Africville Stories is Order of Canada recipient Joe Sealy’s new presentation that expands his 1997 JUNO Award-winning recording Africville Suite. Established in 1847, “Africville” was nestled on the shores of the Bedford Basin at the north end of Halifax and was Canada’s oldest Black community, until it was razed in the late 1960s as an “urban improvement” measure. “Africville” overcame a multitude of challenges by pulling from the hearts and souls of its residents in order to survive for more than a century, until the final building was demolished in 1970. The stories surrounding George Dixon, Joe Louis, Portia White and Duke Ellington combine to create the legacy of this unique Canadian community. Africville Stories tells of this legacy in a narrative and musical journey, with guest artists Jackie Richardson and Paul Novotny.

“We’ll push the envelope, then reel it back in, then push it again.” – Patrick Murphy, Gaelic Storm After nearly two decades, chart-topping Celtic band Gaelic Storm is looking sharper than ever with their latest release, Matching Sweaters. Rooted in the songwriting of founders Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, the album moves from drinking songs to sea shanties to energetic instrumentals, to rootsy pop-rockers, gluing everything together with their signature spark and spirit. Back in the mid1990s, Gaelic Storm kicked off their career at a pub in Santa Monica, California; discovered there, they appeared in the blockbuster film Titanic (performing in the “Irish Party in Third Class” scene). This laid the groundwork for a career that would eventually find them topping the Billboard World Chart six times, while gaining a reputation as a genre-bending Irish rock band, whose songs mix Celtic traditions with something uniquely creative.

LASSIC ALBUMS LIVE CL IC ALBUMS LIVE CLASSIC BUM LIVE CLASSIC ALBU CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE

THE BEATLES, ABBEY ROAD NOVEMBER 21, 2019 – 8 PM

“We’ve all read so much into the way The Beatles ended, but this album is the testament. It shows how giving and caring they were with each other, the four of them deeply involved with each others songs. That’s beautiful, that’s the power of music. Abbey Road was released in October 1969 as a generation said goodbye to 10 years of heavy change; this album led us all across a new road and into another decade. And wasn’t that just like The Beatles? To conclude with messages of love and sunshine. We know how to play this album. We care about this album.” – Craig Martin, Founder of Classic Albums Live

PINK FLOYD, THE WALL FEBRUARY 7, 2020 – 8 PM

“40 years after its release, The Wall has taken on new meaning – it seems now there are more walls than bridges. But music builds bridges, and The Wall, released in December 1979, is actually a bridge. It became the number one selling album of the 70s, even though it was an 80s album … change was in the air, and it took this album’s reflection to enact it. All the sounds and voices, all the sonic luxury, it all comes alive on our stage. The musicians all realize how important this album is – we all do. It’s a monumental work of art – to me, The Wall is more important than anything you’ll find in a museum.” – Craig Martin, Founder of Classic Albums Live

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS, DAMN THE TORPEDOES APRIL 24, 2020 – 8 PM

“It’s been 40 years since Damn the Torpedoes was released. The sound of that album reminds me of the 70s; it was a time when punk, disco, and new wave were all exploding but ol’ Tom stayed the course and wrote a perfect rock album. We were struck with how beautiful the guitars sounded – really silky and graceful. We started out with two guitarists and then we added two more, which allows the music to soar. We’re going to pay this album the respect it deserves note for note, cut for cut – that’s all you need.” – Craig Martin, Founder of Classic Albums Live

DONATE Our donors generously support access to the arts through Arts Adventures, The Rose’s Education Series. By becoming a donor, you give more students the opportunity to experience the transformative power of performing arts, as an audience member or performer, right here in our city.

TICKET BURSARIES While our ticket price of $9 per student (including tax) is one of the lowest in the GTA, it can still be too expensive for many families. The Rose works with school boards to identify schools in need of financial assistance.

SHAKE IT UP! STUDENT SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL This program is free for schools to participate. All schools have equal access to an opportunity to perform on The Rose Mainstage without the additional production costs.

CENTRE STAGE Our audition-based performance program is free for any successful participant, and for attending schools of the matinĂŠe performance. Donations support this program by covering additional costs such as honorariums to guest panelists and professional mentors, photography and videography. Visit our website or call our Box Office for more information about The Rose Donor Program.

2019 2020 Arts Adventures, The Rose’s Education series, provides opportunities for students to experience live performance that captivates, inspires, educates, and entertains. Before humans could read or write, they could draw, sing, dance, and act. Inherently part of how we have evolved, the arts have always been an integral part of communication and education; a way to share histories, illustrate ideas, and establish collective understanding as a larger community. Educational and entertaining, all of the shows have curriculum connections and most come with Study Guides full of resources and activities you can use before and after the show. Explore ideas and conversations in a way that engages your students’ senses with Arts Adventures at The Rose! To learn more about Arts Adventures, visit our website, or contact us at roseeducation@brampton.ca.
