8 DAYS TO REMEMBER
Simone Didrichsen Knudsen, participant
The picture below was taken at one of the very first Roskilde Festivals. Back then 10.000 guests listened to music from two stages. Today, more than 130,000 people are gathered here. Throughout our lifetime of more than 40 years we have been a non-profit organisation run by volunteers. Then and now we are a festival with strong values and sincere dedication to inspire and move ourselves, our guests and the world around us. In total DKK 196,972,788 (€ 26.4 million) have been donated to organisations and projects all over the world.

This year we welcome you to the 44th edition of Roskilde Festival. In this guide we invite you to read more about this year’s activities and the people behind them. They themselves, however, can’t do anything without you. By spending the next days with us you will make this another festival to remember.
“The feeling of absolute freedom for 8 days straight, the wonderful music experience and the awesome food.”

NEWS AT ROSKILDE 2014 NEW STAGES
This year you will get to experience two brand new stages, Avalon and Rising. You will find Avalon where Cosmopol used to be. The tent, however, is designed differently allowing people outside the tent to watch performances and there will also be platforms inside the tent. With Avalon our intention was to create a stage that is able to deal with different music genres and audience sizes. Rising brings Roskilde Festival’s involvement with upcoming bands back to its roots. In the early 00’s the stage dedicated to Nordic newcomers was also situated in the camping area. With the new stage we also want to bring Roskilde Rising, our all-year project aimed at helping new bands, into focus.
HUMAN RIGHTS TATTOO
HUMAN RIGHTS UNDER YOUR SKIN
Yet another project this year is based on the most translated document in the world: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which can be read in more than 300 languages and dialects from Abkhaz to Zulu. Currently it is being translated to yet another language: body language. Visual art collective Tilburg CowBoys and Festival Mundial travel the world tattooing all 6,773 letters of the declaration on human skin letter by letter, person by person. This summer, you and/or your friends can literally be a part of human rights activism. human rights tattoo south of pavilion thursday 3 july friday 4 july-sunday 6 july

Every year, the grandstand wall by Orange Stage is decorated by an internationally renowned artist, who is given the challenge of creating a unique piece of art relating to Roskilde Festival. This year we welcome the anonymous street art celebrity Huskmitnavn who will paint 100 meters of Naked Run in front of Orange Stage. This will be his largest hand painted piece of art ever.

FREE FESTIVAL NEWSPAPER – EVERY DAY
Orange Press is Roskilde Festival’s very own daily paper. Every day from Monday to Sunday we serve the best stories about camps, arts, food and music – as well as fresh concert reviews courtesy of Soundvenue. Let us know if you have a good story. If you tweet using #OrangePress we will see it. You can also email us at orangepress@ roskilde-festival.dk. The paper will be available from around 10:00 AM at different places around the festival site where you get your breakfast. It is completely free, written in Danish and yours to keep – but please share the paper with your friends. The more the merrier.
OUR VERY OWN RADIO STATION
Roskilde Festival Radio is the festival’s very own radio station broadcasting live every day between 11:00-16:00. The broadcasts keep you updated on all the festival activities you don’t want to miss and prepare you for the concerts by playing music by this year’s acts. You can spot a reporter by their orange football jerseys. Go talk to him or her. You are also very welcome to share your stories, input (or just hang out) in our Radio Lounge in Dream City. Add ”Festivalradioen” on Snapchat and send us a snapsound. Roskilde Festival Radio can be downloaded as an app or streamed directly at roskilde-festival.dk.
RECHO AT ROSKILDE
Fill Roskilde with sound using Recho – an app based on one simple dogma: the sounds you record stay where they are recorded. You and others can hear them by standing in the exact same location. Record something great or far out. Leave conversations, sounds or concert rechoes for audiences in the future. Download Recho in App Store. And remember to use the tag #RF14 on all your rechoes.
THE APPetizer
This app will guide you through the tremendous array of available food stalls, food events and other good stuff to satisfy your hunger. Read more about it on page 107.
THE GUIDE
We hope this guide has become your new best friend by now. To deliver a music schedule that is as updated as possible we have printed it separately, so in fact the guide comprises two publications. Should you lose either of them you can buy a new pair (DKK 20) in the Merchandise stalls, which you find all over the festival. They are clearly marked on the map in the back of this guide.

and create your own schedule. These are just a few of the possibilities that the new Roskilde Festival App offers. Of course you will also be able to check out the festival map, find practical information and read about all the bands. As a brand new feature our 2014 app will also give you information about cool events and areas on the festival based on your location. And you can even win an ice-cold reward. ”I was 16 and my schoolteacher brought me to the festival. At that time only a small crowd of people where participating in building the festival.
”At first I became a volunteer to be with my friends at the festival, but when I became a year round volunteer one and a half years ago it was for other reasons.
I keep learning a lot from being a part of this big organization. Being a volunteer has taught me to be very organised and to make big decisions, fast. My ‘real’ job is to give permissions to cultural events in Copenhagen, and one of the reasons I got the job was all the things I’ve learned from being a volunteer at Roskilde Festival. Besides that it means a lot to me that Roskilde Festival donates all its profits to charity.”
I develop myself as a person and get new professional skills and improve the ones I had in the first place. I like being a part of a big community where it feels like we are all instrumental in making the festival happen. And last but not least, Roskilde Festival is a strong brand and you get great recognition when you talk to people and tell them that you do volunteer work for this big and in many ways unorthodox organisation.”

”Loving music and playing music myself I have of course always been drawn to Roskilde Festival. In 2004 I applied for a volunteerjob constructing Orange Stage. I was amazed with how important it was to have fun whilst working and the emphasis on socialising – even though at first I was a bit hesitant of being hugged by huge guys who haven’t seen showers for some days.
”At 18 I became a volunteer at the camping area and then the year after I started at Mummbai. I am a volunteer because I like the opportunity to split your time as a guest with time learning new things about yourself and the many tasks you find doing in the food tent. Additionally, I find it nice to work in an entirely different area to what I find myself doing when studying.
The following year I fathered a son and couldn’t go. And found myself missing it a lot. Now my wife and our three children come and join me after the stage has been constructed, which makes it easier to get even more involved.”
Once you start getting to know the other regular volunteers it feels like coming home to a second family year after year. On top of that, I think it is nice to have the chance to go to a more quiet and clean area once the festival is rolling, just to get a little break.”
OUR VOLUNTEERS
Approximately 31,000 people work as volunteers for Roskilde Festival or one of more than 200 clubs, unions and organisations that work with trade and services during the festival. — The gender distribution is 50/50. — The average age is 30. — The volunteers have on average worked as volunteers for 5.9 years.
— Volunteers were part of the reason why Roskilde Festival’s traders and service unions earned 19.2 million DKK in 2013. — The volunteers’ contribution was part of why Roskilde Festival Charity Society could allocate a profit of 6.7 million DKK for charity and cultural purposes after the festival in 2013.

For more than 40 years, Roskilde Festival has supported a number of sustainable and social initiatives at the festival as well as abroad. That is what we call Roskilde Social Responsibility. Every year as a part of this, Roskilde Festival puts emphasis on a particular topic that we wish to address and influence together with audience and stakeholders. We call it CHANGE. In 2014 and 2015 CHANGE brings attention to youth unemployment and solidarity. For young people unemployment raises questions of solidarity, identity and the definition of meaningful life. all events take place in dream city

Denmark is the European country where youth unemployment has increased the fastest, but youth unemployment is a problem throughout Europe: more than 5.7 million people under the age of 25 are without jobs. In Spain the number is almost as high as 60% – the highest ever. This year, in collaboration with our festivalgoers we want to make a change by means of action. This is why we also support projects and organisations that work with this very problem.
THE ICONIC WOMEN OF PUSSY RIOT AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL 2014
The feminist activist group Pussy Riot was on everyone’s lips after several of its members were imprisoned following a punk happening in Moscow’s largest church. Today the two former members Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina have been released and continue their worldwide campaign for freedom of speech, prison reforms and human rights. They will give a speech at Gloria – check the band schedule for details.

THE T-SHIRT CREATED BY THE AUDIENCE
In the fall we invited Roskilde-fans to submit designs for the official festival T-shirt. About 500 designs came from all over Europe. Taking a symbol from the world of music an orange guitar pick with ROSKILDE 14 inside is the basic element in the winning design in this year’s T-shirt design contest. The colour is from our logo and famous main stage, Orange Stage, and the design is done by Bjørn Ivar Liland from Oslo. You find the design on both this year’s official T-shirt, hoodie and kids collection.

ART ZONE

ART EXPLORE THE
ZONE It’s a well-known fact that the essence of Roskilde Festival is more than the music – it’s a community, a city and a state of mind and loads of other things, unique for each participant. In Art Zone we’ve singled out a few terms, which are central for our understanding of Roskilde Festival, and we’ve let these terms create a thematic foundation on which Art Zone is built.
Transformation, participation and repetition are three of the terms which have been central in trying to make all the different art forms weave into each other and create a common foundation on which the artists build their individual works of art. Another central issue, which should be pointed out, is that the experience of art at Roskilde Festival is different than the typical experience of art at a museum. At Roskilde Festival we want to break down the distance between art and you, the viewer. There is no ‘one right way’ to engage in Art Zone. You can participate. You can engage and be challenged on a both artistic and social level. You sit back and enjoy the visual and auditory impressions. Or you can just kick back and relax. Art Zone is an oasis you can enjoy if the need for a break from the music arises or an area you actively seek out when the performance program, visual artist or artist talks are running. In Art Zone we present a wide range of international and Danish artists who have created works of art especially for Roskilde Festival.
19 There are great stories behind every performance on the festival – from bands born in extraordinary circumstances to artists working with exotic thoughts and sounds. This year, Roskilde Festival teams up with journalism innovators Zetland to present the best of these stories live on stage.
INSA
INSAUK
At Roskilde Festival INSA will create one of his recognizable gif-fities; a combination of a piece of graffiti art and gif-animation. Onsite the final picture of the gif will be visible, but by downloading an app especially developed for his piece at Roskilde Festival you are able to view the GIF work in real life. For the first time ever people will be able to see the moving animated painting in front of the actual painted wall via this mobile app. Roskilde Festival is the first time this app will be available to the public and will then go on to be used in future gif-pieces by INSA. Check out gif-iti.tumblr.com to see it move.
ABOUT ZETLAND
Zetland is the brainchild of four young journalists and has since 2012 established itself as a leading innovator in Danish media. Besides publishing prize-winning longform stories in what has been called a small revolution for Danish journalism, Zetland combines journalism with stage shows in a series of “livemagazines” where true stories are presented in words, film, music and total surprise. The spirited events are always sold out, most recently at The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen.
Every day festival guests can be entertained and informed by artist events at a pop-up stage in the Art Zone. Expect to be invited to participate and prepare to learn the answers to a handful of questions you might have. zetland thursday 3 july, friday 4 july, saturday 5 july and sunday 6 july

PERFORMANCE SENSE LABORATORY INT
At Roskilde Festival we want to break down the distance between art and you, the viewer. Thus, there is no ‘one right way’ to engage in Art Zone.
The performance programme of Roskilde Festival 2014 focuses on activating the senses through interactive and engaging performances. Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen (DK), Savage Amusement (AUS/DE), Sisters Hope (DK) and Katalin Halasz (UK) create intimate universes that support a shared ‘composition’. The performers examine the nature of sensibility and activate it through their different universes. Lighting artists from Ungt Lys create the light staging of Performance Sense Laboratory.

THE MAZES OF
MASER
23 more visible. Everything is merging and changing and graffiti is changing as well as a result – all for the better, I think.” Maser has been chosen as the lead artist for Art Zone at Roskilde festival 2014 and the whole area is dominated by his expression and vision. The sheer size and scale of such a project could seem daunting, but Maser has confidence in his methods.
INTERACTION IS KEY
“In essence it needs to be sort of a big outdoor playground for people, otherwise it’s just a piece in a field.” The Dublin born street artist Maser is no stranger to Roskilde Festival – he has visited several times working with the graffiti team decorating the festival site. Maser has done graffiti since he was 14, beginning with simple tags and evolving his distinctly abstract graphical style from there. This development has been supported by his schooling as a graphic designer – a course which focused especially on typography and lettering as an artistic form of expression. This focus on style as well as the nature of graffiti as part of the public space is a great source of inspiration for Maser: “Working as an artist in graffiti for so long I have become very aware of how people interact with the work. Making the viewer become part of the art and interact with it has almost become a narrative in my work now. I create mazes, which narrate the viewer through the artwork so the idea of community and people’s interaction with the work inspires me. Social media is a big part of it – how people photograph the work and post and re-post it on Twitter or Instagram excites me. Social media closes the world down and influences become
He has devised what he calls his “formula”: a step-by-step method, which produces different results for each project because of the differences in landscape and audience. The piece is divided into parts, which are made by a team of people before the festival and then combined at the festival site. This means that spray paint has been replaced with bucket paint to make the job easier and create the graphic look. To Maser, this process enforces the sense of community he wishes his art to be at the focal point of: “Interaction is essential. If you don’t have that the piece doesn’t come alive. I designed a maze, which is sort of inverted on itself – there are walls but there’s space to walk through each one. It’s an abstract landscape that people can treat maybe as a meeting point. In essence it needs to be sort of a big outdoor playground for people, otherwise it’s just a piece in a field.” Ultimately, Maser perceives his work for Roskilde as yet another step in an ongoing evolution. And he’s relying on the audience of Roskilde Festival to help him take that step: “My goal is not a photograph – it’s 1-2 minutes of video of people interacting with the piece. This is not my ultimate piece – I’ll be looking at this video of people and getting ideas which will develop into something else. I don’t know what the end goal is, but I’m having fun with it and I want other people to have fun too. In the end, everything is a journey – you just have to enjoy it.”

LILIBETH IS YOUR
MIRROR Having done video art for several years, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen discovered the power of performance art in 2006. The feedback she received when performing in front of a live audience intrigued her so much it made her change her approach to artistic expression: “I have explored performance in many ways. To begin with I used rather confrontational texts written as songs, which I performed while taking on a variety of roles and identities. The departure point of my art is the creation of a mirror in which the audience may reflect their own stories.” For her performances in the Art Zone at this year’s Roskilde Festival Lilibeth brings a piece of work in which the concept of mirroring is made concrete: “It’s a set of mirror-suits worn by a variety of bodies – some are dancers, some are not. They will be placed in a room and the audience will be able to interact with them or mirror themselves in them. The suits will be supplemented by music as well as a new piece of performance made by myself.” Although her work depends on audience input, Lilibeth is excited to see her art evolve as a function of its surroundings. To her, Roskilde Festival is a perfect opportunity for this to happen: “Roskilde Festival is an inspiration musically but also through the way people act there. I believe I create something that has a wide appeal and which is perfect for Roskilde. People are more open than normal here. My art departs from interaction with the audience and I hope this will provoke some thoughts. It all depends on those who activate it.”

ART In Art Zone the lights are staged as a binding effect between the different art works, and creates a glowing universe at the festival. By the term ‘lights’ we don’t just think of lamps vibrating in different colours. Lights are also projections on surfaces and installations that are lit up. The lights in Art Zone have multiple functions. Most importantly they’re individual works of art, but they also serve a practical purpose; to light up the festival ground. This double function is central to our work with lighting artists. We want to create unique and fascinating art works that should surprise and amaze you. We have found three different groups who create six individual lighting projects. The Icelandic based architect and artist Marcos Zotes will make one of the huge structures in Art

Zone come to life, by creating spectacular live 3D-projections. He will project on a 12 meters high Space Invader-esque structure. The lighting artists from Hackstage create the light setting across the many different art projects. When the darkness closes in on Art Zone Hackstage ensures that the visual identity and architecture etc. takes on a new appearance suitable for the nights at Roskilde Festival. A collaboration between Danish lighting artists called UngtLys, has developed a series of individual projects, which the audience can explore and literally walk into. UngtLys creates beautiful illuminating art works inside two 12 metre tall towers, in a ‘secret’ room sealed from the chaos of the festival. Last but not least, in conjunction with the different performance artists they have created an exceptional lighting scenography as a unique project for the Performance Sense Laboratory in Art Zone.

CITIES OF ROSKILDE
PHOTO: KHANH GIA NGUYEN
Each and every year 130.000 inhabitants settle onto 2.500.000 m2 – which is no more than the space occupied by an ordinary Danish town of 3.000 family houses. For eight days this makes Roskilde Festival the 4th most populous city in Denmark, albeit a temporary one. A city many times more densely populated than mega-cities like Mumbai, New York or Shanghai.
Just as it is the case with the official music and arts programme, Roskilde Festival aims not only to entertain but also to question whether we can find more creative, responsible and social ways to live together, not only during the festival, but also in our daily life. The thematic cities invite you to an alternative city experience where the programme of collective activities spans from the recreational and entertaining to the co-creative, critical and challenging. Roskilde Festival, which you by now may call your city or even your home away from home, has many similarities with the cities you live in. You might choose which area to live in from the theme and programme it offers, from the neighbors you find there – or even from its location. Maybe you just liked the view or decided that this was all the space you and your friends needed? No matter how you choose all cities are structured to accomodate the needs of eight days of camp life.
31 Since the festival only exists for eight days each year, it is possible for it to be a playground for urban experiments and solutions. Digital, environmental and architectural prototypes are tested and Roskilde Festival becomes a laboratory of tomorrow’s solutions for many cities. In a way you are not only a citizen of this new city of yours. You are also an explorer.
IN 2014, MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, YOU ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE
“roskilde festival can in many ways be seen as a laboratory for future urban development”.
There are countless activities to participate in throughout the Cities. Traditional wellness is combined with yoga and calisthenics in Relax City. Football is not only for professionals in Game City, a town council has been established in Dream City to make the voices of the inhabitants heard and in Street City twerking is the theme for a workshop. Miley Cyrus is of course welcome to join!
ROSKILDE FESTIVAL and DAC
Roskilde Festival and the Danish Architecture Centre are experimenting with city planning and temporary architecture at Roskilde Festival. This year young designers and architects will investigate how the experience and solutions from the festival cities can be exported as a co-created installation to the city of Copenhagen and at the Danish Architecture Center in a collaborative programme in the fall of 2014.

CITIES
Kent Martinussen, Managing director, Danish Architecture Centre
STREET CITY Sports, art and music. They all meld together in Street City – a unique combination of performance, competitions and workshops.
At the heart of Street City is a stage booked and designed in cooperation with Red Bull Studios Live, taking the Street City music platform to the next level in terms of sound, lights and visuals. The new stage built by Red Bull Studios Live will thunder away during the first days of the festival: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Each day will have its own theme and genres gathered under one common denominator: Urban Orange Feeling.
International stars like Rune Glifberg, Nicky Guerro, CJ Wellsmore, Eduard Zunda, Adrian Malmberg and Ole André Kristiansen artistically demonstrate their prowess in skateboarding, BMX and rollerblading and if you should feel inspired by this, it possible to borrow skateboards and inliners to test the park in the various skate workshops. It may sound like a turbocharged summer trip to the Alps or Aspen. But there is even yet more on the programme. Graffiti, DJs and dancing take centre stage during the day and early in the evening. And just like anywhere else at the festival you can’t have a party without an enthusiastic crowd. Among other things, it is the goal to make all of Street City shake its booty, when the festival hosts the very first Twerkshop in Danish history.

DREAM CITY
DREAM CITY
PHOTO: OLE HAUG
This urban experiment situated in Agora H is the only place at Roskilde Festival where you’re allowed to use power tools and lawn movers. Dream City is unique that way and actually in many other ways. The inhabitants (known as the Dreamers) have had a 100 day headstart to build their camps with the aid of volunteering building engineers and project managers.
Dream City is the area where participants literally take the festival’s future into their own hands. The Dreamers are forerunners in a process that becomes part of the festival DNA, namely a process of social innovation, change and development for the festival as well as the participants. When all the other guests are checking in at the festival Sunday 29 June, the Dreamers will already be snug in their camps awaiting your visit. Here you can walk along the Dream City Boulevard or Klip Klap Allé (Flip Flop Avenue)–named by the community council established by the Dreamers themselves. The street (de)signs were created at a work shop taking place in one of nine work weekends.

CAMP NASTY
“Garbage kings” of Roskilde, Camp Nasty, have a ball collecting your stuff (sleeping bags, boots, tents etc). This year they have created The Church of Shame, a proud beacon in purple and pink, the colours of Camp Nasty. And YES, they do marriage ceremonies. Leave your dignity by the entrance. Among the results of the effort are Blast Beast Metal Camp: a pentagram shaped sanctuary for metal fans, listeners and curious souls, the sustainable western community Trashville and the Bash Back camp : a community working to create a safe space where women, homosexuals and sexual minorities can meet, discuss and practice how to defend themselves from harrassment or assault due to their gender identity or sexuality. Last but not least, Dream City is one area at Roskilde that is not surrounded by dust and dirt. In the Dream City Garden you can kick back and relax in our home made pallet furniture and stroll around in the green common area – enjoying the lovely scent of fresh herbs and nice summer flowers.
DREAM CITY’S DOGMAS
To be a part of Dream City 2015 you must: — Acquire a ticket to Roskilde Festival 2015. — Consider your project/camp a gift to Dream City that can be shared with the rest of the Dreamers and festivalgoers. — Think sustainably and be socially responsible. — Whatever you bring you must take with you again when you leave Dream City.

CITY
Floating mindfulness, steamy sauna visits and hangover yoga. Relax City is the place to recuperate after a rough night of dancing and singing. This year, Roskilde Festival has bent the word “relaxation” just a tad. Besides just kicking back and chilling, you can explore how physical exercise can make your festival days energetic and fun. New this year is calisthenics: a type of street workout using only your body weight for challenging exercises. If you prefer a less intense interpretation of relaxation, we offer a session of mindfulness on a floating barge in the lake or a quiet moment in our wooden sauna. You can also challenge your friends to a boardgame or get a good stretching out under the guidance of our awesome yoga instructors. And of course, a dip in the lake never gets old. You can enjoy Ricco’s coffee-to-go and organic refreshments all over the area. There’ll be a variety of international DJ’s on the decks, and after midnight the lake is lit up by light installations. There’ll be lots to see, taste, hear and explore if you just wander through the area, but to aid your voyage of discovery, check out Relax City’s detailed schedule online.
SWIMMING LAKE
Dive into our very own swimming lake at Relax City. There is free access to the lake for all festival participants, as long as you’re not affected by drugs or alcohol. There will be life guards present. Remember that Mother Nature, unlike your own mother, doesn’t like soap and shampoo, so please only use these in the showers and not in the lake.

In search of the best sound This year, around 100 DTU students will descend on Roskilde Festival with over 20 projects aimed at improving festival conditions even further. Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has tested the sound levels at the festival since 2010. We measure acoustics in the tents, as well as sound pressure levels and noise dispersion from the loud speaker systems, both in front and behind the stage. We do so in order to help festival guests enjoy
the best possible sound with a minimum of inconvenience. We also have projects featuring 3D printing, screw sorting, apps, waste management and an efficient urine drainage system—all aimed at im proving the festival experience— and all initiated by DTU students. Welcome to the urban sports area of Game City, where all activities are chosen and developed for your entertainment and are (almost) as fun for spectators, as they are for participants. Every day brings new tournaments and competitions. In some cases there are even prizes to be won. Knowledge of the games and skill is not important here as even well known sports have a new twist to them in Game City. With a dream of changing the world through sports and music, Roskilde Festival and Hummel have teamed up with the organisations Sensational, GAME and Play31 to organise activities that are open for everyone.

ANDERS WAHRÉN Q&A
42
Q&A
ANDERS WAHRÉN, HEAD OF PROGRAMMING It’s your first year as head of programming. Will the audience notice any difference? “I don’t think they will notice my presence directly, but they may have noticed that the Booking Committee as a whole has worked in a slightly different way. For example we have been announcing bands and schedule much earlier than usual.” What does Roskilde Festival’s music profile look like right now? “Our guests will experience a music profile that keeps changing and evolving in the same pace as the world around it. We have more eletronic and urban music than previously. Some will of course try to connect this to the fact that this is my first year on the job, but it is not something I myself have pushed through. The Booking Committee as a whole can take credit for taking a big step in that direction.”

REINVENTING ROCK-SKILDE
Is it hard to reinvent yourself when you are the oldest music festival in Northern Europe? “Not only are we the oldest festival. We have also been synonymous with the 90’s rock explosion, in a decade where we also suddenly became very big ourselves. Rock is very much a label that has been stuck to us. Our goal is, and has always been, to forge stronger bonds with all new music and we know that our guests want to hear more of that as well. I know it seems like a paradox to talk about rejuvenation when our top headliner is The Rolling Stones, but if you look at the programme as a whole it reveals a young and curious music profile.”
Anders Wahrén, Head of programming
“Our guests will experience a music profile that keeps changing and evolving in the same pace as the world around it.”
43
Roskilde Festival has a tradition for inspiring and maybe even educating its audience. Why is that important? Why not just book the big names? “It’s nice and convenient to just listen to what you already know and be reaffirmed when going to concerts. We consider it our job to do more than that; to inspire and challenge people’s taste in music. The feeling of experiencing something unexpected is fantastic and delivering positive surprises is one of Roskilde Festival’s greatest strenghts. At the same time it’s important to ensure that the stars of tomorrow gain an audience for the future. We hope that our guests will notice acts like Die Nerven and Juana Molina, support them and attend their shows at other venues. Maybe they will return to us later and perform on a larger stage. That way we have a triple-win situation: the artists expand their fan base, we ensure that we also have acts to present in five years time and we have an audience that returns year after year because they know that we can deliver truly unique experiences.”
As in previous years there are a lot of African acts on the line-up. Some might say that the bookings have an air of development aid? “I couldn’t disagree more. We don’t book a band or an artist unless we see real musical quality. Big Western names like Damon Albarn and, back in his day, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones have admitted that they wouldn’t have been succesful without African music. This year on the Arena stage Friday night the afrofunksters Sinkane will pay tribute to the Nigerian producer and instrumentalist William Onyeabor, alongside members of Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. I expect it will be a huge party. The Western musicians discovered African music years ago. We hope the audience will follow suit.” PHOTO: CHRISTIAN HJORTH
SIZE DOESN’T ALWAYS MATTER
A lot of focus is on hip hop this year and it will both open and close Orange Stage... “True, and with those schedule slots hip hop may appear to have received more focus than is actually the case, but the attention is definitely deserved. It is a scene that has grown but historically it has had trouble establishing itself in a live context and has been associated with cancellations and poor shows. However, partly due to the restructuring of the finances in the music industry the American hip hop artists take their European performances and their live shows in general a lot more seriously. This has led to better shows. Hip hop as a genre has also become much broader. I would actually call music like Outkast and Drake pop music, which is not a bad word in my book.”
Q&A ANDERS WAHRÉN
Are there any genres you would like to highlight? “I always emphasise the electronic scene because it is constantly evolving. But we have focused heavily on it for years now. At the moment there is a lot going on around the psych rock scene, which in part is very interesting because people disagree on the definition of the genre. It is a growing wave in the US and the UK and is, I suppose, a mix of acid rock, newish punk and hard rock – often with a touch of something electronic.”
WORLD’S MOST HARDWORKING BANDS

WORLD’S MOST HARDWORKING BANDS
Logistics and the unpredictability of life on the road can be challenging for all bands from time to time. However, musicians from Africa and the developing world in general are met with the bulk of the issues when travelling to the West for gigs and festivals like Roskilde. Ridiculously long and unflexible processing times at embassies and consulates can often end up as show-stoppers. “In the end it comes down to the wealthy part of the world trying to shield itself from the poor part”, says Peter Hvalkof, booker at Roskilde Festival. He has been dealing with these problems since the mid 90s. ”We are usually met by great understanding and a will to accommodate from very helpful officials, but the political system makes visa applications both difficult and expensive”.
All this means extra costs that go way beyond what you would normally connect with playing music for a living. “Of the more than 1000 artists that I have booked for Roskilde Festival from those parts of the world, we know only of three persons who have abused their visa and not returned to their home country again. Most of the artists that are affected by these issues have families and careers in their home country, and the current state of the system makes it extremely expensive and inconvenient for them to visit us”, says Peter Hvalkof.

EXTRA COSTS and WASTED WEEKS
The Master Musicians of Jajouka, who are playing at Roskilde Festival this year, were forced to travel together from their village in northern Morocco to the capital Rabat and stand at attention in order to apply for a visa for their Roskilde gig. The processing time for a visa is about a fortnight. During the processing time the embassy keeps the passports, which effectively put a stop to all the group’s other touring activities. This incident is one of the milder examples from this year’s festival, but there has been far worse over the years. It is a constant problem. Artists are often forced to be away from home for weeks while they wait for sluggish civil services to process their applications.

45 Freemuse – The World Forum on Music and Censorship is an independent organisation working extensively with the free movement of music, including visa issues that arise. Roskilde Festival has on several occasions donated funds to Freemuse, whose secretariat is in Copenhagen. “If the European countries are serious about honouring their ratification of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity they need to make visa and work permit procedures and the general access to the European market for artists more flexible, transparent and homogenous”, says Freemuse in a comment about a report on the subject.

A NIGHT OF
DOOM Saturday night at Gloria could very well turn into a bit of a party – in the slow and draggingly melancholic way. Dark Buddha Rising, Drug Honkey and Mournful Congregation (in that order) will take Roskilde Festival’s most intimate stage. They will each deliver their version of the genre doom metal, one of the oldest sub-genres and also noteworthy for having spawned several sub-sub-genres. This evening of genre-overindulgence have come to life as a result an experiment that was highly praised by the audience. In 2012 the festival gathered Baroness, Crowbar, Red Fang and Weedeater in a “genre package”, which upon unwrapping revealed itself as a sweaty and dusty evening packed full of Southern metal.

A NIGHT OF DOOM
46 Anders Bøtter, Radio show host, DR P6 Beat
“I’m not a worshipper of any particular subgenre, but it’s clear to see that such nichepackages are a real treat for die hard fans”
47
CARCASS UK
“A remarkable booking. Carcass has meant a hell of a lot to metal music, but have been silent on the album front for 17 years. Last year they returned with a comeback album, and this is definitely a booking that the guys over at Copenhell envy Roskilde Festival for.”
ROB ZOMBIE
US
“I saw him at Valby Hallen when he supported Marilyn Manson. Or so I thought. It turned out to be the other way around. Rob Zombie was 100 times better. His stage show is ridiculously good and perfect for his 22.30 slot.”
PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS US
“Always a pleasure to see him and now he’s released his first solo album. Guaranteed to be fantastic.”
Booker Stefan Gejsing hand picked and combined the acts. “This was an opportunity to experience different bands with the same starting point and afterwards we found the audience requesting something similar. I have been to the Copenhagen underground festival Heavy Days In Doomtown a few times and seen for myself the interest that bands from the heaviest and slowest end of the metal spectrum attract and this spawned the idea of creating a package of bands that play doom in different forms.”
HELHORSE vs. THE PSYKE PROJECT DK
“This is the Danish metal contribution that I am looking for ward to the most. If they together deliver just half of what they individually are capable of, it will be an absolutely mindblowing concert. Mandatory for anyone with even the smallest interest in Danish metal!”
DEFTONES US
“After the passing of their bass player Chi Cheng they once again have to reinvent themselves. It will be exciting to see in which direction they will go. But they are always at the top of their game, no matter what.”
Metal aficionado Anders Bøtter from the radio show Sort Søndag (Black Sunday) on DR P6 Beat lauds the initiative. Not least because he himself was in the crowd at the aforementioned Southern evening in 2012. “I’m not a worshipper of any particular sub-genre, but it’s clear to see that such niche-packages are a real treat for die hard fans”. The evening’s three chosen bands represent a broad sprectre within in the genre. You can thus expect both the occult, the jazzy and the really feet-draggingly heavy on a Saturday night that moves from darkness into the truly black.

Less torso and much more live music seems to be the recipe for the Outkast reunion/farewell tour – a party which has been blessed with surprises, a horn section and even a polar bear. Two performances at Coachella were practice. Now comes the finale.
EARL SWEATSHIRT US
Although he is as old school as a 20-year old can be, Earl Sweatshirt is celebrated for making his words electrifying – also on stage. Music reviewers from all over the world have witnessed how far Earl has gone, armed with just wit and on-track charisma.
PUSHA T US
Hip Hop doesn’t get more raw and dirty than Pusha T who – of course – will take us on a trip through trap and street life with tracks from his much acclaimed solo debut My Name is my Name. He is the street. Pure and simple.
DILATED PEOPLES US
Having created a hit song named “Live On Stage” shows great commitment to the live audience and one that is to be taken seriously. FROM RISING TO ARENA Last year you performed at Roskilde Festival’s upcoming stage, Pavilion Junior. What did you gain from that experience? “It was insanely cool to play Pavilion Junior last year. I’ll never forget it. Performing at Roskilde Festival had been a dream of mine for many years so finally being there – and even having such a large crowd – was just out of this world. I remember almost crying. It was just crazy.” From your perspective is there anything in general to be said about the Danish upcoming music scene right now? “I just hope that people, who make music – upcomers or no – feel great about the music they create and that they have something they just have to express. It’s important to be ambitious, aim for the skies and all that, but the main thing is putting your heart into it and doing it for the right reasons. I don’t think you should be too cynical about using one thing or the other in your creative process (even though many people are). You should let go and do what feels right. That’s not saying that aiming for the skies and thinking internationally isn’t cool! We live in a world where borders are getting more and more blurred, so of course you should try to reach as many people as possible, but I also think it’s super awesome if you want to create music for a smaller audience. As long as you do what feels right for you and what satisfies your needs.”
“It was insanely cool to play Pavilion Junior last year. I’ll never forget it. Can you in any way endorse one or two performers in this year’s Rising program? “Yes! I’m really digging Karl William! He supported me on my tour this spring and both he and his crew were so nice. And he just sings awesomely, has a cool and honest attitude on stage, great producers and good people around him to support his talent. How do you feel about stepping onto the second largest stage of the festival? “I’m just thrilled to get the chance to play at Roskilde again this year. When I was told that I was to play Pavilion Junior last year I almost fainted with joy and I had the same feeling when I was allowed to perform again. Roskilde is the first festival I ever attended as a teenager – and I almost died of excitement over being here then – so the festival has a special place in my heart. And seriously – every Danish band loves being asked to perform at Roskilde because it’s just so much fun!”

ALONG PETE SEEGER AND BEYOND...
Entertainer, folk musician and peace and environmental activist Pete Seeger (1919-2014) always considered audience participation one of his main causes. Roskilde festival invites you to a series of unique sing-along events that will relive the legend’s sing-along spirit. With the audience as the main instrument, Danish musician and composer Frederik Thaae will be the conductor and choir leader and lovingly encourage participants to take a different journey into and beyond Seeger’s back catalogue. You are invited to actively take part in this event alongside other early bird festivalgoers,
AN IDEALIST ABOVE ALL
Pete Seeger gave a concert in Denmark in the beginning of the 60’s. He could easily have sold out one of Copenhagen’s central venues but chose to perform the tour’s only Danish gig in an orphanage in the small village of Jægerspris. The manager of the place was an outspoken opponent of senator McCarthy’s witch hunts on leftwingers in the harsh political climate of those Cold War years.
and you will get the opportunity to use your voice with one of Denmark’s most boundary-seeking and innovative multi-talented artists. Frederik Thaae gave as many as three different concerts at Roskilde Festival 2008 under the artist alias A Kid Hereafter and has since 2009 acted as certified city composer for the city of Roskilde. “Pete Seeger and Beyond...” will take place at Gloria Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Everyone’s invited – even if you think you can’t sing. pete seeger and beyond... at gloria friday 4 july saturday 5 july sunday 6 july

FAUSTIX DK
He has produced for R&B icon Ciara, and Paul Oakenfold is one of many supporters. Now Faustix adds nitroglycerine to the EDM cocktail at Roskilde Festival. The Danish trap comet combines house and trap elements in a hard-hitting, bombastic mix. He has also been noticed by Diplo, who collaborated with the Dane on the banger “Revolution”.
FRANSKILDSE
Love Ojensa and Tim Söderström have formed Franskild in order to live out their love of house music, which they combine with pop and spherical elements. With its large, open rooms, typical house piano riffs, soaring synths and danceable beats, the music is made for daydreams of palms, cocktails and baby-blue waves.

JAAKKO EINO KALEVI FI
How would Kraftwerk sound if they were from Finland and at the same time had a spiritual kinship with Ariel Pink and Connan Mockasin? The answer could very well be Jaakko Eino Kalevi. Disco, lounge, funk, krautrock and sultry new wave are all stations on the journey when the Finn takes us aboard.
The spirits of Björk, Under Byen and The XX meet somewhere in the winter wilderness when Samaris takes the stage. Using clarinet, laptop and clear, spellbinding vocals the trio weaves a tapestry of electro-acoustic hypnosis. This is crackling electronica with urban sparks – but also with an ancient soul that goes far beyond the history of electronic music.
KANT DK
Producer and DJ Kant is a new strong name on Denmark’s electronic scene. He used to be part of the hip hop scene, but his deep house has evolved as if this genre was his true calling. Kant has already gained buzz in the deep corners of the internet, on respected labels and at the trendsetting clubs.

Meet one of the trap genre’s Danish talents. Snavs (meaning grit or dirt in Danish) is a half-hysterical hybrid of bass and instrumental hip hop with plenty of cheap, canned beats, remixes of remixes, skizo-rhythms and distorted synths. Snavs’ first EP 808% has proven his diabolical talent with a Roland 808 drum machine.

London, Chicago and Diplo’s Mad Decent collective are along for the ride when Slick Shoota takes us on a journey into his kaleidoscope of electronic music that can easily be enjoyed without knowing all the proper genre terms. Styles such as juke, UK garage and jungle go together when the Norwegian gets the party started.

THE DIVERS DK
The 80’s new romantic sounds throw long darkviolet shadows into the new millennium. The Divers are a new Danish band that invokes the distant decade with musical tact and surges of synthesizers. According to the trio themselves, they also draw inspiration from the flickering noise rock scene of the early 90s.
THE AWESOME WELLES DK
Copenhagen-based The Awesome Welles play raw, alternative rock that grabs hold of the essentials of life. No-nonsense, simple songs but with heaviness and memorable hooks that could easily win over an audience hungry for dark rock in the vein of Interpol and The National.
BLAUE BLUME DK
The blue flower of poetry is in no danger of losing its petals in the company of Blaue Blume. The band’s flamboyant and emotional falsetto rock has its own, highly decadent modus operandi, applying organic 70s rock in order to bloom in countless directions.
BLOODY BEACH
NO
This band from the Norwegian mountain city of Bergen gives off an air of tropical beaches, parties and psychedelic pagan celebrations. Bloody Beach mixes funky, golden guitar rock with surf, pop and dub. This very effective mix has already taken them to several different stages far from their Norwegian home.

EMILIE NICOLAS NO
Her atmospheric electronic pop songs share little, equipment and harmony-wise, with the jazz music she worked with during her years studying at music conservatory. On stage Emilie Nicolas has also made a powerful impression with a performance that already seems fully fledged and ready for the big spotlight.
Jonas Smith of blaue blume delivers his falsettos in a manner that has warranted comparisons to the mighty Antony Hegarty and Hayden Thorpe of Wild Beasts.
They were spewed out of the same nihilistic punk scene that gave us Iceage and Lower. But unlike their brothers in arms Communions seek more welltravelled roads with their fairly accessible melodic rock. The four-piece looks like an exciting new chapter for the expanding Copenhagen punk scene.
FÖRTRESS DK
Danish music’s rock missile drives through sound waves boiling with heavy rock. Even though Förtress haven’t been at it for more than two years, their songs are still ready to fly. This is hard rock with redhot balls and a razor-sharp and self-ironic charm that never gets out of hand and betrays the music.

GET YOUR GUN
GET YOUR GUN DK
Danish newcomers Get Your Gun deal with bluesy, dusty Americana rock in a way that should convince everybody who also digs Nick Cave in his coarse and defeated mood. Their shows are a journey through regret and redemption by means of noisy guitars, minor melodies, dragging rhythms and the strong, lonesome voice of Andreas Westmark.
HEIMATT DK
Magnus Grilstad has gathered a team of reliable musicians to ignite his acoustic folk. And many have already picked up on the clear and pure tunes. With violin, tambourine and a lot of acoustic guitar Heimatt shapes an organic sound. First-class handmade Scandinavian music with an expressive vocalist in front.

“Highly promising, in other words. Or should we say: rising.” These are not our words but a quote from the British newspaper The Guardian. Kill J has attracted international attention with their dark-tinted, alternative R&B that could easily continue on the road to success paved by Quadron, Rhye and The Knife.
KINDRED FEVER NO
With their skeletal mixture of rock, surf, blues, and punk, Kindred Fever is a gale force wind from the amplifiers. Jarle Langåker sings and handles the guitar and Linn Hagen Olsen takes care of the drums (and occasionally the trumpet). With very few resources at their disposal the duo manages to tap right into the coronary artery of rock’n’roll.

Portishead’s performance at Orange Stage in 2011 made Mont Oliver seek a new direction. Hip hop, R&B and trip hop has made its way to the front. ARTO LINDSAY BAND US
With the trendsetting noise trio DNA, Arto Lindsay played a part in New York’s nihilistic and harsh no wave movement in the late 70s. In the 80s and 90s Lindsay’s music – which is often laden with sun-drenched bossanova and tropicalia – was more influenced by his Brazilian upbringing. With Arto Lindsay we are served a round of boundarybreaking and unpredictable pop music from a versatile songwriter, guitarist and producer.
Balkan beats and Eastern European sounds are twisted when Balkan Khans take the stage. The ensemble consists of appraised musicians playing instruments such as bag pipe, synthesizers, tuba and violin. The latter is played by the miraculous Venzi Takev who brings forth both playful and elegiac tones from his instrument. As a radical ingredient in this Eastern European stew, the virtuoso team features award-winning human beat boxer Skriller.

The A$AP crew are quickly becoming the most mythological hip hop unit since the Wu-Tang Clan first crossed swords. 2012 was A$AP Rocky’s year at Roskilde Festival. 2014 will be A$AP Ferg’s. In Istanbul’s Romany district there is music at work that is almost constantly at full throttle and gasping for air. Clarinetist Cüneyt Sepetçi is among the district’s most prominent names. The gipsy tones are packed with hotheaded pace, wild beats and virtuous interplay between the instruments making the music hectic, alive and kicking.

He turns R&B into something alien and haunted. Remixes of Beyonce, Solange, Haim and Mariah Carey have made Cyril Hahn quite a remix sensa-

CARING ABOUT OUR
FOOD FOOD and BEVERAGES WITH CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT and FOOD SAFETY
If you feel that we care about the food at Roskilde Festival you are not mistaken. The way human beings produce, distribute and prepare our food is probably the largest single contributor to climate change; both in the world in general and at a festival. That’s why we try to limit our impact on the environment. Roskilde Festival works with various contributors allowing us to vouch for the quality and environmental impact of their goods. Consequently all dairy products on the festival are organic from the dairy Naturmælk, all the coffee sold is organic from Peter Larsen Coffee and the juice and wine available in every bar is also organic. Furthermore, we ask our food stalls to exclusively use organic pasta, rice, canned tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, carrots and lettuce in their meals. All food stalls are also required to have at least one vegetarian dish on their menus. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration is in charge of regulatory controls of hygiene in all food stalls, who also have their own sanitation controls as well as a program to assist in the development of a good hygiene culture. This all sounds very reasonable. And in truth, we think it is.
A LARGE SELECTION
The approximately 150 food stalls and bars at the festival serve food and beverages, which cater to any taste, appetite or wallet while being mindful of the environment.
You can choose between anything from the classic festival burger to an environmentally sustainable meal made from local produce. To wash it down you can get anything from beer and sodas to homemade milkshakes.
If you feel that we care about the food at Roskilde Festival you are not mistaken.
HOW DO WE CHOOSE OUR FOOD STALLS?
The festival has a group of volunteers who work all year selecting and maintaining relations to the food stalls. We have chosen the stalls for Roskilde Festival 2014 using six different criteria: — Organics/Sustainability: In 2014 it is our goal that at least 30% of our food is organic and to have at least 10 stalls, who are more than 90 % organic. — Price: Participants who get by on student support from the government must also be able to eat their fill. — Quality: We would rather have freshly made food made from fresh produce than ready-to-serve, pre-cooked meals. — Realism: We select stalls that we know will be able to handle the pressure of running a food stall at Roskilde Festival. — Charity: We prefer stalls that use their profits for charitable purposes, i.e. sports or cultural associations. — Originality: We select new stalls that distinguish themselves from the existing selection of stalls.
95
But food at the festival is more than food stalls. There are plenty of culinary experiences to be had; food events and pop-up restaurants near Gloria or the opportunity to cook your own wholly organic meal during the Foodjam in City Centre East. Read more about this on the following pages.

HOW TO TURN
ORANGE
“HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP DEVELOP A NEW ROSKILDE-BEER?”
This question was posted on the festival’s webpage in January, and eventually three young festival veterans were selected. Students Sandra Vinding (25), Roald Simonsen (21) og Jonas Madsen (21) who share 12 years of festivals between them also share a passion for brewing beer. They were teamed up with experts from Jacobsen Brewhouse, an upscale brand of specialty beer owned by Carlsberg and named after Carlsberg’s founder, J.C. Jacobsen. Roskilde Festival had only one single requirement for this new beer: It had to be organic, thus abiding with the festival’s general food and beverage strategy for sustainability and organic foods. The easy part was to decide upon the type of beer, namely India Pale Ale – which among microbrewers is the most popular type of beer. However it was just as quickly decided not to make this Roskilde-version too bitter and strong, which tend to come with territory when making India Pale Ale.
ABOUT THE JACOBSEN ROSKILDE FESTIVAL BEER
The Jacobsen Roskilde Festival 2014 beer is a dry hopping, top-fermented Pale Ale. Among the aromas are orange, and the hop types: Citra, Summit and Mosaic. The beer has an alcohol percentage of 6,0. — Approximately 6,500 litres of the new beer has been brewed. You can buy it on tap in the Jacobsen bar in Roskilde Food Court . — The price is: On tap: Small (0.3L): 26 DKK/Large (0.5L): 40 DKK. Prices are incl. refund. — Festivals guests can taste the Jacobsen Roskilde Festival Beer for the very first time at an event in the Jacobsen bar. The event takes place Thursday 3 July 17:30.
99
“If it ends up being too bitter, none of my female friends will drink it.” The hard part has been adding in the festival’s “orange feeling”. What gives a beer that taste of summer and sound of music?
TURNING CHRISTMAS INTO SUMMER
Inspiration came from the cellar at Jacobsens and a bag of coronation and orange, ingredients which curiously enough both also are used for another Jacobsen ale; the Golden Naked Christmas Ale. With that in mind and nose it was decided to use oranges and other citrus fruits to turn Christmas into summer. The result is an IPA that is more fruity than bitter and slightly stronger than the draft beer sold elsewhere at the festival, but with an alcohol percentage of 6,0 it is also lighter than most IPA’s. As the panel argued: “You should find it possible to drink more than one!”
ANOTHER NEW and ORGANIC BEER DEBUTS AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL
In addition to the Jacobsen Roskilde Festival beer you can find Tuborg’s new organic draught R Å (Raw) at this year’s festival. Tuborg RÅ is brewed by Tuborg, and is based on an intense wish from Roskilde Festival to be able to offer an organic beer as an addition to the usual pilsner beer found everywhere at the festival site. Tuborg RÅ is unfiltered which both makes it look slightly cloudy and enhances the taste of malt and yeast. Tuborg RÅ has an alcohol per percentage of 4,5. The price is the same as regular draft beer: On tap: Small (0,3L): 25 DKK /Large (0,5L) 38 DKK. Prices are incl. refund.
HOW TO TURN BEER ORANGE
As Roald Simonsen points out, the emphasis was on making an easily accessible beer:

Environmental and social sustainability is important for Roskilde Festival. This also applies to food and beverages.
DID YOU KNOW THAT… REDUCING FOOD WASTAGE
Working with the non-profit organisation Stop Wasting Food we collect hygienically safe and usable produce and distribute it among shelters for the homeless and refugee centers where there are hungry mouths to feed. Some food is cooked by volunteer chefs and frozen so it can be distributed later. The goal for 2014 is to collect and distribute 30-50 tons of otherwise wasted food.
ARTIST CATERING THE NEW NORDIC WAY
Backstage we give the artists and their crew a taste of New Nordic cooking. We have a large group of volunteer chefs who cook a 70% organic menu using mostly local and seasonal produce.
A MOSTLY ORGANIC FOOD COURT
All the food stalls in Roskilde Food Court are required to use at least 60% organic produce in their cooking. You will find a handful of stalls that are +90% organic as well as delicious vegetarian alternatives.
So do the children in Africa. In the CITY centres and on the festival site you can get water from Lovespring. And it’s not bottled and transported from a foreign country, it’s from right beneath our feet. Each time you get your water here you support Lovespring’s work with water projects in developing countries.
FROM HAPPY COWS TO HAPPY CAMPERS
All dairy products (milk, butter yoghurt etc.) at Roskilde Festival is from the Danish organic company Naturmælk. They work with 31 family-run farms in southern Jutland to produce high quality and environmentally friendly organic products. Many of them even work with biodynamic farming, which has even higher demands for sustainability.
A WINE OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE
The one-liter red and white wines are organic and brought in from Italy rather than from overseas. They are imported specially for the festival and come in FSC labeled packaging, which not only is better for the environment but also gives the wine a longer shelf life. PHOTO: CHRIS TONNESEN

THE APPetizer
It can be difficult to remember just where you saw that chicken tortilla or the Asian noodle salad you desperately need. Help is near: APPetize it! Do you have allergies, is on a special diet, feel like something special or simply can’t remember where you found that special meal last year? Don’t worry, we will help you navigate through Roskilde Festival 150 food stalls and bars.
ALLERGIES AND SPECIAL DIETS
Every stall has to sign the contents of their dishes and be able to account for the ingredients. If you have allergies or simply is just interested in what you eat, you can always ask for the person in charge and have him or her list the ingredients. Roskilde Food Court at Gloria is a good place to start if you have special needs. Here you find stalls specialised in e.g. fish, vegetarian, non-gluten etc. See page 97. At CITYcentre East FoodJam allows you to compose your own 100 % organic meal for 50 DKK and in Dream City ØKOkalaset provides a DIY kitchen, also organic.
Here you can easily search for food and drinks everywhere on the festival grounds. You can sort the results after budget, location, type of food and user evaluation. With the map function, it is easy to find the food stand you are looking for and after your visit, you can post your own evaluation. APPetizer is Available for iPhone and Android. Text RF FOOD to 1204 to download the app. If you don’t have a Danish mobile service provider, text to +45 42409019 instead.
USE #RFFOOD AND HELP OTHERS
If you instagram your favorite hangover burger or tip your vegetarian friends on Facebook about the best veggie meal on the festival, use the hashtag #rffood, so others can find and use your tips too.

NINE OUT OF TEN CHILDREN IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES NOW START IN SCHOOL Today 90 percent of children in developing countries start in first grade. In 2000 the world’s countries promised each other that all children shall have the opportunity to go to school. Since then the number of out-of-school children has almost halved, and equally many boys and girls sit in the classrooms. This is an important progress because education paves the way out of poverty. But we still need the last 10 percent, so the struggle continues. We can end poverty Read more on www.worldsbestnews.dk

SAFETY CAMP
WATCH OUT FOR THIEVES!
SAFETY AT THE
STAGES Being at a concert should never be boring, but it shouldn’t be dangerous either. Therefore, there are a number of safety requirements and precautions at all the stages at Roskilde Festival that we ask you to follow. For the sake of you and your friends.
TAKE CARE OF THOSE AROUND YOU
The safety at Roskilde Festival is continually evaluated to remove and reduce risks. We closely follow and participate in national and international developments in the safety field, but we still need your help to ensure that you and everybody around you gets the best and most safe concert experience possible.
PHOTO: CHRISTIAN HJORTH
STAGES SAFETY
112 please help us with the following — Pay attention to – and follow – the safety information presented on the big screens at the stages and the guidelines from the crowd safety staff in the orange vests. — Pay attention to friends and people around you. — If you need help, or see others who do, please address the crowd safety staff. — Make sure to sleep, eat, and drink so that your body is supplied with rest and energy. If you feel unwell, or see someone else who seems to need help, address the festival staff.
PROTECT YOUR EARS
You won’t get much out of Roskilde Festival if you can’t hear anything. If you experience a ringing or a buzzing in your ears you have to be careful – it’s a serious danger signal. Therefore – buy a set of earplugs. They can be found in all kiosks, drink stalls and merchandise stalls and cost 10 DKK.
113 At Orange Stage, there are two entrances to the four sections in front. If you want to go to sections B or D, you have to use the entrance east of the stage. The entrance to sections A and C is west of the stage.
move back and to the side if you feel unsafe during a concert.
A
B
C
D
PIT SYSTEMS
The pit systems in front of Orange stage and Arena are safety constructions that make the concert experience safe for those of you who would like to be right in front of the stage. Show up early at the concerts since there is limited amount of space in the pit systems and many who would like to get in there. The pit system entrances are located at both sides of the Orange stage and in the east side of Arena. The green and red lights at the entrance tell you if there is free space available or if it’s full. You can’t stay in the pit between concerts since they have to be cleared and cleaned. remember! Staying in the pit systems during concerts can be a very intense and physical experience. We ask that you only stay in there if you feel completely safe at all times.
DO NOT
— Crowd surf surf. Crowd surfing is very dangerous. Nobody likes your shoe in their face, and you might fall down or be trampled at worst. Crowd surfing is strictly forbidden at all stages and can cause immediate expulsion from the festival. — Form human chains. You put others at risk by creating unrest in the crowd. — Run or push to get in front. You create waves in the crowd and increase the risk of someone falling or getting crushed — Sit on the shoulders of somebody. You risk getting hurt, and it ruins the concert experience for others.

HOW TO ENTER THE PIT
DON’T JUST
WASTE AWAY
GET RID OF YOUR TRASH!
It’s getting easier to get rid of your trash! This year every Agora has its own new Trash Station where you can sort and dispose your trash. Between 9:00 – 16:00 Trash Station guards help you sort your trash correctly. Look for the Trash Station symbol. You can also deliver your trash to the Festival’s orange trash trucks, which you will encounter in the camping area. They drive around collecting trash all day long. Ask the guards for garbage bags.
CLEAN AREAS
Do you want to live cleaner and greener? Then pitch your tent in one of the Clean Areas B, K and J. As always, Area J is “Clean & Silent”, B and K are “regular” areas where you can party as loud as you want – but where everyone helps in keeping the area clean and comfortable. The Clean Areas are for those of you who want to take part in keeping your camping area nice. It is for you who prefer grass to broken glass, and you who would rather dispose of your garbage than sit in it.
CLEAN OUT LOUD
If you are visiting Area E this year, you will experience that it is not just the Festival’s most festive area, but also one of the cleanest. This area is the home of Clean Out Loud. Throughout the last four years Clean Out Loud has worked to change the trash culture on Roskilde Festival through community, festive trash parades and creative events.
PASS IT ON – DONATE YOUR CAMPING GEAR
Let others benefit from your old camping gear, when you leave the festival. This year, you’re again able to donate your tent, sleeping mats, unopened canned food etc. to homeless and those in need. Deliver your equipment throughout the week at the Trash Stations in agoras B, E, C, G, K, L, N, and P.
DID YOU KNOW THAT...?
— During last year’s festival 1,495 tons of trash was collected. — More than 3,5 million bottles and cans pass the festival’s refund system every year. — Last year Camp Aid collected and passed on more than 1,000 tents, 3,000 sleeping bags and blankets, 1,800 sleeping pads and air mattresses, 80 sacks of footwear and 50 sacks of clothes. — The festival sorts trash in 12 fractions. For instance food stalls sort all their organic waste, which is turned into energy and compost. — In 2009 the festival guests donated more than 1,000,000 DKK worth of refund for charity. You can donate too! Throw your refund in the turquoise containers – also cans without refund label as well as wine and liquor bottles.

MEDIA (SOCIAL MEDIA, GUIDE, RADIO, and NEWSPAPER)
Out of respect for the nine young men who lost their lives on 30 June 2000 at Roskilde Festival and their relatives, the festival established a memorial in 2001 at the western border of the audience area of Orange Stage. The spot was established in order for us to commemorate and remember ‘…how fragile we are…’. Lars Skov Nielsen has created the sculpture at the site.
the cloakrooms at each agora are free and you can have almost anything stored. You can also charge your mobile phone for a price of 10 DKK.

PARKING general parking rules — You are not allowed to sleep in your car — You may not use open fire, gas stoves or other sources of heat in the parking areas
See page 8
There is no surveillance in the parking areas so your own insurance policy must cover damage or theft. Roskilde Festival recommends that everyone uses public transportation or rides their bicycle. It’s better for the environment and means that we can use the areas for camping instead.
121
All parking areas are open around the clock until Monday 7 July at 15:00. See map of the parking areas at the back of this booklet.
