My dear friends, Rotary leaders, and Rotaract leaders A new Rotary year is upon us, and let us say one final thank you to former President Barry Rassin for his outstanding leadership. Barry, we will miss you, but we know and appreciate that you will continue to lead Rotary in important ways for years to come. I have spoken for several months about how Rotary Connects the World, and the time has now arrived to put our words into action. We have an exciting year ahead of us, a year when we begin to implement the new Strategic Plan, what I call the Rotary Action Plan and when we will celebrate the 75 th Anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter. That anniversary will underscore the ties we have and goals we share with the United Nations. We will host five special events—UN Day in New York, three presidential conferences in Paris, Santiago, and Rome, and a final celebration just before the Convention in Honolulu. This will help us achieve the first Action Plan goal of increasing our impact by demonstrating that Rotary‘s influence in the world has only just begun. The second Action Plan goal is expanding our reach. To achieve that, we need to grow Rotary – reaching out to new members, engaging current members, and creating more alternatives for membership for the next generation of Rotarians. The third goal is enhanced participant engagement, making sure that Rotarians have experiences that are personally and professionally relevant and fulfilling. This is why I believe so strongly in building a more familyfriendly Rotary -- one that welcomes children to our activities and that is considerate of families in our scheduling. Let us recommit to putting the needs, expectations, and growth of our participants at the center of all we do. The final priority of our new Action Plan is increasing our ability to adapt. New approaches to our organizing principles do not threaten our sense of who we are. That is why I believe that Rotary must respect professional commitments and not require Rotary leadership to be a full-time job. We need to respect the time and responsibilities of young people who are building careers. Together, we will harness the power of connection just as our organization has been doing for more than 114 years. We have a long, proud heritage. And we will continue to thrive because we are not afraid of change.
I look forward to leading you in this important journey, as Rotary Connects the World! Yours in Rotary, Mark Daniel Maloney President, Rotary International 2019-2020

My dear Downtowners Best Wishes to all at Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown as you embark on this journey to start a brand new Rotary year. Coimbatore Downtown is a fairly young club. But has a legacy of many achievements and milestones made by your past leaders in this short span of time. We need to ensure that every year we lift the benchmarks even higher and set new standard for our successors to follow. As leaders when we get together under the Rotary club, each of us should multiply the quantum of good deeds which we wish to do as individuals. We are fortunate to have 2019-20 as our year of action. It is the year when Rotary celebrates the centennial year of its existence in India. 2020 is also an year which many great leaders from time immemorial have been talking about – a year when many of their visions of India were to fructify. Though we have progressed and advanced much as a nation, more needs to happen to catapult India into the top league. In such a situation, it is very unfortunate thay we do not have any formal education or sessions to mould our children into responsible citizens imbibed with great Indian values. As parents, As leaders, As Rotarians, we do have responsibility to inculcate such values in our kids and this thought found expression in the creation of signature project of our year Mission 2020 Responsible India. Please do your but in spreading goodness of this project through the schools that are willing to benefit from our plans and activities. Membership is what Rotary is all about. This is not just an avenue, but our top most priority. Without a comfortable strength of members, no club is sustainable and its running will not be feasible. Be it attendance, ideas or funds – membership is the key. As I have always been mentioning, please look for a quantum rise in membership and focus more on young members. Also invite new lady members. Both these will bring in a fresh lease of air in your club with vibrancy, diversity and good decorum. So please do all possible to attract good members and turn them into true Rotarians. By being in Rotary, this is our chance to script a legacy of service to mankind that we wish to be created for ourselves. Let us make Rotary connect the world in all aspects and let us be the connecting link in that . Every minute that we spend in Rotary must become enjoyable and gratifying. Let all our actions be focussed on such ideals that we make all of us proud together in this great organisation and make this world a better place to live in. I wish the newly installed President, Rtn Pon Rathnavel, Secretary Rtn E Mohanraj and all at Coimbatore Downtown a great meaningful mission 2020 ahead. Yours in Rotary, Rtn.R. Madhav Chandran District Governor RI District 3201

My Dear Rotarians, Rotaractors, Friends
I am happy to reach out to you all through our monthly newsletter DOWNTOWN JOURNEY as I embark on my journey as a President of our club, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown. I would begin this piece by thanking Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown. Knowing me and Downtown, I am sure I would not have survived in a club other than the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown think alone of becoming its President. Nonetheless, I shall strive to serve the club as a President as the way I served it as a member – wholeheartedly and without any expectations. Thinking on the lines of Rotary and leadership, I believe it is a story of 20 years. In 1999, I vehemently fought to become a President of a Rotaract Club. In 2009, I blatantly refused to become a leader of a Rotary District. In 2019, I had little thought on becoming a President of my Rotary Club. I am always a reluctant leader. There used to be a question in the DRR Candidate Caucus in Rotaract ―What is that you can accomplish only as a DRR and not as an ordinary Rotaractor?‖ . This question stayed on with me. In search of its answer, I believed that with some conviction and convincing, you can be as responsible and powerful as the leader. There is no much difference between a leader and a member. Now that I am a leader, I once again find no difference between Rtn. Pon. Rathnavel and President Rtn.Pon.Rathnavel. Some say that this is a zen mentality. But this is my den mentality worked well for me and hopefully will work in this year too. Like many of us, my understanding of leadership began with studying captains in cricket. I remember Mohammad Azharuddin sulking in an interview as a captain in 1999 saying ―The players are all adults. You cannot expect them to be told how to play. Twenty years on to an interview by smiling CSK captain MS Dhoni ―The players are all champions. The y need not be told how to play‖. I understood that leadership is ensuring that the team turns up and that they need not be told. Our DG Rtn.Madhav Chandran has very high but very clear goals for our District. I am amazed by his passion, action and doing things differently and big. He is an example for the quote ―Don‘t satisfy them. Delight them‖. I am looking forward to play a part in his big mission 2020. I have my own learnings from our Past Presidents. I would like to think big like Santhosh Anna, think together like Godwin Anna, think easy like Prakash Anna, think clearly like Vijayraghavan, think positive like NSR Anna, think futuristically like Sumit ji and think multi tasking like Doctor sir. Of course, I would keep thinking like our GSR Thiyagu Machaan. At this juncture I would like to remember late Rtn. Dr. Usha Mehta for treating with care this Interactor in 1996 when I walked into a wrong Rotary meeting and showing me what Rotary is. I remember Rtn.Vijayraghavan and Rtn.Thiagarajan, my go to people in case of anything concerned with Rotary. I thank all our club members, Anns and Annettes for showing unstinted support in the past few months and particularly during our Installation. I am blessed with a wonderful team of Rotarians who are showing extra care and support. With that extra, I think we would become extra ordinary this year. Yours in Rotary, Rtn.Pon. Rathnavel President, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown

Club Service Membership Development was at an all time high for Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown. Our club started with 42 members and ended with 52 members with a rise of 25% in membership, the highest in our club history
Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown successfully adopted a new meeting location in The Coimbatore Club. The club also adopted its change to meet once in a fortnight instead of a week. The new format for meeting fellowship helped us in reducing and streamlining club expenses and helped in steering the club towards clarity and competence. Two well organised bachelor trips – one North to Anaikatti and the other south to Pollachi are still lingering in the minds of the Rotarians. Installation and GOV are two of our biggest events and both were conducted with great elan. Our Christmas Get Together was equally a crowd puller and helped us enjoy Rotary with family. Rtn. Dr.Arshad hosted a family get together to commemorate the new Rotary year.
Our regular event RDL was a grand success. The event was celebrated in style and yet again recorded maximum participation and partnership among the Downtowners. We started FUNTASY league last year with DIA for IPL. With NAFISA for World Cup Football, RIA for RDL, DISHA for IPL and RAKUL for World Cup Cricket, we had a lot of fun playing seers with peers in our Club. Speaker Meetings are always fun for Rotarians. We had a variety of speakers on different topics - Rtn.Prakash Angappan on Tunnel Rats, Rtn.Inthikab Alam on Coimbatore, Rtn. Vijayakumar on 1971 War, Ms.Ritesha Niveda on Multi Tasking for Women and Ms. Deepthi Kapil on Meaning of Life to mention a few were very well received by the club. Our Club Assemblies and Board Meetings were done in an impeccable manner.

Community Service Like every year, we started our community service this year with KANYADHAN to Baby Hareshnee. This project costing us Rs.30000 per annum for 12 years will have a great impact on the life of Baby Hareshnee. Kerala Floods was a big disaster that needed quick response and sustained rehabilitation . Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown made a significant contribution for the combined efforts of the Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore. Ably headed by our President, Rtn.Dr.Krishnananda, we were there in the field contributing to the response by providing relief materials as well as medical treatment. Our annual eye care programme NETHRA was successfully completed with 12 eye camps. In addition, we added WE CARE, dental camps for the elderly and we successfully completed 4 camps. Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown hogged the limelight for setting up Breastfeeding Pods at Coimbatore Junction Railway Station and Podanur Railway Station to facilitate breast feeding. We lead the PEDAL 4 Clean India, a cycle rally around our district for creating awareness on cleanliness and end polio. The rally helped us create a wave of awareness and the conduct of the event helped us derive enormous satisfaction.
Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown continued to make valuable contributions and donations to people in need of educational assistance, sports scholarships and medical aids. More than 3 lakh rupees were provided for beneficiaries in the Rotary year 2018-19. Our Governor wanted a million trees. Our club planted 100 trees and gave 50000 trees towards plantation. We made donation to the needy in case of food and blood. We won many smiles for our school donation and hospital donation projects.

Vocational Service GURUVANDANAM, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown’s Annual Teacher Recognition Programme and iRISE, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown’s Exemplary Women Recognition programme were conducted in a meaningful and memorable manner. We received great appreciation for both these recognition programmes. We undertook Vocational Visits to M/s Chendur Fabs to understand Pre Fabrication, to M/s Adithya Aqua Tech to understand water treatment and to M/s Srinivasan Areca Plates to understand manufacturing of areca plates. Our Vocational Training Centre at M/s Godwin Constructions was inaugurated for the year in July 2018 and trained 16 civil engineering students. We had classification talks by our members Rtn.P.Shanmuga Prakash and Rtn.E.Mohanraj that helped us understand the worlds of automobiles and banking in a better manner.
Youth Service Our Rotaract Clubs at KV Institute of Management and Sankara College of Science and Commerce and our Interact Club at KMM Matriculation school continued to make us proud by their yeoman services. We had conducted RYLA for our Interactors of KMM Matriculation School. We also supported Rotaract District Organisation by providing sponsors for their major events. We also contributed to conduct of competitions in schools.
International Service Our Rotarians visited 3 clubs and exchanged flags. Our club took active part in Polio NID programme. We contributed the highest to the Rotary Foundation in our club history. Our club was represented by Rtn.A.Godwin Maria Visuvasam at the RI Convention.

SANTHOSHAM (HAPPINESS) is one half strength of any human being, Being Happy and Spreading Happiness has become a very tough challenge in the ever changing world. In this stead, Martin Seligman, one of the founders of positive psychology, developed a five core element of psychological well-being and happiness. Seligman believes that these five elements can help people work towards a life of fulfillment, happiness, and meaning. Institutions can also use this model to develop programs that help people discover and use new cognitive and emotional tools. This theory is called as PERMA Theory.
P – Positive Emotion This element is, perhaps, the most obvious connection to happiness. Focusing on positive emotions is more than smiling: it is the ability to remain optimistic and view one‘s past, present, and future from a constructive perspective. A positive view can help in relationships and work, and inspire others to be more creative and take more chances. In everyone‘s life, there are highs and lows; focusing on ―the lows‖ does increase your chances of developing depression, although the equation for depression is very complicated. Regardless, there are many health benefits to optimism and positivity. In this stead, it is very important to distinguish between pleasure and enjoyment. Pleasure is connected to satisfying bodily needs for survival, such as thirst, hunger, and sleep. Whereas enjoyment comes from intellectual stimulation and creativity. When a child completes a complex lego car that requires their concentration, for example, they might beam with joy and satisfaction from their work. This type of positive emotion is crucial. It can help people enjoys the daily tasks in their lives and persevere with challenges they will face by remaining optimistic about eventual outcomes. E – Engagement Activities that meet our need for engagement flood the body with positive neurotransmitters and hormones that elevate one‘s sense of well-being. This engagement helps us remain present, as well as synthesize the activities where we find calm, focus, and joy. People find enjoyment in different things, whether it‘s playing an instrument, playing a sport, dancing, working on an interesting project at work or even just a hobby. When time truly ―flies by‖ during an activity, it is likely because the people involved were experiencing this sense of engagement. We all need something in our lives that absorbs us into the current moment, creating a ‗flow‘ of blissful immersion into the task or activity. This type of ‗flow‘ of engagement stretches our intelligence, skills, and emotional capabilities.
9
R – Relationships Relationships and social connections are crucial to meaningful lives.. Too often, the pursuit of happiness has this western bias of ―individuality‖ where each person steers their personal happiness ship to shore. This is not realistic. We are social animals who are hard-wired to bond and depend on other humans. Hence, the basic need for healthy relationships. We thrive on connections that promote love, intimacy, and a strong emotional and physical interaction with other humans. Positive relationships with one‘s parents, siblings, peers, coworkers, and friends is a key ingredient to overall joy. Strong relationships also provide support in difficult times that require resilience. In an interview with Dr. Mitch Printein‘s about his course on the psychology of popularity, Printein explained the research on pain centers in the human brain. Basically, our pain centers become activated when we are at risk of isolation. From an evolutionary perspective, isolation is the worse thing we could do for survival. These activation centers are like fire alarms in the body, discouraging people to continue feeling this pain, and ideally, reconnect socially with someone or a group. We need, neurologically, to know that we belong to a group; it helps us feel safe and valued, and has for millions of years. M – Meaning Having an answer as to ―why are we on this earth?‖ is a key ingredient that can drive us towards fulfillment. Religion and spirituality provide many people with meaning, as can working for a good company, raising children, volunteering for a greater cause, and expressing ourselves creatively. Unfortunately, the media worships glamour and the pursuit of material wealth, impacting many people to feel like money is the gateway to happiness. While we do need money to pay for basic needs, once those basic needs are met and financial stress is not an issue, money is not what provides people with happiness. Understanding the impact of your work and why you chose to ―show up at the office‖ may help you enjoy the tasks and become more satisfied with what you do. Whether you work in an office or not, think of what you spend most of your time doing. What does that activity provide you with? Check out Itai Ivtzan‘s Awareness-Meaning Therapy if you want more resources on this weighty aspect of happiness. His video in that link on ―Awareness is Freedom‖ has provided inspiration to reflect and change for thousands of people. A – Accomplishments Having goals and ambition in life can help us to achieve things that can give us a sense of accomplishment. You should make realistic goals that can be met and just putting in the effort to achieving those goals can already give you a sense of satisfaction when you finally achieve those goals a sense of pride and fulfillment will be reached. Having accomplishments in life is important to push ourselves to thrive and flourish. How to Apply the PERMA Model in Your Life? Being aware of the PERMA model might help you consider the meaning and fulfillment to your life. The next step is to integrate this model with your daily life. As a start, we recommend you refer to the 5 elements of the model often. Find the things that make you happy and can make you fully engaged. Focus on your relationships with your family and friends, and find ways to connect with others, even if it does not come naturally to you at first. Find the meaning to your life and what gives you a sense of purpose. It‘s different for everyone. Is ROTARY a PERMA Model? The more we read about the PERMA Model, the more we are reminded about our Rotary. If you are a Rotarian and if you had read the PERMA Model, do you agree that ROTARY is a PERMA model?

FUNTASY – A DOWNTOWN PROJECT DIA, NAFISA, RIYA, DISHA, RAKUL – Do these names ring a bell? All these names would have brought a smile to the Downtowners. FUNTASY is a fantasy league competition conducted by Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown for our fellow Downtowners in the backdrop of a major sporting event. This event based on predicting the winners and performers helps to keep us alive, kicking and together. The predictions lead to heavy competition and light conversations. We started with DIA (Downtown IPL Analyst) based on IPL 2018. NAFISA (Namma FIFA Super Analyst) served us watching FIFA World Cup 2018 together. A last minute idea saw us conduct RIYA (RDL In Yeoman Analyst) for our own Rotary Downtown League. DISHA (Downtown‘s IPL Super Hope Analyst) helped us follow IPL 2019 together. Our fifth one RAKUL (Rotarian Analysing Kohli‘s Uitimate Leadership) is our Funtasy for World Cup Cricket 2019. Rtn.Arun Nagappan is the Chairman of FUNTASY. Rtn.Pon.Rathnavel was the curator for all the 5 Funtasy Leagues. Rtn.Sumit Kumar Prasad enjoys unstinted success in the FUNTASY leagues. He was the winner of DIA, NAFISA and DISHA. Rtn.Godwin and Rtn.Vignesh shared the honours for RIYA. RAKUL will throw a winner eventually on June 14. Our next FUNTASY will be based on TNPL 2019.
HISTOROTARIAN – HOWS THE JOSH(I)? Rtn.Srinivasan Joshi, District Coordinator for Public Image has always made a clarion call for clubs, regions and districts to have historians to document the good work done by Rotary. Rtn.Joshi wanted clubs to preserve their newsletters, news clippings, GOV reports, invitations etc and believes that they may all garner immense historic value in the future. Rtn.Joshi also emphasised that this is the right time for Rotary to appoint regional historians for the 4 regions of our district – Coimbatore, Palghat-Thrissur, Muvattupuzha and Cochin. Our Charter Secretary, Rtn.V.Vinod Kumar has always insisted that we need to have a fool proof archiving system and that anyone who wants to know the achievements of yesteryears should have easy and proper access to the same. Thinking on these two lines, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown has requested Rtn.V.Vinod Kumar to be the Historotarian of the club (the historian among Rotarians) and help to create a system for documenting the legacy of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown.
ROTARY WISDOM I would always remember three learnings in Rotary. First was from PDG Rtn.Rajamani when I was a Rotaract President ―A good President should knows the bylaws. The best President should knows how to not use it‖. Second from a good friend and Rotary Peace Scholar Rukmini Iyer ―The biggest contribution of Rotary to humanity is enabling a tryst with leadership for nearly 35000 people every year. Third was from Rtn.Saba Singaram ―In Rotary, fellowship happens through many means from whiskey to cricket. But the best fellowship always happens over a service project. - Rtn. Pon.Rathnavel, President

COROLLARY Coimbatore Metropolis & Coimbatore South were twins chartered on the same day in 1985. 27 years later, Coimbatore Ikons & Coimbatore Downtown was chartered on the same day in 2012. 5 Clubs were formed in the year 2007-08 and that year holds the record of the largest number of clubs in a Rotary year. 22 years between Coimbatore and Coimbatore West is the longest term between two clubs while 5 days is the shortest term between clubs, Coimbatore Town and Coimbatore Vadavalli. A club named Rotary Club of Coimbatore Titans was started on 14 May 2009 and was later terminated on June 26 2012. 13 Rotary Clubs were established in the last century/millennium while this century has already seen 25 Rotary clubs
