OUR CITY. OUR STAGE. Dear Friend, It is with great pleasure that I share The Rose’s 2018 – 2019 season. In these pages, you will find over 100 different performances that reflect the dynamism and vibrancy of our great city. The 2018 – 2019 season is richly diverse and full of great talent. We are thrilled to welcome international stars to Brampton, such as the iconic Don MacLean, comedy great Kevin Nealon, sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, and reggae legend Marcia Griffiths. Some of the country’s most celebrated musicians are coming to The Rose, including Jim Cuddy, Matthew Good, Kardinal Offishall, and Holly Cole. Dance lovers will be captivated by Traces, presented by Indigenous dance company Red Sky Performance. Our theatre offerings present a range of uniquely Canadian perspectives and experiences, including Why Not Theatre’s A Brimful of Asha. We are pleased to present family favourites, like Dueling Magicians, Mini-Pop Kids, and Potted Potter.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR BRENDAN HEALY

Brampton’s cultural significance on the national and international scene is skyrocketing and, with extraordinary local talent on our stage this year, it is no wonder why. The beloved Rose Orchestra and Brampton Concert Band are returning for another season of symphonic magic. Reggae legends Exco Levi and Nana McLean are releasing their next studio albums in Studio Two. For the first time, Brampton Arts Walk of Fame recipient Trey Anthony will be on our stage with her powerful play How Black Mothers Say I Love You. And, we are launching a new year-long series entitled THIS IS BRAMPTON which will provide an opportunity to discover authentic Brampton hip-hop, RnB, pop, rock, and other musical genres. Also new this year is our Membership program which is available to those purchasing tickets to multiple shows this season. As a member, you will be able to enjoy fantastic benefits inside and outside our building as well as access to exclusive members-only events. The Rose is truly one of Canada’s most extraordinary venues. There are few other places where you can experience such big talent on an intimate stage. The Rose Orchestra is joined once again by the amazing St. Roch Chamber Choir and Brampton Children’s Chorus to celebrate the Christmas season. It will be a joyous evening of highlights from Handel’s beloved Messiah to traditional carols and festive music from past and present.

There is a little Bohemian in all of us. The Rose Orchestra welcomes Canadian violinist Royce Rich to the stage, to create a sound experience of artists, musicians, and free-spirited gypsies. Come Join the orchestra and be inspired!

Spring is in the air, everything feels new again. The Rose Orchestra wraps up another compelling season with Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”. The Rosebud Orchestra will also delight you with memorable spring melodies as they feature a special young soloist on the violin.

Wrong For Each Other takes us on an emotional ride that examines the evolution of a marriage with humour and heart and vulnerability.

Canadian jazz artist Michael Keashammer kicks off Brampton’s 2nd Annual World of Jazz Festival, presented by B-Jazzed. Keashammer and his band delight with their richly melodic interpretation of original songs, rooted in the tradition of New Orleans piano. 7-time JUNO nominee and winner of the 2017 West Coast Music Award for Best Jazz Artist, Kaeshammer joins a diverse group of musicians at this year’s festival to demonstrate how the word “jazz” is interpreted worldwide.

Get up close with Exco Levi as he drops his third studio album at The Rose. Born in Manchester, and raised in Jamaica, Levi quickly took hold of the Canadian reggae scene after emigrating in 2005. OCTOBER 5, 2018 - 8:00 PM Born and raised in Toronto, 4-time JUNO Award winner Kardinal Offishall is one of the city’s most praised artists. From his start in Toronto’s underground hip-hop scene in the 1990s, Offishall garnered success through his tongue-in-cheek lyrics, integration of Patois and dancehall, and spirited stage presence. Toronto artist Alx Valiz, famous for electrifying, snyth-driven Latinrhythm pop, shares the stage in this high-energy performance.

ANANDI BHATTACHARYA QUARTET NOVEMBER 1, 2018 - 8:00 PM

Called “the voice of modern India”, Anandi Bhattacharya’s singing style is a mix of Agra, Patiala, and Maihar schooling. Anandi is joined by Spanish vocalist, clarinetist and composer Carola Ortiz; her father, accomplished slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya; and uncle, tabla master Subhasis Bhattacharya. The quartet blends contemporary sounds with traditional instruments to create a singular musical experience.

SOLDIERS OF SONG NOVEMBER 2, 2018 - 8:00 PM

Soldiers of Song combines theatre and music based on the original works of the Dumbells, a Canadian concert party that entertained the troops on the front line in World War I. Old comedy sketches and humorous war songs are brought to life, as storyteller Lorne Brown shares stories about his personal connection to the Dumbells. Inspired by Anishinaabe cosmology, our star and sky stories, Trace maps our origin and evolution. JUNO-nominated artist Royal Wood performs songs from his deeply personal eighth studio album Ever After the Farewell, released in 2018. To capture the rawest possible sound, most of the songs on the album were recorded the day they were written, with Royal playing the majority of the instruments.

NOVEMBER 28, 2018 - 7:00 PM Brighten your holidays with Lightwire Theatre’s A Very Electric Christmas. Audiences of all ages will treasure this magical and captivating tale of family, friendship, and hope set to timeless holiday hits. While heading south for winter, a young bird named Max gets blown off course during a snowstorm, and ends up alone and lost at the North Pole. As he tries to make his way home, his adventure begins when he encounters a host of interesting characters.

NOVEMBER 30, 2018 - 8:00 PM For over 35 years, Jim Cuddy has written songs that have become indelible in the soundtrack of Canadian lives. With the release of his fourth solo album, Constellation, he adds ten more to that extraordinary songbook. One of the founding members and creative forces behind Blue Rodeo, Cuddy has received countless accolades, from the Order of Canada and induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Only in Brampton, Jim Cuddy is joined for a special performance by his sons, Devin and Sam.

The charismatic, globe-trotting trio are the most successful classical crossover act to emerge from Ireland, with over a million CDs sold worldwide. The Celtic Tenors will perform songs such as Danny Boy, You Raise Me Up, Nessun Dorma, and other such favourites.
