Handmade for Christmas

A glorious mix of unique and beautiful gifts from local designers, artists and makers Is it a gallery? Is it a gift shop? Is it a craft fair? No! It’s seven weeks of Christmas shopping heaven. ????? Is there space in your world for ????? Superb craftsmanship and design… The beautiful, quirky and unique… Local enterprise… Sitting by a roaring fire with a cup of something warming… Victorian architecture and stained glass… A chat and a laugh… Then this is most definitely the place (and time) for you. For just seven weeks each year this unassuming little Victorian Chapel metamorphoses into a glowing beacon of hope for all those who quail at the thought of the dreaded Christmas shopping trip. Dozens of very talented local elves and elfesses have been toiling all year in their workshops to make the most perfect hand-crafted gifts for those on your list (and I’m absolutely certain you deserve a pressie for yourself as well).

Handmade for Christmas is 5 years old...

5

Happy Birthday H4C!! So to celebrate the day in a proper kind of way we’ve decided to produce our very own directory of all the fabulous artists and makers. I get so many enquiries throughout the year about items that you have bought and makers you would like to contact – now you will have all the information at your fingertips. Everyone listed here would be delighted to hear from you with enquiries or orders at any time. Why not treat yourself, or a friend, to a workshop – on page 35 you will find a list of everyone who runs courses. Handmade for Christmas started as a ‘bit of a laugh’ and, although it is still an indubitably jolly affair, it has gained a seriously serious reputation for the huge diversity and the excellence of the work on display, not to mention the very warmest of welcomes. Maybe one of Dorset’s best kept secrets – shhh!! Don’t tell a soul…. Of course it would be nothing without you, the lovely customer – thank you for making H4C such a big success. We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s H4C (4th November to Christmas Eve 2017) when we shall be six… 3

And now...

Prepare to meet your makers! I have been utterly unable to find a rational way of sorting us. Alphabetically? Isn’t that what indexes are for? By discipline? But so many of us fall into several camps… By age? Wouldn’t want to be the last listed By personal beauty? Ditto Favoured way of serving potatoes? Oh yes… I have done the research!* But now we are getting ridiculous... so eventually I plumped for a gently meandering path through the disciplines, starting with textiles, draping softly into jewellery, which in its turn will melt into metal, and so on...

Quite a few exhibitors are brandsparkly-new to H4C this year – a very big welcome to them – and some are ‘originals’ (but not in the Levi’s jeans kind of way) and deserve a medal. Most are from within a 40-mile radius, but we also have a few ‘outsiders’ to add diversity. Many offer workshops. Whether new, original or in between, they are all amazingly talented and make this unique event very special indeed. I hope you will enjoy this slightly off-kilter (but still useful and informative) insight into the world of those of us who make. *Roasties come out on top! 5

FAQs What is the Workhouse Chapel? A gorgeous little hidden gem of Victorian architecture built in 1891 to serve the neighbouring Union Poorhouse. It remained in use as a place of worship until 1969, then became a tool store, then a Museum, then after a spell as Sleeping Beauty’s castle (judging by the prickly impenetrable trees that had grown up around it!) it was rescued by Rose and Bob Hatcher and is now Rose’s studio and workshop (better be careful with that spinning wheel!).

Is the Chapel open like this all year? The wonderful bright sparkly spectacle that is Handmade for Christmas is an all-too-brief seven week phenomenon, running each year from early November until Christmas Eve. Like Cinderella’s carriage, when the year’s clock strikes Christmas, it turns back into a pumpkin (metaphorically speaking).

If I need to return or exchange an item, what do I do? Don’t panic!! Contact Rose and she will help you get things sorted.

20

So what happens here for the rest of the year? 1. Rose can be found toiling away in her garret, taming her colourful wool and silk fibres into beautiful textural pictures of flowers, moorland, cliffs and beaches. Her work is usually on display, but there are no regular opening hours. Please ring to make an appointment. 2. Feltmaking classes - listed on the website. 3. Other exhibitions and events; see the back cover.

Can I hire the Workhouse Chapel for my own event/exhibition? The Chapel is not generally available for hire, but Rose is always open to new ideas, so it’s worth chatting to her about your hopes and aspirations…..

I would love to be part of Handmade for Christmas – what should I do? There is no application process for H4C - all exhibitors are here by invitation. The work is carefully selected to provide the broadest possible choice and best value for visitors. If you think your work meets H4C’s high standard of craftsmanship and design and you live within 40 miles of Sturminster Newton, please email Rose with images and details of what you do. rose@rosehatcher.co.uk | www.workhousechapel.co.uk 21

So now that you’ve got to know us all a little better, you may be interested to either confirm or confound your conclusions and suspicions. Read on for a deeper insight into our surprisingly simple lives... Exhibitors were asked to answer a very serious and in depth questionnaire. Well – the results are in; the analysis has been done… and the survey shows that the average H4C Exhibitor is: ...living in a house with curtains, eating roast potatoes (cake for afters) and drinking buckets of beer and red wine whilst watching The Big Bang Theory or Fawlty Towers, a dog at their feet, a cat on their lap, an erudite work of literature at their side. He/she has pink, easy-to-manage hair and loves sweet peas, roses, bluebells and daisies. Her/his favourite colour is blue, but, to be fair, anything goes as long as it’s not mustard yellow. If given the choice between chips and salad he/she favours salad (really?) but would probably choose both. Ditto beer and cider – oh dear! Mixing drinks again… She/he is a tad schizoid (or perhaps very well-balanced) about the Tigger/Eeyore question, only slightly favouring the Eeyore option (with just a hint of Pooh thrown in for good double entendre measure). 38

If the exhibitors could be… Animals – they would be big cats or birds Historical characters – we have suffragettes, great adventurers and heroes, artists and innovators Plants – trees (especially oak), climbing roses, honeysuckle and wild flowers. Their perfect job would be their own or anything involving creativity, conservation or animals.

They would rather be… 1. Themselves 2. On holiday 3. By the sea 4. Camping 5. Eating cake 6. Listening to skylarks

Conclusion:

Creative, ecologically sound, free-thinking (and drinking), inquisitive gentle folk who are essentially blissfully happy in their own skins (providing they’re on holiday, camping by the sea with easy access to cake). 39
