S TAR Q&A

Television star, singer and father of five Rob Brydon, 54, talks about his life & career ahead of his new Songs & Stories tour

Q.

You’ve just had your photoshoot; looking good! “Yes, looking rather lovely in a suit and freshly pressed shirt; a glorious sight! As you know, I’m an elegant man. I encapsulate Daniel Craig… after he’s been savagely beaten.”

Q. You’ve won gongs at the British Comedy Awards and Royal Television Society… Why are you yearning to go back to live? “Live comedy is such a buzz. Sometimes you stand on stage thinking, ‘Good God! these people have all gone to the trouble of paying a babysitter.’ That’s a special feeling. You don’t choose that life – it’s almost a calling. The more you get used to it, the more it becomes your norm. I like to entertain people. It’s a privilege.” Q. Is Songs & Stories a risky business? “It’s a deliberate risk. I want to go outside my comfort zone. There are so many media outlets nowadays. Some people might only know me from Gavin and Stacey or Would I Lie To You? Those people often say to me, ‘I didn’t know you could sing’, and yet I‘ve sung a lot. I recently went to see Jeff Goldblum play with his band. It was liberating and wonderful.”

I want to go outside my comfort zone

Q. When did you discover you had such a beautiful singing voice? “I was 16 and starting to get interested in girls, but always pining from afar. In my teens I lived in Porthcawl, a coastal town in Wales, and all the cool boys were surfers. I wasn’t a surfer (I had a go once, but hurt my knee). I didn’t drink. My friends would all drink on a Friday and Saturday, and on a Tuesday and Wednesday, too, just for good measure. That meant they lost their fear of rejection. Unfortunately, I never lost that fear. But I knew I was funny and could make girls laugh. At the time, Joe Jackson’s song Is She Really Going Out with Him? was a big hit, and I sing a bit of that in the show, by way of illustration.”

Brydon

time

Q. So music was your ticket to cool? “My musical taste was never cool. I loved David Bowie and The Police, but also Shakin’ Stevens and Cliff Richard.” Q. What do you hope the audience take from this show? “I hope people will come out happier. As a performer in the last few years, you can feel people just want to escape. But of course, if the box office is still open, a percentage of the audience will be looking for a refund, I don’t doubt that.”  The Songs & Stories tour visits Guildford’s G Live and Woking’s New Victoria Theatre in March. www.robbrydon.live 12 | DECEMBER 2019

LOCAL LIFE

High on the Hogs

The Hogs Back Brewery team are gearing up for Christmas, brewing around the clock for busy pubs and opening their doors for extra tours and Christmas shoppers.

H

ogs Back Brewery has been brewing its awardwinning ales, using locally grown hops, since 1992.

It is probably best known for its flagship ale, TEA (Traditional English Ale) and also produces a range of seasonal ales, including Advent Ale as well as refreshing colder products such as Hogstar Lager, Hazy Hog Cider and Hog IPA.

Each year, more than 6,000 people go on their famous (or should that be infamous?) brewery tours where you can learn about the brewing operation, sample a generous range of beers, see the 8½ acre hop garden and finish with a visit to the Brewery Shop and Bar. The shop stocks Hogs Back’s bottled ales and gifts plus up to 300 beers from the UK and around

The brewery has recently undergone a big change on site by moving its hop garden to a new site behind the brewery and from 2020 will be able to grow 50% of the hops they use in their brews, significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

You can also join the brewery’s exclusive members club, the Tongham TEA Club for year round discounts and invites to private tours and tasting events. If you are hosting Christmas this year, then you can treat your guests to brewery-fresh draught beer, poured directly from the tank. The shop’s knowledgeable staff can help choose the beer that’s right for you and show you how to set up a cask at home if you really want to impress your friends and family. NATI VITY

A Wintershall tale... Experience the magic of the Christmas story live at The Wintershall Nativity Play, from Wednesday 18th to Sunday 22nd December.

T

he critically acclaimed production is presented both outdoors in the rolling landscape of the Wintershall Estate as well as inside the intimate surroundings of Holly Barn. 50 volunteer actors in biblical costumes, alongside a cast of sheep, donkeys, horses and a sheepdog, take the audience on foot from the open air into the atmospheric, candle-lit barn, as the story of how Jesus changed the world unfolds with songs and music and joyful carolling. The Nativity has become a much-anticipated fixture of the Christmas season, performed by Wintershall, producers of the famous Passion of Jesus which plays to an audience of over 20,000 people each Easter in Trafalgar Square. Enjoy this timeless festive experience with friends and family as the real story of Christmas is brought to life. Visitors are encouraged to wrap up warmly and mince pies and hot drinks will be available before and after the performance. Wintershall first performed The Nativity in 1989, with a cast headed by Peter and Ann Hutley and their family on their beautiful farm, the Wintershall Estate, an area of extraordinary 26 | DECEMBER 2019

natural beauty in the Surrey Hills. The cows were evicted from the barn for a night and a handful of people came to see the makeshift production. One of the wise men found himself wearing Ann’s fur hat and their pregnant daughter-in-law sat on a bale of hay with a torch to light the action. Now Holly Barn is a licensed theatre and 6,000 visitors come to see the 90-minute nativity every year, with tickets selling out for the last two years. It featured on the BBC’s Songs of Praise in 1996 and again in 2004. In 2013, the nativity was performed in the BBC’s Piazza in London to critical acclaim. The Wintershall Nativity Play will be performed on 18th December at 1pm & 4.30pm, 19th & 20th December at 4.30pm and 7pm, 21st December at 11am, 2pm & 5pm and 22nd December at 2pm and 5pm. Performances are 90 minutes long and there is free parking. Tickets £9-£20 with a family ticket (two adults, two children) £50 & £55. Not advised for under 5s. Book early to secure your preferred date and time. To book please call 01793 418299 or visit www. wintershall.org.uk

BOOKS

Pony tale

We catch up with local mum & grandma Rose Snape who has just published a lovely children’s book – with the help of illustrator Alison Lingley – inspired by her pony

S

ince retiring and moving to Surrey, Rose was thrilled to start riding again after a 40-year gap. “When a little horse called Woody was given to me four years ago, my great love of all things horsey was reawakened,” she says. “The joy of spending time with my quirky, cheeky little pony led me to writing stories about him for young children.” Rose was a social worker for 20 years in London, and worked for part of that time at Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children. Since retiring, she has been a buddy for older people in care homes, trained and worked as Samaritan, and been a school governor.

One of the greatest pleasures in life is my pony

Woody Moves Home is her first book about the irrepressible Woody... “but hopefully not the last! Bringing my pony to life for children was always going to be a daunting task, but one I loved.” Rose, who lives in Wonersh and is married to Mike, is mum to Cordelia and Freddy and a delighted 30 | DECEMBER 2019

grandmother to Sophie and Isabelle. She is glad to have achieved her dream of securing the highly regarded illustrator Alison Lingley, whose hand-painted cards and pictures are sold all over Surrey, after she agreed to join forces for the book. “Working with Alison has been a delight,” Rose adds. “Her illustrations bring such life and personality to the animals and the drawings of Woody, in particular, are better than I could ever have hoped.” The real Woody is now happily retired. “One of the great pleasures in my life now is keeping my pony at a lovely livery yard in the Surrey Hills,” says Rose, “where I get to hack in some of the most beautiful countryside in England. I’m also involved in the support and care of older carers like myself who care at home for their adult child with learning disabilities and autism.” Search for “WoodyHorse” on Facebook or visit www.Woodythehorse.com to find out more and buy your copy. £7.99, ISBN 978-1-9162528-0-6.

Win! A state-of-the-art Hawker Harrier II Avi-8 watch with super luminova face and solid steel casing

In the annals of aviation history, perhaps no fighter plane stirred as much controversy and technological wonder as the Hawker Harrier ‘JumpJet’, which flew for the Royal Air Force and US Air Force during the latter part of the 20th century. This incredible aircraft, powered by the framed Rolls Royce Pegasus engines then, provides the inspiration for the newest collection of timepieces from Avi-8. Holly is a very forgiving plant - It withstands poor soils, is drought tolerant and can withstand temperatures as low as 20°. This hardy profile makes it perfect for gardens. Once established, it needs very little care to look beautiful year-round. 2. Birds & bees love holly - As well as hungry winter birds, holly is a wonderful source of food for bees when in flower. 3. Holly frequently features in religion and folklore - It’s been associated with Christianity since medieval times. Druids would wear holly in their hair as protection against evil spirits, and Harry Potter’s wand is made with holly. 4. Holly makes an excellent hedge - Robust, evergreen and needs little care. The prickly leaves are a deterrent to intruders, so consider planting a holly bush beneath easily accessible windows. 5. Hollies have both male and female plants - Only female plants bear berries. If you’re planting in an area with few holly bushes, consider planting a male plant at the same time to pollinate. Ask about buying holly plants with both male and female plants grafted onto the same rootstock.

6. Prune hollies early in the year - Collect your Christmas holly before new growth begins. As trimming holly bushes is such a prickly job, why not call in the professionals from Brackendale to trim your hedge, bushes or trees into shape. 7. Not all hollies are evergreen - English holly (Ilex aquifolium) is the traditional Christmas one but there are hundreds of varieties. Call the team at Brackendale Tree Care to help you choose the best holly for your garden and then professionally plant your plants of choice for you.

I

find it quite frustrating that nuts in shells are only available at Christmas as I like to use them all year round. So I decided to find out why nuts in shells are traditionally served at Christmas in a bowl on a table with nutcrackers! In ancient Rome nuts were common gifts which were especially popular with children who valued them as toys as well as food. Small boys enjoyed playing marbles with them! They could be covered in gold as adult gifts and used as decorations. Each nut had a special significance: Hazelnuts were thought to prevent famine, as they had once done during a Hannibal siege. Walnuts were supposed to bring abundance and prosperity and were even capable of acting as an antidote to poison. Almonds were believed to offer a much-needed protection against the effects of heavy drinking! Nuts in the garden Hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds can all be grown successfully in our gardens and there are plantations supplying British produce year round! Cathie’s Gardening School Services A personalised and unique professional service tailored to your gardening requirements. 1.Horticultural consultancy teaching you in your own garden. EXTENSIONS | RENOVATIONS | LOFTS & BASEMENTS

PAINTING & DECORATING | BATHROOMS & KITCHENS We met Justin to entirely refurbish our 5-bedroom house including staircase, structural “work, flooring, bathrooms etc. He was from the start very reassuring and took time to listen to us about our project and our vision, which he supplemented with his own professional experience. Justin has a very keen eye for design and his attention to detail has saved us from mistakes or changes further down the line. The friendly team and contractors have always been polite, clean, on time, and helpful beyond requirements. We never felt worried about leaving the house and project in his very capable hands and he has always been transparent about the schedule and budget - there has never been a bad surprise. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Elphinston Wells for any building projects. – Testimonial from recent client in Surrey
