TECHNIQUE
Next to having the proper EQUIPMENT, technique is the most important thing in boxing Standing: Present a shoulder to your target. Your leading shoulder is the opposite of your preferred hand. Jab: Your fist should be held in relaxed, palms-in, position. The jab is thrown directly from the chin with your leading hand. Straight right: A twisted torso and a pivoting right foot power the straight right. It should be thrown straight from the chin without a wind up. Hook: The elbow is brought up... parallel to the floor, so the arm forms a sort of hook. At the same time the fist should in memory of be rotated with the palm DIEGO CORRALES down. The most amazing thing about Bernard Hopkins is his incredible stamina. Most middleweights weigh above or around the light heavyweight limit when not in training. They continue to cycle their training schedule and body weight in what can be a deteriorating process for an aging pugilist. Hopkins, on the other hand, began his career at 177 pounds and lost that fight because of his lack of conditioning. That has also transformed him—resulting in an unending and manic pursuit to be the greatestconditioned athlete in boxing. Now over 40 years old, Hopkins is closing out on a brilliant boxing career that spans more than 17 years. We fight fans are lucky to have been witness to the greatness that is Bernard Hopkins.
Marciano learned early that he had shortcomings to overcome. His short reach, his height, his lack of natural boxing ability all put him at a disadvantage. But he had strength and courage. And with enough hard training, he added stamina. Rocky was disqualified in his first amateur fight, with Henry Lester, when he became totally exhausted and used a knee to keep Lester off him. He was smoking heavily at the time, eating all the wrong foods, and hadn’t trained at all. The crowd booed him, and even his younger brother Sonny was disappointed in him. He told Sonny, “If I ever get into the ring again, you can bet I won’t be out of condition.” It was a promise he kept through 49 pro fights.
When Floyd Mayweather Jr. is in the gym training, he attacks the task with a rare intensity. The five-time world champion trains at only one speed—full—and is immune to exhaustion. During training camp he works out up to four times daily—hard. For Mayweather, training is an enduring family affair. His father, Mayweather Sr. (former contender) was taking li’l Floyd to the gym as an infant in his stroller. For Floyd Mayweather’s Super Fight with super welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya this past May, he moved up a weight class from 147 to 154, which can be trying for a fighter. But after two months in camp, Floyd came into the fight bigger, stronger, and as quick as ever to win a split decision.
Sugar Ray Robinson is generally regarded as the greatest boxer of all time. Robinson was a fluid fighter who possessed a quick jab, knockout power, and was always in great shape. Robinson commented that once a fighter has trained to a certain level, their techniques and responses become almost reflexive. “You don’t think. It’s all instinct. If you stop to think, you’re gone.” Sugar’s boxing instinct has been unmatched. Tales from the gym say, “Whenever Robinson skipped rope or hit the speed bag, everybody stopped what they were doing, cleared the floor and crowded around. It was like watching Fred Astaire. He did everything with such elegance, and his combinations were the envy of everybody."
COMBINATIONS
A good boxing offense includes an arsenal of punches that can be effectively thrown in combination with one another. Punches are assigned numbers in combinations— uJab >vStraight right >wLeft hook >xRight hook >yLeft Uppercut. } u-uand u-u-u: The double jab and the triple jab. u-v: The jab followed by a straight right. Your goal should be to land a clean jab at your opponent’s head to lift the chin. u-v-w: Just add the left hook to the 1-2 combo. v-w-v: Power-punching combos. oxing is a grueling sport, and in order to make it to the late rounds, a fighter must be in shape. A fighter is in his peak condition for the night when the first bell rings. Three minutes later he gets his first rest. Then it’s an alternating cycle of three minutes of exertion followed by that precious 60 seconds to try to recover. >>

With every round more energy is spent and less is recovered until a fighter is pushed to the very limit. Many lack the stamina to make the long fight. But Edgar Santana, The Pride of Spanish Harlem and junior welterweight contender, along with conditioning coach Lawson Harris believe they have the remedy.

always understood Pilates to be for girls. But it turns out that Joseph Pilates, inventor of Pilates, was a fighter. And so, it makes sense that in addition to a more traditional boxing workout, Edgar Santana trains in Pilates at Fitness Guru (operated by Harris) across the hall from the renowned Gleason’s Gym in Dumbo, N.Y.C. Emanuel Steward is perhaps the most successful boxing trainer of all time. He
founded the legendary Kronk Gym in Detroit where he prepared Tyrell Biggs, Frank Tate, Mark Breland, Jerry Page, Pernell Whitaker, and Steve McCrory to win gold at the 1984 Olympics. Emanuel has trained 32 world champions, including Jermain Taylor, Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, and the Klitschko brothers. © At age of 17, Steward as an amateur won the 1963 National Golden Gloves and led Detroit to its first team title in 24 years. After falling short in finding acceptable management, he left boxing to work, only to come back to training in the early ’70s. © Steward is most recently credited with putting the sledge back into current heavyweight champion, Wladimir “Dr. Steel Hammer” Klitschko, who prior to Steward’s arrival was labeled as unfit and fragile. “I have unbelievable faith in myself,” says Steward. “I had that when I was fighting myself, and I have that same confidence today. If a fighter has any natural talent and will work with me, I feel like I can do a good job.”

Eddie Futch (August 9, 1911–October 10, 2001) trained a number of legendary
champions. The incredible list includes Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Larry Holmes, and Trevor Berbick, four of the five men to defeat Muhammad Ali. © In 1932, Futch won the Detroit Athletic Association Lightweight Championship, and in 1933, he won the Detroit Golden Gloves Championship. He trained at the same gym as Joe Louis, the Brewster Recreation Center Gym, and often sparred with the future champion. © A heart murmur prevented Futch from turning professional, and he began training boxers. His first world champion was Don Jordan, who won the world welterweight championship in 1958. Other world champions Futch worked in the corner with included Bob Foster, Alexis Arguello, Michael Spinks, Marlon Starling, and Riddick Bowe. 14

aged and trained the careers of Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres, and Mike Tyson. © Under D’Amato’s training, Floyd Patterson captured the Olympic middleweight gold medal in the 1952 Helsinki games. D’Amato then guided Patterson to becoming a heavyweight and fighting for the title vacated by the legendary Rocky Marciano. In an elimination bout against Archie Moore, D’Amato’s fighter won the heavyweight championship of the world. © Jose Torres won the light heavyweight championship of the world. After Patterson and Torres’s careers had ended, D’Amato moved to Catskill, New York, where he opened a gym. It was there that he began to work with the future heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. D’Amato died shortly before Tyson became the youngest world heavyweight titleholder in history. 15

Angelo Dundee (born 1923) has worked with 15 world boxing champions, including-
Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jose Napoles, George Foreman, Jimmy Ellis, Carmen Basilio and Luis Rodriguez. © This Philadelphia native learned the intricacies of the sweet science while watching the great trainers ply their trade at Stillman’s Gym in New York in the late 1940s. © The first world champion he worked with was Hall-of-Famer Carmen Basilio, who held the welterweight and middleweight crowns. Dundee, along with his brother Chris, a Hall of Fame promoter, eventually relocated to Miami Beach and was the chief trainer at the world-renowned Fifth Street Gym. © In 1960, Dundee was hired to train Muhammad Ali and he remained in Ali’s corner until his fight with Larry Holmes. Dundee, a quick thinker and master motivator in the corner, helped Ali get through some of his toughest fights. © In 1976, Dundee was asked to help shape the career of Sugar Ray Leonard. Again, Dundee was instrumental in building a boxing legend and Hall-of-Famer. Few boxing fans could ever forget his “You’re blowing it, son” pep talk to Leonard just before he knocked out Thomas Hearns to unify the welterweight crown.

Warm up: Start with 5 minutes of jump roping. Round 1 “3 minutes”: Ok, this is the first round. We’re going to just get the feel of the bag. Work around the bag using the u-u and u-u-u combinations. [Rest “1 minute”]. Round 2 “3 minutes”: Are you tired yet? Now start using the u-v combo. When you hit the bag using your straight right you should here the back go WAP! [Rest 2 “1 minute”]. Round 3 “3 minutes”: Ok you should really be sweating now. You should be moving at all times. Start with the u-v-w. The left hook maybe hard to do at first, but stick with it. [Rest 3 “1 minute”]. If you’re not sweating and your heart beat isn’t up, then you’re not moving. Remember you should be moving when you’re not punching. Round 4 “3 minute”: v-w-v. Ok, start using this combination. [Rest 4 “1 minute”]. Anytime you are resting you should be using the time to drink some water. Round 5 “3 Minutes”: Ok, this is the last round. Give it your all! Use the w-v-w combo. Cool down: 5 minutes of jump rope.
