Have you thought about an

Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is not just a job. It’s about learning skills that you’ll use for the rest of your life, earning a decent wage and getting qualified at the same time. If you’re aged 16 or older and live in England you can do an Apprenticeship. If you didn’t get a grade C (or 4) in your Maths and English GCSEs, you’ll study Functional Skills as part of your apprenticeship. This means you’ll get a Level 2 qualification in Maths and English as well as your main qualification. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 16-18 is £3.50 per hour. This is the minimum an employer can pay by law, but a lot of employers will pay more than this. In 2016 the average hourly wage for a Level 2 Apprentice was £6.69 and a Level 3 was £7.38. There are over 500 different apprenticeships available in subjects like barbering, childcare, cookery and business administration. Recent vacancies in Brighton and Hove have included: Leisure Centre Assistant, Bricklayer, Accounts Administrator, Butcher, Hairdressing, Digital Marketing and Child Care.

How do I apply for an Apprenticeship?

Here’s what some apprentices had to say about their experience:

To find an apprenticeship have a look on the National Apprenticeship Service website: www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

‘It was a big step up and way out. I'm far happier with my life - being an apprentice has opened a door for me, no doubt.’

If you haven’t already, you’ll need to create an account and start the application process. Don’t worry - it’s very simple to do! If you need further help with this, speak to your YES Employability Adviser or have a look at this guide: https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/sites/brightonhove.gov.uk/files/Guidance%20notes%20%231_0.pdf

“My apprenticeship has really helped me I have got the skills and experience that has got me into my new job, and has given me the beginning of my career”

‘Before I started my apprenticeship I was unsure what I wanted to do, but now I feel I have a couple of paths that I can pursue in the future to make a career.’
