rosewood arts centre Rosewood Arts Centre is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for the residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area by providing creative experiences through the arts. Rosewood presents over 400 classes annually for youth and adults, as well as gallery exhibitions, theatre performances, artist studios and special events. A division of the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Rosewood is supported and programmed by the City of Kettering, with additional support provided by the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rosewood is open extended hours on Saturdays and open on Sundays during the school year. Drop-in studio will be open for ceramics, dance, painting, drawing, glass, jewelry, theatre, dance and the darkroom. Yoga in the Gallery Ages: 16+

Join us at Rosewood Gallery for an open level yoga class with Robyn Moore, RYT 200. This class is of a gentler nature, often focusing on shoulders, hips and low back, with the breath being the center of the practice. Class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners. Art with Buddies Ages: 3 – 6

Drop by Rosewood and whip up a masterpiece. This drop-in format class allows the opportunity to have your young ones explore a wide range of art materials while offering the flexibility to come when it suits your busy schedule.

An art class for kids on the Autism Spectrum, Art with Buddies is a special class for kids with ASD. Each student, with the aid of their own “Buddy” (caretaker), will get individualized attention from an experienced art teacher.

Zombie Drawing Ages: 8 – 12

Engage your braaaiiin and learn the basics of illustration. This fun, Halloween themed workshop is taught by a professional drawing instructor and offers kids an introduction to illustration penciling, inking and coloring techniques.

Exploring Hand Built Pottery Skills

Wheel Pottery for Teens

A pottery class just for teens that focuses on developing skills with the potter’s wheel. Beginners learn basic centering and form-building. Students with more experience hone their skills with more advanced techniques and forms. Parent & Child Mosaic Ages: 5 – 10

Plan a fun play date with your favorite kiddo and explore the art of mosaic! In this family-friendly class, adults and kids will collaborate to create a colorful 10 inch x 10 inch mosaic on a wooden wall panel from glass, mirrors, beads, glass globs and much more! All materials are pre-cut and each adult/child team is provided with a mosaic tool to fine tune tesserae (pieces in a mosaic). YOUTH THEATRE Basic Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This class provides instruction in the basic theatre skills of pantomime, movement, voice and diction, improvisation, script work, audition techniques and performing a monologue. ADULT / TEEN CERAMICS Reduction Firing

Get unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space needed in a single firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Raku Firing Event Ages: 16+

Advanced Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. Come participate in an exciting alternative firing technique! Bring 2-4 bisqued pieces and use provided glazes to create lustrous finishes and achieve unusual results. Introduction to Wheel Pottery Ages: 16+

This class focuses on the basics of creating forms on the potter’s wheel. Students explore making traditional tableware including bowls, cups and mugs with self-directed projects for more experienced students. Special surface decoration and glazing techniques are also covered to achieve unique results. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. Kettering Children’s Theatre Ages: 9 – 15

The Kettering Children’s Theatre production is a youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and/or Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre or by permission of the instructor. If you have previous theatre experience but have not taken either class at Rosewood you may perform a monologue at auditions. The monologue must be memorized. Monologues will be available in the Rosewood Arts Centre front office. All potential participants are encouraged to take at least one acting class or a summer camp. Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is strongly encouraged. A mandatory parent meeting is scheduled September 3 from 5 to 6 p.m. Registration deadline for the fall production is September 3, 2019. Clay Hand Building Ages: 16+

This is a beginning class for students with little to no hand building experience. Instruction is given for making tiles, vessels and sculptural forms using clay slabs and coils. Surface enrichment as well as glaze application is also covered. Students work with their own ideas at their own pace. Intermediate Wheel Pottery Ages: 16+

Students will focus on creating larger pots, refining shapes and challenging students to become better potters. Surface Decoration for Wheel Thrown Forms Ages: 16+

This class is designed for beginning and intermediate students looking to improve the finished aesthetic of their work. Students will explore various ways to add interest to thrown pots with decorative processes. By creating and using under-glazes, students will learn a variety of techniques to add unique surface appearances to their work. Students will create thrown pieces for decoration in this class, previous throwing experience is required. Class fee provides each student clay, glazes and related firings. Using prepared cartoon animal templates, students will needle felt their own cat or dog animal magnet based on their own pets. Starting with a blank felt sheet, they will learn how to needle felt a simple animal portrait using colored wool and art markers while referencing photographs they provide of their own pets. This two hour class is perfect for new needle felters and requires minimal prior experience or training. All supplies provided.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

Rosewood Arts Centre Canceled Classes

Rosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

Artist Studios

Artist studios are available at Rosewood Arts Centre for artists with an active practice and a commitment to sharing their work with the Kettering community. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed as studio spaces become available. Studio spaces start at $85/month for Kettering residents. POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $20 includes 25 pounds of clay and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants. DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

GLASS STUDIO: The glass studio is available to students who wish to finish class work, have attended a class previously or have prior experience in cold or warm glass. Participants must be at least 16 years old and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Fees for kiln or torch usage are $5 respectively for up to 3 hours.

ARTLOCAL A Bee’s Ambition is the latest project of the ArtLocal program in Kettering! With a theme of bees, Jes McMillan of the Mosaic Institute of Greater Dayton created a new series of permanent sidewalk game artworks for the Haverstick neighborhood, working closely with students from Beavertown Elementary, Kettering Middle School, and the local community at Rosewood Arts Centre. SCHANTZ AVENUE BRIDGE

This fall, the Schantz Avenue Bridge will be completed, and include the artwork of renowned artist Vicki Scuri. Her work encompasses elements of the historic trolley line that ran along Dixie Highway and inspiration from the neighborhood of Southern Hills.

REGIONAL ART COLLECTION AT THE KETTERING GOVERNMENT CENTER Featuring several of the most accomplished visual artists of Kettering and the Miami Valley, the Regional Art Collection represents photographs, paintings and prints, from Kettering’s own parks to nearby Clifton Gorge. The Regional Art Collection is accessible to the public by special appointment and scheduled tours. RESIDENT STATUS

The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident and non-resident users. To receive resident rates when attending drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering: • A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address.

• Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering:

• Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger):

• School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under. The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION

For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

We strive for positive experiences and excellence in everything we do. All refunds will be made according to the following guidelines: • If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund. • If you were unable to attend a set of classes, we will try to transfer you to another section. Otherwise, we will offer a 50% refund of the class price. • Special consideration will be given for life altering situations. • Refund requests must be made within 30 days of a registered program’s end date. Refunds will be issued via the following method: If the original transaction was paid using cash, check or household credit, the refund will be issued via City check. If the original transaction was paid by credit or debit card, the refund will be issued back to the card used for payment. There will be no cash refunds. This policy does not apply to facility rentals. See your rental contract for cancellation details.

NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS

Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.

ADA MODIFICATIONS

The City of Kettering understands the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. We invite participation by people with disabilities, alongside people without disabilities, in our programs, sites and facilities. The Modification Request Form is available at all Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts front desks as well as online at www.playkettering.org/modification. Please fill out and return to the front desk or email completed form to kettprca@ ketteringoh.org after you've enrolled. We want you to begin the program on time. The sooner we know about your needs and how we can support you in our programs, the more likely participation will not be delayed. However, if delays in communication occur, we will delay the start of program participation. Please register early and submit this request form early.
