hedgerows
Our countryside & its wildlife is at risk. We encourage you to join the campaign to save our endangered hedgerows and share an exclusive extract from John Craven’s new book.
T
he hedgerows that criss-cross our countryside are not only an iconic sight, but a vital habitat and corridor for many of our native species. However, they are becoming increasingly fragmented which is threatening the wildlife that depends on them. We’ve lost about half our hedgerows since WWII. Although the rate of direct hedge removal has been reduced, hedgerows are being lost simply through how they are managed.
that depend on them, such as hedgehogs, bats, hazel dormice and song thrush.”
In Britain, habitat fragmentation is thought to be a limiting factor for the distribution of some species and a threat to others’ survival. Corridors play a vital role preserving a number of species deemed ‘at risk’. Some 16 out of the 19 birds included in the Farmland Bird Index, used by government to assess Many hedgerows the state of farmland wildlife, are are becoming associated with hedgerows.
“With 70% of UK land being agricultural, hedgerows offer the safest route for wildlife to travel across farmland,” says Megan Gimber, key habitats project officer at PTES. “Sadly, many hedgerows are becoming ‘gappy’, which fragments this amazing network. And, without more sensitive management, many hedgerows are at risk of being lost altogether. This is problematic, especially when we’re seeing a fall in numbers of the animals
“
‘gappy’
Healthy hedgerows reduce soil erosion, flooding damage and air and water pollution. They provide forage for pollinating insects, predators to keep crop pests in check and shelter for livestock, reducing deaths from exposure and improving milk yields. Hedges help us fight climate change by storing carbon and reduce the damage from flooding.

An extract from John Craven’s new book Headlines and Hedgerows is published by Michael Joseph
W
e have all heard that well-known piece of advice first coined by W.C. Fields: “Never work with animals or children.” Well, I’ve done both throughout my career (in fact, I couldn’t have succeeded without them!) so in my case at least that old adage is totally wrong.
I suppose one reason for my longevity is that I have never been very ambitious. I have not sought the headlines, never seriously courted celebrity nor been tempted to take chances on high-profile but potentially risky and short-lived programmes – apart from one, and that was Newsround, which was a six-week experiment in 1972. Thankfully it is still going strong so, as it turned out, it was not much of a gamble and a recent poll in Radio Times placed Newsround at number three in a list of the top 20 children’s programmes of all time. And Countryfile is often in the top 20 of mostwatched shows. During my 30 years there I’ve seen rural issues ranging from social isolation and deprivation to the way our food is produced climb higher and higher up the national agenda. That our audience is split pretty evenly between country dwellers and townies proves to me that, united as a nation in this at least, we want to preserve, protect and enjoy our glorious countryside... 10 | OCTOBER 2019
For my Countryfile interview with Prime Minister David Cameron, we met for an hour at Cogges Manor Farm, a rural heritage centre in his Oxfordshire constituency. The cameras were set up around the kitchen table and before he arrived a lady who seemed to be in charge of his “image” wanted to know where he’d sit. She checked the angles and saw a large Welsh dresser in the background. “Could we move some of those plates and ornaments,” she said. “It’s too fussy.” It proved that politicians have learned to be careful what’s behind them on screen. An exit sign, for instance, would be the last thing they wanted.
When Mr Cameron came in, dressed casually in a jumper – this, after all, was Countryfile – he said “I was brought up on you, John!” I don’t feel particularly old but it’s alarming when the man leading the country says you were part of his childhood! We had a wide-ranging conversation and he had no idea of the questions beforehand. I challenged him on his plan to make his administration the greenest government ever (which didn’t really happen) and overdevelopment threats to the landscape. “I care deeply about our countryside and environment,” he told me earnestly. “I’d no more put them at risk than I would my own family.” Today, I wonder what he’d make of the report by the Campaign to Protect Rural England revealing 15,500 new houses have been approved in areas of outstanding natural beauty in the years since. We also talked of his plans for a free vote in Parliament on bringing back hunting with hounds (which never happened) and persuading all other EU countries to enforce farm animal welfare laws as diligently as the UK (still waiting for that). I was impressed by his detailed knowledge of rural issues, even when pressed for details. A few months later at a Downing Street lunch for people involved in all aspects of the countryside, he smiled and said he hadn’t expected to be grilled by “a rural Jeremy Paxman.”

S TAR Q&A
Country smile Liz Nicholls asks broadcaster & dad John Craven OBE, 79, about his life & career ahead of his appearance at Guildford Literary Festival
Q.
We’re enjoying your memoirs. How’s it been looking back on your career? “It’s the first time I’ve written anything like this and took a bit of getting used to. All through my TV career I’ve had to keep my scripts short but the book gave me the chance to expand. There are chapters on everything from my childhood to Countryfile, taking in my time on Newsround and SwapShop – three TV ‘firsts’ and which I’m incredibly proud of. Some people would prefer to forget the shows that made them wellknown. Not me!” Q. What’s been your highlight? “There’ve been lots but one I recall in the book is when I knocked on a door and it was answered by a future saint... Mother Teresa. I went to the Mother House of her nuns in the Kolkata slums to make a film about her mission for both the dying and young orphans. She was wonderful.”
14 | OCTOBER 2019
Q. What one change would you make to benefit the countryside? “We need to stop young people leaving by building more affordable homes and amenities. Rural people have become isolated and we need to reverse that trend. More than a third of small farms have disappeared this century and many are struggling to survive. Unless we can attract more people to farming I worry for the future of our food production.” Q. Where’s your favourite part of the UK? “I was born and bred in Yorkshire and have lived in the North East, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire – all places with wonderful countryside. My favourite spot in Oxfordshire is Blenheim Palace with its spectacular grounds and walks. But my favourite part of rural Britain would have to be the Yorkshire Dales where I first came face-to-face with nature.” Q. Who would you most like to have worked with? “Thomas Telford is one of my heroes as he has had such an impact on our landscapes building canals, roads, bridges and viaducts.” Q. What are you reading now? “Airhead by Emily Maitlis. It’s a brilliant, often funny, behindthe-scenes account of her working life, written by one of Britain’s best television broadcasters. It proves she’s far from an airhead!” Q. What is your proudest moment? “Apart from becoming a father twice, receiving the OBE for services to children’s and rural broadcasting – the two areas that have defined my career.” John will talk about his memoir, Headlines & Hedgerows, at Guildford Book Festival on Tuesday, 8th October, 6.30-7.30pm, The Electric Theatre, Guildford. Book at www.guildfordbookfestival. co.uk or call 01483 444334.

Around the world... Peter Anderson chats to musician Lisa Stansfield, 53, ahead of her performance at Guildford’s G Live on Tuesday, 22nd October
T
hirty years of Affection are celebrated this month at Guildford, and few people could have forecast the love Lisa Stansfield’s first solo album people all around the world would still have for it. The result was a multi-platinum album that, on its release in 1989, went onto sell more than 5 million copies worldwide, winning three BRIT Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, a Silver Clef Award, an ASCAP Award and, overseas, a Billboard Music Award, a World Music I was lucky Award, and two Grammy nominations. to duet with Now Lisa brings her unique brand of soul, R&B and Brit-house to G-Live. Barry White
“
part of the challenge was that while working on the album we were on the Affection publicity tour.” Music and performing, it seems, were in Lisa’s genes. “Both Mum and Dad were musical but didn’t have the success I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy. My mum did sing with a skiffle group which she enjoyed, and I’m pleased to say she’s really enjoyed my success and I’m glad it gives her joy.” But it was a concert she went to as a teenager that made her mind up... “Yes, I was 15 and went to hear George Benson in Walsall. That concert really made an impression on me and probably cemented my desire to become a singer.”
When she was recording the album, was there any sense that it was something special? “Certainly, when we did All Around The World there was, and the nice thing about the song was that it appealed to ordinary people.”
Is there anyone she’d love to duet with? “Id love to sing a duet with Marvin Gaye, just the two of us in stools on a room on our own. I was lucky enough to duet with Barry White just like that and the hairs on the back of my neck tingled. I can imagine the same happening with Marvin.”
Did its success give Lisa a challenge when it came to writing and recording the next album? “I think, rather than a feeling of how we top it, when it came to the next album it was a case of being determined to put Affection to the back of our minds and come up with something new. Though

Guildford Shakespeare Company celebrates a first with a new production
he award-winning Guildford Shakespeare Company is preparing to stage one of the Bard’s rarely seen plays ahead of a first for the company when it transfers to London. All’s Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare’s most romantic and bittersweet plays. It tells of Helena who is in love with Bertram who in turn is committed to following his own path. Having cured the ailing
ruler of France, Helena is promised the hand of any man she wishes which prompts Bertram to enlist in the army. Undeterred, the love-struck Helena crosses half of Europe in pursuit of her happiness. GSC will stage the production in the Victorian Gothic style St Nicolas Church on the banks of the River Wey in the centre of town, which co-founder Matt Pinches believes is “perfect for this fairytale for grown-ups”. After the three-week run in Guildford, from Saturday, 12th October, to Saturday, 2nd November, it will transfer to Jermyn Street Theatre for the rest of November, making the production GSC’s first to transfer to London. Matt adds: “The opportunity to take our work to a wider audience, and at such a prestigious venue, is incredibly
exciting. To be able to spread not only the word of GSC, but also that inventive professional theatre is produced outside the capital is really important.” All’s Well That Ends Well is a joint production with Jermyn Street Theatre. Tickets are available from the GSC box office on 01483 304384 or at www.guildford-shakespearecompany.co.uk

the mind Meditating using mantras is one of the most popular methods of meditation.
I
t’s a wonderful way to anchor the mind. I’m a huge fan of the inspirational teacher and writer Deepak Chopra – and it was from his teachings that I learnt to meditate – by using mantras.
Chopra suggests that when you are meditating you are tuning into your mind rather than trying to escape it – and that meditation should be a way to get into the gap between the thoughts floating through your head. By focussing on and repeating a mantra silently you are able to achieve a state of inner calm and pure awareness – and thus enter a deep state of meditation. Mantra is a Sanskrit word – man is mind and tra is instrument. An instrument of the mind... I like tit! A popular mantra – and my favourite is So Hum (I Am). You can use this, just say “I Am” or your own words or positive affirmation such as “Stay Calm”, “Be Kind”. As always, it’s about what works for you! • Sit in a comfortable position with your hands in your lap or on your knees with the palms open and facing upwards. • Close your eyes and focus on your breath – inhaling and exhaling with ease. • Now introduce the mantra “So Hum” repeating it silently. • If you’re distracted by your thoughts or any noises, acknowledge them and gently bring your focus back. • Start by doing this for ten minutes and over a few days gradually increase the length of the meditation. • Release the mantra and focus on your breath - take a few moments to rest and then slowly open your eyes. Teal deal Radio 2 presenter and award-winning jazz vocalist Clare Teal brings her Jazz Trio to Guildford’s Electric Theatre on Saturday, 26th October
W
e are promised a rich jazz-infused repertoire interspersed with warm and witty storytelling as this new show brings you more exhilarating swing and sparkling melodies. Clare and her trio celebrate popular music from The Great American and British songbooks through to the contemporary writers creating the standards today.
“I would love to play the Royal Albert Hall on one of my tours,” she says, “rather than just guest or compere. It is such a marvellous venue – it is large, but also intimate. There can be up to 6,000 people in the audience, but you have the feeling you can reach out and touch each one of them.” What about who would be her dream duet? “I would love to sing with Elvis Presley and Ella Fitzgerald – but trust me I would be scared singing with them!”
For someone who spends part of her working life playing records, it is perhaps apt that records were Clare’s introduction to jazz, as she tells Peter Anderson. “I grew up in a workingLive class background in rural Yorkshire, and recordings bring to be honest there was not really any entertainment apart from listening to so much joy records. I found the collection in the attic. I think some of the jazz records were 78rpm they were my dad’s mothers.”
So how would the show repertoire differ from one of her radio shows? “Oh, they are completely different, with the concerts I select music that the line-up for that evening can perform superbly. For the radio programme I have more than 100 years of music to choose from. I want to try and appeal to as many people as possible with a varied playlist, but hopefully as well introduce music to some people which they may like but is a little out of their usual comfort zone.”
And, as she listened to those records, which of the singers inspired her? “Singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong. I especially love listening to live recordings – they bring so much joy. You feel you have a shared experience with the audience that was there at the time.” Speaking of audiences, Clare has taken her various backing groups to many locations – is there somewhere she would love to perform?
As one of the UK’s greatest interpreters of song and much-loved performers, Clare and her trio guarantee an evening of inspired music and unbridled entertainment performed by the very best. She is looking forward to the Electric Theatre – “I think it’s the first time I’ve performed here.”

What is hard water?
Before
After
If you live in a hard water area you will probably know about hard water problems; limescale covered surfaces, inefficient appliances, products that don’t lather well in water and skin that never feels smooth.
Y
ou might not even realise it’s hard water causing it. The magnesium and calcium minerals that make up the ground cause the water to be hard. This then runs through your pipes and appliances and the effects can be seen around your home. *Over 200ppm is considered hard
The 7 wonders of Harvey Water
Put your feet up and relax this Autumn. Enjoy limescale free surfaces around the home and more efficient appliances. With a water softener, you will spend less time cleaning, which equals more time doing the things you love - come rain or shine. With Harvey Water, you can reverse the effects of hard water. Products will last longer and lather better; giving you a more enjoyable and relaxing bath. You won’t use as many products throughout the home - saving money on bills in the long run. You and your family can also enjoy softer skin and glossier hair. Sound tempting? It’s all possible with the installation of a Harvey Water Softener.
to spew water everywhere. Since having the water softener installed, we haven’t replaced it in months. We were skeptical at first, but after having a demonstration we could feel the difference. We have noticed a difference, particularly using less shower gel and shampoo. Hair is softer and feels cleaner, you can definitely feel the difference. The entire process has been great!”
Try it for yourself
What our customers say:
Don’t just take our word for it! We have lots of happy customers who would recommend a Harvey Water Softener.
Softened water can make all the difference to your home and now you can try softened water for yourself, in your own home with a Harvey Water Softener. Enjoy softened water with our 3 month trial. Magic Mari Dress Up, Dandify and Drape yourself in glamour for a special night out, as Mari Wilson brings her energy-packed show to Guildford’s Electric Theatre on Friday, 1st November.
F
“
eaturing her fantastic eight-piece band The New Wilsations, including a terrific horn section, expect Mari’s 1980s hits and a selection of songs from the latest album Pop Deluxe, and of course, a few surprises. She first arrived on the scene in the early 1980s, and soon Mari had six hit singles, the biggest being Just What I’ve Always Wanted and Cry Me A River. I caught up with her to discover her musical journey.
I turned my back on pop and went into jazz
Singing was something Mari grew up with, and it seems even the advent of television did not get in the way: “We were a musical family,” she says. “I was the youngest of three children and we could harmonise together. There was a corner of the living room and before and after we got a television the three of us used to do a turn. Mine was nearly always Judy Garland.” Growing up in Neasden in north-west London, perhaps we should not be surprised about where Mari’s first concert was. “I think it was a club in Soho, and I saw Geno Washington and the Ram Jam band, and he is still as good touring today.” What about those who have inspired her? “Diana

Ross, Barry White, The Bee Gees, James Taylor, John Lennon, Blood, Sweat & Tears.” As well as inspiration, advice can also shape a career and that is certainly true in Mari’s case. As she says: “Don’t try to please everyone else with what you do, please yourself! That’s why, for a long time, I turned my back on pop and went into jazz. What’s important there is the performance, not the product.” Mari made regular appearances at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The South Bank and festivals alongside legends BB King and Ray Charles. It was also around this time that Mari first appeared in a musical. “Sweet Charity was a musical I had always wanted to do, and when she saw about a potential tour, my sister was straight on the phone to me – as I was to the producer! I the time I was performing in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. It was a completely new discipline to me, going from the freedom of jazz, to performing on stage – but it was something I wanted to learn.” Peter Anderson Hear Mari’s music from Show People to Pop Deluxe at Guildford’s Electric Theatre. irst the ragù: heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the onion and bay and sweat for about 3 minutes, until softened. Add the beef and seal well all over. Increase the heat, add wine and allow to evaporate. Stir in the purée mix, chopped tomatoes, basil, Parmesan and some salt & pepper, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for at least 2 hours, until the meat is cooked through and the sauce is thick. Check from time to time, stirring with a wooden spoon and, if necessary, add a little hot water. When cooked, set aside. Meanwhile, Win!... preheat oven to 180°C fan/200°C/400°F/gas mark 6.

Cook the sausage: either in the oven, in a roasting pan with a splash of olive oil and bake for 25 minutes, or fry for about 15 minutes in a pan with a splash of olive oil over a medium heat. When cooked through, remove, slice and set aside. In a large bowl, combine ricotta, eggs, half the Parmesan, and salt and pepper, until creamy.
Line the bottom of a baking dish (about 24 x 17 cm/9½ x 7 in) with some of the ragù, cover with a layer of lasagne sheets, then add a layer of ricotta, scatter over some sausage slices and pieces of mozzarella, then add another layer of ragù. 38 | OCTOBER 2019
For the ragù: • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • One onion, finely chopped • Two bay leaves • 750g/1lb 10oz beef brisket, cut into large chunks • 5 tbsp red wine • 1 tbsp tomato purée (paste) dissolved in a little warm water • Three x 400g/14oz cans of chopped plum tomatoes • A handful of basil leaves • 20g/¾oz/¼ cup grated Parmesan • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Prep: 30 minutes Cooking: Three hours (including cooking meat ragu) Serves: Six
Continue making layers until you have used up all the ingredients, ending with a layer of lasagne sheets, tomato ragù, mozzarella and the remaining grated Parmesan sprinkled on top.
Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for a further 20 minutes, until golden and bubbling.

PAINTING & DECORATING | BATHROOMS & KITCHENS We met Justin to entirely refurbish our 5-bedroom house including staircase, structural “work, flooring, bathrooms etc. He was from the start very reassuring and took time to listen to us about our project and our vision, which he supplemented with his own professional experience. Justin has a very keen eye for design and his attention to detail has saved us from mistakes or changes further down the line. The friendly team and contractors have always been polite, clean, on time, and helpful beyond requirements. We never felt worried about leaving the house and project in his very capable hands and he has always been transparent about the schedule and budget - there has never been a bad surprise. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Elphinston Wells for any building projects. – Testimonial from recent client in Surrey
