Frequently asked questions about Apprenticeships: What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are a brilliant way of gaining qualifications and work experience. As an employee you can earn as you learn and gain practical skills from the work place that will really help you in your future career. What are the entry requirements for an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships have different entry requirements, however the most important requirements are: - You must be living in England and be aged 16+ - You must not be in full time education. - If you don’t have good grades in GCSE English and maths you will need to take a literacy and numeracy test. Do I get paid during an Apprenticeship? Yes, you do. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 16-18 is £3.50 per hour (and for those aged 19 or over in the first year of an apprenticeship) after that you are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. However, many employers pay more than this. As skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages; research has shown that apprentices earn an average of £170 net pay per week. Traineeships are pre-apprenticeship programmes aimed to be a stepping stone to an apprenticeship or job. They provide work experience as well as maths and English qualifications. The work placements are unpaid but expenses may be available. Traineeship vacancies are also advertised here: www.apprenticeships.gov.uk

Traineeships Plumpton College offer Traineeships in the following subjects:

Agriculture Animal Care Butchery  Environmental Conservation Machinery  Floristry Forestry  Horticulture Wine  Equine An ideal opportunity for unemployed young people aged 16-24 who want to get an apprenticeship or job but don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience. Gain work experience as well as English and maths qualifications to help become work ready. Plumpton will help find a suitable work experience placement whilst you are on this programme. Duration: Can last from six weeks up to six months. 2-3 days per week work experience in the chosen industry. 1 day per week in college covering employability skills and functional skills maths and English if required. Start: Start at any time - roll on roll off programme through the academic year. 16-19 bursary funds available to apply for. Traineeships do not affect current benefits i.e. JSA and ESA.

The Bridge Community Learning Centre Lucraft Road, Brighton BN2 4PN ** Skills Training offer Traineeships in Brighton and Hove ** If you are ready for work but need to build skills experience and confidence first, then a traineeship could be right for you. A traineeship with Skills Training includes: Work Experience in a range of career areas to choose from such as Warehousing, Customer Service, Retail, Reception/Administration and Hospitality. Recent employers include The Grand Hotel, Bestway and Halfords! Functional Skills All the traineeships include the chance to work towards English and maths. In addition, Child Benefit can also continue to be paid to parent/carer of those living at home, or you can continue to receive benefits including JSA. A weekly bus pass will be provided and a bursary of up to £25 per week is available for those eligible. Learners will also receive advice on interview tips and how to improve your CV

Smart Training and Recruitment are working in partnership with the British Heart Foundation and offer Traineeships at British Heart Foundation stores in the local area. Work placement positions are available in Retail, Administration and Warehousing.      

Traineeships with Tempus Training Tempus provides 8 week traineeship placements in Business Administration that will improve your CV & can lead onto an apprenticeship or a permanent job. Trainees will spend 2 weeks doing employability skills, 6 weeks in a work placement and can continue to claim ESA/ JSA/ Universal Credit whilst on the programme. How long? 8 week course Where? STUDY Programmes Flexible study programmes at Entry and Level 1 for 16-18 year olds to help develop skills, confidence and independence in preparation for work, an apprenticeship or further education. Learners will be supported to improve their English and maths and this will lead them to receiving Functional Skills qualifications in English, Maths and ICT (Entry, Level 1 and Level 2).

Learn practical skills and gain accredited qualifications in small friendly groups. Gain confidence and skills needed for a future in a range of vocational areas. Learners will be helped on to a smooth transition into employment or further studies. Learners can also study photography along with functional skills. Bursaries are available for help with travel and food if eligible. Level 2 Endeavour Programme also offered which includes City & Guilds Level 2 Employability and work experience with local employers.

Albion in the Community are offering an exciting opportunity for 16 to 18year old boys and girls to play Futsal or in an 11 a-side combined with an education programme with the football club; allowing you to study for a Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Sport or Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) as well as playing the game you love for Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club Futsal Scholarship: 8 hours futsal training alongside eight hours of academic lessons working towards either a Level 2 or Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sports qualification. The team competes in the Football League Trust South East League alongside the likes of Chelsea and Crystal Palace. 11-a-side: Based around the more traditional form of the game, our 11-a-side programme combines studying towards a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport while developing your football skills. The team play in the PLFA Development League against the likes of Chelsea, Portsmouth, Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Watford and train three times a week. Both programmes benefit from highly qualified coaches and players and are also given guidance and support by Brighton and Hove Albion legends Guy Butters and Danny Cullip. A BTEC with Albion in the Community is an excellent first step on the way to a career in the sports industry and participants on our courses have gone on to study at University, receive football scholarships abroad and be given trials at a host of professional football clubs.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT activities The Military Preparation College is a great introduction for those who want to succeed in a career within uniform services – from the Armed Forces, Fire Services or Police service. At least 50% of each and every day is spent doing physical exercise and learning outdoors. You will work towards a Level 2 Diploma in Employability and the Level 2 Diploma for Entry into Uniformed Services. You can also study functional skills qualifications in English and maths if needed. The National Citizen Service (NCS) will be running in Brighton & Hove again this year. NCS is a once in a lifetime experience for 16 and 17 year olds running in the Summer holiday. Plan and take part in a local community project building skills for work and life. Also includes an amazing short trip away and leisure activities. NEW OPPORTUNITY FROM ALBION IN THE COMMUNITY We are now offering a great opportunity to develop valuable employability skills whilst receiving support from Albion in the Community to progress into employment or work experience.

EMPLOYABILITY PROGRAMME: A flexible roll-on-roll-off programme for 16-24 year olds that allows you to learn and develop. Run over 2 days a week (10-4) at the American Express Community Stadium, Falmer, and this course is designed to boost your employability skills and will help:  Develop your interview confidence and technique  Build a CV  Get ready for your first days at work  Develop new and existing skills and qualities Over the 6 month programme you will achieve the following qualifications:  Level 1 and Level 2 Certificate in Employability Skills  Level 2 Award in Community Sports Volunteering

A local project run in several areas of Brighton and Hove, offering free, personal support for anyone aged 18+ needing some help on their journey into employment. Each internship lasts 12 weeks, giving the chance to gain a range of work related skills and valuable practical work experience whilst on temporary work placements. You will work alongside friendly, experienced staff and have your own Routes Adviser. You will also receive help with developing your customer service skills, as well as learning how to use a variety of IT packages. Interview practice and help with job search and applications is also available. FREE 12 week programme for 16-25 year olds who are looking for work. The programme will help to build confidence and motivation, develop new skills and qualifications in employment, teamwork, community skills, first aid and food hygiene. It will look great on your CV and you will have the skills and confidence to apply for work, training or a full-time course at college. On this course you’ll get the opportunity to:  go on an action packed residential week  receive useful training that employers look for & get help with your CV   complete projects in your local community   make new friends and have an amazing time!  complete a 2-week work placement of your own interest  TRAVEL IS FREE AND THERE ARE NO COURSE COSTS Next Start Dates:

Our SEEK –Starting Social Enterprise project supports people who are not in work to start up their own social enterprise and gain skills to move into other employment opportunities. Social enterprises are business that trade to tackle social problems, strengthen communities or improve their environment. They aim to generate most of their income through selling goods & services, reinvesting the majority of their profits to further their mission. Join us and discover how you can transform your vision into reality through our six-month social enterprise StartUp Programme which includes:        

1 week training course providing expert knowledge and skills to help you get started Monthly workshops to offer continued expert knowledge Creating an individual learning journey to plan your path to setting up a social enterprise A mentor who will provide one to one support throughout the programme StartUp fund of £500 4 days of work shadowing of a social enterprise CEO or Manager Peer to peer action learning sets once a month Support to engage in local business network events to help your business idea to grow

Step 1 – Check you’re eligible:     

Aged 16-18 and not in work or training (or 19 or over and not in paid work) Wanting to make a positive impact on a social or environmental issue through business Available and ready to participate in all programme activities over six months Not in paid work (not necessarily receiving benefits) Legally able to live and work in the UK

Step 2 – Tell us about your idea Applications will close on 26th April 2017 for this year. Step 3 – Get support to develop your idea If you are eligible we will give you support to develop your idea and with the application process. This will include a 6-day course to develop your ideas, build confidence, and hear from established social entrepreneurs and gain communication and digital skills before you pitch. 15 people each year will then be selected to take part in the StartUp programme. Thinking about VOLUNTEERING? Volunteering is a great opportunity to make a difference; give back to your community, meet new people, get new experiences, get a sense of achievement and make a difference to other people’s lives, feel a part of something great; all while gaining valuable skills and experiences and adding something great to your CV! Anything from a few hours to several months there could be something for you!

Volunteering at Albion in the Community (AITC) offers a Level 2 qualification and provides skills that will be useful in any employment sector. Working as a volunteer within an organisation you will gain an understanding of volunteering and voluntary organisations. In addition, you will develop valuable employability skills and access ongoing support. This course is available to young people aged 16-24.

Volunteering is easy. It’s about giving your time to do something useful, without getting paid (although expenses may be paid). In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent. It should also be fun! The range of opportunities is huge. Whatever skills and experience you have there is something that you can do. Millions of people in this country already volunteer, but many more are needed. So use the DO-IT database to search for opportunities in your area- get out there and Do-it! There is also information about volunteering abroad!
