SIGNING INTERPRETER AVAILABLE The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is pleased to offer a signing interpreter for hearingimpaired patrons who want to take a class at Rosewood Arts Centre or the Kettering Recreation Complex. MEETING SPACE & ROOM RENTAL Rosewood Arts Centre provides a pleasant, creative and comfortable atmosphere for group or individual needs for meeting space. Meeting rooms include requested table and chair arrangements, as well as large slide or projector screens. All rooms are equipped with cloak and sink areas. Parking is free, convenient and safe. Applications for meeting space are accepted continuously for daily and quarterly rentals. If your organization or group has been searching for an affordable meeting place, call (937) 296-0294.

Rosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

OPEN STUDIOS Open studio sessions are designed to allow artists and craftspeople the opportunity to work on their own in a creative environment with the necessary equipment perhaps not available to them at home. The studios are open for independent work Monday through Saturday. Hours are determined by class schedule. Call (937) 296-0294. VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open studio fees to stay longer than 15 minutes. Children under five years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, should sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended. STUDENT POLICY: Students currently enrolled in classes will receive a student pass card. This card is used for studio time needed to develop skill and complete projects. Students staying over 30 minutes after the class period must sign in and use this pass card. OPEN STUDIO FEES: Pottery – Sculpture – Painting – Enameling – Glass – Dance Drop-in fee per visit: $4/resident; $8/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $30/resident; $60/non-resident. Supplies are not included in open studio fees. LOCKER RENTAL: Lockers are available for rental on a pre-pay six-month or yearly basis. Six-month: $20/resident; $25/non-resident. Yearly: $35/resident; $45/non-resident. POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $19 includes 25 pounds of clay and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants. Please call (937) 296-0294 with your name and phone number. DARKROOM: The darkroom is available for use by individuals during regular Rosewood Arts Centre hours, except when classes are scheduled. A notice is posted announcing class dates and times. Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes, and attend a Rosewood orientation and familiarization session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment. Darkroom fee per visit: $5/resident; $10/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $35/resident; $70/non-resident. Reminder: Discount cards must be processed by the individual holder. Discount cards are for individual use only and not to be shared among friends or family. 1

KETTERING ARTS COUNCIL The Kettering Arts Council, in partnership and collaboration with the community, strives to provide access to the arts for all ages, encourage a passion for the arts, and promote art appreciation and education. The Kettering Arts Council is a 15-member citizen advisory committee overseen by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. The Arts Council meets every third Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Rosewood Arts Centre. Dance students will be in class without parents. Please be sure your child can participate independently.

DANCE APPAREL Dance classes, such as ballet and tap, are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are safer than socks. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. Dance shoes are available at many local retailers and local dance apparel stores. Leotards and tights are optional as well. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Only the spring session includes a dance review. For information, call (937) 296-0294.

Stretch & Point Age(s) 3 – 6 This is an introduction to coordination and movement. Ballet, jazz and tumbling are combined for girls and boys. Monday and Tuesday at 10 a.m. are designed especially for beginners who are 3 years old. YOUTH MUSIC The Kettering Children’s Choir The Kettering Children’s Choir was founded in 1986, and now includes over 200 singers, ages 8 to 18, from 30 communities within nine Miami Valley counties. The Choraleers, Chorus, Chorale, and Concert Choir sing music of all periods and types, from Renaissance to contemporary, and rehearse weekly at Rosewood Arts Centre. The Cappella, a regional high school honors choir, is a college prep program in residence at Wright State University. The Concert Choir and the Cappella tour nationally and internationally. Past performance tour highlights include: • Mozart Festival - Salzburg, Austria • Concert with Czech Philharmonic Children’s Chorus Prague, Czech Republic • Performances at Westminster Abbey and Coventry Cathedral - England • Touring and performances throughout Austria, England, Wales and Germany • In concert at the National Cathedral - Washington D.C. • Epcot Candlelight Processional with Disney Orchestra Orlando • Participation in Mass at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy. • Tour to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and Hong Kong, China. Color Me Rad! Age(s) 7 – 11 Come use your artistic skills and make colorful, projects! We will be using a variety of materials on each of our projects, ranging from colored pencils, markers and pastels to paint and food coloring. Each project will be new and exciting and teach you a little about simple color theory. We’ll learn about complimentary colors and explore what colors work well together and what colors don’t. Let’s Draw! Age(s) 8 – 11 Children will learn about line, shape and value, while working on projects that encourage creativity. Cartooning for Kids Age(s) 8 – 12 Get those creative cartoon ideas down on paper! Instruction begins with the basics of working with shapes to create original characters. Making Comics! Age(s) 12 – 15 In the Making Comics class, your child will learn about some of the comic book classics. They will be able to develop their own characters; put them into their own comic strip or start their own comic book. They will be able to work in black and white, simple color to advanced color. Drawing Animé Age(s) 10 – 15 This class will introduce students to the art of the Japanese illustration style Manga, or Animé, as seen in popular cartoons Dragonball Z and Pokemon. YOUTH/TEEN DRAMATIC ARTS Basic Theatre Instruction Age(s) 9 – 15 or 4th to 9th grade This class provides instruction in the basic theatre skills of pantomime, movement, voice and diction, improvisation, script work, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces) and performing a monologue. Advanced Theatre Instruction Age(s) 9 – 15 or 4th to 9th grade Building on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction, we will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. Artist in Residence: Melissa Godoy Melissa Godoy, a filmmaker based in Cincinnati, was an Artist in Residence at Fairmont High School and Rosewood Arts Centre this winter. Students of Laura Hutchens and Susan Bennett, as well as members of the community, collaborated to create short films and an interactive website based on stories of the people of Kettering. Films, artworks, and more will be featured in a public event and online at rosewood.ketteringoh.org. along with the final screening date and time details. This residency was supported by the City of Kettering and the Ohio Arts Council.

CAMP ROSEWOOD Rosewood Arts Centre offers an exciting variety of summer art camps. This year Camp Rosewood features week-long camps including Theatre, Cartooning, Painting, and Wheel Pottery. This year’s featured one-day camps include Prints on the Fly, Clay Day and One Day Animé and many more. Camp Rosewood expands this year with special Camper Sampler and Camp Remix one-day camps to start and finish the 2013 summer camp season. The summer session will be held from May 30 to August 6, 2013. Keep in mind some camps do fill up early, so register soon! Esther Randall and Benjamin Swallow Duke Saturday, May 18, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Rosewood Gallery — FREE Join Rosewood Gallery artists, Esther Randall and Benjamin Swallow Duke as they discuss their work on display in the gallery. Randall explains her digital ‘drawings’ called “sCapes” in which she combines landscape drawings and photos of coffee grounds to create images that reference Asian landscapes. She will also discuss her bronze and welded steel sculptures. Duke will discuss how he approaches the figure ground relationship Esther Randall in his work, and his use of Double Capriccio 2 bronze, steel multiple elements to create a visually larger whole.

Reduction Firing

Glass Etching: Beer Stein

To participate in the reduction firings, potters may purchase multiples of a 1,000 cubic inch “firing package.” When at least 8 but no more than 18 “firing packages” have been purchased, and the pots have been glazed, a firing is scheduled. Each firing is scheduled around other activities in the Kitchen/Kiln room and the Theatre. Firing package includes use of the kitchen for glazing.

Beginning Belly Dancing Age(s) 16 + Belly dancing, a feminine tradition, has an ancient history. It was started in the Middle East as a series of motions to strengthen the pelvic and abdominal muscles in preparation for childbirth. ADULT/TEEN MUSIC Kettering Civic Band Age(s) 18 + Celebrating their 55th year, the Kettering Civic Band has performed throughout the region and Canada as well as in sister cities, Steyr, Austria and Kettering, England. The band rehearses each Monday evening at the Kettering Middle School throughout the year. Summer performance schedules include community concerts and large public festivals. SPRING 2013 FACULTY LIST Dale Archer co-owns Gemini Dance Studio. Jean Ann Bolliger is a B.F.A. graduate from Miami University. Her clay forms range from functional vessel to ceramic sculpture. Dale Boydston studied fine art with an emphasis on ceramic arts at the College of the Dayton Art Institute and Sinclair Community College. He is currently devoting his time to studio ceramic design, art photography and teaching. David Brand Over a period of 25 years, David Brand has developed what began as a hobby into a serious second career as a jeweler/metalsmith. He exhibits at national level juried art shows and has won numerous first place and best of show awards for his jewelry and sculpture. He developed his metals skills by attending workshops with nationally known metal artists and by extended self study and research. Along with his wife Sandra, he maintains a large studio in Dayton where they teach lost wax casting and other jewelry workshops. Jane Brennan holds a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Dayton. She has taught in a variety of settings and has experience in many art media. Rebekah Bucnis-Thompson holds a B.F.A. in Photography from the University of Dayton and teaches at Stivers School for the Arts. She has been working in photography since 2003. Matthew R. Burgy is a sculptor, painter and printmaker from Waynesville, Ohio. He holds a both Masters of Education in multi-age visual arts and a B.F.A. in printmaking and sculpture from Wright State University. Matthew’s artwork has been professionally exhibited in museums such as the Dayton Art Institute. He is currently also an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton, where he teacher the fundamentals of art and its use in the classroom to education. 14

Amanda Bush has lived in Italy (Rome and Florence) for the past five years, perfecting the language and earning both her BA and MA in Italian Studies. She taught English while abroad and enjoys teaching language. Teresa Connair earned a B.F.A. from Wright State University. She has experience in film, theater and radio and television commercials. Her directing includes Oakwood Community Center Youth Summer Theatre and Washington Township Youth Theatre as well as Rosewood Arts Centre. Greg Dearth graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He is a member of the Portrait Society of America and has been a guest lecturer and instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design and Atlanta’s Portfolio Center. His work has been included in many of the juried Society of Illustrators’ annual shows, Communication Arts, American Illustration and Print magazines. Andy Dailey currently teaches drawing, painting and 2D design at Miami University at Middletown and works as Youth Art Program Coordinator at the Rosewood Arts Centre. He earned a BFA from Wright State University in 2005 and an MFA from Miami University in 2009. His recent exhibitions and awards include: Contemporary Realism Biennial, 2012, Ft. Wayne Museum of Art, Ft. Wayne IN, International Painting Annual, Manifest Gallery and Creative Research Center, Cincinnati, OH, Juried Exhibition in Print, Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, 2011, Andrew Dailey: Recent Drawings, Diane Kidd Gallery, Tiffin University, Jeanne Bowman Ellenstein Purchase Award, 2009. He is the proud father of son Liam and daughter Phoenix. Sammie Sue Edmondson has studied dance since she was seven years old. She studied in New York City and at Sinclair Community College.

SPRING 2013 FACULTY LIST Pearl Grefer has studied Ballroom Dancing of all types for over 20 years from Sam Sodano. She has studied body mechanics for over 15 years. She received the Top Teachers awards in 3 National competitions.

Nancy Lynn Boss (Nadeja) has been teaching various dance styles for 40 years – 28 of those years have been at Rosewood Arts Centre. She has studied dance with Jorg Fastings from the Columbus Ballet Company and Ballet Arts in New York City.

Gary Halsey attended the Art Students League of NY in painting under D.Greene and anatomy under R.B. Hale and has an MFA from the University of Cincinnati. He worked in his own business as a book cover illustrator and mural painter in NYC for over 20 years.

Roland Muncy is a self-employed caricature artist. His work has been seen throughout the Dayton area.

Kate Isaacs is currently attending Sinclair Community College where she will graduate this summer. She has studied both Fine Art and Creative Writing. She has been featured in various art shows and short story contests around the country. A unique and creative individual Kate enjoys teaching children to challenge themselves in order to develop their skills as well as to have fun with everything you do. To see more information see Kateelore.com Trish Jeffers-Zeh is certified in the progressive new medium of Metal Clays. With 30 years professionally working as an artist and teacher she shares her expanding knowledge with others to explore, jewelry making, sculpture, metals, glass fusing, lapidary and mixed media. She has a degree in mental health and uses her ever growing knowledge of group dynamics to aide others in “Unlocking their Hidden Doors of Creativity” to manifest adornments in life. J. Austin Jennings has been teaching art in the Dayton area since 1994. Her acrylic paintings and collage pieces are shown and collected across the country and have earned many awards, including a featured spot in The Artist’s Magazine’s Year’s Best Art issue in December 2009. She is the recipient of the 2012 Pamela Houk Award for Excellence in Art Education in Southwest Ohio. Jennings is a member of Dayton Visual Arts Center, Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, and Arts & Culture Alliance, Knoxville, TN. Tom Kinarney is a former professional artist who has done freelance illustration for numerous companies, locally and throughout the country. He has taught art for the last ten years at the former Riverbend Art Center and at the Fairborn Art Association and currently at Rosewood Arts Centre. H. David Kirchner has a degree in art from Cedarville College. He also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. David operates the H. David Studio/Gallery in downtown Dayton. He has worked in clay since 1984. Donna Kuszpa has studied wirewrapping with John Kleber in Columbus. She has taught wirewrapping since 1993 at Riverbend Arts Centre. Katherine Lammers studied art at Wright State University. Katherine has worked at the Rosewood Arts Centre over the past summer as a Rec Aide and is now moving into the classroom to share her passion of art with students. Her specialty is paint but she has experience in many fields. April Lemaster has been studying ceramics for over a decade. She has attended numerous workshops and conferences for ceramic techniques around the country. She has exhibited her ceramic work and received awards in the greater Dayton region. Joann Lieswyn has a degree from Morehead State University and has been studying ceramics for many years. Her first clay instructor, Skizuko Alexander, was from Japan, and is influenced by Japanese-styled ceramics.

Jennifer Morris has been studying glass for a decade and specializes in stained glass jewelry design. She has also studied and showcased photography and interior design work in Ohio and Chicago. Her focus has been working with many local businesses and foster homes to create a greater focus on art and design in the community. Sandra Picciano-Brand has been working as a jewelry artist for over 25 years. She exhibits at national level juried art shows and has won numerous best of show and first place awards for her jewelry. Sandra has developed her metal skills with experimentation and personal research and by participation in workshops with internationally known artists. She maintains a large studio in Dayton with her husband, David, where they work, and teach jewelry/metals workshops. Steven Powers studied fine arts at Sinclair Community College. He received a Certificate in Photographic Technology. He also studied extensively in sculpture and ceramics. He now devotes his time to ceramics and teaching. Loretta Puncer received her B.F.A. in Commercial Design from the University of Dayton. She has been a practicing artist/painter for over 25 years. Mike Puckett is a mixed media artist specializing in urban style, collaborative painting, drawing and using alternative materials. He studied Fine Art at Cal State Polytechnic University of Pomona in the Los Angeles area. He has been exhibiting his artwork professionally for over a decade in galleries in Los Angeles, New York, and Ohio. He is also the co-owner of Rua Studio/Gallery. Linda Rice has been an art instructor for over eight years. In addition to teaching in the Philippines, Chicago, Pasadena and Dayton, she studied art education and art therapy. Marianne Scheibert has been dancing over a decade with specific training in classical ballet, tap, jazz, character, and modern dance technique. She has studied at the University of Dayton and DeWeese Academy of Dance Arts. She continues to participates in local dance performances and workshops while teaching dance for Rosewood Arts Centre. Pat Westby added beadmaking to her repertoire of art skills in 2001. She has taken classes at Miami University and participated in the International Society of Glass Beadmakers Conference. A member of the Miami Valley Lampwork Bead Artists, she has been invited to teach and demonstrate at Thompson Enamel and Fenton Art Glass Factory. Leonard Williams has been working with watercolors for over 20 years. He has also worked extensively with oils and created large scale images such as the mural behind the Town and Country Centre in Kettering. His work has been exhibited at DSPS Rosewood Gallery, and numerous other galleries in the area. Sharon Williams earned a B.A. in Social Work and Psychology from Thomas More College and has been working in ceramics for over a decade.

FEES Full payment for classes must be made at the time of registration. Resident fees are for those participants who either live or work within the Kettering city limits. Program fees for non-Kettering residents will be an additional 25 percent or $5, whichever is greater (not to exceed $10). Fees will be refunded if a class is full.

If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund.
