The artificial grass industry has evolved greatly since the early days in the eighties when ballfields used bright green, abrasive turf. Nowadays, artificial turf comes in a variety of looks, types and applications, from landscaping to dog parks to play areas. Manufacturers have made great strides in the feel, durability, safety and innovation used in the manufacture of synthetic grass systems. The use of, and the underlying material, of the rubber infill in these turf systems has been a topic of interest lately. In many artificial turf systems, small rubber granules are used at the base of synthetic grass blades to hold the turf down and in place, while keeping blades more upright. This rubber material is commonly called infill and many times, the infill is made of post consumer recycled rubber. Recently, much has been made of the quality of the rubber used and the potential health concerns that can be caused from use, play and exposure to this recycled rubber. It is always of utmost importance to understand all risks associated with products we interact with. It is also important to understand the underlying facts and if available, the studies and research that provide greater information. On the topic of rubber infill, there have been many scientific studies on the impact on one’s health and to our knowledge, none have shown there to be long-term risks or health concerns. Industry leaders like ForeverLawn continue to support the use of infill when needed, but suggest the use of a quality infill from a well established supplier and manufacturer. Whether using infill or not, synthetic turf provides a wonderfully durable and safe surface for play, landscape and many other applications. For more information on the topic of infill, the following resources are available: - Synthetic Turf News - Synthetic Turf Council - Consumer Product Safety Commission
