Have you thought about an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is not just a job. It is about learning skills that you can use for life, earning a decent wage and getting qualified at the same time. If you are aged 16 or over and live in England you can do an apprenticeship. If you didn’t get a grade 4 (or C) in your maths and English GCSEs, you will study functional skills as part of your apprenticeship. This means you can achieve a qualification in maths and English as well as your main apprenticeship qualification. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 16-18 is now £4.15 per hour from April 2020. This is the minimum an employer can pay by law, but many employers will pay more than this. Apprenticeships are available in many different career areas including IT, hairdressing, plumbing, construction trades, motor vehicle, childcare, catering, business administration and more.
Not quite ready for an Apprenticeship? Why not consider doing a traineeship first? A Traineeship is a flexible education and training programme with work experience. Try various types of jobs while improving your English and maths. The programme can last up to 6 months and, although you don’t get paid, it will look great on your CV. You may be given expenses for travel and meals etc. If you’ve been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship or other job due to lack of skills and/or experience, then a traineeship could be for you. Your YES Employability Adviser can help you to find the right traineeship and arrange for you to visit providers to find out more.
To see who offers Traineeships in Brighton and Hove go to: www.gov.uk/find-traineeship or see the Traineeship sections in this guide.
Opportunities for You! - Issue 101 - June 2020 - Page 5

www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship and
www.apprenticeships-in-sussex.com If you haven’t already, you will need to create an account and start the application process. Your YES Employability Adviser will be able to help with this.
New bus ticket discount for apprentices Apprentices can now get up to 25% student discount off many Brighton & Hove bus tickets. To get the discount apprentices should contact Brighton & Hove Buses on Tel: 01273 886200. (You may need to show enrolment/confirmation letter or student ID card).
