HELLO FROM ROSEMARY Hi, if we’ve not met before then I’m delighted you are reading this and if we have: Hello and lovely to meet you again. Life with me has been busy. Well workwise, it’s been great. I’m back seeing my wonderful clients face to face and online. Still doing clean downs between sessions but sessions can be of a longer duration now if required so that is lovely and it’s just lovely to be able to see and help people fully again. I went back to being a student again in 2021 and started an amazing course called Health Creation with Dr Rosy Daniel. This is a course that I first looked at back in 2004 or 2005 and I didn’t feel I was ready for it. I thought I needed to be a practitioner for a bit longer….. 16 years later, I finally felt ready!! Normally I leap into things purely with a gut feeling and I did this time too but it just needed to be on my back burner for a long time, it’s definitely been in a slow cooker. So although it’s taken me a while to start it, I now really love it. Within the Health Creation course, 3 different programmes are available: The Cancer Lifeline Programme The Health Creation Programme and The Carers Programme All three are for very different stages in life, the Cancer Lifeline and Health

2

Creation can be intertwined as can the Carers and Health Creation or each can be done as stand alone programmes. They are very needed right now with the statistics for cancer now at 1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime…. That’s a very sobering thought and yet we can do so much to prevent it. Even if cancer does happen, we can do a lot to create the very best future for ourselves both in recovery and living our best life whilst we have cancer. That’s what Health Creation is all about, Living Your Best Life, you can read more about the awesome changes people can make on page 35. So, I am now delighted to say that I am a Health Creation Mentor and these sessions can take place beautifully online, they can happen in person also. Being online, opens the door to me helping many more people geographically. Life, has been pretty good too. My partner and our two labradors light up my life regularly. We have good fun, when out for long walks and going away on occasional weekends. Holidays have been back on the menu too with a fabulous trip to Nashville & Memphis - a very musical holiday so life is good.

Acknowledge when you might need some help and ask for it.

I hope you enjoy reading this little booklet. When you’ve finished you might know someone else who would also enjoy reading it, I would really appreciate you passing it on. If not, then hold on to it or recycle it. With love and healing thoughts,

THE NEW “NORMAL” - SEEING PEOPLE FACE TO FACE AGAIN & ALSO ONLINE The new regime at Down To Earth Health now feels quite normal to me and also hopefully, for my clients once you’ve been once or twice. Because I do health treatments, and we are in close contact, masks are still recommended at the time of writing. Obviously, if you are exempt or find it challenging, it’s not law and I will still be happy to wear mine if you prefer not to. I’m still doing my routine of 30 minutes between sessions, it allows me to do a thorough clean, change tunic etc. hopefully have a drink of water and be ready for you. So it means I can’t see as many clients in a day as I used to, now if I see 6-7 clients, 3 or 3.5 hours is spent cleaning. Sanitiser and temperature checking still happens, and I think this is a positive thing. If someone has a temperature that isn’t Covid related, it probably is still something that could be passed on to me and to other clients so it stops transmission of so many bugs. Keeping you and myself well are my top priorities. This isn’t me working in fear of my life by the way, I’m just being considerate of others. I will be very happy if we get rid of masks at some point, but I am sticking with them in close contact environments for now. My online sessions are going well too. Many of the therapies work well

online (I haven’t found a way to do massage online yet apart from Self-Care Massage!). Online has become really positive for my clients and for me. A really lovely session can be had, that is both beneficial and helpful. This is what one of my clients had to say just a while ago:

“I find my Zoom appointments with Rosemary really helpful. I always feel uplifted supported and listened to. I learn a great deal too and have begun to make great changes to my health.”

So if this is for you let me know.

You never need a “reason” to give a

TOP TO TOE: KINESIOLOGY RESTORES BALANCE TO YOUR BODY Hormones are one of the areas that I love working with when using kinesiology. PMT, Menopause, Stress-Busting, Sex Drive and Metabolism are all linked to hormones. Hormones are little chemicals that are produced in different areas of the body, often in glands and although tiny, they have a mighty effect on the body. Keeping them in balance is required for a strong, energetic, healthy, calm body. Digestion is probably the most common complaint that clients come and see me whether it be for diagnosed conditions by doctors or just feelings of being under par. Bloating, Constipation, Abdominal Pain, Diarrhoea, Reflux, IBS, Food Intolerances. Working with the digestion has long been a favourite of mine.

“If you’re not absorbing the nutrients from your food and eliminating your waste in a timely way, it’s pretty impossible to have a healthy working body.” Additional to the digestive system there is also the Ileo-Caecal Valve that I check regularly and love to correct. This little valve can create havoc in the body and I have seen so many symptoms change dramatically when this is returned to balance. Food Intolerances is one of the areas for which Kinesiology is well known. Novak Djokovic has spoken about his use of it back in 2010/2011 for Food Intolerances to identify what foods suited his body and those that didn’t. Wheat was one of the foods that showed up as an energy disrupter for Djokovic, he stopped eating the suspect foods for two weeks and had an immediate positive change.

Novak Djokovic used Kinesiology to help digestive problems

6

He then permanently changed his diet and the benefits quickly followed: • Within 12 months he had lost 11lb. • He was lighter, leaner, stronger and healthier. His performance increased and exceeded anything that he had achieved by changing trainer, coaching methods, meditation etc. • He became the World Number One 12 months later and has held that position more often than not since then.

Emotions are another area that Kinesiology can help tremendously. Releasing old habits, behaviours etc allow people to move forward and transition into new ways of living and feeling. It can be done with ease and without huge trauma being uncovered. Holly Willoughby who has also spoken about the breakthroughs and releases that she has experienced from having Kinesiology a few years ago and found it fascinating and beneficial to her mental health.

“Well you worked your magic again. Yesterday I felt amazing. Bladder holding so much better /slept really well and my energy good.”

THE WONDER OF MASSAGE So, is massage just a relaxing thing? Not by a long shot, here are just some of the ways that massage can benefit you. Counteracts Sitting - We do much more of that nowadays Sofas, desk chairs, driving, travelling by plane/train etc: we sit much more now than what we did 50 years ago. Postural stress can show up in shoulders, neck, lower back and hips and this can be caused or irritated by prolonged periods of sitting. Fortunately massage can counteract the imbalance caused by sitting by working on the tighter areas and allowing the overstretched areas to return to normal tone.

Massage eases muscle pain

Massage enables better sleep

8

Eases Muscle Pain Sore, Tight Muscles? Massage brings extra blood to the worked-on areas. Blood feeds and oxygenates muscle fibres, this is really helpful for them. Easing out the fibres with some of the specialist techniques I do such as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) has additional benefits. This is a more advanced form of massage work, it involves both the stretching and contracting of the targeted muscle group. PNF stretching is one of the most effective forms of stretching for improving flexibility and increasing range of motion. Improves Sleep Massage encourages restful sleep especially when a person has regular massage. Slow, rhythmic massage activated the parasympathetic nervous system which is the calmer aspect of the nervous system. Not all massage does this so the practitioner has to know the difference. Some massage can be stimulatory, this won’t help sleep at all. It also can be very beneficial in promoting relaxation and sleep in people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy and this is a very welcome benefit to those who need it. (See more on page 11)

Soothes an Anxious or Overactive Mind. Several studies have investigated massage for patients with generalised anxiety disorder. One study showed women with this condition were treated twice weekly with 1 hour massage. Reports showed decreased feelings of anxiety and increased feeling of self-confidence. Other research has shown people living with long-term health conditions such as fibromyalgia found benefits. In 2014, a systematic review and meta-analysis of nine studies showed that massage therapy if continued for at least 5 weeks decreased pain and reduced anxiety and depression in people with fibromyalgia by promoting relaxation. Supports Emotions During Breast Cancer “Human touch, in a context that is safe, friendly and professional, can be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing.” Women diagnosed with breast cancer who received massage therapy three times a week reported being less depressed and less angry according to a 2005 study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience.

Massage supports emotions at stressful times

Children & Adolescents Benefit Also The Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, found patients who were depressed and anxious were much more relaxed and happy and their stress levels reduced after massage. Boosts Immunity Massage boosts clients white blood cell count, this plays a large role in defending the body from disease. This was supported by a 2010 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

“Neck and arm massage with the hot stones, very relaxing with great results.”

“First class massage session, would definitely recommend Rosemary for any treatment.”

9

Supports Joints and Arthritis Living with constant joint pain? It can be helped by massage. Arthritis can be a frustrating and painful condition. It’s main symptoms are chronic joint pain and stiffness, this can make movement both difficult and uncomfortable. There are two main types: Osteoarthritis, which causes the breakdown of cartilage that protects the joints Rheumatoid, where the immune system mistakenly targets and attacks the lining of the joints Both types lead to inflammation and pain in the joint. Massage can help to ease these symptoms in both types. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases states “Massage can help to decrease arthritis pain and improve flexibility in the muscles, joints and tendons.” Areas of the body that can be massaged A full body massage is now being offered again; this includes the neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, legs, feet and face. A full body does take a longer amount of time and I am delighted to now say that I am returning to do these sessions again. They are available as either 1.5 or 2 hour sessions. Choose the time If you want to book this longer session, get in touch length right for you with me either by phone or by email. I can then make special provision in the diary, as the online booking system is still laid out in 45 minutes sessions. All of these areas can also be done separately in 45 minute sessions and this means that more time will be spent and therefore more benefit may be felt when required in that specific area. If relaxation is the aim, different techniques are applied. For example, joint mobilisation can be required where restricted movement is a factor. So it’s important to tell me what your aim of the massage is before we start. So, joint pain release v deep relaxation. At different times, I may use my hands, forearms, hot stones, soft ball, cold stones and have studied with excellent teachers in Advanced Clinical Massage, Hot Stone Fusion, Myofascial and Oncology Courses so you’re in

“SAFE HANDS” with Rosemary 10

BENEFITS OF ONCOLOGY MASSAGE Many cancer centres offer oncology massage now as a complementary treatment for cancer. It’s not used as a treatment to cure, like chemotherapy or surgery are—but as a method of helping with the symptoms of cancer and the side effects of treatment. Oncology massage can help with many of the common symptoms such as; pain, cancer-related fatigue and anxiety. It can also improve quality of life, and meets evidencebased guidelines in helping relieve depression and mood disorders in women with breast cancer. Massage may also play a role in the prevention of neuropathic (nerve) pain related to chemotherapy drugs such as Taxol. Reduces pain - Endorphins (pleasure chemicals) are released during massage and these can reduce pain and relieve stress.

the time to breathe and relax, which can be the key to feeling your best during a difficult time. Helpful for Insomnia - drug sideeffects or worry about your life can be factors. Sleep is important for your immune system to work so helping you sleep is helping your body. Relieves Anxiety - can be linked to insomnia, lying awake at night is not helpful for anxiety levels but it may also happen at other times too. Relaxing massage reduces your anxiety as it connects with your parasympathetic nervous system which is your calming system See also page 35 regarding Health Creation (this also includes the Cancer Lifeline Programme & The Carer’s Guide)

Stress Relieving - the word “cancer” can be enough to induce stress. Massage and the calming oils (where appropriate) are so helpful for alleviating stress. Improves Quality of Life - Regular massage creates a prolonged sense of well-being, improving a patient’s overall mood. Massage gives you

ONCOLOGY MASSAGE People with Cancer, Post-Cancer and other life-changing illnesses like Heart Disease, or Neurology Conditions, can benefit from specialist massage techniques. Up to now it’s been very rare that a regular client coming to Down To Earth Health has developed cancer and I hope that continues. Now, that statistics in general have increased to 1 in 2, I want to be as educated as possible in this disease both for people directly affected and also those doing the caring. This is why I’m investing my time and money into learning the different ways I can help. I trained in Oncology Massage in 2021 initially and decided to go back again in 2022 to redo it and now feel really confident in what I offer you. What makes oncology massage different? Massage or Touch can still happen when cancer is present in the body. There is the old outdated school of thought that massage spreads cancer throughout the body. This has now been proved to be a myth. However, it is important to be properly trained to offer this type of massage.

LOVELY QUOTE FROM A CLIENT

"I really enjoyed my (very first!) Hot Stone Massage and I got a great night's sleep afterwards. I'm looking forward to my next appointment."

Cancer treatments such as chemo and radiation can create side effects in the body such as the crawlies (how skin can feel) and nausea etc. What area of the body can be massaged on the day is one of the things taken into consideration as well as tubes, bags and what position is now comfortable for you to be in to receive your massage. There is also a seated chair for massage if lying down isn’t comfortable for you. It also helps to work with a multi-disciplinary practitioner like myself, is that I can bring knowledge from other aspects of my work when and where it is both needed and wanted. From Autumn 2022, I hope to be working with the Lavender Touch and Motor Neurone Scotland charities. 12

The Treatment Room at Down To Earth Health awaits you 13

One of the great things in 21st century living. These aren’t the tests that tell you about what part of the world your ancestors came from, they are really interesting too but these aren’t them. These DNA tests tell you how your genes work within you. Genes aren’t always perfectly formed, they can have areas called SNPs (pronounced Snips) that create variations. These variations are looked at and how they affect your health. With DNA Life, you don’t just get a report in the post, they only work with practitioners, so you work with me and I support and guide you with relevant changes you may want to make. Questions that DNAlysis answer Learn an incredible amount of important information about yourself? What conditions are you susceptible to? What changes would be beneficial for you? Do you need to change your diet or take some nutritional supplements? What exercise most suits your body? DNA kits from DNA Life provide you with so many different categories, including: dietary needs, personality traits, cancer and disease risk, brain health, stress traits, physical requirements, behavioural traits and so much more.

The 4 letters that make up our DNA. AGT&C

and yet we are all totally unique

14

Dietary Needs - Learning to Eat According to Your Genes Be alerted to your possible food sensitivities and what is the optimal diet based on your genes. When you eat according to your genes, your overall health and wellness can be improved dramatically. Are you lactose intolerant, caffeine sensitive, genetically sensitive to carbohydrates etc.

Nutrition Requirements You find out if your body has additional needs for supplements, your genes may not be able to process certain vitamins, minerals etc so even if they are in your diet, you may not be getting enough of them. Some minerals such as zinc have huge effects on so many other nutrients, so it can have a knock-on effect. And serious illnesses can manifest if the body is lacking in certain ones. Prevention Cancer, Heart Disease and so many other serious illness can be prevented. Do your genes make you more susceptible to these life changing conditions. Maybe you think to yourself, “I don’t want to know”! However if you don’t know then you can’t make the appropriate change that could PREVENT this happening. And this is fact! Diet & lifestyle have a huge effect on so many illnesses. If you find out how you are more susceptible, then you should be able to be screened more often. Get to Know Yourself Better Chemicals we produce in our body called Neurotransmitters such as Serotonin, Dopamine and Oxytocin create a framework for what becomes our personality. Do we have the ability to create and utilise these chemicals. Knowing this can make us a bit more forgiving of our perceived shortcomings and

also you can identify what would be helpful for you to do to create more of these neurotransmitters. Our strengths and weaknesses may be more down to our genes than what we thought. Being open, conscientious, agreeable or neurotic, depressed, etc. Tendency to Addiction - An All or Nothing Personality Addictions can tear people and family apart. Are you at risk of food addiction or any of the following, alcohol, drugs, smoking, gambling etc. This crucial information can let someone know if they have those tendencies so the can be really mindful about what choices they make in life. Knowing that you have these changes in your genes also helps you realise it’s not just having enough willpower, you may need additional support to overcome these tendencies. Fit For Life Are you a speedy sprinter or can you keep going for the duration. I found out that I was power and endurance linked, who would have thought???? However, finding this out can be really helpful as there is a big difference between what makes a sprinter and a marathon runner and they don’t normally cross over. Modifying your fitness along with what you eat can change your ability drastically.

15

Remember, most of our genes are influenced by external factors and this enables personalised health programs to support the chronically ill patient to improve their health. For someone at peak fitness to gain the utmost from their training programme is at the other end of the scale and also achievable. The impact of diet, lifestyle, exercise and our environment is immense. Health management, Dietary disposition, Athletic performance & Drug Metabolism are all reviewed. I am now delighted to offer a panel of the following tests: DNA Diet DNA Health DNA Mind DNA Skin DNA Sport DNA Oestrogen Each of these different tests have their own specific areas of genes that are tested. I would love to talk to you more about them, it’s truly 21st century living and gives you important information about how your body could change long before those developments may become apparent. The cnew habits you choose could prevent these detrimental changes ever happening. You can find out more about each of the above tests on the website or give me a call.

LEARN KINESIOLOGY If you fancy learning Kinesiology either at Foundation or Diploma level, I teach it here in the Borders and possibly in Edinburgh in the future. I taught in Edinburgh before Covid and the lovely room I hired has been sold so I’m looking for a new room to hire that isn’t too expensive. If you know of one please let me know. I started teaching the Kinesiology Foundation back in 2000 and then taught on the Practitioner course for The Academy of Systematic Kinesiology (TASK) in 2002 and taught that for a couple of years until I moved to Scotland. They were big classes in London with about 26 people in the group. More recently, I have taught smaller groups in the Borders and Edinburgh and I have to say, I prefer the smaller groups. The Diploma was upgraded a few years ago when I was involved with a Training Review with the Kinesiology Association. At present (2022) I am teaching the Diploma in modular format and have an Intensive Foundation happening from the 1st - 12th August 2022 which is very exciting. I hope to have an additional Modular Foundation and Diploma starting in 2023.

18

Routes in Kinesiology If you are someone who is on the road to being a practitioner in Kinesiology and you are coming from a different career, then you choose the Foundation and then the Diploma. This is required so you can obtain insurance to be a practitioner. If you are someone who is qualified in another modality then you choose the Foundation and then decide if you want to continue with the Diploma. If you have done a Practitioner Course with another college and would like to get up to Diploma Level then that route is available also.

I am very proud to be the author of the new Muscle book that I wrote in 2020 that is used throughout the country by Kinesiology Tutors. I am delighted to say it is going down a treat with both tutors and students alike.

SUPPLEMENTS These are my findings with my clients over the last 20 years and not ‘scientifically proven’. CYTOPLAN

This is one of the companies I’ve use the longest. I love their products first and foremost and their ethics very close behind. They have recently changed their packaging they didn’t want to just go for recyclable tubs, they’ve gone for compostable ones. So, when all the goodness is in you, you can pop the tub on your compost heap and over time have it in your garden.

Acidophilus Plus This is without doubt the good gut bacteria blend that has had the most consistent benefit over the last 20 years for my clients. Regularly helping people with diarrhoea, it’s can also be helpful with bloating, abdominal discomfort and other bowel problems. It’s also shown as being really helpful for sinus problems and avoiding other infections including bacterial and viral problems by giving your immune system a really good boost. This may be that your body fights them off without you even being aware they are in your body. Biofood Magnesium This is a magnesium supplement that has really helpful benefits for both cramp and for people who have sleeping problems. It’s another one that I have used for the last couple of decades with my clients and I use it nightly myself also so I can really vouch for it.

22

TERRANOVA PRODUCTS

It only seems like a year ago that I first discovered them and was immediately impressed by there efficacy and their clean ingredients. It was actually 2014, where do the years go? NO WHEAT – NO GLUTEN – NO SOY – NO YEAST – NO DAIRY – NO GELATINE – NO ANIMAL INGREDIENTS – NO ADDITIVES – NO ADDED SUGAR – NO COLOURS – NO FLAVOURS – NO PRESERVATIVES

Life Drink I find this life drink powder a real tonic, it makes me feel so nurtured and I know that sounds like a really strange thing to say about a supplement but it does. I absolutely love it and several of my clients have found a real improvement to their health and some of them have experienced the feeling or being nurtured too. One lovely gentleman found it made a massive difference to how he felt when he was recovering from Covid and now swears by it. Digestive Enzymes As we get older and I’m talking about over the age of 45, we may produce less of our own natural digestive enzymes. This means our body is unable to absorb the nutrients from our food very well which can then lead to poor health, low energy, increased risk of infections etc. So if you feel your diet is good, you’re eating your veggies and you are still low in energy, a blend of good digestive enzymes could be beneficial. If you have a stomach ulcer, please get in touch as some blends contain betaine hydrochloric acid which is necessary for some people but not good if you have an ulcer. This particular blend also contain good gut bacteria or microflora so have double beneficial action for digestion.

23

Glucosamine, Boswellia & MSM Complex A number of my clients have used this in the last 8 or 9 years for joint problems and have felt the benefits. I’ve used it also when I’ve seen too many clients and my shoulder, wrist or finger joints have become a bit sore and inflamed. It soothes and relieves the pain and that is what is required.

NUTRI ADVANCED LTD

Nutri are another company I have used for the longest time and are renowned in their industry as being a high quality, ethical company. Their Multi Essential range of multi vitamins and the Eskimo range of Fish Oils have been a mainstay in my practice for well over a decade, probably closer to two decades. The Multi Essential range contain really good levels of B-Vitamins and a broad spectrum of other vitamins and minerals. The Eskimo range is a wide range of fish oil supplements that are not only ethically sourced, they are also clean and stable. This certainly can’t be said for all fish oil supplements.

24

And finally….

NEW ROOTS HERBAL is the newest supplement company that I’ve

been using for the last 4-5 years and I’m loving their products too. The name New Roots Herbal symbolises a rejuvenation of the body and mind, a changing of lifestyles from old harmful habits to healthy new beginnings. The company’s mission is to produce the most therapeutic nutraceutical formulas designed for the prevention and cure of disease. They are made in Canada to the highest standards and contain many beautiful natural ingredients that work in powerful synergy with each other. Zen Plus I can’t say enough about their Zen Plus, when I need some extra focus (like today writing this booklet) this is where I go. it contains beautiful B-Vitamins and also a really gorgeous combination of specific herbs which are calming and grounding. Parasit & Pro-Boulardii Parasit food supplement combines 10 selected plants: including artemisia, clove, garlic, grapefruit seed and walnut. It can be all too easy to pick up a parasite and although it sounds horrid, it can happen. If we are out in the garden and wipe our mouths after working in the soil, if we have eaten salad not properly washed or meat not fully cooked. then we can end up with a parasite. The Pro-Boulardii Plus works in conjunction with the cleansing herbs and helps the level of good gut bacteria to be reinstated. It is advised to do a parasite cleanse with a health practitioner so please do get in touch. Vital Cellular This does what it says on the tin (tub). It keeps your cells vital, healthy and in good working order. It has a really good amount of antioxidants in it. When we keep our cells healthy we keep our body healthy, as our cells make up the tissues and organs in our body.

25

HOMEOBOTANICALS Often known as clients “little potions”! These are much loved by my clients of all ages and sexes. I have used these magic bottles since 2003 and love their beneficial actions. Physical conditions and areas of the body can be helped by them. They are great for detoxing, calming, stimulating, rejuvenating the body and a little goes a long way. They taste delicious, are easy to take and they work. They can be used on young and not so young.

“I am so grateful to Rosemary. She has listened to me when no one else did, and her “potions” have helped enormously . Having felt extreme fatigue for years already, I am achieving more each day.”

BACH FLOWER ESSENCES

I generally use these when doing Kinesiology but have made them up without as well when people need them urgently. Bach Flower essences are for various emotions and in the set there are 38 remedies in total. You may have heard of Rescue Remedy, and that is a mix of a few of the 38 in the set and is wonderful if you have had a bit of a shock or an accident. However, the other 33 are equally as helpful. And these can also be used on all age groups. From confidence building to increasing focus. From terror and nightmares to anger and resentment. We all feel these emotions from time to time, sometimes like whirling thoughts they can get inside our heads and not leave appropriately.

COMMON SIGNS THAT YOUR COLON (LARGE INTESTINE) MAY NEED SOME ATTENTION Do you wake up in the wee small hours? If you wake up consistently between 5:00am and 7:00am, your large intestine may be asking for some support. While we sleep, the large intestine as well as other organs linked to cleansing becomes more active energetically. They work on eliminating. Waking up mid-way or later around this “large intestine time” can signal that it’s your natural waking up time. If it’s earlier in the two hour period then it could be your colon is exhibiting signs of toxicity and sluggishness. Skin problems? Eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, skin rashes, acne and dry skin are clues that the large intestine is overwhelmed. Grief linked emotions? If the large intestine is sluggish then constipation can occur. People often feel they are holding on to things (emotionally or materially) or they may let go of everything inappropriately. Diarrhoea can be an indication of letting go. Grief is the emotion linked to the large intestine, it can be the big overwhelming grief of bereavement, illness or divorce. It can also be linked to people 32

“giving or causing you grief” and perhaps feeling overwhelmed by responsibility. Conditions such as Chrohns and MS? As David Perlmutter (author of Grain Brain and Brain Wash) says “In a recent issue of the journal Neurotherapeutics, researchers embarked on their study with the accepted premise that intestinal permeability (leakiness of the gut) has been widely evaluated in terms of its relationship to various forms of inflammatory bowel disease, as well as celiac disease, and that imbalances in the gut bacteria are involved in this relationship. They also described the well-known relationship between an autoimmune, inflammatory condition of the bowel, Crohn’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Both of these conditions are now characterised by increased permeability, or leakiness, of the gut.” And much can now be done for these conditions using natural therapies. Diarrhoea? When we are stressed, the stomach and small intestine functions slows down as we are not really able to digest food when we are supposed to be running away from danger. Stress activates the stimulatory

nervous system and that has an eliminatory response which can cause bowel urgency or diarrhoea. So, that is your body’s response to nervous tension, it’s fine if it happens once in a blue moon. But, it has a way of depleting your energy if occurring regularly. Do get in touch if you have this problem as you can’t absorb nutrients from your food efficiently if it’s racing through you and it can cause further tension in planning on going out for the day.

Constipation? This condition can often be caused by a congested and toxic liver or even stressed adrenals. The colon should still be addressed, but it is often not the root cause and giving all of these organs support is really important so they can remove the toxicity, otherwise it may recirculate around the body and just find a different home and carry on causing trouble. Do get in touch with me via email if you don’t have a bowel movement of a healthy size and consistency.

5 STEPS THAT SUPPORT A HEALTHY LARGE INTESTINE

The foods you eat and the lifestyle you live have a direct impact on your digestive health. Taking steps to improve your digestive health can help your digestive system function more efficiently and improve your overall health and sense of well-being. Not sure where to start? Try incorporating these strategies into your daily life to keep things running smoothly: 1. Get both insoluble and soluble fibre. Consuming both types of fibre, helps your digestive system in different ways. “Insoluble Fibre”, known as roughage, can’t be digested by the body and adds bulk to the stools. Good sources include some whole grains like quinoa, brown rice and vegetable skins. “Soluble fibre” draws in water and can help prevent stools that are too watery. You can get soluble fibre from oats, beans and vegetables.

2. Choose lean meats. Protein is a needed part of a healthy diet, limiting fatty cuts of meat can be beneficial if you have digestive discomfort. Select pork loin, skinless chicken and limit your portion size. 3. Incorporate probiotics — and prebiotics — into your diet. Probiotics are the same kind of healthy bacteria and yeasts naturally present in your digestive tract. Eating organic, natural, full fat yoghurt can be helpful as well as other products such as kefir. A good supplement in capsule form can be helpful especially in Spring and Autumn to boost your immune system. In addition to probiotics, prebiotics can help your digestion as well. Prebiotics are found in a variety of raw fruits, vegetables, and whole grains including bananas, oats, onions, and legumes. 4. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is good for your digestive health, the fibre in your food holds water into the colon to create softer, bulkier stools, allowing them to pass through and out more easily. 5. Manage stress. Find your way to manage stress. We can’t stop stress happening but what we do with it, is really important. Find stress-reducing activities that you enjoy and practice them on a regular basis. Dancing, yoga, art, singing, low level exercise classes may all be helpful. If you feel you have too much stress or anxiety or can’t manage it yourself, give me a call.

DR ROSY DANIELS - Cancer Lifeline Programme, Health Creation Programme and Carers Programme I am now working as a Health Creation Mentor with Dr Rosy Daniels. I have so enjoyed this course and feel like I’ve learned so much. I first looked at doing it about 15 years ago and felt I needed to grow more as a practitioner.

CANCER LIFELINE PROGRAMME

This is an amazing programme for people who are newly diagnosed or re-diagnosed with Cancer. A cancer diagnosis is an incredible shock to the body and it takes a while to adjust and to know what is the best way forward.

It really is that a LIFELINE and is packed with both fabulous and useful information for you as the patient/client. It may then be appropriate to bring the Health Creation programme in as an additional tool, or you may prefer to get through your hospital treatment first and stay doing the Cancer Lifeline programme. There is no right or wrong way of doing it, there is Your Way supported by me as one of the avenues in your care. I would liaise with your cancer team and advise them of potentials changes you choose to make within the programme(s).

N.B. I want to make it clear, this is not an alternative programme recommending that you don’t follow doctors recommendations. I will write to your cancer team, introduce myself and work alongside them. This programme, helps people figure out how they can best help their bodies themselves along with the help they will get from the cancer team at the hospital. When the initial shock of the diagnosis is over we can work using the Cancer Lifeline Programme.

HEALTH CREATION PROGRAMME

The Health Creation programme focuses on exactly that. Creating the best health you can experience. This may include creating new habits and behaviours. 6 sessions are generally required usually 3-4 weeks apart. This gives you long 35

enough to incorporate the new habits and at the same time not so long that you go off track and forget what the changes are. There are 12 principles that can be worked on and the areas that are chosen are totally up to what you feel is priority for you after completing the questions that accompany the Picture of Health. Over the period of 6 sessions, you can feel your health improving and also see it change in the chart image that we use. It’s called the Picture of Health (PoH). All the literature is supplied to you and it can be done on the phone, in person or on zoom.

“I was so impressed by Rosemary and immediately felt at ease. I felt relaxed and able to talk freely. She is a skilled listener and clearly knowledgeable in her field.”

THE CARERS GUIDE

The Carers Guide is invaluable for those in the caring position when they can often overlook their own needs and not get the support they need. It doesn’t just apply to relatives of people with cancer, this programme is for anyone who is caring for someone with a Life Changing condition be it varying forms of dementia, heart problems, motor neurone, Parkinson’s etc. Carers can run themselves ragged, deplete their energy, miss out on sleep and totally use up their reserves. This can then lead to them becoming ill. Background Dr Daniels was the medical doctor at the Bristol Cancer Care Trust for 15 years (now Penny Brohn UK). When she left, she then spent 3 years developing Health Creation, Cancer Lifeline and Carer’s Programmes knowing there was a need for each of these programmes. The Cancer Lifeline speaks for itself, Health Creation is for those who are either through cancer treatment, post cancer, or those who have never experienced cancer to any other life threatening illness. They just want to move forward with the best possible pathways toward lasting good health.

TREADING LIGHTLY WHERE I CAN Still thinking of ways to be kind to this our home - Planet Earth. • We now stock Weleda products who are a very ethical skin care company using natural ingredients in a considerate way. • I still keep as much packaging from stock orders and either re-use it myself when I send out supplement/gift parcels to you. Additionally, I also share quite a bit of it with other businesses here in Selkirk like Holmes Glass as they require quite a bit of packaging when shipping their products. Re-using in my mind, is even better than re-cycling. • LED long-lasting bulbs have been used in the last few years at the shop and clinic which means they are changed less regularly so less waste. • I still drive up to work most days as I usually have a big bag or washing to bring back up or take away from the shop but it’s something I am mindful of.

WORKPLACE WELLNESS A Multi-Disciplinary Practitioner like myself can offer a company so much. As a Health Creation Mentor, I can work with employees and encourage them to make behavioural changes, this inspires and motivates employees to make a shift and I can then provide ongoing support where needed. As a company, you may supply free coffee, subsidised lunches, gym membership etc and these are all fantastic benefits. But what would put you head and shoulders above the others would be to have a Health Creation Mentor who can also provide other modalities such as Kinesiology, Nutrition, Bach Flower Essences etc. Health Creation isn’t only about physical health, its about mental health and connectedness as well. While diet and exercise are important for maintaining physical wellbeing, they are also components of mental health also. Likewise our mental health can have a huge effect on what we choose to eat and do. Incorporating a workplace wellness programme at your office/company gives you and your employees a space where they can: C - Clarify your/their areas of health that need support R - Review what is working for you/them E - Explore new areas that need development A - Affirm the areas that you/they do well in T - Transform how you/they think, feel, behave I - Imagine how you/they want life/work to be O - Outcomes are worked to, if challenges arise, we identify what the obstacle is, find what is necessary to overcome it and then reach the outcome N - New Life is what the Outcome and Imaginings led us to and now is the time to Live the New Life and acknowledge what we have achieved

Employees can radiate many vibes Which do you want in your company?

38

Does investing in Wellness Mentoring really make a difference to the workplace? The leading causes of death in the UK include tobacco use, poor nutrition (not lack of food, but empty food devoid of the basic nutrition), lack of physical activity. These three things are all linked to Dementia including Alzheimer’s Disease, Heart Disease and Cancer. Solving these problems can lead to lasting positive impacts on peoples health. Encouraging and supporting your employees as they learn about healthier options brought to them in ways they will understand, can lead to better productivity and less staff turnover. Positive Work Environment When a person feels good nurtured physically and mentally they radiate positivity. Creating a healthy work/ life balance doesn’t just enable them to feel better, it translates to how they perform their job, how they interact with colleagues and customers, the company will benefit from the energy they bring into their workplace. When the Going Gets Tough We all know that life can get tough at times, curveballs can come out of nowhere. Elderly parents can need extra care, Children going to university and where do you find the money for their accommodation etc, someone in the family may have a long term health problem.

When things happen we have to have the resilience to deal with them. Mentoring at these stages can be totally invaluable, Health Creation covers being a carer, long term illness, as well as general life. Plus as a nutritional therapist and kinesiologist, I can also give advice on what foods and supplements will give the body the best support at these most needed times. Higher Quality Production Employees who are exhausted and overworked can’t be as productive as those who care for their physical and mental wellbeing. Offering services to support and initiate health endeavours will lead to a higher quality in their work. They will also feel more inspired and energise so will make fewer mistakes. Employee Dedication If an employee feels like “just another cog in a machine” and maybe not even a well-oiled machine, they are less likely to give their all. An employee who feels motivated and nurtured by knowing their employer cares about their wellbeing, they will be far more dedicated to you and their job. What to do next? Give me a call or send me an email and we can arrange a meeting to find out more about each other.
