Rosecrance Berry Campus Newsletter Date: Nov 2015

This October we celebrated our third annual trunk or treat. Every year I continue to be amazed at the efforts you go to decorating your offices, dressing up elaborately, and spending your time helping out the children and families that attend. We had well over one hundred children come through, combine that with their parents and siblings and we’re hitting nearly 300 people that made their way through our building in just over two hours. Most of us worked beyond the trunk or treat last week, unless you were on vacation. Over three days I spent approximately 19 hours in meetings on topics ranging from individual supervision to larger comprehensive discussions. But that two hours spent dressed as a pirate was the most invaluable two hours of the week. It is so important to remember that helping our families feel good, feel like there is a patch of fun in an otherwise difficult time, feel like they can unwind, is a truly wonderful experience. We make people feel good with an open ear and a welcoming smile. We make them feel good by letting them talk about how they are feeling. We make them feel good by dressing up in silly costumes and taking two hours out of our week to have fun. Every interaction we have affects someone else, we need to strive to make them as positive and productive as possible. Ultimately how someone feels when they leave us is going to last longer than anything we may have said. A congratulations to Jason and Joe, your last minute Lego office was selected by my own son as his favorite, job well done. Thank you for all you do,

*Staff Highlight* Joe Kreul C&F Clinician Where did you grow up and what did you want to be? I grew up in Roscoe, IL. Growing up, I always wanted to be a Scientist or a Veterinarian. Why did you choose this field? I chose this field as the result of working at a Work Study job while at University of Illinois. The position was working in local elementary schools with children with learning disabilities (most of them had ADHD) in small groups to help them catch up in academic areas they fell behind in. I felt really fulfilled doing this, and just kind of stuck with it. What do you do when you are not at Rosecrance? I don’t always have time when I’m not at Rosecrance, but when I do, I spend it with my son, family, reading, watching MTV reality shows, or playing on my computer. If you won the lottery what would you do with the money? The money would probably first pay off debt, I would buy my parents a large truck, and then I’d put a lot away for retirement/ my son. I would definitely take a very nice vacation in Europe and Australia first though. What is your most prized possession? My most prized possession is a small sterling-silver figurine of a tadpole that is growing legs. It was given to me by an old friend who has since passed, and was meant to represent the inevitability of change, and how, although it can be very scary and not within our control, can lead to amazing things and should be embraced. Interesting facts: I received my Bachelor’s Degree in 3 years, and I had a fear of goats until I was in high school as the result of one beginning to eat my coat while I was wearing it. I was very young and very freaked out, don’t judge.

Berry Best Star client diagnosed with eating disorder, started services with low self-esteem & confidence, is now feeling more confident, has a social life and a job.  Star client with frequent school suspensions has improved attendance and grades in school since starting services. 
