CÉAD míle fáilte to the magical Kingdom of Kerry and the biggest ever Rose of Tralee International Festival. An exceptional team has worked all year to produce a world-class international festival that is presented before you this week and I want to sincerely thank every person involved. This team, many of whom are volunteers, at home and abroad have steered the ship to a successful outcome in partnership with the local civic and business community in Tralee and Irish communities around the world.
The Rose Hotel, Tralee’s new premier 4-star hotel, has magically blossomed from the story of a very special Rose, Dorothy “Dott” Henggeler. It has become the home to our festival and a major new sponsor. Thank you Dick and Eibhlin Henggeler for the added magic.
Our warmest welcome is for Elysha Brennan, our 2015 Rose of Tralee. Elysha’s strength of character, her determination to excel in all of her commitments as Rose of Tralee and her warmth and generosity of spirit has been inspiring. Thank you Elysha.
We extend our appreciation to our sponsors across all levels, especially Kerry County Council, Maldron Hotel Group, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, The Loop at Dublin and Cork Airports, Irish Independent, Guinness Storehouse and Fáilte Ireland.
We have a sparkling future after recently unveiling premium Irish giftware brand, Tipperary Crystal as our new lead sponsor. When the Roses wear the exquisite jewellery pieces that Tipperary Crystal have designed for over five hours of live TV they will herald a new order in jewellery and giftware retail sales in the Irish market.
Finally, to our 65 Roses – this festival is about celebrating each and every one of you. You are our link to Irish communities at home and abroad, we are privileged to host you in Tralee and our dearest wish is that you, your family and friends will treasure the time that you spent in the beautiful Vale of Tralee.
RTÉ play a major role in spreading the goodwill of the Rose of Tralee and this year we are looking forward to watching a new hour-long programme, The Road to the Dome, on RTÉ 1 at 6.30pm on Monday 22nd August.
Anthony O’Gara
Executive Chairman, Rose of Tralee International Festival
As Mayor of Tralee, I am thrilled to welcome you to the Rose of Tralee International Festival 2016.
It’s a tremendously exciting time for the Rose of Tralee International Festival with an extended and expanded programme in place for this year as well as plans for the development of a permanent centre to accommodate the Rose Selection and other events.
The highlight of the social, community and cultural calendar in Tralee is upon us once more, a time when the people of Tralee showcase what is best about their wonderful town and extend the traditional ‘Céad Míle Fáilte’ to those visiting the festival.
I want to acknowledge the enormous efforts of countless volunteers who work behind the scenes to make this wonderful festival a reality.
A special welcome to the Roses who are once again gathering from the four corners of the globe to enchant us with their charm and elegance and to relish the experience of representing their part of the world for their year as Roses.
I am honoured that one of my first functions since I became of Mayor earlier this summer is to extend a welcome to everyone to our county town for this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival. The festival remains the centrepiece of the Kerry summer and remains a key driver of the tourist industry here and in the greater southwest region. Tralee is the Best Large Tourism Town in Ireland for 2016 which highlights the positive visitor experience for those coming to and staying in Tralee. The award is a great reason to celebrate and will be something to build on in the years ahead. The enduring success of the festival is testament to the tenacity and passion of Anthony O’Gara and his team of organisers and volunteers.

With my parents and Daniel O’Donnell Following the big announcement August 2015
A year in the life of the 2015 Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan On the 18th of August 2015, in a split second, my life changed as I knew it. From the moment Dáithí Ó Sé announced on stage “Elysha Brennan, our Meath Rose” it has been one remarkable adventure. I look back on that young woman last year with her lifelong dream of becoming a Rose realised and I smile. I started my Rose journey with wide eyes and an open heart, it has meant everything and more to me. I have grown into a confident, independent and able young woman with indepth insight to myself and the world around me which has developed through my travels and all the wonderful people I have met along the way. My first adventure as the 2015 International Rose of Tralee took me to Kolkata, India with the Hope Foundation. I boarded the plane, solo, with a mixture of excitement, uncertainty and blissful unawareness of the life changing experience that was to follow. Hand on heart, I came home from Kolkata a changed person. “The city of Joy” was nothing I could have ever imagined. The beautiful children I encountered along the way opened my eyes to the extraordinary value of relishing in the “simple things in life” and finding happiness in all the little things we regularly take for granted. In October, came the highlight of my year and the day I will remember for as long as I live. I became an ambassador with the incredible Aoibheann’s Pink Tie charity, when I was selected as the 2015 Meath Rose. Aoibheann’s Pink Tie is a paediatric oncology charity that helps families and children going through cancer in Ireland. They asked me to come along and meet a little girl called Searlait Tywang who had terminal neuroblastoma. Little did I know I was about to sit in the presence of an angel and a true warrior. We sat and talked about anything and everything. We smiled, laughed and sang along to the Frozen soundtrack. She was bubbly, cheeky and we crowned her an honorary Rose that day, complete with her very own sash and tiara.
Searlait passed away in January and I will be forever grateful for knowing this very special soul who graced us with her presence on earth for too short of a time. She touched the hearts of all those she encountered and she is so deeply missed by all. In November the legendary Germany Rose Centre hosted the class of 2015 for their annual Frankfurt Christmas markets. The craic was mighty, we sang and danced until the wee hours of the morning, celebrating the incredible friendships that we had formed in August. I spent the run-up to Christmas in the Middle East with my Abu Dhabi Rose sister and wonderful friend, Deirdre Ward. We spent time in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and got to see all that this unique and diverse place has to offer. This included us both “flinging” ourselves out of planes at 15,000 feet for a charity sky dive for Chernobyl Children’s International. A terrifying and exhilarating experience to say the very least, I have never been happier to put my two feet firmly on the ground afterwards. January, along with freezing conditions and plenty of rain brought with it the start of our 32 county tour of Ireland. Mr Steve Cronly and I took off in my fabulous Kia pro_ceed Rose-mobile and embarked on our mission of visiting each Rose in her county. Who can say they visited all 32 counties of Ireland in one month? ME! The tour was remarkable and some of my fondest memories are from this time. I not so much stepped, but more so LEAPED out of my comfort zone taking part in so many new activities such as zip-lining through the forest, flying a plane over Kinsale, rally-driving a Porsche (twice), getting lost in the Donegal countryside and eating one too many McDonald’s to mention. I saw Ireland in all its charm and glory, we met the most passionate people who are so proud of where they come from and their country. So many kind people who hold the Rose of Tralee Festival so dear to their hearts. “Though we be but small, we are mighty.” The hospitality and welcome both Steve and I received in each county of Ireland is something for which I will be forever thankful - “níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin”.
In March, I set sail along with my Rose sisters and brothers for a State-side adventure. First port of call was Philadelphia to visit our Philly (and Donegal) Rose sister and I’ve been craving Philly cheese steak ever since. The parade in Philly can only be described as “magic”, the support and love that was felt from the Irish American family was extraordinary. We danced to Galway Girl, waved to the ecstatic crowd and marvelled as we approached the infamous iconic steps from the Rocky movie. After Philly it was onto the Big Apple where we were met by our phenomenal 2015 New York Rose Sophie. In New York, I was so blown away by the sheer volume of people I spoke to, who claim to have Irish roots and heritage. They hold Ireland so close and dear to their hearts, spoke so fondly of it and want to know how life is in the “Emerald Isle”. The highlight of my New York trip was without a shadow of a doubt St Patrick’s Day Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral. Wow! It literally took my breath away. Reminiscing about the whole church congregation singing Amhrán na bFhiann still gives me goose bumps. My final oversees visit as the 2015 international Rose of Tralee brought me to Tanzania with Development Perspectives. I look back and I think, ‘WOW! Did I really do that? Is this really my life?’ There have been so many indescribable and remarkable experiences and opportunities. But the thing that has most shaped and influenced my year has really been down to the people I have met and been lucky enough to share this experience with.

As well as numerous oversees visits, it has been the local events around Ireland which have made the most profound impact on me. I have had the opportunity to speak to 100s of school children and young adults. All of this inspired me to launch a social media campaign titled #insideANDout. My aim for the campaign was to boost self-esteem amongst young men and women, to promote positive body image and encourage self-confidence. I am thrilled to say it was a huge success and our goals were achieved.
There have been two very special people who have not only been invaluable to me and an everyday source of comfort but also have become two dear friends. Valerie and Steve, I cannot thank you enough for all you have done for me this year. You have both encouraged me beyond belief to strive for greatness and chase every dream imaginable this year. You have only ever been a phone-call away and have helped me through any challenges that I have come up against this year with a listening ear and a kind word. For this I am eternally grateful.
To my 2015 Rose sisters, the most spectacularly brilliant, intelligent, inspirational and strong women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I have made forever-friends. It has been the greatest honour of my life walking beside you this year and undertaking this once in a lifetime adventure with you.
Finally, to the people who have been my strength, guidance and number one fans from day one - my family. We have been through hell and back together, yet always managed to come out smiling and positive. To my Mum, Dad, brother Sean, sister Kate & Aunty Ciara, thank you for being there for me unconditionally, seeing me through the dark days and celebrating with me through the good ones. To the strongest woman I know, who has made me the person I am today, Mum, you have always encouraged me to fight to become the best possible version of myself, to worry less, smile more and enjoy every beautiful moment that life has to offer because we both have learned how fleeting and unpredictable it can be sometimes. I can never repay you or thank you enough for being by my side and knowing I am in your heart every day, for being my number one advocate and companion this year and every other year of my life.
To the 2015 Rose Escorts, you are the best, biggest and boldest bunch of loveable rogues I have met. Thank you for being there for myself and the Roses, unconditionally as a source of strength, comfort and genuine friendship. Class of 2015, this is only the start of many years of fun, laughter and the best times of our live. Without the support and help of all the sponsors the Rose of Tralee Festival wouldn’t be the phenomenal success it is today. Thank you to Tipperary Crystal (welcome to the family), Kia Ireland, the Dalata Hotel Group, The Loop at Dublin and Cork Airports, Kerry County Council, The Rose Hotel & Bon Secours Hospital Tralee for all that they do for the festival. To the best (I may be a tad biased) team in the world. The Rose of Tralee International Festival team, thank you for welcoming me into your family and making me feel so at home. Never in my life have I met such dedicated, committed and passionate people who work tirelessly in the festival office day in, day out, to ensure the festival remains the roaring success and magical experience that it is today and will continue to be for years to come. Thank you Anthony, Oliver, John, Rebecca, Colm, Bryan and all the extended team who have encouraged and supported me from day one and have been nothing short of amazing.

Once upon a time, there were 65 girls who dreamt of becoming a Rose... There’s more to the Rose of Tralee than being a Rose or a Rose Escort because 65 young girls from all over Ireland have been selected to be paired with an International Rose at the festival. Young girls aged 6-10 were invited to enter the selection process and we are delighted to present the lucky girls who were chosen from the 320 applications. This year’s Rose Buds are proudly sponsored by Crag Cave, Castleisland and McDonald’s, Tralee. We are delighted to donate €2 from each entry to Barretstown Camp, Co Kildare.

Margaret returned on a holiday as a war-widow with two young boys of her own in 1948. This time she decided that Tralee would be an ideal place to rear the boys. She had been working for Trans World Airlines (TWA) in New York, where most of what she was earning was spent on child-minders. But her American war-widow’s pension amounted to three times the average Irish industrial wage at the time.
As a result of her own background Margaret recognised the importance of Ireland to Irish emigrants in North America, and her experience in TWA helped her to spot to an opportunity of working in tandem, with Aer Lingus, when the airline’s Deputy General Manager, Arthur J. Margaret Dwyer was elected President of the Rose of Tralee Festival in 1971, when Florence O’Connor decided to retire. She was always very proud of backing Denis Reen as her successor a couple of years later. He assumed the title of chairman a moving force in the festival for many years. Yet `twas not her beauty alone that won me.
Autumn Winter Fashion Show 2016: A CELEBRATION of style and Kerry’s place as the fashion capital of the southwest will form the centrepiece of the 2016 Rose of Tralee Fashion Show in the Festival Dome on Sunday 21st August. This year’s fashion extravaganza, which was launched in Tralee, will feature all the top boutiques and stores from the Munster region, including top Irish milliners. The Producer of the Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, Celia Holman-Lee, said: “The Rose of Tralee annual fashion show is one of the biggest platforms to showcase and support the indigenous fashion houses in Kerry, Limerick and nationwide. It is a wonderful opportunity for the country’s fashionistas to plan their winter wardrobe and discover the trends you need to know for Autumn Winter.” Year after year, the Rose of Tralee fashion show encourages Irish designs, and this year’s event will see the introduction of the Rose of Tralee Young Student Designer of the Year Awards where student representatives from every design college in Ireland will compete for the title. This section of the event will represent the creativity and vision of the future fashion with students attending: The Grafton Academy, National College of Art and Design, Griffith College, Mallow College of Design and Tailoring, Limerick School of Art and Design, Limerick College of Further Education, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, all in the running to win the Trophy and €500 cash prize, sponsored by Cathriona’s Hair Group.
The finale of this year’s Rose of Tralee Fashion Show will see a display of established top Irish designers, whose names are synonymous with quality, style and individuality accompanied by music from the incredible Michael O’Brien. The prize for the best dressed lady will include a luxury break for two in the luxurious 4-star Killashee Hotel, Co Kildare, a personal shopping experience at Kildare Village complete with a €500 voucher and €500 worth of jewellery from the Rose of Tralee International Festival’s lead sponsor, Tipperary Crystal. The competition will be judged by 2015 Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan and Karen Scanlan, representing Tipperary Crystal. Ireland’s top tourist attraction, Guinness Storehouse, another proud sponsor of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, will also present a prize hamper worth €200 to one lucky member of the audience on the night. Make-up for the show will be applied by the skilled team at CH The Mall Tralee, while Cathriona’s Hair Salon Tralee and Castlegregory will style the models on the night. A wine reception will precede the event while fashion show ticket holders (over 18s only) are invited to attend the aftershow party in the Pavilion Dome featuring the silky sounds of Frankly Bublé.
Tickets to the 2016 Rose of Tralee Autumn Winter Fashion Show are available for only €35 from

Kerry County Museum, Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny Street Open daily 9.30am to 5.30pm. The Rose of Tralee 60 Years of Fashion exhibition brings together the dresses worn by the Roses of Tralee as they graced the stage in the Festival Dome. From 1959 to the present, this eloquent and charming selection of exquisite gowns gives a narrative account of the fairytale history that comes with being a Rose of Tralee. The inspiration for this historic collection was conceived as part of The Rose of Tralee International Festival 50 Year Celebrations in 2009, and relies on the generous loan by the Roses of Tralee of their winning dresses which they have lovingly preserved over the years. Included is at least one dress from each decade, from the 1950s through to Elysha Brennan’s dress from 2015. The oldest dress is a replica of the one worn by the first Rose of Tralee Alice O’Sullivan in 1959.
Significance
Many people remember each Rose of Tralee, but they also make a connection with the dress she wore for her stage interview. In the words of 1989 Rose of Tralee Sinead Boyle: “When people recall me winning they say: ‘You said a poem and wore that beautiful green dress!’”
Changing Fashions In the early years, buying from a designer or from a specialist shop was not an option for Roses. Kathleen Welsh made her dress herself, and a friend of Brenda Hyland’s mother made hers. By the 1980s Roses were shopping in boutiques and attracting the interest of top designers. Nyomi Horgan’s dress was created by a leading Perth designer and required one whole suitcase all to itself when she bought it over from Australia to Tralee. The advent of the Rose of Tralee Selection being televised by RTÉ had a huge influence on the Roses dresses. Designers were keen to get their styles shown on the nation’s most watched programme, and this allowed Roses to choose a dress that was made for them. Roses are now advised on colours that will work on television and to opt for plain fabrics, resulting in fewer of the decorated/ patterned fabrics of years gone by. Styles have moved from a more flared, looser fit, to straight, figure hugging lines, and have also become more revealing over the years. Strapless gowns, off the shoulder designs and plunging backlines have replaced high necks and long sleeves.

Stories Behind the Dresses
Above: Denise Murphy
Kathryn Feeney’s dress was actually bought as a bridesmaid’s dress for her sister’s wedding until her sister decided to elope to a tropical island - fortunately Kathryn managed to put the dress to good use. Many people remember 1991 Rose of Tralee Denise Murphy’s dress, a two-piece with a removable skirt to allow her to Irish dance. 1994 Rose of Tralee Muirne Hurley’s dress was designed to reflect Limerick castle, with a turret and castle motif running throughout. Geraldine O’Grady’s dress was stitched with quotes from Yeats, her favourite poet.
The exhibition is integral to the main collections in Kerry County Museum. Visitors can expect a colourful and nostalgic journey through the Rose of Tralee over the past half a century, that will bring back Rose memories for young and old.
She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer...

DEARBHLADH WALSH
I am 24 and from Cloneyhurke, just outside Portarlington, Co Offaly. I have two brothers and very supportive, caring and hardworking parents. I taught in the Presentation Primary School in Portarlington for three years before taking a career break last summer to make the move to the UAE. Teaching in a school outside of Ireland is a great learning curve for me as well as getting to enjoy the fantastic lifestyle that is on offer for expats in the UAE.
Arizona
Armagh
I am 23 and proud to come from the Grand Canyon State! After graduation from Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, I found employment as a public relations associate at Axiom Public Affairs – a local government affairs firm. My dad was born and raised in Dublin, where my grandad and many extended family members still reside. Participating in the Rose of Tralee is a wonderful way to honour my grandmother’s memory – who was a big reason for my applying.
I’m a 23-year-old Digital Marketer from a beautiful little village called Aghagallon. I graduated from The University of Ulster at Jordanstown in July 2015 with First Class Honours in Marketing and a Diploma in Industrial Studies. I have been privileged to wear the Orchard County camogie jersey. A voluntary school trip to Nairobi in Kenya to work with street boys has inspired my whole outlook on life. It was humbling to meet such deprived yet truly happy children and they enabled me to see the world with new eyes.
Boston & New England
Carlow
At 20, I am a rising senior at Fairfield University, pursuing a double-major in English and Communication accompanied by a Minor in Theatre. I am a proud member of the Honours Program and International English Honours Society, Sigma Tau Delta, seeking to pursue a career in public service. I was recently the first student from Fairfield to be nominated for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. I am also a national and world-ranked Irish Step Dancer. My family ancestry is in County Cork.
I am 22 and have just completed a B.A. in Psychology at University College Dublin. I have a huge passion for positive psychology and mental health and hope to follow this side of psychology through voluntary and community work regardless of my career. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2006 and firmly believe that the drastic improvement in my health four years ago was down to nutrition and lifestyle changes. I love experiencing new people and things while getting outside my comfort zone.
Cavan
Chicago
I am 26 and from the parish of Ballinagh in the beautiful County Cavan. After receiving my Honours Degree in Early Childhood Care and Education, I was accepted into the University of Edinburgh to complete a Professional Graduate Diploma in Primary Education. After qualifying, I completed my first two years of teaching in a primary school in Edinburgh. I now teach in two amazing inner city schools in Dublin, as a Resource teacher and love every minute. Children really are the funniest people!
There is such a strong Irish presence in Chicago, particularly on the south side where I’m from and where the craic is always best! I am 27 and work as the Director of Development at Marist High School. I am passionate about raising money for families who could not otherwise afford Catholic education. I am actively involved in the Chick Evans Scholar Alumni Community. My grandmother, Brigid O’Neill, was born and raised in Maghera, Co. Derry. The McEldowney’s hail from Draperstown, Co. Derry.
Clare
CORK
I am 22 and from Barefield which is a small village just outside Ennis. I recently finished my final year in Mary Immaculate College where I studied Primary School Teaching. I have a keen interest in Irish Traditional Music and have played the fiddle for 15 years. I have participated in many Fleadhs down through the years in solo, group, band and duet competitions. I also have a strong interest in fashion and beauty and last year decided to start my own blog, Styleah.
I come from Knocknagree on the Cork/Kerry border and I’m from a family of seven, four of whom support Cork and three support Kerry. I have taught science and maths in Davis College, Mallow for the past four years and I’ve a keen interest in everything agricultural. As a child, I was the only girl on the underage Knocknagree football team and was also successful for Gneeveguilla Athletics Club. I recently volunteered for three weeks in Brother Beausang School near Nairobi, Kenya.

DERBY
DERRY
I am 27 and studied Youth and Community Development at Leeds Metropolitan University. I currently work closely with young people in the local communities of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire within schools. I thoroughly enjoy creating and supporting young people to improve their opportunities and quality of life. My father is from a village called Carraig Na bhFear, not too far from Blarney, Co Cork. My maternal grandmother is from Milford, north of Cork city. I am the eldest of five children.
I’m 26 and from Newbridge in the heart of south Derry. Fun fact - at the age of four, I was able to rhyme off the names of the Derry 1993 All-Ireland winning team (very proud of this). I’m the youngest of six children and have a large extended family with 74 first cousins! I’m a ‘mature student’ finishing off my degree in Communication with Public Relations at Ulster University, Jordanstown. I’m only in a bad mood if I’m hungry!
Donegal
Down
I am 24 and proud to be born and bred in lovely Letterkenny. In 2013, I graduated with a first class honours degree in Early Childhood Care and Education, a field of study that I feel so passionate about ever since I was a teenage babysitter. For the past three years I have been teaching preschool and afterschool children in a local crèche and Montessori school just two minutes from my house. Some may call me a bit of a ‘bootcamp fanatic’ (who doesn’t like burpees and lunges!).
I was the youngest of three girls and the baby until a wee brother, Pól Óg, arrived six years later. ‘Middle child syndrome’ was never going to be an issue when given the distinctive name Ferdia - which lasted for three days until it was changed to the even more unique Fainche. Ever since early childhood I have always done my own thing. The McCormacks come from a long line of hill farmers and I am now in the tenth generation to live in Grinan.
Dubai
Dublin
I grew up in Yorkshire and am the eldest of four children. My Irish heritage comes from my mother’s side, the McEvoys who hail from Newbridge, County Kildare. I graduated from Durham University with a joint honours degree in English and Education and from there went on to study my P.G.C.E at the University of Cambridge. I have previously taught in Uganda and decided to make the move from London to Dubai last year. I am a keen runner and charity fundraiser and happiest when combining the two.
I am a 25-year-old primary school teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I can remember. I am currently facilitating an online development course in Mindfulness for the primary teachers in conjunction with ChillOut Ireland and the INTO, this is something I am particularly proud of. I have a great love and interest in the area of Special Education. I volunteered/taught in ABACAS Special School Kilbarrack (January 2015 to date every Tuesday/Thursday). I love lifting heavy weights and currently leg press 220kgs.
Fermanagh
FLORIDA
I’m 25 and from Kinawley, a small village on the Fermanagh/Cavan border. The youngest of five, I am a very family orientated person and I love spending time with family, especially my four beautiful nephews. I graduated from University of Ulster, Jordanstown in 2012 with a degree in Speech and Language Therapy. I am currently a Speech and Language Therapist in Belfast, working with adults with communication and swallowing difficulties. During my time as the Fermanagh Rose I have chosen to support Stroke Association NI.
I’m a Florida native, an Irish citizen and I’ve just graduated from the University of Florida with my degree in Psychology and Communications. I plan on pursuing a career in the legal field, specifically as a child advocate attorney, defending the legal rights of children and acting as their positive voice. I enjoy reading motivational books, volunteering in my community, boating and all other outdoor activities the Florida weather permits. I’m 22, my mother is from Saggart, Co Dublin and my Dad is fourth generation Irish.
GALWAY
GERMANY
I’m 23 and hail from the close parish of Ballinderreen in South Galway where I live with my parents, brother and sister. I sing, play the concertina, piano and guitar. I was exposed to agricultural livelihood from a young age by my father. This planted a seed in my mind from the tender age of four, when I decided I wanted to be a vet. Having spent five years studying at UCD, that dream finally came true as I qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon this May.
Born in the US, my Irish connections are in Sligo. My Irish grandmother and mother were both incredible role models to me. I am a 27 year old lawyer working in Frankfurt for the world’s largest immigration law firm, Fragomen Global LLP. After my studies, I travelled to Europe after receiving an Alexander Von Humboldt Research Fellowship. Moving to many different places throughout my life has shown me the true worth of having Irish heritage. From bumping into Irish who are based around the world, the Irish are truly an open and friendly community.

When I learned about the opportunity to celebrate my family’s Irish heritage, I excitedly applied to be a Rose. I grew up learning about my family’s history. I vividly remember the first time my father read from a folder of documents that were passed down through his family. I learned about my distant grandparents who lived in County Derry and other relatives from Dublin. As for me, Louisville, Kentucky is home. I am a 22-year-old college senior at the University of Kentucky, where I study Accounting and Marketing.
Sport is one of the big passions in my life and I’ve a love for all things GAA-related. I played Gaelic football with my local club Killarney Legion for many years and I started doing Tae-Kwon-Do when I was 9, achieving black belt status when I was 17. I completed my degree in Law and Economics last year and I’m currently studying for my masters in human rights law and criminal justice. My goal is to someday work for the United Nations.

It was always my ambition to be a primary school teacher and so I was delighted to graduate with honours, and am now teaching in Presentation Primary School Portarlington. This is a huge school with over 700 pupils and a staff of almost 49 women and 1 man (God bless him)!
I am 26 and hail from Aughavas in the south of Leitrim. Loving my time during the week in Dublin working as a HR Professional, I leave it all behind me come 4pm on a Friday when I make the journey back home to Leitrim, where my mother greets me with a welcoming smile and, if I am lucky, a cup of tea. Hello! I am 24 and this summer have completed my law exams! I completed my very first legal work experience in Dublin back when I was 14 years old in the Four Courts. During my lunch breaks I sat in on the “Lying Eyes” trial in which a woman hired a hitman to kill her husband and stepson, and after that I was certain law was for me. I was born and brought up in London however my Mum is a Galway girl hailing from Ardrahan.

Hey, y’all! I’m 27 and I grew up in Durham, North Carolina, just outside the capital city of Raleigh. I’ve been acting professionally for about four years, and have won awards for both solo and ensemble performances. I recently graduated with a BA in Theatre Performance and served as an officer for Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honours fraternity. Another passion is music composition. I’m also trying to learn the bodhrán. Wish me luck! I can trace my family’s Irish heritage to Carrickfergus, Co Antrim.
Growing up I was the tomboy in the house playing all kinds of sport, from GAA to rugby, and showing a huge interest in engineering. I’m 18 and just finished secondary school, and awaiting that dreaded letter with the results of my leaving certificate, which should arrive when I’m in Tralee on the 17th of August. I plan on studying aeronautical engineering, in UL, in September and I hope to pursue a career in flying for the air corps someday.

Ottawa
For my 22 years in this beautiful world, I have lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. My ancestry comes mainly from County Donegal and Connaught on my father’s side of the family. I studied ballet under University of Cincinnati’s prestigious dance program for one year. However, I developed a persistent and painful ankle condition. After my ankle injury, I found a hoop and started learning the flow art using YouTube, despite being limited to one foot. Fast forward four years, and I have performed my hoop dance in six states.
At 24, I’m a proud Irish-French Canadian. I grew up in a suburb of Montreal called DeuxMontagnes and my Irish roots stem from St. Mullins, Co. Carlow and Ardfert, Co. Kerry. I attended the University of Ottawa where I completed my bilingual Honours Bachelor of Arts with Specialization in Linguistics and a minor in Celtic Studies. I live on a Hereford cattle farm west of Ottawa and although I am new to farming, I love working with the cows, growing my own vegetables and living in the country.

My Irish ancestry is from my father’s family from Leitrim, Tipperary and Kerry.
I’m a 23 year old primary school teacher in the fabulous Scoil Mhuire Convent Primary School in Roscommon Town, the school that I was educated in. I’m a loyal Roscommon supporter and GAA plays a huge part in my life – wouldn’t it be wonderful to see ‘The Rossies’ win an All-Ireland Football title? I’m the ultimate tea queen – I love a good strong cup of tea with a dash of milk! My sense of direction is appalling and I have a fear of lizards and snakes!
San Francisco
Scotland
I was born in San Francisco 26 years ago and grew up playing soccer and softball, with zero ability to Irish dance. Thankfully, my inability to jig or reel did not keep me from Ireland. My parents were born and raised in Leitrim. I spent the summer of 2012 in Nepal, playing soccer with street children during the day, and working to rescue trafficked young women at night. This past January, on a medical mission trip to the Philippines, I decided I want to pursue a degree in Medicine.
I grew up in Omagh, County Tyrone. When I finished school in Loreto Grammar, I moved to Belfast to study for an English degree in Queen’s University. For four years I lived with friends and loved every moment of student life. I was thrilled to be accepted into a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in Glasgow University. I’m 25, currently living in Dublin. I am a full time professional Irish dancer since the age of 19 and a teacher at my mother’s school, Mahon School of Irish Dance in Kilanerin, Co Wexford. I competed for 20 years and achieved numerous titles internationally and regionally, such as European, All Ireland, and South Eastern Championships. I have travelled the world since with many dance shows. Recently I have been studying Sports Massage Therapy, another passion of mine, as well as being a fluent Irish Speaker.

I’m 26 and I was amazed to be selected, having shed over eleven stone in recent years. I always had a sense of hope and what was to come. However, once I had reached my goal weight my confidence and belief in myself was the same as it was when I weighed over 22 stone. Three years on, life experiences and soul searching have led me to learn who I am as a person, emotionally, physically and spiritually and be content in myself.
I am 27 and lucky enough to live on the border of the North Yorkshire Moors and the coast. I am also proud to be involved in the Irish community and local Catholic Church in my hometown. I am a 2010 graduate of Media Studies at Sheffield Hallam University. I am currently working as a Marketing Officer for a local arts and entertainment venue. My father is from Dublin and my maternal grandmother was from Kilkenny. My maternal grandfather was from the remote village of Furnish, Connemara.

OfficiaL PROGRAMME 2016
Yet `twas not her beauty alone that won me.
WE are delighted to introduce the 65 young gentlemen who will accompany our Roses to a host of events throughout the week of the Festival. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it! A Rose Escort needs to wear a creaseless tux like he was born into it, but to be a great Rose Escort he needs to have the Bond swagger, the diplomatic touch – and critically at this event, an understanding of the timeless tradition that has stood the Rose of Tralee festival.
The 2015 Rose Escort of the Year, Shane Kenny, said: “Having been selected as the Escort of the Year was nothing short of a great honour. The opportunity to represent a fantastic group and to accompany our Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, at numerous events has been a brilliant experience. I’ve travelled extensively attending many charity events and Rose reunions while also working closely with a fantastic Rose of Tralee Team who couldn’t have done any more for me. I’ve made memories and friendships that will be cherished forever.”

Celebration of Light Tralee Bay Wetlands, 8pm • Tuesday 16th August Organised by Recovery Haven Tralee, “Celebration of Light” has become a very important community event which gives an opportunity for all those whose lives have been touched by cancer to come together and share experiences and celebrate the lives of families and friends. Now in its eighth year, this competition is a prestigious event on the GAA Juvenile calendar in Ireland and it will be organised by Coiste Trá Lí under the banner of the Rose of Tralee International Festival. This year’s event will see 16 teams from Kerry and beyond battle it out for the Rose Cup and Rose Shield. The Rose Cup and Rose Shield will be presented to the winning captains by the Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan and James O’Donoghue from Oaklands Daybreak on the Listowel Road, Tralee.

Unmask For Pieta The Rose Hotel • 17th to 23rd Aug “Unmask For Pieta”, an initiative pioneered by Shane Kenny, 2015 Rose Escort of the Year, features honest and frank contributions from his fellow Rose Escorts and Roses to the conversation about mental health which is topical, relevant and worthy of open discussion in 2016. It’s striking that so many people are all bound by a certain age category because of the Festival – Roses are 18 to 27, Escorts 21 to 30. That demographic is a prime age group to experience all the pressures associated with challenging mental health. Many of them have created individual artistic masks to simply illustrate their own personal understanding of challenging mental health experiences in physical form for others to interpret. None has a professional artistic background - they are ordinary, yet exceptional young people willing to “Unmask” for the benefit of their peers. It’s open to the public and it is all in support of Pieta House.

We
VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEERS have been the life-blood of the Rose of Tralee International Festival since 1959 and this year’s Festival will bring together many new recruits to work alongside some experienced members of the team. We are delighted to introduce you to some of the team. James Finnegan has volunteered with various organisations since he was at school. In recent years he has been involved with Tralee Chamber Alliance, Tralee Musical Society and since 2015, with the Rose of Tralee International Festival. Last year, I was involved primarily in the Park Activities, with my fellow Team Leaders and Volunteers, assisting with everything in the park from the daily Family Town Show to visiting performers, displays, a Parachute jump, food stalls, arts and crafts, bonny baby and dog shows – literally something for all the family. I was invited to get involved last year, and was delighted to accept. I had always enjoyed the Festival with my family, and consider it to be a privilege to make a small contribution to its ongoing success. I was humbled and honoured to be named the Volunteer of the Festival last year but perhaps most memorable of all are the laughs shared, the challenges faced and the friendships made with my fellow Volunteers.
Affectionately known by his fellow Volunteers as “Grandad”, Martin Brosnan has been a volunteer with the Rose of Tralee for over 20 years and he has said he has finally come to the end of his “trial period”. I work in the Build and Break team, which is basically everything from making sure that the stages for the Acts are up and in good order, to ensuring that the barriers are up and in the right place for all the various activities and parades, to dismantling everything when it is finished and needed elsewhere. It is not glamorous, but without it the Festival simply could not function. Everything is a highlight but most important is the craic and banter with and between the fellow Volunteers. One time we sent a lad to Kerry Airport to pick up a passenger “Harry D Hare” and his cousin “Roger D Rabbit”. He was waiting with a placard with the two names, but when they did not appear, he was told they had changed their plans and was sent to wait for them at the Train Station, again with the placard. They say that love stories begin at the Rose of Tralee International Festival and the saying could not be as true, when it comes to Michelle Reidy and her husband Gavin Gallagher who were married this year in Tralee. They are both Rose of Tralee Volunteers who love being part of the team. Michelle had previously been a Volunteer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I worked with Dad in the Dome and anywhere else that I may have been needed. I returned to the fold three years ago when I moved back to Tralee and it was nice to meet new friends after being away from Tralee for a long time. I enjoy being on the Control Room Street Team. Gavin is Leader of the Street Closures Team. I was unemployed and needed to find something to do to keep myself occupied, so I signed-up to be a Rose of Tralee Volunteer four years ago. It has been one of the best experiences of my life to date working with so many dedicated people who I am proud to call my friends and “minions”. Ann Leahy O’Shea has said that she has worked in every possible area as a Volunteer and she is now the Market Coordinator and Box Office Manager for the Street Events. I started as a junior steward back in 1995 at the age of 14, under the guidance of Mossie Brosnan but more so with Cliff O’Sullivan. Not only did they mentor and mind me but they became lifelong 43 OfficiaL PROGRAMME 2016 friends along with many, many other colleagues throughout the years.
What attracted me to the Festival? Well that is more “who” than “what” - my uncle Martin Brosnan aka Grandad. He went to my parents and asked them could I become a steward. At the time, my mother was dead set against it. “As well being a girl, it’s not the most girly thing to be doing at 14,” she said. On the other hand my father said it would be a great idea and overruled Mum. Little did he realise how much of an impact it would have on me or how much it would become very much part of who I am and what I do best! Karl Johnson started volunteering in 2013 after his friend suggested that they sign up “as it looked like good fun”. I volunteered with hospitality for the first year and really enjoyed it. Our main job on the hospitality team was to look after the needs of all of the performing acts’ needs during the festival. This involved organising the Green Room before concerts. In 2014 and every following year since, I have worked as part of the Park Team. I thought I might be suitable to this team as I am a teacher and enjoy interacting with children and their families. I find this “work”, if you can call it that, really rewarding and enjoyable. Personal highlights from my time working in the Park are things like taking part in circus workshops with children, helping them with arts and crafts, and getting a picture with “Leafy Louis” last year! I sometimes also steward some of the events in the evening including the concerts. I love listening to live music, so to be able to stand so close to the stage as part of volunteering is a bonus for me. Above all else I keep coming back to the festival as a volunteer for one main reason: My fellow Volunteers. The Rose of Tralee Volunteer Team is filled with the most likeable and like-minded people. Everyone is there to help each other out, have a laugh, and to enjoy the festivities. The work can sometimes be tiring but the sense of friendship and camaraderie always makes it worthwhile. I would consider every person I have volunteered with a friend at this stage, and no doubt I will make more this year. The general public would not enjoy the parades, fireworks displays, live music and street entertainment without the presence of an efficient, skilled and dedicated team of Volunteers. Kerry Volunteer Centre, play a vital role in supporting Volunteers and organisations in Kerry, and they assisted in the recruitment process again this year. If you are over 18 and would like to be a Volunteer, application forms will be available from www.roseoftralee.ie from April 2017.
