#RipCityRelay We had a blast in La Grande this month for Birnie Park’s grand opening event! Special thanks to La Grande Park and Recreation and Moda Health for letting us be a part of the 2014 Rip City Relay! We hope that the community enjoys their brand new Landscape Structures Inc. playground equipment!
Sensing the Elements October is Sensory Awareness Month and the SPD Foundation is celebrating the 6th annual celebration with the phrase “Use your Senses One Step at a Time”. Sensory processing helps us navigate and interact with the world around us. We may take that for granted, but it might be hard to understand what it would feel like to lose one of more of our senses. Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition that exists when sensory signals do not get organized into the appropriate responses. This neurological “traffic jam” can make it difficult for individuals to process and act on information received through their senses. This can cause certain challenges when performing even everyday tasks. Studies suggest that 1 in 20 children’s daily lives are affected by SPD, while 1 in every 6 children experience sensory symptoms that could be significant enough to affect certain aspects of everyday life functions. As previously stated, these symptoms can be problematic to children especially when playing, being active, and interacting with others. This is but one of many disorders that have created a need for more inclusive play environments. Landscape Structures Inc. and Vortex Aquatic Structures are great examples of playscape companies being proactive in designing structures and equipment that contribute to more inclusivity.

“You have to be able to assess danger. And that’s a skill that you have to learn.”(continued)
By providing additional sensory skills required for healthy development like motor planning and social imagination, children of all abilities can experience the same enjoyment across the board. This enjoyment can be felt through a few of the seven core senses; tactile, proprioception, vestibular, visual, and auditory. Ross Recreation is proud to continue to provide a sense of inclusivity within many of our past, present, and future projects. From incorporating stellar independent play elements for Lattice Educational Services or designing an incredible sprawling playground at Athens Downs Park, there are many opportunities for children and families to experience different sensory elements. From Roller Tables to OmniSpin Spinners, the play experience can vary for all children. We hope to further incorporate innovative designs that add challenging and engaging play elements to not only specific ages but abilities.
