommon would not have been looking forward to this game but such has been the transformation in the fortunes of the team, a win is a distinct possibility and it will not be a shock if Ciaran Comerford’s men qualify for the final. Put simply: if Roscommon play to the standard that we have seen so far this year it will take a very good team to beat them. Ciaran Comerford was looking forward to the semi-final when he spoke to People Sport on Tuesday. “We will have everyone available after last weekend. We have no additional injuries so we will have everyone fit and ready for selection. “Down are a good side with a few excellent hurlers and the Sands brothers are in good form so it will be a very competitive game. But we have been playing well and it

will take a very good team to beat us at this stage. Our lads have worked very hard this year and we will be giving it everything. It’s a pity that the venue is not more central but it is an excellent pitch in Iniskeen and we are looking forward to the game,” he said. Down are a formidable side and last weekend they demolished Donegal, scoring 7-22 in the process, with brothers Daithi (3-3) and Eoghan (3-2) Sands both scoring hattricks. They will have to be watched closely by the Roscommon defence. But Roscommon have plenty of good players too. Padraig Kelly is an excellent leader in attack with Cathal Dolan in marvellous form from the placed ball. Further back Shane Curley, Pat Nolan, Hugh Rooney and Eamon Flanagan have all been playing well. The bookies’ odds slightly favour Down but I for one will not be one bit surprised if Roscommon are not preparing for a Croke Park appearance come 5 pm on Saturday evening. It would a great achievement and one that is certainly not beyond them. Prediction: Roscommon

BREAKING BALL U-14 Ladies ease past Fermanagh The Roscommon U-14 Ladies enjoyed a comprehensive 7-15 to 0-9 All-Ireland Silver Championship quarter-final

win over Fermanagh at the Longford Slashers GAA grounds last Saturday. The Rossies had some

excellent team performances and cantered to victory and will now face Limerick in the semi-finals in a fortnight’s time.

Friday, June 7th AFL Division Four At Strokestown: Strokestown v St. Faithleach’s. 8 pm

Saturday, June 8th

Leinster SHC Wexford v Carlow on Saturday in Wexford at 7 pm Davy Fitzgerald’s men will be far too strong. Prediction: Wexford

Kilkenny v Galway on Sunday in Nowlan Park at 2 pm

Ulster SFC Semi-Finals Tyrone v Donegal on Saturday in Cavan at 5 pm It’s hard to choose between the two. Michael Murphy and Paddy McBrearty will have to be in top form if Donegal are to win. I have a slight preference for Tyrone who look stronger. Prediction: Tyrone

Cavan v Armagh (Replay) in Clones at 3 pm Last week we predicted that it might take extra-time to separate them but that was not even good enough. A total lottery here. Maybe Armagh might just shade it this time. Prediction: Armagh

Leinster SFC Semi-Finals on Sunday in Croke Park Meath v Laois at 2 pm Meath were lucky to have survived an Offaly test while Laois were surprise winners against Westmeath. This may be much closer than a lot of people think. Prediction: Meath

Dublin v Kildare at 4 pm Kildare can make all the noises they like but the fact is that they struggled to beat Longford while Dublin were 23 point winners against Louth. If the Lilywhites keep the margin below ten they will have done well. Prediction: Dublin

Limerick put the train back on the tracks last Sunday in no uncertain fashion. Clare were very disappointing against Tipperary. The champions are set to flex their muscles again. Prediction: Limerick

ROSCOMMON LEITRIM Roscommon scored 4-10 in the second half as they put Leitrim to the sword at Dr. Hyde Park and they will now meet Sligo after they beat Mayo, also on Friday night, in a ‘must win’ game in the final round of games in this Connacht championship round-robin competition. The sides were evenly matched in the opening half and it was Aaron

5-15 0-8 Oyiki’s late goal that saw the home side edge ahead at the break 1-5 to 0-4. But once Roscommon got going in the second half it was one-way traffic. Clann player Oyiki blasted home goal number two ten minutes into the new half. Adam McDermott scored a fine goal in the 44th minute and Ronan Garvin added a fourth for Roscommon before Mc-

Dermott capped a fine display from the home side with a fifth goal late in the game. Now it all comes down to that clash with Sligo at the end of June. Horses for Courses There is one meeting this evening at Leopardstown featuring two listed stakes, The Glencairn Stakes and the King George V Stakes, starting at 5.45 pm. This evening also hosts the first evening of the Bulmer’s Live at Leopardstown Music Festival and features HamsandwicH. Tomorrow, racing is on the flat at the Curragh away at 5.30 pm and over the sticks at Clonmel, off at 5.45 pm. On Saturday, Navan is away at 2.15 pm on the flat. Another blank day on Sunday and Roscommon hosts its two-day June meeting on Monday and Tuesday with racing on the level on Monday at 5.55 pm and over jumps on Tuesday.

Review Kilbeggan on Friday evening featured the Kilmurray’s Homevalue Hardware Handicap Chase was won by JP McManus’s Don’t Let Go beating Hugo ‘n’ Taz and Stoneford by 1¼l and 1l. We will probably see the winner and third back here later in the season for bigger pickings if not in Roscommon next Tuesday. Cross-channel it was double classic weekend at Epsom with John Gosden’s Anapurna and Frankie Dettori winning the Oaks on Friday getting up on the line to beat the Ballydoyle pair of Pink Dogwood, by a neck, with Fleeting 1¼l further back in third. The winner will not be travelling to the Curragh. There was some compensation on Saturday as O’Brien provided five of the first six Irish trained finishers. Anthony Van Dyck, ridden by Seamie Heffernan, gave O’Brien his seventh win in the race. The story of the race is secondplaced Madhmoon, trained by octogenarian Kevin Prendergast on the Curragh, however. He denied Ballydoyle a clean sweep as they filled the next four places. Hopefully we will see a rematch in the Curragh. In the third classic of the weekend on Sunday at Chantilly in the French Derby, O’Brien’s Cape Of Good Hope finished fourth.

T

hese are just some of the magnificent new state-of-theart facilities which have been completed at Roscommon Racecourse as an ambitious five-year plan comes to fruition at Lenabane. The Roscommon People was given an informal tour of the new facilities on Saturday afternoon – and we were suitably wowed by what we saw. The project is quite stunning, elevating the already popular racecourse on to a new level, with a range of facilities which, in a significant boost for Roscommon Races, have been enthusiastically welcomed by all stakeholders in the horseracing industry. While there has been development work ongoing at Roscommon Racecourse throughout recent years, this latest project is the key element of a five-year plan which was embarked upon in 2014. The project cost around €800,000 and means that Roscommon Racecourse now has facilities for jockeys and trainers which are the envy of many of the country’s racing venues. The beautiful new building features a weigh room, male & female jockeys’ areas, Manager’s office, First aid rooms, new press/media room,

drug testing room, stewards’ room, sauna/showers, valet room, small restaurant, etc. Future development work will include the extension of the parade ring. The magnificent ‘finish’ is a tribute to local tradespeople and suppliers too. The Main Contractor was Biesty Construction. The board engaged the services of Albert Looby of AOL Design Ltd. and there was a huge local involvement on all aspects of the project. I was greeted by Racecourse Manager/Secretary Michael Finneran, Board chairperson Dick O’Brien and fellow board members. Mr. O’Brien said that the new facilities had attracted much favourable comment at the first race meeting of the season in Roscommon, held last month. Jockeys, trainers, owners and members of the press were all extremely positive about the development. Board director Robbie McConn gave me a first look at the new facilities, accompanied by Albert Looby of AOL Design Ltd. The first thing to say is that this is a very striking building, with a beautiful glass façade, and very visible wheelchair accessibility. Inside is a spacious reception area and off it are a number of separate

areas. Approximately 75 jockeys can be catered for. There are showers and saunas adjoining, and a separate room for valets. Everything is stateof-the-art. Further down, there’s a physio area, then two medical/first aid rooms, one for jockeys, one for members of the public, should any race-goer have a mishap or a health setback. There’s a small but cosy restaurant area for jockeys, a smoking

area too. There are numerous TV screens, no doubt reflecting the fact that jockeys want to keep an eye on the action. To the left is a new media centre, a drug testing room, and a Stewards’ room where contentious issues are reviewed and determinations made. Finally, Robbie leads us into the new Manager’s office where a nice feature is a display of framed old black and white photographs which remind us of the proud history of the Lenabane course. Board member George McCourt is a man who is synonymous with the Roscommon Races’ success story. George outlined how a five-year plan had been submitted to Horseracing Ireland, and has now been delivered on schedule. “It’s a great design and one that has been very well received, with very positive feedback from jockeys, trainers, racing officials and members of the public. We had consulted with all stakeholders to get their input into the design of the building,” George commented. “What the jockeys really like is the ‘flow’ of it, how well it’s planned, how everything is accessible. We now have private, separate facilities for male and female jockeys, we have a first aid room for jockeys and

a separate one for members of the public. “90% of the funding that we received went back into the local economy, to local suppliers, and we’re delighted about that,” Mr. McCourt added. Before we leave, it’s important to have a quick word with the modest, relentlessly hard-working and passionate face of Roscommon Races, one Michael Finneran. He looked and sounded like a happy – and relieved – man. Admitting that it had been a stressful few months – in the ‘race’ to have the work done by start of racing season – Mr. Finneran said he was delighted with the completed project. “It was great to hear such positive comments about the new facilities at our recent meeting,” Michael said. Michael and all board members expressed their gratitude to Biesty Construction and AOL Design for doing such an excellent job. As we prepared to leave, a young man on a ride-on lawnmower was busy cutting the grass. The place was looking splendid. The horses’ stables, parade ring, bars and viewing stand were all lying empty, awaiting the sport, drama, excitement and social whirl that next week – and the season – will bring.

Two-day meeting next week The opening fixture of the year at Roscommon Racecourse met with widespread approval and what was most satisfying was the positive feedback for the facilities, including the new Weigh Room. The new Weigh Room was properly ‘road-tested’ the last day and it was great to hear from the jockeys,

press and stewards, all of whom confirmed that everything was most impressive. Shane Lyons, brother and assistant to racehorse trainer Ger Lyons, tweeted a picture of the track on the day, captioning it ‘The best maintained racecourse in the world’! Feedback like that gives

the staff who look after the track a huge boost and it augurs well for the remaining eight fixtures, the first of which gets underway on Monday next, the 10th of June. The first race is due off at 5.55 and sponsors on the evening are Foran Equine, Irish EBF/Irish Stallion Farms, Sherry Fitzgerald P.
