SIR PETER HALL

CBE

(1930-2017)

On 11 September this year, we learnt that our founding artistic director and personal friend of mine, Sir Peter Hall, died surrounded by his family at the age of 86. Peter was a giant of British theatre, with an illustrious career spanning well over half a century. Throughout his life he directed premieres of plays from now established playwrights including Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett, Peter Schaffer and Alan Ayckbourn, as well as ground-breaking productions of William Shakespeare. He founded the Royal Shakespeare Company at the age of 29; during his tenure as Director of the National Theatre, he oversaw the move from the Old Vic, establishing the company in its current home on the South Bank; and his influence was integral to the creation of the Rose. Peter first became involved in the Rose at the invitation of the chairman of Kingston Theatre Trust, David Jacobs when it was a shell of a building in 2003. At that time there were no doors, no staircases, there weren’t even many walls. Yet despite all that, Peter saw extraordinary potential in the theatre. He brought his own production of As You Like It to a half-finished auditorium for a three week run and hosted fundraising galas with Judi Dench and Jimmy Tarbuck, all with temporary lighting, temporary seating and portable loos. He not only demonstrated how to make the space work but raised both funds and the profile of the theatre too and put the Rose on a higher platform to be able to secure its future.

In 2008, our first year of opening, extraordinarily we managed to mount our first Rose Production - Love’s Labour’s Lost directed by Peter Hall. Quite simply, he put us on the map. On the one hand, Peter was a fiercely intelligent person, an ambitious leader and a great public speaker, who could command attention instantly purely with his words. Yet on the other, he had tremendous warmth and was hugely generous, teaching young actors about his views on Shakespeare. Peter always had a genuine delight at being in the rehearsal room, working intimately with a group of actors and a text to create an original and pioneering production. Rose Theatre Kingston continues on through his legacy: casting strong ensemble companies to create excellent, interesting and thought provoking theatre for everyone. We will always be grateful for the passion and energy he gave to the theatre.

So, a fantastic season to lead us into our 10th birthday. As a registered charity, none of this could be done without you, our beloved audience and supporters. There are many ways to support the Rose and gain a full-range of benefits, read on to find out more.

Beneath its witty surface, Much Ado About Nothing is a powerful exploration of the struggle for love, identity and self-knowledge in a male-dominated world – as relevant today as ever. Our production will use Shakespeare’s language in a sharp contemporary setting that not only offers glorious opportunities for physical comedy amid the furnishings of a spa hotel but also provides a social context that enhances the darker themes in this timeless comic gem. Starring Mel Giedroyc as Beatrice, Much Ado About Nothing is a Rose co-production with Granville & Parham Productions and antic | face. A household name for her television presenting and comedy work, Mel’s theatre credits include Luce (Southwark Playhouse), Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour (UK Tour), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Playhouse Theatre), Eurobeat (Novello) and New Boy (Trafalgar Studios).

Could this be the final curtain for the world’s greatest detective? Sherlock Holmes lives in retirement on the South Coast. Aware that he’s older and slower, he’s concerned that he might have lost his touch, paranoid that he is an easy target for his enemies. So when Mary Watson (wife of his former associate Dr John Watson) tracks him down, telling him she has seen her long-dead son, James, through the window of 221B Baker Street, apparently alive and well, Holmes is determined to solve the mystery and confront his own demons at the same time. Chilling, gripping and filled with unforeseen twists and revelations, this new thriller and world premiere production reunites the dream team of Robert Powell (Jesus of Nazareth, Holby City) and Liza Goddard (Lady Windermere's Fan, Doctor Who, Bergerac).
