Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is not just a job. It is about learning skills that you’ll use for the rest of your life, earning a decent wage and getting qualified at the same time.
How do I apply for an Apprenticeship?
If you’re 16 or over and live in England you can do an Apprenticeship.

If you didn’t get a grade C (or 4) in your Maths and English GCSEs, you’ll study Functional Skills as part of your apprenticeship. This means you’ll get a Level 2 qualification in Maths and English as well as your main qualification. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 16-18 is now £3.70* per hour. This is the minimum an employer can pay by law, but a lot of employers will pay more than this. (* Will rise to £3.90 ph from April 2019)

There are over 500 different apprenticeships available in subjects like IT, hairdressing, plumbing, construction trades, motor vehicle, childcare, catering and business administration.
Not quite ready for an Apprenticeship? Why not consider doing a traineeship first? Here’s why… A Traineeship is a flexible education and training programme with work experience. You can try out various types of jobs and become ‘work ready’ while improving your English and maths (if required). The programme can last up to 6 months and although you don’t get paid, it will look great on your CV and you may be given expenses for things like travel and meals. So, if you’ve been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship or other job due to lack of skills and/or experience, then a traineeship could be for you. Your YES Employability Adviser can help you to find the right traineeship and arrange for you to visit providers to find out more.

Traineeships are pre-apprenticeship programmes aimed to be a stepping stone to an apprenticeship or employment. They provide work experience as well as maths and English qualifications. Learn ‘on the job’ through a 100-hour work placement with an employer in a sector of your choice including; Retail, Business Admin, Hospitality or Warehousing and more. Work towards qualifications in English and maths up to level 2. Access to a range of short courses including First Aid, Health & Safety and Food Hygiene.
Eligibility: Aged 16-24 and not have a level 3 or above qualification (Take to interview: CV, 1 form of ID e.g. birth certificate, bank/debit card, NI number and qualification certificates) Incentives are on offer to all learners throughout the programme and we even provide lunch. Travel support and a bursary are also available if you’re eligible.

Stringent and supportive training is offered to help learners gain essential skills for paid employment. Learn customer service, payment handling, team work, dealing with stock. Working in small classes, you will notice that your self-confidence and selfesteem will grow. Level 1 also boosts your social skills and is practical and fun and could be your steppingstone to success. If you’re interested in working in beauty, this is an excellent introductory course. It provides you with lots of practical experience, knowledge and understanding of various treatments and techniques .

The Premier League works programme offers young adults, aged 16-25, who are not in education, employment of training, the opportunity to take part in a flexible “back-to-work” programme and runs throughout the year. Focusing on developing employability, communication and teamwork skills, alongside the opportunity to undertake fitness and employability qualifications, the programme aims are to improve confidence, motivation and self-esteem in order to overcome any potential barriers to employment. Achieve the following qualifications: Level 2 Certificate in Employability Skills plus other work related qualifications.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT activities A great introduction for those who want a career within uniformed services - from the Armed Forces, Fire Services or Police service. Speciality coffee training Bloom drop-in: Free weekly coffee drop-in’s in a relaxed space to meet others, have a go at using the equipment and learn all about coffee. Taster sessions (known as ‘Bloom’) are held every Wednesday 12 - 3pm at One Church, Gloucester Place, Brighton.
Barista Introductory Course: A 4 day intensive course which covers all the foundations of being a speciality barista. Gain a certificate from the SCA (Speciality Coffee Association) which will enhance your chance of finding real paid work. Free Spring 2019 Photography Club for 14-19 year olds Photoworks and Royal Pavilion & Museums are teaming up again to offer this fantastic opportunity for young people to meet regularly, develop their camera skills, produce photographs for an exhibition and gain an Arts Award certificate. This time, activities will be inspired by a number of LGBTQ+ themed displays at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and we’re keen to attract participants who identify as LGBTQ+ or U (unsure), or their friends or family members. The programme is led by artist/facilitator Lynn Weddle and includes practical workshops, visits to exhibitions, plus talks by artists/curators. You’ll will have the opportunity to explore experimental photographic processes such as cyanotypes and camera-less photography. The programme will culminate in an exhibition of the participants’ work at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery in May/June, plus we’ll link up with BFest (Brighton Youth Arts Festival) in May. Photography Club is free of charge and cameras are provided for participants who don’t have their own.
