rosewood arts centre Rosewood Arts Centre is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for the residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area by providing creative experiences through the arts. Rosewood presents over 400 classes annually for youth and adults, as well as gallery exhibitions, theater performances, artist studios and special events. A division of the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Rosewood is supported and programmed by the City of Kettering, with additional support provided by the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rosewood Hours

Rosewood is open extended hours on Saturdays and open on Sundays during the school year. Drop-in studio will be open for ceramics, dance, painting, drawing, glass, jewelry, theatre, dance and the darkroom. Sunday classes will also be offered; please check the activity listings for more information!

Dayton Metro Library at Rosewood Arts Centre Throughout Winter of 2019, the Wilmington-Stroop branch of the Dayton Metro Library will be hosting programs at Rosewood Arts Centre while their facility is under construction. These programs include storytime, home school, teen, and book club! Details can be found at www.daytonmetrolibrary.org.

Drawing FUNdamentals

Drawing, painting, clay, art history and 3-dimensional art are just some of the art mediums to be covered. This class is taught by a professional art teacher. All art materials are furnished.

An art class for kids on the Autism Spectrum, Art with Buddies is a special class for kids with ASD. Each student, with the aid of their own “buddy”(caretaker), will get individualized attention from an experienced art teacher.

Wheel Pottery for Teens Ages: 12+

A pottery class just for teens that focuses on developing skills with the potter’s wheel. Students learn and practice all of the basics from wedging clay, centering and creating basic forms on the wheel. Afterschool Dance

Ages: 5 – 10

Plan a fun play date with your favorite kiddo and explore the art of mosaic! In this family-friendly class, adults and kids will collaborate to create a colorful 10 inch x 10 inch mosaic on a wooden wall panel from glass, mirrors, beads, glass globs and much more! All materials are pre-cut and each adult/child team is provided with a mosaic tool to fine tune tesserae (pieces in a mosaic). YOUTH THEATRE Basic Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This class provides instruction in the basic theatre skills of pantomime, movement, voice and diction, improvisation, script work, audition techniques and performing a monologue. Kettering Children’s Theatre Ages: 9 – 15

The Kettering Children’s Theatre Production is a youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and/or Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre or by permission of the instructor. If you have previous theatre experience but have not taken either class at Rosewood you may perform a monologue at auditions. The monologue must be memorized. Monologues will be available in the Rosewood Arts Centre front office. All potential participants are encouraged to take at least one acting class or a summer camp. Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is strongly encouraged. A mandatory parent meeting is scheduled for January 14 from 5 to 6 p.m. Registration deadline for the fall production is January 14, 2019. Open auditions will be held on Saturday, January 12 at 11 a.m. Winter production dates are March 29, 30, 31 and April 5, 6 and 7.

Advanced Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. Jane Brennan holds a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Dayton. She has taught in a var iet y of settings and has experience in many ar t media. Jane has taught youth art classes at Rosewood Arts Centre for over 15 years including s e v e r a l extremely popular clay summer camps. She is the regular instructor for Home School Art and Spring Break Art Camp.

Yoga in the Gallery Ages: 16+

Join us at Rosewood Gallery for an open level yoga class with Robyn Moore, RYT 200. This class is of a gentler nature, often focusing on shoulders, hips and low back, with the breath being the center of the practice. Class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners. Reduction Firing

Get unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing, included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space per firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Introduction to Wheel Pottery Ages: 16+

This class focuses on the basics of creating forms on the potter’s wheel. Students explore making traditional tableware including bowls, cups and mugs with self-directed projects for more experienced students. Intermediate Wheel Pottery

Handle It

This class will focus on creating larger pots, refining shapes and challenging students to become better potters. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace while exploring more advanced pottery techniques. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. This beginning to intermediate level class focuses on the ever-elusive perfect handle. Whether you just need to practice the basics, or branch out and try some new tricks, this workshop will cover forming and attaching handles with a variety of techniques. Some wheel pottery experience preferred.

Clay Hand Building Ages: 16+

This is a beginning class for students with little to no hand building experience. Instruction is given for making tiles, vessels and sculptural forms, using clay slabs and coils. Kettering Civic Band has performed throughout the region and Canada as well as in sister cities, Steyr, Austria and Kettering, England. The band rehearses each Monday evening at the Kettering Middle School throughout the year. Summer performance schedules include community concerts and large public festivals. The program is for adults and young people who have a minimum amount of high school musical training. The organization is an excellent source for those who wish to gain concert band experience.

Paste Paper Making Ages: 16+

Students learn the possibilities of hand-made paste paper. Create several unique and beautiful pieces of paste paper that can be used for numerous other projects.

VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open

studio fees to stay longer than 30 minutes. Children under 5 years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-inprogress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card.

POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $20 includes 25 pounds of clay and

related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants.

DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes, and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

GLASS STUDIO: The glass studio is available to students who wish

to finish class work, have attended a class previously or have prior experience in cold or warm glass. Participants must be at least 16 years old and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Fees for kiln or torch usage are $5 respectively for up to 3 hours.

NEWS ARTLOCAL A new artwork is being created by Jes McMillan of the Mosaic Institute of Greater Dayton in Kettering’s Haverstick neighborhood in partnership with Cities of Service. ArtLocal is an initiative to collaborate with residents on unique, sitespecific public artworks which capture the ideas and values of its community.

SCHANTZ AVENUE BRIDGE Renowned artist Vicki Scuri was selected to design the artwork for the Schantz Avenue Bridge, scheduled for completion in 2019. Her work encompasses elements of the historic trolley line that ran along Dixie Highway and inspiration from the neighborhood of Southern Hills. RESIDENT STATUS

The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident and non-resident users. To receive resident rates when attending drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering: • A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address • Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering:

• Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger): • School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under. The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION

For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

We strive for positive experiences and excellence in everything we do. All refunds will be made according to the following guidelines: • If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund. • If you were unable to attend a set of classes, we will try to transfer you to another section. Otherwise, we will offer a 50% refund of the class price. • Special consideration will be given for life altering situations. • Refund requests must be made within 30 days of a registered program’s end date (effective January 1, 2016). Refunds will be issued via the following method: If the original transaction was paid using cash, check or household credit, the refund will be issued via City check. If the original transaction was paid by credit or debit card, the refund will be issued back to the card used for payment. Refunds issued via City check will follow the Finance Department’s bill-paying schedule. There will be no cash refunds. This policy does not apply to facility rentals. See your rental contract for cancelation details.

NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.
