Casa Girasole, otherwise known as Il Girasole, is a mid-rise housing facility built by the same architect who created works such as the Foro Italico, the residential quarters for the 1960 Rome Olympics, and the Watergate hotel. Its name means “The Sunflower” which is derived from the big windows on the south facing side. The windows have large shades which can be adjusted per apartment to block out the incoming light. These blinds create an ever-changing and versatile façade allowing the building to be dynamic and not commonplace. The extensions on the bedrooms act as the petals on the sunflower, reaching out to the southern sun and permitting light to come into the side rooms as well. This building is arranged to have two three-bedroom flats on each floor anchored by a central stair and atrium space. Each flat is arranged so that there is room and access for live-in staff separate from the main residents. The atrium on the building is an extension of the slit in the South façade. This space leads down to the first floor where there is a central elevated garden and a variety of shops. Built in a district of speculative apartment buildings, the Casa Girasole stands out because of its unique shape and juxtaposition of grid and organic form.
