OfficiaL PROGRAMME 2017

A year in the life of the 2016 Rose of Tralee, Maggie McEldowney On behalf of the entire Rose of Tralee family, it is my distinct privilege and honor to welcome you to the 2017 Rose of Tralee Festival. A year ago this time, I was bursting with pride flaunting my Chicago sash, trying my best to adhere to the advice I received, ‘Take it all in! Enjoy yourself, make new friends, have a few laughs - you made it; now it’s time to relax and have fun!’ Throughout my two weeks, I had the opportunity to know and befriend the 2016 Roses of Tralee. Our class, like the others before us, is truly one-of-a-kind. Every girl I met, I was awed by something unique about her - tenacity, success, charisma, sense of humor, accomplishments, and the list could go on. I thought, ‘it’s going to be really cool to personally know whichever Rose they choose to be the 2016 Rose of Tralee, and how fun it will be to tell my kids one day how I took part in this whirlwind festival… I was the last one I thought they’d pick up there on that stage, hence the look of utter bewildered shock when Dáithí yelled, “CHICAGOOO!” And right then my year (and as I came to realize my life) changed instantly. The 2016 Roses and Rose Escorts were very lucky in a sense that we were all able to experience Tralee together. In years past, the Regional Festival was held in Portlaoise in June, and the 32 Roses to be interviewed on the televised portion were announced. This year, I’d like to think it is a unique aspect of our class. My time as your 2016 Rose of Tralee was never about me. It was about, what we, as a class, all 130 of us Roses and Rose Escorts, have accomplished together all over the world. This Festival is not about celebrating perfection, because that’s not real - it’s celebrating genuine, hardworking, compassionate, driven Irish women in today’s world - how we’re making a difference and a notable impact in a countless number of ways in our respective communities. What mattered to me most this year - I was tasked with representing something bigger than myself - to be the ambassador for this Festival and for some of the most incredible men and women I’ll ever have the pleasure of knowing. The children I met in Kolkata reaffirmed my faith in the human spirit
I guess that’s how I hope to be remembered; the one from the remarkable class of Roses, who tried to show through her actions that a little help here and there can make a big difference. That I’m not a millionaire, but I can take part in a race that raises money for local charities. I am proud to have completed the Tralee Half Marathon and through that raised over $3,000 for the Young Irish Fellowship Club charities in Chicago, and for the Baile Mhuire Centre in Tralee. I don’t have any impressive property to donate, but I’m proud I donated my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths - making wigs for children with cancer. I am busy enough, but I’m honored to volunteer as an Evans Scholar Alumni and pack food for the hungry and homeless in my city. I’m delighted to say I worked with countless charities this year, like the Mulliganeers, Team Kevin, and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation to name a few. Here’s the coolest part - Roses and Rose Escorts from every corner of this globe were supporting charities and causes near and dear to their hearts. People from Chicago have been in remarkable form. My family has received phone calls, letters and visits from friends, neighbors, and even strangers - congratulating us, sharing their story of their connection to the Festival and where they were when they heard Dáithí say ‘Chicago’. I get the chills every time I watch footage of 50 friends and family surrounding the TV at Fado Irish pub where they streamed the announcement, the never-ending drumroll, the eruption of cheering when Chicago was announced, and the look of pride on my grandfather’s face. Thank you sincerely to Seamus O’Neill and for my O’Neill family in Maghera for welcoming me into my Grandma Bea’s old home on my first trip back to Ireland after the Festival. I was fortunate enough to be accompanied on two separate trips by cousins Katie McAlinden and Mary Claire Brady, along with my lovely better half Brendan Byrne, during my Rose adventures in Ireland. During my time in Ireland this year, I couldn’t count the number of times I’d watch a wee little grin appear on Holding a brave, sweet boy I met in Vesnova with Chernobyl Children’s International

a mother’s face as she raced off to find her toddler for a photo. There’s nothing better than walking into a primary school auditorium and watch a room full of children’s faces light up when they realized who I was. How many grown men would ask for a photo, but would always start with ‘now this is for me granny…’? I made it to 27 counties during eight visits to Ireland, stopping at schools, stores, farms, and met countless strangers who quickly became friends along the way. This Festival afforded me the opportunity to take service abroad and volunteer my time in Kolkata, India with the Hope Foundation in November. When you meet people like Maureen Forrest and the selfless volunteers who live there year round, it is a mixed bag of emotions I had to sort through. I met three young women who worked as little girls in a garbage dump, pulling out plastic, metal, things they could sell on the street. They explained they are now bilingual and qualified to apply for a government funded school and because of the Hope Foundation, they are the most educated people in their families, giving their loved ones hope for the future. I was also granted the opportunity to visit Vesnova children’s mental asylum with 19 of my fellow Roses and Rose Escorts of 2016. There are no words to fully prepare you for what you experience on this trip. There are truly heart-wrenching circumstances and conditions that leave you feeling helpless; but what we all walked away with was an overwhelming sense of love for the children of Vesnova. We were lucky enough to meet the remarkable Adi Roche herself; the number of lives she’s saved, impacted for the better, is countless. I remember the day I got home, I hugged my mom and cried, knowing I just spent a week holding children who will never see theirs again. There are nights I lie awake and pray to God someone is loving and caring for them the way we did when we were there.

I was also fortunate to visit Roses in 10 US States from coast to coast, two cities in Canada, a visit to London, and two short stop-offs in Germany and Abu Dhabi. A Festival with such genuine values can only start with a group of people with hearts of pure gold, and that is our Rose Festival Team. On behalf of the 2016 Roses and Escorts, thank you sincerely for quite simply the experience of a lifetime. Anthony and Oonagh O’Gara, you treated me like one of your own this year. To Valerie, I’ve never known a kinder, more nurturing soul! You’ve taken such wonderful care of me, scheduling, planning, and organizing the mayhem this year. Steve - thank you for leading our whistle-stop tour of Ireland; this Festival is lucky to have someone as hardworking and dedicated as you, and I’m lucky to call you a very good friend. John Drummey, thank you so much for making our voices heard. We work hard during our time as Roses and you make sure people know about it. I’m sure everyone is hoping the next girl doesn’t have our same sense of humor, but I can most certainly say I’ve enjoyed laughing with you at all our stupid(-ly brilliant) puns. To Rebecca, I’ll never be able to thank you enough for pushing me through the last few miles of our half marathon! The impeccably witty and talented Dáithí Ó Sé, thank you for being the best spotlight for our Roses and allowing us to feel comfortable on stage. A special shout out to my talented, smart, and beautiful little Kerrywoman, Kate Fitzsimons, for being the best Rose Bud in the world! Tipperary Crystal adds the perfect sparkle to our beautiful Roses. Their exquisite jewellery is a joy to wear, while I was overwhelmed by the magnificent homeware that I received as part of my prize. I have so many cherished memories from my stays at the gorgeous Rose Hotel. Thank you to the Maldron and the Glenroyal Hotels for your generous hospitality during my visits, and to McElligotts Tralee and KIA Ireland for your car

sponsorship to make sure I made it to all these events on time (early, if Steve was driving)! Flowers.ie graced me with the most gorgeous bouquet of Roses I’ve ever seen! Reilly’s Daughter in Chicago graciously sponsored me for the Chicago selection and Kyree Forrest designed my stage gown, a masterpiece that made me feel so beautiful on stage. My own Chicago Centre Director, Mary Kay Gavin Marmo, always makes every girl who goes out for the Chicago Rose feel like a part of the Chicago Centre family. To our festival volunteers - YOU are truly the heart and soul of this Festival. I don’t think people realize how many Tralee natives and local residents put their lives on hold to make sure us outof-towners feel welcomed and celebrated. You are the reason Tralee shines over these few weeks, and we are so incredibly grateful for your dedication to making this Festival outstanding.
Proud to meet former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson
Our Rose Escort of the Year, John Slowey, thank you for being a true gentleman and for your hard work and dedication to our class throughout the year. I have been brought up by two of the most selfless, caring, loving individuals, and I’m lucky to call them ‘mom and dad’. Because of them, I have the greatest role model and big brother, Dan, and now his beautiful wife Molly. Particularly this year, you were all the calming end of a stressed phone call, my home base and rock, the laugh at the end of a busy day, the happy faces I missed so dearly when I came home from a long trip, the people who have been there every single step of the way from day one. I am fortunate enough to have my supportive and wonderful parents by my side here in Tralee for my first day as your 2016 Rose of Tralee, and now for my last days. To our magnificent 2017 Roses, congratulations! These few whirlwind days, we are here to celebrate you and your impressive array of successes and accomplishments, both individually and as a group! I look forward to meeting as many new faces as possible over the next few days, but thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your love and support this year. You certainly know how to make a girl from the South Side of Chicago feel very, very special.

The Guinness Storehouse, Ireland’s leading tourist attraction, has long been a popular stop on the Rose Tour and 2017 was no different. Located in the heart of the St James’s Gate Brewery, the Guinness Storehouse is the home of the Black Stuff. The Roses’ journey began at the bottom of the world’s largest pint glass and continued through seven floors filled with interactive experiences that fuse the long brewing heritage with Ireland’s rich history. Each of the Roses was presented with a certificate after learning how to pull the perfect pint.

Dancing with the Stars Winner & Kerry legend
Aidan O’Mahony
to guest at Rose of Tralee Fashion Show
RTÉ’s Dancing with the Stars winner and former Kerry footballer, Aidan O’Mahony, will set the catwalk alight in the Festival Dome as the special guest at this year’s Rose of Tralee Fashion Show on Sunday 20th August. Earlier this year the Rathmore man successfully swapped his football boots for dancing shoes to win the Dancing with the Stars series on TV and now he’s looking forward to making an appearance at Ireland’s biggest annual fashion extravaganza. This year’s fashion show, which was launched in July at Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee, will feature all the top boutiques and stores from the Munster region, including top Irish milliners presented by The Holman Lee Agency. The production team behind this year’s Rose of Tralee Fashion Show will include Asta Lee and Cecile Lee Coveney and a team of top models. One of the producers of the Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, Celia Holman Lee, said: “The Rose of Tralee annual fashion show is one of the biggest platforms to showcase and support the indigenous fashion houses in Kerry, Limerick and nationwide. If you are a fashionista, and you like your clothes, this is the show to be at because it’s the first Autumn Winter fashion show in the country each year. It gives you all the ideas, tips, colours and shapes, what’s in and what’s not, which is very important if you are shopping.” Year after year, the Rose of Tralee fashion show encourages Irish designs, and this year The Holman Lee Agency are thrilled to introduce the Rose of

The style on the night won’t be confined to the catwalk as one lucky woman in the audience will win a magnificent prize worth €1000 for being the Best Dressed Lady. The winner will receive €500 worth of jewellery from Tipperary Crystal, lead sponsor to the Rose of Tralee International Festival and a two-night Serenity Escape at The Rose Hotel, official home to the Roses during the festival. The Serenity Escape packages will include: 2 nights’ accommodation, Dinner on one night of your choice in the Park Restaurant, Breakfast each morning in the Park Restaurant and at Serenity Spa enjoy a 55-minute ELEMIS facial, chosen specifically for your skin after consultation with your Spa therapist, and a deeply relaxing full body Swedish Massage, providing a sense of well-being.

The Rose of Tralee 60 Years of Fashion exhibition brings together the dresses worn by the Roses of Tralee as they graced the stage in the Festival Dome. From 1959 to the present, this eloquent and charming selection of exquisite gowns gives a narrative account of the fairy-tale history that comes with being a Rose of Tralee. The inspiration for this historic collection was conceived as part of The Rose of Tralee International Festival 50 Year Celebrations in 2009, and relies on the generous loan by the Roses of Tralee of their winning dresses which they have lovingly preserved over the years. Included is at least one dress from each decade, from the 1950s through to Maggie McEldowney’s dress from 2016. The oldest dress is a replica of the one worn by the first Rose of Tralee, Alice O’Sullivan in 1959 (pictured far right).
Significance Many people remember each Rose of Tralee, but they also make a connection with the dress she wore for her stage interview. In the words of 1989 Rose of Tralee Sinead Boyle: “When people recall me winning they say: ‘You said a poem and wore that beautiful green dress!’” Changing Fashions In the early years, buying from a designer or from a specialist shop was not an option for Roses. Kathleen Welsh made her dress herself, and a friend of Brenda Hyland’s mother made hers. By the 1980s Roses were shopping in boutiques and attracting the interest of top designers. Nyomi Horgan’s dress was created by a leading Perth designer and required one whole suitcase all to itself when she bought it over from Australia to Tralee. The advent of the Rose of Tralee Selection being televised by RTÉ had a huge influence on the Roses dresses. Designers were

keen to get their styles shown on the nation’s most watched programme, and this allowed Roses to choose a dress that was made for them. Roses are now advised on colours that will work on television and to opt for plain fabrics, resulting in fewer of the decorated/ patterned fabrics of years gone by. Styles have moved from a more flared, looser fit, to straight, figure hugging lines, and have also become more revealing over the years. Strapless gowns, off the shoulder designs and plunging backlines have replaced high necks and long sleeves.
The exhibition is integral to the main collections in Kerry County Museum. Visitors can expect a colourful and nostalgic journey through the Rose of Tralee over the past half a century, that OfficiaL PROGRAMME will bring back Rose memories for young and old.

Abu Dhabi Niamh Kelly
I am a general nurse from Ballyea, Co Clare. I graduated from University of Limerick in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After a two year spell in Surrey, England, my friends and I decided to seek pastures greener – or rather sandier! – and moved to Abu Dhabi and now work at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Moving to Abu Dhabi has been an amazing experience. Populated with a rich Irish ex-pat population, home is never too far away.

Armagh
I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Education and Human Sciences from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. I live and work in Chandler, Arizona and am committed to creating a positive impact to the communities that I live and work in. Currently, I am working with the City of Chandler in a neighborhood rehabilitation grant to assist low income families. My family’s Irish heritage originates on my mother’s side in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and on my father’s side in Co. Wexford.
I am 25 and was raised in the beautiful ‘Orchard County’. I hope to eventually pursue a career in the Events Industry - it is my aim to create exciting and immersive events and through live music, theatre and other creative industries, and attract even more tourists to our wonderful country! I have been very passionately involved in theatre my entire life. I have played a variety of roles in Beauty and the Beast, Calamity Jane, Pride and Prejudice and Les Miserables. I am currently Duty Manger at the Grand Opera House Belfast, one of Northern Ireland’s most prestigious theatres.
Boston & New England
Carlow
My Dad is from Wexford, and my Mom is from Ennis, Co. Clare - they met 30 years ago when my Dad attended the famous Bunratty Castle Banquet where my Mom was a singer - my Irish fairytale. I’m 26 and live in the heart of Boston, where everyone dreams of being Irish! I was born in Boston, but my most vibrant childhood memories are from when I was living in Ahane Co. Limerick. My Irish heritage has guided my exciting career as a lifestyle and fashion model here in Boston.
I come from a little rural area in South Kildare, known as Maganey. Dad is a proud Lilywhite while Mam is a Carlow woman from the village of Palatine. Following on from school, I studied a Fetac level 5 course in Applied Social Care. From this, I studied year one of Applied Social Care in St. Patricks College, Carlow. At the time, I was working as a part time waitress in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow. I have a great love for Irish Dancing and Gaelic Football plays a massive part in our home.

Chicago
I’m from Ballyconnell which lies at the foot of the Slieve Russen Mountain. I am 23 and have been working in St Michael’s National School, Ballyfermot for the past three years. I began Irish dancing at the age of three, soon after I took up modern dance and this was the start of my love affair with dancing. One of the highlights of my Irish dancing career to date was performing for President Michael D. Higgins in the Áras at the New Year celebrations for the international ambassadors in Ireland. I now run a modern dance school in my local area.
I am 27 years of age and grew up in Kanturk, Co. Cork with my parents, Charles, a local dairy farmer and Brigid, a former nurse and proud Kilkenny woman. I’m based in Beloit, Wisconsin working as a Technical Business Development Manager. I enjoy travelling, adventure and exploring new cultures. To date, I’ve visited nineteen states across North America and have explored much of Europe and Asia. I’m a member of the ‘Ireland Network Chicago’, a business and social network for the Irish diaspora as well as a committee member of the ‘Professional Irish Women of Chicago Organization’, where we organise events to honour the professional Irish women of Chicago.

CORK
I have lived in Sixmilebridge for most of my life. I moved to Dublin for my job a year and a half ago, but as I am a home bird I try to go home to Clare as much as I can. I will turn 25 during the week of the festival. I studied Economics and Sociology in the University of Limerick and graduated in 2015. I work in Bank of Ireland in the credit and debit cards section. Some of my hobbies include baking, travelling, fitness and Ed Sheeran! I love to bake for any occasion, especially if there are any birthdays in work. My manager has nicknamed me “Chief Do-gooder”!
I am 27 years old, daughter of Pat & Mary, and younger sister to Patrick, Kieran and John Paul. Aghada, my haven, is a beautiful coastal area situated at the mouth of Cork Harbour. I began to work for Apple in Cork in 2013 where I have enjoyed four fantastic years in the Operations department. Outside of work, sport is my biggest passion. I have been playing football with Aghada for 15 years and have had the honour of captaining our Junior team twice. My second love is music.

I am 20 Years old and was born and raised in the beautiful city of Darwin where I have developed a love for ethnicity, adventure and the picturesque territory outback. My Irish heritage is prominent through both my mother and father’s bloodline, with my ancestors originating from Galway, Monaghan, Clare and Limerick. I began Irish dancing when I was six years old with a local school and still continue to dance to this day. I am currently working as a Traffic Coordinator with Channel Nine Darwin, with my work focusing on the scheduling of advertisements.
I grew up in Staffordshire with my parents, Dermott - a Managing Director of St Phillips Care, and Ann - a former nurse and proud Kilkenny woman. My grandad is from Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon and my grandmother was from Co. Limerick, Pallas Green. I am now a primary school teacher and a proud ambassador of the Meningitis Foundation. Since being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after a car accident I have linked with the charity Mind to help support other people who may be suffering with other forms of mental health.

I live in Letterkenny and feel so privileged to be from Donegal - the county that was recently named “the coolest place on the planet” by the National Geographic. I have been dancing and performing on stage from a young age, having trained in Irish dance, ballet, hip hop, musical theatre and more. For the past two years, I have been training in aerial dance and have been offered a place in Aircraft Circus School, London, to further my training in this area. I am a huge advocate for mental health.

Dubai
I was born and raised in Saval, a small and close knit community in the heart of County Down, close to the beautiful Mourne Mountains. I am the oldest of four children and have two brothers and one sister. I grew up on the farm but swapped my wellies for Irish dancing shoes at a young age to win two All-Ireland Gold medals for Irish team dancing. I have just completed a five year degree in Medicine at Queens University Belfast and look forward to graduating as a doctor and starting work in July 2017.
Táim tharr a bheith bródúil a bheith páirteach i Féile Rós Thrá Lí i mbliana ar son muintir na hÉireann i Dubai. Forever seeking a new challenge, I embarked on my adventure to Dubai on New Year’s Eve 2015 where I became a Marketing Officer for Polarcus, a company that specializes in seismic acquisition and geophysical interpretation. The city became my second home the following September, when I joined the Dubai Celts GAA Club. Even though both of my parents are from Mayo, I never picked up a football until I was twenty-three and living in a desert, 8,000km away from home!
Dublin
Fermanagh
I am a fully-qualified primary school teacher in St. Vincent de Paul Infant School, Griffith Avenue. My main hobby since age five has been Irish dancing and I was delighted to retire last summer at age 24 as two-times World Champion, five-times All-Ireland Champion and three-times Dublin Regional Champion. Since retiring I’ve created my own Irish dancing blog called ‘Twinkle Toes’. It’s always been a dream of mine to set up a dance school and so this year the Coughlan School of Irish Dancing opened its doors in Glasnevin.
I am a doctor of philosophy student at Queen’s University Belfast with a Masters in Inclusion and Special Needs Education. I currently teach Physical Education at Saint Mary’s High School Brollagh, Belleek in Fermanagh. I enjoy farming, sport and in recent years, I have developed an interest in travelling. Last August I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship as an Irish delegate to participate in the annual Association of Commonwealth Summer School in Africa to discuss multidisciplinary issues of global importance. I love going to country music festivals, concerts and dances across Ireland.

Galway
I am thrilled to be traveling to Ireland to participate in an event representative of my Irish heritage of which I am immensely proud. My grandfather, Tom O’Donoghue, grew up in Listowel and my great grandparents hailed from Mayo and Cork. Performing with the Irish Echoes in Orlando, working at Walt Disney World in the entertainment department, and acting as the Production Director of the children’s ministry at my church, keep my days busy and my heart fulfilled. I volunteer my time to the Special Olympics because of my brother, Michael, who is severely mentally and physically disabled.
I’m from Castlegar in the heart of Galway city. I spent four years studying in GMIT Mayo and have been working as a staff nurse in the Acute Medical Unit, University Hospital Galway since December 2015. I aspire to continue my studies in the near future to specialise as a neonatal nurse. In 2005, my mother was part of a small committee who set up the Liam Mellows Camogie club for me and my sister to be able to play with our own club. I am proud to say I have travelled to seven different countries in the last year.

Hong Kong
After spending my childhood in Germany and my teenage years in Ireland, where I acquired my Leaving Cert, I felt a strong pull back to Germany. My mum is still living in Ireland and is happy out with her farm in Bantry, Co. Cork. However my dad, just like my two younger sisters and I, lives in Düsseldorf where he runs a good old-fashioned Irish pub. Besides working in a clothing store to pay for my tuition, I like to draw portraits of humans and dogs. I am attending a private music school in order to become a singer and teacher.
Hi everyone! 你 好!I was born in Hong Kong but I often say my mother tongue is confused, as I was raised speaking Cantonese and Mandarin in class, and English at home. At the age of 10, I moved to Boulder, Colorado. For Junior year I enjoyed a semester abroad in Tokyo at the local Japanese school of Sacred Heart. There I became fluent in Japanese and earned enough credits to graduate school one year early. After graduation I returned to Hong Kong, where I cofounded Bao Bao Films and ChinaWest Films. My grandmother is from County Mayo.

Kerry
I am a 19-year-old Cork-native and a second year Biochemistry pre-Medical student minoring in Mathematics at the University of Kentucky. I am the Vice President of Math Club and the Vice President of Philanthropy for my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. I am very honored to be a part of the Rose of Tralee. My first cousin once removed, Fiona White, was the Cork Rose in 1993 and my grandfather, Michael O’Brien, was the clarinet player with the Cork City Jazz Band which played at the festival for years.
I hail from Rathmore which is on the “right” side of the Cork/Kerry border, in the heart of Sliabh Luachra and immersed in tradition, sport, music and culture. My career path led me to St. Angela’s College in Sligo where I was awarded an undergraduate degree in Home Economics and Religious Education. Teaching opportunities brought me to Dublin. While working there I undertook a part-time MSc in Food, Health and Nutrition through University College Dublin. I’m back to St. Angela’s in Sligo since 2015, not as the eternal student but as a lecturer.
Kildare
Kilkenny
I was born in London 23 years ago and moved to the beautiful Lilywhite county with my younger brother and parents when I was three. My parents, Niall and Berna, are both from Athlone. I grew up in in a small village called Kilcock and am delighted to say Kildare is the host county for this year’s Rose of Tralee Tour. I have just completed my Professional Masters in Education from Maynooth University to become a Secondary School teacher and am carrying out my teaching placement in Clongowes Wood College. This summer I will also be volunteering at the Michaela Harte Foundation Camp for young girls encompassing fun, wellbeing and faith.
I attended school in my home town of Callan and after completing my studies in Veterinary Nursing I moved back to Kilkenny and worked in Archersfield Veterinary Clinic where I spent most of my week wearing wellies and overalls in the company of the “famous friesians” of the south east. After a year and a half of wearing muck for makeup, I decided to trade in the hooves for paws and complete my honours degree in Veterinary Nursing where I achieved the highest grades in my graduating class. I hold a strong passion for human and animal welfare, with mental health and animal cruelty holding a place close to my heart.

Leitrim
Growing up in Mountmellick our home was attached to the family business which is a local grocery shop. Lent as you could imagine was always difficult as a child, but I loved growing up with the buzz of the shop and the customers around me. I studied Psychology and Geography in NUI Galway, followed by a Masters in Management at Smurfit Business School. I am currently working as an Event Manager with Accenture in Dublin which I love as it enables me to engage with a variety of different personalities from around the world.
I am from the ‘friendly town’ in Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim. I was born in Sydney, Australia to Irish parents, Eugene & Bernadette. We moved to Ireland when I was two and half and have lived here since. I studied a Bachelor of Education in St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra. I am now a primary school teacher in Co. Kildare. I love my job. I know I am biased, but I believe Ireland is the most beautiful country in the world. I love to meet new people and experience new cultures, but it is fantastic to return home to Ireland.
Limerick
London
I am 24 and come from a small parish in County Limerick called Kilcornan. I am the youngest in my family, with two older brothers. I have just finished a Masters of Education, which means I am now a qualified Secondary School English teacher. Horses have been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I am constantly encouraging people to get involved with the sport and anyone who has, has become addicted, just like me! I have summated many mountains throughout Ireland and Mt. Sinai in Egypt. I also climbed the highest climbing wall in Vietnam in 2016, standing at thirty meters high.
I am a 24 year old Donegal born and Kerry raised girl. I studied Law for one year in the University of Limerick before I followed my heart to London six years ago to study Physiotherapy. I am now a Specialised Physiotherapist at St. George’s Hospital and Wimbledon Rugby Club. Travel is one of my great passions. I love all forms of music and dance, and have been a member of a traditional Irish cabaret group from a young age. The brush dance has become one of my party pieces and I have great fun teaching it to anyone willing to risk it - including some dubious rugby players!

I am currently going into my final year studying for a BA in Psychology in Dublin Business School. In 2012, I was lucky enough to become a member of a singing girl group ‘Celtic Chique’. We have been performing mainly at charity events all around Ireland. I plan to undertake studies in positive psychology, and I envision myself working to help people realise their potential and be happier as a result. I love fashion and style as I believe that how you dress can change how you feel, and impact your life in a small but important way.
I’m a 27 year old PR Executive and Communications in Creative Media graduate from Dundalk. I started a blog, AoifeJane, in April 2016 as a way to discuss my struggles with hair loss as a woman and the mental health effects that go along with it. I want to create awareness for this common problem and use the blog as an environment that hair loss sufferers can come to for information and support. It’s hard to put into words what it took for me to fill out the application to be the Louth Rose 2017. I have regained much needed confidence, through my blog.

I am a primary school teacher from Ballaghaderreen, and also have a focus on my dance career at the moment. In 2016, I set up my own dance school called ‘Jiving Juniors’. The school has had 600 pupils to date and children and teens learn how to jive, waltz and line dance in a country music environment. I travel around the country each week visiting schools, teaching classes and working in Autistic Units and special need settings, and also teach Social Dancing for adults. I also have a huge grá for the Irish language, traditional music and dance.
I live in a small area called Hortland which sits on the border between Meath and Kildare. Currently, I work full time in Callagys Pharmacy, Kilcock, as part of the dispensary team. I have been given the opportunity to further my studies to achieve my pharmacy technician qualification. Alongside my studies, I have had a passion for performance from a young age. Not only am I fulfilling my own personal dream of becoming a Rose, I am also fulfilling my Nana Molly’s vision of me representing Meath in this year’s Festival.
Melbourne
Monaghan
I am a 26 year old Dublin native living in the wonderful Melbourne. My fiancé Charles and I made the leap a little over 18 months ago. My sister and brother in law live in Melbourne too, which dampens any homesickness I have. Over this time I have learned why it is so often voted the most liveable city in the world and most weekends I can be found out bush walking or hiking. I am a Speech Pathologist and have great passion for my work. I work with young children with Autism and Developmental Language Disorder.
Waiting for my Leaving Certificate results, I am an 18 year old who attended St. Louis Secondary School Carrickmacross. I am the second eldest of four and my older brother Mikey plays county football for Monaghan. Because of my interest in the community I got involved with the Pope John Paul Awards. By achieving my 20 parish hours and 20 social hours I received my Gold Award. I really enjoy jiving and listening to country music. My goal is that after school I would love to become a General Nurse. I always wanted to be a nurse.
New York
New Zealand
I was born and raised in Walden, a small town about 90 miles (145km) north of New York City. My mother is from Naas, Co. Kildare and my father is originally from Brooklyn with our family traced back to Cavan and Sligo. I was lucky enough to spend my summers growing up in Naas, where I fell in love with the Irish culture and learned the importance of a strong family bond. But my true passion (f)lies within aviation. I am currently serving in the New York Air National Guard as a Loadmaster on the C-17 Globemaster cargo jet.
Kia Ora! Although living half-way across the world now in the picturesque Taranaki region, I am proud to be a Cork girl from the town of Clonakilty where I was brought up by my tirelessly supportive parents Aidan & Noreen. The Rose of Tralee journey thus far has been a soul-searching mission – a way for me to understand who I am as an Irish woman living in New Zealand, my future. I have many passions and ambitions but none so strong as my desire to use this amazing platform to advocate for young women living around the world with Type 1 Diabetes.

I am 21 years old and currently living in Sunderland, England. I grew up in a little village called Ballintubber in County Roscommon. I broke my parents’ hearts and moved across the pond to sunny Sunderland in September 2014 to follow my heart and study Pharmacy in the University of Sunderland. I’m currently going into my final year in September with the hope of qualifying with my Masters in Pharmacy next summer. It has grown to be a love of mine and I have passion for helping and caring for people. I’m a proud member of the Irish Society in the University and always looking for new recruits.
I’m 19 and live in Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. I am currently completing my Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). I decided to pursue Engineering after participating in the 2014 Women in Science and Engineering Newfoundland and Labrador Student Summer Employment Program. My Irish Heritage originates from my father’s side of the family. My three times great grandfather Timothy O’Connor was born in Kilkenny. My great grandmother Ellen Connors (Henry) was born and raised in Belfast and came to Newfoundland in 1944.

North Carolina
Offaly
At 21, I am a current graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, with a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. I moved to Wilmington, North Carolina for school in 2013, but I was born in the state of New Jersey. My great-great-great grandfather came over from Ireland in 1867, and I am hoping to make him proud as the first Rose in our family! When I am not working, you can usually find me sleeping or at the beach, or sleeping at the beach; my biggest dream is owning a little house along the shore so I never have to leave my little happy place.
I’m from a small rural area in Offaly called Clonaderig. I went to primary school in my local village, Ballinahown, and then went to secondary school in Our Lady’s Bower in Athlone. I studied Medicine at NUI Galway. I am currently working as a junior doctor in the Accident and Emergency department of University College Hospital Galway. Sport has always been an enjoyable part of my life. I’ve played soccer and Gaelic football from a very early age, and have been fortunate enough to represent Ireland in soccer at U17 and U19 level and in the World University Games.
Ohio
Ottawa
I was born in Bethesda, Maryland, but I grew up and went to school in Cleveland, Ohio. My grandmother and grandfather were from Ballintubber and Roscommon, respectively, and immigrated to America when they were young adults. Ever since I can remember, my Irish heritage has been a prominent part of my life. From Irish dancing since age four to marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cleveland, I have been able to experience the Irish traditions my grandparents aimed to keep at the core of our family. I recently graduated from Loyola University Chicago where I studied Statistics, Marketing, and Information Systems.
I am a 22-year-old student completing my Bachelor of Social Sciences degree at the University of Ottawa with a specialization in International Development and Globalization and minor in Business Administration. I grew up in Whitby, Ontario and moved to Ottawa to study in French Immersion and be in a bilingual environment. My Irish roots are on my father’s side of the family as my great-great-grandfather, John Foran Jr. immigrated from Castlegregory Co. Kerry to Canada as a baby in 1840 to Huron County, Ontario. In my free time, I enjoy reading, playing guitar and exploring Ottawa by bike.
Perth
Philadelphia
I was born in East London, and my Irish heritage comes from Mountmellick, Co Laois where my mother and grandmother’s family is from, and Portarlington, Co Offaly where my grandad’s family are from. In 2005, my family decided to emigrate to Australia. We have been in Perth ever since. I currently work as a cosmetician, and as a bartender. I am also studying a Certificate III in Education Support. Throughout my schooling years I have been a part of various productions and performances, and even playing lead roles, including Sadako in A Thousand Cranes – for which I had to make hundreds of origami cranes.
I currently live in Drexel Hill, PA, about 15 minutes from the city center. My beautiful mother Mary, was born in Kilcormac, Offaly and is one of 10 from a farming background. My mother came to America in the late 1970s where she met my Italian father Peter, in the Bronx. I currently work in Portfolio Management for De Lage Landen, a global vendor finance company. I would like to dedicate this journey in memory of my Granny, Rose. Every year in August, I would watch the Rose of Tralee with my Granny. I would tell her that I will be up there one day waving to her, I hope to make her proud.
Queensland
Roscommon
I have lived in Queensland for all of my 27 years and I’m a first-generation Aussie with my parents emigrating from Ireland in the late 80s. Mum and Dad were both born and raised in Dublin. We have had the privilege of travelling back to Ireland several times and some of my fondest memories include drinking tea, eating chocolate and playing cards with my great aunts and many cousins during my first Irish (COLD) Christmas. I work as an Event Planning Manager at the highly acclaimed Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
I grew up in the small village of Castleplunkett in Roscommon, where I still live and work today. I am 27 years old and I am a Primary School Teacher. I have always wanted to work with children. I have a huge love and respect for Gaeilge, which initially came from the many summers I spent as a student and as a Cúntóir in Coláiste Lurgan in Connemara. I currently facilitate a weekly Irish club for children – a place they can come to take part in art, drama, games and many other fun activities through Gaeilge.
San Francisco
Sligo
I was born and raised in the beautiful wine country region, just north of San Francisco. I am currently a student at the University of Nevada, working towards my bachelor of science in physics, with a minor in math. I currently serve as the Director of Cultural Interests for Delta Gamma, Eta Iota Chapter, which allows me to host presentations to over 200 women, regarding respect and understanding of cultures around the world. I have volunteered in many different areas, such as teaching special needs kids to ride bicycles, working with veterans and volunteering at a senior care facility. My parents are from Dublin, and I have a strong sense of Irish tradition and heritage in my heart.
I am a 25 year old secondary school teacher and I live in a small rural village called Cloonacool at the foot of the Ox Mountains. I spent four wonderful years in the University of Limerick studying a Bachelor of Education with Modern Languages. I am currently teaching French in Grange Post Primary School in County Sligo. Throughout my studies, I have had several opportunities to travel. In my free time, I enjoy travelling and meeting new people. I also have a passion for social dancing; mainly jiving and country music. I also enjoy reading in my three languages, Gaelic football, and music.

South Australia
South Carolina
My Irish heritage comes predominantly from my mother, who is originally from Bundoran, Co. Donegal. I do, however, have Irish ties on my father’s side too, dating back to my great grandparents who hail from Clare. I am currently undertaking an Honours Degree at the University of South Australia, specialising in interior architecture and educational buildings. Preceding this, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Studies, also at the University of South Australia. I would really love to bring a greater awareness for the Rose of Tralee quest here in Australia and expose as many people as possible to this fabulous experience.
I was born and raised in the beautiful state of South Carolina, which has some of the most incredible coastlines, lakes, rivers, mountains, and farmland in the country. I’m 19 and can trace my Irish heritage on both sides of my family to Co Cavan on my dad’s, and Co Antrim on my mom’s. I attend Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, where I study Agribusiness in hopes of pursuing a career in either agriculture sales or policy with a focus on sustainability. I am an active member in Clemson’s Agribusiness Club and successfully implemented a record breaking fundraiser this year.
Southern California
Sydney
I am 24 years old, the youngest in a family of five raised in the West of Ireland in the beautiful town of Newport, Co Mayo. I moved to the States two years ago to further my career as an accountant as part of the Glanbia Pure Ambition Graduate Program. I settled into the way of life in Southern California enjoying the constant sunshine, beautiful long beaches and endless hiking trials around the hills of Los Angeles. Alongside new experiences, celebrating my Irishness is very important to me. I have met so many Irish and Irish descendants here, which really illustrates how evolved our small nation is around the world.
I’m from Ballylongford in North Kerry where I grew up with my parents, brother & sister. I broke my parents’ hearts and moved to Sydney four years ago with my boyfriend on a one way flight seeking a new adventure, opportunities and live the dream of travelling around the world. First stop…Sydney and we never left! I fell in love with this beautiful, vibrant & hectic city which has now become my second home. I hope to become a permanent resident by the end of 2017. Although nursing is both a physical & emotionally challenging vocation I couldn’t and wouldn’t do anything else!
Texas
Tipperary
I live and work in Houston, Texas, which is the fourth largest city in the United States. I currently work in the Texas Medical Center as an Administrative Coordinator and plan to attend law school in the near future with an emphasis in Immigration Law. My Irish roots come from my mother’s side of the family, the Lawler’s, who are from Abbeyleix, County Laois. My father’s side of the family is from Mexico City. Being from a multicultural background has allowed me to connect with diverse communities in the city of Houston as well as the many countries I have visited around the world.
I hail from a small parish called Toomevara. I am a proud farmer’s daughter and the youngest of four siblings. Like most Tipperary people, I am very passionate about GAA, in particular camogie. I have played camogie with my club Toomevara since the age of five. I had the privilege of playing on the Tipperary Senior Camogie for five years. I am currently working as a full time nurse within the South Tipperary Mental Health Services. In 2018, I hope to complete a post graduate degree and work in child and adolescence mental health services.
Toronto
Tyrone
I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Toronto. I am half French Canadian and half Irish. My grandparents, aunt and uncle hail from Dublin. They came over in 1954, and once settled here had a family. I went to an arts high school to follow my passion for visual arts (I’ve been painting since I was seven, had a solo show at 12, and had pieces hanging in the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto for eight years). I ended up majoring in photography and dance! I also grew up playing the piano (brought to Toronto from Dublin!), and figure skating.
I’m a third year student teacher at St. Mary’s University College in Belfast, studying Primary education with Irish. I hail from a townland called “Termon” or “An Tearmainn”, meaning a safe place or a sanctuary in Irish, in Carrickmore, County Tyrone. Carrickmore is a very close-knit community with the GAA at its core. I’ve played for both my club Carrickmore and at County level for Tyrone. A student at St. Mary’s, I live in Belfast during the week and I love nothing more than to come home on a Thursday or Friday night and drink a cup of tea in Carrickmore.
Washington D.C.
Waterford
I currently live in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, and am going into my fourth year at Christopher Newport University, where I study French and Communication Studies, and minor in Middle East and North Africa, and Arabic. My family’s ancestry is from Armagh, Monaghan, and Kerry! I am a competitive Irish dancer, and my love of dance has inspired my parents to dance as well. Growing up, my father was in the military so I had the opportunity to live all over the world, which included learning Flemish at the same time as I learned English!
I am a 23 year old Resource Teacher, supporting children with special needs, in Waterford Educate Together National School. I graduated from Mary Immaculate College in 2016 with a Bachelor of Education degree and Music Education Specialism. Growing up I had two passions, music and scouting. Having started in the Ferrybank Scout Group at the age of nine, it quickly became a major part of my life. My flare for music began at a young age. I have also played lead roles in various musicals both locally and nationally such as Annie in ‘Annie’, Grizabella in ‘Cats’ and Cinderella in ‘Cinderella’.

Western Canada
Westmeath
I live in Calgary, Alberta and was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where my parents, Patrick and Kama decided to settle down. My father, Patrick, is from Co. Cavan and immigrated to Canada in 1976. My mother, Kama, is from Lynn Lake, a small mining town in Northern Manitoba. I have been working at a small environmental consulting firm for the past three years. My passion is dance; I attend Irish dance training twice a week, and I volunteer my time, teaching at my Irish dance Academy once per week.
I am 23 years old and from Glasson, the ‘Village of the Roses’, County Westmeath. Hockey provided an escape from academia, I played, coached and captained at school and club level. Having an interest in people, psychology was an obvious academic choice for me. I’ve just finished with a first class honours degree from Trinity College Dublin. I enjoyed my time there and sharing the campus with tourists nurtured my appreciation of this little country that we’re lucky to call home. Now at a junction in my career path, I plan to take a year out and consider my options.
Wexford
Wicklow
I live at the foothills of Mt. Leinster in the picturesque village of Ballindaggin, County Wexford. I work as a primary school teacher at Boolavogue National School where I teach a group of 30 incredible first and second class students. I have recently completed a master’s programme in Waterford Institute of Technology in the area of Leadership and Management in Education. I also work as an educational tutor with the Dyslexic Association of Ireland. I am passionate about music and Irish dance and have performed at the National Concert Hall, Dublin and the National Opera House in Wexford.
I have lived in Redcross, a small yet beautiful village close to the seaside, most of my life, having moved down from the busy life of Dublin. I currently work full time in the Wickow Brewery in Redcross village. I am a fully qualified ITEC and CIBTAC Beauty Therapist having attended Glenart College in Arklow, Co. Wicklow. I’ve always had a big interest in makeup and fashion and love experimenting and taking risks with them. I am very family focused and always ensure to make time to spend with them.

I grew up in a little town called Kingscourt in County Cavan. I had always wanted to become a Pharmacist but was unfortunate not to achieve the points required. After much encouragement from my mother, and some self-belief, I sat myself down and filled in the UCAS form to study Pharmacy in the UK. The rest is history! I’ve lived in Liverpool now for just under seven years and I love it. The people here, and in Yorkshire, are some of the nicest you could ever wish to come across and they know how to make you feel right at home.

OfficiaL PROGRAMME 2017
That made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee.
The woman’s Academy and Mentorship Walk Monday 21st August, Siamsa Tíre Theatre
The Rose of Tralee International Festival not only connects the global Irish community, it celebrates the achievements of Irish women throughout the world. Renowned Irish broadcaster, publisher and business woman, Norah Casey will delve into the minds of a brilliant line-up of women to uncover what really sets them apart and how they achieved success at The Rose Woman’s Academy from 10am on Monday 21st August at Siamsa Tíre Theatre. Throughout the day over 10 brilliant and successful women will join Norah on stage for the power-packed morning session followed by the Rose Mentorship Walk featuring some of this year’s Roses, Roses of Tralee, local business leaders and celebrities. Norah Casey pioneered a new approach to learning through her learning and development platform Planet Woman and has designed The Rose Women’s Academy programme exclusively for women. Over 2000 women
She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer...

have been through her Academy events since it began five years ago. This is a day of high energy and powerful nuggets. And for those who come along wanting to change the course of their career or life-plan this event is transformative. The Academy is a safe space where the real secrets to achieving success are unearthed and analysed. All are welcome to join in the Rose Mentorship Walk. Young women and girls from aged 12 upwards are particularly welcome. We are reaching out to all local business and community leaders, both women and men, to join the Roses in passing it on for this innovative initiative. Donating just 30 minutes of your time could help change the course of a young woman’s life.

Yet ‘twas not her beauty alone that won me.
It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it and once again, 64 young gentleman have stepped up to the plate to accompany our Roses to a host of events during this year’s Festival. The 2016 Rose Escort of the Year, John Slowey, who will return to Tralee again this year, said: “I can guarantee that all of the Rose Escorts will have the time of their lives at this year’s Festival. While there are responsibilities that come with the role, they will all manage to have a great time in Tralee! Becoming a Rose Escort in 2016 has proven to be one of the best decisions of my life. Words cannot describe the amount of fun, laughter and once-in- a-lifetime experiences I have gone through. It has given me the opportunity to meet so many new and interesting people from all over the world and it is something for which I will always be grateful.”

A former Mayor of Kilkenny, two doctors, two gardaí, and seven teachers have made the cut to be among the 64 Rose Escorts at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival. The lads, who already came through an interview process at the Glen Royal Hotel in Maynooth in April, were put through their paces over the June Bank Holiday Weekend at the annual Boot Camp along the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry. They had to pass a number of endurance tests and teambuilding exercises before they could graduate as fullyfledged Rose Escorts. From morning to night, the men were tasked with carrying out a range activities including a hike over Mount Brandon - Ireland’s second highest mountain - cliff diving, waterskiing, cycling, turf-footing, abseiling, kayaking, surfing,

ironing and sewing in order to prove they will have the stamina to be a Rose Escort. This year’s Rose Escort Boot Camp activities were supported by Kerry County Council and Kerry Civil Defence, under Civil Defence Officer Tom Brosnan, who played a major role in the transport and logistics of the event. Around 200 men aged between 21 and 30 applied to become Rose Escorts at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival and following a detailed interview process, the final 64, the most ever, were selected to take part in a Boot Camp weekend in the Kingdom to help them cope with the demands of a busy week in Tralee.
The Boot Camp was organised in partnership with the Tourism Department and Operations Division of Kerry County Council and it could not have taken place without the support of the following: Derrynane Seasports, Charlie Chaplin Festival Waterville, Casey Bike Hire Cahersiveen, Royal Hotel Valentia, Maria O’Connell and Miriam Lyne in Valentia, Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, Aqua Dome Tralee, Jamie Knox Watersports, Dingle Ocean World, Dingle Gin, The Blasket Bar and Nightclub, Tralee, Castlegregory Community Council, Castlegregory GAA Club, The Rose Hotel, Kerry County Fire Service, Laois Civil Defence, Wild Water Adventures, and the Hussey, Goodwin and O’Connor Families.
Join the Rose Escorts in the Festival Dome on Monday 21st August when one of them will be announced as the Rose Escort of the Year for 2017.

She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer...
ary O’Connor lived in the middle of Tralee town, in Brogue Lane, which took its name from the broguemakers (or shoemakers) who lived and worked there. Mary lived in a thatched cabin with her parents, sisters Brigid and Ellen and younger brother Willie. Her father was a broguemaker, and her mother worked as a dairymaid. Mary was very beautiful; she had long dark hair and soft, shining eyes. Her status as the daughter of a broguemaker and dairymaid meant Mary was destined for work as a maid or house-help. When she was 17 she secured employment as a kitchen maid for the Mulchinock household in Tralee. The Mulchinocks were a wealthy family of merchants who owned a wool and linen draper’s shop on the site of what is now Heaton’s department store in Tralee.
William had been held responsible. William’s friend informed him there was a warrant out for his arrest and a reward of 100 gold sovereigns for finding him. He was told to make for Barrow Harbour and get It wasn’t long before William met his sister’s on a wine ship that was leaving that night. William new nursemaid. As soon as he saw Mary he was kissed Mary goodbye and told her he would return transfixed by her eyes, her grace, her long dark hair soon. William made his way to India where he worked as and delicate skin. Mary and William began to meet each other every a war correspondent. For him of the fair young brow I weep, Who takes in the churchyard now his sleep; For he was the star above sun-bright, That tinged with the light of love my night.
One night beneath the pale, silvery moon William asked Mary to marry him. However,William’s family disapproved of him seeing Mary, the broguemaker’s daughter who lived in a small peasant house in the middle of town. Whilst Mary loved William, she knew that their union could never be, as it would force him to turn his back on his family and he would begin to regret the day he’d ever met her. She declined his offer of marriage.
Michael Mulchinock had married Margaret McCann and they lived in the grand Mulchinock house, West Villa. The family owned a considerable amount of land around the house and the neighbourhood, as well as property in town. They had servants, William refused to give up. He wrote a song for coachmen, gardeners and farmhands. Mary to try and convince her otherwise. Michael died of a fever in 1828, so Margaret The pale moon was rising above the green mountains, Mulchinock was head of the household when Mary The sun was declining beneath the blue sea, O’Connor started working in the kitchens of West When I strayed with my love Villa. But Mary still refused to marry him. Margaret Mulchinock’s sons had grown to be young men and William was becoming a dreamer. In the eyes of his family he was good-for-nothing, and even worse: a poet. In November 1840 Henry, William’s younger brother, died. William was inconsolable as he was closer to William than his more practical brother Edward. He wrote a poem about his feelings:
So in 1849, some six years after leaving Tralee, William returned. He stopped off at The Kings Arms in Rock Street for a drink before planning to visit Mary in nearby Brogue Lane. The landlord began to draw the curtains to mark the passing of a funeral coming down the street. On enquiring who the funeral was for, William was told it was for a local girl from Brogue Lane, a lovely and fair young woman named Mary O’Connor - the Rose of Tralee. William was devastated and his heart broken. There was nothing left for him but to visit Mary’s grave on the outskirts of town. The famine was at its height in Ireland at this time and most of the country’s eight million inhabitants were trying to survive on a diet of potatoes alone. William never got over Mary’s death, and despite marrying and having children with an old flame he refused to forget her.
William moved with his family to New York in 1849 but returned alone six years later to Tralee and lived the rest of his life in Ashe Street. In the far fields of India ‘mid war’s dreadful thunders, Her voice was solace and comfort to me. But the chill hand of death has now rent us asunder, I’m lonely tonight for the Rose of Tralee.
The cool shades of evening their mantle were spreading, And Mary all smiling was listening to me. The moon through the valley her pale rays was shedding, When I won the heart of the Rose of Tralee.
She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer, Yet ‘twas not her beauty alone that won me. Oh no, ‘twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning That made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee.
