ARTS AND CULTURE

2015 ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

It gives us great pleasure to present the City of Brampton’s first Annual Report on Arts and Culture.

For over 10 years, the Rose Theatre has brought the world to Brampton’s doorstep. Since its revitalization, Garden Square is increasingly becoming a popular gathering space for families and visitors; providing year-round programming free to all.

The last few years have been transformative in many ways. We’ve had opportunities to rethink our approach to arts and culture programming and services. More recently we’ve had opportunities to begin meaningful collaboration with the local cultural sector and with our key partners including the Brampton Library, Peel Archives (PAMA) and the new downtown BIA and community groups.

Increasingly, there is a feeling that we don’t always have to go elsewhere to be entertained, to experience cultural events or to be wined and dined. The Recreation and Culture team is hard at work building new and interesting cultural programming, collaborating, promoting and reaching out to the community.

What we’re finding is that there’s convergence and palpable excitement about downtown vibrancy – there’s a growing tremendous eagerness to play a strategic role in Brampton’s creative sector.

However, our successes belong to the community. We have been blessed to have loyal and vocal patrons, subscribers, sponsors, volunteers and community partners. Not much is possible without collaboration and cross-promotion. For these important relationships we are extremely grateful and appreciative.

This report provides only some insight into that growing vibrancy through highlights of the City’s 2015 arts and culture programs and services. We are excited to share some goals for 2016, and to provide a glimpse of some wonderful cultural initiatives to come.

Sincerely,

Brampton’s unique blend of cultures and assorted spaces where arts and culture grows is distinctive. Besides the many parks and gardens, such spaces as Garden Square, Gage Park, and the Rose Theatre have hosted local and world-class entertainment for residents and tourists alike to enjoy through the years.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015

HIGHLIGHT

ENGAGING AND SUPPORTING YOUTH

Engaging and supporting youth is essential for the future. 2015 saw the introduction of holiday camps which were a huge hit along with the regular summer camp programming. This year’s Centre Stage Youth Concert & Awards Gala was also revitalized by converting it to a free event (with the donation of a non-perishable food item to the Brampton Food Sharing Network), that saw huge spikes in attendance to cheer on Brampton’s talented youth. The “Shake it Up!” Student Shakespeare Festival also continued this year with 4 schools returning along with the addition of 4 new schools. Overall, we have built on last year and fortified our efforts to engage and support youth within the community.

ARTS AND CULTURE

2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Brampton is home to a growing network of artists, artisans and committed community groups dedicated to the development and preservation of the arts in Brampton - who want to remain in the community. With the closing of the Brampton Arts Council in 2014, the City of Brampton committed to creating regular opportunities for the arts community to come together to network and promote their businesses. In 2015 the Creative Exchange networking event debuted; a platform for like-minded individuals to come together on a regular basis. Supporting this initiative is the monthly Creative Exchange e-newsletter providing an opportunity for the arts community to highlight what they’re doing and for the City to spread the word about what’s happening in arts and culture across the city.
