50years of turning hope into help

1974 On Easter Sunday, Kip Tiernan and four other volunteers open Rosie’s Place in an abandoned storefront on Columbus Avenue in Boston’s South End—establishing the first women-only shelter in the United States.

1977

Rosie’s Place moves to a nearby fivestory building at 1662 Washington Street.

1986

After a devastating fire at 1662 Washington Street, Rosie’s Place finds its current home at 889 Harrison Avenue, expanding meal service, Advocacy programming and the Overnight Shelter.

1998 The Food Pantry, which shares space with the Dining Room, continues to grow, and the organization initiates plans to renovate space in the Day Shelter.

2004 The Homelessness Prevention Initiative launches, later transforming into what is now the Stabilization Program.

2010

Rosie’s Place acquires the building next door to its main site and opens the Women’s Education Center, offering free ESOL, literacy and computer classes to hundreds of women each year.

2015

Rosie’s Place adds the Legal Program and expands its Outreach Program to serve more guests in the community.

2020 Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the doors of Rosie’s Place remain open, with services continuing uninterrupted—expanding and evolving to meet the community’s increased needs. The Advocacy Helpline is established to help guests who cannot come in person, and the Food Pantry doubles its impact.

2021 The Food Pantry expands even further, tripling pre-pandemic capacity to address rising food insecurity, serving 350 women each day. Renovations increase Day Shelter services, allowing for more guests to be served.

Rosie’s Place is pleased to have the following individuals serving on its Board of Directors and Leadership Council for FY 2025.

Dear Friends,

It is with deep gratitude that we share with you our Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2024 (July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024), detailing all that your support enabled us to provide to the thousands of women who turned to us for help.

This year, with appreciation and pride, we mark 50 years of turning hope into help for poor and homeless women. When Kip Tiernan founded Rosie’s Place in 1974, as the very first shelter for women in the country, she didn’t set out to make history. She set out to make a difference. And thanks to friends like you, we do just that every day.

Because at the heart of our community is an extraordinary hope.

An indefatigable hope that asks what more can we do? A relentless hope that seeks change over complacency and justice over apathy. Because it is shared by so many friends like you, it is a hope so big that it is transformative.

We are the place women go to when they have nowhere else to turn. A place where lives are changed every day. And today, our help has never been needed more.

One needs only to look to our data to see that over the past five years, every single program and service at Rosie’s Place has grown—and in many instances, doubled or tripled in volume. You will see these increasing and critical needs and numbers reflected in these pages.

Rosie’s Place is committed to doing more for the community that needs us more.

We have launched a strategic plan that, over the next four years, will grow all of our programming by 25%. This means more meals, more eviction prevention work, more housing search, more education, more job search, more everything. We will be open from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, helping thousands more women every year. And we’re not only growing, but we are expanding, with an innovative Behavioral Health Program that will allow us to better serve those who are often the hardest to reach—guests struggling with mental illness and addiction.

When a woman comes to us, alone and afraid, she has exhausted every option she has before she walks through our doors. She often expects that we will be another no in a long string of nos she’s used to hearing. But when she comes to Rosie’s Place, she hears yes. Yes, we care about you. Yes, we will work to find a solution. Yes, we will help.

Thank you for saying yes to Rosie’s Place. For 50 years, we have given our whole hearts to this work. And you have given us yours.

Together, we turn hope into help, and we change lives.

With appreciation,

san Ctuary

Women who have limited access or instability surrounding their basic needs for food, shelter and safety are rarely in a position to address their social and emotional health or to develop long-term plans around housing and employment. This is why Rosie’s Place is so much more than a shelter. We are a sanctuary.

Homeless guests know they can come to Rosie’s Place to address urgent needs. Our Day Shelter gave respite and community to more than 12,000 women over the course of the year. We provided 2,775 showers, 883 loads of laundry, 5,903 phone and computer appointments and 3,024 toiletry kits.

In our Overnight Shelter, we provided welcoming and supportive shelter stays for 178 guests, and we helped 12 guests secure transitional or permanent housing. The Overnight Shelter is open 365 days a year to provide women a warm, safe bed for 28 days.

* Boston Indicators, 2024

Boston has the second highest rate of homelessness among major cities in the nation.*
In our early years, Rosie’s Place provided 10 beds to homeless women for week-long stays.
Today, our Overnight Shelter, with a well-equipped kitchen, dining area, laundry room and community space accommodates 20 women at a time for 28-day stays. With this extended stay and the sanctuary and security it affords our guests, they are able to connect with our various expert services and supports in order to plan their next steps.
34% of Massachusetts households—1.9 million people—are considered food insecure, with more than 60% having to choose between buying food and paying for heat and electricity, transportation or rent.*

Our Dining Room is open 365 days a year, with breakfast, lunch and dinner offered on-site or to-go. Responding to the hunger crisis in our community, we served 152,000 healthy, hearty meals—a stunning 47% increase over last year. On average, we served more than 400 meals each day.

The Food Pantry hosted more than 74,000 visits, distributing critical groceries, household essentials and hygiene products to a total of 8,300 women—22% more women than last year.

In our Wellness Center, guests have free access to health care providers every weekday through our partnerships with Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program and Regis College. Last year alone, the Wellness Center accommodated 2,252 visits, delivering vital and compassionate medical care to poor and homeless women in a familiar and trusted setting.

In the past year, our Women’s Recovery Support Navigator conducted 900 visits with 100 women, working one-on-one to assist guests with recovery and care coordination and promoting harm reduction among our guests with substance use disorders.

* Greater Boston Food Bank, May 2024

Food brings people together. This has always been true at Rosie’s Place. From our early days serving coffee and sandwiches in 1974 to present day as we serve more than 150,000 healthy, hearty and culturally diverse meals annually, our Dining Room is the heart and hub of Rosie’s Place.

It’s where our community comes together every day to prepare and enjoy nourishing meals and where we host birthday and holiday celebrations, musical performances and events. Here our guests find sustenance, connection and a sense of belonging.

support

Rosie’s Place offers multiple ways to help women achieve stability in their lives, from addressing rent and utility hardships to finding housing or to navigating our complicated legal system. Recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to poverty and homelessness, we support every woman who needs us for as long as she needs us. Our help is always given with kindness and without conditions.

Our team of multilingual Advocates completed more than 30,000 visits with guests, both on-site and through our Advocacy Helpline, assisting them with rent and utility arrearages, as well as accessing shelter, transportation needs or plans to achieve stable living situations.

With our help, 2,014 women and their children remained housed through our eviction prevention services, an increase of 24% from the previous year.

Women have always turned to Rosie’s Place for emergency help and for support with more complex issues. Our Advocacy Program was established as a onestop-shop for women to address a wide-range of issues.

The Housing Stabilization home-visiting program supported 58 newly-housed women and women at risk of eviction through regular home visits and consistent contact with property owners and management companies, keeping 100% of these guests housed and healthy. Our team assisted with support services such as funding for back rent and utilities, furniture, referrals to behavioral health programs and housing court assistance.

Through our Legal Program, we provided in-person and remote legal services in areas of family law, immigration, employment and housing. We worked in partnership with Greater Boston Legal Services and Rian Immigrant Center to assist 1,100 guests with a host of legal challenges.

Over the years, we’ve grown to now be a team of multilingual Advocates offering compassion, support and solutions to women in person and over the phone every day. We held almost 30,0000 remote and in-person visits with guests in the past year.

Justina

Most women find their way to Rosie’s Place. For Justina, her life literally began here. Twentyfive years ago, her mother Tara was homeless and pregnant. Her family had turned their backs on her. With no network of support, and with nowhere else to go, Tara came to Rosie’s Place. Staying in our Overnight Shelter, she worked around the clock to forge a path toward stability for the little girl who was coming.

When Justina arrived, mother and daughter found temporary housing. But Rosie’s Place was still the home they returned to—for meals in our Dining Room, groceries from our Food Pantry and expert support from our Advocates. But most of all, for the love and support they found with us.

Over the years, the family grew and outgrew their living situation. After helping Tara to find an apartment of her own, we also covered her move-in costs and provided furniture and household essentials. The family put down roots, staying in that apartment for more than 15 years. Today, Justina is taking college classes and working with her mother at a nonprofit that enables her to help families struggling just as hers once did. Pregnant with her first child, she’s also about to become a mother herself. Tara and Justina have so much to be proud of and so much to look forward to.

Scan the QR code below to watch Justina tell her story as she returns to Rosie’s Place for a visit.

opportun Ity

For too many of our guests, education, employment and civic engagement opportunities are out of reach due to cost, language or technology barriers or simple access. We are committed to providing our guests with these critical steppingstones.

In our Women’s Education Center, we enrolled 305 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students and held a total of 607 on-site and virtual classes. Our students also learned in computer labs, through teaching phone calls and by using app-based educational software through their phones.

The Employment Specialist worked with 304 women. Twenty-five guests were placed in new jobs, and 26 guests entered and graduated from job training programs.

Our Public Policy team engaged guests in civic action through monthly Public Policy Council meetings. We supported them in preparing and submitting testimony to state legislators, covering topics such as the MA Rental Voucher Program, rent stabilization, the Affordable Homes Act and the state budget.

Our Women’s Education Program began when we saw that a great number of our guests were immigrants facing a language barrier. With a team of volunteer teachers, we began offering free English classes in our Dining Room in between meal seatings. As our guests’ needs grew, so did our program.

Today, our Women’s Education Center houses three floors of classrooms where we offer students free ESOL, technology and literacy classes. We also provide a Computer Lab where women can work on their job searches with our Employment Specialist. Further, we offer Zoom classes and other remote learning opportunities. Last year alone, we provided on-site and remote instruction to 305 students.

Kaceann

A dynamic and driven woman, Kaceann moved from Jamaica to New York City in search of a better life. For a while that’s exactly what she found, until her plans were derailed when the man she fell in love with abused her. She had to get out. With little more than the clothes on her back, she escaped to Boston. With hundreds of miles between her and her abuser, Kaceann was finally free. But this safety came at a high cost. She was now without a home, and without hope, a stranger in a new city with nowhere to turn— until she found Rosie’s Place, and she was truly able to start over again.

Kaceann stayed in our Overnight Shelter and found the support she needed. Our Employment Specialist helped her to apply for and secure a job as a home health aide. We extended her stay in our shelter while our Housing Specialist helped her find stable housing. When she moved into a nearby apartment, Rosie’s Place assisted with move-in costs, furniture and household essentials. Soon after, Kaceann worked once again with our Employment Specialist, who helped her to enroll in a course to become a certified phlebotomy technician.

Now, Kaceann’s days are spent working as a home health aide, and her nights are filled with GED and phlebotomy classes. She regularly visits our Dining Room for lunch in between work and classes and checks in with her “Rosie’s Place family.”

Scan the QR code below to watch a video of Kaceann sharing her story in her own words.

Rosie’s Place strives to be as accurate as possible in listing our supporters. We appreciate your help in correcting any errors or omissions.

Founded by Kip Tiernan in 1974, Rosie’s Place is the first emergency shelter for women in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women to maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives.

“Never forget that charity is scraps from the table and justice is a seat at the table. Charity is giving to others what belongs to you. Justice is giving others what belongs to them.”

At Rosie’s Place, we believe diversity, equity and inclusion are core components of justice. We commit to acting on a daily basis to dismantle injustice to ensure that opportunities and equitable outcomes are available to all members of our community regardless of individual characteristics including race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, age, sexual orientation or perceived ability.
