Have you thought about an
Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is not just a job. It is about learning skills that you can use for life, earning a decent wage and getting qualified at the same time. If you are aged 16 or over and live in England you can do an apprenticeship. If you didn’t get a grade 4 (or C) in your maths and English GCSEs, you will study functional skills as part of your apprenticeship. This means you can achieve a qualification in maths and English as well as your main apprenticeship qualification. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 16-18 is now £4.15 per hour from April 2020. This is the minimum an employer can pay by law, but many employers will pay more than this. Apprenticeships are available in many different career areas including IT, hairdressing, plumbing, construction trades, motor vehicle, childcare, catering, business administration and more.
Not quite ready for an Apprenticeship? Why not consider doing a traineeship first? A Traineeship is a flexible education and training programme with work experience. Try various types of jobs and become ‘work ready’ while improving your English and maths. The programme can last up to 6 months and although you don’t get paid, it will look great on your CV and you may be given expenses for things like travel and meals. If you’ve been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship or other job due to lack of skills and/or experience, then a traineeship could be for you. Your YES Employability Adviser can help you to find the right traineeship and arrange for you to visit providers to find out more.
See pages 7-8 for the Traineeships available in Brighton & Hove

(Note: Apprenticeships should be registered with the UK Register of Learning Providers)
