President’s Message ORs as well. Sadly, I have again attended a number of funerals and what worries me is that some were in School in the 80’s. On a personal note I read in the last edition about a study mate, Herbert (Bert) Blair, who passed away recently. He was also in Mitre.
Once again, I seem to have been busy on Rossallian matters. We have had a full Committee Meeting and a number of sub-committee meetings covering all aspects of the Club and of course School since I last wrote to you. In February, we celebrated the life of Stephen Winkley in a Memorial Service attended by his wife and family. It was a lovely service with colleagues, ORs and pupils giving their recollections on a man who did so much for Rossall. March 21st was the OR Weekend. Our Committee Meeting took place in the morning, followed by a splendid lunch in the Dining Hall. We then went to Spread Eagle for the unveiling of the new Honours Board to those from SE who died in the Great War. OR, Commodore Jeremy Rigby, CO Portsmouth unveiled the Board. Men’s Hockey took place in the morning, Ladies Hockey early afternoon and Ross Hockey on the ‘shore’ mid afternoon. OR Jake Thompson told us about his trek to the North Pole which was fascinating. Our AGM took place in the Sumner followed by a Chapel Service. The day was rounded off with a superb meal for 180 ORs and guests in the Dining Hall. I was delighted to see, not only old friends but so many young
I am delighted to report that the German Dinner is back on the agenda, thanks to Dr Doris Dohmen. It will be in Düsseldorf on 7th November and you should have already received details. Two Branch Dinners took place in May; Oxford organised by Simon Barlass and The Lakes organised by Edna Fayle and Gill and George Scarlett. The Head, Elaine Purves, attended Oxford whilst I attended The Lakes. Both are very popular. June saw Chris and I crossing the Pennines to the White Rose county to be with Sue and David Holroyd at Ilkley Golf Club for another very pleasant Yorkshire Lunch. Some time ago Tizz Hall,Secretary of Ladies Hockey approached the Committee to ask if the Club would be prepared to sponsor kit for the team. This was agreed and after designs had been presented, one was chosen and I am delighted to say is being produced ready for start of the season. As you may recall, the Harry Potter Readathon at School in June raised money for the local children’s hospice and for a defibrillator for the School. It was a wonderful three days and Chris and I enjoyed taking part on the Saturday. Our sincere thanks must go to Jim and Moira Cowpe, who not only organised it but were awake for most of the three days and nights of the reading. Later that month,
we gathered at Twickenham for a superb evening, again meeting old friends and making new ones. There is a full report in this edition. The Junior School Prize Day and the re-opening of the Dick Richards Pavilion took place in early July, the later being again reported on in The Horizon. The new Rossall School web site is now up and running. We are part of the site and I would urge you to explore what is available to you. We have two more events coming up in September. The Late Summer BBQ on Friday 25th September at The Oriental Club in London and the Manchester Branch Lunch on 27th at the Stanneylands Hotel, Wilmslow. The Birmingham Dinner will be on Friday 13th November and is in the capable hands of John Whitlock. As we know the Club’s commitment is to support The School and at the same time we should also support The Rossall Foundation. You will find details of what The Foundation has set out to do over the coming months later in this publication. I hope, like me and many other ORs you will consider supporting this worthwhile cause as it works to benefit current and future Rossallians. I must thank Sharon for all her interest and hard work over the last 6 months on our behalf. Again I would like to thank the Committee for all their hard work over the past 6 months. They give of their time freely and enthusiastically and this is very much appreciated. Floreat Rossallia! Roger Walker (M 57-61)

A word from The Head, Elaine Purves The Summer Term ended on a high note with the wonderful OR Dinner at Twickenham; I had never imagined that I would make a Twickenham debut, but one short pre-dinner speech later and I can add that to my growing list of unexpected achievements! It was great to see so many ORs at the dinner, some who have been in touch with School for many years, but an even greater number of ORs who have not been in touch for decades. How fabulous that an event such as our Twickenham Dinner could be the catalyst for renewed connections, reminiscences and friendships. I do hope that you will continue to keep in touch with each other and with School – that invitation to come and visit was genuine and heartfelt; we love to see alumni back at school and you are welcome to come at any time of the year – just get in touch so that we can welcome you and arrange a tour. It has also been lovely to get out
to OR dinners around the country, including the Oxford Dinner at Radley College which was once again delightfully organised with precision detail by Simon Barlass and his family. I commend this dinner to all of you within striking distance of Oxford – Team Barlass provide the most delicious meal and the venue is lovely! I was also delighted to attend the LORD gathering at the RAF Club in London – finally my diary enabled me to attend and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of so many esteemed ORs in such a grand setting! My colleagues Sharon Potts, Henry Shepherd, new Deputy Head, Robert Robinson and Bursar, Emma Sanderson have also thoroughly enjoyed attending OR Dinners in the Lakes and Yorkshire, returning with tales of great food and great company. Thank you for inviting us!
new uniform and sports kit for all phases of the school and a new website. The new school curriculum heralds the introduction of Mandarin and Drama as well as the return of Cookery and Latin – I hope you all approve! I am very excited about seeing the new ventures slot into place in readiness for the new school year.
I hope this finds you and yours all In school, we have been very busy well; I hope to see many of you finalising a number of important new in the coming school year – the ventures for September, including Triennial Dinner seems a good a new Senior School curriculum, reason to make a journey to Rossall!
A word from The Secretary, Ian Preston Stepping into Jim Cowpe’s shoes is a daunting task, they are metaphorically very large! Jim took on his third stint as Rossallian Club Secretary at a time when we were in need of someone with proven experience, integrity and stature. He did not let us down and we all owe him a great debt of gratitude for providing the stability we needed at that time. He is a true ‘Rossall Legend’. Taking on this role is not only an honour but a great pleasure, at a time when the unity of purpose between the School and Club has never been closer. Jim would be the first to admit that his relationship with modern technology and communication was ‘strained’ and whilst there may be no more hand written letters, I am only a

little further advanced. Fortunately there are people at my disposal for such things and we have been working particularly hard at making it easier to book in to events and make payment online. What we would ask from you, having made it so much simpler, is please, please let us know as soon as possible if you intend to attend so that we can plan and provide better events. However far technology might have advanced, crystal balls do not work (yet) and booking 2 or 3 days before an event significantly compromises planning and our ability to provide the best event for all. Apologies if that sounds a bit disciplinarian; and I’m not even a school teacher! Floreat Rossallia! J. Ian Preston (J&P 66-73)
“That invitation to come and visit was genuine and heartfelt”
Branch Reports Oxford Dinner On Friday 8th May, Radley College once again hosted this year’s Oxford Dinner, with 28 ORs and their partners in attendance. Unfortunate chronological proximity to the Lakes dinner meant that we were unable to count the President amongst our number but we were lucky to have 3 representatives from Rossall, Elaine Purves, The Head, Henry Shepherd, Development Director and Sharon Potts, Alumni Officer. The guests very much enjoyed chatting to these members of the Rossall establishment and hearing news of the developments and initiatives taking place in FY7. Elaine delivered an informative speech bringing ORs up to date with goings on and after dinner there was some quality singing from the Radley Clerks. After that, ORs stood on their chairs, in time honoured fashion, and we all sang The Carmen, perhaps not as tunefully as the choristers but no less enthusiastically. To younger Old Rossallians flicking through the pages of this publication, a branch dinner may not have immediate appeal as a way of spending the first Friday night in May but I think I can speak for all those who attended when I say that there was a genuinely convivial atmosphere and there was much laughter and plenty of chat. Michael Guilbride particularly enjoyed meeting James Garnett for the first time in 55 years. They both reminisced about a boating expedition they had made on the Thames during the Easter holidays in 1960! Many thanks are due to various members of the Barlass family who worked furiously to help the event go with more than a little panache. The date has not yet been finalised for next year’s dinner but I very much expect it to be around the first or second Friday in May. Any ORs who might like to attend are very welcome to get in touch. Simon Barlass (sb@radley.org.uk) Lakeland Lunch May 9th saw some 60 Rossallians and friends gather at the Lindeth Howe Hotel near Windermere. This occasion was for the 25th time. The weather was a little ‘under’ but it did not dent the usual enthusiasm from those attending. The meal was up to its usual high standard with starters of watercress and Jersey new potato soup / treacle cured fillet of salmon /ham hock and guinea fowl terrine. This was followed by Sirloin of beef / Fillet of Morecambe Bay plaice / Ravioli. To complete the meal the options were Ice banana parfait / sticky toffee pudding/ British cheeses. Excellent. It was the end of an era. Cyril Fayle (who sadly is no longer with us), his wife Edna, together with Gill and George Scarlett, have run this popular gathering for 25 years and have decided to step down. They have done a wonderful job and our sincere thanks must go to them for all their hard work over the years. The baton for future years has passed on to Nick Hadfield and we wish him well for the future. Details of the 2016 event can be found at the back of this publication

Branch Reports Yorkshire Lunch A gathering of Rossallians and their guests met once again at the delightful setting of Ilkley Golf Club in June for the annual Yorkshire Lunch. The School was represented by Emma Sanderson, Sharon Potts and Henry Shepherd. Emma spoke enthusiastically to guests about her first year as Bursar and how Rossall had already had a major impact on both her and her family. We were delighted that Hazel Trapnell was also able to attend as well as Jim Cowpe, who has now retired from his role as Secretary of The Club. Guests joining us from the Fylde Coast arrived in style in the new school minibus- its maiden voyage over the border! Roger Walker addressed guests after lunch, informing them of the various functions he had been involved in over the past year. The lunch was concluded in the usual way with John Marshall leading The Carmen on his violin. It was a memorable and happy occasion and we hope that those unable to attend will join us in 2016. Attendees: Jim and Moira Cowpe, Peter and Peggy Crabtree, Sally Ellis, James and Glenny Garnett, Peter and Helen Hardern, Mike and Nadine Hannaby, David and Sue Holroyd, Richard Marriott, Philip Marsh, John Marshall, Sharon Potts, Ian Preston, Emma Sanderson, Henry Shepherd, Neville and Elizabeth Sheard, David and Elizabeth Towers, Hazel Trapnell and Roger and Chris Walker. OR Masonic Lodge Meeting This year’s ever popular Old Rossallian Lodge biennial festival took place on the 13th June and 40 members and guests attended the event. The day started with the lodge meeting, held at Fleetwood Masonic Hall, whilst ladies and non-masonic guests were invited to a presentation on the work of The Rossallian Foundation, followed by excellent music recital by Rossall pupils. The evening started with a service in Chapel, delivered by the School Chaplian, Etienne van Blerk, assisted by the school choir; they continue to wow with their talent. The Worshipful Master, Roger Eaves, and The Head, Elaine Purves, gave the readings. As the weather was pleasingly fine, we were then able to enjoy the champagne reception on the lawn of the Sumner Library. The climax of the evening was a splendid meal. We were all impressed by the quality of the food, especially the sticky toffee cheesecake. Our thanks to the Catering Department at Rossall. During the course of the evening we were entertained by various speeches whilst our pockets were emptied by talented raffle ticket sellers. All in all it was a lovely evening and a donation of £1200 was presented to the Rossall Foundation. The Lodge would like to take this opportunity to thank The Head, staff and pupils who helped to make the day a great success. If you are interested in joining the Old Rossallian Lodge contact details can be found at www.oldrossallianlodge.co.uk. We meet four times a year, three times in London and once on the Fylde Coast.

Sports Round-up Golf In June, 117 players representing 13 different Public Schools took advantage of warm sunshine at Little Aston Golf Club, Sutton Coldfield. The course was in exceptional condition having just hosted Regional qualifying for this year’s Open Championship. This is the 83rd year of this tournament in which each school enters a team of up to 10, with two rounds of foursomes under handicap. An excellent lunch is enjoyed in between the rounds with some reminiscing and good ‘banter’ for good measure! Paul Wiseman (Fn 76-86) enjoyed his debut this year and is already looking forward to next June’s competition. Rossall were placed mid-table above, amongst others, Shrewsbury and Oundle. All ORs are welcome and those wishing to represent Rossall should contact James Woods (Pe 83-88) at jmgwoods6@gmail.com

OR Weekend 2015
Yet another action-packed day awaited those who joined us for the annual OR Weekend in March. Over 200 ORs of all vintages took part in this year’s event and it was wonderful to welcome so many younger members of the Rossall community back to the School. Visitors were able to enjoy an exciting programme of activities including tours of the School, hockey tournaments, a WW1 exhibition, clay pigeon shooting, guest lectures, a Chapel service and the OR Dinner in Dining Hall in the evening. Formalities were also dealt with during the annual AGM which took place prior to the Chapel Service. Our thanks to all those who joined us for the occasion and also to the staff and students at Rossall School for the warmest of welcomes.

OR Dinner at Twickenham The long-awaited OR Dinner at Twickenham took place on a glorious evening in June. Guests travelled from many parts of the UK to join us for this prestigious event and we were delighted to welcome and re-connect with so many new faces, many of whom had not seen their old school friends for over 30 years. After taking in the spectacular views of the pitch during the Drinks Reception in the exclusive Members’ Lounge, guests were invited into the Spirit of Rugby Suite to enjoy a delicious four course meal. Large screens showing rugby photographs from Rossall taken over the past 60 years kept guests deep in conversation along with the anticipation of waiting to see if they could spot themselves on any of the images. One of our most prolific rugby stars, Peter Winterbottom, was unable to join us due to prior commitments. However, he sent a video message to wish everyone a wonderful evening, which was very well received. After formalities, including the singing of The Carmen, there was plenty of time for guests to mingle and reminisce about their days at Rossall. Our thanks to all who came and made the evening such a great success.

Old Rossallian of The Year Award Those of you who joined us at the OR Weekend earlier this year will know that the recipient of the Old Rossallian of The Year award was announced at the dinner. Nick Young (PE 82-89), our cross Channel solo swimmer, was nominated by a large number ORs for this outstanding achievement which took him 13 hours and 51 minutes to complete. He also raised over ÂŁ100,000, twice his original target. You may recall reading in the last edition of The Old Rossallian that Nick undertook this challenge in order to raise money to build a hydrotherapy pool for his niece Bel, who had been involved in an accident and is now paralyzed from the neck down. Unfortunately, Nick was unable to join us at the OR Weekend but came to visit Rossall in June to receive his award and talk to pupils about his swim, including the rigorous training regime he had undertaken for the previous 18 months. Nick was presented with his Old Rossallian of The Year trophy by Secretary of The Club, Ian Preston, during assembly in Chapel before heading over to the Museum Theatre for his seminars. Nick showed the pupils a short video telling his story as he had been followed by a BBC film crew during his swim. Afterwards, he was inundated with questions from inquisitive Rossallians. During his visit Nick was also delighted to take a dip in the warmth of the Rossall pool. Our congratulations once again to Nick on this remarkable achievement.
Details of how to nominate OR of The Year 2016 will be published in the January edition of The Old Rossallian.

Lest We Forget While travelling in Belgium, our party went to Ieper (Ypres) to see the Menin Gate. While there we were recommended to visit Saint George’s Memorial Church. It was a breathtaking, moving, memorable and humbling experience. However when I happened on a plaque to the memory of Old Rossallians the whole experience took on a different meaning. It makes one proud to be an Old Rossallian. How many other plaques are there around the world to the memory of Rossallians who have given their lives for their country? Peter Mason (R 58-62)
ANZAC Day OR Captain Tim Sindall (SE 55-59) wrote to us on his return from Sydney, where, with great good fortune, the rain that had drenched the city for several days beforehand ceased to pour down during the ANZAC Day Dawn Service. Tim writes:
Tim Sindall (pictured left) with three of his fellow Australian aviators
‘Sydney’s 2015 ANZAC Day Dawn Service was attended by more than 30,000 spectators, many of whom were in their late teens or early twenties, to attend this commemoration of the time 100 years earlier when Australia affirmed its nationhood on the shores of Gallipoli. Later in the morning, under warm autumn sunshine, I joined former fellow aviators as units of the Defence Force, Service Associations and public support organisations began their march past the Cenotaph. Even three hours after this had begun, crowds lining the route were still applauding vigorously and bands were still playing jaunty versions of ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
My journey began 50 years ago when, as an RAF pilot just six years after leaving Rossall, I began a voluntary exchange tour with the Royal Australian Air Force flying large transport aeroplanes all around South East Asia and the Commonwealth of Australia. I made many friends then, and this April spent time with several of them. But what a life I had in the 1960s, when the experience of travelling and of working alongside true professionals from another land helped shape my future life, building upon the academic and personal developmental foundations obtained during my time at Rossall!’ OR Merchandise Here are the latest additions to our OR merchandise, including a lapel badge, ladies and gents polo shirts and unisex hoodies. CCF in Lord Mayor’s Show Rossall School’s CCF has been invited to take part in this year’s Lord’s Mayor Show, taking place in London on Saturday 14th November. As the oldest CCF in the country, cadets will be taking part in the 800th Lord’s Mayor Show and a parading alongside samba dancers and military marching bands as it winds its way through the heart of London. The Lord Mayor’s Show dates back to 1215, when King John granted a charter allowing the citizens of London to elect their own mayor. Every year since, the newly elected Lord Mayor of London has travelled from the City of London to Westminster to pledge allegiance to the Crown. These days, the parade is more of a celebration than a show of loyalty. Around half a million people turn out to watch as the colourful procession travels across London. This year’s event will have added significance as it marks the 800th anniversary of the charter, so there will be plenty of special events and activities. We hope that many ORs will show their support at this event, whether in person or watching on TV.
RossHockey Exhibition Match Each year, the Club hosts a RossHockey Exhibition Match to explain to new Rossallians the rules of the game and play an exhibition match on the shore. Students benefit greatly from this event and it ensures that future generations will uphold one of Rossall’s greatest traditions. This year’s match will be taking part on Sunday 20th September at 12.30pm. Anyone wishing to come along, either as a player or spectator, should register their interest with Sharon Potts on 01253 774288 E: s.potts@rossall.org.uk

Bill Ashton Marks NYJO 50th Anniversary This year sees the 50th Anniversary of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, founded by Old Rossallian Bill Ashton OBE (Pe 50-55). It is one of Britain’s longest-running ensembles for young people under 25 playing big-band jazz. NYJO features 23 musicians and vocalists from around the country, most of whom go on to become professional musicians. Alumni include Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Gerard Presencer, Pete Long, Dennis and Winston Rollins and Amy Winehouse. Bill took time out of his busy schedule to tell us how Rossall was ‘instrumental’ in influencing his music career.
impresario and agent Paddy McKiernon, who represented the Merseysippi Saints band and the embryonic Chris Barber band. He sent me through some publicity material which I took to the Headmaster (Carl Young); he had no interest in music whatsoever but his wife was nice about it . I was encouraged to take the material to the person who put on the concerts, one Cloggy Clayton. He was not enthusiastic about the idea and said that the ORs would ‘turn in their graves if we had jazz in Big School.’ I was properly incredulous about the gyratory propensities of defunct ORs but then he persevered with, “Name me any school that Rossall plays at cricket that’s ever had a jazz concert.” This confused me somewhat but I was ready for him. “St Bees has had a jazz concert and they play a 78 of ‘When the Saints go Marching In’ on a wind-up gramophone before every home fixture.” Cloggy looked at me scornfully, “St Bees! St Bees? We only play them to make up the fixture list!” As Eric Morecambe once said, ‘There’s no answer to that.’
‘There was no orchestra or jazz band at Rossall but there were, of course, two choirs: the Chapel Choir and the Concert Choir. I auditioned for both but was turned down for Chapel Choir because a) I sang too loudly and b) I could not read music! However, I did get into the Concert Choir, whose repertoire consisted largely of Handel’s Messiah and Zadoc the Priest – volume here was much appreciated!
I bought my first Alto whilst doing my National Service from the Bandbox, Wolverhampton and when I got to RAF Hereford I asked the bandmaster if he would teach me to read music - “You’re in the band!” When I protested that I wouldn’t be much use to the band because I could not read he merely reiterated his first words and I learnt to read by watching the fingers of the person next to me going down.
The only thing resembling a band or orchestra was the CCF band, which was a brass band. But since I had borrowed by father’s saxophone, I was allowed to join it. In brass bands, all the instruments are either in B flat or E flat and my instrument, being a C melody saxophone, did not qualify. There were no written parts so it was here that I got my first experience of improvisation.
Once I got to Oxford I formed the Ambassadors Dance Band with Andrew Hayman and was soon out every evening playing for university society functions. Around 1960 I helped to form the O.U. Big Band which was to lead directly to my forming the London Schools Jazz Orchestra in 1965.’
My chief interest was jazz. My father had Jazz 78s dating back to the 1930s and somebody in my House owned a portable gramophone. We only had two 78s but we listened to these two records alternately in our darkened studies, staring at photos of our girlfriends illuminated by torchlight. The girlfriends were brought in for dancing classes on Wednesdays and Saturday evenings in Big School. I decided that what Rossall needed was a jazz concert, so I rang a well-known Manchester
We wish Bill and the NYJO many congratulations on this 50th Anniversary.

In Memoriam The Revd. Canon Roger MacPhee (R 56-61) spent his life in the teaching profession - both academically and spiritually. On leaving Rossall, he graduated from Leeds University with an Honours degree in Chemistry and taught at Launstone College, Devon before moving to Norfolk, where he became Head of Science at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham. In 1987 he was ordained and became Vicar of Knapton Church. He was subsequently appointed an Honorary Canon of Norwich Cathedral. He was born 9th May 1943 (the son of pilot officer, Ian M MacPhee, who was shot down over Berlin in April 1945) and he died on 11 January 2015 after a prolonged battle against cancer. Duncan MacPhee ( R 58-63) Dr Edward Martin Godfrey (R 50-55) was born in Rochdale in 1937. He was one of the last generations to be called up for National Service which included work in Germany with the Intelligence Corps. He then went on to Peterhouse where he read economics, graduating in 1961; the first step in a lifetime career in that discipline. His professional career started at the Economist Intelligence Unit before moving to Ghana as a Lecturer. In 1964 he joined the University of Manchester, working and undertaking research for his PhD, which he received in1971. He also worked in a number of institutions including the University of Nairobi and University of Sussex. Martin had 3 children with his first wife, Rosalind. He then met his second wife Rosemary, a senior UN official, in 1988 and accompanied her on many missions to Romania, New York, Cambodia and Russia. When Rosemary retired, they moved to County Mayo where they had designed and built their own house. NEW DIRECTION FOR THE
R O S S A L L F O U N D AT I O N Founded in 2005 The Rossall Foundation, a charity set up to support the school achieve its development aims, is undergoing some fundamental changes to the way it raises funds. The Foundation intends to concentrate on three specific projects:
ABOVE & BEYOND
ENABLING OPPORTUNITIES
An Annual Appeal to raise monies for items that will bring an immediate benefit to the School.
Expanding the Bursary funds to open up a Rossall education to a wider community.
C E L E B R AT I N G T H E PA S T, BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
The first project to be launched will be the Annual Appeal. During the Autumn, The Foundation will be asking for your support. A Wish List has been compiled, from staff and pupils’ recommendations, which will enable us to continue to deliver an excellent academic, sporting, and cultural education. We hope that many parents and Old Rossallians will support this appeal and help make a difference. Capital Projects, ensuring that Rossall can continue to improve and expand the School’s facilities.
