Parent & Child Mosaic Ages: 5 – 10

Plan a fun play date with your favorite kiddo and explore the art of mosaic! In this family-friendly class, adults and kids will collaborate to create a colorful 10 inch x 10 inch mosaic on a wooden wall panel from glass, mirrors, beads, glass globs and much more! All materials are pre-cut and each adult/child team is provided with a mosaic tool to fine tune tesserae (pieces in a mosaic). Well, the tooth fairy and the instructor, Jesy, talked and came up with the perfect solution—a tooth fairy approved pillow! This pillow has a pocket for your little one’s tooth! The pillow can be left in the living room on a shelf to make it easy for her to find, or even on the bed, but don’t hide it from her if you want that special treat for the tooth! Emoji pillows are all the rage and kids will love this class! Students choose an emoji, appliqué the face to the yellow fabric and finish by sewing together the pillow! A project that is “sew” much fun!

Dance classes are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are recommended, as well as comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. YOUTH EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT Meet Youth Instructor, Laura Ann Norris! Laura Ann Norris lives and works in Yellow Springs, where she enjoys combining art, nature and music into something beautiful. Her children’s classes bring kids into a freespirited world, where they can create and get really messy. She holds degrees in fine art and pre-art therapy. Among her numerous creative endeavors, her latest passion is creating art in gardens and teaching art classes at Rosewood Arts Centre.

Laura is a recent addition to the Rosewood faculty and teaches Parent and Child Painting, Youth Painting, Exploring Pottery Skills and more.

ADULT / TEEN CERAMICS Advanced Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. Reduction Firing

Get unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space needed in a single firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Introduction to Wheel Pottery Ages: 16+

This class focuses on the basics of creating forms on the potter’s wheel. Students explore making traditional tableware including bowls, cups and mugs with self-directed projects for more experienced students. Special surface decoration and glazing techniques are also covered to achieve unique results. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. Wheel Pottery

Surface Decoration for Wheel Thrown Forms

Wheel Pottery is for those who want to learn basic skills on the potter’s wheel. Although this is a beginning class, all skill levels are welcome. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. Clay tool kit required and may be purchased at Rosewood front office. *Skip week TBA

This class is designed for beginning and intermediate students looking to improve the finished aesthetic of their work. Students will explore various ways to add interest to thrown pots with decorative processes. From sgraffito and mishima inlay techniques at the leatherhard stage, to wax resist and alternative glazing techniques; you will learn a variety of techniques to add surface design and texture to your work. Students will create thrown pieces for decoration in this class, previous throwing experience is required. Class fee provides each student clay, glazes and related firings. Clay tool kit required and may be purchased at Rosewood front office.

The emphasis of this workshop is design, experimentation and personal development to create your own unique style. Students will focus on creating larger pots, refining shapes and challenging students to become better potters. Raku Workshop Ages: 16+

Explore the history and aesthetics of Raku, a traditional Japanese firing style. Students are provided with enough clay to make their own forms during the first class meeting. Students will make their own forms from Raku clay prior to the glazing session. All pieces must be bisque fired before the glazing session. All pieces are fired during the third class meeting, glaze results can be spectacular! Students must attend all 3 sessions. This 4-week workshop will focus on thrown and handbuilt forms for planting in. Drainage and volume will be considered as students learn to throw bigger and integrate slab-building techniques for larger forms. Some wheel pottery experience preferred. Esther Shimazu Workshop

Learn to Draw

Ages: 16+

World renowned ceramic artist Esther Shimazu leads a three-day hands-on intensive workshop. Students work alongside Shimazu as she demonstrates her methods leading students through the process of hand building elements of the human figure. This workshop will move at a fast pace and will cover a lot of information. Students learn the fundamentals of drawing through instructor technique and skill demonstrations and lots of practice. Students draw from still life motifs using graphite and charcoal. The class is an opportunity to experience the art of the visual journal. Participants will learn to make a simple sketch book, practice creative drawing and painting techniques, and incorporate these experiences into a daily practice. Both beginning and advanced artists are welcome to this class. The Art of Etching on Metal Ages: 16+

Etching by metalsmiths to decorate metal objects has been utilized since the Middle Ages and may even go back to antiquity. Students create a mixed metal pendant and/or earrings of their own design as time allows. Students learn to transfer an image that creates well defined etched lines into copper and mount it on a bronze or aluminum substrate by means of rivets. Amigurumi (pronounced “ah-me-goo-roomee”) is the Japanese art of using crochet to create cute stuffed critters of all kinds. Needle Felt Pet and Animal Portraits Ages: 16+

Students learn the art of needle felting while creating a 2-D portrait of a pet or animal from a photo. Students learn everything from how to cut a basic shape out of a wool sheet, coloration, markings, detailing using wool roving, card and blending different colors of wool, using fine art markers and felt pens to add smaller details and how to finish the project to make it a pin, magnet, or ornament. Celebrating their 59th year, the Kettering Civic Band has performed throughout the region and Canada as well as in sister cities, Steyr, Austria and Kettering, England. The band rehearses each Monday evening at the Kettering Middle School throughout the year. Summer performance schedules include community concerts and large public festivals. The program is for adults and young people who have a minimum amount of high school musical training. The organization is an excellent source for those who wish to gain concert band experience. Shelly Burden has a desire to introduce people of all ages to the techniques of making ceramic art on the potter’s wheel and with hand building. She maintains a personal studio and strives to continuously learn, teach and create new artwork. Shelly produces and sells commercial and commissioned pottery locally and internationally. While she primarily uses an electric kiln, Shelly enjoys all types of alternative firing methods which include Raku, barrel, saggar and pit firings. Her interest in clay began as a child in the late 1960s, when she made mud pies using dirt and leaves in her rural backyard. Today, she shares her love for clay at Rosewood Arts Centre as an instructor for Introduction to Ceramics: Wheel Throwing.

All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-inprogress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

RESIDENT STATUS

The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident and non-resident users. To receive resident rates when attending Drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering: • A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address • Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering: •

Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger): • School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under. The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU We strive for positive experiences and excellence in everything we do. All refunds will be made according to the following guidelines: • If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund. • If you were unable to attend a set of classes, we will try to transfer you to another section. Otherwise, we will offer a 50% refund of the class price. • Special consideration will be given for life altering situations. • Refund requests must be made within 30 days of a registered program’s end date (effective January 1, 2016). Refunds will be issued via the following method: If the original transaction was paid using cash, check or household credit, the refund will be issued via City check. If the original transaction was paid by credit or debit card, the refund will be issued back to the card used for payment. Refunds issued via City check will follow the Finance Department’s bill-paying schedule. There will be no cash refunds. This policy does not apply to facility rentals. See your rental contract for cancellation details. NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.
