Welcome to Arts Adventures, The Rose’s Education Series for students to experience live performance that captivates, inspires, educates, and entertains. Before humans could read or write, we could draw, sing, dance, and act. Inherently part of how we have evolved, the arts have always been an integral part of communication and education; a way to share histories, illustrate ideas, and establish collective understanding as a larger community. The Arts Adventures performances and in-class workshops are tools to enhance your lessons. Educational and entertaining, all of the shows have curriculum connections and most come with Study Guides full of resources and activities you can use before and after the show. Explore ideas and conversations in a way that engages your students’ senses with Arts Adventures at The Rose!

For 50 years, it has successfully helped kids grow smarter, stronger, and kinder, while becoming an iconic part of childhood in Canada, and around the world. Continue the tradition with your students and celebrate this amazing anniversary with Sesame Street Live! NOVEMBER 20, 2019 10 AM & 12:30 PM After receiving backlash for instigating a student protest at her high school, Moira is initially supported by her best friends Simon and Connor. However, Simon’s support turns to anger after learning his feelings for Moira are not reciprocated. Feeling “friend-zoned”, Simon leaks a humiliating video mash-up of Moira’s protest speech, and there are consequences he cannot control. Scrutinising the tremendous impact of social media in young people’s lives, and the murky line between friendship and romance, The Code will engage students in conversations about accountability, consent, and what’s at stake when lines are crossed.

Created by acclaimed choreographer Bengt Jörgen in collaboration with the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the production is a remarkable fusion of ballet and classical music on a backdrop of iconic Canadian winter paintings, such as Franklin Carmichael’s Church and Houses at Bisset (1931), Tom Thompson’s Snow in the Woods (1916), and L.L. Fitzgerald’s Trees and Wildflowers (1922).

Travis Knights and Jazz United guide students through a brief history of tap dance and jazz music spanning 2 centuries, connecting the two art forms while illustrating their impact on civil rights and much of the entertainment we enjoy today. More than dance and music, Tap and Jazz are folkloric artifacts excavated and recreated from the memory of a forbidden history of displaced Africans. Through a mix of live performance, archival footage, storytelling, and a short tap lesson for everyone, students will see and hear history that can’t be captured in text books.

SHAKE IT UP! STUDENT SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL APPLY ONLINE BEGINNING FALL 2019! Recommended for Grades 5 and up.

The SHAKE It Up! Student Shakespeare Festival provides a forum for students from different schools to work together to perform a play on stage at The Rose. With the support of instructors from The Rose, each school creates a team of actors, stage managers, crew, and designers and then prepares, workshops and rehearses a 30-minute version of a Shakespeare play. This non-competitive environment is a unique opportunity for students to be introduced to Shakespeare, and understand real-life themes through experiential learning. As the students work on the project together, applying their newly-formed skills, they boost self-confidence and creativity while building leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.

“Just wanted to give a big thank you for all your and your team’s hard work and support throughout this process. Our parents were so thrilled with the production, and the kids could not have been prouder of themselves. It is such a huge accomplishment for them and they felt confident and well-supported by all of you!” - Emily Hastings Speck, Balmoral Drive Sr. Public School
