CELEBRATING our client’s fantastic achievement! From Youth Employability Service client to Student Social Worker at the University of Sussex! We want to congratulate Steph on being offered a place at the University of Sussex. Becs, her YES Adviser, told us how proud she is of Steph for getting to where she is today. It is a reflection of her hard work and determination. Becs is certain she will make an excellent qualified Social Worker and is so excited for her. When Becs and Steph met in 2013 (for a number of different reasons) Steph hadn’t attended much of Year 10 or 11 and was worried about what she was going to do in September. Becs popped around to Steph’s house and they chatted through all the different options. They then went on college visits and interviews together and Steph decided she would like to start the Level 1 Pathways programme in Childcare at Great Brighton Metropolitan College. Since then Steph progressed on to Level 2, then 3 and this year has accepted her place at the University of Sussex to study BA (Hons) Social Work to become a qualified Social Worker. “So much has happened since Becs met you five years ago Steph and we’d like to wish you our best with university life and your future career! Well done from everyone @YES!” Steph says: “I was told that I would never be good enough to do well. My advice is to never let anybody tell you that you’re not good enough. Never let anybody tell you that you won’t do well or you’re not capable of anything. It’s people like Becs and YES that believe in young people and help us to help ourselves.”

Have you thought about an
Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is not just a job. It’s about learning skills that you’ll use for the rest of your life, earning a decent wage and getting qualified at the same time. If you’re 16 or over and live in England you can do an Apprenticeship. If you didn’t get a grade C (or 4) in your Maths and English GCSEs, you’ll study Functional Skills as part of your apprenticeship. This means you’ll get a Level 2 qualification in Maths and English as well as your main qualification. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 16-18 is now £3.70 per hour (from April 2018). This is the minimum an employer can pay by law, but a lot of employers will pay more than this. In 2016 the average hourly wage for a Level 2 Apprentice was £6.69 and Level 3 was £7.38. There are over 500 different apprenticeships available in subjects like IT, plumbing, construction, mechanics, childcare, catering and business administration. Recent vacancies in Brighton and Hove have included: Accountancy apprentice Swimming Teacher Hairdressing Light vehicle Technician – Mercedes Benz Retail Business Admin ….. plus many more!
