INHERITANCE TAX ADVICE I hope you can advise me on a sensitive matter. My wife sadly passed away five years ago and I believe that her parents have made a will leaving me a large sum of money. They had originally made a will leaving this sum to my wife but when she passed away they changed the will to benefit me instead. Will I have a very large tax bill when I receive this inheritance? A person is entitled to receive an inheritance up to a certain value without being liable for inheritance tax. The amount of tax payable depends on the value of the inheritance and the relationship between the parties. The tax-free amount, or threshold, varies depending on your relationship to the person giving the benefit. For tax purposes the relationships are categorised into three different groups namely Group A, B and C. Group A applies where the beneficiary i.e. the person receiving the gift or inheritance is a child of the person giving that gift or inheritance (disponer). Group B applies where the beneficiary is a grandparent, grandchild, great-grandchild, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, nephew or niece of the disponer. Group C applies to any relationship not included in Group A or Group B. The amount that can be received tax free is known as the threshold. The threshold for Group A (a child) is €320,000. The threshold for Group B (such as a nephew) is €32,500. The threshold for Group C (everyone else) is €16,250. However, an exception applies in your particular circumstances. Because you will receive an inheritance from a relation of your deceased spouse, you can be assessed with the same group as your spouse would be if they were receiving the benefit from their relation. For example, if someone receives an inheritance from a spouse’s parent, the group threshold would be Group C. But if you receive an inheritance from your spouse’s father, and your spouse is deceased, then the group threshold that applies to you would be the same as for a child receiving an inheritance from a parent .ie. Group A.

So, as the children would say…how many more sleeps? Just the two – it’s incredible! Can’t wait! I’m the same as you…it’s magic! It’s a part of what we are! We live for it! Elite sport, the top teams facing off… star players, high profile managers… Can’t beat All-Ireland football semifinal weekend! No, the Premier League – it’s back, this weekend! Part of what we are? Part of what we are? What are you on about! Eh…it’s all about community… Surely that’s the GAA you’re talking about! The Premier League…part of what we are? We have NOTHING in common with that circus. They’re overpaid. They’re multimillionaires! Some of them are spoilt! Some of them can’t string two words together…and they have no loyalty to their clubs, they’re mercenaries! Bit harsh… No! It’s true! These Premier League stars, most of them make me sick! On the contrary…the lads that will line out in Croke Park this weekend, they’re real heroes! They’re MY heroes… Steady on, don’t forget it’s Mayo on Saturday, not the Rossies… Well, you know what I mean…in

Agreed…and that’s just the officials, you should have seen the umpires the other evening… Very funny…I mean the players. Give me O’Shea or Murphy or Fenton over those Premier League fancy dans any day! In fairness, you’re right. And what a win by Mayo against Donegal. AND…Roscommon beat Cork! A

Still…all the same… Wha’? Eh…the Premier League… What about it? Well…like…it does get fairly interesting. I mean, I can’t believe United have paid £80 million for Maguire, and I wonder can anyone stop City, and did you see where Steve Bruce went to Newcastle…and I think ‘Pool could do it this year…and Chelsea…and Jeff Stelling, oh I love Jeff Stelling…and Final Score…and Sky Sports…and Match of the Day… Both: Yep, love it!

What we liked… We’re hailing the Roscommon senior football team and management. We’re not denying that the Cork/Roscommon game probably merited that dead-rubber label (as Dublin and Tyrone had already qualified), but both sides were still desperate to win. For Roscommon, the challenge was to show evidence of progress; Sunday’s win, on top of a very competitive showing against Tyrone, confirms our growing status…now arguably in the top six/seven in the country. G’wan the Rossies!

Dunno why we even mentioned the ould soccer…bloody foreign game…lazy multimillionaires… divers…mercenaries…boring… Eh…agreed. Eh…yeah, agreed. Boring. Boring.

Our Alternative Awards

Channel-hopping the other night, and…we know it’s the holiday (and silly) season, but is there any chance of finding something decent to watch on TV? It’s non-stop reality shows. We can’t cope with all this gardening/home renovations/purchasing of apartments in the sun/C-list celebs prancing about. What next? A reality show about long-suffering viewers watching reality shows? Thank God the Premier League is back…

The ‘Fair play to the noisy neighbours’ Award Whisper it…but this is a Roscommon newspaper giving full credit to our noisy neighbours! Mayo were impressive in defeating a fancied Donegal in Saturday’s do-or-die Super 8s game. And we fully expect Mayo to push the mighty Dubs all the way this Saturday. Calling all Rossies in Ballaghaderreen…red (and green) alert…stand by and prepare for all eventualities!

The ‘Services to late-night current affairs TV’ Award We were a touch nostalgic recently when watching Andrew Neil signing off on the last ever ‘This Week’. Whatever your view on the political musings of the programme’s host (and indeed its regular guests), ‘This Week’ was an innovative, slick, entertaining and offbeat current affairs show. Andrew Neil is a magnificent veteran, a great old-style journalist. This Week will be missed!

The Centre Point Retail Park at Circular Road, Roscommon has been sold to a group of three investors, including a new cinema operator.

Multi-million euro sale of Centre Point Retail Park confirmed • NEW CINEMA OWNER • UP TO 100 JOBS EXPECTED  PAUL HEALY

The multi-million euro sale of one of the region’s most renowned retail parks is expected to lead to the creation of up to 100 jobs and significant development benefits for Roscommon Town and surrounding areas. The Centre Point Retail Park at Circular Road, Roscommon has been sold to a group of three investors, including a new cinema operator. The deal involves the sale of ten substantial shop units (seven vacant and three investment units and a cinema) in what is a primely located 86,000 sq.ft. commercial park. The deal does not include independent shops on site – Brand Max, Lidl, Aldi or the former KFC outlet.

Since opening a number of years ago, the Centre Point Retail Park has become one of the busiest in the region, with very significant footfall. Following confirmation of this week’s purchase, it is now expected that the deal will result in up to 100 new jobs and significant economic spin-offs. The identity of the purchasers and cost of purchase are not being disclosed at this point, but the Roscommon People understands that it is a multimillion euro deal. Well-known local auctioneer, John Earley – of Property Partners Earley Roscommon – confirmed that terms had been agreed with “three investors, including a UK company and a new cinema operator”. Mr. Earley said that the deal was done in conjunction

with Peter Love of Messers Cushman & Wakefield. Mr. Earley commented: “We are delighted to announce that terms have recently been agreed…the deal incorporates ten shop units…offering approx. 86,000 sq.ft. of commercial space in total. We are optimistic that this sale will have a major positive effect on Roscommon town and surrounding areas with up to 100 jobs in the pipeline, which will bring new money to Roscommon town and the greater business and housing market”. Mr. Earley said that a deal “of this magnitude” highlights Roscommon town as a recognised retail centre. He said that Property Partners Earley hope to be in a position to announce the names of the new retailers over the coming weeks.

Fresh probe into 1993 murder?

It was reported on Tuesday that the National Bureau of Investigation’s serious crime review team is expected to carry out a fresh probe into the 1993 murder of a Ballinasloe mother-of-one. Nobody has ever been charged with the murder of Marie Kilmartin, who was 35-years-old and living in Portlaoise where she was working in an old people’s home when she disappeared in December

1993. Her body was found six months later in a bog near the Laois-Offaly border. According to the Irish Independent, a detective made an application last week at the Central Criminal Court for interviews gardaí had with the chief suspect in the case, which were recorded on VCR tapes, to be transferred to DVD. It is believed the tapes contain six interviews conducted between 1994 and 2008. The applica-

The case is now expected to be investigated by the National Bureau of Investigation’s serious crime review team, also known as the ‘cold case’ team. This is the latest major development in the case since three people – two men and a woman aged in their 40s and 60s – were arrested in September 2008.

Cable fault caused major power outage in Roscommon Town The ESB confirmed earlier this week that a cable fault was the cause of a power outage which affected around 3,000 customers in Roscommon town last Saturday. Many premises were affected by the fault which occurred from approximately 7 am on Saturday morning and resulted in many businesses remaining closed until the issue was eventually resolved at around 12 noon. The ESB said that power was restored to most

customers within five hours but that unfortunately there was then a second fault on the Roscommon town network which led to further power outages from 2.30 pm and 6.30 pm on Saturday afternoon. Essential works were carried out on the Roscommon town network on Tuesday with no further faults reported. The ESB subsequently apologised to customers for any inconvenience caused by Saturday’s power outage.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor

Super! Rossies sign off with a win…

If only they’d known what was going to happen, Willie and Nigel could have brought a calculator with them...to Cork, last Sunday. Between goals and yellow/black cards, the dynamic duo bringing the good news across the radio airwaves briefly struggled to keep count…well, of the cards being brandished, at least. There was no fear of the experienced duo losing count of the goals. We’d attended the Cemetery Mass in Bornacoola earlier in the day. We stayed in Rooskey/ Dromod area during the afternoon, and there was a nice summer atmosphere. By 4 pm, we had one eye on Tyrone v Dublin and two ears on Cork v Ros. I had a good feeling about last Sunday – and little regard for the ‘dead-rubber’ label. It was obvious that both teams were desperate to win. The prize of an All-Ireland semi-final may have been gone, but there was arguably still a fair bit at stake…whatever the national media and neutrals might say. Third place in the group. The morale boost of a championship win. Status/bragging rights amongst the pack chasing the top five. A confidencebooster ahead of next season. Winning was arguably particularly important for

paul@roscommonpeople.ie

Roscommon, in light of three disappointing outings in last year’s inaugural Super 8s. And win our lads did. It was a typically helterskelter end of season game, fortunes fluctuating, goals coming thick and fast. The outbreaks of ‘fisticuffs’ was evidence of how much it meant to the players. Roscommon prevailed, and by all accounts fully deserved the win. Willie and Nigel did the business in style, with lots of passion. We won our first ever Super 8s’ game. Four championship wins from six outings this season (plus a very competitive showing against Tyrone). Away wins in the same championship season against Mayo, Galway and Cork. A gleaming Nestor Cup. Well done lads. Great stuff. Roll on 2020.

No deal Brexit? Just a blip!

Any time you have numerous sightings of a member of a rarely spotted species, it’s worthy of comment. Usually they hibernate at this time of year – most of the year in fact – and can really only be found sipping expensive whiskeys and talking with affectation in some lavish lounge deep in the heart of the House of Lords, a House of Commons chamber, an exclusive men’s club, or in their retreat in the south of France.

Pictured at the Roscommon Races on Tuesday evening were Ruth and Samantha Coyle from Lecarrow. Pic: Michelle Hughes Walsh

Now? Now you’ll find them prowling around the Newsnight, Channel 4 (news) and Sky studios, twitching nervously before going on air, for fear of too much contact with ordinary people. If it weren’t for the fact that the issues under ‘discussion’ are so serious, I’d nearly say they’ve brightened up my summer. Yeah, the Tory posh boys/ toffs really are back in town. The latest to bewilder was one Norman Lamont – last at the heart of Government in 1993 – who added his smug analysis of the Brexit crisis

on Newsnight on Tuesday. A ‘no deal Brexit’ would merely be a short-term “blip” Lamont told Newsnight. I wonder how that comment went down with the thousands of Brits who have already lost their jobs in the car manufacturing industry? Not to mention the millions of people on these islands who are worried about Brexit, particularly a no deal one? The prospect of ‘posh boy’ Tories recklessly leading the UK towards a Brexit crashout is now very real. And when it all comes to

pass – whatever final twist awaits – the privileged ‘posh boy’ Tories – who wouldn’t be able to tell you the price of a loaf of bread if you gave them 100 guesses – will slink back into the shadows, returning to wherever they live, which is not really in the real world. Their countryfolk, meanwhile, will be left with the ‘blip’…

Marty update…

There I was the other day, listening to the radio and watching the TV…and I

could neither hear nor see Marty. Marty Morrissey. Naturally, I was stunned at this shock turn of events. I had double-checked all the obscure reality shows, every possible sports programme, even the weather bulletin…but not a single sign of Marty. Very worrying. I rang RTE to complain about this lack of Marty, an absence which goes against everything our society has become accustomed to. Where is the multitasking and omnipresent Marty, I intended to ask. The phone rang. And Marty answered. I told him I wanted to be put through to the complaints department. I am the complaints department, Marty said. Give me the commissioning editor, I said. I am effectively the commissioning editor, Marty said, not missing a beat, not even a tiny bit embarrassed. He put me on hold – the recorded music was Marty singing. I thought he was a touch arrogant, so I actually changed tack. Give me the equality officer, you’re on TV and radio too much, I ventured. I am the equality officer, Marty said. Put me on to the DG, I said. “It’s Dee Forbes… give me Dee!” “People THINK it’s Dee Forbes” Marty said, “but in reality…” I gave up.

It was August … and the country was emptying… One day, last week. The woman looked at her husband…clutching his smartphone and seemingly determined to make that call. “They’re all gone!” she repeated, shaking her head. “Don’t you realise, it’s August…it’ll be more frustrating than ever. The country’s empty!” But the poor man was determined. He had a query. He had to speak to someone. He knew all about the automated services, about being put on hold, all that type of thing. But he had to make the call… After twenty minutes, he got an answer. The man nodded at his wife, as if to say ‘told you they’d answer.

Country empty?’ She smiled. He got a human too…on the other end of the line. “It’s a human!” the man mouthed excitedly to his wife. “Good morning! Thank you for calling” the human said. “Your call is important to us. Now before proceeding, can I ask you a few security questions…” “Sure…” “Can you confirm your name, address, date of birth…weight…” “Eh…?” “Regulations! Also, your favourite food, who you’d like to see winning Love Island…” “Eh?” “We just have to observe certain guidelines. Thank you, sir. Now,

how can I help you today?” The man told the lady on the line what his query was. “Thank you! Now, I’m going to put you back to the switchboard…press 1 if you want to be put through to the desk of David, he’s gone on the holiday of a lifetime to Australia…” “What?” “Or press 2 if you want to hear Mozart while you wait…and I can have a coffee”. “Press 3 if you’d like to be put through to the voicemail of Gordon, he’s golfing in Kerry”. “Press 4 if you want to leave a message for Michelle, she called in sick, but she’s actually availing of the nice weather and hosting an

impromptu barbeque”. “Press 5 if you want to leave a voicemail for Yvonne, she’s on gardening leave. No, she’s not suspended, she’s actually taken time off to do some gardening”. The poor man mumbled that he just wanted his query dealt with…a sum of money had been deducted from his account. The lady was so understanding… “Well, yes sir, I can confirm that sum you mention has been deducted, but I’m not permitted to discuss your personal account in any more detail. You’d have to speak to my line manager”. “By any chance…is your line manager there?”

“Surfing in Strandhill, it’s beautiful”. “Can ANYONE help me?” “You ARE impatient, sir! Will I put you on hold?” “No, not the ‘hold option’ please… anything but hold!” the man cried. “But it’s Mozart…very relaxing… the first half hour in particular…” “Please! Can you just deal with my query!” “Well, okay. By the way, Gordon has just birdied the 7th in Ballybunion, he’s thrilled! Okay, I can talk to you about your query… but let’s make it snappy…I’m on a half-day…” “YOU’RE on a half-day?” “Of course…Galway Races!”

Hopkins wants clarity on threat to jobs Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has called for more clarity – including from the Government that her party leads – on the issues which have arisen in relation to ESB and Bord na Móna sites in Lanesboro and Shannonbridge over the past number of weeks. Senator Hopkins was one of a number of Oireachtas members who met with Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Richard Bruton in Tullamore on Wednesday of last week.

Senator Hopkins said: “There remains a significant level of uncertainty at present and this is causing distress for many of the affected workers and their families. I have been asking for clarity on the matter and on options available to secure the future of both plants and maintain quality employment for affected workers. “Hundreds of workers across this region rely on each of these stations for either direct or indirect employment. They must be our first priority and I have made this

point very clear to An Taoiseach and Minister Bruton”. Senator Hopkins added: “We know that changes need to be made in the long-term. However, this change so far has not been structured, planned or organised with clear aims and objectives taking account of employees and local communities. It is very important that the Government, Bord na Móna and ESB work out an agreed plan in order to support workers and deal with the challenges of climate change”.

Farmers urged to reject factory ‘sweetheart’ deals Naughten’s conference call: See page 19 Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called on farmers to stick together in an effort to secure a more sustainable income moving forward, and to reject the “sweetheart deals” being offered by some factories. Having been in attendance at a number of the protests in recent days, the Roscommon-Galway TD said: “I have called to a number of places where members and supporters of the Beef Plan Movement have been holding peaceful protests. “It has been unbelievable to see vehicles, especially lorries, driving through the picket lines with little or no regard for the people holding the peaceful protest. “I think it is imperative that the likes of the Road Haulage Association would encourage those people with artics, rigids and trailers to respect people who are taking part in a peaceful protest if they are

members of their association”. He added: “It would be important for the association to come out and advocate for respect to be shown by drivers to all protestors that are abiding by the law and wearing high visibility jackets. “It has also been heartening to see instances where farmers have arrived with their produce and have turned around in support of the movement. This is a difficult time for all farmers, throughout the length and breadth of the country”. Deputy Fitzmaurice said “special deals” are being offered to those who pass the picket line, but he urged farmers to stick together. “What every farmer in rural Ireland must realise is that it is not sustainable to continue taking the price that is there at the moment. “You may be a winner today for taking a sweetheart deal because you brought sheep or cattle to the factory, but down the road you will get the same treatment as everyone else,” he concluded.

Beef Plan protest not going away – Kerrane are now in place in 19 locations across the State with more and more farmers and supporters joining the picket lines every day. “I commend everyone who is taking a stand for fair and decent pay for beef farmers – the very least they deserve. “As the daughter of a beef farmer, I know the struggles being faced by beef farmers and I am hugely proud of the stand farmers are taking. It’s a stand the IFA would never have the

guts to take, not least due to their cosy alliance to the Fine Gael party. That’s now irrelevant because we have a new and growing movement to represent beef farmers and their families. “Minister Creed needs to wake up and he needs to do so quickly. He is the Minister for Agriculture and he needs to intervene right now. In the meantime, the pickets will continue with Beef Plan members more determined than ever”.

STRAIGHT TALKING

WITH SEAMUS DUKE

End of term report …on politicians! Fine Gael The proverbial curate’s egg. There are times when Leo looks very much the dapper, welleducated modern young leader, and then he opens his mouth and comes out with some unbelievable stuff. It’s not a great trait to have with crucial and sensitive Brexit negotiations on the way. In fact, Simon Coveney looks an altogether safer pair of hands. Fine Gael look set to be the biggest party once again after the next election, but they will be hoping to form a far more solid coalition Government. They may have to deal with the Greens in order to get back into power.

Fianna Fáil It remains to be seen whether or not Fianna Fáil will get a bounce for ‘wearing the green jersey’ over the past three years. In reality, they have been in a pretty impossible position. They can give out all they like about Fine Gael, but they won’t vote against them. They seem to be stuck at about 23% in the polls, which would see them behind Fine Gael. This will be Micheál Martin’s final hurrah. It looks like he will become the first ever FF leader not to be Taoiseach.

Sinn Féin It’s very interesting to look at what’s happening to Sinn Féin. They were growing spectacularly for three or four years but that growth has stalled and has now gone into reverse. Since Mary Lou McDonald took over they have gone down in the polls, which is surprising. The fact that they are still out of Government in the North, and that they are seen to be very negative on most major is-

sues here, is telling against them. It’s very unlikely that either of the main parties would go into Government with Sinn Féin, which is also a major problem for Mary Lou.

are being squeezed by Sinn Féin and People Before Profit/Solidarity/‘the left’ on one side and by the Greens on the other. I would fear for them in the next election.

The Green Party

People Before Profit/ Solidarity

They are back with a bang and they will grow furher too. They could have as many as 10 TDs elected in the next election. They will be the kingmakers in the next Dáil. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing remains to be seen, but certainly the Green agenda is here to stay.

There is always going to be a certain amount of support for the far left and well educated politicians like Paul Murphy, Richard Boyd Barrett and Ruth Coppinger (whethere you like them or not) look safe. They may not be everyone’s cup of tea but there is a vote out there for them.

Labour The end could be nigh for the Labour Party, which seems to have lost all direction. They

Now that the politicians are off on their holidays it is an opportune time to take a look at the political landscape as it stands at the moment. By common consent we will be having a General Election some time early in 2020 – so how are the main parties shaping up?

Other Independents The advent of ‘new politics’ saw the likes of Shane Ross, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran and Sean Canney assume ministerial office. They did well – but a lot of people would welcome any future Government being minus Ross…in particular! Many people in this area feel he is anti-rural. Other high profile Independents like Michael Fitzmaurice and Denis Naughten will only be effective as part of a grouping that can challenge any sitting Government on the issues of the day. Overall then, it looks like more of the same when the General Election votes are counted in early 2020, with no party making huge gains. The exception and unknown quantity are the Green Party who are certain to hold the balance of power when the next Government is being formed. Here in this constituency I can see no change with Michael Fitzmaurice, Eugene Murphy and Denis Naughten holding on to their seats.

Locals attend International Foróige leadership conference Five young people from Roscommon – Hannah Geever, Andrew Cahalin, Darragh Flynn, Thomas Woods and Aaron McDonnell – joined 250 teenagers from India, the USA, and all over Ireland in Kildare for Foróige’s Leadership for Life Conference. The conference brings together teenagers, aged 15-18, to learn how

to become leaders in their own lives. During the week-long conference, they learn crucial life skills such as empathy, decision-making, communication skills, critical thinking and teamwork. Seán Campbell, CEO of Foróige, said: “The Leadership for Life programme enables young people to develop the skills, inspiration, vi-

sion, confidence, and action plans to be effective leaders. Great leadership is grounded in respect and the ability to inspire. In the week ahead these young leaders will uncover the greatness within themselves and their own unique leadership style. “Young people have a greater role to play now, more than ever before, in the issues that really matter. Youth

activism and community action is a central part of our Leadership programme, and I’m both delighted and in awe of what these young people achieve when given the opportunity”. The 250 delegates, aged 15 to 18, graduated last Friday having completed various stages of the leadership programme.

Creed must call emergency beef summit – Naughten Independent TD Denis Naughten has called on Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed to convene an emergency summit of all the key players in the beef sector “in light of growing tensions between farmers, processors and those regulating the beef sector”. Deputy Naughten said: “From my recent discussions with many farmers, it is clear that they do not want to be protesting but there is huge fear as to the viability of beef farming particularly over the coming weeks. “Before this situation escalates, Minister Creed needs

to bring all of the players together under an independent chair to assess the current situation and explore all potential options for the beef sector. “As a measure of goodwill the Government must commit to fast-tracking, as a matter of urgency, the new EU law which will ban 16 unfair trading practices covering agricultural and food products traded in the food supply chain. “All farmers want is a fair price for what they produce but clearly someone is making a huge margin at their expense.

“In a recent survey I conducted, the share of the price of beef going to farmers has dropped by one quarter over the last 15 years, which clearly highlights the reason why the suckler beef sector is struggling and why we need new laws to ban unfair trading practices. “The fact is our suckler beef industry is the lifeblood of towns and villages the length and breadth of the country and unless we get everybody around the table quickly then we risk condemning the Irish countryside to desolation,” concluded Denis Naughten.

Working Artists Roscommon exhibit opens on Friday Working Artists Roscommon (WAR) have announced details of their exhibition, which opens this Friday (9th) and runs until October 4th in the new gallery space in Roscommon Arts Centre as part of the 8degrees West celebration. Working Artists Roscommon are a group of six visual artists, namely Frances Crowe, Joseph Cunniffe, Honor Fitzgerald, Dympna Molloy, Noel Molloy and Anne Rigney, who have been together since 1990 in diverse media including painting, mixed media, collage, ceramics, wood sculpture, found objects, stone, bronze, fibre art, and performance. Their aim was to create a greater awareness of contemporary art in Roscommon and to help each other feel less isolated as artists living in rural Ireland. They also wished to create spaces for their work to be exhibited and find studio space in which to work. WAR were instrumental in receiving initial funding from the Arts Council which was used to establish Roscommon Arts Centre. This exhibition in the new Gallery space is in a sense, a dream come true for the members of WAR. Since their formation twenty-nine years ago, WAR have exhibited both nationally and internationally including in Germany, Poland, Scotland, USA, Canada and China, within their own individual practises and as a group. The exhibition will be officially opened by Mr. Maurice

Buckley, Executive Chairman of the Office of Public Works. Maurice’s connection with Roscommon and Working Artists goes back to the 1990s. He has been a staunch supporter of the arts in Roscommon. The exhibition will be an eclectic mix of paintings, oil, acrylic, water colours by Honor Fitzgerald and Anne Rigney; a series of wall and free standing works of found object by Noel Molloy; Wood sculpture by Joe Cunniffe, bronze sculpture and installation by Dympna Molloy and a series of wall and free standing fibre work installations by Frances Crowe. FRANK

BRANDON

FRANK BRANDON’S

unique take on life ...

Murder in the mall:Will Americans ever change their gun laws? It’s Friday afternoon. Carol and I are visiting our daughter in Dublin, and as you do on these occasions, we head off to some big shopping centre where Lisa (our daughter) says there are sales everywhere (music to Carol’s ears), and for a couple of hours we mingle with the huge Bank holiday crowds, do a bit of window shopping, a bit of real shopping, have a break for a coffee and scone, and generally enjoy a nice, peaceful, lazy afternoon. Fast-forward to Saturday afternoon, and over in El Paso, Texas, a similar scene is taking place in a Walmart shopping mall, and shoppers are going about their business. It’s probably exactly the same scenario as we had experienced the day before. Then, a man casually walked into the mall, and opened fire with an assault rifle at random…in a matter of minutes, 20 people are dead and 26 injured. Among the dead is young mother Jordan Anchondo, who died as

she tried to shield her two-month-old baby from the attack. The suspect is Patrick Crusius, described as a hate-filled anti-Hispanic white supremacist. Apparently, the gunman wanted to kill as many Mexicans as he could. In fact there were three Mexicans amongst the victims. The killer, we are told, didn’t want to kill Americans, but reports indicate that the majority of his victims were indeed Americans. A number of hours later, in Dayton, Ohio, as revellers were queuing to get into a bar, a second gunman, Connor Betts, opened fire on unsuspecting innocent victims. He killed nine people, including his own sister. Following this carnage, America’s gun laws are yet again coming under huge scrutiny. I am well aware that there is a powerful lobby, fuelled by enormous financial muscle, which doesn’t want any change to

the very liberal rules which apply to gun purchase and ownership – but surely, after 251 mass shootings in the country so far this year, something has to change? As for all of us, who throughout last weekend attended festivals, carnivals, bars and nightclubs all over the country, while it rightly never enters our heads, it’s nice to reflect on the fact that we can do so in relative safety, with only long queues and maybe the odd row between a couple of drink-fuelled lads to upset us. For those people in America who do the very same thing, there now has to be the nagging thought, even if it’s buried deep in their head, that there might just be someone in the crowd who is planning to carry out another terrible atrocity. Not a nice situation, and one that the politicians over there surely ought to address right now. However, we won’t hold our breath.

And finally… TC’s great birthday gesture

Roisin and Realtan O’Keeffe and Tessa Kiernan pictured at Ballygar Carnival last Sunday. Pic: Mick McCormack

Fun (and buns) at the fair! It’s now Monday afternoon, and I am just back from a visit to Ballygar – where the Fair Day is taking place – and I have to say it was a visit that I thoroughly enjoyed. The weather, which hadn’t been great earlier in the morning, had cleared up quite a bit, and there was a huge crowd roaming the streets…looking at the massive amount of stalls, having fun on the amusements, and generally enjoying themselves – and the atmosphere was just lovely. I got away from the amusements as quickly as I could as there was a flying machine going around that reminded me of a trip I took on one on a Sunday morning a good few years ago, when I thought I was going to die. It was the following Thursday before I

recovered, so even looking at one flying around in Ballygar was almost enough to make me sick all over again. I met loads of people who were out for the day, and among them were two of Ballygar’s finest footballers – triple All-Ireland medal winner, Sean Cleary, who was there with his wife Ann and his brother Shay, and also Tomas Heavey. Tomas, whom I often played against during his football days, never wanted to let me have the ball, and used to knock lumps out of me to make sure I didn’t get it! He was promoting a book, ‘From Ballinamore to Ballygar and Newbridge’, a history of the parish of Ballygar, Newbridge, and Toghergar from 1800 to 1918. Written by Michael A. Martin,

it looks to be a ‘must buy’ for all local people. Sales were flying when I was there, so I’m sure it will be a bestseller! Our good friend, Myra Fitzmaurice, was on a stall for the tidy towns selling all kinds of cakes and stuff, and I couldn’t resist a few of the most gorgeous cream buns. I’m just boiling the kettle now, so I will take a little break from my writing and have the cup of tea and bun. (A few minutes later…) The tea is over now, and the bun(s) proved to be delicious, and just for a moment my mind drifts to this coming weekend when the All-Ireland football semi-finals take place, and I can’t figure out how all of a sudden there is a feeling that Mayo can shock

the five-in-a-row chasing Dubs. I realise that the men from the west have given the Dubs really hard games before, but they still haven’t beaten them, while this Mayo team has already lost to Roscommon and Kerry this summer. Now, while I admire Mayo enormously for all they have done in the last few years, I really think the champions will have way too much for them and will win easily enough. I also admit that I hope I am wrong, and if ever a man looked forward to eating some humble pie, then I am your man. The other game is harder to call, but I hope the Kingdom overcome Mickey Harte’s Tyrone and set up a mouthwatering All-Ireland final.

Finally for this week, Glinsk’s Tom Cunningham, better known as TC, has asked me to tell you about a big fundraising dance he is holding in Dowd’s of Glinsk on this Friday night, 9th of August. Tom will have turned 60 (hope he doesn’t mind my telling you) by the time you read this, but rather than have a big birthday party, he has decided for very important personal reasons, to hold this fundraiser, proceeds of which will be going to the Irish Cancer Society and Ability West. Music on the night is by Jimmy Kearney and The Lancers, admission is optional, and local TD Michael Fitzmaurice will conduct an auction. Light refreshments will be served. I can only say fair play to TC for this wonderful gesture, so now it’s up to you (and me) to get to Dowd’s on this Friday night – and make it a night to remember. See you there.

Till next week, Bye for now!

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION We are born of the faith of our fathers, descending from a great cloud of witnesses whose faith is attested to on every page of Scripture (see Hebrews 12:1). We have been made His people, chosen for His own inheritance, as we sing in this Sunday’s Psalm. The Liturgy this week sings the praises of our fathers, recalling the defining moments in our “family history”. In the Epistle, we remember the calling of Abraham; in the First Reading we relive the night of the Exodus and the summons of the holy children of Israel. Our fathers, we are told, trusted in the Word of God, put their faith in His oaths. They were convinced that what He promised, He would do. None of them lived to see His promises made good. For it was not until Christ and His Church that Abraham’s descendants were made as countless as the stars and sands (see Galatians 3:16–17, 29). It was not until His Last Supper and the Eucharist that “the sacrifice…the divine institution” of that first Passover was truly fulfilled. And now we too await the final fulfillment of what God has promised us in Christ. As Jesus tells us in this week’s Gospel, we should live with our loins girded - as the Israelites tightened their belts, cinched up their long robes and ate their Passover standing, vigilant and ready to do His will (see Exodus 12:11; 2 Kings 4:29). The Lord will come at an hour we do not expect. He will knock on our door (see Revelation 3:20), inviting us to the wedding feast in the better homeland, the heavenly one that our fathers saw from afar, and which we begin to taste in each Eucharist. As they did, we can wait with “sure knowledge”, His Word like a lamp lighting our path (see Psalm 119:105). Our God is faithful, and if we wait in faith, hope in His kindness, and love as we have been loved, we will receive His promised blessing and be delivered from death. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory.com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

Golden memories at the Silver Eel  JAMIE CASSIDY

Thursday, July 4th, Independence Day USA, was one of the biggest holidays in that country. It is celebrated in many ways, with Manhattan becoming a ghost city on that day as most residents flee to the beach, parks, country locations and to the far reaches of Long Island. Outdoor barbecues are high on the agenda, where the simple food – even the old American hot dog – tastes a dozen times better alfresco. However, this great holiday is also celebrated on this side of the Atlantic – though admittedly on a more modest scale. So it was the perfect day for 52 patrons and staff from the Elphin Cay Care Centre to set off to our favourite restaurant, the lovely Silver Eel, just twenty minutes up the road. Upon our arrival, the delightful Jackie, our host, was there to greet us and get us all settled in the vast lounge. Drinks, tea and coffee were all served promptly by the catering staff. In minutes, all and sundry were in a celebratory mood and enjoying the glorious beauty of the marina just metres away, and the view of the flotilla of boats and yachts of all sizes moored at the dock. Then we were escorted to the delightful, decorated dining room for an excellent luncheon. The menu was generous with four entrées and an equal number of mouth-watering desserts, red and white wine, soft drinks, etc. The din of banter, laughter, and funny stories ensued throughout the meal, and the empty plates at the end were a sure indicator of the quality of the food. We were then invited by our gracious manager Catherine McGrath to return to the lounge as the music had just started – provided by local band ‘The Featherheads’. In minutes, the dance floor was filled with patrons. All danced to various tempos, and later a huge raffle took place with delightful prizes – and very few went home empty-handed. It was a most entertaining day, so well planned, organised and executed by the staff of the Silver Eel, Day Care Centre and the most competent drivers of the buses. Well done all.

How do we fix our childcare system? Well folks, I hate to toot my own horn, but I think I called it correctly last week when I wrote that the country’s child protection watchdog was – and I said allegedly – unable to immediately close down high-risk childcare facilities, and this week they’ve come out and confirmed that very fact. Yes, following the fall-out of RTE’s documentary regarding the disquieting goings-on at the Hyde and Seek chain of crèches, not only has Tusla identified what it deems to be a string of ‘critical’ risk levels of noncompliances occurring in 37 crèches across the country, it has also confirmed its own toothless tiger status. In addition, the Child and Family Agency is refusing to provide concerned parents with information pertaining to the alleged offenders’ names and locations. However, in this instance, it’s not Tusla’s fault. It seems their hands are tied. While it has the power to deregister a childcare service, under the Child Care Act 1991, Tusla is only required to give the offender 21 days’ notice of deregistration and the right to appeal to the District Court. What this means is that when non-compliance is observed, (i.e. the unforgivable mistreatment of children as witnessed in RTE’s documentary), the agency merely has the ability to

encourage improvement, as opposed to the legal statutory powers needed to enforce a closure. Wow, where’s the child protection policy there? So parents/grandparents/guardians, if you currently have a child or children attending a crèche/childcare facility, and you’re concerned about their welfare or indeed concerned if that facility is one of the ‘37’, here’s my advice. Sit down and write a list of those concerns; and, even if you have a good relationship with your crèche manager, insist, in a friendly manner, that he/she addresses your questions, one by one. Yes, it may be awkward, but you’re trusting this facility and paying good money for them to care for your precious child in a home-awayfrom home atmosphere, so, do what you know you have to do to ensure your child is safe. May I suggest you begin by asking the manager if they’ve undergone an inspection? If they have, ask them how they did. Ask to see written evidence of their results. In fact, if I managed a crèche, and it had undergone an inspection and passed, in light of recent happenings, I’d have my certificate framed inside the door for all to see. If your crèche discloses that they’ve unfortunately failed on certain issues, ask what they were, and ask when they expect to undergo their follow-

up inspection. When it’s completed, ask to see the results. If they have undergone both inspections and yet still failed to comply with standards, for God’s sake, grab your child’s hand and take him/her home. Ring your boss, explain the urgency of the situation, and ask for a week’s leave while you arrange alternative, responsible childcare. Your boss will understand. It’s up to us as parents to place our children first, and I’m certain a grandparent, a kind neighbour, or another trustworthy adult will step up and provide you with either an emergency, or hopefully, a long-term solution. Again, I will add that there are fantastic childcare facilities across County Roscommon, and while this latest scandal is grossly unfair to them, I’m sure they will be delighted to address any parents’ concerns, (if they have them) regarding their professional practices. In the meantime, you could check Tusla’s Quality Regulatory Framework…for all the good that may do you. However, I understand Minister for Children Katherine Zappone is examining ways to increase Tusla’s powers where serious breaches of childcare regulations are identified. Let’s hope she does this without further delay.

Maybe Arlene needs to choose her side more carefully As the Boris effect takes hold, a leaked UK government document is scaremongering us into thinking that a no-deal Brexit could ‘virtually stop’ crossborder agricultural trade in the North within 24 hours. Yes, quite literally overnight. And, following this, the advice from our fearless leader was that er, “We should be afraid of a nodeal Brexit”. Talk about stating the fizzin’ obvious Leo. Now, mind you, that Arlene Foster’s bold “dial down the rhetoric” response to our Leo wasn’t very helpful, was it? And it’s my opinion that she’d do well to wake up and share our concerns; as opposed to obtusely getting sucked into the whole Boris hype. So, with that in mind, perhaps Arlene should set aside a bit of time to consider her own party’s options and choose her side more carefully. You see Arlene, Leo is actually talking sense. Boris is merely spewing bluster. This means you’d do well to bear in mind that if farmers here are hit, it’s my view that those living North

of the border, in your constituency, will likely suffer even greater losses. While Arlene is throwing around big words like ‘belligerent’ and ‘intolerant’ to describe our government’s reaction, let me throw one back at her… ignorance! She doesn’t seem to grasp that the reason we’re insisting on a ‘backstop or nothing’ is because it’s an insurance policy. Not just for us, but for the North too. And while Arlene actively searches for more

colourful adjectives to hurl at us down here in the South, let me ask her this important question. Did it conveniently escape her notice that, as Boris visited the North for his little love-in last week, he managed to totally avoid speaking to the one group she’s apparently so concerned with, i.e. the farmers? Too busy fan-girling all over the SlumDodge Millionaire love? But look big picture, readers. I don’t think a crash-out is going to happen. In fact, I think old BJ will find himself facing a massive rebellion among the troops, resulting in his government collapsing, thus sparking a General Election. I mean, how can the Brits take him seriously? For God’s sake, this man’s first act as Prime Minister was to buy himself a £500 digital Brexit countdown clock to hang on the walls of his War Cabinet room! What does that tell you? It tells me that the individual the great British public has tasked with delivering Brexit is really nothing more than a stupid little boy with a novelty toy.

Thank you! I’m sick to death of being incarcerated in a surgical boot large enough to sail down the River Shannon in! As someone who has no patience, I’d prefer to suffer acute pain and discomfort for a short period of time, as opposed to spending what I’ve been told may possibly be twelve weeks, strapped into this unsightly contraption, accessorised by a pair of clumpy crutches! However, as I struggle on, I’ve realised one thing, and it’s this…the people of Roscommon are genuinely decent, salt-of-the-earth folks. So, this week, can I say a massive thank you to everyone who has approached me offering their support, saying how they’d read about my tumble. Thank you to those who stopped what they were doing to open doors and carry coffee for me, etc. You’re all diamonds.

Friday ‘80s night in The Midnight Club – The way it was! On Friday, August 16th, The Midnight Club in Ballaghaderreen will host an exact replica of a 1980s disco! For teenagers of the ‘80s it could be any hall in any town in Ireland. The classic teen discos of the ‘80s were generally the same wherever you went, boys on one side, the girls on the other, the long walk across the floor to ask ‘Will you dance?’ The

heartbreaking response: ‘No thanks!’ followed by the even longer walk back! These very memories are still enough 30 years later to bring back those nervous butterflies to many. For one night only you can go back in time on opening night of the Lakes and Legends Festival in Ballaghaderreen. Everything will be as it was, with classic tracks from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The 16th

of August also happens to be the anniversary of the passing of Elvis Presley, so no doubt a few numbers from ‘The King’ will also get a spin! Dig out your ‘80s gear as some long-retired DJs return to the booth for what promises to be an unforgettable night of nostalgia. There will be a fully licensed bar and admission is just €5. Doors open at 10.30 pm.

Family Fun Day on Sunday Sunday, August 18th is Family Fun Day at the Ballaghaderreen Lakes and Legends Festival with a variety of fantastic events and plenty of entertainment taking place from 1.30 pm to 4 pm. A Children’s Fancy Dress Competition will get the fun underway at 1.30 pm and this will be followed by the Children’s Treasure Hunt from 2.15 pm. The first ever Ballagh

Ball Race (sponsored by Lynch Roofing) will begin at 3 pm. This is a downhill ball race and balls can be purchased from local businesses. There are huge cash prizes to be won for the first ball over the line! The Midnight Club will play host to a fantastic Dog Show at 3.30 pm and there will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day including face-painting, bubble

tricks, stilt walking, a visit from Mickey and Minnie Mouse, hair braiding and Kilmovee Shires, Ned and Ted. Don’t forget to bring you dancing shoes for Sunday night’s Family Dance from 7 pm to 9 pm, featuring entertainment from Chris Dallat. Admission is €8 per person or €15 per two people, with U-16s going free. There will also be a raffle on the night.

Michael and his band will be performing on Saturday, August 17th in association with Ballaghaderreen Boxing Club. The country music star will be supported by the wonderful Carrie Loftus for what promises to be a fantastic night of dancing with an After-Show Country Disco to follow the live music. Doors open at 9 pm and admission is €15 with a late bar on the night.

Late of Tonlagee, Roscommon (3rd Anniversary)

Mae, whom God called Home on 1st May, 2014. Gerry, whom God called Home on 26th July, 2014.

DEAR MUM & DAD We have shed tears that you both have gone, but now we can smile because ye have lived. We have closed our eyes and prayed that ye would come back, But now we can open our eyes and see all you both have left. Our hearts were truly empty because we couldn’t see you both, But now our hearts are full of the eternal love ye shared with us. We have turned our backs on tomorrow and lived only for yesterday, But now we can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. We have fondly remembered you both and grieved that ye were gone, But now we can cherish all the beautiful memories ye have left and let them live on. We have cried and closed our minds, felt empty and turned our backs, But now, thank God, we can do what you both would dearly want us to do Pray, Smile, Open Our Eyes, Love and Go On; but Mum and Dad, You will be with us every day And will always be in our hearts.

Remembered fondly and loved by Micheal, Martina, Daniel and Rose. Also our uncle Thomas, our aunts Elizabeth, Patricia and Jeannette, our cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends. Lovingly remembered by your husband Michael ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ God saw you getting tired, A cure was not to be He put his arm around you and whispered “Come to Me” With tearful eyes we let you go, And watched you fade away Although our hearts were broken We could not make you stay A golden heart stopped beating Hard working hands at rest God knows why He took you He only takes the best

CARTY Kevin Turpane, Ballyforan In loving memory of our dear son Kevin who died on 13/8/96 (Aged 15 years) (23rd Anniversary)

$

August comes with sad regret, The day, the month We will never forget, A tribute of love to a son so dear, So close to our hearts Each day of the year, Falling tears and aching hearts, Are things we have to bear, But losing Kevin the way We did, will always seem unfair. Pray for us, O Dearest Father, To Jesus Christ our King, That he may bless our lonely home, Where thou once dwelt therein, And pray that God may give us strength, To bear our heavy loss, For no one knows only He, The treasure we have lost.

Loved and sadly missed by Mammy and Daddy. ~~~~~~~~~~ KEVIN To have you for our brother Was cause enough for pride, No one could ever equal you, No matter how they tried, Although we cannot see you, You are with us night and day, For you have a special love, Death cannot take away, Your gentle nature, Your kindly ways, Leave golden memories of bygone days, Never selfish, Always kind, What happy memories you left behind, Will those who think of him today, A little prayer to Jesus say.

Loved and remembered always by your brothers Michael and Frank. ~~~~~~~~~~ KEVIN So many things have happened Since you were called away So many things to share with you Had you been left to stay Every day in some small way Memories of you come our way Though absent, you are ever near Still missed, loved and always dear.

Loved and remembered always by your brother Michael, sisterin-law Maria and nephew baby Ciarán Kevin. Anniversary Mass for Kevin in Ballyforan Church on Friday, 9th August at 7.30pm.

Above: Roscommon players are dejected at the full-time whistle as Longford celebrate their first-ever All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ Championship win in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe last Saturday. The Roscommon Ladies Minor team suffered yet more All-Ireland final heartbreak last Saturday at Duggan Park in Ballinasloe as, twelve months on from defeat to Kildare, Ollie Colgan’s team went down in the All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ final to Longford. In a tight game of such importance major incidents are always crucial and Roscommon will point to the controversial award of a penalty to Longford with eight minutes remaining at Duggan Park in Ballinasloe last Saturday as a major turning point in this All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ Final. With Roscommon leading by a point, Longford’s Lauren McGuire’s route to goal was stopped by Megan McKeon and referee Kevin Corcoran blew immediate-

ly to award a penalty. It looked a harsh judgement, and to rub salt in the wound, Corcoran brandished a yellow card to McKeon which reduced Roscommon to 13. Ciara Healy tucked away the penalty and Longford kicked on to take the title. Roscommon manager Ollie Colgan was understandably disappointed at the full-time whistle: “It is one of the hardest things to do, to get up for the Connacht championship and then you have a six-week break to the All-Irelands. But we felt that the Clare performance (semifinal) would have brought us on a good bit, we were quietly confident today, but it’s hard to put words to it…” See page 45 for report and reaction.

lins made every post a winning one to win by 1¼l and 3¼l from the favourite Harvest Bow with Global Freedom in third. Mr Smith won at this meeting in 2017 when Byrnes had a famous treble. The feature race, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF 2m 5f Mares Beginners Chase was won by the Joseph O’Brien trained favourite Grey Waters and ridden by JJ Slevin for JP McManus with Darling Miss 2¼l second and Presenting Princess 4l away in third. Racing ended with the Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands 2m bumper when Joseph O’Brien’s Feux De Bois went on two out but was nearly caught on the line by Dakota Beat who failed by a head to get up with More Lies Ahead 8l back in third. The winner was completing a hat-trick for the Piltown trainer. Roll on the 19th of August, just two weeks away, when it is Family Day at Lenebane with loads of activities for the kids.

Mullins’ ‘perfect ten’ at Galway Races! Ballybrit review Thursday and Friday’s card were both sponsored by Guinness and started with a WP Mullins winner as his nephew David rode Dandy Mag to win the beginners chase by 2½l from the favourite Joseph O’Brien’s Early Doors with From Eden third. Only six went to post in the novice chase and Wicklow Brave completed a quick double for Mullins this time with Paul Townend in the saddle. The 1m handicap was

won by 7/1 shot Waitingfortheday from Emphatic and Yuften by ½l and ¾l. The Listed 7f race went to the favourite. Surrounding who was ½l and the same to the good over Titanium Sky and Black Magic Woman. Only six went to post in the novice hurdle where Charles Byrnes’ Doctor Duffy was a disappointing fav finishing only fourth. That man WP Mullins was on the mark again completing a treble with Foverous ridden by P Townend. Eighteen turned up for the

Guinness Galway Hurdle and Tony Martin’s Tudor City came with a winning run from the last to beat Due Reward and Band Of Outlaws, the favourite, by ½l and ¾l. The horse was completing a festival double for the trainer and owner John Breslin from the Big Apple. Sole Pretender finished fifth for local trainer Norman Lee. Naturea 1½l and 1¼l. The closing bumper was timed for 5.59 pm, 1759 the year Guinness started in St James’s Gate and saw local man Derek O’Connor win on Charles Byrnes’ trained All Those Years at odds on. On Friday another of the Mullins clan got on the mark as 20/1 outsider Lucky Icon was booted home at 20/1 by Danny Mullins for his uncle Tom Mullins. The next three favourites won Alpine Star for Jessica Harrington and Shane Foley at 7/4, Minnella Beau at 4/1 favourite for WP and Paul Townend and Mr Adjudicator in the featured flat race gave WP a double. The Guinness fillies Maiden went to the Aidan O’Brien trained Invitation ridden by Aidan’s son Donnacha at 100/30. Gary Carroll rode Tom Gibney’s Imposing Supreme, 6/1 from 8s, to victory in the Arthur Guinness Handicap over Royal Canford and Starlite Dancer. The final race of the day saw Dermot Weld record his first winner of the meeting as Hasanabad under Chris Hayes beat Sneaky Getaway and the fav The King. Tony Martin and owner John Breslin completed a treble for the week when Davy Russell won the opener on Saturday with joint favourite Mr Everest who beat Estelle Ma Belle and Born By The Sea by 4l and 3½l. The featured Grade B handicap hurdle went to Great Trango at 12/1 for David

Harry Kelly ridden by Philip Enright to victory over Ask Susan and the fav Great White Shark by 1½l and 4½l. Aidan O’Brien and son Donnacha provided the first flat winner at odds on in Emperor Of The Sun who finished in front of Delta Dawn and Gatwick Kitten. Another fav followed when connections completed a quick double with Lancaster House at 6/4. And things got better as they completed a treble winning the fifth race at 2/1 with Royal County Down. The sixth, a 7f handicap, went to Make A Challenge trained by Denis Hogan at 4/1. The penultimate flat handicap provided the feat of the week as One Cool Poet flew up the hill for the third time in the week for Matthew Smith and Billy Lee. One Cool Poet Billy Lee in all his races, three flat handicaps, and he may now step up in class and go for a big handicap on Champions Weekend. The bumper provided some solace for the layers as 20/1 outsider got up in the shadow of the post to win for Michael Kennedy and jockey Michael O’Sullivan. The only other horse to win three races at the one festival was Busted Tycoon won three times for Tony Martin in 2013, two 2m flat races and a handicap hurdle and with three different jockeys. Sunday’s action got off to a

great start for JP McManus whose Ilikedwayurthinking won the Adare Manor Opportunity Hurdle for Gavin Cromwell. Charles Byrnes’ Mr Smith won the handicap hurdle at 8/1 from 16s. The last time the horse won in Ireland was in Roscommon three years ago and was part of the infamous treble. Billy Lee was again in the winner’s enclosure as Paddy Twomey’s Raven’s Cry won the maiden. The feature race went to Ger Keane’s 20/1 shot Laughifuwant with Seamie Heffernan doing the steering. Paul Townend and Willie Mullins restored the punters confidence as Yorkhill showed a return to form to win the conditions chase at 6/4 favourite. Darragh O’Keeffe and Joseph O’Brien won the handicap chase with All The Answers who lived up to his name at 11/4 favourite. Linger, a winner over hurdles on Monday, won the 1m 6f flat handicap and racing and the week came to a close with Rocket Lad winning the bumper for Emmet Mullins and Ruth Dudfield at 9/4 from 7/2 to send some punters home happy. Willie Mullins won the leading trainer award for the fourth successive year with a total of ten winners, while Paul Townend was the top National Hunt jockey with six and Donnacha O’Brien took the Flat award with eight winners.

Seamus Duke ON SPORT

Plenty of criticism for Super 8s! There has been much criticism of the Super 8s series since the weekend and certainly events in Omagh didn’t help. The fact that Tyrone did not name even one of their starting 15 against Dublin made that fixture a farce. Mickey Harte decided that he was happy enough to take his chances against Kerry in an All-Ireland semifinal, simple as that. There must be a way of tweaking the competition so that what happened last weekend in Omagh (and Pairc Ui Rinn where there were only 2,400 people) does not happen again. National League games are far more important than the two games on Sunday and that should not be happening at the latter stages of the championship. However, on Saturday night we had a real championship battle as Mayo deservedly overcame a very disappoint-

ing Donegal side in Castlebar. You have to hand it to Mayo, I was one who didn’t think they would win on Saturday night last but they got stuck in from the very first whistle and Donegal didn’t know what hit them. I want to pick out two Mayo players for special mention: Paddy Durkan is a real Rolls Royce player. He was out injured for a while this year but when he is fully fit he is some asset to Mayo. He links the play brilliantly and there is never a big game that goes by that he doesn’t score two or three points from play. He reminds me of Tomas Ó Sé in his hey-day. I cannot give him any more praise than that. Andy Moran was phenomenal last Saturday again. He won every ball kicked in his direction and scored a couple of mighty points. What an inspirational player he is. Playing against Dublin is a com-

pletely different ball game for Mayo but I never thought that they could get this far in the championship. One aspect of this new condensed season is that fact that the four teams have only a week to prepare for an All-Ireland SFC semi-final which is desperately unfair. It’s like the GAA want to just get it out of the way as quickly as possible. I also support those who are bitterly opposed to the GAA selling the broadcast rights to their games to Sky TV (or any other subscription channel). Last weekend the biggest championship game of the summer was played in Castlebar yet hundreds of thousands of people were not able to see it. The GAA is a community based amateur organisation. This must not be allowed to happen again. After RTÉ, give the rights to TV3 or TG4 where people can see the matches.

Rossies end 2019 campaign on a high

Mayo v Dublin on Saturday at 5 pm Mayo have defied the odds so many times in recent years it would be very foolish to write them off together. They certainly reserved their best championship performance of the year for last Saturday night’s showdown against Donegal. A lot of their top players are back from injury and they have an inner belief that is hard to compete against. However, they are moving up several steps in class this weekend. Jim Gavin may have left a lot of his best players at home last weekend but he won’t be doing that on Saturday. Mayo followers will be delighted that I am going to tip against them again but I cannot see Mayo (or anyone else) coming near this Dublin team. The Dubs will pull away in the final quarter. Prediction: Dublin

Mayo and Dublin will face each other in this Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC Semi-Final at Croke Park.

Brian Stack scored two goals as Roscommon overcame Cork in the final round of the Super 8s at Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday.

Tyrone v Kerry on Sunday at 3.30 pm

Sporting Snippets…

This is a very tight call. At various times this summer Kerry looked by far the most likely team to knock Dublin off their perch, but at other times they have looked a very ordinary side. They have a class attacking unit but doubts persist over their defence. Tyrone may not be in Dublin’s class but they have the players and the system to stifle Kerry. There will not be any more than a couple of points in it but I fancy Tyrone to make it a repeat AllIreland final pairing this year. Prediction: Tyrone

The English Premier League season begins again this coming weekend and nothing has happened over the summer to suggest that the power base will lie with any clubs other than Manchester City and Liverpool. There is been a lot of chat about Manchester United but I remain to be convinced. Shane Lowry and Tiger Woods are back playing golf this week as the Fed-Ex Cup play-offs begin on the PGA Tour. Meanwhile, it’s hard to believe it but the preparations for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup moves up several steps when Ireland take

So the Super 8s have come to an end for another year. I couldn’t make it to Cork because of a family event, but I was able to see the game and although it was played in very poor conditions and in front of a paltry crowd, it was very enjoyable and the effort of both sides could not be questioned. Roscommon started badly but they recovered and were always in the hunt. The last time the Rossies were in Pairc Ui Runn they scored four goals and they did it again on Sunday and I was very impressed with Brian Stack who, apart from the fact he scored two fine goals, played really well and it’s good to see him back to his best form. Enda Smith was also very effective and scored the best goal of the game. Shane Killoran had another great outing at midfield and Niall Daly was doing well until he got a very harsh black card. It was certainly a far better game than “The Coma in Omagh” which I had on at the same time. I heard the Roscommon v Cork game described as the best in the Super 8s this year, and while I certainly wouldn’t go that far, it was a great way for Roscommon to end their year which overall has been a great success. It’s down to a couple of frantic weeks of club action now and hopefully in 2020 promotion back to Division One, and another crack at the Connacht championship will be on the menu.

on Italy at the Aviva Stadium this weekend. There will be intense speculation as to what starting fifteen Joe Schmidt will go with to commence his preparations. Will Jack Carty get a chance? Here in Roscommon, the final round of league games in football will be played this coming weekend. The semi-final pairings in the O’Rourke, O’Gara and Tansey Cups will be decided and it will be a final chance for club team managers to look at their teams ahead of the start of the championships the It’s hard to look beyond Manchester City and following weekend. It should be Liverpool in this season’s race for the English Premier League title. interesting!

Cork youngsters seriously impressive Just a short note about the Cork U-20 footballers. I watched the All-Ireland final against Dublin on Saturday last (a candidate for game of the year?) and they came from nine points down to sweep past a fancied Dubs team to take the title in style. What impressed me about Cork was they have a number of very big, extremely skilful and pacy players. It was the third time I saw them playing on TV this summer and they are a seriously impressive outfit. If these lads are properly looked after then Cork football will be back on top very soon.

Mixed fortunes for Ladies footballers It was a mixed weekend for Ladies Football in the county. In Ballinasloe on Saturday the minors started slowly and paid the price in the All-Ireland final against Longford although a soft penalty award against the Rossies was the deciding incident in the end. However, the sadness didn’t last long as Michael Finneran’s Intermediate ladies team turned in a splendid high-scoring display against Kildare in the AllIreland quarter-final on Sunday. Roscommon now face tournament favourites Tipperary in the semi-finals but this is a game that Roscommon can certainly win. Tipp were less than convincing in their two-point win against Clare last Sunday and Roscommon have an attack that can trouble any team left in this competition.

SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER

Someone please think of the genuine fan! THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner Remember the good old days when all our summer sporting needs were satisfied by terrestrial television? Ah, those were the days…you were even guaranteed to see

someone hammer the Dubs! Fast-forward to the advent of Sky and 24-hour rolling sports news and the summer has become a bit of a drag. Soccer fans (plastic supporters mostly) spend most of June and July on social media complaining about Sky’s fake transfer news while GAA matches are beamed across the world (supposedly), and salt of the earth supporters in this country are (at times) forced to make do with highlights on Sunday night. The sale of broadcasting rights to Sky in 2014 indicated that the GAA was set to become every-

In the sporting diary .... Campbell and McEnroe Cups The Ballinlough & District Angling Association will host the Campbell Cup along with The McEnroe Cup for junior anglers on Lake O Flynn this Sunday (11th). Fishing commences at 11 am and the weigh-in will take place at 5 pm. The usual rules apply. Bag limits must be observed and life jackets must be worn by all competitors. Both cups will be awarded to the angler with the heaviest trout on the day. Refreshments will be available in Campbell’s Lake O Flynn Lounge afterwards. The club would like to thank the Campbell and McEnroe families for their continued generous sponsorship of the competitions. The club would also like to congratulate Michael Egan on his recent retirement from Inland Fisheries Ireland and to wish him health and happiness in his retirement. The club would also like to thank him for his help and cooperation since its foundation.

thing it once detested about soccer. It would appear that grassroots players and supporters have since been unceremoniously brushed aside to make way for what headquarters hoped would be a slick, new package, and as a result everything now revolves around the uncompetitive Super 8s. While RTÉ pundits seem to be making a habit of rambling monologues, it was difficult to disagree with Joe Brolly, Tomás Ó Sé and others last weekend as they criticised the decision which has subsequently meant that many are unable to enjoy classic games

such as Donegal v Mayo. The GAA is part of our national identity and the community is supposed to be part of its ethos, however in the last few years it seems as though the association is trying to shrug off its ‘Irishness’ in favour of something more ‘marketable’. The evidence certainly suggests that those who follow Gaelic games are now – unofficially at least – viewed as customers rather than supporters by the GAA, and that is something that was sadly highlighted once again this week by the Dublin v Mayo ticket fiasco.

There’s a growing belief that genuine GAA fans are being shortchanged by the association.

Congratulations to Brusna Inn who retained the Declan Frain Memorial Cup at Ballaghaderreen FC recently. The annual fivea-side competition saw 14 teams take part including teams from the Syrian and Pakistani communities and the tournament’s first all-female team ‘Shamrock Babes’. St. Coman’s’ Michael Egan had two comfortable wins in the 60x30 Junior ‘B’ Connacht Championship last week. On Wednesday, he beat Mayo’s Shane Scott 21-3, 21-5 in St. Coman’s and last Friday he overcame Martin Brannigan on a scoreline of 21-1, 21-3 in Collooney, Co. Sligo. Michael now faces Galway’s Jamie Kelly in the Connacht final this weekend. Lisacul’s Denis Creaton was leading Mayo’s Patrick Murphy by 20-13 in their 60x30 Junior Connacht quarter-final last Wednesday, however, he struggled to put away his opponent who came back to take the first 21-20. Murphy played the second like a new man and killed some great balls on his way to a surprisingly easy 21-6 win.

Last Sunday’s inclement weather meant that day two of Paul Cuttle’s Captain’s Prize was unplayable. Therefore, results were allocated on the results of day one; meaning outright winner of this year’s prize was Willie Doyle with 63 nett. Thomas Farrell was runner-up with 65 and Michael Lennon third with 67. Gross went to Francie Grehan with 75 and 2nd gross was won by Dan O’Brien, also with 75. The Past Captain’s Prize, meanwhile, was won by Phelim Henry with 70 nett; Michael Waldron won the Over 55s, Brian Cleary the Beginners’ and Nathan O’Connor the Junior Prize. Elsewhere, Simon Walker’s star continues to rise following news that the Roscommon junior has been selected for the Irish Boys’ team which will take part in this year’s Home Internationals. The Ladies’ 4 Ball Better Ball winners were Noreen O’Grady and Aileen McConn with 49 points. The recent 9-hole competition was won by Rosemary O’Brien with 19 points while the Senior Ladies’ competition was won by Evelyn Bruen. The Senior Men’s competition was won by Frank Kerins. Concannon again The Hollywood Bar Superleague continued last Friday with some top finishing on the night from Krzyszstof Wesolowski (100), Martin Fleming (100 and 113), Mick Egan (116) and Ciaran Hickey (120). However, it was Paul Carton who came out tops on the night with an impressive 151 finish under pressure in completing a 15-dart leg. Following an unbeaten run in the group stages, Carton would go on to contest Friday’s final against the in-form Thomas Concannon. It was a familiar story however as Concannon eased to a 3-0 victory. The Superleague continues this Friday night with first darts at 9 pm. Contact David on 086-0823180 for more details.

Clinical Ladies set up Royal appointment TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Championship Quarter-Final

ROSCOMMON

2-18

KILDARE

2-10

Twelve months after their Croke Park aspirations were crushed by Meath at Dr. Hyde Park, Roscommon will have the chance to make amends after a comfortable victory over Kildare last Sunday set Michael Finneran’s on a collision course with the Royal County. That game is set for Saturday week (August 17th) at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny and on the form Roscommon showed last weekend in Kinnegad, they’ll feel that they have every chance of upsetting the odds and securing a Croke Park appearance for themselves. Defensively there are still some issues to be ironed out – Kildare fullforward Molly Price enjoyed a very productive afternoon and there were far too many occasions when it looked as if the Lilywhites were able to carve open opportunities by running straight down the middle of the field –

but up front Roscommon are moving very well, breaking tackles and creating overlaps in doing so. A superb team move that started with a stunning block down from Siobhán Tully ended with Rebecca Finan bursting past two defenders and setting up Aimee O’Connor for the game’s opening goal after 13 minutes, and Finneran would have been the much happier manager coming up to half time as his side kept their noses in front, despite playing into a strong breeze. That all changed in the 25th minute when Price set up Ellen Dowling for a Kildare goal, and from the restart teenage centre forward Neasa Dooley collected possession and rifled the ball into the roof of the net for a second green flag. Roscommon’s response was exemplary however, as they settled into their work and got back on level terms by half-time.

Good angles of running and support play around the middle third was key and with captain Sinéad Kenny doing a lot of the hard defensive work, that freed up Laura Fleming to drive at the Kildare defence and create some good openings. Fleming, Róisín Wynne and Finan (twice) all pointed to draw the sides level at half time, 2-5 1-8, and with the wind set to favour them, Roscommon were well-set to drive on and win. It took them some time to open up a gap, but points from Siobhán Tully, Finan and Jenny Higgins, not long after her introduction, put some daylight between the sides. Kildare continued to try and run the ball through the Roscommon back line and they carved out occasional chances, with Lauren Murtagh and Molly Price both on the scoresheet at various stages, but their trump card in the first half was their ability to pin Roscommon deep into their own half on the kick-out. Now that Helena Cummins was able to get a bit more distance on her restarts, Roscommon were better able to use the full width of the pitch and create

space, and they enjoyed a far greater share of possession. Still, it wasn’t until the 55th minute that their ticket into the last four of the TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Championship was stamped. Laura Fleming set the move in motion by winning a Kil-

dare kick-out on the right wing, Siobhán Tully took two defenders out of the game with a jinking run and her handpass across the goal was at a perfect height for Jenny Higgins to leap off the ground over her marker and touch it into the far corner of the net.

Late scores from Finan and Tully added further flourish to the scoreboard, and proved that while it’s been a comparatively easy run to the last four for the team, they certainly won’t lack for form or confidence when they step up in class against Meath in nine days’ time.

Camógs can seal All-Ireland final berth Liberty Insurance Premier Junior Camogie Semi-Final Roscommon v Limerick at Cusack Park, Ennis on Saturday at 4 pm  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon’s Junior Camogie side is one step away from an All-Ireland final appearance in Croke Park when they face Limerick in the semi-final on Saturday. When the sides met in the league earlier in the year there was only a point between the teams so Roscommon are confident that they can win this time around. Roscommon manager Karol Collins is very happy with the response that he has got from the Roscommon players and is confident that his charges can get to that final in Croke Park. “Preparations have gone really well. We have lost Niamh Farrell (injured) and Niamh Watson (away) and those are huge

blows for us but the rest of the girls are determined to make up for those losses. “I have been very impressed by this group of Roscommon girls. They have done everything we have asked of them and I couldn’t expect any more. There is a huge prize for the winners on Saturday and this group deserves to get to a final in Croke Park for all the work they have put in. If we play to our potential on the day we can win it. It would be a huge boost to the game in Roscommon if we can get to the final,” concluded the Oranmore man. This is a very well coached and well prepared Roscommon team and they know that they can win this semi-final if they can perform on the day. A final date beckons. Prediction: Roscommon

The semi-final line-ups in the county football leagues will be decided this weekend. In the O’Rourke Cup (Division One), St. Faithleach’s are already in the final but there are a

number of clubs who could qualify for the semi-final. Two out of Clann na nGael, St. Brigid’s and Pádraig Pearses look the more likely to qualify while Boyle and Roscommon Gaels have an outside chance.

Hurling Championship reaches knockout stages Kepak Roscommon SHC Round-up Athleague on top Athleague 3-12 Tremane 0-11 Two goals in injury-time flattered Athleague but they were the best side on the day. Tremane, who had already booked their place in the semi-finals, were the better side in the opening half and quickly went into a five-point lead but Robbie Fallon’s goal before half-time saw Athleague ahead by a point at the break. It was good contest for most of the second period and Athleague were able to keep their noses in front. Late goals from Cian Murray and Robbie Fallon saw them home comfortably but Tremane won’t be too perplexed by the outcome as there are far bigger fish to fry later in this championship. Scorers - Athleague: R Fallon (2-4), C Murray (1-2), B McGahon (0-2), P Flaherty, D Flaherty, E Flanagan (0-

Daly’s late show! Pádraig Pearses 2-12 Oran 0-16 Pearses scored a late, late goal from Keelan Daly to snatch a dramatic win against Oran in this well-contested match. Jerry Fallon was deadly accurate from frees for Oran but Leon Fehily’s goal meant that Oran only lead by a point at half-time 0-9 to 1-5. Oran looked the more likely winners when they led by three points deep into injury-time but points from Shane Naughton and Oisin Kelly were followed by that late strike from Keelan Daly, which proved decisive, and Pearses had snatched a win from the jaws of defeat.

Scorers - Pearses: L Feehily (1-1), A Feehily and S Naughton (0-3) each, K Daly (1-0), M Comerford, J Donoghue, E Costello, J Curley and O Kelly (0-1) each. Oran: J Fallon (0-12), G Keenan (0-2), K Whyte, and E Kenny (0-1) each. This weekend, the two Kepak SHC quarter-finals will take place on Saturday evening in Athleague. At 5.30 pm it’s the clash of champions Athleague who meet Oran. If Athleague can get their best team out on the field they may have just enough to deny Oran. Then at 7 pm, St. Dominic’s take on Pádraig Pearses. Dominic’s have shown some good form at times in this championship but they will have to be at their best to deny Pearses who are the choice to come out with a narrow victory.

Late penalty ends Minors’ comeback LGFA All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ Final

LONGFORD

2-9

ROSCOMMON

2-5

 SEAMUS DUKE

In a tight game of such importance major incidents are always crucial and Roscommon will point to the controversial award of a penalty to Longford with eight minutes remaining at Duggan Park in Ballinasloe last Saturday as a major turning point in this AllIreland Minor ‘B’ Final. With Roscommon leading by a point, Longford’s Lauren McGuire’s route to goal was stopped by Megan McKeon and referee Kevin Corcoran blew immediately to award a penalty. It looked a harsh judgement, and to rub salt in the wound, Corcoran brandished a yellow card to McKeon which reduced Roscommon to 13. Ciara Healy tucked away the penalty and Longford kicked on to take the title. Roscommon manager Ollie Colgan couldn’t hide his disappointment at full-time.

“I know it’s a very tough job and it is straight after the game, but it all hinged on one decision (the penalty) and at best it was a controversial decision. The linesperson beside us said it was no penalty but the man in the middle is all that counts. It gave them the lifeline they needed, they were struggling up to that, and if we had got one or two more scores we would have been all right. But hats off to them, they did their work in the first half. We were slow to get into the game and that’s what cost us in the end,” he said. In the cold light of day, when the Roscommon management and players pick the bones out of this, they’ll know their poor first-half performance cost them dearly. Their stirring revival in the second half was hugely impressive but overall Longford were marginally the better side. In front of a big crowd, it was Longford who started best. With Orla Nevin, Grace Shannon, Ciara Healy and Clodagh Lohan outstanding, they had the lion’s share of possession and were 1-2 to no score up after ten minutes. Deirbhle Rooney and Ciara Healy (free) points were followed in the 10th minute by a tremendous Clodagh Lohan goal following a superb Longford move. Roscommon did get into the game after that but some poor shooting and the fact that four balls were kicked into the Longford goalkeeper’s hands didn’t help their cause. Aimee O’Connor opened the Roscommon account with a free in the 17th minute and two minutes later Ellen Irwin fired over a super long-range point from 35 metres. But Longford always looked in control in that first half and further points from Grace Shannon and Ciara Healy saw the gap out to five once again. Kate Harrington pointed for Roscommon in the 24th minute after a fine team move, but further Longford points from Clodagh Lohan, Deirbhle Rooney and Lauren McGuire

stretched the margin to seven. Roscommon did have a late goal chance but Oonagh Kelly’s effort was well saved by Riane McGrath. At half-time Longford had a handsome seven-point lead: 1-7 to 0-3. Ollie Colgan was left to rue a tough opening half. “We would have preferred if our first half performance was better, whether the occasion got to us or something I don’t know. We hoped it wouldn’t, we prepared for it, maybe it was just Longford were doing their job very well. They man-marked, they doublemarked our key players and it was tough going,” he said. Roscommon needed a reaction on the resumption and they got one. In the 34th minute Aimee O’Connor was probably shooting for a point from 30 metres, but the ball looped over Riane McGrath and into the net. A minute later Roscommon captain O’Connor pointed a 25-metre free. Suddenly there were only three points in it with Roscommon subs Micheala Keogh and Lauren Shanagher making major contributions to their revival. In the 41st minute Shanagher was in on goal but when her shot was blocked by Longford goalkeeper McGrath, Oonagh Kelly was quickest to react and she fired the rebound to the net to level the score. Roscommon’s tails were up, and Aimee O’Connor fired over a great point in the 48th minute to see her side into the lead for the first time. But it was all to turn sour in those final minutes. Kate McPhillips had been shown a yellow card in the 46th minute and when Megan McKeon was sidelined after the penalty incident, not alone were Roscommon down by two points, they were down two players as well. The spot-kick incident seemed to knock the stuffing out of Roscommon and Longford finished with points from Grace Shannon and Lauren McGuire. Saoirse Wynne has a fantastic game at full-back for Roscommon while Sheena Kilroe was effective at midfield. The loss of Sarah McVeigh through injury after only eight minutes was severe. Aimee O’Connor and Oonagh Kenny battled away up front and subs Lauren Shanagher and Miceala Keogh were very impressive but it was not Roscommon’s day. While manager Colgan highlighted the six-week break between the Connacht Championship and the AllIreland series as a major hindrance in their bid to secure national silverware, he was upbeat about the future. “It would have been lovely to win an All-Ireland minor title but there’s a lot of good work going on in the county, these girls will now go into an U-20 development squad along with last year’s minors, it’s important to keep these girls playing football. The main aim is to get Roscommon up playing senior football at adult level and these girls have a big part to play in that,” he said. Meanwhile, Longford manager, Carol Leonard-Manning, was understandably proud of her charges. “You always know in ladies football

that you’re going have patches of a game when you won’t play well and we certainly didn’t make the start we wanted to after half-time. With this group we’ve been down in games before, they never drop their heads, they fight to the very end and that’s what

wins All-Irelands. “The penalty changed the game, but if it had been played on, you don’t know what would have happened. The penalty could have been given later, if she wasn’t taken down it could have been a goal”.

All-Ireland SFC Super 8s (Round 3): Roscommon 4-9 Cork 3-9

Rossies blitz Rebels for first Super 8s win  DAIRE WALSH

Roscommon produced a second-half goal blitz at Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday to end their Super 8s Group Two campaign on a high. Following earlier defeats to Tyrone and Dublin, Anthony Cunningham’s side were already out of contention for a semi-final spot. The Leesiders had suffered a similar fate, but the county had received a much-needed boost in the form of the previous day’s stunning AllIreland U-20 success at the expense of a fancied Dublin side. However, the Rossies were in no mood to prolong their celebrations and triumphed in a Super 8s encounter at the sixth time of asking. While it was effectively a ‘dead rubber’ affair for both teams, the Connacht champions finally shook off a significant and long-standing hoodoo. In their ten previous All-Ireland quarterfinal matches, the primrose and blue had failed to register a single win. 2017’s thrilling draw with Mayo was surrounded by nine defeats, so the value of Sunday’s victory cannot be overstated. Roscommon looked set for further heartache when a fired-up Cork stormed into a 1-2 to no score lead inside the

opening three minutes of the contest. After he expertly broke the deadlock with a tricky free, Luke Connolly intercepted Darren O’Malley’s subsequent short kick-out. He passed inside to full-forward Mark Collins, who rattled the net with a powerful right-footed effort. Another Connolly free supplemented this strike as the Rebels sought to establish a firm foothold amidst torrential rain. The early signs were ominous for Roscommon, though they eventually settled into a more familiar stride. Conor Cox had 0-24 to his name in five championship appearances prior to this game and he found the target either side of an Enda Smith point. Even though James Loughrey was keeping close tabs on the Listowel Emmett’s man in open play, his placed-ball accuracy played a key part in Roscommon’s early revival. He traded frees with Connolly to leave them two points in arrears at the end of the opening quarter. Cox had an ideal opportunity to narrow the gap to a single point on the stroke of 20 minutes, only to drop his shot into the arms of Cork netminder Micheál Martin – son of the Fianna Fáil leader of the same name. Cork duly punished this miss at the opposite end, adding points through Kevin

Enda Smith was on target with a terrific goal against Cork last Sunday in Pairc Ui Rinn.

O’Driscoll and Ruairi Deane to offer themselves a commanding buffer once more. Nevertheless, determined to make the most of their final competitive outing for 2019, Roscommon restored parity just shy of the half-hour mark. After Cox recorded his fourth free of the half, Cathal Cregg released the raiding Brian Stack for a clinical three-point finish. Their elation was short-lived though, as the imposing Connolly punched home Eoghan McSweeney’s cross-field delivery off Cork’s resulting attack. This was a setback for the visitors so soon after Stack’s intervention, but they enjoyed a productive end to the opening period. Shane Killoran kicked over at the end of a memorable run and Cox brought his personal haul to five points from close-range. A flashpoint in stoppage-time led to black cards for Cork’s Paul Kerrigan and Roscommon’s Niall Daly – they were respectively replaced by John O’Rourke and Colin Compton on the restart. While staring into a slender deficit at the break (2-5 to 1-7), the Rossies swiftly levelled matters courtesy of Andrew Glennon’s free. They then went a full 14 minutes without a score and, in that time, Collins added a brace of frees to give Cork some breathing space. In comparison to the lively first half, the game was struggling to catch fire in the third quarter. That all changed on 52 minutes, however, when Roscommon hit the front for the very first time. At the tail end of a patient move, Glennon’s telling pass put Stack in the clear for his second goal of the contest. In the aftermath of the St. Brigid’s attacker’s latest major, there was a skirmish featuring several players from both sides. Following extensive consultation, referee Noel Mooney issued six yellow cards – evenly spread out on either side. There was a three-minute delay before the play resumed, but this did little to halt the Rossies’ march. The industrious Enda Smith continued to drive forward and got the goal his performance deserved with a smooth strike into the right-corner of the net. To Cork’s credit, they delivered an immediate response – Loughrey ghosting into the far square for his second goal in as many games. The willingness to go for the jugular at both ends of the field was evident throughout and it came as no surprise when goal number seven arrived in the final minute of normal time. A sweeping move initiated by O’Malley saw the ball arrive into the hands of Killoran and his composed finish pushed Roscommon to within touching distance of a fourth championship win of the campaign. Substitutes Stephen Sherlock and John O’Rourke raised white flags in injurytime to keep Cork in the frame, but it was a Roscommon replacement – Donie Smith – who clinched the spoils for his side with a point on the break. This meant that Roscommon claimed third spot in the group and while Tyrone and Dublin progress to this weekend’s last four, the Connacht champions will be eager to build on this positive display when the action gets back underway in 2020.

Conor Cox again proved a handful, scoring five points from the placed ball as Roscommon proved too strong for Cork in Pairc Ui Rinn.

All-Ireland SFC Super 8s (Round 3): Roscommon 4-9 Cork 3-9

Cunningham happy to finish on a high  DAIRE WALSH

Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham cut a satisfied figure following his side’s gutsy Super 8s victory over Cork at a blustery Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday afternoon. After the disappointment of back-toback defeats at the hands of Tyrone and Dublin - not to mention their three

Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham was pleased to finish this year’s Super 8s campaign with a win following his side’s victory over Cork at Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday.

straight reversals in last year’s group there was a clear determination within the squad to end 2019 on a positive note. “We targeted a win this weekend. We really wanted this year’s campaign to finish with a first Super 8s win for Roscommon. We were questioned in the last few weeks by a few people. Were we up for the Dublin match and other matches? This set of players set out at

the start of the year and finished off today with what they wanted, which was a win in the Super 8s,” Cunningham remarked. Despite the contest effectively being a ‘dead rubber’ (both Cork and the Rossies were out of contention for a semifinal spot), the two sides left no stone unturned in their quest for a win. loran’s 69th minute finish that swung the tie in Roscommon’s favour. While clearly disappointed that his team’s campaign has now drawn to a conclusion, Cunningham believes his debut season at the helm has ultimately proven to be a success. “We are disappointed, obviously, that it wasn’t a match that put us through to an All-Ireland semi-final. We have to take the harsh lessons of the Tyrone defeat. The panel and players will take that on board. “Today was significant because questions were asked in the last few weeks. Questions such as, have we moved on? For us, unbeaten in the Connacht Championship, a very good performance against Tyrone, albeit a bit unlucky. Today we wanted to back those performances up. In very tough conditions away from home, to come out of it with a win, we are very happy”. Indeed, torrential rain descended upon the Leeside venue for the majority of the game - leading to some understandable handling errors on both

sides. Nevertheless, there was also an abundance of quality football on display and this is something that Cunningham was keen to highlight. “We haven’t seen rain all summer and to get those conditions today. The ball was really greasy. Very, very hard to hold the ball, but a lot of good play. Great scores and great goals,” Cunningham said. It was also a day that saw referee Noel Mooney kept on his toes, the Cavan official having issued an astonishing 13 yellow cards and three black cards over the course of the proceedings. Cunningham believes the conditions had a part to play in this, but was thrilled with the physical approach his charges brought to the game. “I think with the conditions, lads were flying into tackles. We wanted that really, we wanted to win our own ball. We’ve seen that over the weekend, you’ve really got to commit in the heat of championship and conditions today led to a lot of clumsier tackles than normal,” he added.
