2016 Brampton Culture Guide

MAYOR LINDA JEFFREY

Mayor's Message

On behalf of the City of Brampton and all of Council I am proud to present our Culture Guide. Building a strong foundation for arts and culture is key to creating meaningful experiences in our city. Arts and culture is part of the fabric of our city and a strategic resource which we want to grow. Not only does it enrich our emotional world, it has a significant impact on our economy, health and social wellbeing. A strong arts community can showcase the lives of our residents and acts as a catalyst to help residents and visitors to discover this city that we choose to call home. This guide features events, workshops and useful information on our partners in arts and culture; providing insights on where we are, where we came from and where we are going as a city. Consider this your one-stop place to go for all things arts and culture! I would like to thank Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA), Downtown Brampton BIA and Brampton Libraries for their involvement and contribution to this guide. Let’s continue to make Brampton a thriving home for those who appreciate and value arts and culture. Mayor Linda Jeffrey

DISCOVER DOWNTOWN BRAMPTON BY KAROLINA WEGLARZ

Step foot into Downtown Brampton’s buzzing core and you’ll get a taste of it all: food, sports, entertainment, and the arts. As one of Canada’s most diverse cities, Downtown Brampton is a budding hub of culture that has transformed over the years to bring a sense of community and pride to the city scene. Heritage buildings act as the backdrop to anything from family movies in Garden Square, to Thursday evening concerts at Gage Park, to date nights at the many food destinations in the heart of the city. So get out and take a stroll through Downtown Brampton...you have no idea what you’re missing this summer otherwise.

SHOP Looking for trendy, stylish, one-of-a-kind pieces that’ll have heads turning as you cross the street? Downtown Brampton is home to dozens of eclectic shops that promise just that. From handcrafted, custom jewellery, to bridal boutiques, fur retailers, and consignment stores, there’s something to fit everyone’s personal tastes. African and Latin grocers also add cultural flavours to the city core with tasty authentic treats from their respective countries. Drop in for an empanada, or two. Finally, if you’re looking to pick up a bouquet of flowers, you don’t have to wait for Saturday’s Farmers' Market to do so. McArtur Lane houses Downtown Brampton’s only floral shop, promising to make the perfect arrangement for any occasion.

THRIVE Unwind, relax, and treat your body right with the many services Downtown Brampton has to offer. Wellness clinics provide the perfect mental getaway after a busy workweek. Whether you’re looking for a massage, to take part in a yoga session, reflexology treatment, or reiki, you’ll find it all in Downtown Brampton. Why stop at only making yourself feel good on the inside? A handful of spas are ready to cater to your hair, nails, laser therapy, and waxing needs, helping to make you look and feel your best. Although if you’re really looking to make a change and get fit, Total Body Fitness promises personal training sessions that focus on your total body health and well-being.

THE CITY OF BRAMPTON CULTURE GUIDE

PLAY If you’re looking for organic and locally grown produce, look no further than the Downtown Brampton Farmers' Market. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, it runs every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. until October 8. With everything from fresh produce, honey, flowers, to ciders, jewellery vendors, and crafts, we guarantee that you won’t be leaving empty-handed. Garden Square offers free weekly entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Whether you’re cheering on your favourite team in the Euro Cup, catching a movie under the stars on Thursday or Saturday night, or taking part in free fitness classes every Tuesday, Brampton has it all!

WORK Sometimes, we all need a little help when it comes to our finances, the job market, and education. Bank branches offer financial services and insurance brokers are there to help with your legal needs. Access Employment helps qualified employees find their employer match and get them started towards a successful career. Finally, why look to other cities to get a university education when there is one just at your doorstep. Algoma University promises small class sizes and offers 30 academic programs in a diverse range of fields. A small university, with a big promise of maintaining fulfilling relationships with faculty and staff to help students succeed beyond their time at Algoma.

EAT Unleash the inner foodie in you and sample everything that the Downtown core has to offer, because there definitely is no shortage of places to grab a tasty bite to eat in the heart of the city. Fine dining restaurants, such as Cantina Fellini and Fanzorelli’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, cafes such as Coffee Culture and The House of Cards Board Game Cafe, and bakeries such as Dolcezza Custom Cakes and MacaronZ, will satisfy any craving. Whether you want to enjoy an alcoholic beverage or a refreshing iced tea, there’s a patio waiting for you. Follow along on Twitter with the hashtag #FindYourFlavour to share and discover all the food ventures Downtown Brampton has to offer. If that’s not enough for you, check out our seven short videos of local #DowntownEats that’ll be sure to get your stomachs growling.

DISCOVER Brampton is a city full of heritage and culture. Did you know that the buildings that now house the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) date back to the 19th century and used to be the historic Peel County Courthouse, Peel County Jail, Registry Office and County Office? Today PAMA’s art exhibitions feature works from local, regional, and national artists, catering to the different background of visitors that pass through its doors. You can visit the Canada at Play: 100 Years of Games, Toys, and Sports exhibit from June 18 to August 21 and explore traditional toys and sports enjoyed by Canadians over the past 100 years. This past May, the Festival of Literacy Diversity (FOLD) brought readers, writers, and educators from across the country to showcase diverse authors and stories for the first time in Brampton. More than 30 Canadian authors were part of the weekend, where programs engaged readers, inspired writers, and empowered educators. Beaux-Arts Brampton is a non-profit, artist-run centre that profiles visual artists in the Brampton community. The gallery provides exhibits for everyone and even offers classes for children, teens, and adults. Admission to Beaux-Arts Brampton is free.
