The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is pleased to offer a signing interpreter for hearing-impaired patrons who want to take a class at Rosewood Arts Centre or the Kettering Recreation Complex. MEETING SPACE & ROOM RENTAL Rosewood Arts Centre provides a pleasant, creative and comfortable atmosphere for group or individual needs for meeting space. Meeting rooms include requested table and chair arrangements, as well as large slide or projector screens. All rooms are equipped with cloak and sink areas. Parking is free, convenient and safe. Applications for meeting space are accepted continuously for daily and quarterly rentals. If your organization or group has been searching for an affordable meeting place, call (937) 296-0294.
CLASS CANCELLATION Rosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.
OPEN STUDIOS Open studio sessions are designed to allow artists and craftspeople the opportunity to work on their own in a creative environment with the necessary equipment perhaps not available to them at home. The studios are open for independent work Monday through Saturday. Hours are determined by class schedule. Call (937) 296-0294. VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open studio fees to stay longer than 15 minutes. Children under five years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, should sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended. STUDENT POLICY: Students currently enrolled in classes will receive a student pass card. This card is used for studio time needed to develop skill and complete projects. Students staying over 30 minutes after the class period must sign in and use this pass card. OPEN STUDIO FEES: Pottery – Sculpture – Painting – Enameling – Glass – Dance Drop-in fee per visit: $4/resident; $8/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $30/resident; $60/non-resident. Supplies are not included in open studio fees. LOCKER RENTAL: Lockers are available for rental on a pre-pay six-month or yearly basis. Six-month: $20/resident; $25/non-resident. Yearly: $35/resident; $45/non-resident. POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $19 includes 25 pounds of clay and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants. Please call (937) 296-0294 with your name and phone number. DARKROOM: The darkroom is available for use by individuals during regular Rosewood Arts Centre hours, except when classes are scheduled. A notice is posted announcing class dates and times. Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes, and attend a Rosewood orientation and familiarization session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment. Darkroom fee per visit: $5/resident; $10/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $35/resident; $70/non-resident. Reminder: Discount cards must be processed by the individual holder. Discount cards are for individual use only and not to be shared among friends or family. 1

KETTERING ARTS COUNCIL The Kettering Arts Council is a volunteer advisory board that Kettering residents created to assist the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department with the development, awareness and promotion of the arts in Kettering. The Kettering Arts Council meets every third Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Rosewood Arts Centre. Rosewood Participants All artwork unclaimed after several weeks runs the danger of being lost, misplaced, broken or mistakenly taken by other students. Please check the art studio for your clay, sculpture and other clay pieces within two weeks of the end of class. Artwork unclaimed after 30 days will be discarded.
DANCE APPAREL Dance classes, such as ballet and tap, are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are safer than socks. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. Dance shoes are available at many local retailers and local dance apparel stores. Leotards and tights are optional as well. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Only the spring session includes a dance review. For information, call (937) 296-0294.

The Kettering Children’s Choir was founded in 1986, and now includes over 200 singers, ages 8 to 18, from 30 communities within nine Miami Valley counties. The Choraleers, Chorus, Chorale, and Concert Choir sing music of all periods and types, from Renaissance to contemporary, and rehearse weekly at Rosewood Arts Centre. The Cappella, a regional high school honors choir, is a college prep program in residence at Wright State University. The Concert Choir and the Cappella tour nationally and internationally. Age(s) 7 – 13 Come use your artistic skills and make colorful, dimensional projects! We will be using a variety of materials on each of our projects, ranging from colored pencils, markers and pastels to paint and food coloring. Each project will be new and exciting and teach you a little about simple color theory. We’ll learn about complimentary colors and explore what colors work well together and what colors don’t. Learn to draw expressions and basic body positions, explore movement, animals, comic strips and the art of caricature. Advanced Theatre Instruction
Preschool Clay
Age(s) 9 – 15 or 4th through 9th grades This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. Kettering Children’s Theatre Age(s) 10 – 15 The Kettering Children’s Theatre Production is a nonauditioned youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre. Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is welcomed. Registration deadline for the winter production is Saturday, December 15, 2012, with notification by letter sent after January 1, 2013. Registration forms must be dropped off at Rosewood Arts Centre. This series of 90-minute workshops, led by professional illustrators and writers, will teach you the basics of comic book creation. Silver Soldering Intensive Age(s) 16 + Silver soldering is one of the most important techniques for the metals’ student to master. This process-oriented class will take you step by step through the soldering process, from understanding the mechanics to the practical application of joining two pieces of metal. We will practice the soldering techniques on brass and copper of butt soldering, standing seams, sweat soldering, etc. After some practice, you can work in sterling silver to make a band ring, bezel, jump rings, pendant, pin and/or earrings, as time allows. Reduction Firing To participate in the reduction firings, potters may purchase multiples of a 1,000 cubic inch “firing package.” When at least 8 but no more than 18 “firing packages” have been purchased, and the pots have been glazed, a firing is scheduled. OPEN STUDIO FREE FRIDAYS! Open studios in pottery, glass, darkroom, dance and painting will be open without charge to Kettering residents each Friday during the winter quarter of 2013. DANCE APPAREL Dance classes, such as ballet and tap, are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are safer than socks. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. Dance shoes are available at many local retailers and local dance apparel stores. Leotards and tights are optional as well. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Only the spring session includes a dance review. Beginning Belly Dancing Age(s) 16 + Belly dancing, a feminine tradition, has an ancient history. It was started in the Middle East as a series of motions to strengthen the pelvic and abdominal muscles in preparation for childbirth. In ancient Egypt and Turkey, only the best dancers would gain the attention of the sultan. Our class will consist of basic belly dance folk steps and cabaret-style dance moves, along with floor exercises and the use of veils. Kettering Civic Band Age(s) 18 + Celebrating their 55th year, the Kettering Civic Band has performed throughout the region and Canada as well as in sister cities, Steyr, Austria and Kettering, England. The band rehearses each Monday evening at the Kettering Middle School throughout the year. Summer performance schedules include community concerts and large public festivals. The program is for adults and young people who have a minimum amount of high school musical training. The organization is an excellent source for those who wish to gain concert band experience. ADULT/TEEN WRITING Creative Writing for Publishing III Age(s) 16 + This seven-week course helps you edit, revise and fine-tune your plot and characters to make the story more enjoyable. The course takes a critical look at what each writer can do to improve his or her work. It assists in the final preparation and formatting of a Submission Packet (an author’s bio, a detailed outlining, character descriptions, and a sample chapter). It aids in the production of a full manuscript, so that it is ready to submit to a potential publisher. The course also explains the process of selling your writing skills, a typical publishing contract, the publication laws and how literary agents work. Attendees should have a completed Book Proposal prior to starting the course or a finished manuscript. WINTER 2013 FACULTY LIST Toni Adams has an Associate’s Degree in Visual Communications from Sinclair Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from the University of Dayton. She is also a practicing artist who has had multiple paintings in juried art shows. Dale Archer co-owns Gemini Dance Studio. Linda Ashley is an experienced competition and exhibition dancer. Nancy Lynn Boss has been teaching various dance styles for 29 years — 17 of those years have been at Rosewood Arts Centre. She has studied dance with Jorg Fastings from the Columbus Ballet Company and Ballet Arts in New York City. Dale Boydston studied Fine Art with an emphasis on Ceramic Arts at the College of the Dayton Art Institute and Sinclair Community College. He is currently devoting his time to studio ceramic design, art photography and teaching. David Brand has taught metal casting/construction for more than 25 years, continually honing his skills through personal research and participation in classes and workshops with widely known metal artists. He exhibits nationally in juried shows. Jane Brennan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from the University of Dayton. She has taught in a variety of settings and has experience in many art mediums. Rebekah Bucnis-Thompson holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Dayton and teaches at Stivers School for the Arts. She has been working in photography since 2003. Amanda Bush is the instructor for Conversational Italian. Teresa Connair earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wright State University. She has experience in film, theater and radio and television commercials. Her directing includes Oakwood Community Center youth summer theatre and Washington Township youth theatre as well as Rosewood Arts Centre. Greg Dearth graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He is a member of the Portrait Society of America and has been a guest lecturer and instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design and Atlanta’s Portfolio Center. His work has been included in many of the juried Society of Illustrators’ annual shows, Communication Arts, American Illustration and Print magazines. Sammie Sue Edmondson has studied dance since she was seven years old. She studied in New York City and at Sinclair Community College. Shannon Fent has been Kettering Children’s Theatre’s director for the past seven years and 14 productions. She has an Associate’s degree from Sinclair Community College in Theatre Production. Pearl Grefer is an experienced dance instructor who has won the “National Top Teacher Award.” 14
Gary Halsey attended the Art Students League of New York in Painting under D. Greene and Anatomy under R. B. Hale and has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati. He worked in his own business as a book cover illustrator and mural painter in New York City for over 20 years. Sara Jankowski is from Cleveland, Ohio. She studied fine arts and art therapy at Ohio University. She received her Masters Degree from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sara works as an art teacher and art therapist in the Cincinnati/Dayton area. Trish Jeffers-Zeh is a Certified PMC (Precious Metal Clay) and Senior Instructor of Silver Art Clay. She works as a freelance artist with a background in sculpture, metals, glass fusing, lapidary and mixed media. J. Austin Jennings has been teaching art in the Dayton area since 1994. Her acrylic paintings and collage pieces are shown and collected across the country and have earned many awards, including a featured spot in The Artist’s Magazine’s Year’s Best Art issue in December 2009. She is the recipient of the 2012 Pamela Houk Award for Excellence in Art Education in Southwest Ohio. Jennings is a member of Dayton Visual Arts Center, Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, and Arts & Culture Alliance, Knoxville, Tennessee. Georgia Johnson is a Third Degree Master of the Ohara School and a teacher in the Ohara School of Japanese Flower Arranging-Ikabana. She is a member of the Ikabana International Dayton Chapter and has taught Ikabana for 20 years. Breck Jordan has been an interpreter for the deaf for almost ten years. She is a 2001 graduate of the Manual Communication program at Sinclair Community College. Currently, she works full time interpreting for Kettering City Schools. David Keener taught in the public schools for 37 years, during which his vocal and instrumental groups frequently received district and state Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Superior ratings. Tom Kinarney is a former professional artist who has done freelance illustration for numerous companies, locally and throughout the country. He has taught art for the last ten years at Riverbend Art Center and at the Fairborn Art Association. H. David Kirchner has a degree in art from Cedarville College. He also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. David operates the H. David Studio/Gallery in downtown Dayton. He has worked in clay since 1984. Donna Kuszpa has studied wirewrapping with John Kleber in Columbus. She has taught wirewrapping since 1993 at Riverbend Art Centre. April Lemaster has been studying ceramics for over seven years. She has trained with David Kirchner, Vicki Cassidy and Lynn Zoll.

Tony Lupia is a published author and has been involved with the publishing industry for almost 25 years. His expertise covers a wide range of writing, including creative, business and technical. Victoria Manship has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Ohio University. She was an officer in the university’s Japanese Culture Club, which focused heavily on animÊ and manga. She has assisted with several child and youth programs in the region. Sara Mastbaum earned her Master of Arts in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Cincinnati, where she focused on Museum Education. She has served as an intern with the education departments of the Contemporary Arts Center and the Dayton Art Institute. Currently, she works as an elementary school substitute in the Centerville City School District and as a freelance writer. Sara was recently named a 2012-2013 Fulbright finalist in Creative and Performing Arts. Roland Muncy is a self-employed caricature artist. His work has been seen throughout the Dayton area. Sandra Picciano-Brand has maintained a studio in Dayton for over 25 years. Her work is in private collections and galleries nationally. She has exhibited at national level juried art shows and won numerous awards. She has studied at Penland, Arrowmont and Craft Summer Institutes. Loretta Puncer received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Commercial Design from the University of Dayton. She has been a practicing artist/painter for over 25 years.

Linda Rice has been an art instructor for over eight years. In addition to teaching in the Philippines, Chicago, Pasadena and Dayton, she has training in art education and art therapy. Nicole Rottmueller earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a concentration in Painting, from the University of Dayton. She is currently working on her Masters of Art Education. She was the Creative Arts Director at a summer camp and has taught many art workshops. Raymonde Rougier received her Bachelor of Music Education at Eastern Kentucky University and taught music in Kettering City Schools for 30 years. In 2008, she was inducted into the Kettering City Schools Hall of Fame. Pat Westby added beadmaking to her repertoire of art skills in 2001. She has taken classes at Miami University and participated in the International Society of Glass Beadmakers Conference. A member of the Miami Valley Lampwork Bead Artists, she has been invited to teach and demonstrate at Thompson Enamel and Fenton Art Glass Factory.
