SOUTHSIDE CHURCH & COMMUNITY CAPSTONE SENIOR FALL&SPRING CONCEPT.REVIT. SOCIAL CHANGE

The Southside church of Christ meeting in Fort Worth Texas is looking to build a new building that will build community in the church and, in turn, in the community at large. The building will be a common shared place for encountering God in an intentional manor. The church is looking to build a physical place representing the incarnational Christ in the neighborhood. This design will challenge the way we live out our Christian lives, through the built environment of our meeting places. First gathering the people of God, strengthening fellowship and shared life together; and secondly, being incarnate in the surrounding community, engaging with and working for its prosperity.

When the salvific power of God is shined on his people, all other peoples are drawn toward Him and can join the feast. Gathering is necessary in order for the power of God to shine upon his people and draw all people to Him. Light will be a major conceptual theme representing the power and presence of God in the community. The gathering is represented in two concentric circles demonstrate the community at large as established by the physical environment and the gathered church community, the fellowship.


AUDITORIUM

level 1 AUDITORIUM

The first floor is designed to facilitate the connection and community between large groups of people. Being very open with little separation the space can accommodate large gatherings. Creating initial connection and building community is the main goal of the first floor. The circular arrangement of the auditorium is to create eye contact and engagement among those gathering. The open fellowship area is to create an area for people to stop and connect after entering the building and before moving on to the second floor. SCHEMATIC WORK

The second floor is designed for more intimate relationships and gatherings. It contains two quiet chapels, classrooms, a library and the staff offices. Multiple types of seating and rooms allow for many different interactions to happen. Flexible spaces and rooms allow for the use of the spaces to be easily changed. The children’s classrooms are the only gathering spaces that are separated by age and have less of the open feel in order to address security issues. A large space is dedicated for school age children to begin creating behaviors of community, with older and younger ages learning to help one another.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Human Ecosystem Theory “People interact with one another and with their environments, specifically the social, designed and natural environments. People affect their environments, and environments influence how people behave� (Guerin, 1992) A building has profound impact on the behaviors we exhibit. Sometimes it is simply the emotional and behavioral history we attach to a certain types of building and the building itself can encourage of discourage behavior. Our behavior causes us to build buildings a certain way and our assumption of behaviors define our spaces. This rut is hard to get out of and I found in my exploration of the church how easy it is to fall back to the default of what that kind of building should look like and what kind of behaviors and activities are to be enclosed. I have attempted not to simply fall back on what is working now but to really explore how we can get out of or preconceived molded ideas of the church building and stretch ourselves.

GRO

COMMUNITY CO-OP GARDEN SMALL COMMERCIAL SOPHOMORE 2013

Gro is a community garden co-op, offering residents of Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood access to the growing and harvesting of their food, and education. Gro will grow produce such as, vegetables, fruits, and herbs using aquaponics. People of the community become members for a small fee and work for credits to “buy” the harvest of their labor. Gro is a supplementary grocery aiming to build community and connections for a variety of people, bridging social groups, age and income.

Bridging is all about connections. Making connections and keeping those connections strong. Connecting people with their food and connecting people with each other. Fostering relationships is key in maintaining connection.

Bridging. Bridging the old and young, the rich and poor, the environmentally conscious and the economically conscious.

ARCHITECTS COMMERCIAL JUNIOR 2015 SPACE PLANNING & REVIT

SCM Is an architecture firm in Little Rock, Arkansas. The firm is moving into a new building being constructed in a commercial development overlooking a pond. With this move the firm hopes to create and environment more suited to their work flow and identity. Their new office offers more formal settings for their clients, and a collaborative work zone that also offers quiet head down opportunities. SCM wants to create an exciting innovative workplace to attract young talent and increase work productivity, without ignoring the preferences of their more formal clients. SCMU (6) offers a flexible meeting place for learning, growing, and celebrating with the whole staff.

The collaborative zone is located along the north windows facing the pond. This is intended to draw the employees, associates, and principals into a more collaborative environment.

Translucent acoustic control screens are suspended above each work station in the open areas, these screens can be raised and lowered though a nonelectric pulley system for the acoustic and sensory comfort of the employees. The translucent material controls sound while still allowing for natural light to permeate the space.

WELLNESS HOUSE RESIDENTIAL JUNIOR FALL REVIT. PHOTOSHOP

Emma and Andrew John and their daughter Grace, age 10, recently moved from the suburb Dexter to Ann Arbor, Michigan with their large dog Hercules. Andrew has lost over 100 pounds in the past two years for medical reasons and has caused the John’s to reevaluate their lifestyle and family goals. The John’s now incorporate activities that will keep them mentally and physically fit in to their daily life, and wish to build their new home to support this life style change. The home must be suitable for Hercules to be inside for longer durations of time during the winter months and create a family atmosphere fostering grace’s growth. Because of Andrew’s weight loss the lifestyle changes have also caused Emma to lose over 50 pounds and they hope to equip Grace to lead a happy healthy life. Therefore, they have requested that their new 2 story home be built with innovative ways of achieving an active healthy life style, with influences seen in every room of the house.

This light fixture is titled Epifaino meaning to become clearly known, to show one’s self. The fixture is intended for a library setting to be used as a task and ambient light to aid with reading difficulties, by producing a colored light filter.

A museum installation using environmental art to create feelings of stress and then transition to rest. The design uses the element of light and its qualities to amplify the texture and movement to create both rest and stress.

CONCEPT The concept behind Room 305, a student lounge, is cultivation. The room is to serve as a place for students to come relax, get out of their usual studios and share common informational resources. The lounge also needs engage students creatively.

FLL AIRPORT INTERNSHIP SUMMER 2015 CORGAN ASSOCIATES

The material selection included a broad range of material types, to suit the variety of space the CBP preforms. Some materials had to be chosen with specific CBP requirements. Pictured in the top photos are the materials for the areas passengers would interact with CBP. The bottom photo includes materials for the private office areas.

The summer of 2015 I worked on the Fort Lauderdale International Airport with Corgan. Corgan was working on the new addition, Concourse A. Making Terminal 1 International terminal. I worked heavily in security details, construction documents, and material selection for the Customs and Border Protection. Along with the CBP, I worked on, public restrooms, drawings and material selections. I also assisted on ceiling details and other parts of the construction documents.


This gate counter is preliminary design to integrate the concept of the terminal into the individual gates. The concept for the new terminal was movement as depicted by light, and the new terminal design originally featured a “V� shaped ceiling with directional strips of light, which were indicative of the passengers’ movement through the terminal. The diagonal cut light through the counter and is meant to depict the directional change of passengers as they board the plane and take off. The wood counter contrast with the cool blues, whites and greys of the terminal and brings in the natural warmth as the client requested.

The Death Pavilion is a cultural study of the Death rituals of a non western culture. The assignment was to create a structure to hold the rituals of the culture.

CHIN DEATH PAVILLION CULTURAL STUDY JUNIOR FALL REVIT.CONCEPT

PROJECT The First Baptist Church of Lewisville has decided to build a Chin community cultural center on their campus. One of the buildings is to be a place for the Chin refugees to practice their death rituals, it is necessary to provide a safe place where the family can stay with the deceased as friends and family come and visit over a multiple day period.

SPACE PLANNING 21

An angled diamond shape intersects two linear forms, functioning as a connection between the family and the visitors. It creates a focus at the point of interaction. The intersection also allows for an indirect approach to the body showing respect.


PARTI

The Puan is a traditional Chin Blanket, it showcases difficult weaving techniques and motifs of everyday life. It is used to wrap the deceased body in. Diamond shapes overlap and intersect with the woven horizontal and vertical lines.

Three levels are used to distinguish between spaces. Level 1 , ground level, is the first space you encounter upon entering. It is the lowest level in order invoke honor, when walking in one feels respectful and humbled. Level 2, is the highest level at 3 feet above ground level. It includes the family quarters and the resting place of the deceased. Ascending the stairs one is now in the closest area to their loved one, this is the place to mourn and feel close to them. Level 3, at 1’6� of the ground level, is closest to the exit. This level is still more intimate than the first but is becoming more distant than the second. It is more reverent, a placed to reflect and say goodbye.

The Branding project is a collaborative effort between teams of students in three disciplines, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Marketing. This years branding teams were challenged to create a brand for a luxury airline with a chosen corporate partner and design an air side lounge and a section of the planes cabin.
