FATTY LEGS OCTOBER 17, 2018 10 AM & 12:30 PM

Fatty Legs, set in Canada’s far north, is the story of Olemaun Pokiak who dreams of learning to read. But when she arrives at Residential School she is given the name Margaret, has her long braids cut off, and is made to wear itchy red wool socks as an example of her “unworthiness.” It is a profound yet accessible true story that brings to light the suffering created by residential schools while celebrating the deep strength of a child who refused to be broken by her experiences. Residential schools were a central part of Canada’s attempt to dismantle Indigenous culture and assimilate or eliminate Indigenous people. Help your students to understand. Inspire them to talk. Reconciliation cannot begin until the truth has been heard. Recommended for Grades 6 – 12.

STUDENT SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

SPRING 2019

The SHAKE it Up! Student Shakespeare Festival provides a forum for students from different schools to work together to perform a play on stage at The Rose. With the support of The Rose Theatre Academy, each school creates a team of actors, stage managers, crew, and designers and then prepares, workshops and rehearses a 30-minute version of a Shakespeare play. This non-competitive environment is a unique opportunity for students to be introduced to Shakespeare, and understand real-life themes through experiential learning. As the students work on the project together, applying their newly-formed skills, they boost their self-confidence and creativity while building leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.

APRIL 11, 2019 - 12:30 PM Centre Stage offers young people performance experience, as well as the full-star treatment! This is a great opportunity for students of all ages to cheer on their peers as they perform on a professional stage. Auditions for local talent of all kinds begin in fall 2018, from kindergarten through Grade 12. You never know - you could see one of your students onstage!
