We celebrate some of our clients’ achievements…

Congratulations Mahum on becoming

The Young Craftsman of the Year! at Camelia Botnar Mahum started training at Camelia Botnar last year and made this stunning dresser which has now won an award and she has become the Young Craftsman of the Year! We are all so proud of Mahum and her achievements we just had to tell you! – comment from staff at Camelia Botnar. Here are Mahum’s own words about her time at college: “When I first started Camelia Botnar I had no experience in carpentry and by coming to the foundation I found a trade that I really enjoy and can see my future in. I didn't do well at school and this place has helped me gain qualifications and a great trade. It has also helped me with my people skills and helped me become more independent on a general everyday basis. I feel like I have come so far in the space of a year thanks to this place” If you would like to find out more about Camelia Botnar or any other local opportunities please get in touch with us here at the Youth Employability Service!

Kirollis is a young man with Autism who had been working with an adviser from the Youth Employability Service. Together with his adviser, they explored suitable provision and Kirollis went on to do volunteering and a traineeship. More recently however, in partnership with Supported Employment and the NHS Trust, Kirollis has gone on to do an eight week work experience placement at Brighton General Hospital. He impressed them so much that it has now led to a paid role as an administrator. From everyone at the Youth Employability Service, well done Kirollis! Here’s what Kirollis had to say about his experience: “I was always interested in working in an office because I enjoy using computers. My line manager

and the rest of the staff at the NHS have been very supportive. If I need to check something that I am not sure about, they will help me out. I am happy that there is an organisation out there like the Trust that gives people with disabilities a chance to find work. If anyone out there is looking for a job I would recommend them to work for Sussex Community NHS FoundationTrust”. Frequently asked questions about Apprenticeships: What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are a brilliant way of gaining qualifications and work experience. As an employee you can earn as you learn and gain practical skills from the work place that will really help you in your future career. What are the entry requirements for an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships have different entry requirements, however the most important requirements are: - You must be living in England and be aged 16+ - You must not be in full time education. - If you don’t have good grades in GCSE English and maths you will need to take a literacy and numeracy test. Do I get paid during an Apprenticeship? Yes, you do. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 16-18 is £3.50 per hour (and for those aged 19 or over in the first year of an apprenticeship) after that you are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. However, many employers pay more than this. As skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages; research has shown that apprentices earn an average of £170 net pay per week. For more information about the range of jobs available through apprenticeships, look at the websites below or contact the Youth Employability Service.
