rosewood arts centre Rosewood Arts Centre is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for the residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area by providing creative experiences through the arts. Rosewood presents over 400 classes annually for youth and adults, as well as gallery exhibitions, theatre performances, artist studios and special events. A division of the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Rosewood is supported and programmed by the City of Kettering, with additional support provided by the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rosewood is open extended hours on Saturdays and open on Sundays during the school year. Drop-in studio will be open for ceramics, dance, painting, drawing, glass, jewelry, theatre, dance and the darkroom. Sunday classes will also be offered; please check the activity listings for more information!

Yoga in the Gallery Ages: 16+

Join us at Rosewood Gallery for an open level yoga class with Robyn Moore, RYT 200. This class is of a gentler nature, often focusing on shoulders, hips and low back, with the breath being the center of the practice. Class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners. A Celebration of Japan Art and Culture

In honor of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Rosewood invites the community to celebrate the arts, culture and history of this country through a special series of programs all year long!

Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony Takashi Kawai

Join one of Rosewood’s most dedicated ceramic studio artists, Takashi Kawai, as he leads a Japanese tea ceremony. Participants will experience a full tea ceremony, from the process of preparing the custom equipment, to drinking the Matcha green tea, while learning about the history and tradition of Japan. Suffragette Artmaking and Film Screening March 28, Noon – 3 p.m. Rosewood Gallery Free and open to all ages Join us in a celebration of the 19th amendment as we create suffragette-inspired artwork and discuss the movement that brought women voting rights. Engage in a discussion with a special panel of guest speakers and enjoy a screening of chapters from the Ken Burns and Paul Barnes documentary Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Youth Painting

Children will learn about drawing, line, shape and value, while working on projects that encourage creativity. Subject matter varies. Each student will work at his/her own level of skill and receive individual attention.

Wheel Pottery for Teens Ages: 12+

A pottery class just for teens that focuses on developing skills with the potter’s wheel. Beginners learn basic centering and formbuilding. Parent & Child Mosaic Ages: 5 – 10

Plan a fun play date with your favorite kiddo and explore the art of mosaic! In this family-friendly class, adults and kids will collaborate to create a colorful 10 inch x 10 inch mosaic on a wooden wall panel from glass, mirrors, beads, glass globs and much more! All materials are pre-cut and each adult/child team is provided with a mosaic tool to fine tune tesserae (pieces in a mosaic). There will be a grouting demo and each student will go home with a bag of premixed grout and gloves to grout at home. All materials included. Dance classes are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are recommended, as well as comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. YOUTH MUSIC Group Piano Lessons Ages: 4 – 10

If you know 1,2,3,4,5, you are ready for Amy Wang’s group piano lessons! The class provides students an excellent introduction to the keyboard. The group activities foster teamwork, improve academic and physical skills, build self-esteem and motivate students to reach their goals. Advanced Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. Kettering Children’s Theatre Ages: 9 – 15

The Kettering Children’s Theatre Production is a youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and/or Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre or by permission of the instructor. If you have previous theatre experience but have not taken either class at Rosewood you may perform a monologue at auditions. The monologue must be memorized. Monologues will be available in the Rosewood Arts Centre front office. Students are required to commit to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is strongly encouraged. A mandatory parent meeting is scheduled for January 13, from 5 – 6 p.m. Registration deadline for the winter production is January 13, 2020. Introduction to Wheel Pottery Ages: 16+

This class focuses on the basics of creating forms on the potter’s wheel. Students explore making traditional tableware including bowls, cups and mugs with self-directed projects for more experienced students. Special surface decoration and glazing techniques are also covered to achieve unique results. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. Reduction Firing Get unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space needed in a single firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Intermediate Wheel Pottery Ages: 16+

Students will focus on creating larger pots, refining shapes and challenging students to become better potters. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace while exploring more advanced pottery techniques. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. This is a beginning class for students with little to no hand building experience. Instruction is given for making tiles, vessels and sculptural forms using clay slabs and coils. Handles & Spouting

Learn To Draw

Learn to make pouring, lidded and handled containers with the potter’s wheel.

Students learn the fundamentals of drawing through instructor technique and skill demonstrations and lots of practice. Students draw from still life motifs using graphite and charcoal. Beginners work from simple arrangements while experienced students work one more complex compositions and subject matter. Class materials are not provided. Supply list is attached to your receipt or is available in the Rosewood Arts Centre office.

Ceramic Jewelry Making Ages: 16+

Students explore various ways of making ceramic jewelry. Methods of decoration such as inlay, wax resist and under-glazes as well as proper jewelry glazing techniques are covered. Different applications of hardware will be used both before and after firing. This class is open to all skill levels.

Hand Built Pottery Ages: 16+

Enjoy creating interesting functional and non-functional pieces using a variety of clay hand building methods. Various decorative surface techniques will also be explored and incorporated into the projects. In this class, students learn the basics of making soap from scratch and get hands-on experience by making a 1.5 lb batch of soap to take home. Students will design their own fragrances for their batch of soap, using the provided essential and/or fragrance oils. Students will learn the history of the pysanky craft, the symbols commonly used and their meanings, and watch a thorough demonstration. Students learn how to apply wax to the eggshell and dye the eggs in stages, working from lightest dyes to darkest. When the entire process is complete a hanger is added to make an ornament.

Join acclaimed novelist, Allison M. Dickson for this three month writing mentorship program. It starts with a lecture on storytelling and students creating brand new stories in-class. Kettering Civic Band

Kettering Civic Band has performed throughout the region and Canada as well as in sister cities, Steyr, Austria and Kettering, England. The band rehearses each Monday evening at the Kettering Middle School throughout the year. Summer performance schedules include community concerts and large public festivals. The program is for adults and young people who have a minimum amount of high school musical training. The organization is an excellent source for those who wish to gain concert band experience. studio fees to stay longer than 30 minutes. Children under 5 years old are not permitted in open studio. All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio

classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants.

DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

GLASS STUDIO: The glass studio is available to students who wish

to finish class work, have attended a class previously or have prior experience in cold or warm glass. Participants must be at least 16 years old and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Fees for kiln or torch usage are $5 respectively for up to 3 hours.

NEWS SCHANTZ AVENUE BRIDGE Artist Vicki Scuri (Lake Forest Park, WA) designed a public artwork component for the Schantz Avenue Bridge based on the history of the historic trolley line that ran along Dixie Highway and inspiration from the Southern Hills neighborhood. Scuri’s process integrates functionality with artistic vision, and the integration of history, design and community feedback to create a permanent, beautiful landmark for Kettering. A dedication ceremony will take place in spring 2020.

RIDGEWAY ROAD BRIDGE Scheduled to be replaced in 2021, the Ridgeway Road Bridge is a beloved destination and thoroughfare for Kettering residents. Cliff Garten Studio (Venice, CA) worked closely with the engineer team and community residents to integrate aesthetic enhancements to the new bridge, including artwork reflective of the surrounding landscape and character of the community.

REGIONAL ART COLLECTION AT THE KETTERING GOVERNMENT CENTER Featuring several of the most accomplished visual artists of Kettering and the Miami Valley, the Regional Art Collection represents photographs, paintings and prints, from Kettering’s own parks to nearby Clifton Gorge. The Regional Art Collection is accessible to the public by special appointment and scheduled tours. RESIDENT STATUS

The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident and non-resident users. To receive resident rates when attending drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering: • A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address.

• Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering:

• Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger):

• School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under. The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION

For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

We strive for positive experiences and excellence in everything we do. All refunds will be made according to the following guidelines: • If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund. • If you were unable to attend a set of classes, we will try to transfer you to another section. Otherwise, we will offer a 50% refund of the class price. • Special consideration will be given for life altering situations. • Refund requests must be made within 30 days of a registered program’s end date. Refunds will be issued via the following method: If the original transaction was paid using cash, check or household credit, the refund will be issued via City check. If the original transaction was paid by credit or debit card, the refund will be issued back to the card used for payment. There will be no cash refunds. This policy does not apply to facility rentals. See your rental contract for cancellation details.

NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS

Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.

We invite participation by people with disabilities, alongside people without disabilities, in our programs, sites and facilities. The sooner we know about your needs and how we can support you in our programs, the more likely participation will not be delayed. However, if delays in communication occur, we will delay the start of program participation. Please register early and submit this request form early.
