How to use the Guide The Film Festival Guide has been designed to help you get the very best from this year’s programme. Split into 2 sections, the first part covers all the films in an A to Z format and by programme section. The second part is a handy day by day diary which can be used as a quick reference guide to see when and where films are being screened.

Official Selection

Official Selection Introduction Official Selection is the backbone of the Film Festival highlighting new work from the most talented filmmakers from around the world, previews of new features by some of the greatest directors working today alongside exclusives from exciting new talents. There will also be a series of archive screenings to mark the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall featuring some of the best German films from the last two decades. Alongside the film screenings, there’s an exciting line up of special events from the Open Cinema Unconference, exploring access to the diverse range of world cinema, celebrations of film music and Edgar Reitz’s classic TV series Heimat, special guests and Q&As. The festival opens with two keenly anticipated new films, The Men Who Stare at Goats, the Opening Gala film is a brilliant satire on modern warfare based on the book by Jon Ronson and the Official Selection opener is Bright Star, the latest from top director Jane Campion (The Piano) based on the life of romantic poet John Keats. Previews of other big names include the

fantastic new Coen Brothers’ comedy A Serious Man and the latest from two of cinema’s greatest provocateurs, Catherine Breillat’s subversive reinvention of the Bluebeard folk tale and Harmony Korine’s anarchic and extraordinary Trash Humpers. The Golden Owl Competition provides a fascinating overview of some of the most exciting new cinematic talents from around the world. La Pivellina is a moving tale of courage and discrimination set amongst a circus community outside Rome. The King of Escape is a wonderful oddball French comedy about a gay man who tries to go straight. Seven Minutes in Heaven is a dynamic, emotional drama set in Jerusalem. In all, 16 diverse and innovative new features compete for the prestigious Golden Owl award. Catch them all and you will experience an overview of the possibilities of contemporary cinema.

Tomás and Helena are a Chilean couple living together in a hot apartment, when suddenly Sandra arrives - like a fresh wind caressing skin, they both want to breathe her in, over and over. She is the exgirlfriend of Helena’s brother, who disappeared some years before after diving into a lagoon, and her presence has a potent effect. Gum ball colours, desire and erotic scenes make this a film you can feel with your body, as the three of them create something beautiful together.

Set in Catalunya amidst the mountains, Anders lives in his familial homestead and is supposedly the head of the family (though his austere mother really runs the show). When a Peruvian farmhand is taken on to help while Anders recovers from an injury, things take surprising and moving turns and a very different form of healing takes place. Wonderfully understated acting makes this a must-see for all admirers of subtlety. Prepare to be impressed!

Catherine Breillat, France, 2009, 80 mins, French, ST, Digibeta Thu 12, 14:00, VUE1 ¦ Thu 12, 18:00 VUE1 In the deliciously subversive Bluebeard, controversial French director Catherine Breillat reinvents the lurid Charles Perrault fairy tale, perhaps the first ever serial killer yarn. Once upon a time in the 1950s two young sisters go to play in the attic. Impish Catherine insists on reading Bluebeard to her frightened sister, and as she does, the story unfolds onscreen. In an unspecific time around the 18th century, poor young MarieCatherine is offered as a bride to local squire Bluebeard, although his previous wives have disappeared without trace.

Bright Star - Opening Film, Official Selection Dir. Jane Campion, UK / Australia / France, 2009, 119 mins, 35mm Wed 4, 20:30, TOWN HALL Jane Campion (The Piano) stuns us all with her depiction of the last three years of poet John Keats’ life, in all its aching beauty. Starring Abbie Cornish (Somersault) as the witty and passionate Fanny Brawne (Keats’ lover) and Ben Whishaw (Perfume) as Keats, this sensual and infinitely poetic piece explores their deeply moving bond set to the changing seasons of the gorgeous English countryside. Rapturously received at its premiere in Cannes, this is an absolute delight and one to be relished by all.

Stephen Turnbull hasn’t been outside in months, he refuses to interact with the world until a sudden infestation of mice forces him to relive a disastrous trek around Europe with his friend Bunny, a womanising, gamblingaddicted booze-hound. Julian Barratt, Noel Fielding and Richard Ayoade also make appearances for you Boosh fans out there.

She retreats from her familiar urban life to self-imposed solitude in a dilapidated house in the Zeeland countryside. With radical use of handheld camera techniques, innovative editing and sound and an intense, unforgettable central performance by Rifka Lodeizen, Can Go Through Skin evokes the horrors of a psychological breakdown and a painstaking and determined journey to recovery.

Plagued by anxiety and self doubt over his interpretation of Uncle Vanya for a new production of the Chekov play Paul comes across a potential solution; a new high tech company can alleviate suffering by extracting and storing souls. Giamatti decides to use their services with the intention of reinstating everything once he survives the performance but things go wrong when a soul trafficking mule borrows his soul for an ambitious but talentless Russian soap opera actress.

In the midst of the constraints of life in the GDR, there existed a fantasy world where it was possible to be individual. The most important characteristic of this bohemian scene was one’s personal style. But this was not something that could be purchased off the rack in the GDR. Directed by Marco Wilms, himself a model at a GDR fashion institute.

Cracks features a charismatic performance by Eva Green (The Dreamers, Casino Royale) as Miss G, the enigmatic new teacher in an all-girl English boarding school circa 1930. She teaches her pupils that ‘desire is the most important thing in life’ and encourages their idolization. But when a new Spanish girl arrives at the school, attentions are shifted and jealousies reign.

Crying with Laughter Dir. Justin Molotnikov, UK, 2009, 93 mins, 35mm Sun 8, 17:30, TOWN HALL Crying with Laughter is an intensely edgy comedy-thriller about a controversial, confrontational stand up comic, Joey Frisk, played with gusto by Stephen McCole. Joey’s life comes apart at the seams just as he gets the opportunity of a big break. An American talent scout comes to see his act in his native Edinburgh, but his cocaine addiction, family and money problems all reach fever pitch, not to mention all the enemies lined up from assorted invective-strewn stage rants and a disturbing encounter with a shady character from his past.

Departures (Okuribito) UK Premiere Dir. Yôjirô Takita, Japan, 2008, 130 mins, Japanese, ST, 35mm Fri 6, 20:00, VUE2 ¦ Sun 8, 20:00, VUE2 This year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Departures is a delightful and sensitive journey into the heartland of Japan and an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of the country's cultural heritage, the preparation of the dead before cremation. When a premiere symphony orchestra in Tokyo disbands, Daigo is left suddenly unemployed. Forced to rethink his career, he moves away with his wife to the crumbling remains of his mother’s house, and answers a job ad wanting help with ‘departures’. Daigo is about to discover brand new life.

Dogtooth (Kynodontas) Dir. Giorgos Lanthimos, Greece, 2009, 94 mins, Greek, ST, DigiBeta Sun 8, 20:30, HYDE ¦ Tue 10, 18:30, HYDE One of 2009’s revelations - it is absolutely staggering. Dogtooth burns magnesium bright with its audacious vision of a Greek middle class patriarch who governs his family as if the outside world is in a state of madness, danger and warfare, feeding them propaganda and lies to keep them docile and obedient, like trained dogs. Erotic and bizarre episodes frequent the film near constantly like a twisted, macabre fairy tale of an authority that causes people to shut off from the outside world and turn in on themselves instead.

Wandering through the hot streets of a Spanish town, the gorgeous (and impressively acted) Santiago is having an existential crisis. Day and night he walks the streets encountering different people, including randomly meeting a Jane Birkin-esque girl, a fair bit of time with a bottle, and some extremely intriguing singing nuns… Produced by the great Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light, LIFF 2007). Don’t miss this one.

Film Music Conference £20/£15/£10 (Full / Alumni / Conc, inc. lunch), Concert and Keynote Interview both FREE ¦ Fri 6, 10:00, UNI The University of Leeds School of Music presents a Film Music Conference on Friday 6 November 2009 featuring a keynote interview with film composer Ilan Eshkeri (Layer Cake, Hannibal Rising, Stardust, The Young Victoria) and a rare opportunity to hear new music performed live to silent films in the University’s beautiful Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall. The conference is intended to be wide ranging, and will also include academic papers and an introduction to the film music holdings at the University, particularly the Michael Nyman Archive. Set in the staggeringly awesome Icelandic landscape on ‘White Night’ (midsummer’s eve when the sun doesn’t set), the film follows Jón and his eccentric pagan wife as they move from Reykjavík to a small sea-side village where some huge changes take place. Brimming with humour with a dash of melancholia, and always very Icelandic, this is a touching and bittersweet tale of love and the bewitching power of White Night.

The mother is wild, monstrous and unpredictable, leaving her little girl alone with her grandmother for great stretches of time, the daughter increasingly finds solace and escape through her fertile imagination. Vasili Sigarev’s mesmerising and visually poetic debut is also savage and uncompromising with a towering central performance by Yana Troyanova as the mother. Two young women named Marie revolt against a decayed and oppressive society, attacking symbols of wealth and bourgeois culture. Described by the director as a ‘philosophical documentary in the form of a farce’, the film is about creativity and rebellion, both defiant feminist statement and nihilistic, avant-garde comedy. The first screening on Wednesday 4 November is with live, improvised accompaniment by innovative Leeds band Monkey See Monkey Do.

Jan Nowicki plays a dual role as the factory-worker friend of revolutionary journalist Anna, and as the politicalprisoner father of teen-age heroine Zsusza. The film bridges the personal and political lives of its protagonists with great authenticity and examines the conflicts of ideological revolutionaries now compromised by the onset of Stalinism.

Training cameras on local workers, street children and the ubiquitous kites that fly from the hills overlooking Kabul, the results are unforgettable.

In the 50s, aged 12, they became obsessed with Hollywood melodramas and began making their own with their aunt’s 8mm camera. Godfathers of the 60s underground scene, they still make and teach films to this day. This fantastic documentary features admirers including John Waters, Guy Maddin and Cory McAbee who will present the film alongside shorts Cocktail Crooners and the classic Sins of the Fleshapoids.

The film captures the feel of Brazilian life in the 1940s with musical performances, archive footage, and lively reminiscences, including those influenced most by Teixera, the luminaries of the Tropicalia movement Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil to contemporary stars like Bebel Gilberto and David Byrne of Talking Heads and the Luaka Bop record label.

Mother Joan of Angels (Matka Joanna od aniolów) Dir. Jerzy Kawalerowicz, Poland, 1961, 102 mins, Polish, ST, DV Fri 6, 20:30, HOWARD An underground Polish classic, Mother Joan of Angels is an adaptation of the same story that inspired Ken Russell’s The Devils, although stylistically it could hardly be more different. Loudon, France. 1634. A young priest is summoned to perform an exorcism in a Ursuline convent where all the nuns are supposedly possessed by demons and evil spirits. Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s film is spare and beautifully composed visually, patiently unfolding a profoundly disturbing exploration of faith, repression, fanaticism, and eros.

Oblivion (El Olvido) UK Premiere Dir. Heddy Honigmann, The Netherlands, 2008, 93 mins, Spanish, ST, DigiBeta Sat 7, 17:30, CARR2 A fresh and inventive documentary about the city of Lima, Peru by Dutch filmmaker Heddy Honigmann. The film opens with a veteran bartender mixing a ‘Pisco Sour’ the national cocktail, ‘in my 50 years as a bartender, I’ve made it for many presidents… I see history as a badly mixed cocktail made of semi-democratic elections, coups, terrorism and corruption.’ The film then follows the families of street performers who do cartwheels in front of cars at intersections for a few pennies. Between them they assemble an intimate portrait a troubled city.

A rare screening of a BBC Omnibus arts feature that tells the remarkable story of Jean Carignan, a French-Canadian taxi-driver and fiddler, whose pilgrimage to Ireland explores the origins of Sligo legend Michael Coleman’s remarkable musical signature. Donnellan is on great form, artfully directing a film about the fascinating dynamics of cultural migration and musical translation.

Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae Dir. Sleepwalking Through the Mekong Dir. Inspired by the extraordinary Khmer music scene in the 60s and 70s which reinvented Western rock n' roll with a Khmer flavour, their odyssey is a homecoming for singer Chhom Nimol and a transformation for the rest of the band. They perform on Cambodian TV and in the slums, with master musicians and schoolchildren, bridging cultural divides and celebrating a resilient music that survived the horrors of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime.

Some Voices and Time to Change Debate Dir. Craig plays Ray, a man who hears voices, recently discharged from psychiatric hospital. He meets Laura (Kelly Macdonald), falls in love and begins to wonder whether his tablets are really necessary. Screening in conjunction with the Time to Change campaign, a national initiative challenging stigma around mental health issues in Britain. A panel discussion will take place after the film comprising people with personal experience of hearing voices and other experts in the field.

Despite the proliferation of mainstream cinema, wondermental films continue to be made – gorgeous, radical, poetic, challenging, political, artisanal and dreamlike films which are very hard to find being shown in the UK. The theme chosen for this year is ‘Revolting Bodies’, playing on the double meaning of ‘revolting’ – bodies can repulse and they can incite revolution, they are constantly (r)evolving. 3 Short Film Programmes present an array of vibrant, magnificent films: 1st – made without using a camera lens! Incredible but true. 2nd – showing bodies giving birth, making love, and inscribed with politics. 3rd – films to remind us that the earth’s core is molten lava, and the landscape is constantly revolting. Cherry Kino delights, provokes and astounds with a selection of fascinating wondermental features too. Gustav Deutsch’s inspired ‘FILM IST. a girl & a gun’ collages found footage from

early cinema into a new and critical form, Peter Liechti’s compelling ‘The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy’ depicts a man’s journey towards self-mummification to attain spiritual depth, Kim Gok’s radical and disturbing ‘Exhausted’ is shot on Super 8 and looks at the troubling effect of factory industry on the body and spirit, Gary Tarn’s fascinating ‘Black Sun’ depicts the new vision discovered by a blinded artist, and Jennifer Reeves’ stunning handpainted ode to nature ‘When it Was Blue’. We’ll welcome Canadian artist filmmaker Alex MacKenzie to hand crank his handmade film ‘The Wooden Lightbox: A Secret Art of Seeing’ and to hold a brilliant workshop ‘Flashes of Light’ on making Rayograms on 16mm cine film, and finally, Cherry Kino presents two medium length avant-garde films from the 1920s by Germaine Dulac – ‘The Seashell and the Clergyman’ (considered to be the first Surrealist film) with live improvised music by LIFF regulars Inecto School, and ‘The Smiling Madame Beudet’ (considered the prototype of feminist cinema) with live improvised music by LIMA. In 1978, French artist and filmmaker Hugues de Montalembert was blinded in a violent acid attack while living in New York. This extraordinary film is a portrait of his incredible reaction to such a traumatic event – within a few months he was travelling alone in Indonesia, refusing to be a victim to sightlessness and embracing his new perceptions and awareness. This magnificent film presents the world from the perspective of de Montalembert with an exquisite and radical originality.

The body is a site for resistance; a way of being both ‘revolting’ and ‘revolutionary’. Expect to see an ecstatic birth, macro close ups of bodies, costumes that live and breathe, and some upbeat comedy blended with serious and thought provoking footage. Mixing older 16mm films (Gunvor Nelson) with contemporary film and video (Sam Rebello, Lucy Parker, Derek Woolfenden), the experience will be full of powerful emotions and ideas.

Cherry Kino Shorts 3: Cameraless Films! (Revolting Bodies) Tue 17, 17:00, HYDE Did you know that you can make films without using a camera lens? This selection of sublime and mesmerising experimental films will amaze and confound all who see them. Destabilising the hierarchy of the ‘eye’ (lens) in the concept of ‘vision’ (cinema), these films show that vision can be about seeing with the whole body. Made using a variety of alchemical tools, ranging from pinhole techniques, hand exposing film, letting water ‘speak’, inking, bleaching, decaying the emulsion and growing crystals directly on the film strip.

Exhausted (Gogal) UK Premiere Dir. Gok Kim, South Korea, 2008, 128 mins, Korean, ST, HDCam Sat 7, 14:15, HYDE Prepare to be stunned and possibly outraged (many have walked out) by the originality, brutality and sheer political force of this astounding debut feature. In an industrial wasteland where factories spew their waste into the sky, a dysfunctional couple eke out a hand to mouth existence, barely speaking, their bodies used like machines. Shot on grainy (and often scratched) Super 8, this is a savage film which will shock and provoke with some very difficult scenes, but it is without doubt a truly radical and powerful experience. A very special film.

Named after Man Ray, they are made by transferring the shape of objects to film by placing them directly on the raw film stock and exposing it to light. Reeves hand-painted the footage and made a double projection, creating delicious hues, textures and layers that resemble the (disappearing) natural world she filmed, set to an eerily beautiful soundtrack by Icelandic musician Skúli Sverrisson. The Wooden Lightbox: A Secret Art of Seeing Dir. Alex MacKenzie, Canada, 2007-2009, 60 mins, 16mm Thu 12, 21:00, CARR2 Expanded cinema performed live with a hand-cranked and homemade 16mm projector, this is an exploration and reconfiguration of cinematic apparatus and emulsion with a striking array of entirely hand processed and contact printed film with handmade emulsion. The imagery is both archaic and contemporary - hypnosis, panorama, motion studies, expectation, magic, the dream world and sleight of eye conspire in this intimate and immersive framework. The film speed is varied manually and colour gels tone the black and white images.

Short Film City Introduction Short films are the seeds of cinema, the world’s filmmaking talents grow through making them, and the first shoots of cinema itself were in their form. A fact known to very few filmgoers, the city of Leeds was the location for the first ever moving images, produced in 1888 by Louis le Prince who disappeared mysteriously three years later before he could patent his inventions. Leeds International Film Festival and its Short Film City section of unseen gems celebrate the achievement of the French pioneer through the Louis le Prince International Competition, this year presenting six programmes of outstanding visions from new and emerging talent.

Film City finale on Saturday 14th November, where all the award winners will be announced. Outside of the competitions, Short Film City 2009 presents three special selections that focus on short films from Romania, Poland, and Africa. The Romanian Retrospective, the biggest of its kind ever assembled in the UK, traces the short film origins of a new wave of powerful filmmaking that is gripping cinema audiences. A giant influence on Polish filmmaking since it opened in 1948, the famous National Film School of Łódź presents two programmes of acclaimed student work from the last few years. African cinema makes rare appearances at film festivals these days, so Short Film City is delighted to host two programmes of new short films from the continent, courtesy of the Signes de Nuit Film Festival in Paris.

Animation and experimental shorts have their own international competition programmes, always popular with audiences as they often reveal some of the Film Festival’s most striking discoveries. The best of British short film production is presented in two competitive programmes The Short Film City Pass is only £25, a great value this year and the fruits of the fertile filmmaking way to explore as much of the section as region of Yorkshire are selected for the Short possible.

Animation Shorts, International Competition 1 Wed 11, 18:00, HYDE One of the regular annual favourites of the Film Festival is the International Animation Competition, this year presented in two selections on consecutive nights. The first programme explores the endless search for love, the uphill struggle against loneliness and traditional life. Varmints (UK) shows us a world of urbanization and indifference in which a small creature tries to preserve the beauty he once knew. In the Oscar-winning The House of Small Cubes (Japan), an old man lives in a house which is slowly submerged in sea water.

Animation Shorts, International Competition 2 Thu 12, 18:00, HYDE The second programme of one of the Film Festival’s annual highlights displays animation styles that deal with the senselessness and selfishness of our world. In a near future a man struggles in the efficient and controlled society of Fard (France). The appalling predicament of two children used as slaves by a government is the documentary subject of Slaves (Sweden). In the twisted world of Trickster (Germany), an involuntary clown is exposed to a reckless audience, dreaming of his lovely counterpart and finally finding his cruel archetype.

British Short Film Competition 1 Sat 14, 13:30, CARR1 Enjoy a double bill of great new British shorts in the lead up to the Short Film City finale, where all the awards will be announced including the winner of this competition. Highlights of the first programme include Curtains, the darkly comic tale of a worn out Punch and Judy man on the road to damnation directed by Julian Barratt of The Mighty Boosh. In contrast the delightful documentary The Trolley Man follows Ernest Smith as, single handed, he seeks out discarded shopping trolleys and returns them to their respective owners.

British Short Film Competition 2 Sat 14, 15:30, CARR1 Short Film City continues its journey around the British Isles in this second programme of gems. Highlights include Girl Like Me which follows troubled Lucy as she stumbles dangerously into an adult world she isn’t ready for. Believe is the achingly beautiful tale of a man’s inconsolable grief following the death of his wife and the poetic Kids Might Fly is an offbeat and touching portrait of young people in East London. All audience members can vote for their favourite film in the two British Short Film competition programmes.

Experimental Shorts International Competition Thu 12, 16:30, CARR1 The filmmakers in the International Experimental Shorts Competition have the courage to challenge the audience and try to move the boundaries and limits of modern cinema. In Hanasaari A (Finland) the complex editing of half a million photos depicts the last two years of a coal power plant and the effect on the city landscape. Terminal (Germany) is a mechanical ballet where music and editing are in perfect synergy with the workflow of a container terminal. It took the Italian collective Blu three months of wall painting to create the stunning animation of Muto.

First Short Steps: Short Film City Filmmakers Event Sat 14, 11:00, CARR3 Before the big day of British short film programmes and the awards finale gets underway, join us for a panel event about the first stages of short film production. Film festivals around the world on average reject more than 90% of short films submitted to them for consideration. Filmmaking teams are investing significant financial and human resources in producing shorts but the majority of results are not getting shown. The First Short Steps panel will explore the most common mistakes made by short filmmakers.

The comic adventures of an exhibitionist fly are at the heart of the animated A Film with No Flies On. The reactions of the reserved and introspective Piotr to his wife’s near death characterise the visually stunning black and white Tristis. The unannounced visit of her father reveals all the fragilities of the apparently strong and independent Magda in Nice to See You.

Norwegian Woods International Premiere Dir. They do a great job themselves of tearing each other apart before the local sickle-swinging serial killer takes a turn: stalking his victims in yellow wellies, he is after more livers for his mother. Guaranteed to have you hiding behind your popcorn, the day kicks off with the extreme Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl followed by some particular nastiness in Invitation Only. Third comes the black horror comedy The Revenant which puts a new twist on the zombie genre and the day wraps up with Seventh Moon, the new film from director Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project). Thought Bubble Introduction 2009 sees the Thought Bubble Sequential Art Festival celebrate its third birthday, building on previous years’ success to take place over four days at a variety of venues across Leeds. The festival celebrates sequential art in all its different guises, including everything from superheroes to independent smallpress, and aims to cater to both long-time comic book fans as well as those who have never picked up a graphic novel before. Over the four days there will be art and writing based workshops and masterclasses for young people and adults, as well as panels and talks by industry professionals. The famous book-crossing event - in partnership with six publishers will see hundreds of free comics and graphic novels placed across Leeds to be read and taken home, passed on to friends, or simply left to be found by the next person. As well as this, in partnership with Leeds International Film Festival, a programme of sequential art related film screenings will take place. The festival’s centrepiece event is a one-day convention at Saviles Hall on Saturday 21st which gives fans and audiences the opportunity to meet

some of their favourite comic book creators, and also browse a huge selection of memorabilia on sale, as well as live art installations, portfolio critiques, panel discussions and masterclasses. This year’s festival promises to be the best yet, and looks sure to cement Thought Bubble’s position as one of the best comics-related events in the UK.

Free Thought Bubble Workshops and Masterclasses For Thought Bubble 2009, these special events will be led by industry professionals and activity will include writing for comics, how to create concept art, digital art and how to create your own publication.
